really good artwork.......2006-07-26
This is the first book i got of 'the new generation of manga artists' and its very good. Ive heard of the omnbibus collection before and im sure that this is not all of it. A couple years ago there was another art book like this and it was very hard to get a hold of. Thats why im pleased that they came out with this book. The pictures in here are colorful and creative. They are a great reference and are very inspirational. There are alot of books in this series and i would say that this is one of the best. One of the reasons for this is since there are more than one artists work in here. Most of the pictures are of women, and some of the clothing and posses are skimpy. In fact most of them are lol. But still a great collection to have.
Diversity is nice.......2005-12-05
This is a nice book. Being that it's by 15 different manga artists, it's a little difficult to rate it. Some styles I love while others I dislike. The book features mostly female characters. I dislike the skimy clothing or accentuated proportions on some of the characters. Some pictures are really beautifully done. Themes are feudal era, futuristic, present day, and fantasy. I think anime and manga fans will be pleased with this book. (If I disliked it I wouldn't have bought it.)
Awesome Art.......2004-04-14
I totally love this book. I really recomed this book for anime or manga fans. If anyone wants it keep trying it's worth it!!!!!!!

Not up to expectations.......2007-07-21
I am a huge fan of WNTW and I am really dissapointed in this book. Trinny and Susannah are the only models and the advice isn't very realistic. The only thing that makes this (maybe) worth the money is the color chapter which shows which colors go with which.
I was slightly offended by the constant knocking of black and wearing black with color. Who doesn't? Maybe in England they don't.
If you want help matching things (but not with black) buy this. If not, try Stacy London and Clinton Kelly's book or the Lucky fashion manual. Much more helpful tips and useful info.
Indispensable.......2007-07-06
How sad am I to see Amazon may not continue carrying this book. So very sad.
I got this after a friend raved about the color chart in it. I thought there was just one chart. In fact, there is one for every color-and the variations within it. Don't know what to pair with those bubblegum pink pants you bought? Turn to page 86 and see that purple, orange and forest green all can be successfully combined with them. Pistachio green? See page 72. And so on for pretty much everything in your wardrobe OR for items that you've thought of buying but weren't sure what to pair them with. Plus the authors themselves take turns posing in every color family and give some great suggestions. There's literally something you'll use on every page.
But there's more. Find out what type of shoes, belts and jewelry work best for you, how to store clothes and accessories (I'm definitely taking their advice on necklaces and scarves), tips on all steps in the makeup process (and sorry ladies, but I'm not throwing out my bronzer) and how to hide all manners of figure flaws. For the flaws segment, the authors themselves once again bravely model so it's impossible to take offense. Throughout, Trinny and Susannah display more wit, charm and warmth than you might expect from a fasion how-to book. I can't emphasize enough how helpful they've been. I have the book from the American version of the show as well and while it too is very helpful, this one is my favorite.
The only complaint is some of the information might be a bit too geared towards women with fair skin and hair (as both the writers have.) The friend who recommended it to me is African-American and while she swears by the color charts, she says some of the advice simply doesn't work for her. Since the authors are the only models provided, this can be limiting if you are trying to imagine a look on darker skin and/or hair. So do keep that in mind. (Having said that, my friend still loves the book)
What you wear can change your life.......2007-05-07
This book was a great help in helping me update my wardrobe to look better in what I wear.
Good book to have..........2007-05-07
Very Clear and has great insight on what you should be wearing.
Really down to earth and enjoyable read.......2007-03-17
This book doesn't tell you what to wear. It tells you what not to wear and gives you the confidence to realize what you should be wearing. I expected a clear cut, "if your body is this shape, this size and you're this height you look good in, such and such and such and such" but no, it just gives you ideas not specific wardrobe assignments. And yes, what you wear CAN change your life, for the good or for the bad don't forget it goes both ways.

Book Description
This epic story of Sherman, Dorothy, Ed, Stephen, Jane, and Mr. Flavor is not to be missed. Alex Robinson's completely natural and inspiring knack for dialogue has made his story of dreary jobs, comic books, love, sex, messy apartments, girlfriends (and the lack thereof), undisclosed pasts, and crusty old professionals one of the most delightful and whimsical graphic novels to hit the stands in years.
