    Book Description

There is a common perception in the arts today that overtly activist artæoften seen to sacrifice an aesthetic pleasure for a subversive oneæis no longer in fashion. In bringing together sixteen of the most important essays on activist and community-based art from the pages of Afterimageæone of the most influential journals in the media and visual arts fields for more than twenty-five yearsæGrant H. Kester demonstrates that activist art, far from being antithetical to the true meaning of the aesthetic, can be its most legitimate expression.

Forging a style of criticism where aesthetic, critical, theoretical, and activist concerns converge, Afterimage has shaped American debates around the politics of visual production and arts education while offering a voice to politically involved artists and scholars. Art, Activism, and Oppositionality insists not only on the continuing relevance of an activist stance to contemporary art practice and criticism, but also on the significance of an engaged art practice that is aligned with social or political activism. With essays that span fifteen yearsæroughly from Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential win to the 1994 Republican victories in Congress, a period marked by waning public support for the arts and growing antagonism toward activist art æArt, Activism, and Oppositionality confronts issues ranging from arts patronage, pedagogy, and the very definitions of art and activism to struggles involving AIDS, reproductive rights, sexuality, and racial identity.

Art, Activism, and Oppositionality will interest students and scholars of contemporary art history, media studies, cultural studies, and the fine arts, as well as, arts activists, critics, and arts administrators.

    Book Description

This is the first authorized monograph on Pierre Cardin (b. 1922). Visionary fashion designer and licensing pioneer, Cardin began his career apprenticed to Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior. He quickly launched his own haute couture line, in 1954, followed rapidly by the first women's and men's prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) collections from a couture designer. Since the 1960s, Cardin's cutting-edge, futuristic designs have continually broken new ground and established exciting new trends. And he invented the business of fashion as we know it today, with international brand licensing across a variety of products and media. Pierre Cardin himself made his ambition clear: "I wanted my name to become a brand and not just a label."

Cardin brought high fashion to the street; he invented the bubble dress and launched the use of cartridge pleating, bright clear colors, as well as vinyl, plastics, metal rings, and oversize buttons. Pierre Cardin has also designed accessories, furniture, and cosmetics. There are now more than 900 licenses in over 140 countries, employing more than 200,000 people under the Pierre Cardin trademark.

5 out of 5 stars A very beautifully produced book.......2007-01-18

A "must read" for people who are interested in today's fashion. I am a fan of Mr. Cardin. Having worked with Mr. Cardin and his amazing crew for more than 3 years as house model in Paris before going to college, it's easy for me to understand why he is always a leader in fashion. This book documents his powerful journey so wonderfully!

    Book Description

Pierre Cardin, the inventor of "prêt-à-porter" whose graphically iconic initials personify his signature style, is best known for fashion and accessory design. However, he launched a unique furniture line during the 1970s that transposed his sculptural approach to fashion into furniture design: futuristic forms combined with traditional lacquer and cabinetmaking techniques and revolutionary space-age designs featured metal and plastics.
Artistic director and catalyst, he challenged artists such as Serge Manzon, Christian Adam, Maria Pergay, Giacomo Passera, Prevost, and Pacos to renew contemporary French furniture design. Archival documents and newl commissioned photography include rare designs produced in his Paris workshops or by Japanese firm Yamada Shomei, such as his Space line that is the avant-garde symbol of this emperor of 1970s style. Cardin actively participated in this timely publication aimed at the burgeoning market for 1970s design.

I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.

Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.

                    5 out of 5 stars State-of-the-Art Laughter.......2007-02-18

I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.

The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.

5 out of 5 stars Fox Blast From The Past.......2002-04-04

I bought this book quite some time ago, and still read it every so often! Very few comics -- actually only one other (The Far Side) can make me REGULARLY laugh out loud as often as Bill Amends' Fox Trot does. How he has come up with such regularly hilarity for over a dozen years is beyond me, but here it is in black and white (and some color). Some of them are so funny, that I even laugh outloud the second time I read them!

5 out of 5 stars Foxtrot is the Greatest!.......2001-12-10

This is a comic strip that I could read over and over and still get a kick out of. I have read all the books and they are all great. Bill Amend is a very talented at this game, and I can't wait for the next book! I thoroughly suggest these books; everyone that I've suggested them to gets hooked on them too!

