Stupid Amazon!.......2007-05-08
Don't bother ordering this through Amazon - They're out of stock and haven't been able to get more copies since February. My order keeps being delayed the day that it lists that it's supposed to ship. It's more expensive elsewhere, but at least you've got the option of actually getting it. I broke down and paid double the price listed by Amazon just so that I could stop waiting for it to arrive each month.
I've heard this is a fantastic reference. Now if only I could get a copy!
The best book for research in making historical costume.......2007-02-06
I found this book gives so many fine details of the clothing made in this century. It's a great help for ideas in trimming my own costumes, and shows how it was done in line drawings. The examples are awesome.
Great Resource Guide.......2007-01-12
This book is chock full of close-up photographs which show the details of garments that have been well preserved from the period. Laden with eye-candy for costumers, history buffs, and those who appreciate beautiful things. Readers will be amazed at the fine hand-work and examples of needlework shown on each garment. Not just a beautiful "coffee table" book! Well worth the purchase price!!
PLEASE READ BEFORE ORDERING THIS!!!.......2006-06-15
dear fellow costume and clothing passionate people like myself:
THIS TITLE IS SOLD OUT IN HB FORM FROM THE PUBLISHER. I ORDERED THIS FROM AMAZON IN MARCH 2006. I WAITED A GOOD TWO MONTHS BEFORE I CANCELLED THE ORDER. I THEN TRIED ORDERING IT FROM ECAMPUS AND I WAITED ABOUT A WEEK AFTER THE PROPOSED SHOULD ARRIVE BY DATE AND HAD TO CANCEL FROM THEM TOO, AS THEY ARE UNABLE TO GET THIS TITLE. SO I TURNED TO ANOTHER GREAT COSTUME RESOURCE ONLINE HEDGEHOG HANDWORKS. THIS IS WHAT THE WOMAN FROM THERE TOLD ME: THE PUBLISHER TOTALLY SOLD OUT THIS TITLE. SOLD OUT. THE PUBLISHER WILL NOT PRINT ANY MORE IN HB. PERIOD. THEY ARE SWITCHING TO SC FORMAT. THE NEW SC FORMAT WILL BE SOLD STARTING LATE OCT 2006. SO YOU'D BETTER WATCH FOR IT, AS I ASSUME IT TOO WILL SELL OUT! IF YOU ORDER THIS BOOK, YOU'LL BE HOLDING YOUR BREATH FOR A VERY VERY LONG TIME, AS AMAZON STRINGS YOU ALONG ALL THE WAY. TRY HEDGHOG HANDWORKS, OR EBAY, OR USED. TRY ALSO DIRECT FROM OVER SEAS AT THE V&A MUSEUM SHOP. ONLY ISSUE THERE IS WITH THE EXCHANGE RATE, YOU PAY ALOT MORE FOR THE TITLE. I HOPE THIS GETS READ BY LOTS OF PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO ARE WONDERING WHAT THE DEAL IS WITH GETTING A COPY OF THIS BOOK. I AM JUST KICKING MYSELF I DIDN'T ORDER IT LAST FALL. SIGH.
A gorgeous display of high-class 19th century Western clothing fashions.......2006-05-05
Nineteenth-Century Fashion In Detail is a gorgeous display of high-class 19th century Western clothing fashions. Shirts, dresses, gloves, shoes, and much more; each clothing piece is illustrated with a large full-color photograph, and its history and composition is described at length as befits a fabric work of art. The exquisite embroidery, tailoring, patterns, and other eye-catching details of the sample pieces make Nineteenth-Century Fashion In Detail a superb reference and inspirational sourcebook for clothing designers, costumers, and vintage clothing collectors. Also highly recommended are the companion volumes Historical Fashion in Detail: The 17th and 18th Centuries, and Modern Fashion in Detail.

Customer Reviews:
GOING HOME?.......2006-06-02
Volume 5 is the last installment of the Ultra Maniac and it wraps things up quite nicely. All the relationships are pretty much brought to their fruition but there's still some bumps along the way. Nina has some big decisions to make. Her classmate and half-witch Sayaka (who tried to kill her last volume) has asked Nina to stay away from Hiroki, because Sayaka likes him, but Nina refuses because SHE has feelings for him. When Sayaka throws a comment in Nina's face to the effect that "Why are you leading him on? You're going back to the Magical Kingdom anyway! Might as well cut it off now!" This really makes Nina think about where she wants to spend the rest of her life. Complicating things is the fact that a recruiter from the Magical Kingdom's prestigious Eltora Imperial University of Magic has come to persuade Nina to study at their school. They think Nina has the potential to be a great, if not the greatest witch of her generation. The problem is that she'll have to go away for 3 years, and leave all those on Earth that she loves!
