Book Description
Site Specific Art brilliantly charts the development of an experimental art form in an experimental way. Nick Kaye traces the fascinating historical antecedents of today's installation and performance art, while also assembling a unique documentation of contemporary practice around the world.
The book is divided into individual analyses of the themes of space, materials, site, and frames. These are interspersed by specially commissioned documentary artwork from some of the world's foremost practitioners and artists working today. This interweaving of critique and creativity has never been achieved on this scale before.
Site Specific Art investigates the relationship of architectural theory to an understanding of contemporary site related art and performance, and rigorously questions how such works can be documented.
The artistic processes involved are demonstrated through entirely new primary articles from:
* Meredith Monk
* Station House Opera
* Brith Gof
* Forced Entertainment
* Michelangelo Pistoletto .
This volume is an astonishing contribution to debates around experimental cross-arts practice.

from Westminster John Knox Press.......2007-06-01
What is a Christian to make of religious diversity? How does one affirm faith in Jesus Christ and seek to live according to the teachings of Christian faith and at the same time live with neighbors who are not Christian? This book is written for Christians who are concerned to make sense of this challenge of living with religious diversity. For the most part, the author does not write about other religious traditions, the ways they approach reality and understand God, or the moral claims they make; this is not a book about "comparative religions." What the author does is present one way that Christians can think about this topic from the standpoint of her faith tradition.

Enter Sesshomaru, Jaken, and the Tetsusaiga.......2007-05-17
In Inuyasha volume 2, the story of Inuyasha and Kagome continues. If you haven't read volume 1 and haven't seen the anime, go read it! otherwise you won't understand the following review:
Our two main heroes Inuyasha and Kagome return to the Feudal Era to confront Yura, an evil being that has the power to control hair. Such a power might not seem too dangerous, but she really is deadly! How will our heroes fair in their first fight as a team?
When the volume continues, we are introduced to several new characters, but very important ones since they'll be in the story for its remainder. First, an old flea named Myoga,a vassal to his late demon father, tells Inuyasha someone is trying to break into his father's tomb to steal his treasure. As Myoga explains what's happening, Inuyasha's late mortal mother is also discussed.
Just who is the theif? Why it's Sesshomaru, Inuyasha's older full demon brother! Sesshomaru is arguably the most popular character in the series and definitely my favorite. He has brought with him his toad like servant Jaken who wields the Staff of Two Heads(sometimes referred to as Staff of the Skulls) to locate the tomb. It soon becomes clear that Sesshomaru will have to confront Inuyasha to get to their father's treasure. This makes for a very interesting and emotional meeting leaving you with a sense of Sesshomaru's huge level of cruelty(for now).
Just what is the treasure though? It's the Tetsusaiga, a sword made from a fang of Inuyasha's father! The powerful sword can slay 100 demons in one sweep, but it rejects Sesshomaru. When Inuyasha is also unable to get it, Kagome surprises all! Inuyasha eventually gets the weapon, but now that Sesshomaru has transformed into his full demon form, can Inuyasha win?
Overall, this is a roughly 200 page terrific installment of Inuyasha. It reads from left to right which may bother some, though not me personally. I suggest this for all 13 and up as their is nudity and much violence including multiple decapitations. This volume is EXTREMELY action packed. The volume has much fighting, but does a nice job of blending emotion and character introductions. This volume definitely has a great story, introduces interesting new characters, and has much action. The story will only continue to get better!
Manga Fan.......2007-04-19
I'll start with the good. The artwork is excellent. There is a rich and addicting story line. The characters have enduring personalities. I really love this series. I typically always start reading Manga and then watch the anime if it goes that far. However, with Inuyasha it was the opposite for me. One of the reasons I was originally hesitant to read the manga was that it goes from front to back instead of back to front. This means the manga has bad editing issues. Basically to do this the editors have to flip every single image and reverse the image order. At first it wasn't too bad, but there is always a character like Sesshomaru... Every time he is in the manga it's like nails on a chalkboard. Because of the flipping everything about him just screams 'Those idiot American Editors Abused me!' His fluffy and armor are on the wrong side. His crescent moon is backwards. And Because of the flipping he always looks like his right arm was cut off and not the left. Because of this technical glitch the manga appears sloppy. However, the poor choice of flipping the contents doesn't take away from the amazing story. It is still a really good read. One just has to get over all the glitches.
