I'm not as pleased with this book as I thought I would be. The projects are unusual, quick to do, but not the type of projects I prefer. I rated it low because of the slow arrival. I was notified of shipping on 3/14, but it wasn't delivered until today, 4/11. All other items ordered through Amazon arrived on time, or much sooner than expected. This is the only time I have been dissatisfied with the service.

Book Description

The colorful and stylized kimono--the national garment of Japan--expresses not only Japanese aesthetic sensibilities but the soul of Japan as well. In this beautifully written and lavishly illustrated book, Liza Dalby, author of the highly acclaimed Geisha and Tale of Murasaki, traces the history of kimono--its uses, aesthetics, and social meanings--to explore Japanese culture. Drawing on a variety of period texts including 17thcentury kimono pattern books, Dalby vividly recreates kimono and those who wore them through the centuries. She discusses the development of the kimono robe from its Chinese origins two thousand years ago to its assimilation as the national dress of Japan. An engaging mix of fashion history and social anthropology, this lively and scholarly book demonstrates in a new way how clothing can illuminate our understanding of culture.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A really worthwhile book on kimono.......2007-02-24

This book is a classic. It doesn't have many color pictures, but that doesn't seem to matter. The author discusses kimono in terms of how kimono are worn and what tiny differences in the details of wearing mean in social context. That's what I find fascinating. Of course she also covers the history of kimono. She includes many small black-and-white line illustrations that demonstrate her points very well.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book on the History of Kimono.......2006-03-21

This is a very good guide to the history of the kimono and its importance in Japanese society. Perhaps its only fault is that it doesn't have a huge amount of pictures and those pictures that it does have are largely in black and white.

5 out of 5 stars Kimono seen from the eyes of a non Japanese.......2005-10-27

An outstanding book, excellent for reference and research.A very well detailed research on colors and seasons in the Heian Period,
Designs, colors and symbols all had a particular reason for being used. You just did not use any color for any day of the year.Ms.Dalby did an exquisite job.

5 out of 5 stars More to the Kimono than meets the eye.......2004-06-29

The kimono is the national dress of Japan and is instantly recognisable as Japanese wherever you see it. However, the kimono that we see today is essentially the end of a long evolution of dress over a thousand years and what is worn now is essentially a fossilised costume.

This book gives you an illuminating look at the history of the kimono in Japan - how even the word "kimono" didn't exist before last century, when the Japanese became aware that there were "other" forms of dress. We are also given insights into the dress of the lower class and rural people of Japan. They are often forgotten in kimono discussion, yet they developed a dress style that was both practical and indigenous, though it is dying in the modern age. There is even an extensive section devoted to the aristocratic 10th century kimono styles and colour combinations.

Lastly this book gives you insight into how the modern kimono is worn. There is a wealth of meaning in dress design and how it is worn that mostly passes non-Japanese by and for a kimono to be worn with style requires a lot of social knowledge that not many other books will spell out for you like this.

This book is highly recommended if you have an interest in Japanese costume, history or fabrics. It gives a fascinating account of how dress mirrors history and social changes. However, if you are looking for lots of colour photos of kimono and their designs this book will probably disappoint you as all the illustrations are in black and white.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2003-05-02

A comprehensive history of kimono past and present, this book is so full of information that it's hard to summarize. The author covers not only "familiar" - i.e., formal - kimono, but also work clothes, folk clothing, and the modest beauty of stripes and ikat. Illustrations throughout the book are well annotated and informative.

My two favorite chapters are those on kimono in the Heian (9th-11th centuries) and Genroku (1688-1704) periods, with their wealth of history and beauty. The chapter on the Heian era covers, among other things, seasonal color combinations, with color depictions of how the layers would look. The Genroku chapter covers kosode, with commented (black and white) illustrations from pattern books of the time.

For those interested in wearing modern kimono, the chapter "The Structure of Kimono" includes information on several different aspects of what a kimono, obi and their accessories can mean according to how they're worn. For instance, how the V-shape formed by the collar differs according to age, or what an obijime placed slightly lower than usual can signify. It also includes charts on kimono formality (a wonderful resource) and descriptions - as always, accompanied by illustrations - of the different kimono and obi types.

