Book Description
Responding to Art: Form, Content, & Context is designed to excite and interest students with minimal knowledge of art and limited confidence in responding to it. To this end, the book starts at the students' introductory level and sets out to stimulate their interest and active participation. From the onset,
Responding to Art integrates art and design forms that the students are already familiar with and have some interest in: including CD covers, magazine advertisements, fashion styles, websites, crafts, product design, and folk art. In addition, the book engages students and builds their confidence by incorporating into the opening chapter responses to art by introductory-level students like themselves. This sends an immediate message to the students that their own thoughts and feelings are valid, valued, and diverse. With expanded interest, confidence, and knowledge, students are prepared for more challenging art forms, information, and concepts.

A good start, though, not much use.......2007-05-14
I had previusly bought and read Ink, from the same author (book that I highly recomend for people new to tattoing like me) and I was thrill to receive this book, though, I must admit, at lest it gives you some structure to determine a bit closely what you want, but the collection itself is not as big as I would have liked, and most of them you can see them on any tattoo shop.
Worth re-buying.......2007-04-15
I loaned this book to a friend, and she kept it when she moved. It is worth re-purchasing because it gives some meaning to some of the designs out there. While not all of the descriptions are useful, and the drawings included are not at all what I would want permanently on me, I have used the explanations as a springboard for some of my more meaningful pieces. It's worth checking out if you want to know about more obscure designs.
not too much info.......2007-04-02
there is not much to this book a few pictures and mild reading rather informative yet not as much help as popup books would have been.
Great Symbology Resource.......2006-11-10
I picked up this book a while ago second hand on a college campus because of my interest in tattoos as well as symbology (apologies to Willam DaFoe). The book has given me some ideas for new ink as well as clarified some misconceptions about ancient Christian symbology.
There were a few connections the author made that seemed to be stretching it, but I would absolutely recommend this book!

Volume 17 of the complete works of America's most infamous cartoonist!
After many Eisner and Harvey comics awards, the Complete Crumb series comes to a close (at least in its current formatwe will continue to collect the entirety of Crumb's career in single-volume collections like Hup and Mystic Funnies, beginning in 2005). This 17th volume collects a creatively fertile period for Crumb, having given up the editorial reins of his own legendary Weirdo magazine, allowing Crumb to get back to the proverbial drawing board. Included are Crumb's contributions to Weirdo from this period, as well as work from Whole Earth Review, Zap Comix, Premiere magazine, as well as many other rare gems. This volume, as with all volumes, includes a new introduction by Crumb as well as a new cover. The Complete Crumb series leaves no stone unturned, publishing everything from Crumb's most well-known comics to little-seen commercial art and rarely-if-ever seen treasures from private collections and the artist's archives.

Good ...but not essential........2006-12-30
Buying this, and rating it, depends on your level of dedication to all things Crumb -- bear in mind, that at least half of the book is taken up by glossy art work, comic covers, private sketches, and a peppering of his wife's artwork.
To some this will be a plus -- to me , it is a minus point. Much as I love Crumb's cover art/sketches, I buy his work to read his misanthropic, hateful, resentful, self mocking, self deprecating STORIES, and not to browse at his coffee table art.
This is not to denigrate his artwork -- I am simply saying that the buyer has their priorities.
Having said that there are some startling stories included here -- "Memories" the first tale in the book is written around the theme of his own self loathing and uncontrollable, self mocking, hateful lust. It's classic Crumb, and a tale of his seeking out dysfucntional women to "seduce". Though that may be the wrong word when we observe Crumb's inadequate fumblings.
"I am Grateful" is a tale of all the things Crumb is grateful for in life, and , Harvey Pekar style, investigates his love of rare rare vinyl, his love of everyday pleasures such as reading a good book, and seeking out girls, usually unsucessfully.
"Cave Wimp" is the peak of the book -- it's set in the stone age, with a lead character clearly representing Crumb.
The lead character is an alienated intellectual, a weak pathetic, sexually obssessed, awkward figure, who is rejected by the rest of the tribe.
So, it has it's excellent , outstanding moments -- but for those of you not particularly interested in his ( albeit beautiful ) artwork -- it may be wise to check out other books first.
If you are a Crumb completist, well you sure won't have a thing to complain about here.
Memories are made of this!.......2005-10-09
This volume of The Complete Crumb reprints comics from 1988 to 1992. Highlights include the great "Cave Wimp" and the last "Mode O'Day" story. Really good stuff here, fans of Crumb should get this book.
