If writing about music is like dancing about architecture, then a book about performance art is surely like a sonata about sculpture. In the case of The New World Border, however, there is little lost in translation; the force and originality of Guillermo Gómez-Peña's ideas come across loud and clear. Billed as "chicano cyber-punk art," his work revolves around the disorienting reality of living in a multilingual, multicultural society. To express the inherent confusion of colliding cultures, he creates a fictional nation called Aztlan Liberado, where various identities, races, genders, and languages all blend to create an amalgamated society. In this world, the language is Spanglish, all borders have been removed, and whites are the minority. He writes a series of news reports on this theme that turn clichés inside out and point stereotypes the other way: "In an act of random violence, two unemployed corporate executives walked into a luxurious Taco Bell Bistro and fired upon the peaceful fajita-eating customers. Today's headline in the minority paper, the New York Times, reads: 'Blood and guacamole all over walls; a macabre scene.'"

Another piece uses text and photographs to describe an act performed in Europe and the U.S. Here, Gómez-Peña places himself in a small gilded or bamboo cage in the middle of a busy plaza or shopping mall and presents himself as an "exotic multicultural specimen" who can be "activated" by shoppers who want to witness his "incredible ethnic talents." Such talents include modeling traditional Indian garb, doing commercials for organic products, and "posing in attitudes of martyrdom, despair, and poverty"--essentially behaving in any way that spectators expect their "primitives" to act--allowing Gómez-Peña to make a statement about how cultural identities are often presented as commodities.

This American Book Award-winning collection of essays, poems, performance texts, photographs, and "prophesies for the coming century" is by turns outlandish, illuminating, wickedly clever, and unabashedly serious. A frenetic artist, satirist, and phrasemaker, Gómez-Peña is able to convey the electricity and inventiveness of his live shows through heavy doses of humor, irony, and word play. Gómez-Peña's aim is to establish a common middle ground among North Americans; until a seamless North America becomes a reality, however, Gómez-Peña will continue to live on the border--and would like to see us all there. --Shawn Carkonen

This Black Book was an inspiration.

Although it does not hand you a completed dress or outfit...it will give you insight into the original look and textures of the clothing of that time. The artwork and details of patterns given and the pictures of actual outfits will begin any advanced sewing person but personal understanding of exact techniques used to complete a project will be left to the crafter.

Anyone creating this period of costume MUST add this book to their collection or forever wish they had.

      5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2007-05-10

This book is a must have for any re-enactor making their own clothing. I have been searching for a book with this much detail for quite awhile and I am very pleased with this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all historical costumers!.......2007-03-04

Janet Arnold's books have been well used by me over the years. I have made several costumes from each of her books and thrilled with each result. The documentation and drawings are excellent. However, these books are not for beginners. All of the drawings are shown reduced on grid that will have to be re-sized for each wearer which can be very time consuming depending on the complexity of the design. The patterns are historically accurate and portray how the costumes were cut out and constructed in their day.
I wish I could find undergarment patterns this detailed.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2007-01-11

I used this book to design a pattern for a Doublet that I wore to a Mayflower Society function - it was a big hit. I added my own ideas to it. One of the members said it was the best they had ever seen.

This book shows pictures of original clothing, then drawings of the patterns of the originals. Wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Pleased with the book.......2006-08-28

I found this to be an excellent reference work. Using modern period clothing patterns, this book enables the person to incoorporate the special touches that make the result look authentic. Her patterns that matched pictorial examples were extremely helpful.

        Book Description

Book 11 in the Dykes to Watch Out For series finds Alison Bechdel's beloved cast of characters discovering that nothing but change is constant in our multihued terror alert system world. Mo is working her way through library school by shelving bestsellers at Bounders Books and Muzak, Sparrow and Stuart face parenthood with a mixture of ambivalence and zeal, Clarice and Toni clash over the gay marriage debate while their 10-year-old son Raffi jacks cars and slaps hos on his best friend's computer, Sydney's mammogram yields very bad news, Ginger's love life is finally looking up, and is a Hello Kitty thong really the best gift Lois can give 13-year-old Jonas when s/he becomes Janis? Alison Bechdel is legendary for her ability to examine global politics through the prism of dinner conversations, and this book is no exception. Sydney's doctor insists in likening her malignant cells to terrorists, Stuart's home improvement project develops disturbing parallels to Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Ginger's best student turns out to be her most conservative, resulting in an ideology-busting clash of red- and blue-state values.