Customer Reviews:
This is as good a time as I've had..........2007-05-13
reading an original graphic novel. I love every one of the 602pgs of this book.
thank you, Alex Robinson.
Lacking feeling........2007-01-14
There is something wrong with this book. There are many characters that should be interesting, who have interesting situations and back-stories, but they act like paper cut-outs. This book is boring. There is no spark in it, no life or soul or whatever you might call it. Everything in this book just generally falls flat, in my humble opinion.
Friends + Irving Flavor.......2006-04-06
A bunch of recent arts college graduates in NYC: their ups, their downs, tears and laughter. That sums up the weaknesses of this book, which sometimes swings into soap-opera land, but only sometimes.
The great strength of the book is the Irving Flavor character, a grumpy old comic book artist who draw the NightStalker, then got shafted. There's some great nuances to his character, and a wonderful section about his attendance at a comic convention.
I'd liked the experiments with story-telling styles, with disorganized panels, overlapping dialogue, and out-of sync visuals.
Post-College Life in NYC.......2006-03-18
As much as I hate to admit it, Box Office Poison gives a pretty good idea of what an English Major such as myself is trained to do if he or she does not enter into finance, teaching, or paralegalling (before law school), although I do awknowledge how broad a base that is.
What makes this comic so striking is its blend of real-life story-telling and quirky anecdotes, the type you see in a good comedy on television. Sherman, armed with his English degree from Hunter and a desire to become a writer is stuck working in the same job he had as a sophomore in college - salesperson at a bookstore. His was the storyline I enjoyed most as it most closely resembles mine. The cast is wonderfully diverse and the storylines are so well-balanced that you don't learn who the quote-unquote default narrator is till the very end in the epilogue (I really should have guessd earlier, but I'll let you guess when you read it). There's something so human about the way Robinson portrays his characters, both in their speech and in their visual representation. His art style certsainly suits the stark representation of his characters' encounters.
The pacing of the story is also well-done, with Robinson choosing to ask the same question to his characters like the opening credits of a TV show such as 'which fictional character would you most like to meet' (that was one of the questions, but I'm not sure of the wording on it so don't quote me). The varying responses highlight how different each of the characters is.
Overall, there are very few comic creators right now who could challenge Robinson right now. The only ones that come to my mind (creators working within the same genre of real-life comic storytelling) are Derek Kirk Kim and Adrian Tomine, two other wonderfully gifted creators.
If you buy Box Office Poison, I promise you, you won't be disappointed.
Story has been written/drawn before.......2006-01-31
I guess the basis of my dissatisfaction with the novel itself was not so much the drawing, text, and story (but then I suppose, is there anything else?) but the way the back cover blurb sold it as one of the most original depictions of post-college life in New York.
I didn't dislike "Box Office Poison," but its similarities to the Minimum Wage series (collected in "Beg the Question") are pretty striking: skinny comic book artists with butchy girlfriends, the undersexed comic book geek friend, a comic book convention with the usual assortment of weirdos and socially inept.
On the upside, I do think that the character of Irving Flavor--a has-been comic old-timer artist attempting to reclaim his glory days in the corporate superhero publising industry--was beautifully developed and complicated, and only wish that I had read less of Sherman and Dorothy.
If you're looking for gritty, slightly more ugly and idiosyncratic, then go with "Beg the Question." A slightly more sanitized version falls under the title of "Box Office Poison."

Meeting Old Friends.......2004-01-05
Alex Robinson's massive graphic novel _Box Office Poison_ is one of my favorite graphic novels. The characters within its black and white pags breathe realism. In this day and age of spandex clad super heros and scantily clad heroines, _BOP_ offers the reader a breath of fresh air as he or she follows the lives of the disgruntled book store employee Sherman and the want to be comic book artist Ed and the vast assortment of their friends and enemies. This slim vol titled _BOP!: More Box Office Poison_ is a collection of stories that were not included in the 600+ page Top Shelf Collection and a few recent stories concerning the characters such as Mr. Robinson's 24 hour comic depicting Caprice and her boyfriend Kevin. For the most part this book fleshes out the first book the reader gets to meet Stephen's ex-girlfriend Darlene, the only significant girlfriend he had before beginning his long term relationship with Jane, gets to see Caprice and Jane's high school years, and get to see Sherman not only fight to remain outside the corporate world, but to see how his geeky min wishes that his relationship with Dorothy could be a little different. My favorite story within the collection is "My Old Flame, or Ex-Man" which depicts a future meeting between an older Sherman and his ex Sally. It is interesting to see how their recollections of the meeting differ. An excellent little book, read it please.

