Book Description
"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot," Joni Mitchell sang in the early 1970s. She couldn't have known it was only the beginning of an era of dwindling green space, McMansions, and the homogenization of American cities. In James Bretz's Mansions of Denver, the charm and history of Denver's architectural past is carefully and beautifully drawn. His book provides readers with insight into the city's youth. But it is also a lament - an homage to a time when architectural originality prevailed.
There are more than 80 mansions profiled and each history is replete with stunning photographs - exteriors turreted and exquisitely detailed; interiors bedecked with crystal chandeliers, Grecian columns, and elaborate wood etchings and Tiffany stained glass. However, the stories in Mansions of Denver are just as much about the structures as it is a social history. Within these pages are the colorful characters whose wealth afforded them whimsy and tremendous creativity in designing their homes; families, whose fluctuating fortunes sometimes signaled the demise of their elaborate mansions, and changed the face of Denver's neighborhoods.
Mansions of Denver is a reading tour through Denver's history. It's a devastating comment on the great architectural losses the city has suffered, but it also offers hope and recognition of the preservation efforts. Bretz highlights a handful of notable survivors - impetus, at the close of the book, to put on your walking shoes and get out to explore the giants still standing.

Great history and architecture!.......2007-01-11
"The Mansions of Denver" is a must for anyone interested in the history of Denver and Denver's prominent families during the "gilded-age." There are plenty of photos of the mansions of Denver, both those that are still standing as well as those lost to the greed of fools with no sense of historic preservation.
What we've been waiting for........2006-05-07
This is the book many of us have been waiting for. I, and many of my friends, have wondered about the history of downtown Denver, especially Captiol Hill, and particularly about the Victorian mansions in the neighborhood that we heard had been torn down years ago. Not many people we talked to had any information. This book has it all. It covers all the big houses and major names in the development of early Denver. It tells how fortunes were made and lost, and what happened to the many mansions that were built with money from mining, oil, real estate, and ranching. While some of these gems survive, most notably the Governor's Mansion and the nearby Grant/Humphreys mansion, hundreds were lost to urban renewal in the 1960s and 70s. While Bretz laments their losses, he gives us a glimmer of hope that those that have survived will be with us a long, long time.
MILE HIGH MANSIONS.......2006-04-20
Denver is blessed with an abudence of Gilded Age gradeur and this book does a fine job of focusing on the best of these. The images are crisp and clean and the text is very enlighening. It is a shame that some of these homes have been lost, but having said that, Denver should be proud that so many are extant. Highly recommended to anyone interested in Denver or just fine residential architecture in general.
Book Description
In the late 19th century, women wore bustles, corsets, and ankle-length petticoats under skirts that swept the ground. By the 1930s, some of the same women were wearing trousers, short skirts, and simple draped dresses. Nowhere is this extraordinary transition more beautifully and extensively documented than in the wardrobe of Queen Maud of Norway, the granddaughter of England's Queen Victoria. One of the best-dressed women of her age, she took every opportunity to indulge her passion for clothes.
Style and Splendour showcases some of Queen Maud's most spectacular garments. Using photographs of her magnificent clothes and accessories, most made by the foremost designers of her day and now preserved in Oslo, the book tells the story of the evolution of women's fashion from the 1890s to the 1930s. AUTHOR BIO: Anne Kjellberg is curator of Queen Maud's collection at the National Museum of Art/Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo. Susan North is curator in the Department of Furniture, Textiles and Dress at the V&A and author of Historical Fashion in Detail.

beautiful images.......2007-06-25
Beautiful book. Beautiful images. I wanted MORE images but that's just me.
Cool to see some other designers works besides the greats like Dior and Balenciaga. There are a few outfits that really take my breath away. If it had more images I would have given it 5 stars! but it really is a 5 star book for most people.
Queen Maud as costumer's resource.......2007-04-05
This book is excellent for costuming ideas. It has large, sharp pictures that show the details on the dresses beautifully.
A Queen's Closet.......2006-01-22
All of the books on historical fashion published by the Victoria & Albert Museum are beautiful, and this is no exception. I saw this exhibition while I was in London this summer and I was pleasantly surprised at liking the book because I always assumed that publications wouldn't be able to measure up to seeing the garments in person. Instead I found that the book gives me a chance to appreciate each beautiful garment at my leisure, and read the history about Queen Maud (which gives a context and feeling of `realness' to the clothing). The book features Edwardian coronation gowns (literally, Maud wore one for the coronation of Edward VII, her father), sportswear (riding gowns etc.), and dresses and suits through the late 30's all beautifully photographed and described.