Alison Bechdel has been writing and illustrating Dykes to Watch Out For since 1982. Her books have won multiple awards, and she was most recently a finalist for the Ferro-Grumley Award and two Eisner awards. She lives in Vermont and is working on a graphic memoir about her queer father.

        5 out of 5 stars Subversive Comedy.......2007-04-09

The graphic novel, Invasion of the Dykes to Watch Out For, by Allison Bechdel, confronts contemporary societal issue such as the "War on Terror," breast cancer, homosexuality, rampant consumerism, motherhood, and popular culture. Bechdel's use of humor challenges authority by refusing to take it seriously. She attacks the deliberate choices people make: hypocrisies, affectations and mindless following of social expectations. The text does not do away with women's feelings of powerlessness; instead it highlights the political nature of women. Invasion of the Dykes to Watch Out For inspires as well as entertains.

5 out of 5 stars Another great addition to the collection.......2006-02-24

My only complaint is that the books don't come out more often! Other than that, Bechdel's humorous social commentary is as fresh as ever. I've been a fan for over 15 years and am always impatient for the next book to come out. Sure, I can go online and read the strip there, but it seems more gratifying to me to read them all at once in book form.

5 out of 5 stars Smart, edgy, controversial...and never dull.......2005-12-19

I had never heard of Alison Bechdel or Dykes to Watch Out For until I was fortunate enough to hear her speak at a diversity conference I attended. She was witty and poignant and I picked up this book and bought it. So I started at the end of a series which I have now gone back and read from the beginning and I love it! This particular book was a great collection (obviously enough to hook me in) that made me laugh, think, and reflected moments in my own life, despite my being heterosexual. What I love about her characters is they are real, smart, interesting women. What I hope for is the day when they are present in the comic pages of national newspapers rather than just liberal lesser known publications. One day we won't have to have a special Lesbian/Gay genre...it will just be incorporated into mainstream media the way the heterosexual experience is today. Support such a world by investing in her work and supporting others like her. Open your mind to new experiences and laugh a little in the process.

        5 out of 5 stars I love this strip!.......2005-11-24

This is one of my favorite comics. I love Alison Bechdel! I have all of the books, and I have been a fan for about 8 years. She's always so funny and insightful. It's like reading a soap opera. I can hardly wait for each installment. You really get to know and love all of the characters, and it's hard not to get emotional over the story lines. Everyone should read all of her books.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time, Money and Effort to Procure.......2007-08-18

I bought all three of his books thru Amazon. Oy vay! What a load of rubbish! No tricks even though the cover says there's tricks in the book. Bah. Just a load of common sense psycho-babble is here. The stuff is so generic you can find it on Google. If there were buttons for negative stars, I'd give it a -5 and tell you to KEEP your money and look elsewhere!

3 out of 5 stars Fluffy, "tip of the day" style book.......2003-09-05

The best part first: this is a fun book. It has straight-forward tips on dealing with 62 different situations, all of which are...more or less...founded in psychology research.

        But...

It's not particularly good for providing *general* information as implied by the sub-title ("What to Do When Hard Work, Honesty, and Perseverance Fail"). For readers interested in those issues, wider reading is necessary.

