Book Description
Denim: From Cowboys to Catwalks is a one-of-a-kind pictorial history of this illustrious fabric, featuring archival photos from pioneering brands; rare pictures of denim-clad icons; images of denim's role in subcultures from 1950s teens to LA hip hop; examples of rare, collectable garments; a guide to valuable vintage items, and more. The ultimate book on the ultimate symbol of American cool, now updated with new denim styles and redesigned in an affordable smaller format.
The story of denim is a tale rich in paradox. Cherished alike by cowboys and models, the fabric is at once a symbol of the counterculture and the raw material of a major industry. A simple fabric, dating back to 17th-century France, denim today is ubiquitous: Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood have pushed it into the forefront of high fashion; Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani have made it the basis for billion-dollar brands.
Denim: From Cowboys to Catwalk delves deep into the archives to trace the origins and development of this celebrated fabric. It features rare pictures of denim-clad icons, like Marilyn Monroe and Steve McQueen, plus specially commissioned photos of rare and classic garments from the 1880s to the present day. Complete with a glossary and a guide to valuable vintage items.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book, Love Denim.......2006-01-26
Anyone with an interest in denim will find this wonderful book to be a very easy and enlightening read. The pictures are all bright, clear, and of high quality. There are several great images of musicians and celebrities wearing denim (Elvis, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis) as well as close-up shots of vintage jeans (The first known pair of Levis!). Not only are the pictures great, but the book is written in a manner which is easy to digest. The subject ranges from the history of denim to current trends. It also contains a glossary of terms for quick lookup so if you need to be reminded what selvage or sanfordized is, it's there for you.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in fashion and denim, or simply anyone who wears a pair jeans.

Customer Reviews:
If you want to learn how to draw line art..........2006-11-08
First up I don't own book #1 so I can't comment on how much of the information in this book is rehashed.
This book is great if you want to learn to basics of drawing line art. It covers a lot of the theory behind creating great characters, such as using construction lines to ensure your characters anatomy is right. As for the price tag, well, I paid several thousand dollars in course fees to learn these techniques so I don't think it's expensive AT ALL.
If you want to learn how to draw comic line art then I think you will like this book!
Good book overall...though still some problems.......2006-04-04
The books is nicve in it's construction of how certain artists put together their characters and how they draw in general and what most people fail to understand is that this isn't a recipe book for all the artist's methods of drawing, it's not a step by step "how to" book. It give a budding artist ideas on how to improve their own drawings. And for the idiot who reviewd that this book sucks for DC fans and hates the fact that they didn't include any DC characters, it's because the fact that WIZARD (who publishes the book) was in a lawsuit with DC back in the nineties and has decided to steer clear from anymore copyright infringement, like what they were accused of in the lawsuit. So, no there won't be any DC characters. Plus the fact that Wizard is part owned by Marvel Comics, also makes that a difficult situation. So, to the reviewer who want smore DC, go pick up DC's Guide to Pencilling/Inking instead. And you won't see wizard publishing any of the illustrated articled pre lawsuit, because they don't want to get sued...again.
The main flaw that I saw with the book was that the articles are basically the same as what you got in all your past copies of of your WIZARD subscription. There's little more to flesh out the existing articles than what was actually in the magazine, so don't expect anything more in depth than a bout 3 pages per subject, sometimes it's enough but not often.
Overall the book ain't bad, just as long as you get the other 3.
Just so-so.......2006-01-21
I don't own the first book of the Wizard How to Draw series so my review is unrelated to it.
Since this book is a compilation of articles written/illustrated by different comic book
artists, it doesn't cover topics in depth. So my advice to future buyers is to not expect
a stepwise tutorial about "comic book anatomy." This book's primary audience are people
who already know how to draw correct human anatomy and would want to know how to
"exaggerate" it to "superhero/superheroine" proportions.
Now, I must admit that I didn't like a few of the articles. However, there are some that
are noteworthy in my opinion and they're the following:
* Blocks & Cubes - Ty Templeton
- Although I wouldn't want to suggest that you actually start drawing the human
body using spheres, ovoids, cubes, and cylinders, they're useful in imagining
human movement. Ty also corrected my misconception that the elbows and knees
are ball-and-socket joints. They're hinge joints. Our shoulders do the rotating.
* Dynamic Perspective - Brent Anderson
- He talks about curvilinear perspective. We normally don't see the world this way
because planes don't have windows under our feet but a flying superhero would. I don't
live in a big city like New York but I think New Yorkers who find time to look up would
also see this kind of view.
