Customer Reviews:
Where are the cigar labels?.......2005-01-16
As usual Ms. Grafton provides color and variety in the graphics; this book on cigar labels, however, only has a handful of graphics which are actually labelled as 'cigar labels.' Some of the graphics only indicate they are related to cigars by the men smoking in the pictures. The graphics appear to be poor copies with no indication as to what they are. They could be pictures taken out of an old magazine with no cigar seals or maker.

This book blew me away. Beautiful color, wonderful picture selection - a collage artists dream!

Customer Reviews:
Never Judge A Book By It's Cover.......2000-06-14
This book is pretty on the inside and outside. Lots of colored photos. Plenty of photos of the shoes they have made and who they were made for. But no patterns to go with any of them except two. Very involved detailed process for making the solid shape to build your shoes upon. Brief explanations of various shoes over the centuries is nice, but don't expect to be able to design a shoe from many of the line drawings of shoes. The drawings are crude with no variations for each time period. They are not in color and mention no fabrics or popular colors for the time period. Nice glossary of tools used, shoe parts and techniques. There are 8 sources where you can purchased parts, etc. And last but not least there is a nice full page plug for the new upcoming book. I gave a three because the book is pretty, photos done nicely and process explanations were clear.
Great Book--More Shoe Photos, Please.......2000-01-30
I really loved this book. I have no experience in creating clothing for my 15½" Franklin Mint fashion dolls & the shoes that came with the dolls are a major disappointment. I hope to be able to rectify that soon with my husband's help in creating lasts & molds.
I gave the book 4 stars because, although the creation & design processes are detailed very thoroughly, there is a dearth of good photos of finished shoes. Many of the shoes that are shown tend to be somewhat hidden under the hem of a doll's outfit, the folds of artistically draped fabric, or the lid of a colorful candy box.
As suggestions for a second edition: If I could re-edit this book, I would add more finished shoes, add patterns for other popular fashion dolls (such as Franklin Mint vinyls,) & change the typeface font to something less fussy, with full margin justification.
Superb book with easy to follow instructions.......2000-01-29
I make and design clothes for the Madame Alexander doll Cissy and have always been frustrated with the scarcity/lack of selection/high price of shoes that I can buy for this doll. So, when I saw this book advertised in one of the many doll magazines I browse monthly, I knew I had to have it. The instructions are fairly easy to follow though sometimes the photographs showing the various steps are not located on the page facing the written instruction (the sole reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). The instructions for making a permanent last were very helpful. This book contains patterns for lasts & shoes for Cissy and Gene in particular, but the instructions and methods in this book could be applied to many dolls though I wouldn't recommend it for people wanting to make anything for Barbie. There are also instructions for making molds for heels (if you have a high-heeled doll like Cissy or Gene). Following these instructions, I successfully made my first pair of shoes, and, because I made them myself, I was able to customize them to the outfit I had made. A great book for making shoes for dolls for whom you cannot cheaply and easily buy decent shoes.