Better and BETTER!!!.......2005-10-04
Every volume of this series is a treasure. I missed out on Weirdo when it first came out, so to have those stories together in a few volumes is fantastic.
Crumb's writing and artwork are phenominal in this volume. "Cave Wimp" and (sadly) the last published "Mode O'Day" story are great.
The real treat in this book is the parody of Omaha, the Cat Dancer. Entitled "Wichita, The Rat Dancer", Crumb gives a dead-on portrayal of the artwork and rambling, beyond-trivial dialog. Absolutely HILLARIOUS!!
Can't wait for the next volume. Will they have the guts to have the cover portraying one of Crumb's best stories, "When the N****** Take Over America"? We shall see...

Martha Bolton's refreshing take on life will have her fans-new and old-laughing as they nod in agreement. Her observations about how much the world has changed over the years and how much it has stayed the same, about both the tragedies and the comedies of life, about faith, family, health food, exercise, air travel, and the challenges of middle age are just a few of the topics from which she spins her memorable anecdotes.

Transmutation of mundane experiences to moments of hilarity.......2005-02-16
Most of us are candidates for headaches at some point of time in our lives. Instead of allowing our thoughts giving us headache, we can use humor to keep us sane and to keep the headaches at bay. Martha takes the most mundane experiences in our lives and turn them into moments of hilarity. Martha Bolton is a full-time comedy writer and the author of 40+ books. She has received two Angel awards and an Emmy nomination.
The cover page is the modern version of Auguste Rodin's famous sculpture `The thinker'. As you must have seen, the man in the sculpture thinks as a full body exercise - not only with his brain, his knitted brow, nostrils, compressed lips, with every muscle of his arms, legs clenched first and gripping toes. Socrates allowed himself ample time and space to think. Thinking is hard work. No wonder it gives us a headache.
Socrates never would have survived today's crowded schedules. There are too many meetings to go to, projects to work on, e-mails that need answering, and kids who need to be picked up from soccer practice, piano lessons, karate classes, and gymnastics. We're too busy living life to take any time to actually contemplate it.
As proclaimed by Anton Chekhov "Any idiot can face a crisis-it's this day-to-day living that wears you out." That's why this book is important-thinking and laughing for day-do-day living. Thinking about how much our world has changed over the years. And how much it has stayed the same. Thinking about both the tragedies and the comedies of life. Thinking about politics, faith, family, health food, exercise, air travel, modern conveniences, and more. Let us study Martha Bolton's refreshing take on life.
Martha starts the connection of headaches to drugs (p 17), food (p19), work (p23), space (p29) name tags (p33). She describes brain exercises, brain concerts, brain speeches and brain skydiving (p37). Her delineation of Methuselah and Methuselah tree (p 41-44) is humorous and thought provoking. She points out nicely how by adapting to circumstances and shaping our attitudes we can survive easily. She recommends chocolate for healing and healthy life (p 53-54), stresses the importance of a penny (p 59-62), deals with noises (p 63-65). She says as a matter of fact that minds are never meant to be shrink wrapped. She traces the connection between words, meaning and language (p 77-79). We should put more thought into our words. She comments about inventions (p 81-83) and on e-speak (p 85-88). The sample email communication she mentions is pertinent and relevant. She emphasizes good listening skills (p 95-97),the hazards of air travel (103-105), the hazards of poor memory and the gifts of selective memory (p 111-113). The title `borrowed thoughts' for headaches due to credit cards is excellent and apt. (p 115-117) She proves that children are the same from the days of Socrates (p 137 - 138). She describes nicely the idiosyncracies of instructions and announcements in public places (p 139-141). Even Queen Elizabeth II's family has eccentricities, family disagreements and wayward youngsters. But a family keeps life interesting. Martha wants to see a hypochondriac line of greeting cards (p 147-149). She elaborates how friends, parents, dieters and Christians can act as travel agents for guilt trips. She succinctly puts, `Life is too short to carry heavy purses. Carrying a grudge is like being stung to death by one bee (p 155-158). She wants you to wear a hat if a meteor is headed your way. Imagination of worrying scenarios is borrowing trouble from tomorrow. The strength is not there - only the worry and stress (p 159-161). She humorously connects cloning and business group discounts (p 163-164). She stresses the importance of fun : We are afraid to use the laugh muscles that came with the original packaging. We allowed our smiles to sag and our negative outlook to drag us down. God intended each new dawning to be met with anticipation, not apprehension; wonder, not whining. Martha elucidates the common exercise of jumping to conclusions - how it can jeopardize the relationships, jobs and peace of mind (p 173-175). Martha's emphasis on laughter is illuminating : "It is perfectly legal to laugh and drive. Laughter does not have an expiration date. The average child laughs about 400 times per day. An average adult laughs 15 times a day. What happened to the other 385 laughs?
