Book Description
What I'm proposing to myself and to other people, is what I often call the tourist attitudethat you act as though you've never been there before. So that you're not supposed to know anything about it. If you really get down to brass tacks, we have never been anywhere before. -John Cage, 1992
John Cage advocated paying attention to the world around us, and to the life that we are so excellently living. He is mainly known as a composer who affected the course of music in our time, but he also lectured, wrote commentary and poetry, and made prints, watercolors, and drawings. He died in 1992, but his work continues to affect people conscious of shaping their own lives. Cage worked at Crown Point Press, publisher of fine art prints, every year from 1978 until his death. During that period he produced 27 groups of prints, mostly etchings, totalling 667 individually composed works of art. Kathan Brown worked with Cage on these prints that make up the largest and most sustained aspect of his visual art. In this book, she speaks from her own experience about how he worked. The many illustrations make it easy to see what she is talking about, and she often uses Cage's own words to describe particular works or reflect upon the nature of his art.

GENERATION GAP .......2007-07-17
Miss Meghan's oeuvre opened my eyes to the real depth of the gap between mine and her generations. She discerns several different "shoe styles" where I can see, at best, a single footwear category, though I would not ascribe to all these sneakers and bowling, running or basketball shoes the attribute "style". On the other hand, where I recognize numerous styles, each available for view in my closet, Miss Meghan can't distinguish more than "high heels". Well, that much for the direction the taste in clothing takes in the young generation. Even more interesting is outlook on life, expressed primarily in the professions Miss Meghan selects for her readers. Positions in the media and marketing dominate the selection. There are few occurrences of the legal occupations, corporate ranks, non-profits, full-time mommies and housewives. There is even a waitress and a lab worker and perhaps a teacher and a fashion designer. What is missing: medical doctors, engineers of all kinds (chemical, electrical, mechanical), technology workers, trades women - not a single lady welder or lady carpenter, for example! - university professors, pilots, military women. Shortly, all the professions important in the life of each society are neglected, with all the marginal and decorative occupations as the recommended careers for the modern woman. Return to Victorian times, shoed in sneakers? After all, those Victorian shoe styles were not glamorous, and after factoring in the difference in manufacturing technology they were more like sneakers or hiking boots than high-heel sandals with ankle straps.
Disappointing stereotypes abound..........2007-05-07
Really disappointed to see the stereotypes this author connects to different styles of shoes. She was totally off the mark on several styles I wear, connecting them to personality traits that aren't even close to how I am. Judging by the other reviews I read, this book may just unfortunately reflect what "the masses" assume about certain people who wear certain styles. Sad to say that this book will likely cause wrong impressions and even discrimination against people who wear certain styles by those who read this book and buy into it. Could be a generational thing in that the author makes assumptions that date the book, reflecting a limited age range's view of others. Alarming thing is that readers may give more credence than they realistically should only because of the author's credentials.

Chibinate me Capin'.......2007-06-22
WARNING: This book is not for beginers. There are few step by step instructions, the rest you have to figure out on your own. (you lazy people)
For those who are not beginers, this book goes fairly deep into the world of Chibi characters. It shows basics in body structures and facial expressions.
It also touches bases on many catgirl body types.
I feel this book gives you a wide variety of ideas that you can use to create catgirls.
All and all this is one of Mr. Hart's better books. One of the facts is that he put less of his style into this book. Which causes it to become more manga, not americanized/manga that he usually draws.
Which is a good thing.
I really like the section in the back about stylized chibi's from Japan.
Manga Mania's Chibi and Furry Characters is really a must have for Manga Arists........2007-06-08
I myself personally have difficulty drawing chibi character's. This book is very thorough with the basic how to's of drawing chibis. IT even teaches you to think outside out the box when creating fantastical little monsters. I highly recommend this book.
Awesome and Helpful BOOK!!!!.......2007-03-19
OMG! This was the best how-to book i have ever READ!!!!! It is so thorough. I could draw everything, and it came out near perfection. My friends loved, I loved, and heck, my GRANDFATHER loved it! He thought it was really, really good, in terms of teaching you how to draw! I loved it, and recommend it to everyone! The book shows you step by step how to draw cat-girls (beautiful) and cute tropical girl/chibi/cat-girl and other adorable creatures. It teaches you when to use super-deformed characters, and uses cute drawings (eg, questionable little angel (my fave!) to enable you to use different, effective techniques! This is chock-full of great things!
Great for artists' of all age groups!.......2007-01-05
Chistopher Hart has truly out done himself with this book,as well as his other book fantasy worlds. In this book, Hart gives you examples of teaching you how to draw chibi characters as well as telling you what makes a chibi a chibi. A great thing about this book is that they have a large section of how to draw a variety of cat girls!!! That was my most favorite part! I really enjoyed this book alot, and as a bonus I will give you the run down of what to expect in the book....

