Book Description

A plethora of patterns and palettes!

This hardworking reference book is the second volume in Rockport's Pattern and Palette series. Like the first, it is an invaluable tool for art directors, designers, and students working in the fashion, product, and graphic design fields, as well as anyone in the business of visual communication.

With close to 1,000 new patterns, Pattern and Palette Sourcebook 2 is a desktop library of colors and patterns that address the professional's needs in working with harmonies and contrasts. Divided into six unique style sections, the book provides readers with fifteen appropriate colors for each section, which are then incorporated into twenty-five different patterns shown in six or eight color variations each. This enables readers to see the dramatic effect colors have in design and helps them understand how to use color effectively. The book also demonstrates ways of creating designs that are distinctly unique from one another yet hold together in a group.

Also included is an interactive CD ROM that contains the patterns featured. Users can choose patterns, experiment with colors, and print out a sample of the patterns for reference.

3 out of 5 stars The CD is a disappointment.......2007-04-10

I suppose I should have read the description more carefully. The CD doesn't have the pattern files. It is only a program allowing you to adjust the colors. I was really looking forward to having Illustrator files of the patterns.

On the up side the patterns do inspire and the palettes are wonderful.

1 out of 5 stars Wasted Purchase.......2006-04-26

I have to share the same sentiments with a few of the other reviewers. Typically, when a CD-ROM comes with a book of this nature, one would expect the visual content (in this case the patterns displayed in this book) to be available on the disc itself. Not the case here, which I thought was a bit deceiving. It would have been much smarter (and more practical for the end user) for the book author to have provided the patterns as EPS files for use in a vector based software application such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. Otherwise what good is it to look at these patterns when you can't easily recreate them?

1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2005-11-13

First of all the content on the CD is not resuable in anyway. It comes with a semi-functional interactive CD that will allow you to print patterns but they are all locked Flash files so you can not use them in illustrator or in any other program.

The book itself is page after page of repeated patterns with slight color adjustment. The patterns are uninspired and dated. I would not recommend this book to anyone if I could give it negative stars i would.

5 out of 5 stars Georgeous patterns you can change color and printout.......2005-11-10

This book is filled with beautiful and diverse patters, some really modern and clean, others more ornate and traditional. The best part is the CD lets you change the colors in the patterns and then print them out for you to use. It's great for everything from professional design jobs to scrapbooking and personal projects.

1 out of 5 stars unhelpful book..........2005-09-24

I bought this book because i thought i can use the pattern in the cd provided, but unfortunately you cant use any of them, they saved it as flash animation format. Unlike the other book I have purchased "the complete pattern library" where you can use any pattern in the book and even change the colors of them.

    5 out of 5 stars A Big Dipper.......2007-07-04

I have to admit, I don't like Marvel comics. Having spent a good twenty years reading comics, I'm a DC man through and through. However, I'm a sucker for the sort of books that entertains and engages a dipper - the reader who has a couple of minutes to spare and nothing more. When you don't have time to consume a chapter of your latest book or thumb through a comic, few things match up to the potential of this book. Riffle the pages and read about a classic hero or villain, alive or dead; or a few alien races; or a nice piece of super-equipment; or details of an expansive and well-equipped headquarters. Yes, it's twenty years out of date and yes, it's in black-and-white; but the dollar worth of this book when compared to the hours, days, weeks... years of pleasure I'll get out of it - it's massive value for money. The only downside for me... those snatched minutes I wanted to fill can sometimes turn into hours if I get caught up in an interesting thread of interlinked heroes... Ah well.

    5 out of 5 stars marvel goodness.......2007-05-16

this book is very good because it covers almost every character in the marvel universe character.even if it is a little dated it still stands as a true sourse to the matvel characters.the best part about the book is that in detail it describe the background and powers. i highly recommend this book!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A great gift for boys........2007-01-17

I bought this for my 9-year old son, and he hasn't put it down for a week. I think he will read it cover-to-cover. All black and white, with simple drawings and great descriptions. I think it will be a great inspiration for him to invent his own characters.