Yes I think this series is great.......2006-12-28
I won't spill anything but this second book is very actiony for a second book. Be sure to read all the booms and other thinks like that (it's kinda fun) (^-^). I hope you buy it you won't be sorry
A teen's point of view.......2005-08-12
When I first saw InuYasha, it was about a year ago on TV, and I thought it was the weirdest show(of course, I had no idea it was Inuyasha, I was flipping channels. I discovered that recently when they re-aired the episode.). Some guy with long white hair and fangs? Demons weren't my thing. Then, about three weeks ago, after recently getting hooked onto Japanese manga, I was browsing the designated aisle at Borders, and the bright yellow spine caught my eye. I had remembered my little brother going on about it, and so curiosity got the better of me, and I started reading it in the store. I was immediately hooked. It's a thrilling tale, really, with humor, a bit of bad language, and innocent romance. And that's why, after three days of no trips to Borders, I couldn't take it. I resorted to Amazon. It came in pretty quick too, I was surprised. Afterward I got myself hooked on the show, but I'm not here to review that, am I? Anyways, a long review short, it's a great story by a great author, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
AND HE TRIED TO SLAY HIS BROTHER!.......2005-07-18
The first half of this volume concerns the continuing battle with Yura of the Hair, a witch who is able to puppeteer corpses and use her hair to cut off body parts. Yes, she's always having a bad hair day! Sorry about that. In what I believe will be an ongoing trend, Inuyasha finds that he can't defeat Yura alone because only Kagome can see Yura's strands of hair. In the second story arc in this volume, a talking flea named Myoga, with the inappropriate title "Divine Grace" shows up to tell Inuyasha that someone is trying to rob his father's grave! That would-be graverobber is Sessho-Maru, Inuyasha's half-brother and full-blooded demon, which makes him more powerful than our anti-hero. Let's just say there's no love lost between the two, because there isn't any love at all! Looks like Inuyasha might have to call on Kagome again as the two square off.
Rumiko Takahashi is a true manga genius. Her artwork is beautiful. You find yourself actually seeing an anime in your head when you read her manga, because they are so exquisitely detailed, and the characters spring to life. The action is never confusing, and she never shrinks from realistic blood. There is also a sort of warm charm in the relationship between Inuyasha and Kagome that seems more real than even most shojo. Classic series.

Les Girls
ASIN: 0813122511 |
Book Description
Comedic film actress Kay Kendall, born to a theatrical family in Northern England, came of age in London during the Blitz. After starring in Britain's biggest cinematic disaster, she found stardom in 1953 with her brilliant performance in the low-budget film, Genevieve. She scored success after success with her light comic style in movies such as Doctor in the House, The Reluctant Debutante, and the Gene Kelly musical Les Girls.
Kendall's private life was even more colorful than the plots of her films as she embarked on a series of affairs with minor royalty, costars, directors, producers and married men. In 1954 she fell in love with her married Constant Husband costar Rex Harrison and accompanied him to New York, where he was starring on Broadway in My Fair Lady. It was there that Kendall was diagnosed with myelocytic leukemia.
Her life took a romantic and tragic turn as Harrison divorced his wife and married Kendall. He agreed with their doctor that she was never to know of her diagnosis, and for the next two years the couple lived a hectic, glamorous life together as Kendall's health failed. She died in London at the age of 32, shortly after completing the filming of Once More with Feeling!, her husband by her side.
The Brief, Madcap Life of Kay Kendall was written with the cooperation of Kendall's sister Kim and includes interviews with many of her costars, relatives and friends. A complete filmography and numerous rare photographs complete this first-ever biography of Britain's most glamorous comic star.