A fascinating collection of stories.......2002-02-09
A fantastic book! I bought this for one of my sons for Christmas, along with several other more print-oriented books. I'm not a diehard fan of books in comic format, but as I reviewed this upon arrival I was delighted to discover the depth of information provided. The wide variety of characters, the great expanse of historical periods covered and the different "genres" of loser subjects proved much more entertaining than I expected when I bought this book. Consider this one of the classier bathroom readers for the entire family!
Can't Win 'Em All.......2000-06-22
"The Big Book of Losers" is the ninth in the Big Book series from Paradox Press. This volume tells you about historically bad luck, from General Custer to the Edsel to Milli Vanilli. Reading this book, you can't lose! Just be glad you're not them!
A bit mean but funny anyhow.......1997-03-25
I went to my local comics shop and saw the owner reading The Big Book of Losers. I asked to look at it, and I then know I must have it. The book is full of entertaining stories of people and bad ideas that were failures. It's quite entertaining reading the stories of people like the Dalton Gang, and Milli Vanilli, who deserve to be called losers. Unfortunately, some the people written about did not have the loser essence, but merely had some bad luck, or were held back by people who were more powerful and who were evil. These ones were not so funny. Overall, though, it is a good book, and worth reading
Book Description
The story of Soviet film in the period covered by Peter Kenez is central to the history of world cinema. The author explores the roots of Soviet cinema in the film heritage of pre-Revolutionary Russia; the changes in content, style, technical means, and production capacities generated by the Revolution of 1917; the constraints on form and subject imposed from the 1930s in the name of Socialist Realism; the relative freedom of expression accorded to film-makers during World War Two; and the extraordinary repression during the final years of the Stalin era.
Customer Reviews:
An Essential Book on Soviet Cinema.......2002-08-05
Anyone who wants to understand the movies of the Soviet Union should start with this book. It is very thorough and written in a lively, bright style that is free of academic jargon.
Kenez begins with the pre-Revolutionary film industry and shows how it broke down and was built back up by the Soviets. He pays equal attention to the "high art" films that were famous in the West for decades (those of Eisenstein and Pudovkin) and the entertainment films that attracted the average Soviet citizen (such as the musical comedies of the 1930s, like "Volga-Volga.") He shows how Soviet movies responded to the imposition of Socialist Realism, World War II, and the cultural freeze of the late Stalin era.
The only problem with this book is that it is TOO SHORT. Upon reaching the end, the reader wants to see Kenez tackle the films of the Khrushchev Thaw and the Brezhnev era. However, one should be thankful for what one has, and in this volume, one has a truly indispensible book.

Book Description
Whether decorating the grand halls for visiting dignitaries, transforming a room for a holiday, or simply gracing the private family quarters, flowers are an essential part of life in the White House. In Flowers, White House Style, former White House Chief Floral Decorator Dottie Temple reveals the secrets to these fabulous floral arrangements while offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. With more than 125 original and archival photographs, many seen here for the first time, Temple and her coauthor, Stan Finegold, guide us through the floral displays created for five presidential administrations, offering history and insight from the most famous house in the world.
Supplementing this rich memoir, renowned historian William Seale offers intriguing vignettes and little-known facts about White House floral history during the mansion's first 150 years. For example, in the 1840s, it was believed that fresh flowers absorbed all the oxygen in the air and they were banished to the outdoors. The flowers for the wedding of President Theodore Roosevelt's daughter Alice were very restrained; only jasmine and white orchids were used.
Walk through the White House florist shop, where thousands of flowers are delivered every day, and witness the planning and coordinating of each arrangement for important official events. Floral selections must be carefully made so they offend neither visitors nor the President. White flowers are never used for Japanese guests, because they are reserved for funerals in Japan. The favorite flowers of dignitaries are always remembered -- for example, anemones for former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain and roses for President Francois Mitterrand of France. These insights and more are revealed on every page of Flowers, White House Style.