5 out of 5 stars Comic Styled Encyclopedia for the first 20-years of Marvel.......2006-03-28

    About the Book:
For those of you planning to buy something for a comic book fan, the "Marvel Essentials" series are black & white trade paper back (tpb) reprints of what are considered popular and/or important Marvel Comics. They are printed on lightweight paper, and are designed to bring comics that may be hard to find back to new and old comic book fans. This particular tpb reprints a series of 15 comics that were originally released in 1982, 21-years after the first Marvel comic (Fantastic Four #1). Another (more detailed) version, called the "Deluxe Handbook" was released in the mid 1980s, and will be reprinted in a series of 3 tpbs this year.

The series covers the major people, places, and things that make up the first 20-years of the "shared" Marvel Universe where Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, etc. live. The black & white reprint is designed to keep size and costs down.

    Good Features:
    - Easy to store (book format)
    - Easy to read the text (the lettering is crisp and clear)
    - Easy to find information and flip around because entries are alphabetically arranged
    - Entire 15 comic run in one book
    - Detailed reference information w/ first appearance of people / places / things
    - Good artwork (even in black & white)

    Common Complaints
    - Original comics can still be found for cheap
    - Color is important, and not present in this book
    - Information is dated
    - The more complete "Deluxe Handbook" tpb 3-book series will be released in 2006

    General Thoughts:
I actually own about 11 of the original 15 comics from this series. It has taken me over 6-years to find them in cheap quarter bins at comic shows, but I know the color originals from this series are easy to find. I plan on getting rid of my originals, because I never really found myself reading the originals. I filed them away with the rest of my regular comic collection, which isn't really the point with this particular series. However, since tpbs, like the Essentials series, easily can be carried on a bus or plane, I tend to really enjoy reading them while commuting and traveling. And since this book is the ideal size for sitting on a proper bookshelf, I've found that unlike the originals, I'll pull it off the shelf when I'm curious about a comic person, place, or thing.

Do keep in might that the larger and more complete Deluxe Handbook will be released in 3 black & white volumes later in 2006. I plan on purchasing that series as well, but some people might want to wait to only keep and read that series.

4 out of 5 stars The Essential Handbook to the Marvel Universe Vol. 1..........2006-03-02

If you grew up in the eighties and you read Marvel Comics, then you may remember this series. This was the series to get and collect back then as you could get the skinny on all the characters and maps to all their headquarters and hidden cities. The fact that they have reprinted the original 15 issue run in one essentials edition is fantastic and you get it all here. The only reason this review isn't 5 stars is that the information is over twenty-three years old.

This book is great for general knowledge of the Marvel Universe, finding out who the characters are (in a general way...) and giving you all fifteen issues for a little over a dollar an issue. If you play role playing games based in the Marvel Universe (either TSR's original Marvel, the Saga system or the new Diceless system) than this book is a must as it not only provides an unparalleled source of information for you the buyer, but for your players in your game as well.

    Book Description

You might think an internationally renowned word expert like Richard Lederer would be strait-laced. Serious. Professional. Think again. This wordmaster with more than twenty acclaimed books to his name turns out to have a penchant for off-color wordplay, as evidenced in this quirky, funny volume. Lederer presents hilarious, ingenious, and slightly naughty puns, jokes, limericks, songs, and other verbal silliness. This book of 'good, clean dirty fun' will delight wordhounds, punsters, bachelor-party goers, and others who like a clever grown-up joke every now and then. After all, a dirty mind is a terrible thing to waste. Q: What does a man have in his pants that you can also find on a pool table? A: Pockets Have you heard about the incompatible couple? He had no income, and she wasn't pattable. The four stages of a couple's sex life: Under 35: Tri-weekly 35-45: Try weekly 45-55: Try weakly 55 and over: Try, try, try.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Only weakness: you've probably heard half of the stuff in here before.......2007-02-26

Let's be honest: Lederer is the man when it comes to wordplay jokes, has been for years. That said, I'm not sure why this book caught me by surprise -- after all, dirty puns are puns too, however awful they are.

I'd be willing to wager at least half of the items in this book have passed through your email inbox at one time or another. The book is sillier than it is sexy, and that's just fine.

