Customer Reviews:
I love US Weekly..........2007-09-08
I love the magazine itself, so I loved just being nosey and checking out what everyone was wearing.
The Ideal Fashion Book.......2006-02-14
This book is full of pictures of celebs dos and don'ts, a girl's dream of a fashion book; lots of dos pictures to admire, some don'ts pictures to give you a giggle & learn a lesson or two, and a side serving of witty comments. Perfect for people who loves fashion and the editor sure gets it.
Unlike the "Instyle - secret of style" book which I think is a shame of the money, too much text & sketch, and not enough photographs to make their points. Save your money and stick to their magazines (which are great).
Future editors, take note, if you're collaborating a book on fashion for people who loves fashion (= visual people), we want to SEE it, not Read it.
At last!.......2005-08-26
I love the pictures of celebrities in different styles (classic, creative, all-american sexy, ultra-glam) of clothes. It gives you lots of ideas/pictures and suggestions on what to do/not do. I also really like the sections in the back that cover topics such as: small bust, big bust, if you are short, full figure, pear shaped, pregnancy (10 pages), and suggestions for your age range (only goes up to 40's).
I would also highly recommend "InStyle, Secrets of Style: the complete guide to dressing your best every day" as this is a little more thorough on how each item of clothing should fit, and what kind of styles to try for your body-type (curvy, short, boyish, narrow shoulders, broad shoulders, full bust, small bust, tummy issues, short-waisted/long legs, long-waisted/short legs, bottom heavy).

Both of these books have helped me so much when I go shopping, so I know before I get to the store what would work best for me. I have read "Secrets of Celebrity Style" and "Instyle Secrets of Style" cover-to-cover several times, referring to them often. As a result, I have gotten comments on how much better dressed I look.
I am only disappointed that these books weren't published 5-10 years ago, when I really needed it!
A guilty pleasure.......2005-07-19
Just like the magazine, the book is a guilty pleasure with the bonus of many sound fashion and beauty tips. I will be referring to it often.
Glam up your look!.......2005-05-25
From US Weekly magazine comes "US Secrets of Celebrity Style: A Crash Course in Dressing Like the Stars". This is a nifty oversized, softcover that focuses on how the stars dress to look good and grab attention and how you can too.
US Secrets reveals the classic elements that the stars have worn for years that are timeless in appeal and make people wonder - "Who is she?" The book starts with the white shirt. You see Ingrid Bergman wearing the classic in 1951 and Mary J. Bilge updating the white shirt look today. Other basics are covered like scarfs, sunglasses, the little black dress etc.
Then the book delves into occasions like what to wear to a summer wedding or how to ultra-glam up an evening. Celebrities of today are used with looks you can copy and get ideas from.
Vintage looks are shown with modern updates.
The book also includes best bets for body styles, age style, accessories and more. What to do and what NOT to do are covered. Celebrities range from classic icons like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O to the newly minted Paris Hilton and Tara Reid. Tons of celebs..Uma Thurman, Kirsten Dunst, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, Selma Blair and more..(One caveat, though they have a special section on what to wear for your age, most of the celebs featured throughout the book are under 35.)
The book is a good source for inspiration. My daughter loves fashion. Looking through the book we find different ways to wear the pieces she has in her wardrobe without spending a bundle.
Jennifer Aniston is not a favorite of mine so I am not fond of the books cover. However, I read a comment in a magazine that said that though Ms. Aniston is not super attractive her total packaging ie grooming and clothes gives her a lot of star appeal. So that makes the cover understandable. Still I think a book on clothing and style could have had a better cover than a blow up of her face.
Overall the book is a good read and packed with good tips and ideas.

Customer Reviews:
Must have series.......2007-01-17
I first got hook on Alita, from the anime short done years back. Since then I've been hook on the managa series and this no different. Once you read one you will be sure to want the rest of the series.
Volumne 7.......2007-01-12
I thought this book almost merited a 5 rating. I was disappointed in the beginning volumes of the Last Order series but as it goes along, the volumes definitely improve and volume 7 will not disappoint.
Series has lost its focus.......2006-08-31
When volume 9 of Battle Angel Alita was made non-canon and Last Order was announced, the sequel promised to provide answers to questions such as the fate of Alita's creator, Ido, and new questions posed by the rewrite, such as the result of the Secret of Tiphares arc and the location of Alita's operator, Lou.