        2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected..........2003-01-09

Call me manipulative, but you can't accuse this book of the same quality. I was expecting something telling me how to do some down-and-dirty "social engineering"...but...alas, no. It did give me a few tips/tricks that were cool, but it was hokey ... on how to make people feel better and garbage like that. Nothing to make someone insecure about their looks all day...or how to make someone trust you with a few carefully placed words. It doesn't even cover simple things like surveying people, and how to determine body language. Not worth the buy, AT ALL. If you can borrow it from a friend, it's fun for a couple minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice for the Weary.......2001-08-04

The title holds true. Sometimes hard work is overlooked and the kinder you are the worse you feel you are treated. The advice in this book helps to put everything in perspective in a very straight and to the point fashion. From avoiding feeling dizzy in an amusement ride to keepnig the flame in your love life; the pointer are little lessons to remember your entire life. A book to cherish, for you will read it many times over.

        5 out of 5 stars Great tricks!.......2001-01-12

These "Cheap Tricks" have great worth. Actually, the information in this book is quite valuable. It's about using knowledge of brain function to one's advantage in everyday life. Dr. Buff's style of writing is absent of mumbo-jumbo. He has a practical, common-sense approach to science, mixed with great humor, charm and fun-facts. This is the kind of book your friends will ask to borrow and not return. It happened to me.

One film genre that only seems to get more popular over the years is film noir--the hard-bitten, cynical, murder-and-a-two-timing-dame yarns that Hollywood embraced in the 1940s and '50s. But even the biggest noir fans may not be aware of the incredible artwork involved in the films' original posters. L.A.-based film art buff Lawrence Bassoff has amassed a stunning collection, which has been lovingly compiled into this splendid coffee-table paperback. Included are posters and lobby cards--some extremely rare editions--for films like The Maltese Falcon, Out of the Past, and Double Indemnity. Interestingly, though nearly all the films were shot in severe black and white, many of the best posters--like one for Kiss of Death--are drenched in vivid, oversaturated, high-contrast color. Bassoff has also included price ranges for aspiring collectors; posters for the Dick Powell-Claire Trevor film of Raymond Chandler's Murder, My Sweet, for example, have fetched up to $1,800. Once you've sampled this outstanding collection, you may also want to check out Bassoff's other poster compilation, Errol Flynn: The Movie Posters. --Anne Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Film Noir brought to life through colorful posters.......2004-10-09

This is an outstanding collection of film noir posters & is well-written. It starts out with an informative interview with the great director Robert Wise (Born to Kill, The Set-Up) & then has a brief section explaining exactly what film noir means. It has a great section on the antecedents of film noir: detective & crime novels, gangster films, German Expressionism, & Italian Neo-Realism. Next is my favorite part of the book: the "rogues gallery" of fifty film noir stars & their movie roles in the genre. I've turned to this section countless times when doing research, although I wonder why actors like Linda Darnell were included while well-known actors like Sterling Hayden (the Killing, the Asphalt Jungle, Naked Alibi) were left off. Finally, the book covers 36 famous film noirs & the posters of each movie. It includes the typical price range for the posters so this will be very helpful to collectors. Sadly this book has gone out-of-print but you should definitely look for a copy. It's a definite must-have for any serious film noir fan.

5 out of 5 stars Superb collection of film poster art.......1999-03-05

With the growth of interest in film posters and a subsequent similar growth in books on the subject, this book stands head and shoulders above most of the competition. Unlike similar books which are simply hodge-podge collections of poster images, Lawrence Bassoff has created a book that is nearly as much fun to read as it is to look at.Although lightweight on text, there is no padding in this book. The comments on the films themselves are incisive and knowing. By featuring posters from various countries, Bassoff allows the reader to see how different films have been sold in different countries. Part nostalgia trip, part reference work, part cinema graphics history and wholly entertaining, CRIME SCENES adds up to far more than the sum of its parts. After Bassoff's first book on the film posters for Errol Flynn films, CRIME SCENES can only make one wonder: what next from a such an obvious expert in the field? I loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative.......1999-02-24

A nice coffee-table book with gorgeous photographs of classic movie posters. The text gives succinct information about the movies advertised and the value of some of the posters profiled. Also, a run-down of classic film-noir stars is included.

