        Book Description

It would be hard to overpraise. The result of thirty years of labour, it is a monument of research which traces the whole social history of art from Lascaux and Altamira to the Film Age.

Open it anywhere-- at the Age of Englightenment in Greece, at the Age of the Migrations and the Carolingian Renaissance, at the Concept of the Baroque, at Revolution and Art, or Impressionism, wherever you like -- you are held by the weight of the argument, confident in the immense knowledge of the author. Other books have dealt with portions of this vast subject, but no single book has covered its whole range with such fullness and power |o Scotsman

        kalinin@terra.com.br
When I purchased The Social History of Art I had never intended to read it from cover to cover. It is, in fact, a bulky book, which covers the history of art from pre-historic to contemporary times. I thought it would be one of those books you place on your bedside table and from time to time, have a look at it, and read bits and pieces when you are sleepless in the small hours. Surprisingly, I started reading it from the very beginning and couldn't stop till I reached the final sentence. I still cannot make out how a single author managed to cope with such an ambitious project.

Unlike other books of art, which stick to the description of each style, and some artists' works as something divorced from other events that took place at the time when they were produced, this book contextualises all the art productions according to the philosophical principles that underlie them, establishing the necessary link with the historical panorama and the social and political backdrop at the time that each artist lived and produced his/her works. Above all, Hauser's The Social History doesn't stick to the analysis of the visual arts as most art books do, but on the contrary, his broad scope extends to literature, drawing, paintings and even films. Never had I dreamed of understanding art as I could understand after reading Hauser's book.

Besides, as an amateur admirer of art, I was thrilled to realise that I could read and grasp his meaning with no extra effort; even so, he never patronises the reader. After reading this book, I realised that concepts I had always taken at face value and had never disputed, had gone down the drain. To my surprise, artists such as Shakespeare and Michelangelo are, in his book, not Renaissance artists but Mannerist artists. So, you learn to evaluate the artists and classify them using a different criterion. Well, this book is good value for money!

3 out of 5 stars Proves that intellectual history has advanced since 1950.......2001-02-28

A very nice introduction to the volume points out the intellectual confusions and tensions throughout. A crude marxism and psychologism overlies a fairly traditional stylistic chronology. One realizes how important are later studies that emphasize patronage and actual political power as opposed to disembodied "forces" and "spirits."

Hauser is always provocative and sometimes amusing. There are surprisingly few examples or paintings analyzed in any detail and sometimes he goes off in such detail on literature that one wonders where the focus of the book truly lies.

This book is worthwhile reading to understand the roots of modern art history - for Hauser is responding to 19th century writers and sees Impressionism as the great watershed in his discipline. He is thus aware of the importance of his own historical nexus, yet is caught up in a kind of analytical conformity that all too often seems like a grey flannel suit imposed upon the art in question.

5 out of 5 stars After Reading This You Do Not Need A Liberal Arts Education.......2000-06-21

Well, that is almost the case. In this four volume set, Hauser accomplishes a concise but sweeping survey of art and society from the Neolithic Age through mid-twentieth century film and the dadaist movement. The references do require some basic familiarity with the literary, artistic, and musical titans, but not expertise. And a reader armed with such a basic familiarity quickly realizes that Hauser succeeds admirably in untangling the complex relationships between the political, social, and religious elements of a culture and artists of genius. After the initial publication of the series, Thomas Mann commented that Hauser provides deep insight into Shakespeare and Goethe. I would add that the same can be said of Dante, Giotto, Beethoven, and a host of others. These volumes may have fallen out of print or may be hard to find, but they are well worth the search.