        Book Description

Fifteen-year-old Jeremy Duncan is bored with school. His mom talks his ear off. His dad's jokes are lame on a world-class level. But while Jeremy may believe much of his life is a big yawn, parent and teen readers of the comics pages from more than 1,000 different newspapers eagerly embrace the real-life humor and clever stories of Zits every day.Zits: Super-Sized marks the third anxiously awaited treasury of the hilarious trials and tribulations of Jeremy and a dynamic cast of characters that includes girlfriend Sara, best-friends Hector and Pierce, and parents Connie and Walt. The strip is such a funny pages staple that it's hard to believe it was only six years ago that creators Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman were pondering whether Zits was the right name for their soon-to-debut strip. Charles Schulz told Borgman that it was "the worst name for a comic strip since Peanuts." It only stands to reason that the strip would go on to Peanuts-like notoriety. Today, it's impossible to imagine that the humorous, edgy strip could be known by any other name. Complete with brilliant four-color illustrations, Zits: Super-Sized chronicles more than two years' worth of the wildly popular strip that's twice been honored with the award for Best Newspaper Comic Strip by the National Cartoonists Society.

5 out of 5 stars Zits Supersized is Supersize Fun.......2006-11-04

Love this! The teen of our household as well as ourselves see the real life humor of this treasury!

4 out of 5 stars Not the Best, But Still Good.......2006-09-27

This collection pales in comparison to the two earlier Zits' treasuries, and some of the jokes in this collection are duplicates of earlier strips with only minor changes. The Richandamy character has gotten extremely tired at this point in the strip, and Pierce isn't the most engaging of supporting characters.

As ever though, the strip hits close to home with its depiction of teen/parent relationships, and the biggest laughs come from Jeremy's mother's attempts to bond with her son.

Worth a read, but maybe not a reread.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better Zits collections.......2006-03-06

There are multiple problems with the Zits series, mainly pertaining to Jeremy's mother (I mentioned this in my review of Random Zits) but this edition gets it pretty well. However, both Big Honkin' Zits and Random Zits were better in terms of plot. Regardless, there are some funny strips here.

It has always been blatantly obvious that the situations in the strip were inspired by real teenagers somewhere, and here it doesn't get any better. Sadly, this treasury probably has the highest number of undoubtedly real situations. Despite that, there is not a total absence of plot. Another reviewer said that the buddies come into their own more this time. This is very true- Hector has some pretty awesome comebacks here (yes, even better than his ones during the Amber incident in the last book) and Pierce is introduced. Pierce would be better developed later, but I like to think of this book as the Last Stand of Tim, the one where quiet Tim Olsen left the scene in favor of Pierce for a while.

Anyway, not much else to say. Out of the four currently out (haven't gotten Crack of Noon yet), probably the third best. Not a good introduction like Big Honking Zits, or with the sheer comedic value of Random Zits, but a welcome addition to your collection.

"Kudos to Judy"...A "steller job"??? Of what? Typing up OTHER people's creativity and getting paid for it? I gave no permission, nor did any friend I've asked, to be reproduced in any of her books. I'm lucky, Judy hasn't seen me for years. She's using old jokes for me. But, I see new, up and coming comics, who haven't had their HBO special or even a shot on "Premiam Blend" yet before she's burning their jokes on the rubber chicken circuit. AND, she's having book signings? Who's name is she signing? Singers have to pay royalties. Please people, buy the books and CD's of the comics you like, then do their best jokes. At least, you'll be paying the right person commission. Diane Nichols

A bunch of one-liners from various comedians. Some comedians seem to be heavily favored; some of them are good, and some are not. Definitely some good comedy. The book was really marked down when I bought it, so I think it was a good buy.

This book is great for when you want a laugh and a light read. Lots of jokes by well-known comics and a few that I haven't heard of. The jokes are also organized by topic, so if you ever need something for an ocassion to jot down in a card or if you have to speak before a group, it really comes in handy.

The funniest stuff from the funniest folks, sure to cause episodes of incontinence and milk through the nose the world over.

Brown does an excellent job of editing and the comics do a great job of doing what they do best (ie being funny)

Lanzmann's put together his own 'triumph of the will" here. He could teach Goebbels a thing or two on propaganda or seriously cutting stories/tape together to fit his anti-Polish hate film, not documentary. This whole book is filled with storiesthat have been super-embellished from the originals. Sensationalizing sells. Lanzman does not care who he defames in this hate book; very, very upsetting - don't bother.

