    Book Description

Lois Orswell (1904-1998) was a pioneering collector of abstract expressionist art and modern sculpture. She was notable not only for the quality of her acquisitions but also for her exceptional position as a woman collector at a time when men dominated the art world. Orswell focused her attention on sculpture and drawings, rather than paintings, and her collection features the work of such canonical artists as Kline, de Kooning, Rodin, Calder, Moore, Nevelson, and many others. Of all these artists, none was more important than David Smith -- arguably the greatest American sculptor of the twentieth century -- and the book highlights the close connection between collector and artist.

This handsome volume publishes for the first time the correspondence between Orswell and Smith, which sheds important new light on the sculptor's personality and professional practice. The book also tells the history of the Orswell Collection, which numbers over 340 objects and is housed at the Harvard University Art Museums.

This book is published to coincide with an exhibition at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, from September 21, 2002 to February 16, 2003.

        Book Description

Description: "Michael Roberts is the Jean Cocteau of the fashion world," wrote the celebrated New Yorker editor Tina Brown in 1997, welcoming her new fashion editor to the most prestigious magazine in the world. Having already served for many years as a style editor (The London Sunday Times, Vanity Fair) and having produced numerous illustrations, photographs, paintings, and columns of fashion criticism for various media, Roberts had already had his name coupled with Cocteau's, but his striking visual style is collected here for the first time. From evocative pen-and-ink sketches to acrylic paintings to intensely witty New Yorker covers created from cut paper, these works capture the fads, foibles, and fashionability of our times. Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, in her introduction to "this beautiful book" calls them "fiendishly accurate satire." And the shoe guru Manolo Blahnik writes, "His drawings grasp fashion moments like a photo could never do." That a major part of the book was created through the painstaking method of paper collage especially appeals to the internationally famed fashion designer John Galliano. He writes, "I have avidly collected his work, along with doing my own collages, for years, and I am honored to be a part of this book." --Grace Coddington

        A Modern Master

I had no idea who Michael Roberts was when I came across this book, which idly adorned a naked shelf in the now historic Coliseum Bookstore. As I flipped through the book again and again and again I was awestruck by the sheer number of spectacular plates in one volume. I'd frame them all but wouldn't dare dissect this clothbound collector's dream. Mr. Roberts' artistic prowess is an inspiration--his bold colors, defined shapes that are chiseled as well as a body-builder's pecks, and imagery so striking it burns a place in your memory. Note the Pompeian mosaics--just mind-blowing.

I was so moved by his artistry that I purchased 2 of his earlier works, The Jungle ABC and Mumbo Jumbo, The Creepy ABC. How wonderful to discover the talent, wit and verse contained in these treasures for new readers--what a fun way to learn!

Thank you Michael Roberts for these treasures, I anxiously await your future masterpieces.

        5 out of 5 stars Stunning!!.......2007-01-09

A beautiful book beautifully produced, laid out and printed. If you are looking at this review you know who Michael is and what you're buying, so all I can say is that you won't be disapointed, just hit your "buy now with one click!" button.

        Book Description

Manolo Blahník's shoes inspire fanatical devotion. "Manolo Blahník's shoes are as good as sex," Madonna has said. "And they last longer." Diane Von Furstenberg has more than eighty pairs; Paloma Picasso has been a fan since she was fourteen; Bianca Jagger and Kate Moss, to name just a few, are fellow addicts. For three decades, Blahník's sense of the theatrical wedded to the finest materials and superlative craftsmanship have held the fashion world spellbound, and his creations have graced the catwalks of great designers from Yves Saint-Laurent to Isaac Mizrahi to John Galliano.

Here, collected together for the first time, are over one hundred exquisite drawings that Blahník makes at the outset of the design process. These sketches are executed with such exuberance and deftness that they have become as sought after as the shoes themselves (they often fetch up to $15,000.00 at charity auctions). Inimitable in style, the drawings, beautifully reproduced in this book with special inks, vividly convey Blahník's unique vision. Whether it's a Grecian sandal designed for Galliano, with a snake-like strap slithering up the calf, or an emerald- and bead-fringed satin mule, the seductive attention to detail in the drawings conjures up the shoe itself.

Illuminating introductions by Anna Wintour and Michael Roberts explore why Manolo Blahník's shoes inspire such passion, and these are complemented throughout the book by the words of admirers including Suzie Menkes, Donatella Versace, and David Hockney. Michael Roberts also contributes a photographic essay showing Blahník at work in his studio, making sketches, preparing the wooden lasts, and supervising the production of his shoes at his factories in Italy. A final "scrapbook" section includes Manolo Blahník's own photographs of family, friends, and inspirational places. 150 illustrations, 120 in color.

