Book Description
The English Romantic painter J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) is renowned for his sublime and dramatic landscapes and seascapes. This handsome bookwritten by Turner expert James Hamilton and published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition organized by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institutefocuses primarily on the artist's spectacular seascapes dating from the 1840s, the last decade of his illustrious career. Turner: The Late Seascapes provides new and provocative insights into these powerful works, relating them to the artist's interest in poetry and drama as well as his curiosity about science, optics, and photography. Turner's extensive travels and the relationship between Turner's paintings and seventeenth-century Dutch precedents are discussed in depth. Hamilton also examines the important role of the pendant in Turner's late art, arguing that his paired works have intentional associative narrative, stylistic, and chromatic meanings. Furthermore, Hamilton traces the evolution of Turner's famous Whaling series, offering a new source for it. Including more than one hundred examples of Turner's dramatic and lively marine picturessixty of which are reproduced in full colorthis elegant book sheds fascinating new light on one of the world's most beloved artists.

I Kid You Not.......2007-07-31
This was an interesting read. Why spend all sorts of money on yarn when I already have two fuzz producing critters? But then again who wants to wear a hat that smells like dog?
Smell was my biggest worry when I ran across this book. I know only too well how stinky my wet dogs can be, but apparently they say the smell can be washed out quite permanently and easily and then they ask if one has ever smelled a sheep up close. Good point!
With smell issues out of the way, I read on with interest. Instead of throwing away all of that lovely golden fur floating around my home, I might actually be able to use it. Of course this involves quite a bit of work. Daily brushings, the labor intensive washing, washing and washing again of the fuzz (without clogging your drain in the process), then one must card (comb)the fuzz so it all lays the way it should, then you've got to oil it, spin it (an art in itself) and ply it into yarn. Yikes, it looks so easy when laid out in a few pages in a book but it sounds too much like work for someone like me.
After you've done all of the above, if you're one of those inexhaustible types, you can knit hats, scarves and just about anything that you'd knit with wool. The projects seem pretty straightforward but the instructions assume one has some familiarity with knitting. There are scarves, hats, mittens sweaters, even a doggie sweater (the pic shows a pug smugly wearing a sweater made from newfoundland fur, way too cute!). You must know the basic stitches, know all about knitting the round, know how to use your double pointed and circular needles and how to work fair isle/intarsia if you want to finish many of these items. I would've appreciated a little knitting 101 section here (especially for the color work, are you supposed to purl or knit the colors??), but that's just me and I suppose that stuff can easily be found on google but still . . .
The other downside of this book are the black and white photos. The items are described as beautiful tones of "golden retriever fur" or whatever and then they show a grainy b&w photo of a fuzzy looking scarf which was so disappointing. There also are not nearly enough photos showing how to make and use the drop spindle (though the carding section was well illustrated and appears simple enough). I seriously doubt I could learn the art of spinning dog fuzz using only this book and will look for a video if I ever get my fuzzies washed and ready (I think this part intimidates me the most!).
There is a section outlining breeds and their "spinability" for those on the lookout for fuzz machines. Lucky for me, my two goldens are top producers but my lab is a poor choice. Apparently, though, his "short chocolate sprinkles" can be added to all of the glamorously soft golden fur to spice up the color. Who knew?
This was an informative, very niche book, that takes its topic seriously and was a fun read. It's got me looking at the fuzz balls in a new way but I'm not sure if I'll ever work up the energy to collect, wash, card, and then spin this stuff into workable yarn because I'm just too lazy. Though it might make a nice little side business for someone with a lot of time to spare. Imagine a keepsake of your beloved pet like no other. The possibilities are endless . . .
great knitting book for pet lovers.......2006-07-27
finally....a great book for what was once considered annoying pet hair....LOVE IT
Kudos for a resourceful book.......2003-11-30
in this day and age, living in the states, we can be so wasteful. It was refreshing to find a book about recycling, that has nothing to do with paper and plastic. Why didn't anyone think of this before? I'm just really impressed and happy that these books are actually out there. It is important for use to save our resources, before it's too late!