I am a Cinema major at San Francisco State University, and one of the classes I'm in right now is "Film and the Holocaust." We watched Shoah in that class, and the final exam is based solely on that film. This book, which is a transcript of the entire film, word-for-word, is a CRUCIAL study aid for me. I don't know what I would have done without it. Thank you Claude Lanzmann for making this book availible to the public!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Valuable reference to a fascinating historically accurate movie.......2005-12-29

Interesting how the anti-semitic reviews posted below were unsigned. Shoah does not diminish the suffering of the other victims of the Nazis. It focuses on the tragedy that befell the Jews of Nazi-occupied Europe because while not all victims of the Nazis were Jews, All Jews were victims. Don't be deceived by the intellectually bogus ramblings below. See the movie and use the text for reference.

1 out of 5 stars A Polish Jew, a Holocaust Survivor, Sets the Record Straight.......2001-07-04

Sigmund Gorson, a Polish Jew, has written an expose of the numerous historical inaccuracies in the film Shoah. Gorson's article can be found in the library of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT. Among other things, Gorson points out that: 1) Two million Polish Christians were also murdered by the German Nazis during the Holocaust, 2) The Warsaw Ghetto uprising had far more extensive supply of arms by the Polish underground than the token one-gun shown in the movie, 3) The scene where uniformed Polish soldiers shot Jewish women and children is a vicious lie, 4) Overall, more Christians than Jews perished in the hands of the German and Austrian Nazis, 5) True instances of Polish collaboration with the Germans against the Jews were very rare, and were punished by death by the Polish underground, etc. So for those who think that Shoah presents gospel truth, I would advise them to read Gorson.

5 out of 5 stars Why Abstract Paintings Look Like that.......2004-11-27

This is an excellent concise clear explanation of the links between modern art and modern music. Many of the early abstract painters were also musicians. They were searching for a way to express color especially in sound or sound in color. This book is a great overview of what they were trying to do. It is not so technical that a non-musician or non-artist would have trouble understanding it, but it provides a lot of food for thought, listening and looking.

4 out of 5 stars Synesthesia and the origin of abstract art.......2001-12-31

In a brief but satisfying small volume, the author describes the fascinating relationship between early modern music and the origin of nonobjective painting. From Claude Debussy's "juxtaposed fields of contrasting tone color", to Schoenberg's concepts of dissonance and polyphonal compositions, the essence of the synesthetic experience became incorporated into a new vision of art, championed best by Kandinsky : "colors and forms could have an intrinsic effect, independent of objects, and that like the tones in music they were capable of engendering reverberations in the mind and soul of the viewer". Well researched and supported by beautiful reproductions, The Sound of Painting compellingly relates an aspect of Modern Art History that is neglected in the "standard" art history tomes. The only weakness of the book is that the author tries (?for completeness) to discuss other aspects of music in painting of the late twentieth century, but it has little of the significance and intrigue of the early twentieth century story told in the first two thirds of the book. A great companion book with a focus on synesthesia, is Kevin Dann's, Bright Colors Falsely Seen.

              Book Description

For more than ten years, Roy Underhill has taught the techniques of traditional woodcraft, or 'how to start with a tree and an axe and make one thing after another until you have a house and everything in it.' Through his popular PBS series, The Woodwright's Shop, and his previous books, Roy has inspired millions—from professional craftspeople to armchair woodworkers—with his talent, knowledge, and enthusiasm.

Roy returns now with his fourth book, The Woodwright's Eclectic Workshop. It features step-by-step instructions for many projects featured on the television series in recent years, including such popular projects as the Adirondack chair, tavern table, folding ladder, rocking horse, lathe, and kayak. All projects are illustrated with photographs and measured drawings.

The book also includes colorful descriptions of what it was like to be a tradesperson who made a living by hand, working with the tools and methods Roy describes on television and in his books: carpenters, joiners, wheelwright, millwrights, chairmakers, and blacksmiths. As Roy puts it, he wants to examine 'the old paths in the way that they were originally taken: not as adventuresome recreations but a profession that put food on the table and clothes on the kids.'

If I were trapped on the proverbial desert island, there is no question which book I'd bring... because with Roy Underhill's book, to paraphrase the master himself: you begin with a tree and an ax and you end up with a house and everything in it. Nobody does it better in wood, and this is another fantastic and inspiring book, like his others. I bought this book for my husband. After it arrived, I skimmed through, and ended up reading the whole thing, cover-to-cover... Roy Underhill's writing style is so addicting, you can't put the books down. And if you are lucky enough to live in a place where trees grow, you MUST own this book... all of his books. We live in the desert... no trees here... but we are both so inspired by these ideas that we are movng to a place where trees grow. If you know anyone who loves working with wood, begin getting these books for that person. Get them all. Do it as soon as possible.

