        Book Description

Indeed, Get Fuzzy has rocketed to the top of the list of syndicated newspaper strips. It now appears in 250 newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Examiner, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Detroit Free Press, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Seattle Times. Readers can't get enough of the goofy trio that populate this hilarious strip: Rob Wilco, the single, mild-mannered advertising executive, and his two rambunctious pets, Bucky, the sharp-fanged, self-absorbed cat, and Satchel, the easygoing mixed-breed dog who ends up on the receiving end of Bucky's mischief. The combination creates Get Fuzzy's astutely witty take on relationships between the species. Now, in a size and format that's perfect for die-hard fans and those looking for the perfect gift, I Would Have Bought You a Cat, But . . . will become the must-have little treasure for everyone who craves a bit more of the trademark Get Fuzzy foolishness, or just enjoys a good chuckle.

This is a gift-book that is a compilation of single frames from previously published whole comic strips. The frames are usually the "punch lines" and are funny only if you have previously read the entire strip and understand the dysfunction that is Bucky Katt. There is no new material here. If the recipient of the gift is not familiar with the material, they will not think this is funny. If they are familiar with the material, they have seen all of this before.

This would have to be one of the funniest books. I love cats, I have two of them but they are not the right animal for a lot of people and this little book explains why. I loved it.

Some resumes are good, some are bad, and some are simply from Hell. The all-too-real resumes in this book were no doubt written with the best of intentions, but a job search can be a misadventure. A wacky resume is a sure-fire way to derail your job application and slip from the interview pile into the "joke file." In this illustrated "how not to," former recruiters Jon Reed and Rachel Meyers open up their own joke files, and share highlights from the worst (and funniest) resumes they ever received. From "Questionable References" to "Hostile Email Interactions," Jon and Rachel take the reader through more resume mishaps and job search meltdowns than they ever knew existed, sneaking in a bit of job search wisdom on the fly. The resumes in this book have been changed to protect the not-so-innocent, but Resumes from Hell is proof that truth is still stranger - and funnier - than fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Resume Guide for a New College Grad.......2007-06-04

As a recent college graduate looking to start my career, I found this book to be an absolutely hilarious guide on how NOT to write my first resume. My favorite section was "Politics, Religion, and Other Inappropriate Subjects." The statements some of these people wrote in their resumes were so crazy I almost couldn't believe that they were real! I especially liked the one where the applicant signed their cover letter as "lovely human being."
This is definitely a must read for anyone who's ever written a resume or, like me, needs to write one in the very near future!! Although many of the excerpts are absurd, each chapter starts out with a helpful hint, making the book just as useful as it is entertaining. I would recommend this title to absolutely anyone.

        5 out of 5 stars A .......2005-08-24

This is not your typical resume book, and these are definitely not your typical resumes! Working in a Career Development office, I see my fair share of resume books, and this one really stands apart from the rest. While the more serious-minded job-seeker might opt for something a little more formal, those with a relaxed attitude and sense of humor are sure to appreciate the book's fun but functional "How Not To" approach to resume-writing.

Without all the rigid instruction of most resume books, Resumes From Hell gives readers something fun and new - a chance to learn from the mistakes of others. Whether it's sending important email messages with an online identity like [...] or telling employers you created "today's fanny pack industry," the mistakes and mishaps in this book boldly remind job-seekers to pay attention to details and to think more like hiring managers.

5 out of 5 stars Amusing and educational.......2005-05-21

This book is almost as educational as it is funny. I read it cover to cover on a Boston - San Francisco flight and probably upset my fellow passengers by bursting into laughter on several occasions. As a bonus, I sure know what NOT to do next time I'm looking for a new job! Highly recommended!

        5 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny--and useful, too.......2004-12-08

Resumes from Hell is one of those rare examples of a book that is both entertaining and useful. Every single page contains a laugh-out-loud example of what NOT to do if you are a job-seeker. From the candidate who left a voice-mail describing his delicious sandwhich, to the one who listed his mother as a reference, the examples in this book are almost too comical to be believed--and yet each and every one is true.

All of the excerpts have been sorted into clearly defined sections, where off-the-wall examples are used to illustrate genuinely helpful resume pointers. Readers can flip through and entertain themselves by reading pages at random, or take a more utilitarian approach going chapter by chapter to get guidance on questions like whether or not to list hobbies on a resume.

I recommend readers turn immediately to the index and start from there. In it, the editors have brilliantly culled some of the most unlikely single words and phrases from their resume files--like "completely useless," and "orgasm," (not used in the same sentence, it's worth noting)--and compiled them into one hysterical list.