* Structure; Head & Torso; and Facial Expression - Kevin Maguire
* Eyes; Noses; Mouths - Brian Bolland (Batman: The Killing Joke)
* Hair - Steve McNiven
- I always have a hard time with hair because I'm trying to learn how to draw it from
different sources - realistic or like a cartoon - instead of learning how to draw "comic
book" style hair. I now know that drawing "comic book" hair doesn't have to consider
individual hair strands but rather masses of them.
* Feet - Darick Robertson
* Woman - Joseph Michael Linsner
* Sultry Women - Adam Hughes
* Sex Appeal - Michael Turner
* Proportions - Dale Keown
Ultimately, in addition to excellent artistic anatomy and general step-by-step drawing books,
drawing from real life or near it would prepare you to become a comic book artist of some fame
instead of a second-rate, substitute for one.
I think I would be investing in a digital camera so that I can take pictures of hands, feet and
poses of friends and relatives :)
I'm giving this book 3 stars. I would have given it 4 but $ 19.95 is too pricey for this thin
book. I think $ 9.95 or even $ 8.95 should be the right price for it.
If Wizard is reading this then may I suggest you guys actually hire the best comic book
line-artists (as opposed to comic book painters like Alex Ross, Jon J. Muth, etc.) known for
certain aspects of their work to write their biographies (When did they started drawing? How
did they enter the comic book industry? What's their typical day like? What inspires them?
Who did/do they look up to within and without the comic book industry?). I think this would
make a better book(s), wouldn't you say?
Wizard How to Draw: Vol 2, not could be Vol 1 and 1/3.......2005-12-24
Is This the Book 2??
Is this a joke from the Joker???
Oh please give me a break. . It looks like 1 and 1/3 Volume. My first impression was "I want my money back!!!". This book essentially is a reprise from the first edition. Here we have the same problem with DC's characters, They are still out... It's a fail, we will not read again "how to draw batman", "Superman", "how to draw supporting characters" or any trainings with DC Characters.. It's bad for us the DC's fans. !!
Anatomy here, oh please you can find this info in the first volume. Hey there are no signal about "Krash Course" authored by Greg Capullo "Vicious Anatomy".
Hey Wizard: Bring Back Greg Capullo's KRASH COURSE!!!
Not at all is bad here. There are several articles authored by Brian Bolland, Eyes, Noses and Mouths. Brian Bolland is the Pinnacle here.
Too much information re-hashed from the first book. .......2005-12-21
This is book #2 in what I think is going to be a series of 5 books. (it could be more than 5) As a Heroic anatomy book - as it's titled - it's pretty poor. The fist book was an intro to drawing book which wasn't all that bad, gave great tips, and was a good get you going down the right path book. But these books are labeled #1 - #2 (so far) which dictates step by step drawing course, or learning pattern. NO WAY - DO NOT GET THAT IMPRESSION. In this second book being that these are articles from wizard magazine, and collected by different artists tips on drawing anatomy, but this one is all over the place. It's all about the same thing: Anatomy. Only it's not a consistent anatomy book. All these artists draw a little differently, and it's not any real direct path, or teachings on how to draw anatomy. Not only that. The good articles are reprinted from the first book in the series (Exactly the same articles) The Turner article, and Hughes articles are in here again. This book is also thinner, and just isn't much of an anatomy drawing book. If you want to draw (heroic, and feminine) anatomy for comics book I would suggest books by Hogarth, and some good reference material. Knowledge of anatomy is a must. As sick as it sounds you can find it in medical autopsy books. The musculature must connect to the bone correctly in the right places. There are many comic book "drawers" that just don't get that.

Classic Judith Viorst humor writing.......2002-04-30
Fine poetry this is not, but Judith Viorst hits another home run by applying her piercing sense of humor to the sundry atrocities involved in turning forty: having your children grow up, wondering about your husband, feeling left out, misunderstood, underappreciated, uncomfortable dinner parties, seeing the marriages of your friends break up, and so on.
This all sounds like very much a downer, but Viorst manages the neat trick of turning it into funny stuff, as in "The Truth":
"The truth is
If I had it all to do over
I still wouldn't study Swahili,
Learn to fly a plane,
Or take 92 lovers,
Some of them simultaneously . . .
The truth is
That I'll always want to be
Pure enough to hate white bread,
Deep enough to admire Patagonian folk art,
Thin enough to go swimming in the nude,
Mature enough to outgrow Erich Fromm,
Nice enough to be nice to my Uncle Bernie,
And secure enough to not need getting married."
