Extremely Useful Book.......2001-11-07
This book is an excellent overview of the lives and careers of some key Surrealist women artists - and it was a wake-up call for me, when I realised that, despite several years of tertiay study in the field of Art History, the only artists I knew anything about was Frida Kahlo.
A good summary of some neglected figures in art.
Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement.......2000-04-21
Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement contains interesting and useful biographical information, color illustrations and some of the major female contributors to the surrealist movement including Frieda Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, and Leonor Fini. Chadwick provides the reader with useful biographical information that may have influenced the artists work. Women Artists contains an easy to use index , a list of the illustrations and their location in the book, and a brief biography of each author. This book is a wonderful reference for research or for personal interest.
Book Description
This lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced book is intended for those interested in fashion and graphic design of the 60's and 70's from a creative and historical standpoint, plus the huge number of people who remember Biba from the period with much affection.

Very Dissapointed.......2007-08-14
I found out about Biba while looking through a Kevin Aucoin book, he had done the make up of model Kate Moss in the style of a Biba girl. It was a beautiful picture and I just couldn't stop looking at it. The look was both ethreal gypsy and beauty. I had to find out what biba was, so I started doing research on the internet. I bought the Biba Experience exspecting it to capture a time and place. I wanted to see pictures of the people who shopped at Biba, pictures of people wearing Biba clothes I wanted to see the Biba look I wanted pictures from magazines and models and everyday people from that time. Sadly the Biba Experience is lacking in all that. While I found the information on the founder of Biba nice and infomative that same information can be found on the internet. The book had pictures of the store but no people in it, nothing that could really invoke that time and place . There were pictures of a collection of biba clothes worn by current day models that just wasn't very inspiring. I wouldn't recommend getting this book at all.
Experience Biba.......2007-07-16
I first read this book last year and have been devoted to Biba design ever since, this groovy fashion label started in the swinging sixties and went down in a blaze of glory in the sinful seventies. As the back of the book says "Biba fulfilled the rock '&' roll promise to live fast, die young and leave a beautiful corpse". As someone with an obsessive passion for Art Nouveau & Art Deco, the 1960s & 1970s and classic rock I was taken with Barbara Hulanicki's retro design ethos. Mrs. Hulanicki and her business partner husband Stephen Fitz-Simon began the venture in 1964 London as a mail order business that swiftly grew until 1975 when it spectacularly collapsed. This is the story of one woman's ill fated and unconventional conception of a new way of shopping.
The Biba Experience is a history of her vision from small and intimate boutique in Abingdon Road to a large 1930s department store in the old Derry & Toms Building in Kensington High Street. She renovated and restored this grand department store (called Big Biba) in a sympathetic manner, retaining and expanding its original Art Deco features. Mrs. Hulanicki believed that the retail experience should be memorable for the buying public and appeal to a youthful crowd, as most shops then did not. It piped rock music through Art Deco styled loudspeakers and people could sit in the front windows watching the world go by while having a cigarette and a coffee. In its time it played a major role in making London the hippest city in the world, rock and film stars could be seen shopping there and it had a powerful effect on 60s and 70s British design. As the book explains the employees who worked there and the customers who shopped there remember it with great fondness, even people who never experienced it firsthand (like me) are affected by its legend. Biba sold everything, its own clothes, hats and footwear, to perfume and records. Big Biba also had a food hall that sold every type of gourmet food imaginable, unusual for Britain of that era. There was a hall at the top level of the Derry & Toms building called "the rainbow room" where one could dine while watching a rock band.
The second half of the book is taken up by a photographic catalogue of a private collection of Biba clothes and shoes. Pari owns the largest collection in the world of Biba clothing and memorabilia, in this book she puts them on display for all to see. The clothes are a mixture of contemporary fashions and garments inspired by the golden age of Hollywood and late 19th and early 20th century dress reform. Sure the clothes have for the most part dated for they are very much of their era, but they are still elegant and beautiful nonetheless. It is interesting to note that Biba is back in business again after a hiatus of over thirty years but I do not know if Barbara Hulanicki is involved, they have wisely retained the retro couture look and feel of its infamous predecessor. I don't know if Biba could exist today in a climate where multi-national corporations are creating a banal and insipid mono-culture, it was too non-conformist. If you are a fashion victim or just have a passing interest in fashion history I think you will enjoy this lavish coffee table book.
Extraordinary, an absolute pleasure........2007-02-14
Barbara Hulanicki's Biba was less a clothing brand or department store(though that would have been enough!), than an utter immersion in a lifestyle.
If you've been sadly disappointed by the other books about Biba for having far too few pictures of the stores or the cothing, your wishes have been granted.
