Customer Reviews:
I would strongly NOT recommend this book........2007-09-24
This review is for those who want to learn Russian language with respect to people who speak this language, to the literature which is written in this language and to the language itself. Those who want extremes and adore to savour ambiguity of criminal world language would not benefit from this review.
Imagine a book contains all the words you turn red of when you hear them, which consists of the worst slang words, a book which is full of scabrous, indecent and improper phrases. Now imagine you bought this book, you got to learn all the words and phrases from it and went to Russia happily picturing yourself talking "real Russian". The least thing you will meet on the Russian streets talking such a "real Russian" would be misunderstanding and aversion. The worst thing - you can be arrested or even beaten up by some aggrieved citizens.
That is not a language we teach our children, it is not the one which is used in good literature, it is not the one which was growing with the country and interlaced with its many-centuries history.
Relax Folks.......2007-09-18
I wouldn't say that Russians walk around saying horrible vulgar things all the time but to hear a Russian swear is to hear a master at work and if one is to visit any Slavic country, it is useful to know what is being said about you
I did a little looking online and saw a few reviews for a book called "Dermo!" and what some of the reviewers say is just silly. They complain that only criminals and reprobates speak as filthy as is in this book. I agree that one would have to have little else to do with their time if they knew all the swears in this book but to say that Russians always talk like they are in church is just not true.
What I have noticed from the vantage point of being an American that understands Russian, so Russians speak freely in front of me not knowing that I understand is this; Russian men and Russian woman are experts at talking in hard slang and swears but they never do it in front of eachother.
If you only learn proper Russian you are missing out.
I think one should learn a few Russian swears even though you may never use them.
This book is full of filth and this is not a bad reflection on the author, It is only so filthy because it is an attempt to list as many vulgarities as possible. That is why you would buy it and anyone picking up a book called Dermo should know that. Relax and don't take it seriously, it's good for a couple laughs.
The "Russian" some RUSSIANS never knew exsisted!.......2006-07-30
This book is definitely not for the faint of heart! Vulgar or not, Topol exposes Mother Russia. Speaking proper Russian will only get a mediocre "C" in a Russian University ... maybe pre-k teaching job . Topol's Russian will get you the presidecency! - This book might explain Rasputin's appeal. One must realize that Russians do not hold much back in the way of expressing one's emotion as opposed to American counterparts...True, foreign speakers have to be mindful of what is said, but that applies to Americans, since we are notoriously personas non-gratas in practically every country we invade. In typical Russian conversation, an adult granddaughter would ask her grandmother " how were 'girls' and if they were getting any bigger (chest) and if her nether was region getting any hairier." Shocking as it might seem, this type of exchange is embedded in the Russian culture, both beautiful and lurid. To take the good, you'll have to swallow the bad...it wouldn't hurt to know a few good words on your next business trip!!The only down side to the book was the lack of accent marks, which my Russian friend had to keep correcting.
Morbid curiosity...........2005-04-04
Somewhat reluctant to buy this book, I let my curiosity get the best of me and am I ever glad! I laughed so hard I nearly fell off my sofa. Will these words ever be used? Maybe not by me, but at least I will know what the taxi driver is grumbling under his breath next time I'm over there. This book contains a few idiomatic expressions that can be used in polite company, and quite a few more that you will need if you end up in a bar, - it covers everything from how to toast to how to "hook-up". More importantly, if you know what insults people, you'll better understand how not to insult people.
Words your mother never taught you........2004-01-25
Using obscenities in a foreign language is risky business -- don't do it. That said, this little book offers a humorous key to Russian vulgarisms. As long as you "look but don't touch," you'll do fine. (One flaw: the accent marks are not given for the Russian, leaving non-natives to guess. But that's not a problem, 'cause you're not going to talk like this, are you?)

"There is no book about Hollywood as riveting as this documentary." - Allan Carr, Vanity Fair There is no question that the 1954 version of A STAR IS BORN holds a special place in the pantheon of classic movies. It was director George Cukor's first foray into musicals, his first color film, and it was, without a doubt, Judy Garland's greatest screen performance. With incredible detail and color, Ronald Haver gives us the fascinating story of the making, marketing and restoration of this groundbreaking classic. Here is how producer Sid Luft orchestrated the deal for his wife, how Cukor was selected to direct, how James Mason was cast to co-star and how Moss Hart's script was developed. Here are the myriad techincal problems, the clashes of personalities and the shocking emotional ups and downs of the film's star. Here, finally, is the author's own mission to restore the film to its original length and glory in the 1980s.

