Book Description
Serious fashionistas will simply devour Visionaries, Susannah Frankel's collection of in-depth interviews with 23 of the world's top couturiers-and the only book of its kind. From Azzedine Alaïa to Zandra Rhodes, Ghost to Jean-Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood to Junya Watanabe, plus, of course, the names behind such universally recognized monograms as CdG, D&G, and YSL, each ultra-chic subject openly deconstructs his or her own designs. Originally written at pivotal moments in their careers, the profiles offer exclusive insights into not only the mind of the creator in question, but also the cultural climate at the time. Archival runway pictures, portraits, and glamorous new shots by some of the hottest photographers in the industry illustrate this sharp, smart volume.
Customer Reviews:
Smart, sharp coffee table book.......2003-03-09
The interviews in the book were originally published in the Independent, the Guardian and Dazed & Confused. They cover a wide range of modern designers and is well-illustrated by the crisply chosen photographs.
Particularly nice moments are the interview with Helmut Lang, Vivienne Westwood'sphotographic portrait, and the interview with Paul Smith.
Nice to have.
personal talk.......2001-12-07
Claire Wilcox has put together an amazing collection of interviews with the world's top designers. From the up and coming Alexander McQueen to the legends such as Yes Saint Laurent and Vivianne Westwood. Every major designer you can think of is interviewed in this book. Along with the text their are fine pictorial displays of the artists (designers) and images of their work. It is a must for anyone that is involved with the fashion world.

Book Description
"Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy . . .
how can I ever forget them. . . ."
--CHARLES SCHULZ
How could any of us ever forget them? For fifty years, Charles Schulz and the whole Peanuts gang have delighted millions of readers around the world. Now, in celebration of the artist who quickly became a national treasure, this special anniversary volume brings together for the first time in book form, the last year of the Peanuts comic strip. With Peanuts 2000, there's no need to say goodbye to old friends.
Customer Reviews:
Still love Peanuts.......2007-01-12
I find that after all this time I still love the Peanuts gang. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy and others still bring a smile to my face as the wonderful insight of the creator comes through. I wish that I was young again and still had the old paperbacks that I once read so I could go back to some and re-read them. I wish that Shultz could still create those drawings and tears just swelled up from inside reading the ending passage. Charles Shultz will be missed by me and I have read this and other books by him to my kids so they might gain an interest in these type of books. I wish they had more specials of the Peanuts ang for TV rather than some of the stuff on now. Anyone who wants great cartoons with very funny happenings for their children will definitely love this book and others by Shultz.
Schroeder Rocks the House.......2006-12-14
Peanuts are totally classic! Dude! Schroeder is like the coolest person on the face of the earth! He is so reserved and that make Peanuts worth the while to read. He also looks so cute at his little piano, playing Bethoven. This book clearly shows that and becuase I love little Schroeder, I love this book too! Beethoven forever! Rock on! (JK)
Great Book.......2006-08-17
This book is a great buy! It has the classic lovable Peanuts strips we've all enjoyed. I love the format and size of the book and will purchase more in this series.
Peanuts: A True Staple in American Culture.......2006-01-02
Peanuts has truly left its mark on the world. I can't honestly say I know anyone who has never heard of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus and Lucy. We all know and love them. Who can ever forget Snoopy imagining himself as a World War I Flying Ace on the top of his doghouse? Or Charlie Brown's consistent, diligent, but always failing efforts to finally lead his baseball team to a win?
This final collection of Peanuts strips cannot quite live up to Schulz's genius from years past, but they are still very charming and fun to read. I'd like to see you try to come up with a funny idea every day for fifty years. In this collection, Schulz draws more self suffecient strips, than strories carrying accross the dailies, probably because it was easier on him at his old age.
Peanuts is a very rare commodity. It is certainly not gorgeously drawn, but the writing and lovable characters make up for it's visual spareness. Plus, although the drawings were somewhat crude, the were outragously funny, and the whole point of a comic strip is to make you laugh, so there you are.