Customer Reviews:
Dark Allegory.......2005-04-11
Eve Golden is one of the best writers about Hollywood and about screen acting that we have. If I had my way, she would be declared a national treasure. I think of her as an American writer, but she has been able to get the gist of Anna Held's mysterious European origins and now she turns her gaze onto Kay Kendall, the epitome of postwar UK chic, and she comes up with another winner.
Kay Kendall's life, and especially her death, made her a legend in the late 1950s, and if she is pretty much forgotten nowadays it is not due to a lack of ardent fans who love her, like I do. Once more of her films are released on DVD perhaps we will have a revaluation of her work as an actress, sort of the way people started to appreciate Norma Shearer only within the last 20 years, based on the policy of going back to the films and seeing what worked, what didn't in them. Who among us for example has more than the vaguest of memories of ONCE MORE WITH FEELING, the Stanley Donen comedy which was Kendall's last picture. Poor thing she had to co-star with the film world's biggesr ham, Yul Brynner, while at home she was getting locked out of her hotel room by Rex Harrison, her husband, who was pretending to enjoy his tempestuous relationship with her while trying to keep the secret from her that she was dying of leukemia. Eve Golden and Kim Kendall try to give thhe devil his due, but by the end of the book you're thinking that meeting Rex Harrison was the worst mistake poor Kay ever made in her tragically abbreviated life.
Dirk Bogarde was a close friend to Kay, and Eve Golden apparently was able to interview him at great length in the years before his death. His contributions give the book a lot of depth, while the recollections of Princess Lilian are also important, historically. I also liked the memories of Kay's younger half-brother Cavan Kendall, who must have been around 20 when his sister died but who retains a lot of the crystal sharp memories of youth.
Yes, Kay Kendall had her faults, and chief among them was her inability to see that she was doing wrong when she wanted something (such as someone else's boyfriend or husband). In context, Golden lets us realize that some young women who grew up in London during the blitz had an amoral attitude towards grasping the brass ring. Because at any moment death might rain down from the sky, the feeling was, live for today, and damn the consequences.
Yes, Kendall had her faults but I do not see that it was the job of the biographer to gloss them over. She wouldn't have been hman if she was just the madcap clotheshorse she played in a handful of sophisticated flicks. She did sterling work for Muriel Box, Vincente Minnelli, George Cukor. For that I would forgive her many sins. And her death is still very sad. Hopefully Kay's sister, Kim, will live to see a day when the disease that carried Kay off will be eliminated from the face of the earth. "And there will be no more dying then . . . " as it says in Holy Writ.
The Divine Kay.......2003-06-23
This was a book I eagerly anticipated and I was not let down. Entertaining show biz author Eve Golden weaves a fun story around show business's most glamorous comedienne. From day one, Kay Kendall lived a fast-paced, fun-filled life, mixed with a semi-successful career filled with interesting and witty friends.
As the world knows, Kay Kendall's life was cut short following a losing battle with leukemia, a disease everyone swears she never knew she had. Her marriage to Rex Harrison is honestly told and the author manages to bring Kay's story to print in a slender volume that is filled with reminiscences from family and friends.
A fun read, a delightful tribute to the Divine Kay.
Utterly fantastic - in true Golden style........2002-11-16
This is Eve Golden's best book yet, and that's saying a lot. While many Americans are unaware of Kay Kendall's short, but significant, career, Ms. Kendall's popularity over the pond remains unwavering. Her life story is told in a style true to Kendall's off-screen persona: funny, witty, sharp, and always interesting. As the subject matter could have ended up a cliched tearjerker with Kendall's death, Golden instead takes the high road. Highly recommended for any fan or Kendall's, Golden's, or movies in general.