Instead, the plot of Last Order is advancing at a glacial pace and these answers are nowhere to be found. Ido and Lou, as well as the vast majority of characters introduced in Battle Angel Alita, have yet to be seen except in brief flashbacks. Plot reveals are scarce and those given, such as those of Alita's past, are somewhat trivial and unsatisfying as compared to discovering the fates of characters we've seen in the first series. If this series resolves everything it set out to, it will likely span *another* 9 volumes.
The last few volumes have not dealt with search and advancement, and have instead been dedicated to a tournament, seemingly little more than a plot device to introduce numerous unnecessary new characters; it is certainly telling that the end of recent volumes includes a "create-a-character" contest. Of course, Kishiro has done massive filler before with motorball, but a tournament is nowhere near as novel or interesting. Hell, I'm not sure how many old-school shonen animes *don't* have a tournament scene, which makes it seem all the more tired.
It would be unfair of me to claim outright that Kishiro does not know where he is going. Instead, I will state my opinion that he worked better when pressured into condensing an ending into a single, more satisfying volume 9 of the original series. His current work appears to be a case of too many plot ideas interacting and inhibiting the series's potential.
Despite my complaints, Kishiro's strengths are on full display in Volume 7. The ZOTT tournament allows beautiful full page fight scenes and great characterization of Alita and her clones, easily the most interesting of the newly introduced characters. The advancement of art and style can be easily seen when comparing this volume with Kishiro's initial work. The man can draw.
I will buy future volumes and wait for resolution, but I'm beginning to wish I just pretended that Battle Angel Alita volume 9 really did end the series. If you haven't read the original series, read it. However, consider waiting for this current series to be resolved before diving into it.
Not the same..........2006-07-18
I have the entire original series (Battle Angel Alita). I have read it and enjoyed it enormously!
This 'Last Order' series is missing the soul that the original series had.
The characters are flat, caricatures of the originals just going through the motions.
Disappointing!
I have been remiss..........2006-06-23
Really, as a reviewer type person I should have reviewed all the Last Order books, not just 2 and 7. Be that as it may, I can now write a comprehensive review of the series till this point and its "major" plot thrusts.
The Last Order books have been filling in for the some-what rushed ending of Battle Angel book 9, a treasure though it was. Readers had yet to learn who Yoko really was, about her life on Mars, and the events of the past that led her to being dumped in the scrap pile. The short vision we did see had us believe Yoko was an a-moral terrorist type who fought for the wrong side in a war and was brought low by a totally unexplained ethereal enemy.
Now Yoko, aka Alita, is a fully formed character who lives, has emotions, as well as regrets and such. Although to this point Alita only see's Yoko in flashback, she now comes face to face with her past self as a actual personality. And she, in the seventh book, finally becomes one with her past. After 15 books(right? or is it 16?) that is a awesome plot evolution for long time readers.
This growth of Alita takes up the first section on the book and is well enlivened by a classic fight, the first between Alita and another Panzer Kunster. The rest of the book is taken up by the ZOT battles which, I found, to be equally well written and story progressive, even if not in the main plot. An underlying story of how even the best intentions lead to unintended results* is one which has present day resonance. In its second social attack, book seven not only illuminates the deadlieness of an innocent mind given too much power, it also highlights that creating something dark to defeat something dark still leaves you with something dark, whichever wins. All this boils down to a slow fight but a pleasant, if bloody, introspection. Well worth hitting the second half of the book for, critics aside.
As a personal note, I notice that many reviewers, whom I respect seeing as they obviously love these books enough to write about them, are dismissive of the sub plots in the Last Order books. That's fair, given these subplots have little to do with the original books and they keep these books from moving towards conclusion. However, I think Kishiro is smarter than he is being labled. The ZOT is laden with symbolizm and hidden meaning which seems lost on many. So while the main story only gets half the play, Kishiro's wonderfully cynical mind gets to speak out about what he really wants to say. And since these books are art, it seems only fair to cock our heads, look at it ascance, then make opinions based on the subject matter rather than the medium.
* By this I mean the squeaky clean image of the Stellar Nursery Society gets a shot in the kidney. All too often people stand for an ideal without truly weighing what their position leads to.