Book Description
Jamie Madrox, stabbed, staggering off a bus. Jamie Madrox, setting up a detective agency in the heart of Mutant Town. Jamie Madrox, a peaceful Shaolin priest. Which is the real Jamie Madrox? In this noir-esque thriller of a limited series, it's possible that even Madrox doesn't know anymore. Peter David, acclaimed for his run on X-Factor, reunites several of that title's most popular and whimsical characters - Jamie Madrox, Wolfsbane, and the aptly named Strong Guy - and sends them on an adventure of light and darkness. Featuring the incredibly moody pencils of Pablo Raimondi.
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly Well Done.......2006-08-05
I bought this book because i heard it was played as a noir kind of crime story. I EXPECTED that to be false advertising and to be sorely disappointed by "just another superhero" storyline. Like the title for this review implies, i was seriously surprised. The story is solid, the characters retained their quirky characteristics but still showed somewhat new faces as well. The noir/crime aspect is true to the advertiser's words. I love the mystery they're opening the door for and can't wait for the new XFactor series which is supposed to follow...
Multiplicity.......2005-06-19
I gotta admit, back in the day when I still followed the X-Men characters during their really classic first Claremont period (before they scattered amongst an explosive proliferation of X-titles), Madrox the Mutliple Man was one of my favorites. Hey, anyone can be struck by lightning or gamma rays or a magical spell and become super-strong, ultra-fast, or irradiated with the power cosmic. But how many people can Xerox themselves endlessly? True, at the interstellar levels at which the X-Men typically fight, it's not a terribly awesome power. "Oh, no--that guy over there just spawned five copies of himself! And now he threatens us with...fisticuffs! Hmm, better put the discombobulator beam on full auto."
But fanboy fave Peter David gave this guy some thought. Sure, he'd have a hell of a time giving even a C-grade villain any cause for worry. But if Madrox can make infinite copies of himself, and then absorb them and their memories later, what's to stop him from swarming across the world and learning how to do...everything? Thus our Madrox is now a man of myriad talents, which he puts to use as...a private eye. Personally, I might've gone into consultancy, but that provides fewer chances to impress women, engage in witty banter with sidekicks, and bandy about noir dialogue.
The plot is nothing earth-shattering and doesn't involve any horrific scheme by an uber-creep to destroy the Earth. It's much more suitable to the low-key and amiable scale of Madrox's world. But it's reasonably absorbing nonetheless. The big draw is the snappy wit and snarky attitude that Madrox displays. If you've read any of Peter David's novels, you should know what to expect here. (Except there are many fewer creaky and laboriously deployed puns.) What's also good here is that the author plays around a bit with the notion of having your own copies. What if some of them don't care for you? Or turn out cowardly or lazy or dimwitted? Sometimes, Madrox's copies are his own worst enemy.
The mini-series was definitely good enough that I would be very interested in seeing Madrox either in a David-written monthly title or further additional minis. I think there's still a lot to explore here, and taking a look at the street level of the Marvel Universe is something that's still rarely done. I look forward to more Madrox in the future.
Terribly underrated noir-ish comic with the Multiple Man.......2005-04-09
The great Peter David may have made a name for himself with his unheralded run on the Incredible Hulk, but his all too brief run on X-Factor showcased some of his best work. The character he wrote the best in that series, Jamie "Multiple Man" Madrox, gets his own mini-series here, and David manages to greatly utilize all the promising aspects of the character for the most part. Madrox is a private investigator these days, who after witnessing the death of one of his "dupes", investigates to find out just what happened and why. What he uncovers is a little conspiracy filled with mayhem and mutants, and the noir-ish presentation will pull the reader in. While some of it is a bit predictable, Madrox is a surprisingly great read with some witty storytelling by David, and great supporting roles from Jamie's former X-Factor teammates Strong Guy and Wolfsbane. The moody art by Pablo Raimondi is reason enough to check this TPB out alone, and the conclusion leaves the door open for David to work some more Madrox magic. All in all, older X-Men readers who dug the character of Madrox (and you all know who you are) would do well to give this a look.