              Product Description

This is an encyclopaedic study of English dress from the fifth to the eleventh centuries, drawing evidence from archaeology, text and art, and taking account of re-enactors' experience. It examines archaeological textiles, cloth production and the significance of imported cloth and foreign fashions. Dress is discussed as a marker of gender, ethnicity, status and social role, and its contemporary significance in terms of symbolism and stylistic messaging is examined - whether Anglo-Saxons were dressing a corpse for its (pagan) grave, condemning frivolous dress among persons in holy orders, bequeathing their own clothes or commissioning them for a king. The book discusses what modern observers can and cannot deduce from medieval representations of clothing, questioning stereotypes. Generously illustrated with 25 plates (12 colour) and 140 drawings, it demonstrates clothing in contemporary art (manuscripts, ivories, metalwork, stone sculpture, mosaics), and focuses! on surviving dress fasteners and accessories, explaining types and geographical/chronological distribution. There are colour reconstructions of early Anglo-Saxon dress and a cutting pattern for a gown from the Bayeux tapestry (by Robin Netherton). Old English garment names are discussed throughout and a glossary is appended. It updates and develops the author's groundbreaking Dress in Anglo-Saxon England in 1986, adding many new illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Concentration of Information.......2005-03-16

This revised edition of Dr. Owen-Crocker's 1986 book does not disappoint. It incorporates vast amounts of new research, archaeological material, and reenactor feedback and includes many more illustrations as well as reconstruction sketches and intelligent discussion of the available evidence for Anglo-Saxon costume between the fifth and eleventh centuries. A must-have reference for any Anglo-Saxon scholar, as well as for anyone with a serious interest in northern European costume during the so-called "Dark Ages."

5 out of 5 stars A treat for Usagi Fans.......2006-04-08

The latest Usagi compliation brings us to the end of the travels of Usagi with his son Jothro. It reprints a series of first rate stories (deceptive since there are not more than 5 or 6 that I remember not liking in the entire series.) ending with each of the major characters going their own way.

As a rule the trade paperbacks that deal with a continuing storyline are better since you get the whole story all at once, by rights this volume should be purchaed with volume 18 and read together.

Either way, you will get character development and I think the clue to the way the series will finally end. Sakai said that he had intended to kill off Usagi long before this, I suspect this will wait until Jothro is of age and is prepared to travel on his own.

Either way it is worth your time and money.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best of a Series That is One of the Best in Comics.......2005-09-25

In an earlier review, I said how difficult it is to review Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo because of its amazing consistency of quality. Each volume is just a good rousing and satisfying read. However, with this new volume, "Fathers and Sons," Sakai has shown that he is not willing to rest on his laurels, and that he keeps pushing for better things.

Miyamoto Usagi is traveling with Jotaro, the son of the woman Usagi once loved. However, unknown to young Jotaro, Usagi is not merely a beloved "uncle," but his father. Usagi is conflicted. He is escorting Jotaro to Katsuichi, Usagi's sensei, to learn the samurai way. Should Usagi tell Jotaro the truth, or would that cause too much pain for Jotaro? However, there is another secret that Usagi doesn't know that puts a sad and intriguing spin on events.

As the title suggests, the overall theme of this volume is the father/son relationship. The titular story has Usagi and Jotaro coming to the aid of Lone Goat and Kid, Sakai's parody of Lone Wolf and Cub. In "The Pride of the Samurai," Usagi and Jotaro encounter a stubbornly proud but completely destitute ronin and his son as they seek to defend their meager squatter's shack from the local government.

However, not all of the stories concern themselves with paternity. In "Kill the Geishu Lord," Usagi once again crosses paths with the young lord Noriyuki and his vassal Tomoe, as a gang seizes a village to set a trap. It's a straightforward action tale, as is "Hokashi," in which our heroes encounter a group of assassins disguised as street performers. Naturally, this gang has a grudge against Usagi. These stories reveal that Jotaro is quite the formidable little fighter, a chip off the old block. The last story, "Bells," is a tale of Katsuichi-sensei's youth, a sad tale of his love of the woman of another dojo, and the tragedy that resulted.

These are all good stories, but the real impact of this volume lies in Usagi's final decision about telling Jotaro the truth. I won't spoil it, but any astute reader will see it coming, as well as that twist Sakai throws in. Sakai sucessfully writes a very touching moment because it is completely in character for Usagi to make that decision. This attention to character is why this series transcends its furry animal trappings and achieves something quite sophisticated, almost brilliant.

Anyone who hasn't read Usagi Yojimbo should. This volume might not be the best place to start, as it is unusually heavy on past continuity. On the other hand, Sakai makes his work very accessible, even this volume. On its own merits, this volume stands out as one of the best of a series that is in itself one of the best the medium has to offer.