Dennis Miller - The Raw Feed
ASIN: 0060505370 |
Book Description
In this fourth installment of his acclaimed Rants series, bestselling author, Emmy Award-winning talk-show host, and wisecracking analyst for ABC's Monday Night Football Dennis Miller makes hamburger meat out of society's most sacred cows as only he can, with the kinds of allusions that require high SAT scores -- or at least a smart crib sheet.
This time around, Miller takes on child stars with rap sheets, women with bigger muscles than his own, herbs you don't smoke, God, and football. As always, nothing is out-of-bounds.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2006-01-28
I don't know if it's age or recent political "reconversions", but this latest "rant" entry is neither as biting or funny as his previous releases. On his most recent appearance on Leno (January 20, 2006), he showed when he isn't lauding Dubya or the war, he still shows signs of humor ("As a nation we're getting fat...if you're built like a tank, don't wear the top").
But in this book, even the non-political rants don't have the bite as they did in "I Rant, Therefore I Am" or "Ranting Again".
Perhaps, if he writes another "rant" book, he could do one on his experiences on "Saturday Night Live", since he was noticably absent from the "Live From New York" book. If Jay Mohr can do it, Dennis can...and he may just recapure my respect.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
Solid, unique comedy writing..........2005-02-06
...and he goes after anyone and everything, despite what some of the bitter, angry, neurotic, self-styled liberal reviewers here would have you believe. I think it was Mark Twain who wrote something like "sacred cow makes the best hamburger"; Miller understands and embodies this.
Stick With Cable-TV.......2004-05-19
Miller has now delved into movies, network television, and print. Virtually all of those endeavors have produced nothing but embarrassing additions to his body of work. Three strikes and you're out Dennis. Do a favor for your potential fans and stick with what you're good at -- monologues on cable-TV. This book is vulgar, not the least bit entertaining, and gives the impression that it was thrown together in a very short time. In fact, it is so bad that I wouldn't be surprised if Miller did nothing more than allow his name to be associated with this sham of an effort.
cheaper than toilet paper at 48 cents.......2004-03-25
It's nice to see that this book has found it's price point. Dennis Miller is about as funny as colon cancer. Someone outta put a rubberband around this guys head so it'll shrivel up and fall off.
Dennis Is Going With What's Popular, But He's Behind.......2003-09-01
Ok Ok. Maybe my first review of Dennis Miller's book was harsh, so I rewrote it. But what do you expect when reviewing a book from a person who talks complete nonsense?!! Dennis TRIES to be funny, but he fails miserably. Dennis is at his best, when he avoids leaning to the left or to the right. When he could praise and criticized BOTH sides when they deserved it, is when he shined. These days, Dennis has gone from common sense to a complete right-winger. I guess it because these days it's popular to bash Democrats and be a conservative. But I guarantee you, the time of the extreme left is dead and the extreme right will be dead in a few years. There's no place for either in the near future. I suspect that Dennis knows this, which explains why he is trying to seek office. LOL. He missed the boat 9 years ago to be an extreme conservative. Moderates are the ones who will control the political landscape in the future. Perhaps then, Dennis will get it right and become moderate once again. This book is basically him trying to cash in with the time.

Book Description
In his engaging book, Robert Glatzer offers a detailed and insightful look behind the scenes of filmmaking. Written in a witty and knowledgeable style, this is a basic guide to understanding film. Glatzer deals with movies as an art form, not just as entertainment, and gives the reader valuable insights into just what makes one film better than another. The book has chapters on how a director directs, styles of comedy, musicals, and even what all the credits mean. Glatzer analyzes a number of important films, helping readers understand the key elements of writing, directing and acting. This book will make readers into better critics of the films they see. Glatzer includes a list and description of what he calls "all the films you have to see before you die."
Customer Reviews:
Beyond Popcorn.......2007-01-14
This book was a required text for a film class I took. It is good and interesting, but not very long--I read the whole thing in one sitting. A good choice for those interested in critiquing films.
He's a critic, not a teacher........2001-10-28
I've been doing a lot of reading about film in the last year and I have to say that Glatzer's guide was not as helpful as the other books I've read. When I compare Glatzer's guide to Jim Piper's guide, "Get the Picture?: The Movie Lover's Guide to Watching to Films," I fnd that while Glatzer may be a good movie critic, he, unlike Piper, is not a very good teacher of the subject.
Much of Glatzer reads like moive review of films instead of a guide for reading films critically. His first few chapters provide some basic insight on the differences between movies and theatre productions and the role of the camera in flims, but the rest of book is not as helpful as it could be.
