    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous flappers!.......2000-08-17

I referred to this book extensively while writing my historical novel, SLAPSTICK (LTDBooks). Since I also collect vintage clothing from the Edwardian era through the '30s, it also came in handy for dating and authenticating my own collection. This book has it all, from underwear to children's clothing.

    Book Description

Dubbed "The Jazz Age" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the 1920s were characterized as a decade of frenetic fun. In the fashion world, clothes began to lose the last vestiges of the fussy, frilly Edwardian era as they grew more svelte and "simple." This wonderful, in-depth look at the styles of the Jazz Age and the people who wore them covers the first half of the 1920s -- years that served as a prelude to "The Party of the Century," as Fitzgerald called part two of this free-wheeling decade. A combination of vintage images, professional photographs of existing garments, and period artists' illustrations vividly display clothing and accessories for men, women, and children worn from 1920 through 1924. Clothing for all occasions is featured, including evening wear, day wear, the all-important sports fashions, lingerie, and even wedding attire. Fascinating timelines place the fashions in their proper setting, describing each year's film, music, literary, and couture trends. Among the book's many highlights are rare French pochoir fashion plates and photos of authentic signed haute couture gowns by Patou and Fortuny. This informative and visually engaging book will delight fashion and history connoisseurs alike. A companion volume covers fashions from the years 1925 to 1929.

5 out of 5 stars A great fashion price guide & fashion history.......2006-01-11

This is a delightful book. Like a magic carpet, it transports you into the 20's. It is well written with great prose & great clothes

3 out of 5 stars The photos are fabulous.... the text, well, not so fabulous.......2005-12-30

Let me start with the good parts. The photos are absolutely superb. The detail and color is among the best. The clothing is fabulous and a nice variety is shown; gowns, shoes, hats, daywear, among others. The inclusion of period photos, advertisements, and other ephemera places the clothing nicely in context of the era. Also, the author includes a chapter on menswear and childrens' clothing which is a welcome addition to any vintage clothing book.

OK, the not so good part. The text could have used a good thorough edit. An overwhelming use of CAPITALIZATION and exclamation points was truly jarring. When the author starts to talk about the clothing itself, the writing gets more assured. But when she puts a brief overview of what was happening in the year she will be showing clothing from, the purple prose and mistakes are pretty bad. The idea of reviewing what happened that year is a good one, but the editor(s?) was clealy asleep that day when signing off on the proofs. Errors such as the misspelling of William Randolph Hearst's (Hurst?!?!???) name (p. 36) are just sloppy.

Buy it for the pictures, skim the text.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-10-17

This is the greatest book on fashion I have ever read. It gives the clothes a context with the fashion plates and vintage photos. The historical overviews for each chapter gives one a real sense of what it was like to be a flapper. Theres also nice comparisons between haute couture worn by the wealthy, and the fashions of the average woman.Highly recommended.!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Jazzy!.......2005-10-14

Just loved this book! Not only the great clothes and descriptions I expected from author's prior book (Vintage Hats and Bonnets), here she really puts the styles in context to what was occuring in the early 1920's - prohibition, jazz, even the Egyptian styles popularized by the opening of King Tut's tomb! A great reference for anyone reading or writing about this fascinating period.

    Book Description

By the second half of the 1920s, old-fashioned Victorian morals had gone the way of starched collars and cruel corsets and a "no holds barred" attitude reigned in their place. "The Party of the Century" had begun in earnest and fashions responded by climbing to the knees! Using a combination of vintage images, professional photographs of existing garments, and period artists' illustrations, this comprehensive book presents a dazzling look at fashions from 1925 through 1929. Fashions for men, women, and children are featured, including evening wear, day wear, coats and jackets, lounge and resort wear, sports fashions, and lingerie. Whenever possible, styles are shown with their appropriate accessories, such as hats, shoes, purses, fans, parasols, and more. Fascinating timelines place the fashions in their proper setting, describing each year's film, music, literary, and couture trends. Among the book's many highlights are rare French pochoir fashion plates and photos of an original haute couture Chanel evening gown. This in-depth look at one of our most exciting decades will appeal to fashion enthusiasts and history buffs alike. A companion volume covers the years 1920 to 1924.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Simply Fabulous!.......2006-07-11