Humdinging Funny.......2007-02-17
I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.
The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.
Camp Foxtrot. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-20
I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.
Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.
If you like to read FoxTrot, then check this box [ ]!.......2007-01-08
Who will like this book? All Foxtrot fans (even the finicky ones)!
Round up the usual suspects:
Jason: always living to the fullest of his 180 IQ, interest in computers, and irritating Page.
Page: will she ever get a boyfriend? Isn't she happy that Jason goes to summer camp?
Peter: his appetite will always exceed his interest in sports, but not by much.
Andy: are there any tofu recipes she DOESN'T know?
Roger: even with his golf and chess game, caffeine can't fix everything.
Camp FoxTrot is a fat collection of your favorite comics...250 pages worth. You will not read it all at one setting!
Foxtrot Mania.......2006-09-09
This book was the first Foxtrot book I ever got, the second was "Beyond A Doubt", and Jason and Marcus in this one are your typical geeky guys who think girls have cooties. At a sleep-away camp they go to for the summer there are 2 girls who do there best to out-do them in every way. This, of course, leads to hilarious situations. Anyone pondering the thought of buying a Foxtrot book. This one is the way to go. Of course, they're all great!
I LOVE IT!.......2006-07-24
I never really read foxtrot before, and my parents got it for me on my 13th Birthday. I did'nt know why got it for me, because I never talked about liking it. But I read it, AND I LOVE IT! It is now one of my faverite comic stips EVER!
This Book is great, it is extremely funny. This book is two foxtrot books in one. It includes foxtrot books "Come Closer Roger There's a Mosquito on Your Nose", and "Welcome to Jasorassic Park". I think it is great. You should definetly buy it.

Book Description
Philo T. Farnsworth is not a household word despite the fact that he invented something found in most every household: television. Farnsworth is just one of hundreds of subjects in this hefty comic compendium that plumbs the depths in a survey of great lives. Readers also learn about T’sai Lun, the Chinese eunuch who invented paper — and by extension, toilet paper. Other clever unknowns include the inventors of Velcro, Bakelite, and the microwave oven. Of course, not all of the “great lives” here are anonymous. The “Fun with Heretics” section includes Thomas Paine and Rousseau, revealing some unexpected peculiarities. Liberace, Pancho Villa, and Freud happily coexist in this sometimes raunchy romp. Among the topics? “Philosophers Who Got Killed,” “Child Geniuses” (and its evil twin, “High School Dropouts”), and much more.

A very good book.......2003-08-12
This is an above average volume in a overall good series. I enjoy historical trivia and have several other books like this one. But this book still managed to have dozens of interesting biographical anecdotes I hadn't read before.

Outstanding research!.......2005-04-14
Beyond Michael Short, there are few in-depth biographies of Holst. This is one of those biographies containing a wealth of detail that complements the Short. Extended section on Holst's American excursions. A most welcome volume for anyone interested in Holst.
This is one of those examples of don't judge a book by its cover. The content and scholarship are first rate! Highly recommended.

Book Description
This definitive biography of Gustav Holst (1874-1934), written by Holst's daughter, draws on personal reminiscences and Holst's letters to such friends as Ralph Vaughan Williams to provide an intimate and revealing account of the great English musician's life and work. Composer of the
immensely popular Planets and leader with Vaughan Williams of the early twentieth-century renaissance in English music, Holst spent his life struggling against ill health and depression. Yet he did so with a remarkable and good-humored resilience that enabled him to produce some of the century's
best-loved music. This paperback edition includes a new introduction, new illustrations, and a list of Holst's works.

