A Balance of Power!.......2001-01-27
As a mature male, I found Griselda Polock's observations reach far beyond the medium of art production alone. It enters on the core of basic human relations in an ever-changining materialistic environment dominated by a male ethos.
A hidden male agenda lies quietly in waiting to be explored. The concept of "modern" is amplified to the point of no return; leaving the time-worn question on the reconciliation between the sexes open to further discussion.
Book Description
The publication of Vision and Difference marked a milestone in the development of modern art history. Its introduction of a feminist perspective into this largely male-oriented discipline made shockwaves that are still felt forcefully today.
Drawing upon rich resources of feminist cutural analysis hitherto little applied to the visual arts, Griselda Pollock offers concrete historical analyses of key moments in the formation of modern culture to reveal the sexual politics at the heart of modernist art. Crucially, she not only provides a feminist re-reading of the work of canonical male Impressionist and Pre-Raphaelite artists including Edgar Degas and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, but also re-inserts into art history their female contemporaries - women artists such as Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt. Casting her critical eye over the contemporary art scene, Pollock discusses the work of women artists such as Mary Kelly and Yve Lomax, highlighting the problems of working in a culture where the feminineis still defined as the object of the male gaze.
Now published with a new introduction by Griselda Pollock, Vision and Difference remains as powerful and as essential reading as ever for all those seeking not only to understand the history of the feminine in art but also to develop new strategies for representation for the future.

Same Book, Puffed-Up New Edition.......2004-12-18
Professor Pollack, a pioneer of feminist criticism and art history, has written a classic in Vision and Difference. This new edition has a cover with her surname in bold letters, Pollack, as if playing off her famous name. An unsturdy introduction adds a page to the length of the book.
After careful study of both editions, one will find no textural additions to this edition.
The title has been changed by juxtaposing words so that the first edition does not appear along side this version.
The first edition is titled Vision and Difference: FEMININITY, FEMINISM and the Histories of Art. Two words have been switched.
Makes you think..........2004-12-15
I had to read portions of this for an Anthropology class and from what I read I had to read the rest of it. Reading this book brings up many thoughts, not just about feminism or the feminist movement, but about society's habit of labeling people and groups of people in general. It's not a light read, but is worth it if you can finish it.

Genuine Man and his Fascinating journey thru Jewelry design.......2007-08-09
I read the book and enjoyed all the photos from cover to cover!
Robert Lee Morris is such a great natural designer, very genuine as human being.
I found many similarities with his life and mine as a jewelry designer.
I discovered that my first pieces were much like his style, when I didn't knew who he was and never saw his work before.
Totally inspiring. You can be tempted to tear and frame the photos of the book as art pictures!

Beautiful Book.......2005-10-12
This book is more that the best expected. I am familiar with The RLM jewelry line and know this artist to be innovative and creative. This book gives an fascinating look at the man as a sculptor and jewelry designer.
Robert Lee Morris - Innovative and Prolific Jewelry Designer.......2005-07-31
In a world of cookie cutter jewelry where factories manufacture the latest trendy piece, thank goodness there is Robert Lee Morris. RLM is a very spiritual designer who is attuned to nature, human sensuality and an unending stream of creativity. I have never been to his studio in Soho, NYC. But I do buy his stunning silver jewelry on QVC. Whenever he is on tv, he presents pieces that are not only unique in design, but pieces that beg to be touched. His pieces are filled with spirit and love. For example, he created a twisted heart bracelet where the hearts literally flow into one another, rather than connecting them with the usual chunky links. He created a large molded heart ring that has FORGIVE inscribed on the inside. He takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary.
I encourage those who are not familiar with his pieces to try a pair of his exquisite earrings. I also encourage all current and future jewelry designers to study this book and his pieces. Here is one of the most innovative and prolific designers of our time. Study his book, go to his Soho studio, and check out the shopping site that sells his jewelry. You will be glad you did.
One more thing. RLM's book is not just a history of his jewelry and how it was made and sold over the past thirty-five years. This book is a history of fashion, makeup and accessories and how they were designed and sold via the runway over the past three decades. This is a fascinating history of some of our most famous designers and the marriage of fashion and accessories.
MORE THAN JUST BEAUTIFUL.......2004-10-23
Women have been adorning themselves with jewelry and body art almost since time began. What earlier generations did not have was the imagination of award winning designer Robert Lee Morris whose bold, dramatic creations in gold and silver are worn by the famous, such as Madonna, Oprah, Cher, as well as the lady next door.
The son of an air force pilot and a former fashion model, Morris was exposed at any early age to differing cultures. A four year stint in Japan left him with lasting memories of the beauty and customs of that country. Undoubtedly, this experience and others have been an inspiration to him.
"I had a very powerful vision in my head when I first began to make jewelry," he writes. "It was this specific, cinematic image that grounded me and gave me a sound place from which all my work sprang in the early years, from 1970 to 1980. I could envision a post-apocalyptic world populated by Amazon women....."
A major jump start for his career occurred when he was chosen to design the jewelry for Donna Karan's collections. Ms. Karan, an unabashed fan, wrote the foreword for this volume. "Robert's designs are remarkably sensual, They beg to be touched. When you hold or wear them they become part of you....."
Evidently Calvin Klein and Karl Lagerfeld shared her enthusiasm for Morris also did collections for both of them.
Morris's designs have been among the most wanted and noted for over 25 years, and he claimed the Platinum Guild International Grand Prize for Design Award in 1999. He continues to offer collections in his signature style of ethnic flavor and high fashion flair.
Enjoy and wish as you leaf through this lush 180 page volume with 230 full-color illustrations. With his candid, chatty narrative Morris proves himself to be a gifted communicator as well as designer.