The chapter on laughter in film, for example, is not useful. He tries to explain humor by focusing on the work of Buster Keaton, but many of us contemporary film goers might not find Keaton all that funny. The same goes for his chapters on musicals, foriegn films, and movie credits--each of them are not very helpful for understanding contemporary films.
Perhaps it's his last chapters that save this book. Glatzer provides a list of "must see films" and a list of guide questions you should ask yourself about a movie. I wish Glatzer had used those questions to develop his guide.
Finally, I was also disappointed that neither Glatzer or Piper provide a multicultural examination of films. There are so many films by directors of color that don't get examined in either of the guides. The contributions of Spike Lee, Wayne Wang, Charles Burnett, John Singleton, Melvin Van Peeples, Julie Dash, and Camille Billops (documentary film maker), should have been include in their guide.
I guess if you're coming from more of classical film tradition, Glatzer guide might be helpful, but if you're looking for guide to more contemporary, as well as classic and foreign films, check out Piper's book.
It's All in the Style.......2001-07-14
Mr. Glatzer has a wonderful readable style which reminds me of his popular NPR movie reviews. No, I don't agree with all his conclusions --I happen to think THE ENGLISH PATIENT is a virtuoso film --but it is a treat to imagine arguing film with this gentleman. If every non-fiction author had his easy-going and intelligent style, I might be tempted to supplement my fiction diet with a few books the likes of BEYOND POPCORN. It is a triumph.
See movies more sharply.......2001-06-06
This book was just what I needed. I love to watch movies, and I know what I like, but I never really knew why I liked them. It is the perfect book for someone like me who has never studied film but would like to know more.
It covers how movies are made, the roles of all the folks involved, and what separates good writing, directing, or acting from the bad.
Also his "all time best" lists, agree or disagree, are fun to discuss.
Finally, it is written in a fun, fast-paced style.
Enjoy.
Movie lovers guide.......2001-03-21
It may not be the definitive guide to movies and/or reviews but this readable book is fun! Any movie buff will relish the opportunity to check his/her own favorites against the authors; to bemoan the absence of a personal favorite; or cheer the mention of a forgotten oldie. A good addition to our shelves so thumbs up (pardon the reference to other critics)

The Lost Lennon Interviews
Geoffrey Giuliano , and
Vrnda Giuliano
Manufacturer: Adams Media Corporation
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 1558506381 |
Customer Reviews:
not a "must-have" item.......2007-03-27
The most interesting (and complete) parts of Giuliano's compilation are candid interviews given by John & Yoko during the 1969-1971 era 'bed-ins.' Beyond that, don't bother. The rest of the "lost interviews" are of irrelevant characters that may have, at one time or another, had contact with Lennon at some point in his life.
The most disheartening aspect of Giuliano's work lies in his wholly uneven treatment of Yoko Ono. He speaks warmly with her and Sean in one section, then brands her an egomaniacal, pennypinching witch a few pages later. Utterly shameless.
Bane of Beatledom.......2005-04-15
Geoffrey Giuliano has made a career of writing dubious books about the Beatles. He strikes up a friendship with, say, McCartney's ex-Wings sidekick Denny Laine, and suddenly there's a lot of bitter material for a lurid look at the rich and famous. Geoffrey's books are littered with factual errors, and he's the kind of guy who loves to place himself in the narrative of his books in any way possible. Soon we'll have an account of the time Giuliano bumped into the back of Ringo's automobile and got a chance to talk to his chauffeur. Unfortunately, his books have some exclusive axe-grinding, but it seems a shame to support his particular brand of self-promoting hack job. The interviews in this book weren't actually lost, you understand, it just took this enterprising fellow to cull them all together, with a few new interviews of his own thrown in. If you'd like to see this collection of Lennon and Lennon-related interviews and press conferences, try to find this book at a library. Or better yet, seek out the primary sources. That goes for any of his books. And stay away from Giuliano's "biographies," unless you must know Denny Laine's wife's favorite hairdresser.
LENNON AT LAST!.......2004-02-01
Here is John Lennon the poet, composer, humorist and humanitarian, and, oh yes, Beatle. These interviews are indeed lost treasures from an author who obviously knows and loves his subject. Congrats to Mr. Giuliano for offering these rare gems to an ever Beatles hungry world. Packed, too, with dozens of unseen photgraphs.