Part Hollywood part Sherlock Holmes Story.......2007-08-12
What an amazing story of how the pieces of this edited masterpiece were found during a painstaking search. The story of the production of the film is riveting, but even more so is the tale of the search for the lost footage. At the end it is slightly disappointing that all of the missing pieces could not be found, but ultimately the book is a celebration because the majority of it was discovered, and in the process, the restoration of this movie served as a catalyst for many films thereafter. Well written and hard to put down once started.
One of the Very Best.......2006-12-27
Not every movie deserves a book of this quality but the movie and the book are perfect matches. What a wonderful read and I highly recommend this book to any fan of the movie, Hollywood, or student of same. Very well done.
Interesting documentary.......2006-11-06
Interesting book about the making of the movie, very detailed, but the language is not suitable for general audiences.
A wonderful study in how to "uncover" a masterpiece!.......1999-03-22
A great book by Mr. Haver, filled with facts on the making of "A Star Is Born", the masterpiece. It also shows that rumors have been wrong for many years,in blaming the high cost of filming on Ms. Garland and also why this masterpiece ended up being a disappointment at the box office, having been cut up by Warner's to appease the movie houses' demands for a shorter version so it could be run for more viewings. A shame, when you consider they would have made more if audiences had been allowed to see it in its entirety, as planned. However, we have this wonderful book to tell us and show us exactly what took place! Thank you again, Mr. Haver!
Book Description
Adorno's study of Austrian composer Alban Berg (1885-1935) is a sui generis document. In addition to Adorno's personal account of of the life and musical works of his mentor, friend, and composition teacher, the book explores the historical and cultural significance of Berg's music, its relationship to that of other nineteenth- and twentieth-century composers, and to the larger issues of contemporary life.
Customer Reviews:
not entirely vintage Adorno, yet lightyears beyond academia.......1999-06-22
Adorno first met Alban Berg in Frankfurt during a festival of new music in June 1924. Excerpts from Berg's opera "Wozzeck" was being performed. Adorno ultimately studied composition with Berg but did not pursue a career as a composer rather Adornor became a brilliant philosopher of negative dialiectics with a profound work on aesthetics, his last major statement. In these short essays on Berg written over the course of his life, Adorno is at his weakest link. They are analytical in content traversing all of Berg. The "First Piano Sonata", The"Lyric Suite" for string quartet. Although brilliant, the complexity of thought we usually encounter in Adorno, dense loci of continuous cross-referencing, and associations of images interspersed with other artisitic genres is not to be found here. And in terms of pure musical analysis this is fairly basic representations, and ultimately not Adorno's possessive thinking realm.Academia today hates Adorno for his philosophical more socially-bound emphasis away from just this kind of note-for-note, moment-to-moment analysis along Schenkerian dimensions. Still there are conceptual meeting places in the center as George Perle's excellent work on the two Berg operas. And academia has much to fear given Adorno's impressive legacy of his writings on music . In this brief volume Adorno's thoughts on Berg's opera "Lulu" is the high point. And in a way we meet the more personal, conversational Adorno, a rare treat.

Between Earth and Sky!
The name Guerrand DiThon has been cursed by his family since the day he disappeaered. When a mysterious plague strikes their beleaguered village, Guerrand's name is invoked again -- as the cause of the disaster.
Bram DiThon, Guerrand's nephew, is more like his uncle than the family would care to admit. A skilled herbalist, Bram has unknowingly turned his skills toward magic. It is to Bram the villagers turn when the plague changes their eyes to onyx, their limbs to snakes, and their flesh to stone.
Unable to stop the unexplainable deaths, Bram sets out to find his missing uncle. He learns that Guerrand is the High Defender of Bastion, the last stronghold before the Lost Citadel. But in finding him, Bram has unwittingly given an evil mage -- once Guerrand's friend, now his archenemy -- the key to destroy the three orders of sorcery.
The Medusa Plague is the second in the Defenders of Magic Trilogy, a series by
Dragonlance saga author Mary Kirchoff that will explore for the first time many of the secrets of sorcery in the world of Krynn.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting concept.........2003-04-02
"The Medusa Plague" is probably one of the most interesting Dragonlance books that is out there. Not simply because of the storyline, but for the characters as well. When I started this series, I had no idea whom the villians would progress to be. So, needless to say, in this book the actions of certain characters were a little suprising.
Guarrand comes back to his hometown after finding out from his younger nephew that a mysterious plauge is decimating the village. Everyone who contracts this plauge gets the luxury of having their arms and legs turned into writhing snakes. They suffer for three days until finally turning to stone. (See the connection to Medusa?).
Anyway, this book is good. I didn't like the series at first. But, with the addition of this book, it gets a little better. I can say by the end of this book I was enjoying this series much more than before. It is worth checking out. This book is probably the best out of the trilogy.