WONDERFULl!!.......2005-12-20
I absolutely love this book. Whoever wrote that you can here Estelle's voice as you read it, you are REALLY correct. This book is extremely funny, and tells the truth. I wish she could have talked about her time in Torch Song Trilogy a little more though. However, my book is battered as well I have read this book SO many times!
I LOVE this book...........2005-09-26
I always tought that only the character Sophia was funny, but this book proves that Estelle is just as hilarious....
Golden.......2004-12-18
If you're an avid fan of the Golden Girls, and by that I mean, know when it airs on Lifetime and are able to recite dialogue from the show, then this book is for you. It captures the essence of Estelle Getty, and what we loved about her fiesty character, Sophia. It's an easy read of observations, anecdotes. I've read this many a time...my copy's all battered, but every now and then, when I'm feeling sentimental or a little blue, I pick up this book and find myself feeling a whole lot better. It's comfortable and familiar.
Classic Estelle!.......2003-11-20
While reading this book you could hear Estelle Gettys voice while she's cracking jokes throughout. Thoroughly entertaining!
Estelle Getty is so great........2003-01-30
This book was fantabulous. Anything Estelle Getty does is automatically a classic.

Like Sight and Sound itself, the essays in this book are international in scope and represent the newest perspectives in cultural theory and criticism in a readily accessible style. Challenging dominant myths and the status quo in the industry, these provocative writers consider a wide range of fascinating topics that define the boundaries of traditional cinema and explore unmapped territory.
Essays are generously illustrated with stills of films discussed, and each section contains a comprehensive bibliography and filmography.
Book Description
Music is the most popular and dynamic aspect of Caribbean expressive culture. As Caribbean music has evolved from its traditional roots to its contemporary forms, it has developed a rich variety of styles. From the well-known genressalsa, merengue, reggae, calypso, and bachatato more localized forms like chutney and kaseko, this wide-ranging book surveys Caribbean music's prodigious diversity and colorful history.
Enhanced with numerous illustrations and musical examples, Caribbean Currents is an up-to-date overview of the region's music, covering Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, Suriname, and smaller islands like Martinique and Guadeloupe. The authors provide an overview of Caribbean musicits forms and innovations, its musicians, its festivals and dance halls, and its fansand trace its primarily African and European roots. They explore the modern genres' relationship to issues of race, regional diversity, gender, and socio-political conflicts.
Given the international popularity of such Caribbean genres as reggae and salsa, this book is a critical resource for understanding musical styles that have become a dynamic part of world culture.
Customer Reviews:
"Cuban" currents: Cuban Music from Rumba to Reggae.......2004-12-19
Oh,... I am sorry, Caribbean Currents: Caribbean Music from Rumba to Reggae.
This book has some good information; especially when Manuel situates the music within a broader socio-cultural background. However, if you want to learn about Puerto Rican music, read cautiously (see Manuel's "everything is Cuban" stance). Much of his information on Puerto Rico's music is wrong.
The fact that scholars have not produced a large, comprehensive series of studies on a culture (PR), although, this of course, is now changing, does not mean an author should blatantly speculate about many aspects of that culture. Where/what are Manuel's sources?
All You Need to Know About Caribbean Music...Great Reading!.......2000-06-07
Probably one of the best introductory books written on the history, evolution and development of Caribbean music. Professor Manuel covers, with enough in-depth analysis, the "roots" and history of the music of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, Suriname and other small islands.
The book is well written and an easy read, as well as being informative, giving the reader an overview of Caribbean music. It is not all-inclusive of the "Caribbean Basin"...it does not include the music of Central America, Mexico and Venezuela. Nevertheless it is a book I highly recommend to anyone that is interested in obtaining an overview on Caribbean music from its beginnings to the different genres of today.
Excellent Caribbean Musical Journey.......1999-04-08
Enjoyed the scope and ambition of this book, which educates you well about the remarkable number of musical genres that have emerged from the Caribbean. Has a place on my "world music" shelf along with "World Music: The Rough Guide" and "The Brazilian Sound."