4 out of 5 stars Usagi Yojimbo Volume 19: Fathers And Sons.......2005-09-13

This volume is very clearifying, and is putting twogether some of the things you've been wondering about. It is sort of in-between. There is a lack of action that one could expect from reading all the other books. Still, Stan Sakai manages to give me expectations for the continuing stories and I can see how a whole new landscape of possibilities is opening in many stories after. Because of the calmness in the book, I'll rate it "only" 4 stars.

                Book Description

Just One %$#@ Speed Bump After Another: More Cartoons by Dave Coverly is the latest collection of comic panels by the proudly scatterbrained cartoonist and his constant companion, Cuppa Joe. Regular readers of "Speed Bump" will recognize the subtle ironies and the overlooked details we all take for granted, as well as the occasional wordplay and the gentle pokes at the absurd ways we live and love. Irregular readers might try bran.--The humor is rarely tied to pop culture, current trends or fads; instead, it comes from the human traits we have in common. You may see your family in some of the panels, or your friends, neighbors and co-workers. You may even see yourself...heck you may even see yourself in animal form. In one "Speed Bump" cartoon entitled "Frog Puberty", an adult frog talking to another about his youngster, says, "Last year I'd say `Jump' and he'd say `How High?.... This year I say `Jump' and he says `How Come?'"--Much like the last book, this "Speed Bump" tome covers a wide range of topics. You'll find plenty of cartoons about kids & parenting, love & relationships, work & business...and as Dave is a regular contributor to Peta's Animal Times magazine, there are more than a few animal cartoons thrown in for good measure.--Now with more than a decade under its stylishly drawn belt, "Speed Bump" has accumulated hundreds of newspapers and millions of readers on several land masses around the world. It's found its way onto refrigerator doors, church bulletin boards, calendars and greeting cards, and into textbooks, TV programs, and even a U.S. Congressional Hearing. But being the nice folks that we are, we've saved you the trouble of tracking all these down yourself by binding them into a big, beautiful book. It even has a pull-out color section so you can pin your favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Book I've Read in a Long While.......2006-09-28

Dave Coverly is one of the most underrated cartoonists out there. I competely agree with the previous review, in that he shares the same creative writing style as Larson, but his illustrations are superior.

The puns are numerous and outrageous... and will have you actually laughing out loud. Dave's brilliant artwork fits the subject matter perfectly. I have a number of comic collections in my library and this one now resides in my favorites section. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up. Better yet, call your local paper and demand that they run Speed Bump.

5 out of 5 stars The true heir to Gary Larson.......2006-05-24

Are you a fan of "The Far Side?" Do you wish that Gary Larson was still doing that comic? I'm sad that he's gone too, but he sure produced a host of people to carry the load. Some have nowhere near the amount of imagination that Larson did, but one person definitely does. That's Dave Coverly, author of "Speed Bump." I just read through one of his latest collections, called Just One %$#@ Speed Bump After Another... and it's yet another winner.

Coverly is the closest I have seen to Larson's creativity in the one-panel (or sometimes small multi-panel) comic strip, bringing his characters to life and making wonderful jokes. Sometimes, Coverly will take a familiar phrase, and give it just one twist to the left to make you laugh out loud (such as one comic in this book where one baby sitting on a park bench tells another baby not to worry. "We *all* get thrown out with the bathwater from time to time.") Other panels have plays on words that sometimes make you groan, but always make you laugh (the head of a thesaurus publishing company telling an employee "Bob, you're fired, axed, canned, sacked, booted, dismissed, terminated and let go.")

This is the first collection I've read, so I don't know if the layout's the same in all of them, but this one is divided into sections regarding children, animals, gender differences in society, work, the meaning of life, and then a hodge-podge of unrelated subjects. The jokes are always clever, pop culture references abound ("Diane's date with a Headline News Anchor: 'Weird...didn't we just have this conversation half an hour ago, Tom?'") and even the introductions to the chapters are quite witty. The chapter regarding workplace comics begins with him describing a typical day on the comic creation assembly line, catching a bus with some lesser cartoonists while some (like Scott Adams) drive by in limos. Coverly doesn't avoid philosophy either, with one panel having God tell an angel "C'mon, it'll be fun! I'll throw on some stars, pop in a few planets, drum up a life form or two, and this place will be hoppin'!" The caption is, of course, "The Big Shebang Theory."