        5 out of 5 stars love it.......2005-11-16

I was so inspired by this book, I'm a shoe designer so I totally love this book. The sketches, the colors, it's just awsome! definitely worth buying!!!!!

        4 out of 5 stars good book.......2004-11-11

The drawings in this book are amazing. I think the book would be better with photographs of the finished shoe next to each drawing. Also, the about Manolo section is too small, it could have given a longer biography.

4 out of 5 stars Great Designer, Great Layout, Great Book.......2003-12-22

Maybe I am biased because I personally love the designer, however I think this book was a great idea and very charitable of Mr. Blahnik. He gives us a look into the process which he has artfully perfected

        5 out of 5 stars shoe fetish.......2003-10-14

For anyone with a shoe fetish or a passion for fashion this book is worth it. Splashy colors, great text. I read half of Wintour's foreward and bought the book without flipping through the rest. BUY BUY BUY!!!!

          Book Description

For the past twenty-five years Americans have relied on Pulitzer Prize-winning wordsmith William Safire for their weekly dose of linguistic illumination in The New York Times Magazine's column "On Language" -- one of the most popular features of the magazine and a Sunday-morning staple for innumerable fans. He is the most widely read writer on the English language today.

Safire is the guru of contemporary vocabulary, speech, language, usage and writing. Dedicated and disputatious readers itch to pick up each column and respond to the week's linguistic wisdom with a gotcha letter to the Times. The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time marks the publication of Safire's sixteenth book on language. This collection is a classic to be read, re-read, enjoyed and fought over. Fans, critics and fellow linguists wait with bated (from the French abattre "to beat down") breath for each new anthology -- and, like its predecessors, this one is bound to satisfy and delight.

Safire finds fodder for his columns in politics and current events, as well as in science, technology, entertainment and daily life. The self-proclaimed card-carrying language maven and pop grammarian is not above tackling his own linguistic blunders as he detects language trends and tracks words, phrases and clichés to their source. Scholarly, entertaining and thoughtful, Safire's critical observations about language and slanguage are at once provocative and enlightening.

Safire is America's go-to guy when it comes to language, and he has included sharp and passionately opinionated letters from readers across the English-speaking world who have been unable to resist picking up a pen to put the maven himself in his place or to offer alternate interpretations, additional examples, amusing anecdotes or just props.

The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time is a fascinating, learned and piquant look at the oddities and foibles that find their way into the English language. Exposing linguistic hooey and rigamarole and filled with Safire's trademark wisdom, this book has a place on the desk or bedside table of all who share his profound love of the English language -- as well as his penchant for asking "What does that mean?" Or, "Wassat?"

This new collection is sure to delight readers, writers and word lovers everywhere and spark the interest of anyone who has ever wondered, "Where did the phrase 'brazen hussy' come from?"

This is a great 'teach it to your child yourself' book even if you're not a pianist. As a piano teacher, I recommend it to parents/aunts/uncles/grandparents who want to expose a young child to playing the piano or keyboard. The story of Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear makes the lessons even more interesting - keeps the student's attention longer.

I like it so much that I like to play it again. My favourite song in this book is 'Haydn's Symphony'.
I like it so much it's my music book ofcourse. I like all the animals best because they learn me music so much. I can't even kiss them because they are in my music book. Mummy might get me the animals for christmas!

The workbook is a must when teaching from the lesson book. The workbook follows the lesson book Music for Little Mozarts: A Piano Course to Bring Out the Music in Every Young Child (Music for Little Mozarts)and includes coloring and and exercises to reinforce what your child learned in the lesson book.

I gave it 4 stars because once you use it, you can't reuse it for another student.

                            Book Description

Published to complement Mozart Studies (published in 1991), Mozart Studies 2 offers a forum for the most important trends in recent Mozart scholarship, including substantial contributions in gender and genre studies, close readings of individual works (among them the `Prague' symphony and Le nozze di Figaro), textual and contextual research and new directions in analysis, both for the operas and instrumental music. At the same time, it also aims to suggest directions for future research. In addition to Cliff Eisen, the contributors include leading Mozart scholars, among them Mary Hunter, John Platoff, Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, and Elaine Sisman.

What is Quiz Book 4? contains material written by the show's writers and used during prior seasons of the show itself!

I suggest that you purchase this book and study for the show if you are interested in trying out. Study the frequent categories that are featured in the book, such as "Crossword Clues" and "Before & After".

2 out of 5 stars Not worthwhile for preparing for Jeopardy Audition.......2002-07-22

I agree with David Martin who said that this book was not useful for a Jeopardy audition. I auditioned at the same time as Mr. Martin and I found more useful a book called Cultural Literacy Guide, even with its minor factual errors (the reviews of that book will point out the errors) In addition I would recommend watching Entertainment tonight or reading USA today for a while to catch up on your popculture info.