Roaring '20's Fashions by Susan Langley is just wonderful. She has gone the extra mile by showing the advertisement or sketch and then showing an actual item that is as close to if not identical to the ad. I always looked at the magazine ads and wondered what the actual garment or accessory really looked like. Now I know. I will gleefully await her next book! The photographs are done well (good angles and lighting)and her commentary is lively. I would recommend to one and all! And I have.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fashions!.......2006-04-05

Another wonderful walk through fashion history. "Deco" is a very worthy sucessor to Sue Langley's "Jazz", continuing through the second half of the twenties. Pictures were wonderful, and the text bubbled with delicious historical commentary. This book was even more special as I attended a show and signing in Manhattan where I could see the clothes closeup and hear all kinds of tidbits of the fashion trade. Wonderful - I look forward to whatever Sue Langley's next book!

3 out of 5 stars Photos Are Better than the Text.......2006-03-24

I agree with the comments of a reviewer of the author's companion book, "Roaring '20s Fashions: Jazz." Buy this book for the photos, which are excellent. Unfortunately, the text has been poorly edited, with an overabundance of exclamation marks and capital letters rendering the content and captions somewhat amateurish and even silly at times. The use of period photos and fashion illustrations, in addition to the great photos of the vintage clothing, make this book a worthy purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The Roaring '20s Fashions Deco is a Delightful Book.......2006-01-17

The Roaring '20s Fashions Deco is a delightful book. A step into the world of Fitzgerald. Well written & researched and great photography

    5 out of 5 stars A Roaring (20s) Good Book!.......2006-01-14

I loved Ms. Langley's vintage hat book so well I was amost afraid to be disappointed by her new books on the Roaring 20s - I shouldn't have been. She truly surpassed herself with books that transcend the category of collecter's books. Yes, this book is organized and comprehensive. The clothes are fabulous and the photos of them due them justice. The fashion plates and advertisements are beautiful and greatly entertaining enhancements placing the clothing in context of the times. I must admit my favorite part of the book is the vintage photographs which along with the loving and witty narrative breathe a life and tenderness into this book that raises it far above a collector's guide.

        Book Description

New in our successful collection of books showcasing historical, every day fashions comes an assortment of photographs documenting trends in the mid-1920s. During post-World War I's economic revival, women emerged from an era of corsets, long gowns, and formality to express their independence. Sheath dresses were designed to mimic mannish styles, while hemlines and haircuts were shortened. Even men's suits changed, to include exaggerated shoulders and an emphasis on narrow hips. Children often were dressed to honor recent war heroes. More than 380 beautiful images feature hundreds of clothing styles from the catalogs of Bellas Hess & Company, and The Charles William Stores, Inc. Costume designers seeking to recreate an era, collectors looking for vintage clothing, and fashion designers looking for inspiration for today's looks, will all find something new here. 11 x 8 1/2 384 black and white and color images Price Guide

5 out of 5 stars The definitive original.......2006-11-10

What with all the confusion from differences between the japanese and english dubbed versions and the 2 entirely separate series released in japan it's great that you can finally own the great Yu-Gi-Oh! story in it's original format intended by the author. If you're still assuming Yu-Gi-Oh! is an annoying kids show don't be so sure. This original manga is uncut with violence, peril, and back story left out of the english television show.

This volume finishes Yugi's face off against Ryuji Otogi (called Duke Devlin in the american TV show) in Dungeon Dice Monsters including a certain fire escape seen you probably though happened somewhere else. Then it starts right off into the Battle City arc as Kaiba acquire one of the 3 Egyptian God cards and an evil mastermind plots to kill Yugi. Also the identity of Yugi's mysterious alter personality is revealed!!

5 out of 5 stars Great summer reading motivation.......2006-07-16

As the mother of 3 sons ages 8,11,15 and with only the youngest and the oldest reading maniacs, I am always searching for things my 11 yr. old will read. I stumbled upon the Yu-Gi-Oh!:Duelist series by accident. As my son already loved the show and had a Yu-Gi-Oh deck, I decided to give the books a chance. They have been wonderful. Number 10 was our most recent purchase and my son is set on reading through the entire series. He will sit and read now for over an hour if I let him. He also shares them with his younger brother and he enjoys them too. There are other series in addition to the Duelist in the Yu-Gi-Oh book line so I have plenty of reading material available that I'm sure that my son will read. I always make it a point to read what my children read and I find them to be an enjoyable read although the stories may vary slightly from the television episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best!.......2006-06-27

This was wonderful! The story came in exactly the way the T.V. show did (with a few changes) and the pictures were great! I was afraid that it would look like a kids story book (the display picture was lousy) but it was just like the rest.

