the philosophy and the work.......2004-12-18
This has several excellent articles by the master of the Modern Primatives (Fakir) detailing rituals and works over a very long period of time throughout his life, as well as several others at the forefront of the scene and some relatively unknowns too. This book definitely takes a more serious approach to the philosophy and work of the movement beyond just a dinky tattoo or piercing, and talking about body modification and discipline which are absolutely more relevant, interesting and visually complex.
Re-search is a great source for any subject that it is on, and to get these for like 5$ is a bargain of demonic proportions.
Book Description
Throughout history rulers have used clothes as a form of legitimization and propaganda. While palaces, pictures, and jewels might reflect the choice of a monarch’s predecessors or advisers, clothes reflected the preferences of the monarch himself. Being both personal and visible, the right costume at the right time could transform and define a monarch’s reputation. Many royal leaders have known this, from Louis XIV to Catherine the Great and from Napoleon I to Princess Diana.
This intriguing book explores how rulers have sought to control their image through their appearance. Mansel shows how individual styles of dress throw light on the personalities of particular monarchs, on their court system, and on their ambitions. The book looks also at the economics of the costume industry, at patronage, at the etiquette involved in mourning dress, and at the act of dressing itself. Fascinating glimpses into the lives of European monarchs and contemporary potentates reveal the intimate connection between power and the way it is packaged.
Customer Reviews:
Scattered, not that inspiring, more's the pity........2007-02-17
Call me a costume junkie. While I am certainly not a fashionista, I do love to look at clothing, and especially that of the past and how it played such an important role in the past. Fashion has been used to determine status, flaunt power and general dazzle the lower classes -- even in our modern world with its guise of equality still hankers after snob appeal when it comes to clothing.
Philip Mansel's book, Dressed to Rule: Royal and Court Costume from Louis XIV to Elizabeth II takes a sweeping look at how clothing was used by monarchs to determine who was in, and who was out. In, of course, meant that you had access to the monarch, a neccesity for those who wanted to have power -- and out, was just that -- outside of court culture and power.
Introduction: the Power of Clothes
A very brief essay on how clothing served as both a message of style and education but also of power.
Splendour
In the past, clothing at a royal court was a clear signal of who you were, and more importantly, how much money and wealth did you have. This chapter was fairly interesting, especially as it showed the links between native industry -- in France it was the silk industry in Lyon -- and a court that was voracious in needing a constant supply of fine fabrics, and how changing tastes in clothing could enhance or ruin the national economy.
Identity
Here the emphasis is more on where are you from than anything else. It starts with George IV of England -- otherwise known as the Prince Regent -- and how he made the Scottish kilt and tartan so popular. Then in an about face, the author abruptly switches to national dress in Poland, and how it tried to succeed in the face of upcoming division by its neighboring, stronger empires around it. Interesting, but confusing.
Service
Namely, this chapter goes into uniforms, and how in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century the wearing of military clothing for royalty -- both men and women -- helped to establish authority.
Revolutions
You can't really mention royal fashion and not talk about Marie Antoinette, who has come down through history as a spendthrift nitwit. What I did find interesting about this was that the revolutionaries with their adoption of a more simplistic dress that sought to equalise everyone did more to distress the economy -- with no one to buy luxury goods, entire cities and regions sank into economic ruin.
The Age of Gold
The French textile industry improved once Napoleon staged his coup and declared himself emperor. This time the point was to appease vanity and spectacle with the lavish use of gold embroidery, which depending on your point of view, could be splendid, or hopelessly parvenu.
Empires
Prussia, England, Russia and Austria during the nineteenth and early twentieth century get mention here, but where it gets really interesting is when it starts talking about the mideastern kingdoms of Iran and Afghanistan, with a mention of Osama bin Laden towards the end.