The quotations underlying the title and the end of the passage are eye-openers and they amplify the experience. I liked this one in p 107 : "All our words are but crumbs that fall down from the feast of the mind"-- Khalil Gibran and the one in p 131 : "The difference between the right word and almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug" -- Mark Twain and the one in p 161 : "Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It is already tomorrow in Australia." - - Charles Schultz

Intensive training for the advanced player.......2006-07-25
One of the best ways to improve at chess is to study master games, using a guess-the-next-move approach. This forces the reader to participate actively in the game, thus blazing new neural pathways, rather than just "reading and nodding" (as GM Nigel Davies would say). On other pages I have recommended "Solitaire Chess" by Bruce Pandolfini, "Multiple Choice Chess I and II" by Graeme Buckley, and "Test Your Chess" by Daniel King, written just for this type of training. This new title by Zenon Franco justly takes its place alongside them.
Unlike the other books identified above, Franco's does not ask the reader to take the role of one player (Black or White) at the start of each game; he also does not ask the reader to guess each move. Instead, the reader is quizzed on the dozen or two critical moments for either player during the game. Sometimes the reader is given move choices to select from, other times not. Point scores are won or lost along the way, and there is a table for interpreting final score at the end of the game.
I am sympathetic to the reviewer who thought that the scoring system is ungenerous, and that the test is too difficult. Indeed, I agree that the book is extraordinarily challenging, and may be of little use to players at USCF level C (B?) and below. And yes, the scoring system is not normalized against the results of rated players. Still, I found the book to be so rewarding, enjoyable and beneficial that to me these objections are outweighed.
The games are mostly from recent decades, and feature mostly recognizable super-GMs. Talk about tough love: Franco unreservedly shoves the reader into the pitiless jungle of modern dynamic chess. Some of the correct answers will depend on the reader selecting the right line of analysis (let's say) 18 ply deep. Or finding a move that eluded a world championship contender at classical time controls. Or making a leap of intuitive judgment worthy of Tal.
If you are up to the challenge, working conscientiously through this book will help you reach your next level of chess achievement. If you are not ready for it yet, start with Pandolfini, Buckley and King (in that order!); also - play a lot of slow games against strong competition. With each of these books I recommend setting aside a fair amount of time, writing out variations on a notepad, and doing all of the analysis without moving the pieces. It may help to have a game clock ticking in the background just to simulate the tournament conditions.
The physical and visual qualities of this book are outstanding, as usual from this publisher.
One other thing was striking about this experience. After working through each game I would go over it yet again with a strong computer engine. It's amazing how often a Grandmaster picks what the computer deems an inferior move - only for the human to be proved correct once the computer is "led by hand" through the critical line. This goes to show how computers are still rather primitive when it comes to positional and strategic judgments. The only reason they beat humans in practical matches is that human make tactical errors (well, computers also have huge opening books and perfect endgame tablebases...).
MAJOR GRIPE.......2006-04-17
This is a very difficult book. It is probably too hard for C players and perhaps B players. My main gripe is that moves selected or predicted by the reader which turn out to be the same moves played by the GM during the game often get 0 credit because they aren't the absolute best move (usually the best moves are determined years later by further GM analysis or Fritz). Selecting the move played by the GM deserves some credit unless it's an absolute blunder (which is highly unlikely). The production values of the book are excellent and the teaching value is exemplary. A secondary gripe is the scoring system. What, for example, does "good level" or "not bad at all" mean? It would have been preferable to use a scoring system similar to Khmelinitsky's (Chess Exam) where he uses USCF categories and percentages. That, of course, would have reqired some actual norming.
The Ultimate Training Tool.......2006-03-02
This is the greatest training book that I have seen, ever! It cannot simply be read, it must be studied. I suggest using the chess set you use in tournaments, a score sheet for you answers and some blank paper to cover the sections you have not gotten to yet.
I want to be very clear that I do not believe that this book should be used by beginners. If you have not progressed beyond the 1500 level it may be more frustration than it is worth.