Customer Reviews:
Witty, opinionated, and insightful.......2004-03-22
This little gem of a book reads like a tip book, expose, soapbox, gossip column and memoir. Auer is witty and funny, sometimes he had me laughing in stitches. For example, his description of chronic vibrato, "this physical evil generally may be traced to a group of sick or ailing nerves, hitherto undiscovered." Another diatribe on the lack of standards for violin teachers: "Many are indeed desirous of doing their best, but alas, having themselves been ill-taught, they spread the poison of their own ignorance broadcast, a plague which carries off many hapless innocents, victims of their pernicious teaching methods."
Auer was in the position to learn from, observe, and teach some of the best violinists of the last two centuries. He studied with Jacob Dont in Vienna and Joachim in Hanover, was a contemporary of Davidov, Wieniawski, Seidel, Wilhelmj, Sarasate, von Bulow, and taught Elman, Zimbalist, and Jascha Heifetz. Who would have known that Joachim had such stage fright, or that Mischa Elman almost died of coal-gas fumes the night before his debut?
The book has nice tips on fingering, bowing and tone production. He also devotes a chapter to nuance, the soul of interpretation and phrasing and another chapter to Style, where he wisely suggests that each generation interprets the music to suit the style of that era. No one really knows how Bach played baroque music, and no one can claim to be authentic to a time period that has long since passed away. "The musical spirit of Bach transcends all narrow limitations of period, and the artist of today who truly enters into this spirit will play Bach as he should be played, and will play Bach better because he will play him in the interpretative spirit of our own generation, not that of 1720." He deplores the blind upholders of "tradition" and insists that the violinist must form his own style, not just copy that of another.
On the famous shoulder-rest controversy, Auer comes down strictly on the "no-shoulder-rest" school claiming that it makes the player lose a third of the whole body of tone. One look at a picture of Auer playing the violin and you can see why his physique is suited to no-shoulder-rest. He has no neck, a protruding chin, and a squat frame upon which he can rest the violin on his chest, with relatively short arms, so he can hold the instrument directly in front of him. He also insists that you hold the violin as high as possible, especially when playing on the G string. You can see the results with Jascha Heifetz, who holds his violin up high and uses no shoulder rest. Of course, men of those days had padded shoulders on their suits and tuxedos, so the violin fit right up there.
This book is of interest in learning about violin pedagogy as taught in the Russian conservatories at the turn of the last century. And has valuable tips and technical aids. However, it does not substitute for a good teacher. And Auer would wholeheartedly agree, especially for beginners: "There is no instrument whose absolute mastery at a later period presupposes such meticulous care and exactitude in the initial stages of study as does the violin."
Leopold Auer - His mastery in few and simple words.......2003-01-05
Auer's book is a gem. The old violin Maestro describes in few and simple words the intricate and complex state of mind and abilities of the serious violinist. The book is NOT, I repeat NOT intended as a violin technique textbook. The book is directed, primarily, to violin teachers whom are responsible and concious of the fact that they are responsible for the correct development of the upcoming violinist. For those who so wrongly bashed the book for its prozaic content; learn to read between the lines. I give this book 4 stars!
Amazing resource.......2002-02-13
I must say that Mr Auer is one of the supream violinists of our century. Disregarding his amazing student track record, he is an amazing teacher who's methods are still prized today. Above my commentary there are several reviews that bash the book. In no way did Mr. Auer ever intend this book to be for a begginer. His sole objective in writting this book was to set in words what he had taught his entire life. This book was a great help in answering some of my techincal problems that are never talked about. If you are a violinist, this book is a neccesity. It's content is spectacular and well disserves a 5 star rating.
Overrated.......2001-07-19
When Auer is mentioned, you usually hear about him primarily in terms of who his students and teachers were. Heifetz, Galamian and Joachim come to mind. But I didn't find the book very useful. First off, it's a little skinny. Then the style is heavy turn-of-the-century egotist. It's very short on specifics. The only thing he really mentions that kind of turned my head is fingered-octaves. (He's definitely not appealing to beginners, is he?) Most of the rest reads like a pep talk and not the best, at that. If you want a quality read from the past get the Baillot book instead, where the discussions on bowing are much better, and replete with details and examples.
Excellent resource for teachers and more advanced student.......2001-05-25
I find this book invaluable as a resource for serious violin students and teachers. Leopold Auer elaborates a lot of insights and perspectives on better techniques to play the violin. This book is not merely about performing certain violin techniques, but also about the logic behind better ways of executing them.
I would agree, however, that this book is not for beginner level violin students. Auer does say that correct foundation should be built since the early stage, but many of the explanations are beyond the reach of those beginner who can't even produce the techniques way too difficult for their stage; say, vibrato, double-stops, spiccato, etc. However, this is a good resource for violin teachers to lay correct foundation step by step following the progress of their students. Also, this is a good book for more advanced students as a comparative reference on how well they have understood the techniques, at least as another perspective.
Overall, this book is highly recommended for serious students and teachers of violin.

Book Description
The Mabuse phenomenon is recognized as an icon of horror in Germany as Frankenstein and Dracula are in the United States. This work is a study of the 12 motion pictures and five books (and some secondary films) that make up the eight decades of adventures of master criminal Mabuse, created by author Norbert Jacques in the best-selling 1922 German novel and brought to the screen by master filmmaker Fritz Lang in the same year.
Both on screen and off, the story of Dr. Mabuse is a story of love triangles and revenge, of murder, suicides, and suspicious deaths, of betrayals and paranoia, of fascism and tyranny, deceptions and conspiracies, mistaken identities, and transformation. This work, featuring much information never before published in English, provides an understanding of a modern mythology whose influence has pervaded popular culture even while the name Mabuse remains relatively unknown in the United States.
Customer Reviews:
MABUSE the german Horror-Icon.......2001-12-13
Mabuse is for the german-gothic cinema, what Frankenstein or Dracula are for the anglosaxon-movies: cult. This book reviews the 12 Mabusefilms and a few secondary films, which where inspired by the mad doctor. The interested reader finds chapters about Fritz Lang, Jess Franco or the producer Arthur Brauner. Like all books published by McFarland the top quality has a top price. I guess the book is mainly for filmstudents or fans of dr. Mabuse