Good Reading.......2001-09-13
I bought this book 2 years ago and it is still good reading. It gives easy-to-follow instructions on how to clean, card, and spin other animal fur as well as doghar.....And it has made me more comfortable to know that there are others who do this and not that I am just spending too much time in the woods (As I have been accused of by neighbors)
How much is that doggy in the window?.......2000-08-17
Golden retriever scarves, Grand Pyranees hats, Siamese socks, and Samoyed sweaters! Kendall Crolius and Anne Montgomery force you not only to examine the logic of what materials to use for knitting, but also offer a new yardstick of the knit value of household pets. I have to admit that if I ever seek another dog, I'm going to be looking at the silky haired retrievers instead of short haired varieties that offer little more than dander and love. No more bulldogs or boxers for me--I want a dog that I can brush, spin, and knit big soft golden retriever sweaters. Truly a breakthrough in pragmatic thought!

Book Description
Toothpaste for Dinner offers a sarcastic but honest portrayal of modern existence. The characters, barely more than stick figures, provide a blank slate on which readers can impose their own experiences and frustrations. Everyone has a coworker who regales them with tales of weekend drunkenness, or swings by their cubicle every day with an insipid joke. We want to tell our boss that nobody cares about the antics of her craaaazy cats, or that despite his idea that he's the "office clown," everyone hates the IT guy. We never say these things aloud, but we want to. And the indignities of modern life go well beyond the office. We all know the frustration of standing in line behind someone having a much-too-personal mobile-phone conversation, or the problem of deciding whether an article of clothing is ironically hip or just plain stupid. But then there's Drew, in his internet fiefdom, saying the things we can't, pondering the confusing, annoying and just plain weird, and making us feel a bit less alone.

One of the Best Comics Around!.......2006-12-16
The author's sense of humor is very amusing. Great bathroom reader.
I think I just peed myself a little. Yep. That's pee........2006-02-17
Did you grow up listening to indie (or at least a couple of REM songs)? Do you work a crappy office job? Tired of the weak comics that newspapers try to sell to you (except for the boondocks and pearls before swine... and i mean come on, more garfield? vintage peanuts? way to keep your finger on the pulse...)? Care more about the humor than the art? If you answered "yes" to 25% of the above questions or more, you'll love this book like hipsters like tight jeans and bad haircuts.
It's a perfect coffee table book. And, if you like to laugh while you go to the bathroom like I do you can keep it on the back of your toilet as long as you/your guy friends don't drunkenly pee that high.
I guarantee guffaws, snorts, chortles, and yes, a little bit of pee.
Who wouldn't want a career in chemistry after this?.......2006-02-01
My friend lent me a copy of this book, so I came into the whole Toothpaste For Dinner phenomenon cold. The first hint I got that something was up was when my girlfriend picked it up and was laughing hysterically in the first five minutes. This is unbelievably funny. So funny it hurts. So funny it's dangerous.
Drew's Awesomeness in a Nutshell........2006-01-11
Finally, a published collection of Drew drawings!! Toothpaste for Dinner is the greatest webcomic ever written, with comedy and references spreading all horizons. I've been a huge TPFD fan for years now and some of my absolute favorites are here, including a slightly altered version of "Paper Jam."
The best thing about Drew is he knows exactly how people work and calls them out on some of the lame things we say and do just for social acceptance. For example, the one where the man complains about the bathroom smelling, and Drew replies "Yeah, it's almost like people pull their pants down in there and poop." Little things like that show the brilliant mind of Drew in action, and this book celebrates it all. It even has an introduction by the man himself. Not that anyone else would or should, but yeah.