Now, if you are an average to somewhat strong player, 1600 - 2000, and you are serious about competing then this book will be of great value to you. I have tried for the past year to use the solitaire chess method to study various books and it simply did not work because other books were not designed to be studied in this way. This book, however, stops you and asks you to choose from among various moves or simply what your next move might be, and grades you accordingly. This makes the possibility of accidentally seeing the next move much less likely. Another key feature is that Franco also asks questions concerning moves that were not in the main line. If Black played 18... Bxd4 but another possible move was 18... c5 Franco might ask what you would have played against that move. And if you are training leave the board as it is and imagine how it would look after the move in question and examine the possible variations without moving the pieces, just like you would have to do in a real game.
I also recommend preparing for each lesson by studying one or two games from the opening played in the game you are about to study. For instance, before I studied the first lesson I looked at the ECO code of the game and then found the game Lasker - Steinitz in the same variation in Kasparov's My Great Predecessors Vol I. The lesson was certainly more enjoyable because I felt confident that I new some of the ideas behind the opening, even though the games progressed in totally different manners.
Since I first wrote this review I have come across two other important techniques that can be incorporated into a study regimen with this book. This first is using ChessBase or another program to create easily reviewable flash cards of key positions that you mishandled or that struck you as a new strategic or tactical idea which you had never seen before. The second idea being to actually analyze your play as you would if it were your own OTB game in a tournament, looking at why your errors were wrong and why the correct move was better.
This book is designed to make training seriously and intensely very easy for you. It has an excellent table of contents and index of games and openings. It is a must for any serious student.
Tough tests mean real improvement.......2005-12-08
This book will make you better. Believe me! Buying this book will do for your chess what buying a set of weights will do for your figure. All you have to do (in both cases) is put in the effort, and I mean serious effort. This guy has gone to an enormous amount of trouble to make it easy for you to improve. This is a workout at the gym, with the best equipment, a personal trainer, no queues for the machines, and your favourite music playing. It's going to leave you breathless and quivering with exhaustion, dripping with sweat, but with rapidly strengthening muscles and no more weight problems. There are 50 games, which Franco has analysed thoroughly. He has then identified important points, every few moves, and presents you with questions. Sometimes, you have to choose between several moves (and justify your choice). Sometimes, it's just 'find the move', and there's no guidance. Often he'll deliberately include a move that is highly dubious, but appealing to a club-player. He's pretty vicious with the scoring! You can lose a lot of hard-earned points for carelessly picking a nice-looking move - but then, doing the same thing in a game could cost you one much more important point. The scoring structure for each game covers everything from duffer to grandmaster, and the point is to make you think. So you try, you think harder and harder in pursuit of those elusive points, and boy does it do you good! OK, it's very easy to blunder points away and end up in duffer category, but so so satisfying when you get the plan of the game correct and finish up with a master score. I'm not sure who would get grandmaster points, as sometimes even the actual moves, the ones the grandmasters played, are the very ones that lose you points! It's like being at the gym with about five weights on the machine, and there's about 30 weights altogether - you wonder just who on earth could possibly move all those weights... Unless you're into chess-boxing, it's probably never going to be you or me, but we can try for more of Franco's points!
In short, this is an outstanding book to stretch your abilities and asess your chess strength.

An excellent book.......2004-07-09
This book is exactly what I've needed. I'm at the point where I want to play some tournament chess (despite my mediocre ability) and I fortunately came across this book. Nigel Davies offers some sound and practical advice, and does so in a highly readable and down-to-earth manner. In particular I found his advice on building an opening repertoir useful; common sense when you think of it, but for many budding chess players, the whole notion of learning all of the openings has them frantically trying to memorize every conceivable line. Unrealistic and unnecessary, to say the least. Anyway, before I launch into a total summary of the book, I'll just close by recommending this book to any novice who wants to start playing in tournaments.
Terrific Guide for A to C Players.......2002-08-08
Nigel Davies is a Grandmaster who has a keen understanding of the needs and limitations of club players. In working with club players, he has analyzed thousands of club level games. This, coupled with his Grandmaster status, gives him a unique view of the club player's needs and desires. His book The Chess Player's Battle Manual: Equip Yourself for Competitive Play is perfect for club players looking to improve.
Davies offers tactical improvement advice in his first chapter ("The Vision Thing"). Tactics are the basis of victories for most club players. The biggest problem seems to occur in creating a tactically friendly environment. Most club players take one of three approaches: The first approach is to try to memorize the mountains of opening theory in the hope of getting to a good middlegame position, the second approach is to view the memorization of opening theory as too daunting, and therefore not worth the energy. This group just "wings it." Lastly, some club players try to find lines with little theory to memorize. These can be quirky off-beat lines or solid openings that rely on the understanding of certain themes. I personally moved from the first approach after getting my brains beat in while trying to play the Sicilian Defense (Dragon Variation) to the third option, playing the KIA as white, and the Caro Kann and Kings Indian Defense as black. I have since moved from the KID to the Dutch as I could not keep up with the mountains of theory in the KID.