While I certainly enjoyed reading about the topic of the historical role of clothing, I had a hard time actually following Mansel's style of writing; it's clunky at best, chopping up ideas and trying to serve them neatly, but he leaps about from subject to subject with little continuity to really link it all together. He also pitches in foreign phrases and terms, assuming that his reader can read French right off the bat, and so doesn't bother to provide a translation. That's annoying. Within each chapter he leaps about wildly from place to place, shifting time as well; but when the next chapter opens, he'll start off back a century or two. That makes cohesion very difficult to follow.
I would be hesitant to recommend this book. I found it to be difficult reading without any real theme or new ideas to keep it all pulled together. Sure, it's packed with plenty of little snippets and details -- why red heels on shoes were so important in monarchial France, to give an example -- but unless the reader is involved in historical writing or costume design, it's not much more than a curiosity.
Which is a pity. The book is filled with photos and black and white illustrations, along with an insert of colour photographs. The notes, bibliography and index are extensive, and give plenty of ideas for further research. To sum up, it gets a three star rating for the general reader, and maybe a four for those who are particularly interested in this topic.
Somewhat recommended.

Bite Off Your Own Finger............2007-04-01
I first read the Kabuki series where she was in the hospital run by the people who hired and trained her (and was blown away) so I was dying to read this earlier story that gives her back story. At first I was a little disappointed by the art (this is more comic book) but the story was more linear but very shakespearean (to steal from a reviewer before me). When she faces them down and bites off her own finger I was awed. It explained the hand injury from the prior book I read and was such a powerful play on the Yakuza chopping off the finger for forgiveness motiff. I loved this book. I can't understand why it is not being made into a movie by Quentin Tarentino or Mike Takeshi.
Everyone Should Read This!.......2006-07-31
I just finished reading this book and I can't find any better word to describe it than amazing. I started reading earlier today and could not stop until I reached the back cover. The way David Mack weaves this story so intricately is like nothing else. I don't understand why his writing doesn't get the same kind of recognition as someone such as Alan Moore. I was skeptical going in and the only reasons I ended up buying it was because David is a good friend of one of my favorite artists, Andy Lee, and he gave me the book himself for half price. But now I want to go back and give him the other $10 because he deserves every penny.
Not only is the writing incredible but the art is so unique for this graphic novel format. The page layout and design is like no other. On one page you feel like you're looking at some great historic painting and the next page it feels like you're watching the latest summer blockbuster.
The story has so much to offer and is so varied it's hard to compare it to other graphic novels. It's like Sleeper, meet V for Vendetta, meets Sin City... and some.
The most innovative and satisfying graphic novel I have ever read.......2005-09-25
I love the new Kabuki series KABUKI: The Alchemy currently being published by Marvel Comics.
So I read this first volume to see where things started.
I was stunned at the level of emotion, characterization, and intelligence put into this work.
The story was fascinating and insightful. But most of all, I connected with the psychology and emotion of the main character. There are a lot of twists and turns that you would never expect. Sometimes the events were even shocking.
After reading this book, I bought and read all the other collected Kabuki volumes. And they continue to get better as the series goes. Highly recommended.
Mack's writing and art evolve and grow in sophistication in the later books, but this one still has a classic and timeless quality to it. You can't deny the raw power and emotion that is conveyed in this first volume. Even though this is Mack's first work, you can tell it is a legend in the making.
This book is grand and mythical in its scope. An epic scale like Watchmen. And the storytelling is truly innovative and ahead of it's time.
I can't recommend it enough.
As a writer, Mack's only peers in graphic novels would be Alan Moore, Neil Gaimen, and Grant Morrison.
silly and tired...so 90's.......2005-05-15
I really didn't like this book. I can see what he's trying to get at, but it's just a sloppy way of going around it. I bought this because I got a box of graphic novels from my brother carl...Hi Carl!. stationed in Korea. And a lot were Kabuki. he kept saying "you've got to read the first one or it won't make sense."
So I bought the first one. and I've seen better art. so I can't dig the art. I've read better stories. The author seems to have read them too. so I can't really get into buying one writers stuff when I'm actually reading anothers. So Carl's like you have to read the new color ones they're way better than the black and white ones. I'd rather buy another used copy of The Lion , The Witch and The Wardrobe. Couldn't get into this. Not really about any of the things that it claims to be about. But I really think it wants to be... which makes it even sadder than the story the writer was trying to tell.