With a separate sudoku book for every level, all puzzle lovers can play this wildly popular, incredibly addictive game that's appearing in major newspapers all over! Taking a page from karate--another Japanese art--each title is graded by color: White Belt for easy, Green Belt for medium level, Brown Belt for hard, and Black Belt for the super-tough solvers. And because each book has an amazing 300 puzzles, the fun can go on for hours.

practice makes perfect.......2007-05-11
I did all the puzzles in the "Brown Belt" book, although I had to skip a few and "cheated" on a few more by looking at the answers. When the book was nearly finished I was hoping to get the "black belt" version for Christmas, but a friend gave me a second copy of this Brown Belt one. I was amazed to find that the first few I could do using the method I use to start each puzzle (starting with the nines, I look for a 9 in two cubes and try to figure out the missing one in the third cube) without doing my normal horizontal, then vertical, then cube by cube. I was surprised to find that the puzzles do get harder, even though they don't seem to. Now I'm wanting to move on to the Black Belt Black Belt Sudoku (Martial Arts Sudoku) book, but the reviews are pretty abysmal. Oh well, I'll give it a try anyway.... [bragging rights: I do mine in ink with no side notations :)]
Nice mid-level book.......2007-03-03
I actually received this entire series from my brother, who although he couldn't get into the Sudoku mode himself appreciated my passion for it.
I enjoy all levels of Sudoku, and tend to select the difficulty of the puzzle I do on the basis of how I'm feeling rather than on what I believe my ability to be. One of the benefits is that the easier puzzles provide one with a sense of accomplishment that can help neutralize a blue spell or a negative life experience. (I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the seretonin level of the brain is significantly effected by this process which may be what gives these puzzles their reputation for "addiction.") The mid-level and difficult puzzels, provide a sense of a challenge well met. In short they give one a bit of a buzz.
I have to say, however, that I actually found some of the Green Belt puzzles more complicated than some of those in this book. It seems almost as if the author generated a bunch of puzzles and divided them up between two volumes to which he gave different relative lables quite randomly. That said, I found them all very entertaining.
Hard? Hardly........2006-01-26
There's nothing objectively wrong with this collection of puzzles. I've completed fifteen of them so far, and it's been relatively enjoyable. The problem is the difficulty, or lack thereof. I have not had to make one single "pencil mark" in any of the puzzles. To be sure of the lack of challenge, I turned to the back of the book and completed the last ten, which confirmed that every puzzle in this collection can be completed without any notation or advanced techniques. Considering I bought this thinking it would be challenging, it has hardly lived up to its purpose. Still, it can be fun to pass a few minutes here and there with the book, so I wouldn't consider it worthless. If you consider yourself an advanced solver, however, skip this.
Good but not hard.......2005-11-14
This book of 300 Sudoku puzzles is a great buy, with hours of mental escapism; however, the puzzles are not all that hard. None of the puzzles require any of the specialized techniques that truly difficult (or diabolical) puzzles require. Instead, all can be solved by basic and careful cycling through. This makes the book, with its large number of puzzles, (1) a good one for any level of player to have around (for those times when you just want to dive into a quick puzzle or two) and (2) a great one for just-past-beginner players, but (3) not a good choice for serious players looking for the more difficult puzzles.
Good place to begin on hard sudoku's.......2005-10-31
I've never played Sudoku until a couple of days back when I picked up this book. I'd heard about the game and I just picked this up to test it out. With the result that I've been stuck with the book since I got it!
The game is fun, challenging and can keep you busy for hours, especially if you have a book like this that has hundreds of them. To be sure, the brown belt Sudoku is not easy; it says "hard" on the cover, so depending on your taste, you may want to start with the lower "belt" version in these series. If you think you can handle it or are familiar with the game, then go ahead and get this one.
Would have been nice if the book had more history or facts on the game. There could also have been more tips and strategies listed in the beginning to get you started. This book however gets down to the tacks: its a collection of puzzles and thats all. I still ended up liking it though; its a great passtime.
Customer Reviews:
Ridiculously difficult, and not in a good way........2007-05-05
Don't waste your time buying this book. It's nowhere near as good as the Brown Belt first version. You should be able to make a logical inference (based upon the numbers already in the squares) what numbers belong where, but that's not possible with this one. You have to basically play out different scenarios (such as "ok, if the two was here, how would they play out?").
If you want that in a Black Belt level, great. For Brown Belt, that's ridiculous. Don't waste your money. I told a friend this in advance of her getting the book, and now she wishes she had listened to me. Don't say I didn't warn you.
More challenging than the First Degree Black Belt book.......2006-07-07
This was the first sudoku book I bought after doing numerous puzzles from newspapers and online. This book lasted me a good 6 months, and was an excellent time killer on bus cummutes to work, during lunch breaks, during a hospital stay, while waiting for food in restaurant, and anywhere else the sudoku mood struck me.
The puzzles can not simply be solved by inspection. You must fill in all of the cells with number possibilities. Some of the puzzles can easily be solved by single candidate from there, while others require you to use candidate reduction strategies.
A good book to start with for anyone serious about getting into sudokus.