Anything but a delight...the book, not the subject.......2002-11-09
After waiting years for a bio about the magnificent Kay Kendall, Eve Golden's effort is little more than tin. The book is a laundry list of Kendall's personality quirks and defects (film stars documented as self-centered is a revelation?) and completely misses the mark. Kendall was so extraordinary and special as an actress, and this book, tragically, misses that which clearly made her so memorable. Several of Kendall's films are watchable only due to her presence and there is no mention of that here. Golden has chosen to focus on the personal details at the expense of Kendall's charm and uniqueness as a performer. It seems that cooperation of Kendall's sister, Kim, was necessary to provide documentation about their childhood and early careers, however, this doesn't seem to have helped the book much. Previous bios on Rex Harrison have better captured the essence of Kendall's star quality (i.e. Alexander Walker's). Noel Coward's diary entry for Kendall's London stage performance in THE BRIGHT ONE does more to illuminate this great actress than this book: "Went to see a dreadful play in which Kay Kendall was enchanting..." THAT was Kendall's gift. This book does nothing to endorse that consensus.
did we read the same book?.......2002-11-02
I am quite a fan of Kay Kendall, having been charmed by her performance in "Genevieve" at an early age. I found Ms.Golden's book to be a wonderful read. I am usually disappointed by "Hollywood" biographies, which ,it seems, are either hagiography or sleazy "tell-alls". Thankfully Ms.Golden falls into neither camp. Her work is respectful without being fawning, well-researched without being dully academic.
Her recounting of Kay Kendall's life shows insight into Kay's character, without resorting to the fashionable psycho-babble which too often afflicts current biographies.
Kay Kendall emerges from this biography as a much more complex and interesting character than I would have imagined. Her relationship with Rex Harrison is beautifully realised and his place in her last years, which could easily have been both maudlin and melodramatic, instead becomes poignant and ultimately deeply moving. It would be difficult to understand Kay's later years without an understanding of Harrison's character, and Ms. Golden gives us enough understanding of Harrison to enable us to really understand the bond between Harrison and Kay.
If you have never heard of Kay Kendall, you will still enjoy this book and when you have finished you will be beating a path to your local video shop to find Kay's films. If you have heard of her, well, same deal.
Ms.Golden has,in her writing, an increasingly rare quality in modern biography writing; respect for the intelligence of her reader.
Her research is clearly thorough and she paints a convincing picture not just of Kay herself, but of the social context from which she emerged and in which she lived.
The other aspect of Ms. Golden's writing which deserves mention is it's lightness (which should never be mistaken for superficiality). I refer to the sheer readability of the book. Kay was clearly a charming personality and Ms. Golden's style is appropriate: it is elegant and sweet-natured, with a lovely sense of humour without ever resorting to flippancy. Sort of like Kay herself.
If you expect an author to spell everything out to you, then perhaps you will be disappointed. If you expect sleaze and scandal and shoddy research, you may also be disappointed. If, however, you appreciate being treated as an intelligent adult reader, then you will find this book to be insightful, enlightening and, as much as anything else, wonderfully entertaining.Once again, much like Kay herself.
Book Description
Backgammon is the ultimate race game and has been enjoyed around the world for over five thousand years. Although the play is highly skilful, the fact that the moves rely on the fall of the dice introduces a large element of luck. In the long run the better player will always win, but the beauty of the game is that even a novice can win the odd game against a world champion.
In this user-friendly introduction to the game, ex-British champion Paul Lamford provides newcomers to the game with a thorough grounding in the essentials of play.
Customer Reviews:
The best book for a beginner.......2006-01-12
I used to be reluctant to approach the player tables to watch, because I knew so little about the game: its play and strategy.
Now I feel that I have been coached by a real champion and Paul Lamford was the Backgammon Champion for England and Wales. The author's advice is practical and confidence building. I wish I had read the book long ago, but I am happy that I finally did and recommend it to all beginners.
Simply the Best.......2005-12-30
I am a professional player, and I think that this book is simply the best one available for players who are seriously interested into the game from beginners to advanced players.
it is not for someone who just wants to know about the rules
in order to play occasionally.
It contains a lot of important concepts and - contary to many other beginners books - contains nearly no errors. and - its rather cheap!
Second best: the backgammon Handbook by Heyken and Fischer..
Highly recomemndend
Great book, but not really for beginners.......2003-03-05
The ideal reader for this book is someone who has already played a lot of backgammon and has a feel for basic checker play, and is now ready to become good. People who don't yet have a feel for the ebb and flow of the game will be better served by books like Robertie's Backgammon for Winners and Backgammon for Serious Players--those books are built around annotated games.
