1 out of 5 stars Best Reason to Purchase a Book at Book Store.......2005-12-09

When a person purchases a book at the book store, they may thumb through the pages to judge the qualifications of the book, the authors, and whether it fits their need or not. I am slowly learning who the good authors are in the collectible field to know whether to purchase their books on-line or not. This was definitely not the case with this book nor another book I purchased by these authors. I wanted an Avon book to help me identify and describe the collectible Avon Jewelry that I have found at various estate sales, and thought this book could help. I was definitely mistaken. Anyone can state, "Christmas Tree Pin with red stones, circa 1990" as stated on page 62, instead of Avon's description of "Victorian Tree Pin" with the actual date of 1992. Or on page 39, authors wrote "Abolone (sic - spelled wrong) set includes necklace with 14-inch silver metal chain, silver bracelet trimmed with gold, and ring set in silver, circa 1990s," when there is nothing gold or silver about the set, except maybe washed in gold or silver, but definitely not true silver or gold; Avon advertised this set in their 1975 catalog, much earlier than 1990s. Then, the last straw for me is the beautiful set that Avon sold in 1971 (page 37); even though the authors got the date correct, they simply ignored the title to the set, but instead wrote, "pearl and gold set" when this set is Avon's "Evening Creation" set. Did the authors do any research? I think not. Will I ever be so stupid as to purchase another one of their books? No way! I would resale this book, but I don't want another person to be as disappointed as I was when I purchased this book on-line; not to mention that at the same time, I also purchased their waste of writing book entitled, "Sarah Coventry Jewelry."

3 out of 5 stars Avon Collectible Fashion Jewelry and Awards.......2004-02-04

Any reader inevitably judges a book through his personal tunnel vision. My own tunnel vision is costume jewelry so I was disappointed that information and illustrations on Avon realia occupied so much space to the detriment of the costume jewelry. I bought the book because I needed information on Avon jewelry which appears with increasing frequency at estate and garage sales. Although the photography was excellent as in the authors' Sarah Coventry book, I think that attempting to cover such divergent topics may have been too much of a stretch.
Even dilettante collectors such as I want as many pictures to increase their familiarity with collectible name brand jewelry--especially with manufacturers whose products are not promoted in magazines or newspapers or department stores.

With some different art, we see the Grimmer (and Cynosure) caught up in a corporate war, and even worse, the return of The Dancer, and some of Grimjack's arena history. Desperate times for a desperate men. Outstanding stuff, with a great supporting cast as usual.

Not to mention everyone's favorite watch lizard, Bob.

5 out of 5 stars MORE GRIMJACK! and MUNDEN'S BAR too!!.......2006-01-23

The trade-paperback of the original GRIMJACK comic series. This volume reprints issues fifteen through twenty-one, published in the mid-80's, this is when the book really finds it's voice and takes off. Grimjack is the original "hard-boiled Barbarian"in the deadly PAN-DIMENSIONAL city of CYNOSURE, where reality is changed like underwear, where guns work someplace, magic other places, but swords work everywhere!

In this volume Co-creator TIM TRUMAN leaves the series (only to return better-than-ever in 2005's KILLER INSTINCT, see my review)so we have stunning art by TOM SUTTON and inks, finishes by STEVE ERWIN who also does art in MUNDEN'S BAR segments which are finally included in vol.4. Traditionly the Munden's backstories were light filler/shorts, but here they are included because they are important to filling TRADE WAR plot gaps.

"THIS WHEELS on FIRE" starts the TRADE WARS storyline rolling with the return of PROF. ALTHEA MUELLER who had hermind re-intergratedwith her new body in GRIMJACK 9 (or Legend of GJ vol. 3). This is followed by WOLFPAC which delves deeper into JOHN GAUNT'S history in the ARENA, as agladiator known as THE DANCER plots and his return. GAUNT and BLACKJAC go to free the child-gladiators and end up in arena facing the children themselves. Then the Dancer's plans come to fruitation using Gaunt to set events in motion than begin the TRADE WARS. The Alpha Centauri Commercial Empire had taken over Cynosures ruling body, putting them in a position to force their competitors out of the city, once it is revealed to the other congomerates, the corporate war erupts in a very real sense. GRIMJACK and his partners are in the middle of it, all the while Dancer and his servants wait to kill Gaunt when the timeis right.

This collection contains some of the best storytelling yet in the series. All of the characters that make Grimjack such an interest series, are at their best:NOLESKi, the hick biker-cop, ROSCOE, gaunt's ex-partner, SPOOK, the lady as beautiful as she is dangerous, BLACKJAC, who fought w/ Gaunt in the ARENA, and more. We learn how Gaunt gets his scar in this collection and in the last and best story reprinted we see a badly wounded Grimjack, an easy target for his enemies and any other killer wantin' to make a rep. Sutton's new look for the series sets an amazing new direction for the series unbound by convensional comic style.

