Book Description

There are thousands of typefaces and more being produced monthly. It is a continual challenge for designers to select the exact typeface best suited for a project. In collaboration with the School of St. Martin, Art Center Pasadena, Rhode Island School of Design, Basel, and Yale Design School, 30 Essential Typefaces for a Lifetime defines 30 of the most useful and classic typefaces for all design needs and occasions. Neville Brody imagined "it takes 10 years for someone to master a typeface." This book contains "typefaces for a lifetime."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE.......2007-01-04

a excellent resourse book thats easy to follow and point you in the right directions regarding type. it also has a unique way of pointing where the typeface is best used for. eg helvetica is good to use for display boards becaus of its x-height.etc.

4 out of 5 stars Its all about personal opinion.......2006-11-11

When it comes to type faces, sometimes its all about personal opinions and taste. But this book covers the basics and talks about many of the type faces that i use often. It covers some typography history and explains why the typeface was origanlly created, and what the typeface is typically used for. Deffinately an interesting read if you're into typography, but if you're not and just want a type specimen book, then this book isnt for you. I'd have to say the essay "a day w/ out helvetica" was the best part of the book.

      Book Description

Anh Duong is an internationally known model immediately recognized for her regal, exotic looks. French born, she moved to New York in 1989 to pursue painting and acting but quickly became extraordinarily successful as a model, featured in high-profile campaigns for designers such as Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and John Galliano. After working as a model for more than a decade, painting is once again in the forefront of Duong's life. She has exhibited in galleries around the world; a recent showing in Paris created a sensation, selling out within weeks. In the spirit of Egon Schiele, her paintings are daring, erotic and intimate. This book juxtaposes slick fashion shots with Duong's own perception of herself. Her revealing and deeply personal paintings contrast the cool, stunning photographs taken by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Steven Meisel, Peter Lindberg and Michel Comte among other. With elegant images, as well as fun quotes from Diane Von Furstenberg, Isabella Rossellini and Bob Colacello among others, (Self) Portraits is a hypnotic exploration of art and fashion.

        Book Description

Powers features one of the most awarded and acclaimed teams of the last several years and winners of the 2001 Eisner award for best new series. Detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim work out of the special homicide office in charge of cases that involve Powers, those that have talents and abilities far beyond those of normal men. This graphic novel details one of the most disturbing cases of their careers. A group of college kids who role play their favorite super-heroes are being murdered one-by-one, and unless Walker and Pilgrim can stop the killer, more kids will die.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A group of youths indulge in a role playing game that involves running around in costumes, which is illegal under the law. This adds to the spice in this costumed version of 'Killer'. When they unfortunately run into a real power on their escapades things go terribly, terribly wrong. A much more low level case for the detectives.

        5 out of 5 stars Powers-less.......2006-10-10

In the second story arc of Brian Michael Bendis' wonderful Powers, we find out a little more about the world of Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim when they are brought in on a powers-related murder case where the victims were all power posers.
Roleplay is about the murder of a few college students who enjoy roleplaying as superheroes such as the recently-deceased Retro Girl and Diamond, the former alter ego of Walker. However, we quickly learn that it is illegal for someone without powers to wear costumes or impersonate existing heroes. Although the reasons for this law are never explicitly stated, it is a fair bet that (1) doing so puts "normal" humans at risk due to high levels of supervillains, and (2) we begin to get clues that powers-humans relations aren't that good (a sign in the lobby of an apartment complex states that the landlord doesn't rent to powers).
As Walker and Pilgrim try to find the supervillain responsible for the kids' deaths, the pair have to deal with ex-villain collaborators and the city's underworld, which only complicates things in our modern age of litigation.
Overall, Roleplay wasn't as strong a story as Who Killed Retro Girl, but it was still interesting and whoed us a more "everyday" case that Walker and Pilgrim deal with. Not every case is going to be high profile or very personal, and it was fun to see the pair dealing with something a little more mundane. The writing and art are showing subtle improvements, and I imagine that things will continue to get better for Powers.

        3 out of 5 stars Developing nicely........2006-02-07

Brian Michael Bendis, Powers: Roleplay (Image, 2001)

Bendis continues his series with this second collection. The story: our intrepid detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, are sent to investigate the almost-simultaneous deaths of a number of college students. The catch: the college students, who don't have powers, are roleplaying superheroes. (In this world, wearing a superhero costume, if you're not a power, is illegal.)

Like Who Killed Retro Girl?, Roleplay stands as its own book, though you'll get more of what's going on between Christian and Deena if you've read the first book. Either way, though, Powers is a series worth checking out. The writing is good-- the best I've ever seen from Bendis-- and the artwork is right up the alley of traditional superhero comics, but with enough modern differences to keep things interesting.

Get to know Powers; you won't regret it. ***

4 out of 5 stars Hero Worship at a deadly level........2004-03-12

Bendis and Oeming's series has always been more than a cop drama in the world of superheroes. In this story arc, they possibly bite the hand that feeds them - they discuss "fanboys" who dress and act like the heroes they idolize, who are being killed off. In the original Image comics, Bendis shows open contempt for "regular" comic book fans; his letter columns (not reprinted in this volume) contain nasty and scatological replies to gushing fans who idolize his work. Here, he openly gives his William Shatner response to fans - "Get a life!" - within the story. He and Oeming are seeking to make "Powers" something more than a standard comic - and while going beyond standard comic book fandom is a necessary step towards that goal, this particular story may seem like unnecessary roughness to many.