Lamford takes a different approach, packing an exceptional amount of useful information into a slim volume. Lamford tells you things that experts know but that you won't learn from any moderate amount of over-the-board experience. It is a beginner's book in the sense that he tries (reasonably successfully) to distill the information into maxims and rules of thumb that are fairly easy to remember. The books is exceptionally clear, but it says most of the important things exactly once. One often wishes for more examples or a more extended discussion. Whenever you feel this way, you should reread--the information was there, it was just so concise that you didn't get it the first time.
Get the book. If you don't understand it, put it aside and pick up Robertie (and play more games). But come back to it when you're ready for it because once you're no longer a raw beginner, it will help you get better faster than any other.
Terrible.......2002-07-23
This is a terrible book. It doesn't accomplish what it purports.
The back cover says, "Learn backgammon from scratch"; "An ideal
first backgammon book for all ages." A bunch of lies. The title
should be: To Double or not to Double; To Take or Pass. Because that's what this book is about: 95% of it bows to the contemporary player's god -- the doubling cube. Nothing is said
if it doesn't lead to a cube decision. In other words, you don't learn the game, you don't learn tactics or strategy(that should come first!); all you learn(maybe) is to double or not to double.
I said 95%. What about the other 5%? Also bad. The author contradicts himself. On page 20 he tells you that when you have to choose between hitting a blot and making a point, you should
hit. On page 21 there's an exercise where you have to do precisely that. But then you look up the solution and the author advises you to make a point and not hit!! When he's explaining the rules for beginners he tells you that if you have two checkers on one point, your opponent can't move onto it, but he forgets to tell you that this is called "making a point"; later
he uses this expression, which he hasn't explained. I know that, you know that, but does a rank beginner know that? And it's not
on the (poor) glossary at the end of the book either.
In essence, if you want to know more about the cube, maybe this book will help you; if you want to know more about the game itself(strategy, tactics), you'd better look elsewhere.
Good introduction to the doubling cube.......2002-04-17
This thin book is packed with useful information. Neural net software has significantly changed the way backgammon is played over the last 15 years, and this book incorporates those lessons in an excellent introduction to the game.
Furthermore, this book is the best introduction to the doubling cube that I have encountered. I grew up playing backgammon with my Armenian father. If you are also Armenian, Turkish, or Greek, you may have grown up playing backgammon in your family and already have a strong grasp of checker play but a weak grasp of the doubling cube. Other introductory backgammon books may be too simple for you. They may include one chapter on doubling which explains *how* to use it, but not how to evaluate a position to decide *when* to use it. And if you try to pick up an advanced book (like I did a few years ago before Lamford's book was available), the description of doubling decisions presumes so much prior knowledge as to be virtually unintelligible. This book adequately covers doubling theory at a beginner to intermediate level. Doubling decisions are kept in mind in every chapter of the book, and common reference positions are provided that show exactly when to double and when to take or drop.
Finally, the book has great reviews of both neural net backgammon software and of online gaming sites. This alone makes most previous introductory books obsolete.

The advice and concepts outlined in Automatic Wealth are best suited for those in their 30s-50s who recognize that their current job will never afford them true financial independence. Rather than encourage readers to quit their day jobs today and launch into a new scheme tomorrow, Masterson shows how to turn your skills and experience into significantly more money within seven to fifteen years. For those just getting by, he details how to get the biggest pay raises now and how to move into more lucrative ventures in the near future. For those with some savings, he offers specific advice on building equity and increasing net worth significantly and quickly. Since Masterson made his millions starting and developing small businesses, he encourages people to become entrepreneurs themselves and discusses which kinds of ventures to invest in and which ones to avoid. He also stresses the importance of developing multiple income streams, offering chapters on real estate, stocks and bonds, consulting, direct mail, and other opportunities.