    5 out of 5 stars Well Done!.......2007-01-07

Excellent book arrived in a timely fashion. A pleasure to do business with.

4 out of 5 stars Dirty Jokes for the Thinking Person.......2006-03-23

The author notes in the beginning that there are off color jokes that take their humor from a more refined perspective -- puns, plays on words, etc. The book holds true to its promise. This is not the kind of book that you read all at onece, but sample a bit at a time -- maybe something to have handy . . . in the bathroom.

4 out of 5 stars Simply Sinfully Punny.......2004-02-20

I had lots of fun with this book. Mr. Lederer, I blame you for the lost hours of sleep! :-) There are parts of the book that I wouldn't want kids to see, but it's mostly harmless. My favourite is the poem where the last line of each stanza is missing a word which based on the rhyme would be quite risque, but it's a riot when you see what happens at the beginning of the next stanza.

Oh, speaking of risque, if I understand this correctly, this book was previously known as Nothing Risque, Nothing Gained. So if you already have that one, you don't need this one. On the other hand, if you'd been looking for it, this is your chance to get it.

        Book Description

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, formula-driven Hollywood blockbusters and bottom-line accounting seem to dominate the film world. In times like these can "the love of cinema" still flourish? This book shows that contemporary cinema--from Tawian and Iran to Brazil and the Baltic states--is, in fact, stunningly varied and rich. As Jonathan Rosenbaum and Adrian Martin show in this wide-ranging look at World Cinema, directors like Abbas Kiarostami, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Tsai Ming-liang are now making extraordinary films equal to the great classics, previously unrecognized works from the past are being discovered, and new boundaries for the genre are being explored. Those who follow and share such work, as contributors from around the world demonstrate in these pages, are forming new communities that enable significant exchange between cultures at a time when other forces seem bent on keeping them isolated. Movie Mutations pronounces the art form alive, well, and continuing to developing in new and exciting directions.

            Product Description

This superb fingerpicking reference book features 101 authentic, traditional blues fingerstyle licks for guitar. The goldmine of licks is divided into the following categories: Four-beat licks; Eight-beat licks; Introductions and turnarounds. The licks are written in both standard notation and guitar tablature, and recorded at a moderate speed on the companion CD. This is not a method book for beginners, but a nice collection of licks for guitarists who have some fingerstyle ability and want to do some exploring. Another GREAT guitar book from Red Dog Music Books.

            Book Description

From Buddy Holly and the Crickets to the Flatlanders, Terry Allen, and Natalie Maines, Lubbock, Texas, has produced songwriters, musicians, and artists as prolifically as cotton, conservatives, and windstorms. While nobody questions where the conservatives come from in a city that a recent nonpartisan study ranked as America's second most conservative, many people wonder why Lubbock is such fertile ground for creative spirits who want to expand the boundaries of thought in music and art. Is it just that "there's nothing else to do," as some have suggested, or is there something in the character of Lubbock that encourages creativity as much as conservatism?

In this book, Christopher Oglesby interviews twenty-five musicians and artists with ties to Lubbock to discover what it is about this community and West Texas in general that feeds the creative spirit. Their answers are revealing. Some speak of the need to rebel against conventional attitudes that threaten to limit their horizons. Others, such as Joe Ely, praise the freedom of mind they find on the wide open plains. "There is this empty desolation that I could fill if I picked up a pen and wrote, or picked up a guitar and played," he says. Still others express skepticism about how much Lubbock as a place contributes to the success of its musicians. Jimmie Dale Gilmore says, "I think there is a large measure of this Lubbock phenomenon that is just luck, and that is the part that you cannot explain."

As a whole, the interviews create a portrait not only of Lubbock's musicians and artists, but also of the musical community that has sustained them, including venues such as the legendary Cotton Club and the original Stubb's Barbecue. This kaleidoscopic portrait of the West Texas music scene gets to the heart of what it takes to create art in an isolated, often inhospitable environment. As Oglesby says, "Necessity is the mother of creation. Lubbock needed beauty, poetry, humor, and it needed to get up and shake its communal ass a bit or go mad from loneliness and boredom; so Lubbock created the amazing likes of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Joe Ely."