Best known for an opera he set to Gertrude Stein's text, Four Saints in Three Acts (1934), and for the Pulitzer Prize-winning score of the documentary Louisiana Story (1948), composer Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) was also an unswerving champion of modern American classical music during his tenure as the powerful music critic of the New York Herald Tribune (1940-54). His works' tonality, stress on simplicity, and skillful use of traditional American tunes strongly influenced Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and many others. Lively prose evokes the crusty character of an American original in this enjoyably opinionated biography.

          Book Description

In this vivid portrayal of a giant in American twentieth-century music and criticism, Anthony Tommasini recounts Thomson's experiences as a composer, critic, and gay man. Tommasini chronicles Thomson's upbringing in turn-of-the-century Kansas City, along with his struggle to accept his sexuality-"I didn't want to be queer"-as he searched for a place in the wider world through army service in World War I as well as at Harvard and in 1920s Paris. There Thomson studied with Nadia Boulanger and formed an artistic alliance with Gertrude Stein that would result in the pioneering opera Four Saints in Three Acts. Thomson's fourteen-year tenure as chief music critic for the New York Herald Tribune showcased his talent for brilliant, biting commentary and established him as an influential writer on music and an arbiter of musical taste. The result of this involving narrative is a classic American biography of a classic American character.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Thomson's life.......2004-06-25

The late composer Virgil Thomson did write an autobiography. However, autobiographies are not often fully honest. Nor do they often capture the essence of the person. Anthony Tommasini has accomplished both tasks. His portrait of Thomson, while certainly uncompromising is neither a scandal volume and it certainly is not hagiographical. He portrays Thomson very much as he was.

At the time when Thomson wrote his autobiography, American attitudes towards homosexuality were less than favourable. His colleague, Henry Cowell had done time at San Quentin Prison for his homosexual relationships with young men. Tommasini very frankly discusses Thomson's many relationships, particularly his long relationship with the painter Maurice Grosser.

Tommasini obviously does hold his subject in high esteem. However, that does not preclude Tommasini's critical look at his subject. He presents us with a portrait of an often irascible composer/critic whose contributions to American musical life have not yet been fully realised. Bernstein's statement on the death of Thomson unfortunately rings true today: 'we loved his music but rarely played it.' Hopefully, those who read Tommasini's work will become more interested in the extraordinary oeuvre of Virgil Thomson. His is a unique voice. Hopefully, it will be recovered.

              2 out of 5 stars Not Happy.......2006-02-12

I am a complete Sudoku addict and am very disappointed with this book. The only reason I bought it was because I was desperate for more puzzles and it was the only one available at the store I was in. First of all, it costs $4.99 which to me, is way too much money when you can get a Kappa book for $1.99 which has better puzzles. Another thing that bugs me about this book is that some of the answer keys in the back don't match the corresponding puzzles. When I get to the difficult/Very Challenging ones in the back, sometimes I need a little help! But unfortunately, this book has quite a few errors in the answer section so when I've hit a dead end, it's over.

I would recommend Kappa books from your local supermarket. This simply costs too much money for not mush quality.

The End of Oil is a "geologic cautionary tale for a complacent world accustomed to reliable infusions of cheap energy." The book centers around one irrefutable fact: the global supply of oil is being depleted at an alarming rate. Precisely how much accessible (not to mention theoretical) oil remains is debatable, but even conservative estimates mark the peak of production in decades rather than centuries. Which energy sources will replace oil, who will control them, and how disruptive to the current world order the transition from one system to the next will be are just a few of the big questions that Paul Roberts attempts to answer in this timely book.

As Roberts makes abundantly clear, the major oil players in the world wield their enormous economic and political power in order to maintain the status quo. Of course, they get plenty of help from the tens of millions of consumers, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, who guzzle oil as if there is an unlimited supply. And this demand shows no sign of abating--nearly half of the world's population lives without the benefits of fossil fuels and they desperately want to be among the haves. In countries such as China and India, where energy systems are already breaking down, Roberts discusses how they are looking to oil to fuel their race for development, in many cases ignoring environmental considerations altogether.

