Book Description
Venetian artist Carlo Crivelli (c. 1430–1495) is a painter whose individuality of style and mastery of powerful line have fascinated many, but whose life and art have remained enigmatic. This absorbing book, drawing on extensive research in Venice and the Marches, the region of central Italy that Crivelli dominated artistically from 1468 until his death, examines his paintings in depth and traces the fundamental influences of the Vivarini, of Squarcione and Mantegna, and later of Flemish art.
Ronald Lightbown, eminent historian of Italian Renaissance art, interweaves stylistic and iconographical analysis of Crivelli’s work with historical and cultural background. The author uncovers the reasons that led patrons to choose the saints that figured in Crivelli’s altarpieces, discusses the initiations of new cults and the devising of an iconography for them, and demonstrates Crivelli’s independence from clerical dictation in the symbolism of his still-life pictures.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, but could be better.......2004-10-27
This is a highly enjoyable book and I could hardly wish for a better level of the scholarship or a style of writing. I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in Italian art, or Crivelli's work. In fact, very little has been published about Crivelli and this book is something I was hoping to see published for a number of years. On the downside, at least a third (if not a half) of all images in the book are black & white, and some color photographs are of relatively poor quality (grain, bad light etc). I am sure Yale Press could do better than that.

Customer Reviews:
Yep, these dresses are definitely French.......2006-11-05
As a reference for fashion history, this book is very nice. However, the fasions that are included bear only a faint resemblance to what we in the US think of 1920s fashion. Where we think of Flapper Era fashions as characterized by straight lines, dropped waists, and cloche hats, the fashions in this book are a definite departure from that. Most of the dresses have round skirts and definite waist lines. When I say rounded shirts I mean rounded skirts. They are like balloons of fabric. I would recommend this book to those who have a real interest in. or curiosity about French fashion of the 1920's, then this will serve you well. Otherwise it is a disappointment.
fantastic/inspiring.......2005-10-27
I have lots of fashion books and this is one of my favorites just for the illustrations. There is very little text, but again if you want fun and inspiring illustrations this book is the best. I personally like these little drawings better than even Erte's illustrations.
A good book with some flaws..........2005-05-11
Yes this is a good book that captures the general feel of the time-periods. However, as an owner of said book, I must point out that more than a few fashions are repeated in the "years/chapters". This gives the book a clip-art feel and detracts, somewhat, from the over-all quality. The book is all in straight Black & White and some people might be put off by this but it preserves the charm of the periods the book aims to capture. So I say this is a fair purchase for those interested in 20's art and not too obsessed whith graphics.

What's so funny about Dilbert?.......2005-09-21
I always thought Dilbert was a straight documentary, and I never laughed at it, though sometimes I felt like crying, but I never let the guy in the next cubicle see me. Then they were talking about a Dilbert strip at lunch, and somebody told me it was supposed to be funny. I became a laughing stock. Dilbert humiliated me, and now I'm getting even by giving him one star.
Dilbert strikes again.......2005-09-07
Every time I sit down and read a Dilbert book I am truly amazed by the humor portrayed and find myself chuckling at something on just about every page. Of course, what's truly funny about it is how it actually happens and many of the stories portrayed are based on actual experiences people have had with their CowOrkers and truly memorable inDuhviduals. yes, there really are people like that. Scary, but true.
Don'T Step In The Leadership:A Dilbert Book by Adams.......2005-04-13
Having worked in the us and thus having had to take part of the corporate culture, this book sometimes is a bit to realistic. The endless and meaningless meetings that Dilbert has to endure remind me of the hapless and pointless meetings that we had at the library that I was working at. Dilberts boss is so much alike my boss and he shows the gross incompetence and the hostile attitude. I love their portrayal of the evil hr person catbert which is pretty much how most hr people are. One strip that I like is when the boss says that an employee sent a personal e-mail, this is such stupid policy since it makes the employee feel trapped and thereby they work even less and put less effort into it. Believe that is how it worked on me. The more they complained about this the more I ignored them and slacked of. Since I spent like 8 hours working for them, then some time every hour to relax is required. This is such a realstic portrayal of the american workplace that it is scary. The hostile and incompetent boss, the evil hr person, and many other classic charachters that I met whilst working in the us.
Yet another funny book.......2002-12-17
You have to like Scott Adam's work to appreciate this book, but I don't know many people who don't. I think anyone who has ever been to work or had a boss will enjoy this book.
I Stepped In It.......2002-10-26
"Don't Step In The Leadership" is a collection of Dilbert comic strips from 1998. Scott Adams has accurately captured the idiocracy of life that is called work. Whether it's the pointy-haired boss trying (and failing) to manage his employees or Catbert: Evil H.R. Director prescribing an anti-depressant drug for Alice, you will be amazed at how much this art imitates your life.