Book Description
Some might think that the corporate scandals of 2002 could make it difficult to find anything funny about today's business world. But When Body Language Goes Bad proves it will take more than that to slow down the inventive wit of Scott Adams, who clearly is never at a loss for finding hysterical things to mock in corporate life. This marks the 21st collection of Adams' wildly popular comic strip, Dilbert, which is featured in more than 2,000 newspapers worldwide. This book updates loyal readers on the so-called careers of Dilbert, Alice, Wally, Asok the intern, and other regulars as they wallow through pointless projects, mismanaged company takeovers, futile team-building exercises, and other inane company initiatives like the "name the rest room" contest. In addition to the strips' familiar characters, this collection showcases Adams' masterful ability to create hilarious "guest stars." There's the network design engineer known as Psycho Hillbilly, who was going for the gentle biker look until he decided it was overdone. Then, there's M. T. Suit, who is merely an empty suit walking the office halls spewing corporatese, such as "promising to enhance core competencies by leveraging platforms." Adams says that about 80 percent of his initial ideas come from his 150 million-plus readers. Those worldwide readers are sure to celebrate the humor found in When Body Language Goes Bad, his latest satirical look at the modern workplace.

Just Dilbert.......2007-01-25
It really gives you a reason for laughs. Dilbert never lets me down on that matter.
Fighting the daily grind.......2004-02-24
Adams does it again. One wonders where he keeps finding all the ideas, and they are so right on. Dilbert plods his way through seemingly useless existence lost in cubic space while his dog and garbage man seem much wiser. Wally never does any work, and we learn of the "Wally period" where you wait to begin a project in case it is cancelled. Dogbert sells nuclear warheads to the Elbonians and pointy hair brings in a man-hating feminist to harass the troops. Catbert the evil HR director thinks up new ways to torment employees. Classic Dilbert at its best. Send a copy to your own pointy haired boss for any occasion.
A Chance Read.......2003-11-14
Frankly speaking, Dilbert never been my fav Comic Strip and I usually preferred Archie, Betty, Jughead and Veronica next to the yester years Picture Mags 'Photo Romance' and 'Darling' which had cool pic stories. On net, I happened to subscribe Dilbert Dose a day comic strip in my Mail box and became a fan of Dilbert. Scott Adams books drew my attention and I 'Chance Read' this book "When Body Language Goes Bad" through a friend's collection. There's been a satirical humour with tip on iceberg you call - How to avoid work, outwit the boss and updating the readers on Dilbert's careers, projects, take over of companies that got mis-managed and team building excercises. For most of the employees, a Boss is the worst nightmare and there's this dump-loads of work piled up. The weasel ways comes in great handy tip to outwit the boss at critical hours and this book, even for a novice is good read and know the characters that play its roles. All a way into the workplace, the coworkers plots and the Boss's unscruplous ways. I've yet to read a lot of this stuff but this one's good for sure to begin with. A chance read yet a 'Good Read' and a 'Good Pick' too.
Everything`s back in "snafu" order...........2003-06-20
The last 2-3 Adam`s Dilbert collections were lackin on edge somewhat. Not that you can ever go wrong by acquring a Dilbert comic but Adams has accustomed his readers to a very high niveau of humor.
"When body language goes bad" is a tremendous return to top form for the Dilbert creator.
New and very welcome twists take place as Dilbert gets downsized, the Pointy Haired Boss becomes an engineer (even if it is for just a day), Wally takes Asok under his wings to teach him his "deepest secrets" on how to avoid work, Dilbert`s mother adopts an even more caustic attitude than wè had seen her up to now, and of course Alice is as usual the aggro force of the corporate corridors.
Wally keeps stealing the show as usual and the Head of Human resources (or "livestock") comes up with new and improved ways to torture the already overtortured souls of the employees.
On a downside, as has been the case with almost all of Adams`last albums Dogbert and especially Ratbert (possibly the 2nd cultest character of the series) seem to have taken second stage.`
This is bizzare on one hand but understandable on the other as most of the Dilbert characters have a strong fan base but it`s also a fact that Dogbert is one of the driving forces of the comic. As for Ratbert, yes, it can be a personal preference thingie.
It`s probably getting boring to say "a must buy" for each new Dilbert publication, but, as the faithful know, it`s an addiction.
Up to his best.......2003-04-25
Okay so I love this sort of thing, but this is up to his best and will make perfect gifts for everyone I know with a bithday this year.

