Book Description
In this collection of interconnected essays, Arthur C. Danto argues that Andy Warhol's Brillo Box of 1964 brought the established trajectory of Westen art to an end and gave rise to a pluralism which has changed the way art is made, perceived, and exhibited. Wonderfully illuminating and highly provocative, his essays explore how conceptions of art-and resulting historical narratives-differ according to culture. They also grapple with the most challenging issues in art today, including censorship and state support of artists.

THE book to buy... .......2007-05-17
If you're a hair-designer (or a costumer) for the theatre, this is an invaluable resource. There's nothing else like it... and that's why it costs what it does. The truth is- it's worth it:
As a "quick reference" it's faster, easier, more specific, and much more reliable than searching the INTERNET (and that's saying a LOT)...
While, as an "in-depth reference" it's also a great resource- with articles explaining the history -and significance- of developments in Men's AND Women's hairstyles.
Note: This book is amazing for historical research and inspiration -however- It does NOT claim to teach you HOW to recreate these hair styles... you need to do that on your own!
THE BIBLE for make-up artists/hairdressers/wig makers/fashion people/stylists/etcetcetc.......2007-01-03
This book truly is a bible (no offence). It covers every period and every hairstyle that appeared somewhere in this period. It covers everything from different countries, for men, women and children. It even covers facial hair!
It is a very valuable source of info and works best together with 'fashions in make-up' also by Corson.
Not to go without!!!!!!!!
Wonderful book!.......2003-06-11
I had been looking for a good history of beards and unfortunately the only two titles I could find specifically on this topic were unsatisfactory in historical breadth and research value. Thanks to Amazon.com reviews I was alerted to this title which covers the entire history of hair (face and head) throughout the centuries. There are literally hundreds of illustrations of beards and hairstyles from ancient Egypt to the present and highly detailed and entertaining chapters on the social, historical and religious elements that influenced something as "trivial" as hairstyle. If you're looking for a good book on the history of hairstyles this is it and if you're looking for a good, solid history of beards this is definitely the book to buy...perhaps the only one. If one could possibly have any quibble it would be that it focuses primarily on North America and Europe with much less comprehensive coverage of Asian or Middle Eastern societies. The book was first published in the 1960's and has been updated every few years since. I'm certain that the only reason it's less known than it should be is because of the price which appears to be aiming the title toward the professional stage and film artisan rather than the "lay" reader who would find the text an unmitigated pleasure.
Fashions In Hair.......1999-11-22
This is a wonderfull book that details hair fashions for the past five thousand years. A must for anyone doing stage productions. Lots of well done drawings with both front and rear views. For the stage hair stylist this book will be the one you turn to over and over again.
Fantastic reference for stage hair!.......1999-07-18
This book has been an invaluable resource for our period play productions as well as a wonderful reference for the general public who want that "period" look for presentations, skits, and parties

interesting ideas ruined by bad character design.......2007-06-02
it's my third attempt at a konohara novel, and will remain my last. this one is a little better than "the man who wouldn't take off his clothes", but not by much. at least the sex is consensual (for yaoi values of consent), but the main flaw for me is that konohara can't write consistent, believable characters. imakura starts out being utterly despicable. which isn't about his obesity -- i don't care that he's fat. i was in fact looking forward to reading yaoi in which a fat person becomes one of the lovers; it's unfortunately generally not done. but not only is he rude, mean, incompetent, childish, and demanding -- once they're marooned on the island and he still has food, he refuses to share even when begged by his hungry co-worker. i disliked him from the start, and didn't buy his 180 degree conversion into a loveable cuddly puppy who actively contributes to survival; it was too abrupt. i find less to complain about regarding yuichi, though why exactly did he fall in love with imakura? his other head was doing some weird thinking there. his character also falls apart after the rescue; where was the go-getter and organizer from the island?
i really wanted to like this novel because parts of the story are original -- aside from imakura being fat (and despite some loss remaining fat while they fall in love) there's also the phimosis and later his personal growth in trying to carve out a new career for himself. the island plot, while somewhat unlikely, is actually handled reasonably well. these all good story seeds. but it just never comes together for me because i don't believe the characters. and the plot past the rescue falls apart completely; i ended up not believing their love for each other either.
the translation is so-so; it could be better, but i've seen much worse. the writing itself is on the level of a harlequin romance; about what can be expected from the genre i'm afraid. yaoi manga has the art to potentially make up for any lack of writing ability, but the sparse illustrations don't save a bad novel.