As for the artwork, Coverly's work is quite distinctive. He doesn't have any set "characters" like Larson did; instead all of them look quite different. Some have big noses that jut from their faces, while others have little ones. The eyes are different, heck even the body shapes are quite unique. Even the inevitable James Earl Jones comic (you can probably guess along what lines it runs) actually has him look vaguely like James Earl Jones!

This is a great collection of strips from the last couple of years. It was published in late 2005, and contains the winner of last book's caption contest, where you get to write the punchline! This year's deadline was April 7, 2006, so I missed it, but the winner will appear in the newspaper sometime during the year. "Speed Bump" is one of the funniest one-panel comics around these days, and Gary Larson's legacy is well in hand. Pick this one up today.

                  Book Description

In Screen Traffic, Charles R. Acland examines how, since the mid-1980s, the U.S. commercial movie business has altered conceptions of moviegoing both within the industry and among audiences. He shows how studios, in their increasing reliance on revenues from international audiences and from the ancillary markets of television, videotape, DVD, and pay-per-view, have cultivated an understanding of their commodities as mutating global products. Consequently, the cultural practice of moviegoing has changed significantly, as has the place of the cinema in relation to other sites of leisure.

Integrating film and cultural theory with close analysis of promotional materials, entertainment news, trade publications, and economic reports, Acland presents an array of evidence for the new understanding of movies and moviegoing that has developed within popular culture and the entertainment industry. In particular, he dissects a key development: the rise of the megaplex, characterized by large auditoriums, plentiful screens, and consumer activities other than film viewing. He traces its genesis from the re-entry of studios into the movie exhibition business in 1986 through 1998, when reports of the economic destabilization of exhibition began to surface, just as the rise of so-called e-cinema signaled another wave of change. Documenting the current tendency toward an accelerated cinema culture, one that appears to arrive simultaneously for everyone, everywhere, Screen Traffic unearths and critiques the corporate and cultural forces contributing to the “felt internationalism” of our global era.

If someone had no previous knowledge of Ethel Merman's life and career, this book could be valuable, containing as it does all of the basic information. For one like myself, long a fan, it was very boring. There was nothing original, little anecdotal (though, to the author's credit, he does discount a few misconceptions), no insights, and actually very little detail. It is primarily an overview of Ethel's career, with brief references to her personal story, which seemed more like a collection of Playbill clips than a biography.

                                    Description:
Gershwin's song 'I Got Rhythm' serves here as a backdrop representing the social context of the inter-war years. On center stage is a particular aspect of the history of birth control - the application of a new theory of ovulation to contraception. Starting in 1928, a series of experiments revealed a biochemical rhythm in the female reproductive cycle, which contradicted the widespread idea that ovulation and pregnancy could occur at any time. This discovery was applied to a new contraceptive method, the rhythm method, which enjoyed significant popularity during the 1930s, especially among Catholics. For a short period, women could join Ethel Merman in the refrain 'I got rhythm, I got my man, who could ask for anything more?' But the rhythm method has not lived to its promise, and the play goes on...

                                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-07-26

This is a great book which makes you laugh after solving each cryptogram, and I've been doing a few cryptograms a day for the last month. One can do it without clues or opt to have one or two clues.
The print is great, the size is perfect to carry it everywhere and I would highly recommend this book to cryptogram lovers. I plan to buy this book for my mother-in-law who loves solving puzzles and cryptograms.
I've done over half the cryptograms and have found only 2 errors, but it didn't bother me. Most are of medium difficulty, and once in a while there is one which is more difficult.

5 out of 5 stars Have lots of fun with codes........2004-06-04

This inexpensive, sturdy, entertaining book contains 400 humorous, comical and sometimes even witty quotes, drawn from a myriad of personalities and encoded in challenging substitution cipher, guaranteed to keep you busy for hours.
It also includes an introduction with general hints for solving cryptograms and, for those who take a wrong turn, two sections with clues on the solution of each puzzle. The full solutions are presented at the back of the book, along with an index of authors and quotations for those searching for quotes from one or another individual in particular.
The puzzles vary in difficulty, and you will find yourself using your intuition, your knowledge of spelling and syntax, and even your familiarity of each quoted individual to figure them out.
If you love cryptograms, buy this book. I can assure you that besides getting a healthy workout for your mind, you will also find, at the end of each puzzle, a gratifying laugh, chuckle or smile.