The rising sun of art.......2004-12-21
Circle of Blood is a transcendent work of art and David Mack is one the the great artists of our deranged and crazy times. This work is a revenge tragedy with all of the Jacobean resonances but it creeps up on you like a spider and bites you with the most soft and subtle poisons.
There is a Shakespearean quality to the Circle of Blood - the feeling that we are reading about great events that transcend the dull nothings that make up so much of our lives. Evil has never before been quite so evil and good ( if it exists at all) has never been so much on the run.
The integration of the plot and the characters and the images the profoundly poetical language is almost perfect. There are flaws in this epic tragedy so reminescent of Kirosawa's Ran - but I readily forgave them because I understood that I was gazing upon a grotesque masterpiece - a masterpiece that indicted the whole of the corrupt militaristic, politically insane, and economically debauched order that we now live in. But this indictment is not done with self-righteous fake anarchist whining and rage. It is a matter of style.
This work is delicate as a feather and as brutal as a car crash. It smashes you in the heart. Considering the current corruption of Japan, getting smashed in the heart is a triumph, a horribly beautiful triumph of David Mack's rising sun of art.

Book Description
The 65th-anniversary edition of an educational classic proves its relevance in examining today's educational quandaries
McGraw-Hill first published The Saber- Tooth Curriculum in 1939, and it has remained a classic bestseller to this date. The book is just as relevant and applicable to the key questions in education today as it was when it was first published.
With tongue firmly in cheek, Peddiwell takes on the contradictions and confusion generated by conflicting philosophies of education, outlining the patterns and progression of education itself, from its origins at the dawn of time to its culmination in a ritualistic, deeply entrenched social institution with rigidly prescribed norms and procedures.
This fascinating exploration is developed within a fanciful framework of fictional lectures, given by Professor J. Abner Peddiwell, doyen in the History of Education at Petaluma State College. In a humorous fable, Peddiwell illustrates the progress of education and give valuable insights into how it could continue to develop in the decades to come.

Sunset Of The Saber Tooth.......2006-03-23
Do you like books where you don't know what's going to happen next? If you do this is for you. The kids Jack and Annie are trying to save Morgen. The kids nearly freeze. They found cave men coats and use them. Will they get eaten up by a saber-tooth? Thios is the best book ever if you read it. If you like adventure then this is for you. This is recommended for 2nd through 5th grade.

Still relevant, still unique nearly 70 years later.......2005-07-05
I doubt THE SABER-TOOTH CURRICULUM would be produced today, a sad commentary on our times. No contemporary publisher would distribute the first edition to educators for the sake of discourse and no doubt a little shrewd marketing like McGraw did in the late 1930s, and no pointed but whimsical and very funny satire on pedagogical history in the age of theory rendered in opaque language would get very far. What is a better commentary on our times is that this wonderful book is still in print and still venerated despite the trouble it would have in getting born now.
A thumbnail sketch: a man, Raymond Wayne, the putative author (actually, the real author is Harold Raymond Wayne Benjamin, who died in 1969 and is still admired as an educational thinker), is in a bar in Tijuana, knocking back tequila daisies when he runs into his old professor, J. Abner Peddiwell, Ph.d., who, with considerable help from the daisies, agrees to embark on a seminar illustrating the history and issues of pedagogy. His witty example is told through the story of the cave man who first decided that children needed to learn the essentials of fish-grabbing, little horse clubbing and tiger-scaring. Out of this grows a complex system that includes teacher accreditation, higher education, Ph.D. programs, progressive theory, conservative theory, teacher unions, the rise of phys ed. and the question that never goes away, do we teach children how to think or what to think?
It is enlightening to read how fresh the issues are nearly 70 years later. One only wonders what hay Benjamin would make with the likes of today's educational soup of politics, law, economics and the headlining controversies that plague the profession.