Good story, but worth the money?.......2007-03-25
Wow! My first yaoi novel, and boy was I surprised when I got it. (I didn't read that it wasn't a manga...it's actual text, guys!)
Not bad overall, but you can definitely tell that English isn't Narise Konohara's first language. To be honest, I've read fanfiction that's better written with just the same mature content. (Fanfiction . net)
There was just a little -too- much mature content. Don't get me wrong, I know that alot of people (myself included) are just drawn to that kind of stuff, but it's pretty much the same thing over and over until it gets boring. For example, I flipped to a random page 7 times, and it had pretty much the same stuff on it.
The first half has to be the best part. There's a plot (kind of cliche, but nicely done with some interesting twists) but I have to warn you that the characters change dramatically. For example, one changes from being completely childish, rude, stubborn, and otherwise undesireable. Within a few pages he's instantly reverted to being kinda clingy and needy. It's a bit irritating.
Anyways, I'm rating this 3 stars because it did keep my attention through and through. If you are a yaoi fan, this is a must have, but if you're indecisive because of costs, I recommend going to a fanfiction site and reading what's on there for an idea of what this is all about.
pathetic.......2007-03-03
If I felt like complaining about the man who doesn't take off his clothes by the same author so much more I have to do about this other novel.
The basic idea of the plot is not bad but the two characters are spineless and despicable, the writing less than average.
Try and borrow it before you buy: you could be sorry to have wasted so much money
A GOOD read!.......2006-10-06
Graduates of manga will love this refreshing story!
Yuichi, an Out gay man narrates. He's a junior executive at a pharmaceutical company who plays the "good little boy" in public while he's the mean big brother at home. Through the triple misfortunes of a dead cell phone, a senile boat captain and their company going bankrupt, he and his mama's boy, overweight boss are left behind on an island that because of a shift in ocean currents the fishing cummunity has abandoned.
25 year old Yuichi usually goes for a younger, fit man but as he works to survive in this abandoned village and with his lazy, spoiled 30 year old boss he soon finds himself beginning to go soft for this older man as Imakura becomes less spoiled and they slowly become friends.
In many ways this is the usual Yaoi story, but the beauty that Yuichi comes in see in his overweight boss makes it new and interesting. Also yaoi tends to be narrated by the uke, Yuichi is the seme and dispite the "mean big bro" attitude is in fact very emphatic and sweet.
I'm really enjoying Narise Konohara's novels, such as "Cold Sleep" and look forward to additional translated titles by this author!
However, "Mama" does include the short story "Present"- continuing the "Mama" story but this time in Imakura's point of view. I wasn't to excited about this short. Imakura has slimmed down and is now the usual, kid-faced uke. It was a bit disspointing since I liked "Mama" for the new take on the old story.
What a low standard to settle for, fangirls........2006-09-21
I'm not even going to comment on the storyline, because I practically had to pick it out of the utter *wreck* made of the English language here. Professional translations really shouldn't read like 2nd year college student efforts. And if people are praising this translation, then I shudder to think how *completely* wretched the "Ring Finger" novels must be.
The translation of this novel is awkward *at best*, and terrible elsewhere. There are dropped words that are critical to sentence meaning (implied words in Japanese need to be added in English!), faulty sentence construction outside dialog (grammar, please), punctuation is frequently missing or in the wrong place and it's fairly obvious the translator took this job for the money likely not knowing just exactly *what* kind of tale this was - a fairly silly and unlikely romance between two lonely men. It shows in the stilted prose and slap-dash effort at getting any kind of natural flow to the dialog.
You can do much better, DMP. For shame.

A Dog's Philosophy.......2005-09-01
This is a delightful little book. Malcom Hall writes under the pseudonym of Edward FitzHound, employing the beguiling meter and style of Edward Fitzgerald's original quatrains in the "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" to comment on the world from a dog's perspective. Initially I was set to dislike the work, fearing that it would be a mere cutesy parody of its classic antecedent. Instead, I found seventy-five quatrains that cleverly lay stark such themes as life, death, love and despair by exploring them in relation to the short, submissive, and very simple existence of dogs. Through this expedient, Hall manages to be humorous, poignant, happy, and philosophical all at once. One can open this book at any page, read any quatrain at random, and inevitably smile. "Ah! My friends, let us bark for Years--/Bark at Strangers-and stranger-bark at Fears./We'll bark at what we cannot understand./We'll bark in Rage, and bark in place of Tears."