The sad demise of such a marvellous line simply makes a well written and thorough record like this more precious.
Buy, enjoy, and wish one could go back in time.
Magic gone like Biba's gone.......2005-12-17
I, too, was there in the late '60s, living and working in London with Biba just across the street beckoning daily. The text in this book is informative and interesting to anyone who has done retail or wants to know about its vagaries, and the photos are superb. But it is one person's collection, and for me, the visual essence and excitement of Biba is missing. Maybe it's the fact that there are no customers with their enthusiasm, or maybe I'm just missing the amazing array of color and design that hit you at each entry into Biba's, which the book does not really capture.
Reliving the magic!.......2005-03-21
As someone who was "there"-- a young New Yorker working for the fashion press in the late '60s, frequent traveler to London (first stop: Biba), habitue of Bergdorf's Biba Boutique for Mahogany lipstick and lucky enough to have a British friend sending catalogues and clothes, I can honestly say reading Alywyn Turner's book on Biba was like living it again. He accurately and lovingly recreates the temper of the times and the uniqueness that was Biba. He also takes you way behind the scenes (where even Barbara Hulanicki did not go in her autobiography) as to the crash and burn in 1975. I did not "get" Big Biba either, and have always felt a little guilty about that. Nice to know I was not alone. Both a beautiful coffee table book of gorgeous photogaphs, ephemera and loving detail shots of the garments. I understand Barbara was grumbling about this book and did not cooperate with the author. I think she missed being part of a great tribute. Oh yes, I never kept any of my Biba clothes or stuff. You can imagine my regret!

best part of the day.......2007-09-11
This book is brilliant. I have read it over and over to my 4 year old son since he was born, and my 18 month old daughter - and it is because of the wonderful results. They squeal with delight and anticipation as they know where the kisses are coming next- holding there feet out, or hiding their chin. And we all love every page and closeness of a laughing, if not squirmy, goodnight.
Besides being one of the best ways to end the day, I also like how the book outlines the different people who make up the family sharing in kissing goodnight, and I suppose there must be some learning in there of body parts as you read the next line of where the kisses are going. But even without these additional features, the book is great and highly recommend it to any family with a newborn to toddler.
Very Sweet and Endearing Read.......2007-08-10
This has become a staple in our household. We read it every night and of course, play it out too! My daughter loves this book and counting the kisses!
Excellent book for Mommy and Baby!!!.......2007-06-27
I have purchased this for my daughter and as gifts. It is a wonderful board book, which invites interaction between momma and baby with plenty of playful kisses!!!
cute.......2007-06-08
My almost 2 year old daughter likes this book but not as much as "Daddy Hugs 123" by the same author...she LOVES that one. This one is cute though and she does like all the kisses she gets when she reads it, not that she doesnt get enough ALL day :-)
Very Sweet Book!.......2007-05-12
I love reading this book to my 20 month old daughter - she gets to learn about counting, family, and body parts and we get to snuggle and kiss the whole way through.

One of my top five children's books.......2007-08-13
I have purchased several of these books for expectant mothers to make sure as many children and parents as possible have a chance to share in the fun and loving theme of this book. I have five grandchildren and this is one of their favorites....as well as mine.
How Many Kisses Do You Want Tonight?.......2007-07-05
This is the greatest book for grandmas. My grandson loves it and this is our special book that we read together every night he is with me. After we are done reading he tells me how many kisses he wants!
Sweet Bedtime Story.......2006-01-10
My 18 month old daughter loves this story and so do I. It's such a sweet bedtime story that I love to read it to her. She's really into animals so this story is great for her since it focuses on animals getting ready to go to sleep. I always love to cuddle and give her lots of kisses throughout the story.
Great bedtime book.......2005-08-01
This book is a favorite amongst my house. It is interactive in a cute way. It's a great way to enhance children's learning skills by simply giving good night kisses. This book is included in all of my baby shower gifts, so others can enjoy reading it to their little ones.
Delightful.......2004-12-11
Every words sings in this delightful bedtime counting book. The illustrations are a feast for the eyes. We taught our children to count in various languages using ... kisses. It's the best way!

Customer Reviews:
educational and fun!.......2007-07-24
Yes you could look at this and say it is promoting unhealthy eating habits much more however; children respond to the fun nature of using candy. Have fun! I am a teacher and let my children use this at least once a year.
It's What Kids Love!.......2001-09-01
Kids at the library during read-aloud time love this book. Yes, it's Hersheys, but I think too much is made of the parents issues with commercialism. Kids have interest, of course, in what interests them, and chocolate interests them. As there are no counting books about brussel sprouts, I guess we can't experiment with the dreadful little things, too. The bottom line is that they are fun and hold interest better than other math-skills books.