Anything by Drew I will eat up automatically, but this book really is a great collection to take with you to keep yourself entertained wherever you go. My ONLY complaint is the lack of Robarb in the book, but the quality of drawings in here more than makes up for it. I hope this is the first of many TPFD collections, because having them in print is awesome when the internet breaks.
Best Bathroom Book EVER!.......2006-01-11
I bought the Toothpaste for Dinner book not because I am a long time fan of all things Drew from "block porn" to the toothpaste for dinner website but because it is a lovely shade of aqua which matches my 1960's bathroom fixtures exactly!
Well...okay not really...I mean it does match...but seriously this is a terribly funny book and it is great to just keep laying around on your coffee table or toilet back...whatever. Perfect for a quick two minute "reading" session. Seriously though we don't have a coffee table and the pug would likely chew it if I laid it there we keep it in the bathroom. People save their poops for my house now so they can go upstairs and read the Toothpaste for Dinner book...and then come downstairs and say "hey did you see that one drawing about the amazingly funny situation? it was really funny!" And I'm like yes...believe it or not I did read the entire picture book myself.
It is definitly the funniest "comic book" I own and I reccomend it to everyone who has a bathroom!
Book Description
Like an interactive version of Sex and the City or Bridget Jones s Diary, this romantic comedy follows a young woman s quest for love in the big city, amid the dangers of torn stockings, maxed-out credit cards, obnoxious roommates, adulterous husbands, dark alleys, and worse.
On every page, YOU have control of the story: If you suggest that your date s hands are moving too fast, turn to page 128. If you insist that he run to Rite-Aid for protection, turn to page 51. If you throw caution to the wind and unfasten his belt, turn to page 117.
Choose wisely, and you could wind up with the love of your life. Choose poorly, and you could wind up on the Internet, in a series of lurid photographs that would make your other blush. Anything can happen and it s all up to you!

A better choice for Choose your Own Adventure.......2005-10-08
This is a fun book suitable for pre-teens and teen girls. There are chances to make some bad decisions that don't always give a harsh enough outcome (i.e. having unprotected sex with a stranger results in marriage and a baby), but in general this book was fun and when the reader makes a really bad call at one point (yes, I read through all of the endings), the author slightly chastizes the poor choice (which I found amusing and light hearted). This book does not encourage multiple dates in one night, but instead gives options of whether you want to go on a date that night, if so, what happens, and there are lots of twists and turns that make this book fun even for a pre-teen/teen who is not an avid reader. The stories are fairly short and could be read with limited time.
Wonderfuly Witty.......2004-12-01
Need a book to blow your mind? night of a thousand boyfriends is it. this book is fun fast and a great guilt free way to indulge in man candy. mmm man candy.
Hilariously Creative.......2003-08-15
This book is a "must have." Dating, friendship, and coincidental humor paired with lusty excitement and it's even interactive!! "Night of a Thousand Boyfriends" allows you to channel decisions that you could have never made in realife all while making you laugh. The book is a true necessity!!!!
Hysterically Creative.......2003-08-15
This is a book is a must for fun chuckles paired with lusty excitement. The stories are so entertaining that "A Night of a Thousand Boyfriends" is hard to put down. An absolute necessity...
sexy little cutie pie.......2003-07-22
this book is pure, indulgent fun, like you shouldn't be reading it but you can't help yourself. it's like candy but without calories and all that sugar that's bad for your teeth.
this would be the cutest gift for your girlfriends (but i recommend buying one for yourself as well because you'll want to keep it)
my only concern is that the publisher, quirk books, has yet to publish the other "date with destiny adventures" they promise are to come, and now i fear i will be denied them. PLEASE don't keep them away from me!!

Best of the bunch.......2005-07-16
I own just about every book ever written on screenwriting (at last count there were 4,689 of them), and I have to say that Allen B. Ury's SECRETS OF THE SCREEN TRADE is the most comprehensive, concise, and accessible of them all.
This book has been an invaluable resource for the script I am working on now, and I know it will be worn and dog-eared before too long as I refer back to it over and over again on future projects.