I can't wait for tne next set of reprints in volume 5, Gaunt's Death and more.

          Book Description

In 1939, at the age of fifteen, Linda Darnell left her Texas home and ordinary world to live the Hollywood dream promoted by fan magazines and studio publicity offices. She appeared in dozens of films and won international acclaim for Blood and Sand, Forever Amber, A Letter to Three Wives, and the original version of Unfaithfully Yours.

Driven by her mother to become rich and famous but unable to cope with the true nature of Hollywood, Darnell soon was caught in a downward spiral of drinking, failed marriages, and exploitive relationships. By her early twenties, she was an alcoholic, hardened by a life in which beautiful women were chattel. By the time of her death in a house fire at age forty-one, she was struggling for recognition in the industry that once had called her its "glory girl."

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Good reading.......2004-04-27

Very well, written, but the author couldn't decide the year of Linda's birth. On the copyright page, one year of birth was given, then in the book, another year. It made me question the other facts. Aside from that, the book was very interesting-- the strange homelife, the thyroid problem, the marriages, the films, the decline of her acting career and the section on her burning and death are just gripping. I recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great read on a star not mentioned enough..........2002-07-26

This was the only bio I could find on Linda Darnell and I must say, it was worth the money. The author's honest depiction and narrative of this actress is wonderfully written. I highly recommend this insightful biography!

5 out of 5 stars The Curse of Beauty.......2002-02-06

I always liked Linda Darnell. My mother had told me about her when I was in my early teens, saw some of her films, and was quite taken by her. She wasn't a great actress, but she certainly wasn't a bad one, either. But when you look like that, who cares? Linda, born Monetta Eloyse Darnell in Texas, was blessed, or cursed, with a strikingly beautiful face. Pushed by her volatile, ambitious mother, Linda was signed to a contract at 20th Century Fox at the age of 15. Touted as Fox's "Glory Girl", she was featured in several films as a decorative brunette. With her lovely "Latin" looks (her grandfather actually was part Cherokee) and voluptuous figure, she adorned the screen in films such as "The Mask of Zorro" and "Blood and Sand", playing "good girls". When her box-office appeal started to wane, she was still barely over 20 years old. Her personal problems began to mount, dealing with her overbearing mother, a mounting drinking problem that began when she was married to her first husband, (who was some twenty-odd years older), and the fact that she could not bear children. Ms. Darnell's career picked up, however, when she started playing gorgeous "bad girls" in films such as "Fallen Angel", "Hangover Square", and the overblown costume epic "Forever Amber", in which she played an upwardly mobile woman of ill repute. Her best role, as the golddigger with a tender heart in Joseph Mankiewicz's "A Letter to Three Wives", came in 1949, but from then on it was pretty much downhill. Ms. Darnell's personal life became a series of unhappy marriages, exploitative relationships, a spotty career, alcoholism, and ultimately ended in a spectacularly awful way: she was horribly burned in a house fire in 1965, with 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 90% of her body, lingered for about 33 hours, and died, aged 41.
The book is a quick, albeit depressing read. Ronald Davis, also a native Texan, writes with compassion for his subject. Several interviews with her siblings, friends, and adopted daughter give a sympathetic portrayal of the "Fallen Angel". To put it in a nutshell, Ms. Darnell wasn't tough enough to handle the ups and downs of show business. Her tale isn't the first nor the last about the cruel world of showbiz, but it just seems even more depressing, when one thinks of the beauty with the face of a Madonna, going downhill at such a young age, and dying so horribly. I may add that there are eerie foreshadowings of her demise in three of her best known films. In "Hangover Square", she is strangled by Laird Cregar, who places her body on a bonfire on Guy Fawkes Day; in "Anna and the King of Siam", Linda, playing the runaway concubine Tuptim, is burned at the stake; and in "Forever Amber", she bears witness to the Great Fire of London. Creepy, isn't it?
Just a word of warning: Don't read this book if you're depressed!

