Book Description

More than 120 classroom-tested art projects are at your fingertips with this resource. Arranged according to the eight design elements (e.g., composition, line, texture) and by grade level, these activities reference art history, and many are multiculturally based and curriculum integrated. While most use standard classroom art materials, some use more specialized equipment and media for educators seeking a more complex approach. The book is illustrated with actual student work. Grades K-8.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book for teaching the elements of art.......2000-02-17

This is a great book for teaching the specifics of art and design. The lessons are easy to follow and they are marked for different ability level. The only unfortunate thing about this book is that the art projects are shown in black and white; the section on color is hardly done any justice in this format. However, if you are a teacher looking for interesting projects for your students or someone trying to brush up on art, this book is for you.

Book Description

Once upon a time, most clothes were sewn at home. Now and ever after, home-sewing patterns will provide the best blueprint to a time when suddenly everyone could dress like the models in magazines. The most popular 1940s styles-from couture to everyday workclothes, ensembles, sportswear, lingerie, and evening dresses, plus toys, needlework and gifts-are presented here in 550 color photographs of pattern envelopes from companies like Advance, Butterick, Hollywood, McCall, Simplicity, Vogue, and others. For the home seamstress, this will be a trip back in time. For artists, costume designers, and collectors it's an invaluable guide. The text outlines the beginnings of the huge pattern industry, its evolution and impact on fashion. A wide array of pattern-related items is presented including publications and advertising, display dolls, tools, and various forms of packaging. The pattern envelope illustrations are wonderful period drawings of '40s fashions. A refreshing approach and an important first book on this growing field of interest.

5 out of 5 stars better than 5 stars.......2007-06-25

this is one of the great fashion books. very well put together, interesting...unlike most fashion books (in terms of text) and classy and LOTS of images. Both of Laboissonniere's books are great.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable Resource.......2001-06-10

As a dealer in vintage patterns, (...) Wade's book is an indispensable resource in accurate dating of my pattern inventory. This in turn helps me to better serve my customers. Wonderful color examples of all the catagories, styles and companies.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful resource for forties fashion and sewing.......2000-06-19

This book begins with a lot of information about sewing pattern companies, sewing in the beginning half of the century, and fashion changes during the forties that are worth the price of this book. The second half is all reproductions of the fronts of pattern envelopes which provide inspiration for design as well as pointing out how much more advanced the average sewer seemed to be in the forties compared to today.

5 out of 5 stars Fashion when style and beauty counted.......1998-09-04

This is a wondreful look at a time in fashion when looking your best when in public or private did matter. The fashions are an inspiration to those who love classic design. The only statement being made by these fasions are upbeat ones. Thanks for a great book that any sewer will treasure forever!!

5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Illustrated Collection of 40's Fashion.......1998-06-28

I was amazed to receive this book. I learned about how rationing during WWII affected clothing and fashion. I saw how fashion evolved during a decade that began with war and ended with Paris reviving their Haute Couture.

I think that the one aspect of Blueprints Of Fashion that caught me completely by surprise was the nostalgic feeling that looking at home sewing catalogue illustrations returned to me. I remember spending hours browsing through catalogues with my Mom during the 60's and 70's. I noticed the change of illustration styles, and the use of more photography, throughout those 2 decades of the big 3--Simplicity, Butterick/Vogue, and McCall's. In the 40's there were many more brands and that much more variation in illustration styles.

Mr. Laboissoniere has done a great job of grouping the pattern face cards into a journey through the fashionable 40's. Even though he meant this as a guide for collectors, there are so many facets to his research that he has created something truly extraordinary.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended reading for all Teen Titan fans.......2006-03-04

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the popular New Teen Titans DC comic book series, Titans Companion is an engaging survey of the history of the series through interviews with creators Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Len Wein, Eduardo Barreto, and other fan favorites. A comprehensive Silver Age section also has interviews with Neal Adams, Nick Cardy, Dick Giordano, among others. Illustrated with black-and-white comic panels and rare character sketches, Titans Companion is a "must-have" for fans of the series, or anyone interested in a behind-the-scenes look at creative decisions in the comic book industry (such as choosing to dress Nightwing, formerly Robin, in dark colors to make him less of a target but exposing some of his chest to appeal to female fans, now that his legs are covered). Very highly recommended reading for all Teen Titan fans.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-01-30

Top notch retrospective of the early Titans eras. Not quite as good as the All-Star Companion, but enjoyable nonetheless. It's definitely a must-own for Titans fans!

5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes stories of the Titans.......2006-01-18

I stumbled on this book almost by accident. It contains numerous interviews of the Titans creators, allowing the reader to get an inside look at the group from the 60s to the mid 90s. The emphasis is naturally on the most successful run of their history-the Wolfman/Perez years of the 80s. Anyone looking for a synoposis of each issue will be disappointed, as this is not the book's focus.