It is like animal kingdom, only it is about your typical greedy 80's yuppy, who only needs a change of cloths, an SUV, and a cell phone to merge with the modern world.
Fun to put side to side books on Black History. And yes, I'm a honky so deal with it, us white people are about as dumb as they come, with nothing between our legs...
...then again, look at Operah.
Book Description
This is the book that restarted the James Dean cult by celebrating him as the cool, defiant visionary of pop culture who made adolescence seem heroic instead of awkward and who defined the style of rock ’n’ roll’s politics of delinquency. The only book to fully show how deliberately and carefully Dean crafted his own image and performances, and the product of still unequalled research, vivid writing, intimate photographs, and profound meditation,
James Dean: The Mutant King has become almost as legendary as its subject.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Dean Bio Starter.......2007-07-24
For the reviewer who gave a lengthy discussion on Elvis...enough already! So there may be a few factual errors...show me a bio that doesn't have a few and I'd be very surprised. This bio nails James Dean perfectly, and paints a picture that makes it easy to understand why he remains an icon over 50 years after his death. Well written it paints an indepth portrait of the person who represents so many different things to different people. Ignore the negative reviews on here.
Not the best.......2006-02-17
If you're shopping for one and only one biography of the Boy Wonder, you'd do well to pass up on David Dalton's The Mutant King.
Although a good read in places, there's a fair number of factual errors in the book not found in the best Dean bios; and Dean's relationship with Rogers Brackett, the successful and well-connected 50's radio director who played a key role in Jimmy's success as an actor, is not a subject of discussion in Dalton's book. Brackett receives four or five mentions, nothing more.
I found Dalton's writing style off-putting in a number of places. Following are three samples.
1) On page 63 Dalton writes: "Jimmy's college days in California slip out of focus from reel to reel in a hazy flashback where grainy rooms and sandy beaches swallow him up with their tiny grey mouths." (The thought of such rooms and beaches swallowing him up with "their tiny grey mouths" is just goofy.)
2) On page 67, Dalton has: "While adept at pulling friends into his personal atmosphere, Jimmy was less successful in packs." So far, fine, but then he writes: "The very structure resisted his form of magnetism, their diffused mass offering him no focal point and their number giving them bearings with which to get a bead on his oscillating nature." (What.Ever.)
3) Lastly, on page 68 we find: "By the end of the semester [at UCLA] Jimmy's interests were mainly in the theater. His [frat] brothers resented the fact that he spent so little time in their sweaty realm and found his obsession a little suspicious, for they were as gossipy about genders as a Latin grammar." (Gossipy about genders as a Latin grammar, I submit, makes no sense whatsoever.)
Buyers should also beware that Dalton has a weakness for the unheard-of term---like "omphalos," "orthicon," and "strega." (I own two unabridged dictionaries, and damned if I could find "strega," in the sense intended by Dalton, in either of them. I had to do some online digging to find out the word refers to a sorceress of some kind. The question is, why choose the obscure "strega" over "sorceress"? The former term, after all, has none of the connotative power of the latter.) I still can't quite fathom what Dalton means by the "adenoidal fury" with which Dean slammed his fists into a juvenile detective's desk in Rebel Without a Cause. The same peculiar, senseless use of "adenoidal" is found in his picture book, James Dean: American Icon, where he speaks of the filming of Rebel as being "unabashedly adenoidal." ??? (Get his Icon for the wealth of photos; the text is largely indigestible.)