        5 out of 5 stars POWERS: A++++++++.......2003-03-22

Powers is a very special comic that has occomplished the impossible. It's original, humourous, entertaining, and every other word that has a hint of positive meaning. BUY THIS ITEM!!! (hey, it's written by Bendis so there isn't much or a risk :)

        5 out of 5 stars Ah...the memories!.......2003-06-22

I'm a native of South Carolina who lives in North Carolina presently, and I've traveled all over the southeastern United States studying the history and culture. For years as I was growing up I tried hard to lose my southern accent. These days I am just so pleased and proud of my southern accent and heritage. This book brought back so many words and phrases I had long forgotten that I heard so frequently when I was growing up. The author presents "southern talk" with a sense of humor, but does not mock or put down those who speak it. In fact, the reader can tell that he has much respect for the folks whose speech patterns and colorful vocabularies inspired him to write this book. He's right--- Because of television, etc., we are all sounding more and more alike. It's sad to think that someday we could no longer have areas with distinct ways of speaking. The U.S. will be much more bland if we lose the phrases and accents that add spice to our lives. It's sad that the younger people on Ocracoke Island have lost their brogue. We should treasure Louisiana Cajun French/English, the Gullah of the Georgia and South Carolina sea islands, the Texas drawl, the Appalachian Mountain twang and all of the different ways people speak. It's beautiful!!!! I am grateful to Ray Cunningham for his efforts to preserve the colorful speech of the South.

          Book Description

This introduction to the theories and analytical approaches of contemporary Western art music focuses primarily on pitch, but also treats rhythm and meter, texture, and form. Analyses of three songs exemplifying distinct modes of pitch organization (functional tonality, atonality, and neotonality) engage students, helping them understand the implications of what they have learned. Williams covers the fundamentals of set theory, and then expands on these fundamentals in chapters on diatonicism, symmetrical sets, neotonality, free atonality, and serialism. The author also explores more recent compositional techniques, such as chance and indeterminacy, minimalism, and eclecticism.

3 out of 5 stars How boring can we make Music Theory?.......2001-12-07

"Dry and testing" is a perfectly accurate description. Maybe it is becuase I have a bias against most twentieth century music, but I really have a distaste for this book. I must say, the exercises are good. They helped me understand the material much more quickly than simply reading about it or listening to the author ramble on - he's dry and testing too. I suppose this book is decent enough for a class - given that the teacher is creative and uses other sources as well. I wouldn't want to keep it around afterwards as a reference.

          4 out of 5 stars General comments.......2000-07-08

This is a workbook generally covering all major twentieth century developments in composition. However, it heavily concentrates on rigid objective theories which analyse 20th century music, and as a result can tend to be a little dry and testing for the reader at times. The author also tends to overcomplicate simple concepts ocassionally. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see how music theorists have attempted to grapple with highly complex areas such as twelve-tone theory and neotonal harmony.

This is an outstanding guide that will be useful for new cigar lovers as well as veteran smokers. It does need an update, and I would recommend a section devoted to small cigars and cigarillos, which are becoming more popular.

As a newcomer to the world of fine handmade cigars, I found in Shanken's Cigar Handbook a very comprehensive and cozy text. All the answers to the questions of fresh cigar aficionados are in there. Lots of great colorful pictures and cigar brand data too. Make this your reference book! Bill Cosby's merciless foreword is magnificent.

Another reviewer who it seems was an IBD subscriber confirms this in his review "During the bear market I was still reading IBD and I never once read anywhere where he suggested, recommended or alluded to any of the short trades he mentions in the book."

Anybody can draw lines on historical charts and look good as its a lot clearer when things have played out.

            5 out of 5 stars Great techniques!.......2007-05-30

I've always like William O'Neal's books and strategies, this book help with looking for a downtrend in the markets and helped me understand more of the charts by showing good examples.

4 out of 5 stars The anatomy of the short sale-.......2007-05-14

Bill O'Neal has done a great deal in this brief book (It was originally a pamplet)esplaining the correct time ot sell stocks short. Contrary to popular opinion you should not attempt to sell short at a stocks 52 week high. You first wait for the initial pull back and for the stock to fail on 3 attempted rallies, you should short on the 3rd failed rally, this is the point of proven weakness. O'Neal suggests shorting previous market leaders when they have fallen out of favor. He backs up his teachings with over 120 real historical bar charts showing volume and showing when to short on each one. You can double your chances as a trader by trading both sides of the market. I highly recommend this book to all traders along with all of O'Neal's other books and Investor's Business Daily. I am very glad Mr. O'Neal decided to share his research and experience with the general public.

            5 out of 5 stars Short Selling.......2007-05-06

There are not many books available on selling short, and O'Neil's description of how market tops develope alone is worth the price; however, you get more than this with clear, precise information as to the proper timing and risk of selling short. As in all market books, the only ones worth reading are those that emphasize the importance of patience to success, and O'Neil points this out over and over and over.