The strength of Ultra Maniac has never been the magical girl concept, but the lovable characters. You really want everything to work out with them, and up until the last chapter, you're really left in suspense as to how it will all end up. The art is great, if a little generic. It's nice to see Nina grow up a bit and mature and go after her dreams. You never would have thought the girl in Volume 1 would've succeeded. The bonus chapter at the end was a little dumb and unnecessary and could have been done a lot better. All in all, this has been a wonderful series.
OFCOURSE THEY SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST.......2006-03-27
I agree with the first reveiw that the bonus should be part of the book. Dont read this if you dont want your book spoiled ! In the bonus their is a fake Nina that predends to be the real Nina. When the real Nina comes everbody is happy becouse the fake Nina was acting very odd. And everbody lives happily ever after!!
The Best In The Series.......2006-03-17
This is the final vol. of Ultra Maniac and of course they save the best for last. Nina goes to the Magic Kingdom to study and leaves all her friends behind. But the ending is terrific! The bonus story I considor should be part of the book itself, it shows what happens in three years after Nina graduates> Overall a very good book!

Book Description
A gay Erma Bombeck meets A Girl Named Zippy in this delightful debut about the misadventures of a woman of size. Cheryl Peck has stories to tell-about her cats, about her family, and about what it's like to be a gay woman of size living in the heartland. There's the story of the time she hit her kid sister in the head with a rock. Then there's the time her father gave her swimming lessons-by throwing her into the water. When she came shrieking and spluttering to the surface, he said, 'Good-she can swim.' There are the reasons 300 pound Cheryl has become an inspirational goddess in her gym. There are universal stories about a daughter's love for her mother and father. Cheryl Peck unfolds all these stories with a healthy sense of humor and intelligent wit in a book that reads like fiction and explores the themes of family, growing up, love, and loss. The stories in this collection are about seemingly unremarkable events that make a life-but like fat girls sitting on lawn chairs, these are events that don't let go.

Boooooooooring.......2007-01-04
While this book is not an utter garbage, there's nothing remarkable about it either, at least in my opinion. There's a certain wit and charm to "Fat Girls...", but that in itself doesn't save it from being mediocre. Even though miss Peck says that she's not a professional writer, by any means, it still feels as if though you need be a part of her family in order to enjoy this book. There's no humor in here, despite whatever reviews are saying - its just a number of observations on life, good ones at that, but I was looking for something else.
Bonus points for an excellent books cover.
OMG this book is SO hilarious!.......2006-07-20
Be prepared to be unable to stop laughing! The title story was my favorite, tied with "Litter String" (which is one of several stories written from the POV of Babycakes the cat). I can't wait to read more by this fantastic writer!
One of the worst books I have ever read.......2006-03-27
This book is awful. There is just no excuse for it. This collection of short memoirs are banal, tedious and utterly witless. Peck's only qualifications as a writer is the fact that she is female, over fifty, overweight and gay. Her memoirs are so insipid that finishing this book was incredibly difficult. Reading her memories about her grandparent's cows and how she is unable to pee in the woods made me roll my eyes. When she wrote about her cat, Babycakes, she made it sound as if her cat is ingenious and inovative to do all of these things which cats do naturally (her cat likes string? Really? Wow. . .). I kept waiting for this book to become the fascinating, utterly hilarious, insightful, witty literary achievement that all the other reviews claimed that it was. Needless to say, that never happened. I plan on giving this book to someone that I don't like very much.
Delightful!.......2005-08-26
A humorous, tongue-in-cheek look at life as a "woman of size." Deliciously entertaining!
Love the book cover..........2005-08-10
...and I suppose that's what I get for judging it by its cover. I expected the book to be funny bordering on side-splitting since Peck has been compared to Erma Bombeck. But where Bombeck was hilariously wise and self-deprecating without groveling, it's hard to believe Peck is in her 50s. While reading I kept picturing a kid with a copy of "Increase Your Vocabulary Overnight!" trying too hard to be funny -- her writing is often irritatingly choppy and even worse, contrived.