But enough. The book I would recommend to someone who wants to read just one biography of James Dean is Donald Spoto's Rebel: The Life and Legend of James Dean. It's well-written, accurate, objective, in-depth, and absorbing. Spoto, by the way, has authored a number of internationally best-selling biographies of such greats as Dietrich, Monroe, Olivier, and Hitchcock.
Well done, Mr. Dalton.......2001-03-25
In the slew of Dean Biographies I've read, this came to me third. And I was in general, very privelaged to read it. It is concise, thorough, factual, and eloquent. Favorite parts in all Dean bios are his chilhood years, his 3 years before success, and experiences while making his 3 films- and this book does wonderful justice to those times. You'll learn about his sex, loves, and hot&cold personality. There were a few(only a few) moments where some details lagged and dragged slightly. Those thoughts, however, disapeared instantly with the next sentence I would come upon in the book. It's in my top three Dean bios list-probably #3. Please let yourself discover Jimmy. Buy this and several other of his bios and take them on a vacation(or some time and place where you can commit yourself to them)and devoure them."James Dean-Boulevard of Broken Dreams", and "Live Fast Die Young", are two other necessaries. This is a must read. Happy Readings!
For the Most Part, a Good Biography.......2000-06-15
Dalton's biography of James Dean is a very good book about the cinemic legend. He seems to have interviewed many people who were close to Dean, and he focuses as much on the real man as on the icon. Dalton also writes quite well.
The only problem I have with this book is I wonder how carefully it was fact-checked. There was at least one blatant gaffe in the book, which alleged that James Dean was a big fan of Elvis Presley. Now every Elvis fan knows Presley was a huge fan of James Dean, even to the point where he is said to have memorized all of Dean's lines in the classic "Rebel Without a Cause." The question I have is, was Dean really a fan of Elvis?
On page 195 of the paperback 1983 edition, a friend of Dean's is quoted as saying how much James Dean loved the Elvis hit "Hound Dog," and how Dean loved to wake people up in the middle of the night by calling them on the phone and playing the record when they said "Hello." It's a compelling tale.
Unfortunately, this story cannot be true. By the end of 1955, Elvis had signed on to RCA and had obtained Col. Tom Parker as manager. Elvis was still a regional performer in 1955, and his Sun recordings (today big collectors' items) sold only modestly in the South. Elvis did make appearances on "The Louisiana Hayride," and he made some other appearances on local and regional television programs, but it wasn't until January 1956, when he made his first national television appearance on the Dorsey Brothers program "Stage Show," that he became a sensation. Furthermore, Elvis did NOT record "Hound Dog" until July of 1956, almost a year after Dean's death. Now it is possible Dean might have heard "The Louisiana Hayride" or bought any of Elvis' five Sun singles, but more likely he, like most of America in 1955, had never heard of Elvis. This blatant error, while only taking up one paragraph in the book, calls into question how accurate the rest of the book is. Dalton doesn't call this tall tale into question, so the gullible reader is led to believe Dean was a big fan of Elvis. Since I haven't seen a newer edition of this book, it's possible the error was corrected, but I doubt it.
Because people's memories can fade or they can simply exaggerate, most biographies have to be read with caution. Even though I enjoyed the book and refer to it often, it is certainly no exception.
An Unexpectd Pleasure.......1998-04-27
James Dean is in own words is a walking contradiction. This book offers rich insights into his condition. They will surprize you, and also you will begin to understand why the legend is alive and thriving today. James Dean was a very modern persona. Though the book contains all the facts you would want to know about his life, it goes further, showing how James Dean carefully made himself into what he means to us. Don't skip this one.