Charming! And available in bookstores!.......2005-08-06
A wonderful book, perfect for any literary buff. Buy it and 'howl' with delight.
Wonderfully original.......2005-08-06
Mr. Hall's ingenious take on the Rubaiyat delights at every turn. Anyone remotely familiar with the original will want this book. Savor it a few pages at a time, and do NOT neglect the notes.

Book Description
Bentley Publishers announces the publication and availability of ex-racer and acclaimed motor sports photographer and author Michael Keyser's "A French Kiss with Death: Steve McQueen and the Making of LeMans: The Man, The Race, The Cars, The Movie." This exciting new hardcover book from Bentley is part celebrity biography, part motor sports and part movie making.
This spine-tingling title and the "King of Cool's" intense headshot telegraph the excitement to be found under the book cover. Keyser's observant and engaging storytelling weaves together screen legend Steve McQueen's rugged, individualistic life, his love affairs with motorcycles, cars, racing, partying and women, along with a story of exceptional filmmaking, including the breakthrough, Oscar-winning cinematographic techniques used to capture the visceral essence of racing's most famous event for the silver screen.
Throughout 464 highly charged pages, "A French Kiss with Death" dazzles the reader with the "King of Cool's" roller-coaster life of adventure and accomplishment. The book contains more than 725 photographs and illustrations, most seen for the first time and many shot during the actual "24 Hours of Le Mans." Providing an unforgettable ride, "A French Kiss with Death" pulls readers rapidly into the exotic, heady, cutthroat world of international sports car racing. Keyser's longtime friend and ex-racer Jonathan Williams also contributed to the book.
Customer Reviews:
Not enough McQueen.......2006-07-17
Upon reading the reviews for this book, I was prepared for the extensive information, history, and background of Le Mans. But, I purchased the book because I was a fan of Steve McQueen. I realized for me there was too much info about Le Mans, before it got to the actual parts of the shooting of the movie. I still haven't finished the book and will continue to plow through it.
Fantastic.......2005-02-15
One of my favorite automotive films of all times is Le Mans. Not only is the race itself an epic, but the making of the film Le Mans was also an epic in and of itself. Steve McQueen was responsible for it from start to finish. It was a labor of love for him. But the movie was not well received by the critics... they felt there was too little dialog and very little plot.
For automotive enthusiasts, it's a masterful and unique depiction of the famous event - you'll feel as though you were there because of the very well done in-car sequences. I consider this film as a must-see for all enthusiasts.
This books covers the life and filmography of Steve McQueen as background. The main focus, however, is on the film itself - and the book offers an incredibly detailed view of the making of the film. You'll rarely see this level of detail about any film, much less an automotive racing film! It's surprising that this level of memory even still exists.
And, of course, if you are ever going to go to the Le Mans race itself, this book would be excellent background reading.
It's just like being there!.......2004-11-12
This book is for anyone that likes Steve McQueen, vintage sports car racing, or the movie Le Mans. Of course there's everything there is to know about the movie itself, but there's also a Steve McQueen bio, a history of that era's race cars, AND a history of the Le Mans race too! It's a big book that takes a while to read and once you're done with it, you're gonna want to read it again.
Glad I bought it.......2002-02-03
I'm not a huge Steve McQueen fan but love his LeMans film. I've watched it loads of times and every time I'm more hooked. I've just finished reading the book and looking forward to watching the film again as I know the experience will be even better. The information about the filming and McQueen himself shows the passion and desire for realism with which it was made. It took me a while to get round to getting the book but as a huge fan of the film I'm really glad I bought it.
Three books in one, all superb!.......2001-08-08
OK, I was half way to enjoying this book before I opened the cover...
1) I'm a big motorsports and Le Mans fan, having been fortunate enough to attend the 1999 and 2001 races so far.
2) I loved the film Le Mans.