Great Book.......2007-08-10
I got hooked on this book immediately. Finished it in 2 days. It's a book that you can relate to. The passion between Karin & Jacques was incredible. I want my own Jacques Dubois! I only wish it was longer.
Buy it. Great to read while working out.
Romance..............2007-08-05
Leslie Esdaile took us on a wild journey of lust and love in her novel "Take Me There". It is a great romantic novel about a woman in her search for love. Her novel also shows a very real economic side of the world that many travelers or tourist fail to see. She brings her main characater, Karin, to life as she embraces the things she sees. A great romance story indeed.
Thanks Leslie!!!!
Hot! Hot!! Hot!!!.......2007-06-19
This is my 1st book by Leslie Esdaile and I am hooked. The chemistry between the main characters, Karin and J.B. is mind blowing. A must read. Can't wait to read her others.
I would have given it 9 stars!.......2007-04-30
Here I go again. I just wrote a review for 'Sister Got Game' by this amazing, Philly author. I didn't think 'Chick-Lit' writing could get any better and Leslie has done it again and raised the bar. I love everything about her books and 'Take Me There' did not disappoint. I wanted to fly to Saint Lucia tomorrow! Reading this book made me want to find my own true love and take the chance on love again. I am a fan for life!!
Sexy & Sweet Romance.......2007-04-17
"Take me There" was an exciting, funny, spirtual and sensuous romance. It was really good. I enjoyed all the characters of the story. I thought JB was hot, and sexy. And that Karin, was honest, sweet and very loyal. This was another good read by Mrs. Esdaile-Banks. The only thing bad about it, as with all of her other romances...it just ended way too soon!

An Important Read For any Modern Rock Fan.......2002-04-06
This highly entertaining book captures not only the spirit of one of the most influential rock bands of the 1990's, but also gives an insightful look into the emotional conflict among the band members. Intelligently written by one who has had close, personal contact with the group from their emergence on the musical scene.
A better place to play.......2002-02-13
This book is so trashy! I loved it! It was written by a good friend of the band, so you KNOW he's not totally honest, but it's still an exemplary biography of a wonderful band. The two Gallagher brothers are arrogant beyond belief, and their characterizations make "Take Me There" all the more fascinating. I particularly liked the stories of Evan Dando, their celebrity tag-along, as well as Noel's admissions of which songs he ripped off. Overall, this book serves as a fine introduction to a band who CLEARLY think they're better than they are (which is admittedly great anyhow!).
Definitive Story of Giants.......2000-07-30
At last a book about Oasis where the author knows what he's talking about! Paul Mathurs has been with the band from the start and they trust him which lays the solid foundation for the best book about Oasis to date.
This book is a must for anyone interested in Oasis and highly recommended for anyone who merely has a passing interest. It charts the band from their beginning to the release of Be Here Now (the interesting years!). It is a thorough and amusing account of the band's rise to fame and the downners along the way, especially with some of the tales form America.
Mathurs writes with a knowing, chatty and humourous edge which makes this book extremely addictive and you will no doubt be shocked and amazed by some of the antics covered! The sections where Robbie Williams pops up are simply unbelievable considering recent events. The constant banter of the Gallaghers highlighted in the book is great for the comic element and the comments on the bands music (always the most important thing with Oasis) are honest and truly meant.
A great read with highlights in every chapter. Buy it.
The complete story of their rise to where they are now........1998-12-30
I had the cd version of this book, and it was excelent. It gave the most in depth information I have ever seen of them. Also, it was approved by oasis so we know it's official. A MUST have for anyone who wants to know the true oasis.
A truly in-depth account of Oasis.......1998-07-15
This book will definitely grab your attention if you're an Oasis fan. Fanatics will love the great color photos. Even if you don't like the band, the stories (following Noel and Liam's exploits from Oasis's conception to mid-1996) will provoke astonishment, laughter, and intrigue. The background information on everything from the development of the songs to the interband relationships are highly interesting. Along Oasis's monumental rise, the brothers share their strange and expected encounters with friends like Paul McCartney, Evan Dando, John McEnroe, Ringo Starr, Micheal Hutchence, Bono, Lars Ulrich and others. My favorite part is when Liam gets into a argument with a grunge fan at Oasis's first New York show who tells Liam he'll "never amount to anything".