3 out of 5 stars A fun book but definitely NOT error free.......2004-03-12

At this writing, I have worked 283 puzzles and have found three of them to have errors (puzzles 59, 256 and 272). While solving the puzzles has been fun, it's disconcerting to stumble across an error.

It's still a fun book. Some of the puzzles almost solve themselves. Others require you to dig deep into your knowledge of spelling and syntax, as well as the personality of the author of the quotation itself. Most are somewhere in between. In fact, if you're a multitasker like me, you can watch TV or even talk on the phone while solving the puzzles.

I'm beginning to panic at this point because I've only got 117 puzzles left! All in all, I recommend the book, errors notwithstanding.

5 out of 5 stars These puzzles were fun to do!.......1999-08-25

There's a real reward doing these humorous puzzles, a good chuckle at the end. I'm a cryptogram nut these days and I found this one a real hoot. Each puzzle rated a least a smile and at most a belly laugh. If you like this kind of puzzle, by all means get this one. Oh yes, the pages are nice and sturdy, so you don't have to worry about making holes in the paper when you erase.

                                    5 out of 5 stars This is a cryptogram worker's dream - all cryptograms!.......1999-07-27

I found this book to be error-free. It has page after page of puzzles to work on hour after hour. I recommend it for those who love cryptograms.

For the novice, a clue is provided for each puzzle at the end of the book.

I have had to buy several copies for family members who share my addiction to this clever type of puzzle.

There are enough puzzles to last days and days and days. That beat working 20 in a puzzlebook, and then having to buy a new puzzlebook. I like all cryptograms. This book was written for me!

                                    4 out of 5 stars good start.......2007-09-03

Well this book seemed to be a perfect choice if you want to get an introduction to existing agile methods. This book describes them quite well for a first shot, and even compares them. There are good tips of combining these methods according to your needs. If you want to know one of the methods better you'll need to buy another book unfortunately.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Iterative and Agile.......2007-07-23

This book provides a very good overview for managers of the Iterative & Agile Development methods. I liked this book...it isn't too in-depth...perfect for someone who needs to know the basics about Scrum, XP, UP and other Iterative/Agile methods.

Two things about the book that keep it out of my 'recommended book list' are:

                                    1. I thought it could have used a bit more editing/revision prior to release as their are some minor errors, but on the whole this is a very good book.
                                    2. Removal or Revision of Chapter 4. This chapter is an attempt to bring all of the agile/iterative methods together into a 'story' but it just doesn't work that well for me. What might have helped is to move this chapter toward the end of the book after all the methods have been discussed.

Overall...this is a good book and one worth reading if you are interested in learning more about Iterative & Agile development topics. The book really made me think about the 'tried and true' PMI methods for managing projects and how those methodologies aren't really a good fit in the world of software development.

After reading the book (and a few other Agile books) I've begun to think about ways to move Agile methods from software/product development to other areas such as IT Management, Service Management and other areas of business.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on Adaptive software development.......2007-07-19

I have been involved in software development processes for the last 18 years. This is the kind of book that I read cover to cover. Carig Larman has not only defined what agility really is, but also covered most of the known agile methods like Scrum, XP, UP and Evo. Chapter 11 "Practice Tips" contains many many useful and practical tips.

Author builds the ground on basis that software development is fundamentaly differnt than predictable mass manufacturing. Therefore, typical enigeering concepts (including traditional software engieering) do not apply. The book is a bit expensive but well worth its cost.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-05-09

I've got an extensive library of agile and software development texts. I wish I had bought this much earlier.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought.......2007-05-07

This book is by far, not as good as I thought it would be, but enough in order to have a general view of Scrum, XP and UP also.

There are too many chapters speaking about history aspects, and I guess that who buys this book expects just more, I mean, It's a Craig Larman book!.

Anyway, it's a good book, but not exceptional.