The madusa plage.......1999-11-30
To me,the madusa plage is a good book for the time it was put out. Readers all over the world that have followed Dragonlance over the years should agree. I think if you have read alot of the later vol.s released (ie. Soulforge, Dragons of summer flame, the bridges of time series, or the fifth age series), you might not enjoy this one as much.Don't be afraid to try the madusa plage, but just keep in mind, it was released awhile ago.
It's one of the best books I have ever read........1999-09-22
I thought it was going to be a boring book like some of the other Dragonlance but it was kick butt awesome.
Not as good as the first, but still worth reading.......1999-06-08
OK, I admit, it's been awhile since I read it, but I remember fairly well my impression. I liked the character developments and some of the plot ideas, but it felt slow and dragging... it needed a good, overblown climax. Still worth reading after the first. (WARNING: Stop there! Make up what happens after this novel; the next one is incredibly disappointing!)

Book Description
This is the landmark book that changed the way exceptional families think about their heritage, their wealth, and their legacy to future generations - now revised and expanded. "A masterpiece. No one is more astute than Jay Hughes about the topics of family wealth and family life." - Charles W. Collier, Senior Philanthropic Adviser, Harvard Univesity.
Customer Reviews:
Great Treatment of Family Wealth Topics.......2007-09-28
I really enjoyed this book. It's a great treatment of key issues facing families transitioning significant wealth across generations.
This is not a tedious discussion of dry, technical strategies requiring an LLM in taxation to understand. Rather, it is an analysis of ways to maximize the long-term positive impacts of wealth on a family while minimizing the negative ones.
While this book would be a helpful read for anyone concerned about leaving heirs more than just money, I think families with estates over $5MM would find some of the advice most directly applicable to the challenges they face.
Family Wealth - Keeping it in the Family.......2007-02-16
As an advisor, preparing for my first Family Meeting, I found this more helpful than most other books on Family Governance. I really liked the way in which it talks about not just financial capital, and social capital, but human & intellectual capital as well. It resonated well with me and with my Family Office clients. It gives more of a structure for developing the governance model than other books I've seen.
Immensely valuable for members of a family business.......2007-01-03
Chapter 1 applied most directly to my situation, and this chapter alone makes the book worth having on my shelf. Hughes' perspective, from both his own family and his experience advising other families, gives the book authority.
Often family wealth seems to be treated as a "dirty little secret" where money concerns trump people concerns. Hughes provides a framework where financial, human, and intellectual assets can all be considered. He shows that family wealth can be a path towards growth of individuals, families, and their wealth, through investments, philanthropy, and professional development.
Bravo!
Hands on, long term familiy peace.......2006-08-19
I profound and comprehensive book on long term principles and practices to preserve family wealth (human an financial).
A must reading for medium family businesses.
Addresses issues of significant importance in the wealth management process.......2006-08-18
As principal of a financial planning and wealth management firm, I highly recommend this book for families who have acquired wealth and want their children and future generations to be concerned about their human, intellectual and social development in addition to the growth of their financial resources.
Family Wealth does a good job of addressing issues of importance to wealthy families such as the need to create and establish mission statements, plan for family governance and how to create a mutually rewarding relationship with trustees and financial advisors.
As someone with practical experience in planning and/or supervising all aspects of a client's financial planning needs with the goal of protecting and enhancing retirement assets and estates, I especially like the emphasis by Hughes on the need for long-term thinking and how personal and intellectual development is just as important as financial decisions in the family organization.
This book has added a new dimension to our multi-disciplined practice. Along with our principal specialty, retirement income and retirement plan distribution strategies, we now help our clients think of ways to use their financial capital to nurture and enhance their human and intellectual capital.