          5 out of 5 stars hollywood beauty-linda darnell.......2000-07-07

One of those books you don't want to put down- sensitively written the author follows Darnell's career and personal life-highlighting how much the beauriful Darnell was liked by her contemporaries in the movie world. A must to add to any library.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1998-12-24

Ronald L.Davis' study of the beautiful 'Fox Girl', Linda Darnell is one written with great kindness and respect to this most wonderful lady. This book does not delve into the trash and gossip that often is cruelly and unnecessarily found in film star biographies. Davis looks at Linda with a caring pen and writes about her fairly. Although he writes about her personal troubles he does so gently with heart and understanding. He spent many hours interviewing her daughter Charlotte, her sisters Undeen and Monte, her brother Cal and numerous friends. This helps to give the book a personal feel that is not found in those written from archives and second hand news. I adored Linda before reading this book and when I finished he cemented my adoration of the Lady forever.

4 out of 5 stars Useful depending on how you use it.......2007-09-25

This book accomplishes several things. First, it provides a time line of verified events from 3066 on through 3068 which does a lot do diffuse some of the confusion about what really happened during those periods. Also, while the book may not answer questions it certainly does provide ideas for campaign and game settings, and even includes a bare bones campaign for people to pay through with ideas for expanding upon it.

In all, the product is worth while so long as you know how to use it. Do not expect it to tell you everything that has happened, if anything this just makes the whole story line more confusing. Instead it should be viewed as a source of ideas for games by using the questions it generates and the limited information it does offer up.

If there is any failing with the book it is that all you learn is what the typical civilian would know. This leaves you feeling "out of the loop" if you are especially interested in the events of any one particular faction. Hopefully this will be corrected in some future books so that we can get a more detailed view of what happened inside each faction instead of just a broad overview of the whole Inner Sphere.

4 out of 5 stars Engrossing but a little tricky to follow.......2007-04-05

Continuing the Word of Blake Jihad plotline, /Hot Spots 3070/ keeps with the "collected news blurb" format of the previous /Dawn of the Jihad/ supplement. With how these blurbs are occasionally inset inside one another, span pages, and otherwise get jumbled about it can be somewhat hard to follow, but no worse than your average magazine that tries to cram information into every available space. While slightly aggrivating in that the scope of the articles tend to generate more questions than answers, this is mollified by the fact that, pretty much, this is the entire point. While a proper timeline of "this happened when" would be nice, it wouldn't be appropriate for the tone of the Jihad storyline and such a thing will probably come out when the plotline ends and it transitions into the Republic of the Sphere.

They do start hinting at Wobblie concentration camps and citizen programming, though...

Readers seeking an atypical business book may like Leadership Can Be Taught. Its author, Sharon Daloz Parks, has a conventional enough background: She's taught at various Harvard graduate schools, including its Divinity School, the Business School, and the School of Government--the book itself comes from Harvard Business School Press--and she now heads a leadership institute in Washington state, just outside Seattle. Parks' approach to leadership development, though, springs from a decidedly non-traditional philosophy.

Unlike others who lionize strong leaders and decisive, authoritative personalities, Parks looks for her leadership lessons to Ronald Heifetz, a humble, almost meek instructor at Harvard. The book opens with a transcript of Heifetz's typical class at Harvard, and illustrates his free-flowing banter with students. There's something of a biblical, storybook-like quality to this narrative, as it shows Heifetz's Socratic style in drawing out students and leading them to truths. Heifetz's approach carries over to the book, which has an indirect, oblique style, and shuns the reductionist, simplifying, bullet-point orientation of most business books.

Through the course of the book's nearly 300 pages, Parks argues that leadership is less magical and yet more important than we usually believe. Drawing on Heifetz's ideas, she explains her belief that leaders are formed gradually, over time and through deliberate effort--not born with special traits. Four key themes run through the book: first, that true leadership differs from the kind of formal authority typically conferred by organizations; second, that leaders have less of a role solving technical problems than in helping teams of individuals deal with adaptive challenges; third, that conventional power--meaning authority over people and budget--is less important than "presence"; and fourth, that this mysterious quality of "presence" rests less on innate personality than on a style of interacting with others in an organization.

Parks' concept of presence becomes a key axis on which the book turns. It's an intriguing concept. As she defines it, presence is "the ability to hold steady and to improvise in the midst of the conflict and tumult of adaptive work depends on cultivating an inner consciousness of the connectivity of which one is a part--especially when there is a high degree of voltage on the wires. It requires the ability to recognize and intelligently manage strong feelings--one's own emotions and the motions in others….It requires an understanding of one's self in relationship to audience, the ability to pay close attention, to listen, to feel, and to bring one's own heart-mind into the present…."