Though there is much to be pessimistic about, Roberts does uncover some positive developments, such as the race for alternative energy sources, notably hydrogen fuel cells, which could help to ease us off of our oil dependence before a full-blown energy crisis occurs. No one book could cover every aspect of what Roberts calls "arguably the most serious crisis ever to face industrial society," but The End of Oil is a remarkably informative and balanced introduction to this pressing subject. --Shawn Carkonen

              Book Description

You live in this world. You use oil. You must read this book. The situation is alarming and irrefutable: within thirty years, even by conservative estimates, we will have burned our way through most of the oil that is readily available to us. Already, the costly side effects of dependence on fossil fuel are taking their toll. Even as oil-related conflict threatens entire nations, individual consumers are suffering from higher prices at the gas pump, rising health problems, and the grim prospect of long-term environmental damage. In this frank and balanced investigation, Paul Roberts offers a timely wake-up call. He talks to both oil optimists and oil pessimists, delves deep into the economics and politics of oil, and considers the promises and pitfalls of alternatives such as wind power, hybrid cars, and hydrogen. A new afterword brings the book up to the minute. Brisk, immediate, and accessible, this is essential reading for anyone who uses oil, which is to say every one of us.

5 out of 5 stars Fair minded and objective overview of big energy.......2007-09-23

Very readable....Roberts does an excellent job of presenting opinions fairly and from many pro/contra angles. He has fully immersed himself in his topic and the book is chocked-full of fascinating energy facts.

What to do about our energy future has become as politically polarized as abortion - Conservatives favor fossil fuels and the Moderate - Liberal folks want to go Renewable.

Roberts is bare-knuckled about what he feels the agendas are behind the current debate, which leads him to a (slightly) reserved pessimism about our chances of making it out of the mess we've made, by putting all our energy eggs in one basket. He does not hide his contempt for later-day politicians who can't see the forest for the trees and won't take action to avert the coming energy drought.

3 out of 5 stars A must read, but with lots of salt........2007-08-14

This book is both well-written and well-researched. The analysis is sound, in so far as I understand this complex set of issues.

But I have serious doubts. First, I found the writing hysterical and humorless. Granted, he's a journalist, and this is subject is serious, but my first instinct on reading a book written like this is to call BS. I've seen too many books over the years on subjects like Japanese industrial dominance, the death of the whales, economic collapse, etc., to believe that mankind won't self-adjust somehow. To forecast the "end of civilization" in re: Diamond's Collapse, is to make lots of dubious assumptions about causation.

That is not to trivialize the real dangers he exposes with regard to our energy supply. The trifecta of petro-terrorism, climate change, and the energy lobby in DC is surely dangerous. Danger, however, does not spell Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. It spells real problems, that may limit our taste for luxury, but I don't think it's a given that a coming "perilous new world" will make Austin, TX the new Camden, NJ. (Camden's not even that bad).

I think it's instructive to look back to the two basic views on human nature undergirding our liberal legal system: Hobbes and Locke. Roberts seems to believe that a constrained energy supply will lead us to the war of all against all. I'm not so sure we're all that anti-social, and humankind's seen this discussion around 1550-1700. So, if the end of oil poses a crisis in wealth, we will all have to cope, but I'm not sure we'll all become like "dogs fighting in the street over pieces of meat", to quote from the oilman in Syriana.

5 out of 5 stars Wake up call for Americans.......2007-04-15

A lot of these reviews are very good. I think the book is very informative and deeply researhed. I also recommend reading "Blood Oil", look it up.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but a little scary.......2007-03-15

An excellent, thorough and fair review of the global energy situation and the options for our future. It's just a little scary and frustrating that we really aren't doing anything about the challenges the author presents.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Eye-opening, timely, and useful guide for these times!.......2007-03-09

This book gives you a thorough history of our relationship to energy sources, and prepares us for the bumpy roads ahead. Highly recommended. I can now dive into current oil/global warming/energy issues and headlines with a greater understanding of the overall picture. Thankfully, since this was written, the Inconvenient Truth movie was released, and people are getting clued in to the realities of climate change.