5 out of 5 stars If you're not already one, this'll turn you into a Titans fan!.......2006-01-02

The Titans Companion is a great source of information for fans of the world's greatest teen super-group. It's formatted with dozens of interviews with just about everybody who's ever worked on Teen Titans, The New Teen Titans, Tales of the Teen Titans, New Titans, Team Titans, and whatever other incarnation the teams had. Cadigan has taken the liberty of breaking up certain interviews (Wolfman and Perez come to mind) chronologically, which allows you take in the Titans one era at a time. Reading from start to finish, it's amazing to witness the transformation from a team of four sidekicks trying to bridge the generation gaps to a horde of dysfunctional, de-aged, gritty warriors.

If you're hoping for a comic-by-comic guide of what happened with the team, stick to the internet. I was able to piece most of it together, but there were bits and pieces I needed some more help on.

The book has TONS of b&w artwork, either reproduced panels or convention sketches--they're fantastic!

As somebody who's never read much DC at all, let alone Titans, I learned that Wondergirl was originally just Wonderwoman at a younger age (ie, not Wonderwoman's sidekick). When she showed up in Teen Titans, all of a sudden an origin had to follow, and it's followed poor Donna Troy ever since! Deathstroke the Terminator, and Vigilante both sprung from the pages of New Teen Titans. Speedy's little heroin addiction apparently never came up in the Titans! And that there were a lot of character's I'd never heard of who've joined the Titans over the years, including the Joker's daughter, who was actually Two-Face's daughter, who called herself Duella Dent and fought as Harlequin (not the Batman:The Animated Series one), and who according to Len Wein in a lettercol of DC's Who's Who #15 "show's up at Donna Troy's wedding and Dick Grayson accusing (sic) her of lying. She admitted to the deception and points to her recent addition of 50 pounds, keeping her out of crime-fighting. Since she was never a major character, nor did she ever have her own series or origin, it was decided to omit her reference (from Who's Who) since she will not be seen again."

Suffice it to say, I'm now dying to find a Titans issue with Duella as an active crimefighter in it, to see how the writer's played it. There's a lot of examples like this, where I felt like I was at a a MENSA party or something. I was mingling, meeting people, and listening to fascinating conversations, the whole time thinking "man, I've *got* to find out more about this!"

-Tom

5 out of 5 stars A great read, especially with Infinite Crisis going on now!.......2005-12-29

I picked up this book on a lark, having recently discovered TwoMorrows Publishing and quickly becoming a great fan of the company.

I grew up reading mostly Marvel comics in the 80's, with the exception of maybe a Batman here or there. Over the years, I've caught up on a few of DC's bigger events through some trades, but I'm no expert in DC continuity. The only Teen Titans I'd ever read was "the Judas Contract".

This book takes the reader chronologically through the evolution of the Teen Titans, from the time when it was basically "the Justice League's sidekicks" to it's present day incarnation. We take this journey via interviews with or articles on just about every creator involved with Titans. Every page has great artwork, and most of it is previously unpublished commissions to fans (a TwoMorrows hallmark).

While I think the book is designed for somebody who's a Teen Titans fanatic, it was detailed enough that I could follow along, and most of the plot points were articulated well-enough in the interviews that I didn't have to have read every issue of Teen Titans. That said, there were some moments when I scratched my head and thought "what's a baxter-series?" or something like that? Most of these were quickly rememedied with google or yahoo's help. In fact, here's my recommendation: Do an online search of Teen Titans, and read through the issue summaries--yup, they're out there. If it sounds interesting to you at all, pick up the book. That should be enough info that you're never left scratching your head, and it's also a good litmus test of your Titans fever. I know I've already started plunging through the quarter bins for the wolfman/perez stuff that hasn't been collected in trades yet!

A great book that any comic fan will love!

      5 out of 5 stars A Prairie Home Christmas.......2001-12-01

I originally bought this CD as a gift but was curious enough that I opened it and played it. I love it. Obviously, I'm keeping that copy and buying another! I am from the Midwest and haven't been back for Christmas in years. Garrison Keillor's wit and homespun stories, the music and the humor all make me anxious to get back there this year. A Prairie Home Christmas is just the kind of down-to-earth Christmas we all need....

4 out of 5 stars A fine Christmas entertainment collection.......2001-01-28

This collection of moments from Christmastime broadcasts of "A Prarie Home Companion" is a very good one. It features excellent music, much of it by the "Hopeful Gospel Quartet". It also has wonderful skits, including Tom Keith's amazingly funny sound effects version of the twelve days of Christmas, and a re-telling of the Christmas story by Garrison and the other actors. The only complaint that I would have about this CD set is that Garrison's brilliant storytelling is not the feature of this compilation. Nevertheless, this compilation is without question worth getting for all of those who enjoy "A Prarie Home Companion".

Forty years ago, Foster's band argued: the new turquoise, wedge-shaped, 17W, Watkins Dominator was far too powerful. On tour twenty years later, Foster's bass rig alone is 1,500W. Idiosyncratic, charming, naive, optimistic, and very funny, this is the story of how UK's top musicians began.

The author of the rags-to-riches real estate bestseller Nothing Down for the '90s presents advice drawn from 20 years of writing and promoting get-rich books through seminars, infomercials, and home-study courses. In Multiple Streams of Income, Robert G. Allen shows you how to create income with little or no investment. Says Allen: "Today, very few families can survive on less than two streams of income. In the volatile future, you will need a portfolio of income streams--not one or two--but many streams from completely different and diversified sources."