Precise and exact compilation and overveiw of games!.......2004-01-06
Just what the sport needed at the time of its publication the "GREAT BOOK OF DOMINO GAMES" is pretty much all good as a thing to anyone who might try it. It acheives a decent five stars by effectively making its mark as for what it is. I was looking for a bigger sized complete exposition of the sport of domino (to be honest) when I first read the GBODG but still was quite pleased with the outcome of reading it. I was so inspired that I later went on to write and publish a book myself - so my hat is really off to you Ms. Kelley! A good first choice for domino studying!
GREAT RESEARCH.......2001-05-02
I want to congratulate Ms. Kelley for an outstanding research about the variations of this pastime. Very well written for a descriptive book about the generalities of each variation. I really like to contact Ms. Kelley in order to share some thoughts. My emails are: gtejeira@panamacom.com gtejeira66@yahoo.com
Sincerely,

What fun! What an eye-opener! Definitely buy!.......2000-08-12
This is a wonderful book that really introduced us to a lot of great evenings in our house. It has a wide variety of games for double six sets and double nine sets, and any number of players. The games we've played have been enjoyable for the adults as well as for the children, and many of the games have even helped our daughter's math skills - - a game such as muggins, where you try to make the pips on the open ends add to multiples of 5. There are old stand by's here, as well as games that have been newly invented. At a price like this, for all the fun we've had, well, it's tough to find a better, more enjoyable deal.
This "Great Book" leads to great family entertainment........1999-08-13
For generations, folks in my family have played various domino games, though I don't recall ever seeing a set of written rules. I'm delighted that I found the rules to these games and scores of others in Jennifer Kelley's "Great Book of Domino Games." From domino solitaire to versions involving eight or more players, the games are all here -- and so is plenty of five-star fun for friends and family, including kids who develop math skills as they become accomplished players. This superb little book is on my list for birthday gifts.

For many of us, the single biggest financial transaction is buying a house. Even more significant than the hefty down payment we fork over is the 15- to 30-year mortgage that needs feeding every month. If you have this much at stake, a little knowledge can go a long way, which is where Eric Tyson and Ray Brown come in. In Mortgages for Dummies, Tyson and Brown (who also wrote Home Buying for Dummies and House Selling for Dummies) provide a comprehensive introduction for anyone who is contemplating a mortgage. The book tells you how to evaluate your creditworthiness, determine your borrowing power, and shop for a lender, as well as covering the various types of loans. The authors also devote a section to refinancing and discuss what you should consider when prepaying a loan. They include amortization and remaining-balance tables, and a useful glossary. Whether you're a first-time home buyer or are just looking to refinance, you'll find this a valuable, easy-to-use guide. --Harry C. Edwards

Good For Starters.......2007-05-22
The book touches on the very basics of buying a home. Lots of industry terms defined - this solves a communication barrier to often seen in this industry. Often times, some lenders forget to check the literacy of there clients and breeze through the whole process without defining some key terms. With this book, loan officers/brokers/agents and clients are on the same page.
First time buyers who read this book will feel a little more confident, especially with reading articles and books pertaining to buying/investing in a home.
Mortgages For Dummies, 2nd Edition.......2007-05-18
Very well written... useful not only for mortgage shoppers but also for professionals working in fields related to Financial Services!
Saved me a fortune!!!!!!.......2007-05-01
This book saved me about $22,000 when I purchased my house. It prepared me to know what to look for and what to ask for when searching for a mortgage! I had purchased the home buying for dummies book and while reading that I learned I needed to know so much more about the financing aspect. Since it was my first home purchase I was clueless. This book walked me through and helped me discover what my personal needs were. I found my dream house, a perfect fit mortgage, and closed all in 2 weeks. AMAZING!
very little substance.......2007-04-29
As a first-time homebuyer, I was looking for some in-depth knowledge of mortgages. This wasn't it. It gave a very broad overview and told me very little that I didn't already know. It is fine for the true dummies out there.
Loan Officer Info.......2007-04-04
This book was wonderful to read even though it is geared toward the person buying a mortgage, and I am a loan officer, that sells the mortgage. It had numerous terms spelled out so they could be easily understood. It marked off warning signs of things to stay away from. I feel this book will be in my desk for use constantly.