I received Resumes from Hell as a gift, and it is one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Resumes Rescued from the Round File.......2004-11-16

Frustrated about today's shrinking job market? Having trouble finding a job that even requires submitting a resume (and doesn't require sporting a colorful uniform)? Finding a good job requires education, experience, and a really good resume that stands out above the competition... That is, unless you're up against those who wrote the "Resumes from Hell" featured in this book of the same name, in which the authors expose hundreds of the most awkward, over-the-top, and downright hilarious resumes ever written. Reading them will help you improve your own resume, and it will give you hope. Just don't do what these people did! Whether they listed too many hobbies, made frightening political or religious statements, or simply gave "too much information," these writers bare their souls in hopes of landing a job. With previous experience such as "perishable manager" and "fanny pack designer," or qualifications like "specializing in the impossible," "Have Passport & Don't Use Tobacco or Firearms," and "Enjoy Dim Sum, Chai and other good things in life," you really wish you could sit in on their job interviews. My favorite chapter is "Graphics from Hell," featuring undecipherable charts, cheesy icons and clip art that some misguided souls used to spruce up their resumes. As professional job recruiters, the authors have seen it all, and their comments and examples prove unequivocally that poetry, spirituality, ranting, bragging, and sloganeering have no place in your resume. This book proves that what you DON'T say is often as important as what you do say.

          Book Description

German cinema of the 1920s is still regarded as one of the "golden ages" of world cinema. Films such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu and The Blue Angel are among the key films defining an age of Germany as a nation uneasy with itself. Directors such as Fritz Lang, F.W. Murnau and G.W. Pabst, having apparently announced the horrors of fascism while testifying to the traumas of a defeated nation, cast long shadows over German cinema to this day.

Weimar Cinema and After offers a fresh perspective on the arguments which view genres and movements such as "films of the fantastic," "Nazi Cinema," "film noir" and "New German Cinema" as typically German contributions to twentieth century visual culture. Elsaesser questions conventional readings which link these genres to romanticism and expressionism and offers new approaches to analyzing national cinema.

Elsaesser argues that German cinema's significance lies more in its contribution to a creation of a community sharing a 'historical imaginary' rather than a 'national identity.' In this respect, German cinema anticipated some of the problems facing contemporary nations in reconstituting their identities by means of media images, memory, and invented traditions.

5 out of 5 stars Revoltingly Bleak and Laughing-out-loud Funny.......2004-11-29

A lot of the entertainment in this book comes from the grisly descriptions of junky lifestyle (e.g., Nico removing the pus from an infected vein with a used syringe, etc.). Also, there's interesting cameo appearances by John Cale and Allen Ginsberg. But the real star is of course Nico. In the beginning, Young describes her as a depressing, hollowed-out drug addict, "... her hands and arms scabbed and scarred by needletracks, and her eyes like a broken mirror." (pg 12) But as I followed the characters from gig to gig, scraping just enough money together to support Nico's habit, followed by the recording of the CAMERA OBSCURA album, then more money and more gigs; through all this, Nico emerges somehow as a sympathetic character, far more interesting than the other eccentrics in her group. At the end, after she dies en route to meeting a drug dealer, I felt sad to see her go.

5 out of 5 stars Move over Celine.......2002-03-08

Having been a Velvets/Nico fan since 1968, I somehow ignored this book until recently, perhaps because of my annoyance with the status the Velvets have attained over the years. (They really were a better band when nobody else had heard of them....) Anyway, to complete my collection I suppose, I bought this book a few weeks ago with very low expectations. What I discovered was a beautifully written book, picaresque, dark, satirical, poignant...James Young writes like a Celine for the twilight of the 20th century. I would eagerly buy another book written by Mr. Young. In short, this book is a masterpiece.

              5 out of 5 stars The Icon's Last Days.......2001-07-23

"Nico-The End" is definitely a better, more intelligent piece of writing then the hard to find "Songs they Never Played on the Radio". "The End" tracks the last years of Nico's life; it is sad and seedy, but has some incredibly funny parts to it. What we get here is a glimpse into Nico's many live shows and her relationship with others in the 80's, particularly the author, her band The Faction, her fans, and John Cale as well as some others. There is part telling about the struggle to make her final recording, "Camera Obscura" and finally her unexpected death. I totally recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the absolutely facsinating life of VU chanteuse and proven solo artist Nico.

              5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.......2000-06-26

This is the most hilarious "rock" book I have ever read. I found myself turning the pages in complete fascination -- bizzare performances, wild parties, weird tour experiences, encounters with luminaries like John Cale, a visit to the motel where Tom Waits used to stay ... etc. And you have to admire Nico for sniffing out drugs anywhere, even behind the then iron curtain & getting high regardless. The funniest part is where Nico takes her first trip on Angel Dust, he he, I'm laughing just thinking about it. The writing style is great. My book has a subtitle not mentioned on this amazon.com page: Songs They Never Play On The Radio, but perhaps that is the UK edition. You don't have to be a fan of Velvet Underground to enjoy this book, it stands on its own feet. Finger licking good.

4 out of 5 stars The Loneliness of Failure.......2000-04-07

This book is tedious, sad, sometimes confusing and sickly funny. In other words, it's a complete success. James Young captures the twilight years of the Velvet Underground's once-beautiful (and unwelcomed) lead vocalist, Nico, in all her drug-addled, unwashed, apathetic glory. He humorously conveys the sad silliness of the burned-out "Queen of Addicts" and the motley crew of cut-rate musicians and scam artists who follow her on several world tours during the 1980s.