Here's a great new journal designed for the introspective poet or the accomplished singer-songwriter. Our musical journals have been strong sellers (The Musician's Notebook sold more than 100,000 copies), and this handsome parchment lyricist's diary promises to follow suit. There's plenty of space for penning soulful lyrics, with inspiration and commiseration in the form of quotes from artists, writers, and musicians, such as Leonard Bernstein, Gilda Radner, and Ernest Hemingway.

No matter how intimidated or how blocked, any writer can tap into the vast oceans of creativity within--simply by following the exercises in this book.
Broken into small steps, each exercise is easy and takes only minutes to do. Yet each one forms a wave that brings with it a rush of ideas, images, and scenes as it crests. The words surge and flow past inhibitions and dangerous perfectionism--for every level of writer.

Recommended for beginners.......2007-05-10
As with any book on writing, whether it works for you depends on your skill level, experience, and what you're looking for. Personally, I found the exercises interesting but a little too vague and disconnected in terms of purpose -- all in all, this would be a perfect book for a beginning writer who wants to write but doesn't know where or how to start. For me, the most helpful section was the chapter on jump-starting a stalled work in progress, but even so I didn't find it worth the book's purchase price.
An innovative book for writing ideas.......2005-11-23
I have been writing off and on for years and taken writing workshops. The format I am sure is useful to beginning writers, but I found her writing suggestions to be novel and really got the creative juices flowing once again. The great thing about the assignments was that the writing went a totally different direction then what I thought it might do at the beginning. There were even times I thought, 'I can't do this,' but somehow deep within myself I found ideas I didn't know existed with true feelings. I have used several of her techniques to give a rewrite some new oomph. The writing truly took over and you got into a "zone." The only thing better than this book is taking the internet class with Ms. Ayers and getting wonderful insight and feedback from her and classmates. I highly recommend it.
deceptively simple.......2004-07-16
The exercises in this book really work. I've read other good books designed to stimulate the writer, but this book is different. Even though I didn't fully believe that the simple exercises would work, they did! They worked by getting me (almost tricking me) beyond my critical, logical mind. I was often literally surprised at the words and ideas that came from this deep place within. Not only do I feel like I now have tools for my future writing, I feel like I have gained insight into the creative process; specifically, MY creative process!
Like TNT for Writer's Block.......2004-07-12
The innovative, creative-friendly, excercises in this book are nothing short of a way to blast the cobwebs out of your writing. This is not a book you read -- it's a course you do. And in the process you tap into deep streams within yourself that, especially if you are an experienced writer, you may have buried away years ago. It's an exploration that can only help.
The best writing book around.......2004-07-12
I've stumble along for years, trying different writing strategies by different authors, without much success or satisfaction. "Writing the Wave," however, has changed all that. For the last year, I have been working through the book - first alone, and then (for the last two months) under the direction of Ms. Ayres herself through her online writing course at creativewritingcenter.com. The exercises in the book have enriched my thinking and writing, giving me a greater command of theme, structure, and imagery. Every time I work through one of her exercises - even the third or fourth time on the same one - I continue to surprise myself with words and thoughts and emotions I never knew I had in me. The book and its exercises have exposed a vein in me that I look forward each day to opening. For the first time in my life - although it is still hard work - I actually enjoy writing. If you are patient and give yourself over to the process Ms. Ayres espouses, you, too, may find your voice, or if you have already found it, learn to use it in new and exciting ways. And fear not, you don't need to sign up for the writing course to benefit from the book. It's a beauty, challenging, offbeat, and fun.

A truly wonderful book. However there is a crucial element that must be addressed in light of what is coming down the pike at us "Girls". If you read Arnold's The Great Bust Ahead (or visit the book's website at thegreatbustahead.com) you will gain insights into what may be the greatest depression in history beginning just a few years from now. This will probably affect women the most, and women (and men) of color more than others. So, whatever us Girls can make by following Glinda's advice needs to be protected (i.e. not lost in the coming depression) by reading Arnold's advice.