The Chess Player's Battle Manual addresses the need for understanding where the opening leads the player. Chapter two (A Game Plan) addresses this issue. Though Davies does not use the quote,"Any fool can know, the point is to understand" by Albert Einstein, that is the gist of his second chapter. Davies tells the reader that "memorization alone is not enough". He also explains why players continue to rely on memorization without understanding. He tells the reader to study positions that arise in the openings they play. Davies understands the time limitations club players have, and stresses that understanding of the positions will benefit the club player at least as much as rote memoization of opening lines.
In chapter three (Building an Opening Reportoire), Davies addresses a problematic area connected to chapter two that all club players face, "What openings should I play?" We have all been there. We learn the Ruy Lopez early and are told that this is probably the best opening for white. Then we discover the huge memorization task in front of us. We try the Sicilian Defense because it offers black the best chance to win. We play the Kings Indian Defense because it can be played against all other lines, or we play QGD defenses, because they seem natural. Before we know it we are buried in theory. These are all great openings, but require a great deal of time to learn. Many players, like myself, get shocked into more passive positional type games, that we may or may not be suited for. I switched to the Kings Indian Attack with a decent level of success, but always felt that I should be able to really punish weaker players. I always had the desire to play a more attacking style. Davies speaks to this subject saying that in his "experience the majority of players at club level and beyond like to hold the initiative and attack." To that end he recommends 1. e4. But he does not leave it there, he goes further saying, "If your time is limited I suggest you use a more practical approach." He goes on to suggest that the aggressive club player play opening lines of lesser known attacking grandmasters like Victor Kupreichik. It is Davies' belief that these lines may startle your opponents. He gives ideas for gambiteers and ideas for repertoire lines against the many varied defenses the club player will face. The section of this chapter I found most interesting (as I had been toying with the Colle System and the Stonewall Attack) was 1.d4 repertiore suggestions. He suggests studying the games of GM Ranier Knaak an attacking d4 player. He also mentions what he calls "The d4 charge" which he covers in the next chapter. Against 1.e4 he recommends the Sicilian Accelerated Dragon which yields sharp Dragon formations with a much more limited amount of theory (and without the dangers of the Yugoslav Attack). Against 1.d4, he lauds the KID, but suggests the Dutch as an aggressive but much less studied alternative.
Chapters 4,5, and 6 deal with handling three faddish openings at the club level. Davies does a nice job of giving good advice on the handling of these dangerous openings (The d4 Charge - Colle, Stonewall type attacks, the Trompowsky and the Grand Prix Attack in the Sicilian. I was so intrued by The d4 Charge chapter that I have begun to play it as white (with good success). These three chapters are not just fill, as they are helpful to club players.
Chapter 7 deal with the often neglected , but very important "Endgame." Davies correctly advises players with limited spare that "study of the endgames is the single most effective means of improving results." I won my first tournament game as an unrated player verses a 1710 player by outplaying him in the endgame. This is a vital and oft neglected area.
Chapter 8 deals with playing against and using computers, while chapter 9 offers advice good advice on practical play.
Chapters 10 and 11 are small tactical puzzle sections.
If you are going to play me in the future, please don't buy this book, however if you want to improve your chess playing ability, and you are an A to C and possibly D player, this is one of the books you want.
Good advice.......2001-05-30
Grandmaster Davies is one of Britain's better Chess players and teachers and it shows in his writing. It's eminently readable, simple and clear. The advice given is filled with common sense and the reader should be able to utilise them without too much trouble. A slight drawback is the fact that there isn't that much new or original material (hence the four instead of five starts).
Highly Practical Advice For Less-Experienced Players.......1999-07-07
This book is definitely more valuable to 1800 and below USCF-rated players than Tisdall's or Nunn's (although those are interesting reads too). Davies' experience as a chess coach shows: he focuses on practical tips for improving "the vision thing": calculating, tactics, plans, developing opening repertoires, etc. Unlike Nunn, he doesn't drift (e.g., into a detailed, intricate discussion of an endgame that only strong masters could truly appreciate). Unlike Tisdall, Davies offers advice on opening repertoires, computer chess, and elementary pawn formations. The biggest drawback to this book is the impression, from the middle three chapters (on playing against three different current faddish openings), that Davies simply wanted to fill out the book. If he had, instead, integrated his earlier chapters, with an exposition on three different possible opening reps, that would have been more logical and timeless. Too bad - Davies is truly an author in line with his target audience, the others, I think, aim a little high.