In addition to concrete steps, Masterson also writes about attitude and expectations. His first step, in fact, is to take an honest and realistic assessment of your current financial situation and prepare yourself to change habits. He stresses that you must make getting rich a priority and devote the necessary time to it--act immediately and don't wait until the perfect moment to change your situation (hint: the perfect moment rarely arrives.). Clearly written and filled with informative anecdotes and examples, Automatic Wealth will not make you a millionaire overnight. It could, however, make you one in a decade, and that's a timeline most people can deal with. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
"I have known Michael for over twenty years. He has one of the smartest business minds I know. When he gives me advice, I pay attention, and you should, too. Automatic Wealth is full of wisdom and insight filtered by a master and brought to you in a well-written and delightful style."
-John Mauldin, Editor of the bestselling book, Just One Thing: Twelve of the World's Best Investors Reveal the One Strategy You Can't Overlook
"I am not usually a fan of this kind of book. One entitled Automatic Wealth made me suspicious. But I am a fan of Michael Masterson, and when I read the book, I was impressed. Masterson manages to go beyond the theory to tell you exactly how real people make real money in the real world. That, I think, is his genius. He's able to open his own eyes and see for himself what actually works. The result is original, clever, and very helpful to anyone who is serious about building wealth."
-Bill Bonner, coauthor of Empire of Debt: The Rise of an Epic Financial Crisis
"Michael Masterson has been a great friend of mine for over twenty years. I know for a fact that the strategy he teaches is the exact same strategy he has personally used to amass extraordinary wealth and prosperity for himself. He's reduced a normally daunting process down to six simple and unfailing steps YOU can absolutely use to vastly and rapidly increase your financial situation, often times doubling and redoubling your wealth every few years. This book will become your financial bible."
-Jay Abraham, author of Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got: 21 Ways You Can Out-Think, Out-Perform, and Out-Earn the Competition
"Michael Masterson's book is brilliant and concise, packed with breakthrough insights and unique wealth-building tips. Best of all, it's practical because it combines proven investment and financial planning advice with street-smart business and real estate secrets."
-Robert Ringer, author of Action!, Looking Out for #1, and To Be or Not to Be Intimidated?

Strategic Wealth Creation Guide for Mid-Lifers.......2007-09-18
Masterson knows wealth creation, having done it himself and coached thousands of others how to do it. This is a needed book for those in midlife who have not up to this point been diligently building their wealth and now need more aggressive strategies than those in their younger years who have time (and compounding interest) on their side.
Wealth does not just happen. You create it. You need strategies and you need to take action. For most people in midlife, this involves creating multiple streams of income and running your own side business to generate passive income (money coming in while you sleep). You might decide to keep your job (and there are good reasons for many to do so), but get ready to roll up your sleeves and start working for yourself.
Masterson's ETR ezine is one of the few I read. He's one of the "real deals" in wealth creation. Do not delay in picking up a copy of this book and GET GOING on creating your own financial security.

Wealthy book.......2007-03-09
I find it a very usuful book, make the map of your plan, a must.
Weak on content, strong on theory.......2007-03-04
This is a GOOD book, not a GREAT book. If you've never read anything about wealth building theory then you'll love this book. Otherwise, you'll find the same old rehashed material sliced and diced a dozen different ways in no less than 278 pages that seem to drone on endlessly.
As far as theory goes, you could do worse. The basics are all there. But the author could have easily told this story in half the space. You're not likely to learn anything new, unless you haven't been around the block yet. And you just might reinforce a few old ideas. But the content falls far short of the promise of the title, "Automatic Wealth".
And the six steps to financial independence? You can get as much reading Consumer Reports. It's a shame because I was hoping, even rooting for the author to give the reader more. There's nothing I love more than to give a glowing, enthusiast review of books that truly help people change their lives - either personally for financially. This book does neither.
If you have a young adult just about to graduate from college, make this book a gift. He or she is likely to learn a great deal. Ideally, the young tike will put a few of the concepts to practice (maybe patterned after YOUR example)?
Otherwise, look elsewhere for more realistic advice.
Great if it is the first book you'll read on the subject.......2007-01-12
This book does a great job of going over the basics---but so do most other books on the subject matter. Nothing new here.
Beginners will love this book. More hype and nothing new for the rest of us.
Enough material for a good chapter, not a whole book.......2006-09-02
A few good ideas that could have been a good chapter in another book.