2 out of 5 stars Are you about to audition as a Jeopardy ! contestant?.......2002-03-20

Are you thinking about buying this book because you are about to take the test to become a contestant on Jeopardy? If so, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! I just took the test, and I can tell you that the test has NOTHING to do with the kind of questions this book contains. All of the questions you'll be expected to know are taken from Final Jeopardy on those evenings when none of the three contestants have a clue as to what the correct answer is. If you are auditioning for the show, it's probably because you can routinetly answer 85-90% of the Jeopardy and Double Jeopardy questions, and you can answer them faster than Alex can read the question. Well, that's great, but the test does not contain any of those questions. The test is nothing but the very toughest Final Jeopardy questions on the most arcane and esoteric questions. This book contains none of those kind of questions, only the easy trivia that you already know anyway. If you want to pump up you ego with a bathroom book that makes you feel smart, then by all means buy this book. But if you want to prepare for the Jeopardy audition by studying the kind of obscure minutuate that might show up on the test, then you are better off buying an opera CD.

How is the human brain like the AIDS epidemic? Ask physicist Albert-László Barabási and he'll explain them both in terms of networks of individual nodes connected via complex but understandable relationships. Linked: The New Science of Networks is his bright, accessible guide to the fundamentals underlying neurology, epidemiology, Internet traffic, and many other fields united by complexity.

Barabási's gift for concrete, nonmathematical explanations and penchant for eccentric humor would make the book thoroughly enjoyable even if the content weren't engaging. But the results of Barabási's research into the behavior of networks are deeply compelling. Not all networks are created equal, he says, and he shows how even fairly robust systems like the Internet could be crippled by taking out a few super-connected nodes, or hubs. His mathematical descriptions of this behavior are helping doctors, programmers, and security professionals design systems better suited to their needs. Linked presents the next step in complexity theory--from understanding chaos to practical applications. --Rob Lightner

                            Book Description

A cocktail party. A terrorist cell. Ancient bacteria. An international conglomerate.

All are networks, and all are a part of a surprising scientific revolution. Albert-L&aacuteszló Barab&aacutesi, the nation's foremost expert in the new science of networks, takes us on an intellectual adventure to prove that social networks, corporations, and living organisms are more similar than previously thought. Grasping a full understanding of network science will someday allow us to design blue-chip businesses, stop the outbreak of deadly diseases, and influence the exchange of ideas and information. Just as James Gleick brought the discovery of chaos theory to the general public, Linked tells the story of the true science of the future.

For some reasons both this one and 'The Tipping point' didn't really appeal to me. As an example in this book there is this attempt to superimpose the 'Bose Einstein condensation' to network properties. I personally didn't see any beef there

This book, in particular, discusses the application of network theory in the context of its historical significance. The author explores how it can be used as a tool and device to understand cities, computer networks social networks, human-human interactions (speech), human-computer interactions (HCI), computer-computer interactions (protocol), diseases, computer viruses, nature. Based on this book and its related siblings, it inspires tremendous amounts of ideas for the next big thing in marketing strategy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb popular science: the laws of networks........2007-04-14

Networks all have a meaningful similarity. Whether the network at hand is a party, a cell's molecular reaction, or the puzzling old bridges of Königsberg, Prussia, you could describe each one by using a branch of mathematics called "graph theory," invented by Leonhard Euler in 1736. His long-dormant concept bloomed in the 1990s with the advent of the Internet and continues to yield insights into many important problems. Sounds a bit dry? Don't worry. Albert-László Barabási writes in a lively style (there's nary an equation in sight) with fun, informative anecdotes. The tale of how he and other scientists discovered "the laws of networks" unfolds like a detective story. After reading this book, you'll see networks everywhere and gain deeper insight into disparate phenomena, from biological systems to business organizations to the economics of "increasing returns." We recommend this clear, accessible book to anyone who has ever wondered about the ubiquitous webs that encompass all things. This is popular science at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the layman.......2007-04-11

One of the best books I've read about the subject, especially good for those being introduced to the subject of graph theory and network thinking. One of the few technical page-turners I've had the pleasure to enjoy! Really, could not put it down!

5 out of 5 stars If you liked Freakonomics..........2007-01-12

...then you'll love the connections drawn in this text. It more than touches on the realities of "Six Degrees of Separation" (as well as Kevin Bacon!)in an interesting, readable format. You don't need to be a scientist or a mathematition to understand the links, networks, and nodes assessed in this book.

I must admit that it started out a bit slow, but I recommend you stick it out for an enlightening outlook on the interconnectivity of everything.