Full of practical advice for Experts and Class players.......1999-05-29
This book is in danger of being lost in the shuffle as it came out at about the same time as similar efforts by Nunn and Tisdall, but - speaking as an Expert - I found this as informative and entertaining as the other two. The weaker you are, the more I would recommend Davies's book. He is well-known in Britain as a chess coach, especially of juniors and what we call average club players. Here he really does provide practical tips that will act as a battle manual for the tournament player.

As a follow-up to his bestselling book Life Strategies, Oprah acolyte Phillip C. McGraw, Ph.D., moves from aiding the aimless individual to coaching the disconnected couple. McGraw has distilled his more than two decades of counseling experience into a seven-step strategy he calls "Relationship Rescue."
"I'm prepared to kick a hole in the wall of the pain-ridden, unhappy maze you've gotten yourself into, and provide you clear access to action-oriented answers and instructions on what you must do to have what you want," says Dr. Phil. His aim is to expose and eliminate the saboteurs that cause senseless damage to already-fragile marriages, and, like an emotional root canal, to replace them with values he says provide positive results. If you follow Dr. Phil's strategy, he will lead you on a precise journey to uncover your heart and then share it with your partner as part of taking the "risk of intimacy."
Dr. Phil leads you to "reconnect with your core" in the first five steps of his seven-step strategy. By no means a quick fix, there are in-depth and rigorous questionnaires, surveys, tests, and profiles that require a "brutally candid" mindset, with such fill-in-the-blanks as "List five things that today would make you fall out of love with your partner." With this internal work accomplished, you'll then move on to reconnecting with your partner during a two-week, half-hour-a-day short course. As a "dyad," you and your loved one take turns giving monologues on topics such as "The most positive thing I took away from my mother and father's relationship was..."
Once the "reconnection" has been established, Dr. Phil says the work shifts to a management role, as relationships are always a work in progress. Dr. Phil humorously refers to his own marriage throughout the book, sharing his mishaps and victories in learning to accept and enjoy what he sees as fundamental but complementary differences between men and women. --John Youngs

In his tell-it-like-it-is style that already has had an impact on millions of viewers of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Phil blows the whistle on the rhetoric of traditional "couples therapy." McGraw explodes the ten most popular myths about good relationships and provides a series of fascinating exercises that allow for a step-by-step process for you to reconnect with your partner. This is a transformative book that not only will put you back on track with your partner, but you'll know that you are back on track with yourself.

Foundation Work.......2007-09-10
Relationship Rescue is targetted for those people who have relationships in serious trouble. However, it is also useful for those people who feel that there relationship is stagnating or going through a significant transition period, such as having children, children leaving home or one partner retiring.
The methods are well-established for handling most problems between any two people. You start with yourself. What needs cleaning up in your life? Because, truly, you are the only person that you can control, and even that can be a problem!
The methods given to reconnect with a partner are clear and powerful. If both parties can give the relationship a fighting chance, these steps might be what you need to reconnect, rediscover and fall in love all over again.
On the other hand, the book might be too overwhelming for some people who are in a real crisis. In that case, it could be a companion guide as the couple (or even just one of the couple) works with a helping professional such as a clergy memeber, coach or therapist.
Insightful and amazing.......2007-08-11
Phil McGraw never ceases to amaze me. Marriage therapy in-person would cost thousands to have this sort of information given out on a silver platter. The only thing missing is the obvious direct and personal feedback, but isn't that worth $20? vs. $100 per hour? This is a no-nonsense book or CD that will help you grow and deal with life even better than you ever have. If one takes the time to self-reflect and realize how much control we actually do have in our lives to allow conflict or not; it's actually all very simple. I do not know of a more gifted doctor at reading between the lines and caring about families and life's situations than Dr. Phil. To generate the quality of TV and also produce such excellent resources to us all is truly a blessing. He deserves every bit of his success and to enjoy his practice. Highly recommend this if you are willing to open your mind yourself and not expect someone else to solve your own problems, rather appreciate that someone helps give "you" the gift of insight and clarity to solve your own. The relationship will only improve and survive if "both" partners end up adjusting things anyway, but you can still triumph yourself no matter if the rescue is possible or not.
