Tierney - Solid and dependable.......2005-07-20
I always enjoy looking at Tom Tierney's interpretation of costumes of different eras. He gets all the lines right, finding the elements of a time period and rendering the dolls and costumes in brilliant colors. I frequently use his books for reference when making doll costumes.
Wonderful Pictures...great costumes!.......2000-07-30
If you love the style of the renaissance, costuming and paper dolls this is a wonderful book to own! Great period clothing throughout!

A Good End to a Great Series.......2005-06-19
This is the eighth and final volume in the "Chobits" series. All the questions about Chi are finally answered, and you get to see how everyone ends up.
I liked the end. A lot of people say that it was disappointing, but I didn't think so. I thought it was very appropriate. There are no huge surprises, but there are a couple of interesting things about some of Chi's special features. Overall, it was very sweet.
The art is is as good as ever. Great looking characters and detailed environments. If you can find it, get the edition without the red Tokyopop symbol on the spine, because it has gorgeous color pictures in the front. You may also want to get the special edition version with the book case and Chi figurine. This is hard to find as well, but Amazon or E-Bay should have it.
If you've been reading "Chobits", don't miss the last volume. This is a great ending to the series.
Chobits..........2005-05-06
Okay, I'm really 18-years-old, but I don't want to make a new account, OKAY!? Okay, now for my rewiewing:
Story:The story is very "kawaii".(Cute.)It's diffrent from your average manga, you know. And the way that it can be a comedy, a drama, a romance AND a science fiction all at the same time is AMAZING! The story gets a 10/10.
Artwork:Well, dont be fooled by the cuteness of the covers of all 8 mangas. but, the artwork is still GREAT. Although, all the nakedness sets it just a little lower. But, it's still very baeutiful! Artwork gets a 8/10
Characters:The characters are what make this manga brilliant. Hideki is JUST so damm funny! i LOVE HIM! Chi is the cutest thing I've ever seen! Every HUMAIN and PERSOCOM is beautiful! But theres one downfall:Making a 12-year-old pervert a pro at persocoms is very DUMB. Characters get a 9/10
Well, that's all I got! Chobits is a great manga, and I recommend it to EVERYONE! Even though it states OT-Older Teen-Age 16+ on the back, I don't think it's that much to fuss about. I mean, little kids see naked paintings/sculpters in the museum and dictionaries, and problay hear their parents and older siblings swear alot, so it's not THAT bad! Anywho, I recommend YOU (Yes, YOU!) Chobits! Add it to your cart...TODAY!
The 5th book:EVEN BETTER!.......2005-04-20
If you're into anything CLAMP, or Sci-Fi, then I strongly recommend this book! But, read the first 4 book before this one, okay?
If you watched "Carrie" (The movie) when you were little, then you could totally buy this! Even if your 10 (I'm almost 11, BTW)

Book Description
Baxter Black, the world’s bestselling cowboy poet, author of
Cactus Tracks & Cowboy Philosophy, and public radio’s favorite former large animal veterinarian, is back in the saddle with a hilarious new roundup of essays, commentaries, and campfire verse that speaks to the cowboy soul in each of us.
Drawn in part from Baxter’s wildly popular NPR commentaries and syndicated columns,
Horseshoes, Cowsocks & Duckfeet offers a generous helping of his tender yet irreverent, sage-as-sagebrush take on everything from ranching, roping, Wrangler jeans, and rodeos to weddings and romance, the love of a good dog, dancing, parenting, cooking up trouble, and talking about the weather. If you haven’t ridden with Baxter before, find out what more than a million dedicated fans are laughing about inside and outside the corral.

Baxter Black review.......2007-07-12
I personnally have not read this book. It was a gift to my son in-law. However, he LOVES it.
Never heard of Black before this book........2003-09-25
I had no idea he was on NPR. When my neighbor loaned me Horseshoes, Cowsocks and Duckfeet I was a long time getting around to picking it up. When I did it was only because I knew I needed to be able to tell the neighbor I had done so (out of courtesy).
I'm glad I did read it. Black probably isn't for everyone. There's a body of experience required to understand the point of his anecdotes and laugh at his humor. If you are person who's been around farm animals and live in a rural environment you'll probably love this book. I did.
On the other hand, if you an urbanite and have never been anything else you'll most likely consider it a waste.
The humor is dry and the anecdotes have an 'insider' quality probably unintended by the writer. The cultural abyss between urbanites and rurals grows ever wider. If this book doesn't span the gap there are still enough people with rural experience to appreciate and enjoy it.
Great Cowboy Stories.......2003-09-07
I have heard Baxter Black on the radio for years and I finally bought one of his books(I plan to buy more). Well, it was worth every one of the 60 miles I had to travel to purchase it. His stories or poems are truly laugh out loud. I liked the story about the cowboy trying to do his laundry and getting in an accident and his truck caught fire and a box of ammo was in the truck. He writes about everyday happenings that happen to plain ordinary folk. Everyone hears stories such as these, but Bax's writing style make the stories highly readable. I felt as I was reading them that he was there tell the tales. I highly recommend the book.
Not What I Thought.......2003-02-07
I have heard Baxter Black on a several occations on NPR (National Public Radio just in case you don't know. Check them out...) over the last couple of years. Most of what I did hear I liked so when I found this book I thought it would be great.
This is a collection of short, and I mean less than 2 pages short, stories as told by Black on NPR during 2001. (I think that's right...) Admittedly, something is lost in the translation from radio to book form. Baxter has a way with words and the way he says them is as meaningful a part as what he says. I was glad most stories had a brief introduction and for the glossery at the back of the book for those "non-cowboy" types like myself. I also liked the fact that I could read a story or two, put the book down and be able to come back to it a few minutes later or a week later.
I read all 75 (ish?) stories; I found my dad in one story (you know which one, Dad!), really enjoyed about 10, liked probably 40 or so and missed the point, didn't "get" or just didn't like the rest.
Perhaps it is the differences in age and sex (me being a 30-something married woman) or the generational differences or just the lifestyle differences but in some of the tales I had a hard time relating. I did, however, send the book on to my father who is older and wiser and much more learned in the ways of veterinarians, cowboys and politics and I bet he gets much more out of the book than I.
If you are already familar with Baxter's other stuff and like it then I believe you will not find any fault with this newest book. If this is your first Baxter Black book as it was mine then I suggest one of his more favored volumes to see if you like it first.