Viorst raises issues that come up as you get older, and takes her readers with her by acknowledging the down side while seeing the humor it all brings as well. This is a terrific gift for a "newly forty" pal or for any married mom with kids.
A waste of money.......2001-10-19
I bought it for my sister's 40th birthday. Luckily, I read it when it arrived instead of wrapping it and giving it to her.
She won't be receiving it, but the trash will be. The book isn't even remotely humorous and many of the poems, which
I felt were badly written, left me scratching my head.
Great little book!.......2001-03-05
Judith Viorst is my favorite author! I loved discovering her books on age. She hits the mark more times than not on the feelings that we have at a given age! I find that I reread her books often when I need a lift or a laugh! Makes a wonderful gift for a good friend.
Knowing How it Feels.......2000-10-19
For a decade that begins with being "Over the Hill," there is a negative connotation comes with being forty. It implies that 40 means "old". You may often be asking yourself, "Where did the time go?" Instead of looking ahead, as for the previous years, you may find your self searching back. Lonely and Confused you may wonder, "Does anyone know how it feels?" By reading Viorst's Book, I was motivated to look ahead instead of searching for the past. She made it feel as though there is still a hike to hump of the hill. Entusiastic about being forty instead of being depressed about middle-age, she explains how to cope with the every-day experiences of being forty. To best put it she makes you feel OKAY about middle-age!
Book Description
In Claiming the Real, Brian Winston rewrites the history of documentary film to take account of technological change. He subjects the great figures of the past--Grierson, Flaherty, Dziga-Vertov--to a searching critique, and examines both the principles and practice of the major movements in documentary such as cinema verité. He offers a revised definition of the essential difference between fiction and documentary, and identifies the ethical base of any film practice that attempts to capture "truth."
Customer Reviews:
A Clear and Wide Ranging intro to documentary.......2005-06-16
This is a clearly written, historically grounded and wide ranging introduction to documentary. The field of academic study of documentary is not well established and there are only a few notable books in the field - this is one of them! Winston attempts to categorise differnt forms of documentary from the Griersonian to "fly-on-the-wall". His categorisations are by no means universally valid, but they do enable the reader to better comprehend the claims of documentaries. In his final chapters Winston makes his own claim on how documentarians should position themselves. Whilst parts of the book do seem a little messey, this is more to do with the messy state of documentary than with Winston's writing.
Highly recommended.
Marred by incredibly sloppy research.......1998-05-02
I was shocked to find that this book, bearing the imprimatur of the BFI, was so poorly researched and so sloppily assembled. One example -- a film that merits an entire chapter is not even mentioned in the index! Winston has done some good work in the past, and has some interesting ideas, but should be ashamed of having this mess released with his name on it.

What a treasure to own!.......2007-01-10
Along with Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home sourcebook, this Atlas is a gem of a book and I say that as someone who doesn't play the RPG, though I wish I could. This is a review from a Dragonlance novel reader. This Atlas is not only helpful but advances and thickens the story to such an enormous degree.
All the popular cities and places are here in scaled drawings as well as oodles of information written about them.
If you pick this one up, look forward to seeing and reading about:
- Inn of the Last Home
- Towers of High Sorcery (loads of information and drawings)
- Tika's house
- Thorbardin
- Ice Wall
- Silvanost
- Istar
- Mount Nevermind
- Sanction
- Neraka
- The Abyss
- Dragon Mountain
- Foghaven Vale
- Solace
- Pax Tharkas
- Tarsis
And many more...plus read information and view maps of Pre & Post Cataclysm
This is a wonderful treasure to own.
Confusing cut-aways.......2000-07-04
Sorry for the low rating, but I had great difficulty getting through the atlas in several decisive places. Whatever attention to detail there is, the maps are simply too confusing and muddled: there are often several cut-away views in one map, the scale is hard to determine, it is hard to differentiate between various layers of depth, and the choice of perspectives is questionable. Instead of the black/grey/sepia tones of the Atlas of Middle Earth (by the same author), now we have large quantities of out-of-place green all over the pages. To repeat myself, the attention to detail is nice, but several of the sources are so outlandish that it is hard to determine where exactly on the map concrete facts end and Caren Wynn Fonstad's imagination begins. Exact lines are not quoted where they might be expected; rather, we are provided with page and line numbers. Lastly, unlike the above-mentioned Atlas of Middle Earth, Atlas of Dragonlance DOES NOT follow the plots of the books, but uses a region-by-region scheme, making actually following the maps as you are reading into a frustrating chore.