Edible math.......2001-06-26
There are plenty of math manipulatives besides a brand-name chocolate for children to use to have fun solving math problems. How about carrot or celery sticks that they can dip in nutritious yougurt? M & Ms have their own math book too. Why hook children on this commercialism when there are so many healthy alternatives?

Book Description
These humorous stories by Ephraim Kishon are full of the stuff of life itself - children, dogs, neighbors, domestic appliances, plumbers, bureaucrats, swindlers, taxi drivers, publishers, media men, tax authorities, policemen, touched one and all by that spark of lunacy which makes it worth turning the page to see what happens next.
"I became a satirist", Kishon told an interviewer from the "International Herald Tribune", "when I learned that mankind is insane".
Like all great writers, Kishon has given life to a cast of unforgettable characters. Enter Ervinke, the law-bending alter ego of Kishon himself; Tsuries, the three-eyed melon seller; Stucks, the ever-absent plumber; and Inspector Fishbaum, the scourge of tax-evaders everywhere.
Although the background to many of Kishon's stories is Israel, their hilarity is universal.
Customer Reviews:
The man knows humor........2007-07-29
I`ve read Mr. Kishon`s books in the 1960`s about the craziness that defined the modern Israel as he witnessed it`s history firsthand. When I visited Israel 15 years later, it was as if I stepped into the pages of any of his books. It`s only too sad that this man isn`t the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, ...heck, Ephraim could replace the entire Knesset. His book are priceless.
More books need to be translated!.......2005-12-30
I giggled all the way from Frankfurt to Munich. People in my train compartment gave me strange looks, but I just couldn't stop laughing. Tears were running down my face! I don't even remember which of Kishon's books I was reading, it was in German. Unfortunately I could only find this one translated into in English. All of his books were very popular in Germany during the 70's and 80's. They probably still are.
Kishon pokes fun at everyone and everything. His descriptions of customs, friends, politics, religion are very funny and you just have to laugh because they are so totally unusual and unexpected. His life and most of his tales take place in Israel, and it is very easy to think oneself into the situations he describes.
If you want to laugh and learn something at the same time, this book is wonderful.
Very funny indeed.......2005-09-07
Kishon is a writer whose humor appeals especially to those who know the horrors of petty bureacracy and the endless minor everyday insults of domestic family life. These are his specialities . But he is too a chronicler of particular time in Israeli society, and for those who lived in the Israel of the fifties and sixties his work has special relevance.
He may not have been the funniest man in the world but he could be very funny indeed.

Book Description
Steve Giddins has chosen 50 supremely instructive games - some old, some new, and including many that few readers will have seen before. He has annotated these games in detail from a modern perspective, explaining the useful lessons that can be learnt from them, while avoiding the harmful dogma that characterized many older works of this type. Topics include: Attacking the King, Defense, Piece Power, and Endgame Themes. Each game is followed by a recap of the main lessons to be learned.

50 Essential Chess Lessons.......2007-01-13
This book is very hard to read. It is also inaccurate and hard to follow. I want to get a refund on this book.
Great instruction without hiring a Master.......2006-11-23
I was very impressed with this book when I read it. It is very instructive for any player beyond the beginning stage and is written in a manner that is like having a master with you to explain what is going on in the game. The author avoids going into any detailed analysis in order to fully explain the ideas in the game.
The games are chosen for their instructive value in illustrating the theme under discussion. In a way, the book is reminiscent of Chernev's "The Most Instructive Chess Games Ever Played." But, I consider this book to be even better.
The serious student of the game cannot go wrong in purchasing this book and by reading it will gain greatly in understanding.
Great Lessons using Games for the Intermediate Chess Player.......2006-10-12
This is one of the best books that uses games as lessons. As a couple of the reviews have pointed it it may not have every move analyzed, but then this is not a book for a lower rated chess player, so it not so critical here.
What is nice is that "50 ESSENTIAL CHESS LESSONS" selects many important themes and is clear and understandable. Among the numerous books using games as lessons, this book is one of the best!
Excellent Book on Lessons using Games.......2006-09-13
Steve Giddins books seem to hit on some of the most important themes for players to learn and improve their ability to understand and play chess better. Gidden's two books, "50 Essential Chess Lessons" and "101 Chess Traps" being my two favorite Giddins books.
In Giddins "50 Essential Chess Lessons" he selects one or two important themes that he is trying to get across. There is exceptional clarity of thought brought onto paper! Mr. Giddins uses a lot of original games, not easy to find (or impossible to find) elsewhere. This is an excellent book for an intermediate player wanting to improve their overall understanding of chess.