Charles Schulz is a true comic genius. His later work (i.e. this collection) is not his best, but he was still able to draw a funny comic strip every day. In the words of Bill Watterson, the brilliant man behind the wonderful "Calvin and Hobbes"-"I've never met Charles Schulz, but long ago his work introduced me to what a comic strip could be, and made me want to be a cartoonist myself. He was a hero to me as a kid, and his influence on my work and life is long and deep. I suspect most cartoonists would say something similar. Schulz has given all his readers a great gift, and my gratitude for that tempers my disappointment at the strip's cessation. May there someday be a writer/artist/philosopher/humorist who can fill even a part of the void "Peanuts" leaves behind."
"How can I ever forget them?".......2004-03-01
These were the final words in Peanuts comics delivered by the late Charles Schulz. To answer the question, you can never forget Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and Snoopy.
I remember the last "new" comic strip came out 13 February, the day after he died. Thanks, Sparky, for all the memories and the inspiration (I work on my own cartoon strip).
These cartoons were originally published early 1999 through February, 2000 in the newspapers. Charlie Brown has a date for a dance (something that rarely happened). Rerun holds the football for Charlie Brown (he got more and more parts in the cartoon strip in the final years). Charlie Brown pays tribute to the ever scowling Joe Torre! Cartoonist Day is remembered (5 May). Snoopy writes more novels and plays golf with the musical notes from Schroder's piano. "Wolves are making a comeback," as Sally philosophises. There's also a tribute to painter Andrew Wyeth and Valley Forge, as acted out by Snoopy. Snoopy Claws can be seen downtown around Christmas.
Also, Charlie Brown hits a grand slam, Linus kicks the habit once and for all and gives his blanket to Snoopy, Peppermint Patty gets straight A's, the Great Pumpkin comes as promised and Schroeder finally admits he's got a crush on Lucy! Don't hold your breath on the last 5, folks! I was just seeing if you were paying attention!
However, this book is poignant since these were the final strips of Peanuts. Charles Schulz must have known the days of the Peanuts cartoon were numbered when he let Rerun hold the football! If you're a Peanuts fan, you'll enjoy this book!

Customer Reviews:
Easily Readable and a Good Laugh.......2006-09-13
The Mid-Packer's Lament is a collection of the author's personal running stories told in his words with his special wit and humor. The book is easily readable and can be picked up anytime, as each of the stories are only 2-3 pages. Much of the time I couldn't contain myself and began laughing out load. As runner's we all have our running stories and I found myself often putting myself in his shoes and enjoying the stories.
A Laugh A Mile.......2006-09-02
Let me just say, there were a few times I had to put the book down laughing. As a self-proclaimed mid-packer who took up running for weight-loss, now training for a first marathon, I was taken by how much of Chris' content I found myself relating to, outside of just the running! His spot-on representation of that moment a runner realizes a difference in how they feel vs. how they look - Hilarious. I laughed myself red-faced (which is not as easy to do as it was 40lbs ago, heavier). Great read. Great Job, Chris. A perfect bedtime page-turner.
Easy read, fun if a bit inconsistent.......2006-08-30
This is a collection of short stories from Chris Russell....a sort of best-of previsouly (mostly?) published columns from a true mid-pack runner with a cool house and a cool dog. At worst the stories are a little bit dull but they're short so skip to the next one at best Russell's humor reminds one of Mark Twain. One of the books on sports that actually smack of intelligence and thoughtfulness. A great vacation read or do one a night before bed.....Thanks Chris!
A fun ramble for runners and non-runners alike........2006-01-21
Chris Russell's writing is colorful, insightful, and just plain fun. This collection of his articles mixes all three strengths, and the result is an enjoyable ramble for runners and non-runners alike. There are great stories from running events - experiences which ring true with every typical runner who hopes to be more than a typical runner but knows it probably won't happen. There are reflections and views on the world around us that ring true on multiple levels. And there are sections that simply leave you laughing out loud.