          5 out of 5 stars Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist #6 (YGO 13).......2005-07-05

I currently own this comic book in French, and quite frankly, it's one of the best mangas of the duelist kingdom saga next to "Duelist #8"/YGO #15. There are many differences in the book that were quote on quote too "shocking" for television. On the contrary, I would have to say... more 'violent.'

For instance, when Keith goes into Jounouchi/Joey's room to steal his glory of the king's hand card, Yuugi catches him in the act, although, he is too tired to distinguish the difference between Keith and Jou--pretty sad, eh? However, in about five seconds flat, he wakes up and realizes that Keith is up to no good, and Keith slams poor Yuugi into the wall, and continues to beat him up. To put your minds at ease, however, Jou eventually comes to the rescue. Keith still winds up with Jounouchi's card, though.

The manga continues up from Yuugi's defeat from Kaiba, all the way up to the time where Kujaku Mai/Mai Valentine plays her Mirror Wall card in the finals. This means, this manga contains the entire battle between Pegasus and Kaiba, as well as the dinner table scene where they find out their opponents (which also contains some comic humor from Pegasus not seen in the anime). However, the Anzu/Tea, Honda/Tristan, Ryou/Bakura and Pegasus scene NEVER took place in the original manga. Nevertheless, you "do" get hints of Cecelia/Cyndia anyway. However, don't think that means Honda is completely neglected. He and Bakura go off to find Mokuba and actually get themselves into a decent amount of trouble.

I would recommend this book to any manga lover. (You will certainly get a kick out of it!) ^^

          Where do I start?

(A pretty good impersonator of) Mr. Rogers tells little kittens everywhere that "when you get that special feeling inside, that means it's time to visit Mr. Litter Box" in the "Mr. Rogers Catbox Video".

Guy Noir, the sardonic private eye, makes yet another appearance (minus the wise-cracking, tongue-twisting Pete), being handpicked by an ex-con-turned-poet to publish some poetic parodies in the Paris Review, including a hilarious take-off on Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening".

"Cold Weather" tends to cheer you up on those super-cold December evenings when the apartment has no heat (hopefully that's just me). Cold weather, according to Mr. Keillor can come in many forms including, but not limited to, your teenage son kicking you out of your own house because he's afraid of his friends coming over and finding the dad in the house.

"You come to New York looking for one thing, and you find another. And Bob Dylan and Carol Channing found each other," in this spoof of the young sixties generation livin' for today in New York City, hanging out with Truman Capote, Larry King, Kirk Douglas, Paul Harvey, and Mr. Rogers ("Found the mushrooms that were so amazing...right here in the neighborhood.").

"Little House On the Desert" is a guarantee side-splitter for any "Little House" enthusiasts out there, when Ma fakes tuberculosis in order to convince Pa to load up the wagon and get the heck out of Minnesota.

For Mother's Day, be sure to take your mom to "Mel's Big Boy Cafe" at the mall. Chewing is optional.

"Newt" is a toe-tappin' little tune about the former Speaker, which is sure to draw laughs from conservatives and liberals alike. Likewise, the Bemidji Boroughway [sic?] song provides a strong warning to ice-fisherman everywhere about the dangers of mistaking cigars, brautwurst, and dynamite.

I could go on and on and on about how great a collection of laughs this is, but I'll end my rambling with "Getting Older", my personal favorite from the three compact discs. This monologue warns us about the dangers of getting older: your grown children getting you as a present one of those stupid books about "the joys of aging"; similar to "Cold Weather", the teenage son lectures his dad on not dropping him off at the front door of school anymore; the vegetarian waitress goes ballistic when her patron orders "the 47-ounce beef-butt in the hot lard sauce" with french fries and butterbrickle ice cream.

In short (a little late for that), this collection has something for everyone.

          4 out of 5 stars very impressive.......2000-06-13

i found this audio book funny and very impressive because he really tried to make the listener feel he was in each situation.

5 out of 5 stars The best chess book no matter what your skill level.......2006-12-08

This book begins with the very basics, how the board is set up, how the pieces move, the basic rules. The book then progresses at a steady pace introducing strategy and tactical tools. The book goes further than just explaining principles, and offers "chessercizes" at the end of each section to ensure the reader fully grasps each concept before moving on. I have read several chess books and browsed many more and this is hands down the best one. If you play chess or want to learn, you must read this book.