5 out of 5 stars Foxtrot is the best........2000-03-06

This book brings the "funny". after the recent end of the Peanuts cartoon and the steady decline of Garfield I believe that Foxtrot should become the new "hit" comic. this comic brings everyday life of the american family and puts a terrific funny spin on it. well it's up to you to read this book but if you do you will be laughing for hours and that goes for all the other books as well.

5 out of 5 stars What a sad world we live in..........2006-08-19

It IS sad that we live in a world where its ok to make a profit totally at the expense of another person. Or people. Like, Mexican people, for example, where American factories are paying Mexican workers not enough to live, then shippiong the products to the US and exporting them back to Mexico again and selling them at import prices, so the workers who made them now can't afford to buy them, or anything else, for that matter, except rice and tortillas.

I think it is also sad that we live in a world where someone is so celebrted for being shallow and mediocre, if (debatably) pretty. She's famous for being famous, as the description here says. What did she ever do to earn the money? Her life story is the very epitome of what is wrong with our society -- that she could be paid so much money for doing nothing except indulging her every whim, while we pay those Mexican factory workers $1.25 an hour to work themselves arthritic.

I don't know Paris, she may actually be very different from how she portrays herself in the media, but I DO know those factory workers (some of them), and they are good, honest people who are getting the short end of the stick because we worship the fantasy of being Paris Hilton and don't pay any mind to the cost to the millions of people at the bottom of the totem pole whose misfortunes are the bricks which hold those few elite in their coveted positions. So, yeah, a little paradoxical humor at Paris's expense is warranted, in my opinion, because she spends more money on a party in a single night than millions of families have in an entire year to provide food, clothing, shelter, medical expenses, or education.

I'm more a Jolie fan (if I were into that sort of thing), because she proves an active interest in other human beings by using her fame and fortune to benefit other people. But it is true that Paris is the person people love to hate. She chooses to be that person -- whatever else she may be, she's not stupid. She knows how people see her, and she plays the role, because it keeps her famous. No, I don't feel bad for her. I don't hate her either. But I am amused at this joke at her expense. She of all people can afford it, after all; she IS a millionaire.

Halle Maria Berry is one intriguing woman. Her story truly adds credence to the fact that looks aren't everything because her life has been quite a bumpy road, and she is often called the most beautiful woman in the world. Frank Sanello does a good job in telling us Berry's story; he includes very descriptive events and accounts of her life. One flaw of this book was the amount of times he mentioned Berry's beauty. Almost the entire world knows how good-looking Berry is, but he just brings it up one too many times. Put it this way; it's mentioned at least 20 times. Another flaw about the book is that a big Halle Berry fan would probably know most of the information in the book. For example, me. Although I was aware of many of the stories told, I also learned new things about her. Sanello got the vast majority of his infrormation from interviews and magazine articles.

Halle Berry was born in Cleveland, OH to Jerome and Judith Berry. Berry had also been close to her mother, but never truly had a strong union with her father because he began abusing her older sister Heidi and their mother early on. He never abused Halle, but because of his abuse to the other members of her family, she stayed away from him. In this publication, we learn that Halle Berry will do anything to get what she wants for her career. Most of the movies she has been in, she had to beg, and do some very unlikely things to get her roles. For example, for her first movie, "Jungle Fever", director Spike Lee dismissed the idea of Berry being the crackhead. At first Berry begged and begged but Lee remained adament about not giving her the role. But, Berry didn't bathe for 10 days, removed all make-up and visited crack houses to truly get the essence of the life of a crackhead! We also learned about the flack Berry faced for not only starring in "Monster's Ball", but winning the Oscar for it!

Berry's love life has been as difficult as her movie career. Her plethora of failed relatinships are talked about in great detail. One would think that a man would feel fortunate and privledged to have Miss Halle on their arm, and for a period of time they feel that way, but after awhile, the relationship spirals down. Perhaps the most mind-boggling aspect of this is her relationship with singer Eric Benet. There didn't seem to be a major problem in their relationship aside from the fact that he was "Mr. Halle Berry". But, after he married her, he became one of the biggest philanderers you'd ever want to see!

This is an overall interesting read and made me respect Halle Berry even more. This book would be great for someone who would like to know how she got to where she is, and the struggles she faced upon getting there. She has, in a sense, lived a "stormy life".

Harness the Power of TR's Charisma
Theodore Roosevelt was a leader of uncommon strength who, through the sheer force of his extraordinary will, turned America into a modern world power. Thrown headfirst into the presidency by the assassination of his predecessor, he led with courage, character, and vision in the face of overwhelming challenges, whether busting corporate trusts or building the Panama Canal. Roosevelt has been a hero to millions of Americans for over a century and is a splendid model to help you master today's turbulent marketplace and be a hero and a leader in your own organization.