Stunning photographs and step-by-step instructions will inspire all those who love flowers to recreate the more than forty detailed historic and contemporary arrangements in the book and bring the elegance of the White House into their homes.
Temple describes lavish floral centerpieces and impressive flower designs ranging from those created for numerous State Dinners and three White House weddings (Tricia Nixon; Lynda Bird Johnson and Luci Baines Johnson) to garlands and wreaths for spectacular White House Christmas celebrations. With ample ideas and tips on vases, flowers, and tools, Temple and Finegold make these beautifully artistic creations accessible to everyone. Whether you are a professional looking for inspiration or simply an enthusiast who loves the natural beauty of fresh blooms, Flowers, White House Style will be the book you'll turn to.
Filled with revealing anecdotes and behind-the-scenes information on the workings of the White House that only Dottie Temple can provide, Flowers, White House Style offers history, inspiration, and innovative ideas in a lush and exquisitely designed volume.
Customer Reviews:
THIS IS TERRIBLE book, NO SUBSTANCE! DO NOT BUY!.......2004-08-21
Unless you are an extemely avid flower collector, I can honestly say that this book would be a waste of anyone's money. I personally cannot think of a more trite, soulless, and uninspiring topic. An individual might find this book somewhat entertaining for the first five minutes, but then you start to see the redundancy and transparency of the floral layouts.
I would much rather buy a book the focuses on floral arrangements across the country, designed and cultivated by regular people. I don't like viewing or reading about floral designed created by people with who's concepts lacked all sense of ingenuity and charm. An unlimited budget and lack of motivation paved the way for these gaudy and self-serving floral arrangements.
Very Nice.......2003-06-22
For anyone interested in White House history, this book is a must! I have enjoyed reading it over and over.
Beautiful Book!.......2002-12-17
What a lovely book! It is a nice mix of flower arrangements and tips, photos of arrangements in the White House in recent times, and historical survey of flowers and their importance in the President's house. It is interesting to see the floral styles of each first lady. Those women actually exerted a strong hand in the "look" of the florals for their home on Pennsylvania Ave.
What a contrast of the Johnson girl's wedding with that of the Nixon daughter! Wow, talk about different styles, and they were not all that far apart in time!
There are beautiful watercolor illustrations as lead in to each chapter. They seem to be uncredited--at least, I would not find the artist's name after looking carefully. Like any other book these days, there are small factual errors. Tricia Nixon is referred to as the Nixon's youngest daughter (she is their eldest) and Allium Gigantium is called "tropical" (gee, it grows in my midwest garden surviving all winters.)
But those are small quibbles. Really, this is a lovely book and I enjoyed it!
Boffo!.......2002-10-18
I loved this book and even though I am not interested in learning how to arrange "stems" - this book is beautiful to look at and very interesting to read!
Very few folks get to have the job Dottie had and her insights and stories are super!
If you love the White House and it's history...add this book to your library! If you want to learn how to put together some of those famous White House arrangements - this book will show you how!
Much more than a "how to" book...filled with backstage stories and interesting info!
Thanks Dottie!
Book Description
Loyalty is by no means dead. In fact the principles of loyalty . . . are alive and well at the heart of every company with an enduring record of high productivity, solid profits, and steady expansion.
From The Loyalty Effect
The business world seems to have given up on loyalty: many major corporations now lose-and have to replace-half their customers in five years, half their employees in four, and half their investors in less than one. Fred Reichheld's national bestseller The Loyalty Effect shows why companies that ignore these skyrocketing defections face a dismal future of low growth, weak profits, and shortened life expectancy. Reichheld demonstrates the power of loyalty-based management as a highly profitable alternative to the economics of perpetual churn. He makes a powerful economic case for loyalty-and takes you through the numbers to prove it. His startling conclusion: Even a small improvement in customer retention can double profits in your company. The Loyalty Effect will change the way you think about loyalty, profits, and the nature of business.
Fred Reichheld is a Director Emeritus of Bain & Company and a Bain Fellow. He is also the author of Loyalty Rules!.