                5 out of 5 stars Chess 1.......2006-11-10

This is an excellent book for beginners that does more than just teach the basics. It teaches skills needed for any level of play.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative, Excellent. .......2005-03-30

This is one excellent Beginner book; it is unique and very informative. The first 102 pages have a lot of basic fundamental information ALL beginners should learn. Pages 103 to 264 of the book are devoted to Tactics & Strategy theory of The Opening, Middlegame and Endgame-this is the meat of the book. Lev mixes games, theory and teaching diagrams artfully. The diagrams are clear; most ask you a question or two with the answers right there, no flipping pages to the back of the book to hunt for answers. Many answers are very detailed. This is a great study book for beginners. Reading it once is not enough. Good Luck.

5 out of 5 stars A great start for visual learners.......2001-12-07

I am a very visual learner. Apparently, so are Russian children. This book is written in the manner that Russian children are taught: a chessboard is laid down, pieces placed, and a question posed, say, checkmate in two. Your job is to figure out how to get there. In the book, the first half is composed of pages of such diagrams, each geared towards either explaining visually how a piece moves, its value in trade, its best positions, etc. It is a great way to learn the game.
The book starts off slowly, explaining how the game works. You then work through various parts of the game: openings, middle moves, and closings. This game really helped me to develop a solid opening.
I have always had trouble with the middle game; this book gives the basics for that. The second volume gives a much more in-depth treatment of the game; openings, closings, and middle game strategy. But this is the book to get for a new player, or for one who always seems to get beaten. I started out losing to the computer on its easiest level, now I still lose, but at least I understand why, heh heh. Seriously, it is written in an understandable manner, and if you're a visual learner, the problem sets are really worthwhile.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent help.......2000-12-04

Okay, before I read this I stunk at chess. I was getting beaten by a 12 year old and my cousin was champion of the family. The only thing I knew was piece movement, not the true intricate workings of the board and pieces, or how many points each piece was worth, or ways to checkmate a king. After reading this book, I beat my cousin in chess, whereas I hadn't before that time. What does that tell you?

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone in fixed-income capital markets.......2007-07-04

I have the 2nd edition and have found it to be ridiculously comprehensive. The text is well-written and organized (I find it better than the Fabozzi texts which usually have many different people contributing, therefore naturally being less fluid and organized). This is by far one of the best fixed-income books available right now--period.

The text is pretty heavy on quant material, however, it's written from a practitioner's perspective so I've found it to be very helpful at work.

4 out of 5 stars read this before going for it.......2007-04-24

This book gives basics of fixed income securities in a very intuitive way. It first explains building blocks for fixed income securities. I have studied these topics in pricing and finance theory, and then I bought this book. I couldn't imagine a better explanation in such a clear way for fixed income securities. I suggest this book to everybody who wants to understand the fixed income securities. I think it helps anybody who is interested in quantitative modeling fixed income securities and who is interested in trading such securities.

It first gives the basic background, the relative pricing of fixed income securities and fixed cash flows. It then explains the price sensitivity and hedging. The author has given a good explanation for term structure models. The last part of the book is dedicated to some securities: repo, forward contracts, interest rate swaps, eurodollar and fed funds, fixed income options, mortgage-backed securities and note and bond futures.

4 out of 5 stars Just want to mention a mistake of the book.......2007-04-01

On page 116, formula 6.1, the price formula for a bond is actually for a semiannual coupon bond, not as stated on the book, for annual coupon bond.
As a consequence, the dv01, duration and convexity formula it states are for semiannual coupon bonds as well.
I think both Tuckman and Fabozzi's books have their own pros and cons. Tuckman's book touchs more on the trading, which is interesting. Although it could be less rigorous in terms of treating the formulas. I own both books.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Fixed income textbook.......2007-03-10

After reading stochastic calculus for finance II by Shreve, another great textbook, I felt I needed another textbook more focused toward applications rather than theory. The book will probably not turn you into a fixed income guru but it will certainly give you most if not all the tools you need to become a guru. For physicists, engineers and mathematicians looking for a career in quantitative finance, this textbook is a must read. Read this book if you want a career in the fixed income market. Throughout the book, you will find useful trading cases which, in my opinion, put you right into the trading floor minus the stress of course. Dr Tuckman also provided simple and well thought exercises which help reinforce your understanding of the material.