Well Written As Usual & Also Commercial.......2001-05-06
If you want to read a screenplay written by someone who really knows how to write one, Woody Allen is your writer. I've read many of his and they are all superb. The huge difference with this one is that this is his most commercially successful film. Thus, you are reading both a high level of creative screenwriting talent coupled with commercial audience know-how. This is a very unusual combination in show business. His other published screenplays are every bit as good as this one but they have never found as large an audience when made into film. I've read screenplays by other writers too and one huge difference in Allen's is that he records everything in it. If a character stammers, you get every nuance of the stammer. Allen leaves absolutely nothing out. If you've never read a screenplay but only read novels instead, I'm not sure how you'll like the experience. I love film so reading the screenplay is another way of experiencing something I already love in another creative format. I've read that most of the major literary awards have been criticized for not including screenplays in their categories. It is usually Allen's work that they want included in the prizes. Allen usually is nominated for an Oscar for his writing by his peers though even if he is shut out of every other category by the many who turned against him in the USA because of his personal life. Finally, if you decide that you may want to try writing a screenplay, you must start reading them. Any screenplay by Woody Allen is an excellent place to start.

Book Description
Lillian Lil Hardin was a pioneer for women in jazz. After studying at Fisk University, the Chicago College of Music, and the New York College of Music, Lil joined Sugar Johnny's Creole Orchestra and then moved on to Freddie Keppard's Original Creole Orchestra. In the 1920's Lil began playing in King Oliver's world-famous Creole Jazz Band, becoming the first female jazz musician of renown. She was well-established in Chicago as a pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader before she met and married Louis Armstrong in 1924. She was the only member of Armstrong's group that could read music. Based on extensive research, Dickerson's stunning biography is the first to examine this musical iconoclast's life and career.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Woman.......2003-09-04
Lil Armstrong has got to be the most amazing woman in American music history.
From reading this book, I learned things about jazz history that I did not know. I never realized how dependent Louis Armstrong was on his wife for his success. Not only did she write his early songs, she shaped him into the world-class performer that he became in later years.
I was also surprised to learn how sleazy the music busness was in those days. The author does an excellent job of documenting the birth of jazz in an atmosphere of crime and racial intolerance. Lil was victimized her entire life. Especially despicable is a certain man who took advantage of her good nature and her artistic talent. What he did to Lil is awful.
If you are not moved by this story, you are not human.
Great book....so when is the movie coming out?
Lil would have hated this flawed effort........2003-05-05
This ranks among the most shallow, factually incorrect jazz biographies I have read. As someone who knew Lil Armsrong well, I was struck by how far off the mark this alleged portrait of her is. The author hasn't a clue when it comes to Lil's personality, the fabric of her life, and her place in jazz. Lil deserves better than this hack job, which I gave one star because none is not an option.
a missed opportunity.......2002-12-27
As a lifelong jazz researcher, I was indeed thrilled when I discovered the first attempt at a Lil Hardin-Armstrong bio, but I must say that this one was a disappointment. Resources for jazz research are richer than they have ever been and jazz history books are finally starting to rise to the level of quality scholarship. but that is not evident here. The author seems to have assembled much of the previously published information on Lil, drawn some odd conclusions (exposing a lack of knowledge of early jazz music) and left it at that. Lil was a significant presence in the 1920's Chicago scene and in the life of her second husband, Louis; she was a fine composer and an above-average instrumentalist. She most certainly did not, as the author suggests, write out Louis' magnificent introduction to West End Blues!
There is also a strange, and somewhat unfair characterization of Louis Armstrong in this book. While much is made of Louis' infidelities, little or nothing is mentioned of Lil's (which have been documented elsewhere). Such inconsistencies damage the credibility of the book.
I love Lil Armstrong's music, and I wish that there was a better biography of her out there. She certainly deserves better!
Dickerson's JUST FOR A THRILL.......2002-04-18
James L. Dickerson focuses upon Lillian 'Lil' Hardin as a
highly educated, multi-talented, and prestigious individual from
stardom in the early part of the Twentieth Century--when it was
not "cool" to be both a black female and a vocalist/instrumental-
ist--to her last recording. The biographer depicts Lil as one who
was willing to neglect opportunities that would foster her own
additional success in order to promote her husband, Louis Arm-
strong in his musical endeavors as a soloist and instrumentalist.