Bedrock solid chess instruction.......2006-09-06
<50 Essential Chess Lessons,> by Steve Giddins
When a friend suggested that I take a look at this book, I thought: "Oh great, yet another book aimed at the beginner." Yet this friend persisted - so I scanned the book at the local bookshop. I liked it so much that I purchased a copy for the local chess club. (We raffle off a free chess book at our local tournaments now.) I am also a chess master and teach chess for a living ... so I like to think that I know a thing or two about this subject.
First the basics. The publisher - Gambit Books - does nothing but chess. A solid book, flex cover, firm binding, acid-free pages with minimal 'bleed through,' excellent diagrams, (several per page); and top-notch editing. {You probably won't ever buy a real clunker from this publishing house.}
I thought that this was a good book, but when I got it home, I discovered that I was wrong. To quote Tony the Tiger, its GRRRRREAT!! (I gave it five stars, even though I had said I was not going to do this any more ... I try to save this for exceptional books. Well, maybe this is one of those cases.)
Why? Well let me explain. Most of the time when I recommend a book, some players will complain that "the book's subject matter is over my head," or that "it drowns me in a sea of variations." Not here, think of this as a "Nunn-LITE" book, the main emphasis is on teaching and explanation, and NOT on variations! (Much like Irving Chernev, although this book is in algebraic, of course!)
A Grand-Master once told me (many years ago) that there were only three proven ways to get better. One study method he said was to study COMPLETE master-level games, this book follows that edict to the letter. Fifty (50) nicely annotated games. (I had seen most of the games in this volume before, but the average player will not be familiar with the large percentage of these masterful struggles.)
I would say the main target group would be 1200 - 1799, although players on both ends of this spectrum should enjoy this volume. (I did, and my USCF rating is over 2200.)
There are 50 entries organized into five sections. (Attacking the King, Defence, Piece Power, Pawn Structure and End-Game themes.) All of these are highly instructional and annotated with lots of explanations and entertaining verbiage. For example, Game # 16, (Short-Timman, Tillburg; 1991); can be found on my website. But the player rated below 2000 will DEFINITELY want to review this game with Giddin's polished notes ... it will open many of the secret doors of chess knowledge for you. (Many of the themes and ideas that I commonly try to teach my students in the first 1-2 years are covered by Giddins in his analysis of these 50 instructive contests.)
I "fritzed" about five of these games with the computer, I found NO noticeable mistakes of any kind. I can offer no honest criticisms of this volume. ADVICE: I will note that the serious student will want to use a general reference work on the opening, (like MCO-14); when studying this book, just to see for themselves what the best lines are. (And to familiarize yourself with opening theory.) Additionally, the serious student should use a strong computer program to analyze these games, the author does not even try to examine every tactical possibility ... this would be impossible in a book of this size. (156 pages)
If you enjoy this book and get a lot out of it, then you may want to check out Neil McDonald's book, "Chess, The art of logical thinking," (from the first move to the last); by GM Neil McDonald.
In closing, this is a first-rate book, and I highly recommend it. I am certain that the average player will get a lot out of close study of this work, several of my on-line students recommend this volume to all of their friends. (The author is not one of the most well-known in the chess market, but perhaps this is about to change!)

Seth Godin, one of the world's foremost online promoters, offers his best advice for advertising in Permission Marketing. Godin argues that businesses can no longer rely solely on traditional forms of "interruption advertising" in magazines, mailings, or radio and television commercials. He writes that today consumers are bombarded by marketing messages almost everywhere they go. If you want to grab someone's attention, you first need to get his or her permission with some kind of bait--a free sample, a big discount, a contest, an 800 number, or even just an opinion survey. Once a customer volunteers his or her time, you're on your way to establishing a long-term relationship and making a sale. "By talking only to volunteers, Permission Marketing guarantees that consumers pay more attention to the marketing message," he writes. "It serves both customers and marketers in a symbiotic exchange."
Godin knows his stuff. He created Internet marketer Yoyodyne and sold it in 1998 to Yahoo!, where he is a vice president. Godin delves into the strategies of several companies that successfully practice permission marketing, including Amazon.com, American Airlines, Bell Atlantic, and American Express. Permission marketing works best on the Internet, he writes, because the medium eliminates costs such as envelopes, printing, and stamps. Instead of advertising with a plain banner ad on the Internet, you should focus on discovering the customer's problem and getting permission to follow up with e-mail, he writes. Permission Marketing is an important and valuable book for businesses seeking better results from their advertising. --Dan Ring
Book Description
The man Business Week calls "the ultimate entrepreneur for the Information Age" explains "Permission Marketing" -- the groundbreaking concept that enables marketers to shape their message so that consumers will willingly accept it.