Much of this book is dull and montonous. Another bad gig. Another distasteful description of an addict's habits. Another strange character popping up to join the ride for a while. At first, this bothered me. But I ultimately realized that this boredom and repetitiveness is crucial to the book's effectiveness. Failure is not exciting, nor is it climactic.

This book brings an empirical social science perspective to a public issue on which observers, economists, and business gurus have freely unleashed their abstract models and jumbo schemes. Written by internationally acclaimed authors, the chapters engage empirically tractable issues that are basic to any overall understanding of the social origins, structures, and consequences of the current wave of globalization.

                  4 out of 5 stars decent.......2006-03-17

a decent reference. i have only two things to complain: it's too north-american oriented (for example, there is no explanation for 'polish club' or for 'standard french system') and it doesn't have any website or electronic contact for updates/comments etc.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent all-round bridge reference.......2000-12-24

The Official Encyclopaedia of Bridge is an excellent all-round bridge reference. It provides everything you could possibly want to know about bridge. Biographies are well-researched, conventions explained in detail. Obscure coups, endplays, squeezes are provided and explained with diagrammed examples. A great number of pages are dedicated in card combinations and deals with this subject is dealt in a comprehensive and complete manner, a first in bridge literature. I thoroughly recommend this book, my only slight complaint is that the book is getting slightly out of date and perhaps it is time for new edition. Bridge in the internet has grown tremendously between now and the time of print and this subject has only received little coverage in this edition.

                                    Book Description

The way you live in a home and the way you sell it are two different things. That's the premise of Staging*, a concept that teaches you to look at your home through a buyer's eyes and make adjustments to improve its appeal and value.

In any real estate market, Staged homes sell faster or sell for more money—or both. With Home Staging, you'll learn how to play up your home's strong points and improve its presentation. By rearranging furniture, trimming overgrown bushes, painting a room, and clearing out the clutter, Home Staging will help you spotlight your property for a fast, profitable sale.

Filled with organizing tips and checklists, plus before-and-Staged photographs that dramatically show how Staging can transform your home inside and out, Home Staging has all the answers you'll need when looking to increase the sale price of your home.

*Staging is a federally registered trademark of StagedHomes.com

                                    1 out of 5 stars A trashy commercial.......2007-09-15

This book has convinced me that hiring a home stager trained by the author or her company would be a disaster. The only way this book could have 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon is if Barb Schwarz's employees and her ASP trainees are writing the good reviews.

Eighty-five percent of this book is a commercial for the author's business, 10% is common sense. The remaining 5% suggests projects, such as a headboard made of paper plates, which could only make a potential home buyer question the taste and judgement of the home owner. This book is a testament to poor taste and Barb Schwarz's ego.

2 out of 5 stars Only written for the wealthy?.......2007-09-05

Books and magazines frequently choose wealthier homes to show pics of staging. Don't authors realize a lot of us live in apartments, condos, mobile homes and the like? Why purchase a book/magazine if it doesn't fit my life style?

1 out of 5 stars Dont waste your time or money.......2007-09-01

This book was dreadful. More than half of the book was the author telling you over and over and over again how she is the creator of home staging. Content wise, there is very little that you dont already know. There are very few before and after photos and non would be judged to be good example of good furniture placement or design. I would suggest "Dress your house for Success" or "Using What you have Decorating".

1 out of 5 stars Useless bit of self-promotion by Barb Schwarz - a waste of money.......2007-02-17

This book tells you what you already knew - clean, declutter, fix broken stuff, and clean up the yard. That's about it. The reason the book is more than ten pages long is that it is chock full of the author's stories about how wonderful she is and what a staging pioneer she is. I really wish I hadn't wasted my money on this fluffy piece of advertising.

                                    2 out of 5 stars Written Infomercial.......2007-02-11

Reading this book is like reading the script for an infomercial. The entire purpose of the book was profit for Barb Schwarz in book sales and additional customers. At least once per page, sometimes once per paragraph she re-credits herself with inventing the entire concept of Home Staging from the name to the work to the profession. The only person to take more credit for anything was Al Gore and the infamous internet issue. There are maybe 10 total ideas/concepts for actual home owners to implement themselves, but they are very general. The other 200 pages are various ways of reiterating that Barb Schwarz created the concept of Home Staging, all homes should be staged before sale, and that the home owner should hire a licensed, professional Home Stager, preferably trained by Barb Schwarz. If your purpose of buying this book is to find out the value of Home Staging, or justifying the cost of professional Home Staging to an unwilling seller (spouse, relative, client) than this is a very useful book. If you are a home owner that already believes you should stage your home and are looking for creative ideas on how to do it yourself - don't bother with this book. The book does give insight in how to choose a professional Home Stager, what to look for when interviewing Stagers for your project, what to expect from Home Staging, the value of it, and general ideas of what a Home Stager can and should do for you. I agree with the reviewer who said, "Not for Do It Yourselfers." For Do It Yourselfers The Designed To Sell book is quite a bit better for what is out there that is very current. 50 Simple Steps to Sell Your House for More Money in Any Market by Ilyse Glick is also better, but not as current.