Book Description
The first in a new series about classic filmmaking and filmmakersWith a new introduction and afterword, the only book on the making of Steven Spielberg's classic film, backed by new raves from Pauline Kael, Peter Biskind, Bryan Singer, and Rob Reiner, among others! This compelling insider's story of how the famous director, at age 26, made the movie that made film history is revived to coincide with Universal Pictures 25th Anniversary DVD Collector's Edition launch. Hired by Spielberg as a screenwriter to work with him on the set, Gottlieb chronicled the extraordinary year-long adventure of how Benchley's #1 bestselling novel was transformed into the movie that won three Oscars® and became the highest grossing film of that time. First published in 1975, The Jaws Log generated 17 printings and sold over 2 million copies. This new edition includes a photo section, a new introduction by Benchley and a lengthy author's afterword with updates on the people and events involved in the film.
Customer Reviews:
A light, entertaining read with a "you are there" feel.......2004-10-13
Even though we're now in the era of comprehensive "making of" documentaries that accompany so many movies on DVD, it's still fun to pick up a good old "behind the scenes/making of" movie tie-in book from time to time. Carl Gottlieb's updated edition of his "The Jaws Log" is a good example of how entertaining such a book can be. It's nothing spectacular, just a solid, anecdote-laced account of a movie now famous for its production horror stories. Lots of new footnotes (about 20 pages worth) update the reader on what's happened since the book's original 1975 debut as well as providing further details not in the earlier edition, but it should be said that the original 1975 manuscript was still pretty candid for a merchandising tie-in.
Good insight.......2003-07-11
I am a great fan of "Jaws" since it scared me when I was seven years old and it never lost it's fascination for me. I am also a great fan of all the works of Steven Spielberg, so I had to have that book.
It provides a very interesting and sweet insight into the hardships, troubles and sheer unsurmountable problems that make it almost unbelievable what a brilliant film came out of all that turmoil. The book is more concentrated on the personal and human stories. I miss a more technical insight. The filmmaking aspect is not so much described. I would have liked to read something about the way Spielberg directed the actors and Bruce the shark, of course. I would have liked to have known something about the camerawork, the editing of Mother Cutter, Verna Fields and all the other filmmaking departments. With all the little anecdotes about personal animosities or friendships, the author forgot to mention the basic, pure filmmaking process. But maybe it is to boring for filmmakers, or to embarrassing to talk about that.
All in all: I recommend this to anybody who has something to do with film. Whenever you have problems and trouble on a set, read it. You will wear a smile again and know, that nothing can come as bad as the shooting of Jaws. - And that the worst of all circumstances on set can sometimes make the best of all films.
Ah - yes. This book truly warms my heart. :).......2003-02-04
For 'Jaws' addicts like myself, this book truly allows us to experience the sheer beauty of the making of the best man vs. fish story ever told. Gottlieb tells a rollicking tale and his afterword - written from the vantage point of 25 years - is wonderful, wonderful stuff. So turn on the John Williams music, set your DVD to a low rumble in the background, crack open this book and "farewell & adieu to you fair Spanish ladies . . ."
The Jaws Log.......2002-06-01
Carl Gottlieb's book is a fascinating account of all that went on during the troubled production of Jaws is a well-illistrated account concerning all areas of production from the early begginings with Peter Benchley's screenplay to the film's worlwide box-office success. Originally written and released in 1976, this is one of those film books that instead of simply stating facts, also contains a wealth of info that makes it an enjoyable read. There are some audacious anecdotes about the clashes between the director, the stars and "Bruce", the shark that never worked. With candid opinions and numerous interesting details about the production, this book is a must-have for fans of Spielberg.
Worth the long wait.......2001-10-31
Gottleib gives a witty and insightful insider's account of the agonizingly protracted shooting schedule that produced one of the greatest films in history! His accounts of the production horrors, mishaps, over-runs, local hysteria (all these on a GOOD day of shooting) are as entertaining as the film itself. A great in-depth companion to the too-short documentary featured on the "Jaws" DVD (that documentary itself a shortened version of the spectacular one included in the Laserdisc Collector's Edition from the mid-1990's).