Whether it is the TV commercial that breaks into our favorite program, or the telemarketing phone call that disrupts a family dinner, traditional advertising is based on the hope of snatching our attention away from whatever we are doing. Seth Godin calls this Interruption Marketing, and, as companies are discovering, it no longer works.
Instead of annoying potential customers by interrupting their most coveted commodity -- time -- Permission Marketing offers consumers incentives to accept advertising voluntarily. Now this Internet pioneer introduces a fundamentally different way of thinking about advertising products and services. By reaching out only to those individuals who have signaled an interest in learning more about a product, Permission Marketing enables companies to develop long-term relationships with customers, create trust, build brand awareness -- and greatly improve the chances of making a sale.
In his groundbreaking book, Godin describes the four tests of Permission Marketing:
1. Does every single marketing effort you create encourage a learning relationship with your customers? Does it invite customers to "raise their hands" and start communicating?
2. Do you have a permission database? Do you track the number of people who have given you permission to communicate with them?
3. If consumers gave you permission to talk to them, would you have anything to say? Have you developed a marketing curriculum to teach people about your products?
4. Once people become customers, do you work to deepen your permission to communicate with those people?
And in numerous informative case studies, including American Airlines' frequent-flier program, Amazon.com, and Yahoo!, Godin demonstrates how marketers are already profiting from this key new approach in all forms of media.
Download Description
Seth Godin takes the concept of one-to-one marketing to the next level in this exciting introduction to "permission marketing" -- a dynamic new technique that encourages consumers to seek out information and allows businesses to direct their efforts in the most efficient and effective way. Drawing on his own experiences as founder and president of Yoyodyne -- the first company to create promotions and direct mail campaigns on-line -- and on the success stories of companies like American Airlines and Amazon.com, Godin shows that permission marketing breaks through consumer resistance, creates trust, builds brand awareness, and greatly improves the chances of a sale.
Customer Reviews:
Essential marketing material.......2007-07-14
The permission marketing concepts are essential for all marketers. And of course no one writes a more entertaining read than Godin.
It's not always better to ask for forgiveness than permission.......2007-06-20
Seth Godin consistently churns out great business publications and "Permission Marketing" is no exception.
In a nutshell, it involves allowing your customer to feel more in control of the sales process. By asking for, and obtaining, permission to contact the customer you are increasing your conversion rate as well as gaining intelligence to deliver relevant offers to your client.
I think I read in a book called, "Life By Design," people have something called a reticular activator, which is basically a hyper sensitivity to the things they are interested in buying.
If somebody is in the early stages of buying a Plasma TV, for example, then they would be more receptive to receiving a newsletter regarding state-of-the-art plasma TVs.
It's a great read, especially in the days of ICANN SPAM rules and regulations.
Somewhat dated, but certainly an excellent read.......2007-04-29
Having been published in 1999, the book itself is a little dated. Despite that, this is a must read for anyone in the marketing business. The notion of permission marketing, especially in the context of the internet, is tremendously powerful.
I think a few reviewers have referenced it, but I think for companies looking to adopt Seth Godin's approach, the highest hurdle is the investment necessary to lay the groundwork to build the permission model. As Godin discusses at length, the level of interactivity between the consumer and the seller is taken to a whole new level. It requires companies and markeing departments to develop relationships that ultimately leads to sales. The downside is that it can lengthen the sales cycle.
I think it would be interesting to understand how the new technologies of 2006-7 would play into this idea of permission marketing. From You Tube, to having to get by the increasing amount of Spam.... If I read the book accurately, I think the principles would probably remain the same, its the methods of delivery that have changed.
I am in marketing in a B2B technology company. Internally, we discuss how we can better engage clients, prospects and others. Some of Godin's advice has filtered into those discussions. It is clear that to engage our constituencies over the long term, is much more fruitful than some of the traditional marketing methods.
Anyhow, I could go on, but will leave it at that. I do think that it is a must read for anyone in marketing. Grantd, not everything he suggests may be applicable, but I do believe it can help anyone and any marketing group develop new practices in an effort to draw more client in.
I purchased this book from Amazon. I highly recommend.
New to Seth.......2007-01-30
I have spent more time watching Seth's Blog than reading his books. But recently I bought this book along with purple cows.
I love every aspect of marketing and always appreciate a fresh look at the subject. I like it when people don't follow the norm...and even thought this book is not new to the market I found it refreshing and helping me define exactly what I always knew to be true.
I am about done and looking forward to reading purple cow which I understand to be an expansion of this book.
If you are in this world I would recommend it...