If you're a runner, read The Mid-Packer's Lament for the running stories, to reinforce your somewhat crazed self-image, and for some inspiration and advice along the way. If you're not a runner - and especially if you're a runner's spouse or partner - read it as a sort of enjoyable therapy to help you understand why runners are like they are.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable and witty .......2007-02-02
This is a light, crispy diversion for fans of Lovecraft and genre cinema, that asks the compelling question: "What in the name of Yog-Sothoth is a 'real' Lovecraft film adaptation?" It is sprinkled with droll witticisms that lovers of Lovecraft will relish. For example, of the silly-sounding eldritch lines spoken by Dean Stockwell's Wilber Whateley, in "The Dunwich Horror" (1970, which faithfully try but painfully fail to bring Lovecraft's written word to soundtrack life, the authors astutely observe: "Lovecraftian incantations like ygnaiih or thflthkh'ngha ... look more blasphemous than they sound." Or, their general reference to film versions of Lovecraft works as "these flickering blasphemies." The appreciation and love of HPL's works, and the intentions (if not always the results) of cinematists who have tried to honor them in film, come through in the pages of this book, endearing the attentive reader. The authors profess this is not a comprehensive work, so I cannot fault them for anything left out. Still, if not presumptuous, I would lobby (ahem) for inclusion of a film that deserves consideration in a work such as this, in a presumptive future, enlarged edition: "The Kindred" with Kim Hunter, Rod Steiger, and a starring cast of younger, lesser-known actors. It is chockful of Lovecraftian themes, moreso than many a work explicitly claiming Lovecraft as the source. On the whole, this is a good book, with plenty of photographs and illustrations. But alas, it is over too quickly, leaving one wanting more, but mainly as a tribute to its enjoyable style and concept.
Good guide to Lovecraftian films.......2006-11-10
This is a good guide to Lovecraftian films. Of course, there are films I would have left out and films I would have included, and I don't agree with their opinion on every film. Still, it's an interesting read and covers a wide selection, including shorts and TV shows.

Wit and nostalgia nicely combined........1998-02-20
For those who have a thing for the music of the 70's, like myself, this book is a great place to lose yourself in. It is smartly laid out, with individual sections on topics and fads. You'll find yourself laughing at stories that may very well hit extremely close to home. The only complaint is the "Bonus CD" which is very short in length and not very representative of the things talked about in the book. Next time they should either do a better job with the CD or lower the price and skip the CD completely.
an incisive look at a hackneyed era.......1998-01-14
So smart! So funny! After all the tired newspaper and magazine articles on the '70s, I thought I could never be interested in another essay on disco, mega songs like "Freebird", or even soul/funk. I was wrong. Eric's writing is clever and thoughtful and looks at the reprocussions of a revival that has already happened and is with us still.

Excellent guide!.......2003-01-09
Probably the best, easy-to-read book regarding coaching and mentoring for self-taught, busy managers.
What They Forgot To Tell You When They Made You A Manager.......2001-05-24
First, let me disclose that I am a client of the author. So perhaps I should be upset with Mr. Brounstein for putting out a book that has the same information I paid him thousands of dollars to teach me. Buy the book.
Remember the first time you dealt with a difficult employee - the knot in your stomach as you called them into your office. Learn about giving constructive feedback instead of criticism, and you may just turn a problem employee into a model employee - it happened to me. The knot may not go away completely, but with this technique it will definitely be more manageable. Buy the book.
Work smarter not harder. Learn about Results-based Performance Management, and get results, not just busy employees. Teach your employees to manage themselves by holding them accountable for results, not just activities that you give them to do. Buy the book.
Learn about coaching techniques such as Tutoring With Questions that will get your employees to start answering their own questions - and getting the right answers. Buy the book.
About a year ago I suddenly found myself in charge of 100 employees that had been thrown together from different cultures as the result of mergers and corporate realignment. Through the techniques I learned from Marty that are revealed in this book, I have been able to build an effective team of managers who in turn have helped me turn the organization around. A year ago, we were missing committed deadlines one after another. Now, we consistently meet and often beat our commitments. I often refer to my copy of the book for a refresher on Marty's techniques and regularly refer my managers to the book when they run into difficult situations. Buy the book.
Just in case I forgot to mention it: Buy the book.
Coaching & Mentoring for Dummies.......2000-07-08
This would be an informational book for people who are coaching or mentoring others. There are lots of helpful tips on how to get others to work for you, not against you. These tips can be helpful when you want people to try their best.
Coaching & Mentoring for Dummies.......2000-07-07
This is a great "how to" book. It has plenty of "laundry lists" that all coaches must keep in mind at all times. It is one of the most comprehensive coaching books that I've seen for a long time. This "on my desk" book is guarranted to have plenty of high-liteing and dog-ears within a short period of time. This is a must for new or seasoned coaches and coaches-of-coaches.