Beginning with advice on controlling spending and increasing savings, Allen hits his stride in chapters on stock market and real estate investing. He draws on the investment advice of others, including Peter Lynch, and even suggests that you invest in Berkshire Hathaway and let Warren Buffett manage your money. Allen also shares his real estate strategies for finding motivated sellers, securing creative financing, and buying foreclosures and tax liens. Additional chapters cover multilevel-network marketing, information and product licensing, and marketing on the Internet. Throughout are checklists, work sheets, and testimonials, as well as pointers to more articles and materials on the author's Web site. It's useful to have so much information so concisely and well explained, and many who read this book will find it hard to resist implementing one, if not several, of Allen's recommended income strategies. --Scott Harrison

Knowledge of the structures and properties of nonferrous metals, such as aluminum, is required knowledge for all materials scientists, chemists, and metallurgists. However, existing books often include this topic with their description of ferrous metals. Because ferrous metals (steel and cast iron) are by far the most widely used metals, coverage of nonferrous metals in these books is cursory or absent. For this reason there is a need for a book that deals with nonferrous metals.

3 out of 5 stars Can You Make Multiple Streams Of Income Online?.......2007-05-23

I first learned of the term Multiple Stream Of Income from Robert Allen the No Money Down guy. He pretty much coined the phrase all the way to the bank. I read his book a few years ago, it was the number one best seller on The New York Times Best Seller's list. I was so thrilled to get my hands on it I just knew that this was the long awaited manuscript that we marketers wanted to give it a test drive.

It was a good read, however it had too many twist and turns and it cost a bit much at the time to implement his methods from just one website, and it was not the results I was looking for. I knew there had to be a better way for us new marketers to reach that illusive extra income stream.

I begin to wonder, can you actually make multiple streams of income online? I continued my search for the missing pieces of the MSI puzzle that would put it altogether; With the many product offers that promises you the world if you would try this program, and use it with this technique, and you'll surely be on your way to riches.

After several years of online seeking, I can now say I've been to the mountain top of internet marketing offers, and what I have come down with is this; there are many claims being made about multiple streams of income online that you can use right now in your marketing campaign to a steady flow of extra income. I found this unique website with multiple streams of income you can get from Google, Ebay, Clickbank, CJ; etc. All from one cool little website. I have studied the likes of Tim Knoxs, Brad Callen, Mike Falsaime; etc, and a host of other top online experts in this field of multiple streams of income and their proven systems, and what I have found will surprise you.

Don believes that less than 5% of the marketers are making it online, and 95% of the programs online are a waste of money. There are no more secrets, just the facts. If you are focus you'll learn one of many proven marketing tools I'll show you to help you along your way to build Multiple Streams Of Income Online the correct way.[...]

        5 out of 5 stars Robert G Allen Rocks.......2007-05-08

This is a awesome "How to" book for amassing the wealth necessary to break the gravitational forces of depending on employment for your financial security.

First, control the leaks in your financial pond
Second, add streams of income to that financial pond - includes lots of ideas

You'll have to read it to get the rest. I can hardly wait to get my hands on some of the other Robert Allen books.

4 out of 5 stars A Smorgasbord of Options From Which to Pick and Profit .......2007-04-19

There's no doubt that the content in Multiple Streams of Income will have your head swirling with wealth-building possibilities.

I believe that the book opens the doors of opportunity in areas you may not have considered. At the same time, not every concept is right for every person.

I found myself skimming chapters I'm not ready to pursue and slow to absorb chapters that contain ideas I can capitalize on right away. When I develop a comfort zone and steady income through the strongest possibilities, I'll re-read the chapters that contained ideas I wasn't ready to develop. Perhaps this tip will also help you.

The section I found to be extremely beneficial was chapter two, The 10-Minute Millionaire. It masterfully explains how to value time so that you can concentrate on the multiple streams open to you. That's key no matter which revenue opportunities you choose.

I appreciate a book that identifies numerous revenue sources, provides examples, and includes charts with a visual perspective on what's possible to increase personal wealth. At the end, your brain may be on overload. However, taking action on just one idea from this book has the potential to change your life for the better.

3 out of 5 stars Alright, too many stories. No real meat.......2007-02-24

I was expecting to get a book that would steer me into the course of making some more money on the side. While it does inform readers of ways of generating more cash flow, each chapter seems to just be filled with non-practical wisdom on how to enter each money-making field.

4 out of 5 stars If you own a business, or want to .....read this book to grow your sales BIG TIME.......2007-01-25

The simple strategies in this book can be the difference from your small business staying small(shrinking) or it exploding.

Book points out the "gold" in your own customer list and how to create, expand and benefit from all of the relationships you have built in your business.

As a small business owner taking just a few steps from this book will help us increase sales using no extra money, just our time to work with our existing customer.

Use your web site for more than just a place for people to look at or read about what you do, make it a BIG asset.

If you have been in business for a while and think that just having a web site is engough, you are missing out on additional income AND it is much easier to capture than finding new customers the hard and expensive way.