Book Description
Gustav Holst's "Planets" suite has become established as one of the classics of twentieth-century orchestral music. Short's access to Holst's letters and diaries, as well as his close work with Holst's daughter Imogen have resulted in the most detailed book on the composer's life and music yet
to appear. Containing new information which has become available since Imogen Holst published a biography of her father fifty years ago, this book includes an analysis of Holst's musical style and a substantial reference section.
Customer Reviews:
The definitve book on Holst (in addition to Imogen Holst's books).......2007-07-29
This long-time-out-of-print book is clearly the definitive book on Gustav Holst, his life and the undercurrents of his music. Holst was a character of enigmatic dichotomy: he was at once friendly, greragious, jolly and rumbustious - but at the same time solitary, remote and seemingly aloof. He was concerned with the warmth of human relationships, but with mystical speculations as well. His thought and music could be simultaneously simple AND complex. He was a straightforward schoolmaster and a restless, introspective artist at the same time.
Many of his friends noticed the contrast between his vigorous and outgoing nature and his other-worldliness: as if he had acess to SOME SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNIVERSE, which they had not. And of such mystery is his music, he is one of the most important composers of the first half of the 20th century and it is a shame, that of his marvellous works only "The Planets", "The Hymn of Jesus" and the "St. Pauls's Suite" are more widely known, despite the fact, that his entire oevre has been marvelously recorded on CD (check Chandos.com for more on this).
As Ralph Vaughan-Williams one put it, it is "the blend of the realist with the visionary, that gives Holst's music its distinctive character", and this clearly mirrors in Holst's life, for instance in his interest in the Socialist music movement at the turn of the century and simultaneously his private studies of Sanskrit and of Vedic scriptures.
Why this book has been out of print for almost twenty years (since 1990 to be exact) is a complete mystery to me! After a meticulous search for this book in more or less all used bookstores I was able to contact - either online or in real life - I was finally able to abtain a copy of this book from a Manchester bookstore.
.. and I haven't had any reason to regret my purchase. No buyer's remorse at all.
Strongly recommended for each and everyone interested in Holst's life and work.
Exceptional Holst biography!.......2005-04-11
Holst was a gentle soul of rare talent and accomplishment. Exceptionaly well researched and well written biography. This is THE standard Holst biography. Why this is out of print is a complete mystery. May be available at your local library -- if you're lucky. I was and read it. I would very much like to obtain a copy. So, whoever has rights to publishing this work, perhaps another printing or a new edition is in order? Where else is one to go for a thorough Holst biography? Highly recommended.

The perfect book for anyone who enjoys playing cards, either alone or with others. It includes 150 different solitaire games, along with puzzlers, ESP tests, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of material, but not too well organized........2002-01-02
This is a perfect book for the solitaire fanatic who wants some new challenges. It is not the book for someone who wants to quickly find a solitaire game with a specific flavor, degree of difficulty or age recommendation.
The book is one long list of games. The games seem to be organized by similarities in play. A particular game is introduced and then the next few games are modifications thereof. Unfortunately, there is no grouping of games beyond this. No chapters, no synopsis of the games. A look at the first few pages on this site will give you the complete flavor of the book.
So if you want to dive in and play them all, this is a great book. Otherwise, it can be frustrating.