Fascinating--but obsolete.......2000-10-21
If you're a student of magic, technical theatre, or trick photography, this is an excellent historical text on how these things were done about 100 years ago. It's a fascinating period piece, and a limited amount of the material can be updated and applied to a modern setting, but much of the illusions it describes require gas lines, steam lines, and other non-standard stage accessories.
An armchair read of special effects.......1999-08-27
While this book may not have direct application, it still remains on of my favorite titles in my magic library. It discusses how larger effects are accomplished, from temple doors that open automatically, to photographic illusions. The material is dated, but can be cleverly adapted for performances.
Book Description
From the profit-minded managers who make up the brain trust at The Atlanta Consulting Group comes a simple new method hailed as a revolutionary management practice: learning to care.
Customer Reviews:
A so-so message delivered in a gooey-sweet wrapper.......2007-09-17
The basic principles this book tries to teach are, although obvious, certainly well-meaning, harmless, and probably practical enough if applied sensibly.
However, the gooey-sweet fluffy medium used to deliver the message makes it very hard to take seriously. In a corporate fairy-tale approach, the protagonist, a big, bad "abominable no-man" manager, suffers a near-death experience and is subsequently guided by an angel through his transformation into a manager with heart.
Please. If this is intended for real corporate managers and executives, why tell bad fairy stories? It makes the overall message much less appealing and far less likely to be taken seriously!
I gave it two stars, instead of one or none, because the underlying concepts do have *some* merit. However, this one really isn't worth your time or money.
Managing from the heart.......2007-08-13
All four writers from the Atlanta Consulting Group got into our hearts, minds and souls. Literarilly they looked for every given personality they came accross and provided counselling through the lovely voice of Selena. Don't we all who read this book multiple times need to do a toast for Hyler, Jack, Aubrey and Roy lives? They literally changed folks like me who felt chances in life ran out. I read the book as recommended literature from a business consulting group in Puerto Rico called InBusiness. Their slogan says, What motivates you? They are awsome.
Managing from the Heart........2006-03-10
I have been reading a lot of management books recently. This is the first one I didn't want to put down after 15 minutes. It's an interesting and easy read with relevant points to make managers better leaders.
Lessons for Your Heart and Head.......2004-02-06
This book was really good. It was moving and it was right-on in my opinion. The real-life application through Harry's story made the principles more meaningful. I continue to learn daily how important these principles are. Truly being on your employee's side, listening to them, trusting them and helping them grow and achieve. You'll never go wrong. I re-read this book to help me remember these truths when times get tough. Also, the professional editorial Amazon includes for this book is a bunch of hogwash in my opinion. The guy who wrote it must have had a block of ice for a heart and just a regular old block for a head!
You've Gotta Have Heart!.......2003-02-25
As a manager who has had to lay off employees during the recent economic downturn, I am glad I discovered this book. I applied the recommendations on dealing with employees and I feel it enabled both my staff and me to face the reality of business issues with mutual respect and understanding. I would recommend it to any level of manager.

Book Description
This book addresses the challenge of combating the growing levels of stress, disenchantment and frustration among people at work. According to the author, the root cause of this crisis is that we have been managing our lives and work divorced from heart and spirit. The book, therefore, advocates a new and holistic paradigm that synthesizes ancient wisdom with modern principles of management.

Palnik looks into the absurd side of love and destiny. By doing so; one comes away with a deeper appreciation of what is truly meaningful in life. Love is envisioned as both mystery and knowledge. Though this is a cartoon book full of laughs, it is also a serious reminder of why we are alive and what are lives are all about. It is a rare delight when deep philosophy is presented in a light hearted, funny, way. I treasure this book; perhaps because it was given to me as a gift by someone I love very much. This is a book to be given away as a gesture of Love.