Not all of this book rests on such dense academic language. Much of the writing describes anecdotes of students' interactions with Heifetz, as they learn his (and Parks') concept of leadership. Still, this is a challenging work, and not one that all readers will enjoy. Those who enjoy new paradigms of leadership, such as those advanced in Resonant Leadership or The Leadership Wheel, will be best suited for the unusual ideas, and style, of this book. --Peter Han

                    Book Description

Allows readers to experience the dynamic “case-in-point” approach to teaching leadership, based on Harvard professor Ronald Heifetz’s internationally renowned leadership course This book argues that today’s complex times require a new kind of leader—one who can adapt to constant changes, learn in the moment and apply that learning to make wise business decisions. But to train this type of leader, we need a new approach to leadership teaching. Leadership Can Be Taught dynamically outlines Ronald Heifetz’s renowned “case-in-point” approach, which enables managers to learn crucial business skills from immediate experience rather than through third-hand readings.

5 out of 5 stars Leadership For The New Commons.......2007-07-26

I love some of Sharon Daloz Parks' thinking. I really think she is helping define a new way of looking at leadership in a world of flatter hierarchies and lack of deference to authority, where people expect to 'lead their own lives' increasingly, rather than take their lead from outside.

I love a phrase she coined a while back - 'Leadership for the New Commons' - building on Laurence Lessig's work on defining the new open world of free intellectual exchange and lack of hierarchy that characterises how people interact through the web in particular, but increasingly in real life, too.

The shape of things is changing so fast, I think she has argued, that people need to take responsibility for working it out themselves and reaching common agreements on the way forward - learning how to lead the definition and the way forward - rather than waiting for a leader to emerge and define the way forward for them.

In an increasingly complex and chaotic world, she seems to argue, we all need that internal compass and our own rudder controls firmly switched to 'on' at all times to navigate the complexity.

Harvard's case study methods have been criticized for being too slow. By the time they've taken a year to put together their case study of Google and prepare it as a teaching case, I heard one critical academic say recently, Google has bought YouTube and it's whole business model has moved on.

I tend to agree. And the alternative case-in-point approach Sharon Daloz Parks describes helps break from the lumbering, slow-moving case studies that other business schools ponderously work their way through.

There is a well-known quote from Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus about how anyone can be taught leadership and I've never quite believed it. I wanted to, but never quite could. With the new work of Sharon Daloz Parks and others in the field today, I am glad to say that I am being swayed to think that maybe it can happen. Phil Dourado. www.TheLeadershipHub.com

5 out of 5 stars Another GREAT TAKE on Heifetz & Adaptive Leadership.......2006-07-06

Ron Heifetz is clearly one of the seminal leadership scholars, practitioners, and teachers in the field today. This superb volume, by Sharon Daloz Parks, takes off from where his two previous books ("Leadership Without Easy Answers" and "Leadership On the Line") leave off. "Leadership Can be Taught" takes its readers through Heifetz's Harvard Business School course "PAL 101--Exercising Leadership: Mobilizing Group Resources."

For those of us who have studied Heifetz's two previous books and taken courses modeled off his HBS course (as I did at Columbia Teachers College almost a decade ago), "LCBT" provides an excellent refresher. My Columbia TC Professor (who must have TA'd for Heifetz when she was teaching at Harvard's Graduate School of Education) ran an outstanding version of his course in her own right.

Using all of Heifetz's key principles and pedagogical techniques (and a very similar curriculum), she put us through our paces in teaching leadership "adaptively." It was a watershed learning experience of invaluable practical value to me. Although my field is leadership development in secondary-school education (for both teachers and students), I borrow heavily from Heifetz's theory and work at the graduate level.

Although I doubt they were intended this way, I see these 3 works as a sort of trilogy on adaptive leadership. Heiftez's "Leadership On the Line" (co-written with Marty Linsky) is probably the most accessible of the three: clearly the place for any reader to start learning about H's powerful approach. "Leadership Without Easy Answers" is the most scholarly and thoroughly developed (with extensive historical examples, etc.).

Daloz Parks's "LCBT" concentrates on Heifetz's leadership course itself. What is the experience of taking it like for his students? How do--or don't--its lessons stick with them as they resume their professional lives?

Daloz Parks's answers to these questions are balanced, fair, accurate, and leavened with plenty of anecdotal evidence. We get glimpses of classroom interactions, and we hear Professor Heifetz speaking quite candidly about the advantages--as well as challenges--of his dynamic educational approach.

Any serious scholar or teacher of leadership MUST peruse this product of the Harvard Business School Press. One of the beauties of Heifetz's approach is that it works in virtually any area: from business, to education, to public service, etc. Its principles apply equally in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors.

In sum, I can't recommend "Leadership Can be Taught" highly enough to leaders and/or faculty in leadership-development programs of all stripes. Sharon Daloz Parks has done us all a great service in recording the impact of Heifetz's work on those fortunate enough to study with the master himself!