Despite the single letter at the heart of its hyphenated title, The E-Myth Contractor isn't another book about e-commerce. Instead, like previous entries in Michael E. Gerber's popular series, it focuses on a different e-word--entrepreneur--and the fact that most of us who go into business for ourselves are doomed to fail because we really don't understand business. This time, Gerber lays out the basics for starry-eyed newly self-employed contractors who know everything about their trade but precious little about being a boss. "I don't try to tell you how to do the work you do," he writes at the outset. "Rather, I share with you some profound insights into how great businesspeople think." In his easy-to-understand manner, Gerber explains the concept of Strategic Thinking and how it "will enable you to create a business that works apart from you instead of because of you." He addresses key topics like money, people, management and growth with an eye toward making related functions run seamlessly and effectively as we build our independent enterprises into true companies that have inherent value whether we stay involved or ultimately hand them off to eager buyers. Taken to heart, it could save more than a few worthy ventures as well as the people behind them. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
With The E–Myth Contractor, Michael E. Gerber launches a series of books that apply the E–Myth to specific types of small businesses. The first is aimed at contractors.
This book reveals a radical new mind–set that will free contractors from the tyranny of an unprofitable, unproductive routine. With specific tips on topics as crucial as planning, money and personnel management, The E–Myth Contractor teaches readers how to:
•Implement the ingenious turnkey system of management – a means of creating a business prototype that reflects the business owner's unique set of talents and replicating and distributing them among employees and customers.
•Recognise and manage the four forms of money – income, profit, flow and equity.
•Harness the power of change to expand the company.
The book also provides help on a larger level, leading readers towards becoming business visionaries by relinquishing tactical work and embracing strategic work, by letting go to gain control. Once put into action, Gerber's revolutionary ideas promise not only to help contractors build successful businesses, but successful lives as well.
Customer Reviews:
Grade School Lessons & E-Myth Acadamy Advertisement .......2007-10-04
This is, at best the beginning part of a working business solution. Yes, Gerber makes a valid point about the E-myth concept (read other reviews if you don't know the concept) but it's really for beginners (newbs). All his books are really just advertisements, for his E-Myth Academy consulting business in the back of all his books. There is nearly no practical information. He makes his point about the E-Myth, then masterbates it endlesly, re-making that point six ways to Sunday, add nausium and leaves you wondering, well, but what should I do? Well, little lost lamb (newb), go to E-Myth web site or call the 800 number where they have a fast talking sales crew and sign up for 2 years of 700 plus a month (I haven't checked lately) consultation/classes.
After you get the point that to make your technical skill pay/function as a business you need to have business skills/know how. You can sign up for the 700 plus per month for 2 years advertised in the back of his books. Start looking elsewhere for actual practical information. Because there are no E-myth books or tapes that have that information. You can do a lot for your business with that kind of money. I'm always shocked at how newbs starting businesses throw money around. Something to buy and a place to buy it, no matter how pretty it all is, doesn't make a successful business, In my observations, it's the major reason new businesses fail. I'm sure some of you with deep pockets or You corperate types who have never had to find the guts or earn the money to build a small business without Sugar Daddy Warbucks help will think I'm wrong. This E-Myth stuff is valid but it it's grade school lessons made to look like some kind of super-profound truth/solution. Well, it is, grade school true, now what Mr. Gerber, where's the solutions, spend, what, nearly 17,000 Sign up for what I thought I was getting when I bought the Books and tapes? What a greedy little tight wad! When are you going to write a book with substance? Hey Newbs! Trust me, yes you need real business skills, there are plenty of great business books out there, take some of that 17,000 and buy some and be careful with the rest you're going to need it.
Excellent small business framework.......2007-07-23
Michael Gerber does a very good job outlining a basic approach to small business development. His approach may give some readers an enlightened perspective on their current small business dilemas. He has an insightful understanding of how typical contractors think and the challenges we all deal with everyday. This book won't solve your problems - you have to do that - but it will give you the basic groundwork needed to change the way you think about your business and how you run it.
Quick read explaining importance of CashFlow for business owners........2007-07-12
This is another in the series of E-myth books. While focused on (building) contractors, it is very applicable for any business owner. It breaks down the different ways to look at money related to business. A quick read, especially if you have read the e-myth Revisited. I usually go purchase a bunch for each new client to get them on the same page of understanding that running your business by the checkbook or float is a recipe for disaster. I recommend reading this after e-myth revisited and before e-myth mastery.
Awesome.......2007-03-14
Absolutley essential book. He shares some great business ideas that you might have otherwise overlooked.
Not worth the time or money.......2007-02-04
This book repeats a few of the strategies presented in "The E-Myth Revisted", trying to point them at the contractor. Unfortunately, except for a couple of good ideas from that book, there is nothing here but fluff and pep talk. At one point, I think you can actually tell where material was cut-and-pasted from the sister book about medical practices, where they accidentally forgot to change "practice" to "contracting business".
If you found some chapters of the "The E-Myth Revisted" to be a bit fluffy for you, you can count on an entire (although short) book of it here. Very dissapointing and not particularly useful.