At a time when managers everywhere are seeking strong but sensible ways to reorient their companies for the coming millennium, a new edition of Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice, and Leadership, by Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal, reintroduces the bestselling authors' clear and insightful approach to "big picture" management. Updated examples add to those previously drawn from business, education, health care, and the public sector to help today's leaders prepare more creatively for tomorrow's needs.
Book Description
In this third edition of their best-selling classic, authors Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal explain the powerful tool of "reframing." The authors have distilled the organizational literature into a comprehensive approach for looking at situations from more than one angle. Their four frames view organizations as factories, families, jungles, and theaters or temples:
-
The Structural Frame: how to organize and structure groups and teams to get results
-
The Human Resource Frame: how to tailor organizations to satisfy human needs, improve human resource management, and build positive interpersonal and group dynamics
-
The Political Frame: how to cope with power and conflict, build coalitions, hone political skills, and deal with internal and external politics
-
The Symbolic Frame: how to shape a culture that gives purpose and meaning to work, stage organizational drama for internal and external audiences, and build team spirit through ritual, ceremony, and story

Covers All Bases.......2007-09-03
Often when a book focuses on two distinct audiences (in this case, managers and students - future leaders as the authors say) it fails to satisfy either. Not the case with this classic, as it does a good job of providing a large body of theory and it makes the reading interesting and useful for a practitioner. The four organizational viewing frames - Structural, Human Resources, Political, & Symbolic - help the process of making a textbook readable, but the straightforward writing style, story examples, and real-life illustrations keep it alive, and maybe even keep the student reader awake.
Constantly reminding the reader of the need to `reframe' - look at the situation from a different window frame or pane - may be a useful way to understand a particular problem, but (and there is one but, besides the +430 pages of reading) because the book covers everything from structure to ethics you may not find it as useful to solve the particular problem you identify. The book is recommended for anyone interested in learning about organizations and how and why they function or dysfunction, as the case may be. Dennis DeWilde, author of The Performance Connection
Fabulous book.......2007-08-12
This book provides a comprehensive concept for systemic analysis of comprehensive problems. I find it to be particularly valuable in looking at issues in the area of Public Administration. The examples are current and quite interesting. The material is interesting and captivating. It is an excellent stimulus for new thinking.
My favorite book on organizations of all kinds.......2007-02-18
I bought this book for a masters course in 1996. In ten years, this is the book I return to more than any other. Indeed, it is perhaps the only book out of all the books in the management coursework I return to again and again. I have bought it for friends going into their first jobs where they have to think about leadership and team-building, power and the drama of the workplace. It has value for me in that it goes beyond the content per se and invites and entrains my mind to stay flexible, because it asks the reader to see "reality" through multiple perspectives which are well-researched, critiqued and articulated in this book. Congratulations and thank you to the authors.