Atlas of the DragonLance World (Dragonlance Books).......2000-02-23
I'm writing unofficial Home Page by Russi
Love it.......1999-06-18
This is a great book for any Dragonlance enthusiast. By some odd reason, I found two of them in the same used bookstore (after hunting everywhere for it for 3 years.) Well, so now I'm the lucky owner of two Atlas's which i don't mind, but still, why do I need two? But anyway, when reading the chronicles and the legends, this is one helpful book to have on hand (while reading the chronicles and legends alone is amazing, its even better when you can follow them along where ever they go) The attention to detail is astounding, and you can figure out the layout of everything in the saga. The only downside is, they don't have kendermore. Pity. That is one town I would love to see. :)
Awesome detail of Krynn.......1999-02-04
when i first saw this book, i was amazed at the exquisite detail that Fonstad put into the drawings. Maps, Cross-sections, Astral Skyscapes are all drawn to such detail that you can see individual desks and more. Points of interest are noted (such as "Kitiara died here" in Raistlin's lab) and each map has quotes from the series that show where the detail come from. I was really impressed by the detail on the tomb of huma and the cross-section of dragon mountain, as well as the only known map of the Abyss itself... Only gripe about it is because it's so old (out of print in 1992) it only has stuff up to the end of the tales II trilogy. A good book, but almost impossible to find anywhere. A must for any dragonlance novel or RPG fan.

Sharing the secrets and strategies investors use to profit from low- and no-money-down deals, Patton gives investors all the information they need to succeed.
"Finally, a book that explains lease option and subject-to deals in depth and detail. This book is essential for anyone who wants to make money in real estate without using a lot of cash or taking on a lot of risk. A gold mine of great information."

Customer Reviews:
Great Book! Great Author!.......2007-09-14
This book is very well written. Excellent. Three months after reading her "Lease Option/Subject To" book I was able to do a lease option deal with a motivated seller. Now that I am ready to exercise my option, I was having problems finding a mortgage broker that can refinance a lease option deal. I emailed Wendy Patton and she responded in less than 24 hours with 5 mortgage brokers that can do the refinance. Bottom line, this is a Great Book! and a Great Author!
The best from the East works even in the West!!!.......2007-08-30
As Real Estate Investors, when we hear of different ways to make money in this business, usually the first question always is "Will this work for me?" or "Will this work in my area?" or even better, will it work now "in this type of market?" Well, I say that Wendy has techniques that will answer YES to all three questions. My eyes really lit up when I learned how to combine methods--such as buying "Subject-To (getting the deed) and then Lease Optioning!!! Boy talk about a million dollar idea!! And these methods work -NO MATTER WHAT YOUR MARKET IS DOING!!! It was once said by a very popular and wealthy individual that we should "Own nothing and CONTROL everything"--well you got it right here!!! CONTROL WITHOUT OWNERSHIP!!! And you can get wealthy doing it. How would you like to own (control) over 100 homes at one time and have THREE sources of income from EACH house!!!! How many checks can you handle? That is what this book will do for you!!! GO GET IT NOW!!! RIGHT NOW!!!
GO Slowly and Know What You are Doing.......2007-07-26
As a Realtor, I get a little nervous when my investor clients come to me and want to try things they read about or saw on the web or on tv. Most of those things are illegal in the state I practice in.
However, this is a good primer for beginners in Lease Options and Subject-to deals, both Realtors and investors can profit from this read.
I do have clients who use variations of these strategies, but it is very important that you fully understand how these work and what can happen if they don't work. This book is a good addition to every investor and Realtor's reference library.
A word of caution: Before you attempt any of these proceedures discuss it with a very knowledgable real estate attorney, preferrably one who is also a real estate investor.
Great info........2007-07-05
I have a hard time believing that it is quite as easy as this book makes it sound but some very interesting and useful info.
Her book is simply an advertisement .......2007-06-28
How to Invest in Real Estate using Lease Options and Subject To's is nothing but an advertisement for her more expensive $700 course which includes all the scripts, contracts, forms, CD's, DVD's, powerpoint presentations to Realtors and so forth. I am really disappointed that she refuses to allow you to download these scripts, contracts and forms she mentions in her book for free off her website. Her book is worthless until you are willing to shell out $700 for her course. I love the content of the book but if you are a broke unemployed salesman you will continue to stay broke because it always takes money to make money. There is no such thing as free anymore. No such thing as compassion for those trying to get a brake here.