The conflicts in management, the shifts from city to city, and
the rocky marriage, which eventually involved "the other woman,"
took a toll on the relationship between Lil and Louis. However,
as Dickerson vividly emphasizes, Lil never lost her love for her
musical soulmate, with whom she nurtured their only child--jazz.
Lil Hardin's impressive musical career.......2002-04-12
Just For A Thrill: Lil Hardin Armstrong, First Lady Of Jazz by James L. Dickerson is the energetic, informative and compelling biography of Lillian "Lil" Hardin (1898-1971), one of the most sought-after female jazz pianists in Chicago in her day and the wife of Louis Armstrong until their divorce in 1938. Lil Hardin's impressive musical career, trailblazing achievements and exciting love of music are all recorded in this first-class biography. Just For A Thrill is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended contribution to the growing library of biographies and memoirs of the men and women who significantly contributed to the development of jazz -- America's unique contribution to the world of music.
Customer Reviews:
Throwing out the garbage........2006-12-31
Some reviewers have been disappointed with this book, but I must say that all you need is this book, a little time, some open space, and a tomahawk. While I prefer Coldsteel's Norse hawk, and Bad Axe, I have found that the lessons learned in this book, have given me the ability to throw a tomahawk in remarkably little time.
In the past, many people have advised me on some truly terrible advice. But, this book has helped me actually throw a tomahawk, and it is filled with interesting adecdotes too. It is everything that I could want from a book on the subject, but I must admit I would be interested in a DVD on the subject as well. If digital photography and video were around when this book was first written, that product would be an exceptional find. But, it is a book that I am reviewing, and I must say that it is well worth the money, and well worth the time it takes to read it.
Disappointed.......2005-07-07
I just got the book a week ago and this book is old and outdated, it is not hard to tell. There are very few pictures, and a distorted sense of organization. Half of the pictures were drawings of irrelevant knives. I thought I would get detailed information about throwing, but most of the book is dedicated to famous knife throwers, and not to helping you learn. It is short and overpriced. A real let-down. I would get a more up-to-date book on the subject.
Great for Beginers or anyone else.......2001-11-19
This book is VERY interesting, it contains useful information about the throwing knife and the tomahawk (like the proper way to throw). it also contains great storys about spesific knife-throwing exprts and their extreme throws (like the longest known throw which is AMAZING), this is the kind of books that you start reading and cant stop, and after that youll find yourself reading through it agian and again (the storys told here are great for making people look at you funny and ask "how the hell do you know all this cool stuff?!?"). and with all that you will finaly understand how to throw the knife and make it stick! before i had the book i couldnt do it, but know i stick the knife more than miss it (btw the book also has info about making your own target board in your backyard)
Knife and Tomahawk Throwing: The Art of the Experts.......2000-12-01
An excellent treatise on the art of throwing things. I've been trying to throw knives for years now, unsuccessfully. After reading Harry McEvoy's first book "Knife Throwing: A Practical Guide" I had to read the follow-up. Terrific, alone or together, these books are a must read for anyone interested in throwing knives, or any weapon. The stories told by the author are fascinating as well as historical. Connect with knife throwers of the past and present, read these books.
Knife and Tomahawk throwing: The Art of the experts........2000-05-30
I purchased this book from Amazon.com in May of 2000 and found it to be excellent. I have always wanted to know how to throw knives and after reading for just one hour, I took several kitchen knives and was sticking them in the backyard tree, eight out of ten times. I am ordering several professional throwing knives and recommend this book to anyone interested in the art of throwing knives or tomahawks. Towards the end of the book, the author shares a numbers of very interesting stories about professional knife throwers and those who hunt with throwing knives.

Black Belt Memory Yogger .......2007-03-09
The Black Belt Memory Yogger is a handy pocket guide for people involved with six sigma processes. I like the why use it and what does it do questions. Good quick review of basic statistics and tools.
Handy and Useful, but pricey.......2003-02-21
This book is a concise reference for use by practitioners and those on the shop floor. I use it daily in our one square mile manufacturing complex.
Our people understand the tools with help of the illustrations. The how to use the tools is clear. Sure some may be overwhelmed by the statistical detail; however, the graphs are useful in showing folks what we as a team are working towards.
At only 265 pages, this spiral book is pricey, but that's expected from the millionaires of the Six Sigma Academy. ASQ's entries into this segment pale in comparison. Overall, I use it in any public course offering I teach. Keep it simple!
