Book Description
Marc Quinn - famous for his sculpture Self, a life cast of the artist's head filled with nine pints of his own frozen blood - is a leading representative of the Young British Artists who have inspired reverence and revulsion worldwide. His first publication, Incarnate, is a comprehensive overview of the sculptural pieces which have established him as one of the most challenging artists of his generation. It contains over 200 full color illustrations of Quinn's work, including Self, Emotional Detox, The Blind Leading the Blind, and Frozen Frog Sculpture, alongside many that have never been seen before. Accompanying the images is a story by the novelist Will Self and essays by the art historian and critic Mark Gisbourne, and by David Thorp, curator of the South London Gallery, as well as a transcript of a conversation between Quinn and the musician Brian Eno. Incarnate is designed by Sean Perkins of North. "This is the publishing achievement of the year." - Elle Decoration

Shoes, Hats and Fashion Accessories.......2004-03-10
This book is great. It is just what I was looking for in doing some period research. The illustrations could only be better if they were in color. Anyone interested in fashion accessories of this period will not be disappointed.
Excellent reference.......2004-01-03
This book is exactly what it claims to be - a pictorial archive. For descriptions or details, Dover has a wide selection of books that will be of immense help with materials, construction, and history. For those who already have a working knowledge of the century in fashion, this book is a candy store of visual tidbits.
Just a note: very few fashion illustrations of the nineteenth century were colored; hand-coloring was a labor-intensive process reserved for high-end publications with limited runs. Check my Listmania list for some books with color illustrations.
What about descriptions?.......2000-09-19
This book has lovely pictures, although the author admits she has taken the liberty to decide which should be included for each year. It would be an even better book if the articles were named, better yet a small description, sometimes I wondered if a shoe were a man or woman's.
I think the book is good but stops short of being great but it is interesting and I would like to a sequel with the other drawings that were left out of this edition.
Shoes, Hats and Fashion Accessories.......2000-08-15
This review is from the viewpoint of a home sewer and crafter who adores vintage clothing, not a fashion historian, designer or illustrator.
Never having purchased any of the Pictorial Archives series before, I was surprised and initially disappointed by the black and white illustrations and the complete lack of text.
While it is fascinating to see how fashion accessories evolved over the decades there is no indication of whether an item was casual and day wear, or dressier for afternoon or evening. An index naming the style of each piece and/or notes explaining popular colors of the day would be helpful.
The black and white illustrations do render the detail of the accessories beautifully. With over 2,000 copyright free illustrations of wide variety of styles for men, women and children included I look forward to years of inspiration for fashion embellishment.

Another Great book ..........2007-03-30
Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.
Attention Parents.......2000-03-27
All of the For Better or For Worse books can help you find humor in tough situations. I'm not saying that you should use them as child rearing guides, but hey, loosen up a little.

THAT TAKES GREAT BAD WRITING.ERROL DID NOT HATE JEWS OR ANYONE EXCEPT PEOPLE WHO STOLE HIS MONEY AND TWO EXWIVES WHO BLED HIM DRY LIKE DAMITA AND PAT WHO STOLE MONEY AND THE HOME IN JAMAICA.ERROL WAS HAVING TOO MUCH FUN TO HATE. JUST LIKE HIGHAM SAID HE WAS A NAZI SPY AND HAD FBI FILES TO PROVE IT AND IF YOU READ THE FILE NOTHING IS THERE.THEN HE WAS BISEXUAL THAT WAS PROVEN WRONG BY PEOPLE WHO WERE THERE.THIS SIMP BRET HAD A NEW BOOK ON GABLE AND NOW HES GAY.PUBLISHERS SHOULD WATCH THIS LIBELILOUS WRITINGS.THERE IS A SANCTITIY FOR LEAVING DEAD PEOPLE ALONE. Errol Flynn: Satan's Angel.......2007-04-01
I am a devoted Errol Flynn fan - this book actually showed a side of him that other books hadn't.
Juicy featherweight afternoon read.......2007-01-22
Wow so may negative reviews, I understand the need of many fans to rise and protect the honour of Errol Flynn. But come on - Flynn was no angel...read his own biography "My Wicked Wicked Ways" and was known throughout Hollywood for his carousing and drinking and bisexuality. As with most major Hollywood player's this side of his character was kept tightly under wraps by the studios careful to guard the reputation of their biggest money spinners.
I have read numerous biographies which proclaim Flynn to be bisexual including the recent Brando Unzipped...so for me that was never an issue. What I do have a problem with is the author's featherweight writing style and failure to name sources particularly when it comes to so called conversations.
The nazi spy story I do not believe for one minute - its just 'way out there'... And a huge problem with the title "SATAN'S ANGEL"...makes one think that Errol Flynn was involved in the occult and all sorts of outlandish deeds. Hardly.
Its a juicy afternoon read that really shouldnt be taken too seriously...
Even though many of the stories presented here are not backed up by fact I couldnt help liking Flynn more after reading this and admiring his individual personality.
NOT WORTH ONE STAR-ENQUIRER GARBAGE!.......2006-05-15
This garbage is not worth one star, and not even worth reviewing.
As a relative of those who knew and worked for "Old Hollywood's"
Best, I know Errol was a Great Person. His daughter has a book
out in June of 2006, and his Grandson is working on a movie,
until those, you're better off just watching Errol's Films!
best book on flynn BY FAR.......2006-03-04
Most of this book is anything but 'lies, lies and more lies.' It is common knowledge in Hollywood, confirmed by scores of his contemporaries, that Flynn was a bisexual and quite a 'wild character'. Also an enthusiastic anti-semite. What do all these reviewers think he was, a choirboy? It is very funny to watch their outrage.