At least these are with the actual subject..........2002-11-29
Geoffrey Giuliano must be suffering writers' block. Or else he just prefers to not do much heavy-lifting, because once again this so-called, self-appointed "expert" has tossed out another slap-dash collection of common old interviews.
Isn't it nice that a clerk can make such a good living?
Lennon Like You Have Never Seen Him.......2002-08-05
Believe me, when they say these interviews are lost, it is no lie! I have been ready Beatles books for years and many authors just seem to cut and paste their books together with no thought of orginality, or rarity. Geoffrey Giuliano however is the exception packing this book with interviews I bet John Lennon himself has never seen.

Customer Reviews:
No TV tonight!.......2000-06-09
I think I will try weaving a big yarn web in our tv room tonight (just like the book suggests! ), and turn off that ol' TV. It will be a whole lot better for the kids (and us) than watching Third Rock from the Sun, don't you think? I'm excited about the variety of pretend and play ideas in this book, and am especially interested in the chapter that gives pretending projects and activities to go with favorite children's books like Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Things are. Yes, even Curious George is there!
HOORAY! Turn off the TV.......1999-05-29
This is the best book I have seen on what kids can make to motivate and enhance their pretend time. Let's turn off more tv's and get kids busy with their imagainations! Excellent book.
Email Sharing Groups Contribute to Book.......1999-05-28
Many of the ideas in this book were contributed through email sharing groups with MaryAnn, from teachers and parents all over the world. If you like pretending, or think it's important for your kids, you will like this book. All of the 44 people who contributed to it feel the same way!

Book Description
Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques, 2nd Edition, provides an in-depth explanation of candlestick plotting and analysis, conveying to the reader, in easy-to-understand language, the author's years of practical experience in this increasingly popular and dynamic approach to market analysis. It includes hundreds of examples that span the equity, futures, fixed-income, and foreign exchange markets and shows how candlestick charting techniques can be used in almost any market. It has been thoroughly updated to include:
* New techniques and strategies
* The author's concept of the Convergence (when a series of signals converge at one zone, thus increasing the chances for a market turn from that area)
This new edition broadens the book's focus and all new updated charts, and information on several new areas such as day trading and how candlestick charting can be used to improve returns and help decrease market risk.
It includes everything from the basics, such as constructing the candlesticks and learning the patterns, to advanced topics, such as the rules of multiple technical techniques.
Whether you are new to candlestick charts or a seasoned pro-the reward will be immediate and long lasting.

-The Missing Puzzle For Your Trading System-.......2007-07-23
Most of us who spends the extra time to read and continue to improve our knowledge on trading and investing, are likely to have adopted a trading system ( Be it through books, seminars, courses ). However, given the potential risks involved even with all the tools and knowledge we are armed with for our trading battles, we still have a high chance of making a loss in our trades. ( Human errors and mistakes / Human Emotions / Inexperience / Never do homework...etc all plays a part in the trade turning sour )
One of the missing puzzle that i have discovered myself is the interpretation of candlesticks that tells the story of the market sentiment for that particular stock at that particular time. Before learning the meaning of candlesticks and charting with them, i normally used what i have learned ( A trading system that i paid a hefty $5000 SGD for ) to decide whether i enter a trade or not. However, something is missing... That is gonna be major reversal patterns that occur at tops or bottoms. I have lost $$$ as a result for several trades that were supposed to yield excellent returns using the system i learnt all due to... YES CANDLESTICK REVERSAL PATTERNS. I still remember them to be Morning star, Shooting Star and Bullish Engulfing pattern. After learning these patterns, the results were shocking and marvellous. My losses are cut to a minimum, my self esteem and confidence to execute a trade has improved tremendoulsy.
I never leave home for my trading battle without it.
The formulas are all wrong.......2007-05-17
An interesting book on candlestick - the author has much knowledge of candle stick. It's entertaining. But apparently the auothr made terribly wrong on the formulars such as RSI and stochastic. I understand that reading candlestick does not need to know the formulars but they should be correct if they appear in the book. I guess the author expected reader only read the candlestick, instead of looking at the formulars. Anyway it's the best book on the subject.
Great on Candles!.......2007-05-12
This text is a great intro. to the basics of reading the Candlestick charts, and I found that the plurality of patterns analyzed in the text will be very helpful in future trading decisions and software development. The author has a good reputation and is quoted widely, so the quality of the text is not surprising...