Download Description
Reichheld lays out a new "economics of loyalty" that provides a framework where the "soft" elements of business--loyalty and learning--can be effectively linked to the hard science of cash flows and cost/benefit analysis. Because of this connection, Reichheld argues, there is enormous potential for improving a company's performance by increasing customer, investor, and employee loyalty. Reichheld's research demonstrates that loyalty drives profits in direct and quantifiable ways through its impact on growth, learning, and productivity. In addition, loyalty generates a spiritual energy that powers the value creation process that is at the heart of sustained business success. In many industries, loyalty explains the differences in profitability among competitors more effectively than scale, market share, unit costs, or most other factors usually associated with competitive advantage.
Customer Reviews:
Holistic Approach to Management.......2007-07-30
I found this book very useful as I am working on a new start-up business and selecting and keeping personnel is key. In this book you find practical examples of how to do this and you see the enormous benefit it is to have loyal employees.
This is a must for anyone starting and/or working at turning a business around.
Great learning tool.......2007-01-27
This is full of great concepts that are easily put to practice with effective results.
The book that started it all!.......2007-01-14
This book above any other, rekindled my passion to fully understand the concept of 'loyalty'. Although it was written quite some time ago now, having its' genesis back in the 1980's, it remains an outstanding work on this topic.
Clearly, thinking has evolved over time and practical application of this approach has clarified and expanded our understanding of this topic, yet the book presents a strong argument for developing a deep appreciation of loyalty and it's impact on business performance.
The book is well researched. Well written. Easy to read, with a good flow. Full of interesting case studies and supporting data this publication is a must read for anyone interested in the topic.
Much attention is today being focused on Customer Loyalty yet the proposition that this book puts forward is that Customer Loyalty is only one third of the argument. Employee loyalty and shareholder loyalty both play a significant role in delivering benefits back to the corporation. Few books have expounded the proposition as thoroughly and completely as this one.
A way to earn consistently higher profits.......2006-09-02
The Loyalty Effect is an analysis of the effects of loyalty. The author, Frederick F. Reichheld, takes a rigorous looks at a variety of successful companies and finds that those "that earned superior levels of customer loyalty and retention also earned consistently higher profits" and sustainable levels of growth.
The examples and data shown in this book give a clear picture of how loyalty can be earned through strong value creation and why this leads to long-term profitability and growth. Beyond customer loyalty, the author also looks at how the right employees, the right investors and the right partnerships can add to the overall strength of a company. The evidence that Reichheld presents in support of loyalty-based management is thought provoking and compelling.
While the author himself doesn't proclaim this that style of management is a magic "cure all", Reichheld's argument is extremely convincing and the research supporting his claim is clear: loyalty makes good economic sense. People running businesses, big and small, can benefit from the ideas presented in The Loyalty Effect. I highly recommend this book.
Learn how to foster loyalty in customers and within your organization.......2006-02-21
These days it would be easy to believe that loyalty didn't matter anymore. Customers are going to shop around, employees are going to hunt for new jobs before they get downsized, and investors will be fickle about holding onto stock if its price moves even an inch. Loyalty, says a whole cadre of business gurus, is out of date and irrelevant. Not so, says author Frederick Reichheld, a director of Bain & Company. Companies like Leo Burnet and A.G. Edwards consistently pay the highest salaries, offer high value to customers at competitive prices, have the highest employee retention rates, and have the highest profitability rates. Loyal customers, employees and investors fuel a sustained cycle of growth at these companies. If you want to foster loyalty in your customers, employees and investors, Reichheld has the following advice:
· Make customer value, not profit, the goal.
· Loyal customers are more profitable than new customers. Break up the potential customer base into segments and find out which ones are more likely to be loyal. Target these customers.
· Find and keep the right employees. Getting the right customers will bring you a profit. Invest that profit in loyal employees who will continue to increase value to your customers. Companies with the highest employee loyalty consistently have the highest customer loyalty.
· Find investors with long-term perspective.
· Learn from defections. If customers or employees are leaving the company, find out why. Take actions to correct problems. Learn from mistakes.
Book Description
The Loyalty Effect will demonstrate the power of loyalty-based management as a welcome and highly profitable alternative to the economics of perpetual churn. It will debunk the pervasive myth about the death of loyalty and provide managers with an effective approach to sustained value creation. It will change the way companies think about loyalty, profits, and the nature of business. In The Loyalty Effects, Reichheld reveals the secrets of successful companies that base their business strategies on loyal relationships. He analyzes traditional accounting-that drive long-term business success. His startling conclusions show how even a small improvement in customer retention can sometimes double profits.