But the book certainly got me through the other 50%...
What you get in this book is a fabulous scene setting of the history and significance of '24 Heures Du Mans', which is critical to show the importance of the event to Steve McQueen when he was preparing for and making the film - this was definitely a labour of love.
Also there is a brief but by no means lightweight biography of the man himself, again helping to build up an image of the actual person who was making the movie.
Then, in meticulous detail, you get the story of the build up, preparation and filming of 'Le Mans', with plenty of interesting anecdotes and events, particularly on how the fantastic crash sequences were filmed.
In my opinion you will enjoy this book if any of the below apply:
You are a motorsport fan with an interest in the history of the sport.
You are a Steve McQueen fan.
You enjoyed the movie and want to know how it was made.
If you fit into two or all three categories you will definitely be on to a winner!
Book Description
"This book does a magnificent job of tracing the history of
conjunto music and musicians, and does much more.... Peña presents a highly convincing explanation for
conjunto music as an act of working-class self-affirmation and opposition to the upwardly aspirant middle class with its self-consciously Americanized
orquesta music.... Fascinating and well-researched."
American Anthropologist
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but could have been better focused.......1999-06-09
Manuel Pena's analysis of conjunto's evolution is not so much a cogent layman's story of the music and its history, as it is an academic thesis on the socio-economic issues which helped forge the music. There are some interesting facts for the average music fan,..but overwhelming and a little boring is the sociological commentary which seems to go nowhere. Better suited perhaps for social science students. For a more succinct and readable history of the music check out Joe Nick Patowski's sharp Selena bio "Como La Flor," or the excellent "Billboard Guide to Tejano and regional/Mexican Music" by Ramiro Burr.

Great, easy to read book........2007-06-27
Does not get too bogged down in details and tells you what you need to know. at the same time, if you want to know the details, this book gives you a helping hand and points you to places where you can become even more knowledgable.
KHALID, from Kuwait.......2007-05-30
I have tried a lot of investing books but never been so lucky to have one of this kind. a very neat explanation and step by step guide for novel investors. I would recommend this book for any one who would like to step his or her first steps toward right investing career. a second step is always little easier than the first one, I would like you to read and understand what Pat Dorsey is trying to explain to you and then you may expand your knowledge with more in-depth finance/investing books.
Good luck for your investing.
good book.......2007-04-20
I bought this book because I wanted to understand every detail of fundamentals. Author did not describe all lines that are in income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow and he jumps around a little bit. I think book has useful reminders how to better read SEC filings and what to look for. Companies author mentions are in completely different place today and that gives us all reminder that things are not written in stone and changes comes quickly. Writting useful book on this topic is not an easy task, so I would recommend this book as supplemental reading. You might find here some useful information.
Excellent Book For People Comfortable With Math.......2007-04-03
Dorsey is one of the people behind the Morningstar system for evaluating mutual funds, stocks and electronically traded funds - the system that has made Morningstar one of the most respected names in investing.
Dorsey presents the nitty-gritty of investing in this book. Most of the book is very understandable, and is the perfect book for anyone wanting to learn how to invest effectively in the stock market. There is probably no better general introduction to investing on the market.
The only difficulty is the material from chapters 3 - 6, where Dorsey explains the math and concepts behind all of the letters you see when you look at market information (like P/E Ratio, P/S Ratio, ROI, ROE, etc.). It can be a bit intimidating, but (a) you can read the book and skip these chapters with no problem, and (b) it is worth the effort to at least look at the math, since Dorsey tells you what figures are helpful, what figures are not, what figures are very important in evaluating an investment, and what figures are misleading.
Before you invest $10 in the market, spend the money on this book. Your portfolio will love you for it.
Book that will give you basis for your decision.......2007-04-02
This is by far the best stock market book I read. I read a lot of good books, Intelligent Investor, One up on wall street. The Warren Buffett Way, The Essays of Warren Buffett, The little book that beats the market, and this is by far the most helpful ccause it guides you step by step and it really goes into details. Most of the books just narrates with generalities. I really like the part where it teaches you how to look look at the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow, how to compute the future cash flow and get its present value and how to compute the intrinsic value. After discusing the procedures, it completes it with real life example the goes tru step by step. After each chapter, theres a summary. Highly Recommended!