Betsy Sanders, a former vice president and general manager with the extraordinarily consumer-oriented Nordstrom department-store chain, believes that true success on the sales floor stems from dedicated leadership in the management ranks and a steadfast commitment to related ideals from those at the top on down. In Fabled Service: Ordinary Acts, Extraordinary Outcomes, Sanders outlines the fundamentals for others who would like to achieve the legendary customer-friendly status that is widely accorded her former employer. The outcome, she stresses, is service that is so effective that it actually influences the decisions of shoppers.

This book is by Betsy Sanders, VP and General Manager of NOrdstrom's Southern California Division . Betsy shares her secrets to legendary customer service --not theories-- but what works....7 chapters of this nicely sized volume 124 pages plus a good index cover what Fabled Service is and isn't and how to move from philosophy to practice. There's a bit of zen here as she encourages you to practice the small tings to be perfect on the large. Being of service is a journey -- as we all know...The book is illustrated with photos and some easy to the eye graphics. For example on page 40 -- there is a prescription for fabled service which includes two primary ingredients #1 Respect and Ingredient #2 Flexibility...she says there are no sweeter words than "I'll take care of that". It's everyone's job -- not just the 'customer service' dude or chix. Lots of things need to meld together to get the right outcome -- like the environoment, the technology and the message. Integrity and fabled service are intertwined too...nice chapter 7 on how to be a traditional or transformational leader and what makes a leader...A preface by Warren Bennis adds to the credibility of this tome. Surprisingly -- the words of wisdom are timeless -- even the Internet and social networking and email hasn't changed the importance of SERVICE......A good read -- might be kewl to leave it in the coffee room for people to glance at in between breaks!

              5 out of 5 stars Betsyýs Fables.......2003-10-10

Once a young lady offered her mother-in-law to a retail outlet that had a no questions policy on returns. In another better known case, a customer returned used tires to the legendary Nordstrom which accepted it politely though it had never ever sold a tire. Fables are born when excellence captures the imagination of the customers.

This book brings out what lies behind the secret of such excellence when it comes to customer service. Such service that becomes fabled comes straight from the heart of the employees. The challenge then is to hire those whose hearts are for whom they serve and to train and lead them into excellence of service delivery.

Through well structured illustrations from companies like SAS, Nordstrom, McDonald's, Wal-Mart, The Ritz Carlton, the message is driven straight to the heart -Make service everything your company is and does. This is accomplished through two sets of employees - those who serve the customers directly and those who serve these employees. Hiring for the right attitude and leading these men and women to excel is the "how" of the story.

The book mostly picks examples from retail, the philosophy and scope extends to all industries. After all, there is no business without a customer. Though all of us agree that the customer is the purpose of our business, at the top of our organization charts we never find the customer. The customer is conveniently forgotten in the organizations' most important document. Not at Nordstrom for example. Here the organization chart is an inverted pyramid with customers at the top. It takes a different mind set to accept such realities. In fact it not a state of the mind, but a matter of the heart.

Recommended for professionals working in today's "knowledge industries". Maybe they will gain some knowledge on what it means to serve customers!

              .
The book is pretty, nice graphics, good fonts, lots of white space, etc. I personally agree that good serice is a good thing. But the message is pretty simple and the focus is hammer, hammer, hammer... This is like a Tony Robbins publication with a micro focus.
              .
Here are the seven suggested "Commitments":
              1. To Make Service Everything Your Company Is and Does
              2. To Be of Service in ALL That You Do
              3. To Act On the Belief That You Are in Business to Serve Customers
              4. To Serve Those Who Serve the Customers
              5. To Design Every Part of Your Business With Service as the Desired Outcome
              6. To Be In Business to Serve Society
              7. To Create and Sustain the Vision

But these commitments simply don't work in all situations and all companies. The "service is good" idea has been twisted into a religion - and there's a lot of religion here - the pictures include Albert Schweitzer and Mother Theresa! How can I argue against them?

              Hopefully I won't be damned because I didn't give it 5 stars.

Fabled Service is solid proof of the importance of customer service supported by Sanders's experience with Nordstrom. Businesses strive for customer service, and Sanders provides useful and detailed explanations and strategies for how to attain the basic concept of excellent customer service. Fabled Service is as good as Michael Levine's Guerilla PR: Wired, which explains how to attain excellent public relations coverage in the modern age without busting the budget.