                            5 out of 5 stars Lessons from a "Roughrider".......2005-03-17

Theodore Roosevelt is an excellent person to study for one simple reason: He believed that his leadership abilities were learned and developed. By reading and studying other leaders, he made a concerted effort to develop himself (much like the way he developed his weak and sickly body into the "roughrider" we now remember). Roosevelt wrote of Ulysses S. Grant, "It is part of the man's greatness that now we can use his career purely for illustration." You and I can say the same thing about TR.

4 out of 5 stars Leadership as Service, Character, Courage, Common Sense.......2003-04-19

Theodore Roosevelt was many different things to many different people. Most of all, he was a charismatic leader who inspired himself and others to great achievements in a time when America was starting to come of age as an emerging world power. James Strock did a tremendous job in capturing the many leadership lessons that can be learned from the life and times of this extraordinary man.

The book's thirteen chapter titles do a good job of describing Roosevelt's leadership effectiveness: "Leading-wherever you are," "Always learning," "Action, action, and still more action," "Getting the best on your team," "Putting action into words," and "Putting words into action" to name just a few. At the end of each chapter is a listing of Roosevelt's leadership take-aways that can serve as an excellent primer on leadership. For example, "A leader should aim to build a life based on service, not a career based on advancing up a series of positions," "Strive to exemplify character," "Courage (physical and moral) can be developed as an act of will," and "Use simple, down-to-earth stories to communicate complex issues."

Throughout the book, Strock made great use of many colorful Roosevelt quotes and anecdotes, what I affectionately call, "Teddyisms," to reinforce his main points and help bring those points to life. Besides extensive research into the life, writings, and others' personal recollections of Roosevelt, Strock made many effective references to respected current leadership and management experts such as Stephen Covey, Peter Drucker, John Maxwell, and Warren Bennis. Those references proved to me that Roosevelt's leadership has stood the test of time and is certainly still applicable today.

This book helped reinforce my opinion of Roosevelt as a morally and physically courageous leader who was not afraid to follow his vision and convictions despite often open and powerful public opposition. After reading this book, I can understand why many people view Roosevelt as a benchmark against which to judge public servants, especially presidents.

5 out of 5 stars Riding Again into the 21st Century.......2001-05-31

The fact that Teddy Roosevelt was president during America's transistion into the 20the century, and the important lessons and context his actions and personality offer for American leadership in the 21st century, is the fulcrum for this very compelling and insightful book. TR was really the first modern president, who used the bully pulpit like no president before him (and without benefit of a T.V. camera), to inspire notions of preservation and conservation, corporate and personal responsibility, technological progress and innovation, and U.S.leadership in the world domain. There are many parallels to today, but some revealing contrasts, too. For example, the same man who built a world-class Great White naval fleet over the objections of many in Congress, organized the first international environmental conference. (Nowadays, as citizens and leaders, we tend to polarize between "pro-environment" and "pro-commercial development" and/or "pro-military".) As Strock writes, TR was indeed a "preacher militant"! Strock has written a sequel, in essence, to his very well-regarded book on Reagan and leadership; ironically, the Reagan book dealt with an "old-fashioned" presidency in terms of instilling fundamental values and restoring confidence in the American story, while TR, who predates Reagan as president by 80 years, is seemingly more of a "modern" president, invoking change and sustaining bigger government for specific purposes, and challenging all around him to soar to new heights. Both have many common traits: each lived the life personally that he espoused for the general population, neither trusted (fully) large combinations of businees (or labor) interests, each implored all Americans to recognize their special place in world history, and each could be mule-like in their insistence on what he considered America's best interests. As to the particular times in which TR led, I was struck by how relatively tiny was the domain of the Federal government (the IRS did not even exist!), and was reminded of how much imbalance existed as a result of the industrial age, similar in certain respects to the modern discrepancies associated with the new technical era. While TR certainly believed that people controlled their own destinies, he obviously led the charge for government action on many issues of social concerns, and felt very strongly that business had obligations and accountability accordingly. Thus, Strock has written a "modern" book about a modern turn-of-a-century president, whose ideas never go out of style. While written with a light touch, it is inspiring and thought-provoking. I hope he continues his practical series on presidential leadership.