Oh, and by the way -- it's also a "GREAT READ" -- as a screenwriter, I can offer no higher praise.
A wittily written and highly recommended overview.......2005-04-14
Successful author and screenwriter Allen B. Ury presents Secrets Of The Screen Trade: From Concept To Sale, a practical guide to not only creating a screenplay that is coherent and salable, but also how to get it sold without getting ripped off. Writing tips, tricks, and techniques include a sample of overused premises to avoid (such as mysteries where the protagonist is the murderer), ten screenplay writing rules and when to break them (the first act should not occupy more than a quarter of the screenplay, unless there are so many funny jokes/action-packed events that the story is not dragging), and all too common errors to avoid, such as writing "at last he understands" in the screenplay description - the sure mark of an amateur, since "understanding" is an internal emotion and a screenplay must focus on external facets that a director can work with. Secrets Of The Screen Trade goes on to give the reader the basic low-down on submitting scripts, a process that has changed little in fifty years, and sharply warns writers not to be taken in by scam artists - such as agents who charge a flat rate instead of a sales commision, or internet sites that pretend they're doing you a favor by promoting your work online, when no serious film producer browses websites for his next movie script. A wittily written and highly recommended overview for anyone interested in the screenwriting trade.

Superseded by e23 download.......2006-08-30
Nothing against the software, which I'm perfectly happy with, but buying it on CD has pretty much been superseded by downloading a nice current version from SJG's e23 digital media site.
Functional.......2005-11-08
The program seems to work as expected. I haven't had a chance to create more than a few characters, but I've run into no trouble as of yet.
I have experienced no issues with the program in terms of poor performance. Unlike the previous user, I can minimize and restore the program without a problem. The program works quite quickly for me. I have used the program on two separate systems with no issues at all. Granted they are both above-average systems in terms of power, so if you have an older system your experience may differ.
Farpatchket.......2005-10-09
Us Jewish people have a saying called - Farpatchket, meaning to tinker and toy with something so much one only makes things worse trying to make it better.
The program is buggy, confusing, and compare to it's predecessor - a mess. I will give it a star for a nicer printing format although why I had to download and add in a spread sheet to put in a character portrait I'll never understand as it should be a basic feature.
Beware! Takes a LONG time to open, and heaven forbid you minimize the character you're working on you will have to exit to open it again. I just haven't figured out another way.
Slow and clunky.......2005-09-13
I had been looking forward for this product ever since Gurps 4th edition came out in August of 2004. Much of the great flexibility of the new system also happens to require a non-trivial bit of math (e.g. innate attacks, affliction and numerous enhancements and limitation modifications) and so I was excited for an sort of tool which would could take the long division out of character creation.
I snatched it up the moment it came out, brought it home, and installed it painlessly.
I then started it up, and got a strange warning message about printing... A bit jolted, I closed the pop-up, and got to tryng to making a character.
The first thing I noticed was the visible delay anytime I changed anything. Putting 16 points into a skill or buying up a stat to 20 took a non-trivial amount of time, as you'd click the increment button, wait for it to apply the change, and then click again.
The interface itself just looks kind of "off". It is non-standard in a lot of little ways that just make it feel akward to use.
Finally, I gave a stab at the one of most anticipated features (for me), the able to publish your character to an html format, which I figured would be a clean way to share my character with those who didn't have GCA or just as a backup copy somewhere in case I forgot my sheet after driving 30 miles. =P
So I export it to html, and take a look... And it's essentially a gigantic block list of text. Seemingly no attempt was made to couch the output in any sort of table or otherwise readable output.
In short, this program did not live up to any of my expectations, nor even to some of the lesser expectations one come to expect of any other commercial software product.
However, it is pretty much the only game in town. Maybe if this product had come out a bit sooner, before we had all been forced to do everything by hand for a full year, this would seem far more acceptable. But, as is, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have quite a bit more patience than mathematical talent...