            4 out of 5 stars Vortex.......2006-10-27

If you subscribe to the idea that certain areas of the world are natural conduits to creativity (and they're often the most UNLIKELY places on Earth), this book will definitely reinforce that notion. As a life-long Texan, I had no idea of the breadth of artistry that's emerged from the vast, desolate, seemingly limitless landscape that is Lubbock, Texas. Sure, I'd heard of Buddy Holly, Joe Ely, and the Flatlanders--what serious music lover in Texas or around the world hadn't? But to learn about this fountain of artists who may not be as well known yet have been just as prolific and, more importantly, just as influential--that was an eye-opener. It'll be one for you, too. If you love Texas music, buy this book. If you love music in general, or if you want an insight into the how the creative process is molded by a landscape, an environment, an ideal--buy this book. You'll come away informed, sated, but more importantly, curious. And it will open up a whole new avenue of inquiry for you. It did for me.

2 out of 5 stars Iým embarrassed for MENSA.......2004-04-05

The book needed better proofreading, Seriously, what test has duplicate questions (from memory, it was test 3 questions 3 and 7 are identical)? I specifically looked up this website to write this review and I was comforted by the fact someone else beat me to it. Other answers are just plain wrong. You would think, these people are obliviously smarter than me, I must be wrong! But know the answers given in the back contradict the problems (cant work the problem backwards). I suggest someone at MENSA should attempt to work through potential books with their names on it before having the books published. The title is misleading, mostly the back is just an answer key, I rarely seen more than a 2 word explaination of a problem. The book How To Excel At IQ Tests does not help you do anything of the sort. How are you to excel without explaination of answers or even tips?

2 out of 5 stars Not for preparing Mensa IQ test.......2003-03-11

I had almost passed the Mensa test in the past, and I wanted to learn tricks for becoming faster and finally pass it. But this book is bad for me, the title is misleading. Here it's mostly about numerical and verbal problems, while the real Mensa test contains neither (questions are instead mostly like "which picture completes the serie?").
It might be helpful for preparing other tests, though.

5 out of 5 stars Great first-hand account into ib.......2007-09-21

This book was an entertaining way to look into the world of ib. After being in ib for quite a while and hearing about this book left and right, I finally had the time to pick it up and read through it. It is right on the money with each of the topics. This book is a must read for anyone thinking of working in investment banking or Wall Street in general.

4 out of 5 stars It's "Business" for Excel Monkeys.......2007-08-24

The numerous other reviewers have already done this work by Rolfe and Troob justice with their detailed and colorful comments and elaborations. So I'll make mine short -- JUST DO IT. Definitely read this book if you are in the trade. It's entertaining and educational. Plus, it makes a cross-country business trip plane ride go much faster.

4 out of 5 stars Raw but Intelligent.......2007-07-10

This is the most "unveiling" book about associate life in investment banking (in equities at least) I've come across and I think holds its own on a Liar's Poker level. It's not low level humor, just highly witty and raw; and well written. You will laugh at loud, yes even you stoic business-types.

If you're thinking about I-banking, I'd recommend this, especially if you believe the myth of cigars, caviar and high-life escapades. MB, with some colorful descriptions, tells it like it is.

I agree with the counter claims made by some bankers in the comments section, and believe MB shouldn't discourage anyone. Any high level professional has to pay dues, the associate years at a bank is analogous to the residency years of a surgeon. Yes you're going to get destroyed, but that's the rite of passage.

Good luck to all the eager bankers out there. Read and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, funny, and useful.......2007-06-19

I finished this book the second time I picked it up because it is absolutely hilarious. A great book, with very funny moments. Also this book gives a great insight into the kind of activities bankers do at the associate level. Great book!!

              5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious.......2007-04-15

I work at an investment bank but I'm not a banker. I just bought this book on a friends recommendation and I must say this read is hilarious. I read it during my commute to work and the other day I just could not stop laughing in the bus. I had tears in my eyes. I had to put the book down before someone noticed and thought I was crazy.