Symbolistic Stockhausen.......2002-09-29
No other author has ever examined Stockhausen's mysticism and myths, probably because in the past they have been deemed extramusical. This symbology can also be difficult to fathom if one doesn't know what to look for. This helpful guide shows how symbols penetrate the listener on many levels and sheds light on the creative world of this composer's 50 years of output.

Customer Reviews:
Good book with beneficial concepts.......2007-05-15
This book is pretty good. It has many relevant and useful concepts that are organized well and easy to remember (through the use of acronyms and "fun" concepts). The book is an easy, which is great for people on the go with very little time to spare for reading. The only reason for four stars is because the author seems to be sexist throughout the book (managers being referred in "he" terms, but women always seem to be at a lower level). This could just be my imagination, but I think it occurs throughout the book unintentionally.
A practical guide to excellence in communication.......2006-09-24
For most occasional speakers, help offered by a book used to be very limited. I have read a lot of communication books talking about smoke and spirits but, Granville N. Toogood offer us a comprehensive guide, plenty of examples, techniques and rules to apply. Do you think this book can improve communication in our business? My answer is clearly affirmative after reading the book.
Great Title, not much for the Executive though.......2006-03-25
Similar to most of the reviews of the book the strong points include helping a person form effective communication with others. It has a nice foundation for people who are new to public speaking, and a reminder for those who have been doing it for a while.
However, the book is just plain dated. There must be a new book from another author that we could steer people towards. The business and professional world has changed in the 11 years since the book was released. The pace of conversation, the use of technology to communicate, etc.
I must agree with another reviewer who noted that the book did little to address Executive status or sounding like a Leader, as the title infers.
Sorry, I know it takes a lot to create a book for others to read, but this particular one just does not deliver.
Granville is on point, correct and powerful........2006-03-24
We gave the book to all of our field management and had Granville come and share with them. A few comments from our people were; I wish i knew about this before, it will really help me get my point across quickly", another stated "I will order this book for the rest of my staff" and our President and CEO said Granville is on point, correct and powerful.
Good source material and some thought-provoking ideas, but dated.......2006-02-12
This book is exclusively about giving presentations and public speaking. I was mislead by the title, thinking it would be about communication in general for executives. The author lost a fair amount of his credibility with me at the beginning of chapter 2 when he listed his 4 exemplary executives, including John Scully who "built Apple into a world power that challenged IBM." Scully? Dude, check your facts. This book was written in '95 before the great divide of the high tech revolution, and there are plenty of dated ideas, including quaint advice on how to dress (Alan Flusser needn't worry about his job) and a lot of obviously pre-Powerpoint info about slides and overhead projectors. Could use an updated edition.
All-in-all, it's pretty good, but not great. It presents some thought-provoking ideas, especially about how to present with slides but keep the focus of the presentation on you, not the slides. However, there is a fair amount of trite junk to wade through to get to the valuable ideas. Good as source material if you pick and choose ideas, but definitely not the final authority on how to do presentations.

Good content - Reader has annoying voice.......2005-06-03
The content of the audio CD is excellent. The reader's voice is ear piercing and sounds like a computer generated voice. It was very hard to force myself to listen to the CD's because of his voice but once I did I was glad. Hopefully they'll come out with another version with a different reader.