Vital resource for GURPS players and GMs.......2005-07-08
The long-awaited "official" version of Armin Sykes's GCA, updated to handle the new fourth edition of GURPS as well as the previously-supported third edition, revised.
New features include:
A "Quick View" window that summarizes your character, giving easy access to the various different functions, attributes, advantages, skills, while keeping the big picture available for you to see at all times.
Full support for Templates, as they were introduced in 3/e and in their current 4/e incarnation.
Equipment handling, with all the basic material pre-entered, and a loadout manager that lets you set up different profiles. For example, your character's sheet can list all her equipment, but you specify what she generally carries, and GCA calculates her encumbrance based on that. Items are easy to change on-the-fly.
The equipment list also calculates weapon damage.
As in all versions since its debut back in 1995, GCA 4 is highly customizable. Editing the various settings and tags is a lot easier than in previous versions, so you can tweak a skill or other trait as you're entering it.
This initial release ships with a data file that covers the full fourth edition basic set, as well as older third edition material. New fourth edition files will be released as they're created (presumably as 4/e books are published), on the SJG website. GCA's always been extremely well-supported by its author and a cadre of devoted fans, and I expect that will continue.
GURPS Character Assistant will save you time, catch errors you might make in the bookkeeping, and give you good-looking output. It's worth your money.

Retail Business Kit for Dummies.......2007-08-04
I recently opened a small shop in an antiques mall and found this book to be quite helpful. The information is presented in an interesting and easy to use format. The book covers all the basics and is loaded with useful suggestions for marketing your business.
Good read, but too rudimentary.......2006-08-31
One thing is for sure - if you really intend to start your own retail business, Retail Business Kit for Dummies will not take you far. It is very rudimentary, to say the least. My real disappointment is because of the CD that came with the book, supposedly full of useful forms, reports etc. They looked as if they were written with a typewriter.Anyway, regardless of your profile, I do not think that this book will help you open or run a successful retail business, nor significantly compliment your existing knowledge.
However, it does make an interesting read, and offers good common sense advice based on the authors many years in the industry.
A must read for the beginner.......2005-07-21
I could hardly put this book down after receiving it. I especially liked the section on writing a business plan. Lots of detail in this book.
Great for basics, too general for experienced marketers.......2003-10-13
I should preface this review by saying that I am probably not the typical reader the author had in mind when writing this book. As a marketing consultant, I was recently was engaged to develop retail feasibility study and project plan for an Internet retailer planning their first bricks and mortar store. Although I have retail marketing experience, I bought this book to make sure that I had all bases covered and to get some fresh ideas on visual merchandising, retail POS systems and operations for small retailers.
This book is a great tool for a would-be entrepreneur thinking about starting their first retail business. It covers all the basics needed to plan, set up and manage a retail business, from writing the business plan to making the business a reality. The author makes good use of case studies which illustrate some of the retail successes and failures that he has observed. Another feature I found particularly useful are the tips on all aspects of retailing that could take years of trial and error to learn on your own. Last but not least the CD contains a wealth of useful forms and checklists.
Some areas that I would like to see developed in future editions are:
* Visual merchandising and store layout - more on principles and examples of floor plans
* Software suggestions - small business retail POS systems, planogram and merchandising design software
* Sample budgets and project plans
* Links to online sources of information - where to find designers, software, sales staff etc
To summarize, an excellent book on retail basics and if Rick Segel writes an "Advanced Retailing for Dummies" book, I will be the first customer.
Great book for retailing entrepreneurs!.......2003-06-17
I'm a CPA in Redmond, WA with a heavy retail clientale. (I'm also the author of QuickBooks for Dummies and Quicken for Dummies.)
This is a great book for people looking to start successful retail stops. Tons of great ideas. It's also a great book for established retailers looking to improve their profitability.
My one gripe with the book is that the tax advice and information is wrong. But your accountant or attorney can and should provide that information to you.