Apparently the book was originally written just for the amusement of family and friends, and perhaps I am being unfair by virtue of my own high expectations. But more often than not, Peck's stories fall flat into that stale silence immediately following what *you* thought was funny, yet wind up red-faced and mumbling, "Well, guess you had to be there..."

Birdcage's screenplay has a couple scenes that are written differently than in the movie--but reading them is just as funny as watching the movie itself. The written structure is wonderful.

Book Description
Devious secret agents, subtle alien invasions, ancient conspiracies, the secret of human nature, drooling psychopaths, weird science, a quick but painful death -- who knows what you may find when you play Over the Edge? For the first time, the surreal undercurrents of fiction, cinema, and television have come to roleplaying, and Over the Edge is the game that can take you where you've never been before.
Over the Edge Features:
Freeform Character Creation: Define your character the way you want to, without the limits of skill lists, random rolls, and artificial limitations. The rules favor character development over mechanics.
Open Setting: Anything goes on the chaotic island of Al Amarja. If it troubles your dreams, if it scares you, if you hope it isn't true, it's waiting for you Over the Edge. Players can never be sure what they're up against, who is on their side, and why.
Focus on the Story: Easy, open-ended mechanics allow you to spend more time developing your character and your plots, instead of crunching numbers. The GM's chapters include numerous story ideas and plenty advice for better gamemastering.
Easy To Get Started: Three beginning adventures introduce the GM and players to the wild world of Al Amarja and make the first sessions easy to run.
New in the Second Edition:
The mother of all charts: what each Al Amarjan conspiracy thinks of all the other ones.
Updated references include all supplements published before this edition.
Plus Improved layout and graphic appearance.
Customer Reviews:
Better than the first edition........2006-11-11
In very brief...the core book for the Over The Edge game is great. The first edition was wonderful but was vexed with spelling errors, badly done maps, and some amature illustrations. The second edition kept all the good stuff, improved the mistakes, and even added some things. It connects more cleanly with all the other books in this series by referencing them. You can get by with a first edition but just upgrade a little and buy this book.
Unleash Yourself.......2003-04-30
Freedom... That's what I'm talking about.
I started playing Over the Edge with its first edition. My game group and I were tired of character classes, of prefab dungeon crawls and the typical nonsense associated with the roleplaying hobby. About that time, we were also getting heavily into Philip K. Dick (We Can Remember it for you Wholesale), David Lynch (Eraserhead), William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch) and David Cronenberg (Videodrome). We wanted a game to reflect these diverse interests; we wanted something New and Different.
We played Over the Edge. At the time, the adventure was a terribly bizzare Lynch meets Clive Barker by way of Jacob's Ladder affair.
Each time I have played this game, it has been different -- mood and style. If you can imagine it, you can do it. The setting is fantastically interesting (welcome to Interzone, for all you Burroughs fans), the mechanics are a dream of streamlined, and there are no predetermined character races, classes, whatever. If you can imagine it, you can do it.
To this day, I run OTE -- now adapted into an email game, since my group has scattered across the continent.
In short, if you need charts to have fun. If you need someone else to set limits on your creativity (be it modules or character generation guidelines) then move along. There's a game called Rolemaster with your name on it.
If you want absolute freedom and unrestrained creativity in your gaming session, this is the game for you.
For me, OTE remains the standard by which all other game systems are judged.
Playground of desire.......2002-12-28
This is one of the great role - playing games: what else could one expect from johnathan tweet? (you know, the fellow who did 3D&D). Its choice of setting - a corrupt island - state in the mediterrainian is inspired: the various shady expatriates who gather in such places can create all kinds of strange trouble. Especially when some of them come from lost civilizations and other worlds.
This is NOT an illuminati conspiracy - theory spoof: the setting has strong internal consistency, and is derived from a more specific area of litterature than one would think from its open - ended nature: where beatnik and science fiction meet, giving birth to authors such as William Burroughs or Philip K. Dick. It has the kind of mythology suited to spies, drug addicts, the perverted, and space ghosts.
Oh, and the system actually tells you to make whatever character you like. Dont worry though, it still uses hit points.
Simple rules, inspiring mood... what more to ask?.......2001-03-09
This game has achieved something of a cult status, and quite rightfully so. First of all, the rules system is a beauty - very simple, elegant, and innovative. Second, the laid-back, surreal mood is achieved superbly - strange conspiracies, inexplicable events, other dimensions - whatever suits your fancy. At the same time, I have to admit, that I was more impressed with the mood rather than the actual setting - an English-speaking island in the middle of the Mediterranean just somehow didn't sound plausible(!) enough. But then again, I'm European.

Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking
ASIN: 1591840929 |
Book Description
As VP of marketing at online retailer Half.com, Mark Hughes didn't have a huge budget for advertising. Yet he helped drive the number of Half.com users from zero to eight million in just three years. His secret? Making the company a magnet for media attention and word-of-mouth, by any means necessary. Most notoriously, he persuaded the town of Halfway, Oregon, to rename itself Half.comcalled one of the greatest publicity coups in history by Time.
In this breakthrough book, Hughes offers a practical guide to the art of successful buzz marketingwhich many people talk about these days but few truly understand. He draws on real-world examples of companies that got people to talk about their stuff from Miller Lite during the Tastes GreatLess Filling era, to American Idol's stunning use of buzz to become a global phenomenon, to current companies that find creative ways to break through the ad-glutted marketplace.
Buzzmarketing explores the six secrets of great word-of-mouth campaigns and shows how any company can thrive by pursuing a buzz-driven strategy rather than just hoping for a lucky break. Readers who have enjoyed books like The Tipping Point and Purple Cow will find Buzzmarketing to be the ideal guide to applying buzz to their real-world business needs.
Customer Reviews:
Get People to Talk.......2007-09-19
This was a very good book and his experiences with Half.com is particularly interesting in terms of wild marketing ideas. I would say the best book I've read on buzzmarketing that really develops how to get people to talk about your stuff in terms of real conversations and building meaning instead of buzz, is Lois Kelly's "Beyond Buzz: The Next Generation of Word-Of-Mouth Marketing". Superb, published this year and Kelly is a leader in this arena.Beyond Buzz: The Next Generation of Word-of-Mouth Marketing
Worth a read.......2007-09-16
Interesting read. Easy to follow with anecdotes as examples. It breaks down the 6 steps in to manageable chunks but could be a little more concise.
A Keeper and a Favorite Amongst "Viral Marketing" Type Books.......2007-06-08
This is a solid, well written favorite amongst the "viral marketing" class of marketing books. I have re-read this twice and enjoy the easy read packed with worthwhile info.
The author shows you how to get results from your marketing, tells you about what he calls the "six secrets" of Buzzmarketing that contains useful, "what to do" information along with really entertaining examples to illustrate the point.
---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
1. it's an entertaining read, and contains solid, useful, "how to" info.
2. If you only buy books you want to re-read, then this is a definite keeper.
2. I rank this amongst "The Tipping Point" and "Unleashing the Ideavirus" as a favorite book on "Viral Marketing". (I rank this 3rd)
More concepts, less "tips".......2007-06-01
Instead of being a book of tips, this book is conceptual & offers many examples to illustrate. You can apply it in a number of fields and even has some examples from the music industry.
Cut through marketing clutter and jaded attitudes.......2007-04-03
Mark Hughes has written a candid assessment of the limitations of conventional marketing had offers ways to compensate for them. He argues that increasing marketing clutter and decreasing impact of established modes of marketing communications decreases the cost-effectiveness of conventional marketing methods. Compelling and accurate benefit messages and getting attention are both critical to success. However, the current challenging environment makes getting heard the factor that needs the most attention.
Buzz marketing differs from traditional marketing in these respects.
* Traditional marketing tries to communicate directly with potential purchasers, so it needs high "reach". High "frequency" is needed to compensate for low impact and credibility of messages. Achieving high reach and frequency trhough conventional marketing media (which are very cluttered with low-quality messages) costs too much for all marketers except well established large and profitable companies.
* Buzz marketing means word of mouth among customers and their associates. Buzz Marketing motivates primary listeners to repeat a story that generates awareness and reaction in a wider population. The content must provide listeners with incentive to repeat the message, such as entertainment value or shock value. Therefore "reach" can be lower. Ideally, the message should be personalized to evoke a response from the listener in one "touch" so that frequency can be lower. Reducing reach and frequency requirements and circumventing conventional high-cost media all increase cost effectiveness of marketing.
Much of the book is devoted to six approaches to effective buzz marketing (1 motivate the audience to listen and to repeat the message; 2 motivate news media to increase coverage; 3 find media with high mindshare and low clutter; 4 & 5 take measured risks with unorthodox and creative approaches to obtain breakthrough results; 6 ensure product quality); and to over a dozen case studies.