This is one wacky premise for a book: ask 50 or so women writers what they would do if they had a--ahem, you know, what the title says. What's fascinating--to a guy anyway, at least to one who's trying to imagine what it would be like to be a woman trying to imagine what it would be like to be a guy--is how many of these pieces aren't about sex; they're about power. According to this book, many bright, creative women believe the "Y" chromosome still confers awesome social leverage and means, in the words of one entry, "passwords, perks, and pertinent information I had never even dreamed of." Haven't the "engendered" politics of the past generation put a big dent in all of this? Fortunately, there is another side here too, put most succinctly in the words of crime novelist Patricia Cornwell: "I'd live just as I do now. I suppose that's the best thing you can say, as I guess it means you don't need one, because it really has nothing much to do with adventure and strength."
Book Description
Not since Kafka's Gregor Samsa awoke to discover that he'd turned into a cockroach has literature addressed such a traumatic transformation. In order to compile
Dick for a Day, scholar and feminist Fiona Giles approached hundreds of well-known writers, poets, artists, actresses, and academics and asked them to express what they might feel if they abruptly found themselves genitally altered.
From Terry McMillan to Jennifer Blowdryer, from Patricia Cornwell to Linda Sexton Gray, we find unexpected answers: hygienic, erotic, metaphysical, and even spiritual. By turns playful and sociologically profound,
Dick for a Day is a milestone in sophisticated humor and feminist literature.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Collection of gender/anatomy issues.......2002-02-23
52 women and 2 men wrote pieces for Fiona Giles discussing how having a penis for 24 hours might help them understand males, men, and masculinity. What Giles has collected are 17 art pieces ranging from drawings to photos and 37 written piece ranging from short essays to poetry to short stories. Among the contributors are Pat Califia whose essay addresses stereotypes and what "phallic envy" may really be about, Jane Yolen's modern fairtale, "Ask Isadora" advice column by Isadora Alman. Some of the pieces are funny, some are nasty bits of revenge, and a few are even quite insightful. I'm sure something in it will offend everyone but I also think everyone can finding it amusing and moving. Now when we have the reverse experiment?
Daring, Funny, Thought-Provoking!.......2001-09-02
OK, a few of the selections are boring. But the entire premise is fascinating, and this book makes readers think outside the box. As a woman, I felt validated by some of the writings, identified with some, was saddened by the truth of some ("The Pricks in Physics: A Historical Fantasy"), laughed out loud at some, was uncomfortable with some. Only a few left me unaffected. Isn't that one of the highest goals of a book, to stimulate thinking?
So-so.......2000-06-16
I bought this book partly out of shock value, and I kept it on my coffee table for probably a year. Most visitors who came to my house spent at least a few minutes with a story or two. There are some gems here (Adequate Dick, 1-800-yor-dick, and a few others) but many of these stories are sadly dull. Perhaps 50 women was too many to ask, as many of them had the same things to say. Most certainly an entertaining read and a great conversation piece, but at the same time it's little more than brain candy and mostly forgettable.
1 great, some good, many mediocre, a few lousy.......1998-04-23
Let me just say something about the best of the lot. Senator Sin's 1-800-yor-dick. Even though it reads like a female view of what is would be like to have one - hey, that is the purpose to the book...is it not? - I howled at the Senator's escapades. The price of the book is almost (not quite) worth this one poem. And I do think the book cover is clever and all...But, better luck on a second coming.
A shallow book.......1997-08-12
Dick for a Day seemed to be five different repeating themes: 1. This is a dumb idea and I won't contribute (usually 1 or 2 sentences saying this). 2. Man Bashing, why men do this and women either don't need to or want to but feel they can't because they are not "equipped". 3. A light exploration of sex from the other side, with another woman, or man, or dildo, or masturbation, a few are interesting, but most are shallow and boring. 4. A brief justification for a gay/lesbian lifestyle, I have nothing against gays, but I see nothing in it either. 5. I'd call the written equivalent of modern art, hard to read, understand, follow, or simply see if there is a message in the "art". Dick for a Day was a diverting 3 hour read, but I'd suggest getting it from the library, not wasting $12 on the book
Book Description
Gone are the days when an aspiring actor or actress could sneak onto the lot of a production company, drop in on casting directors, or have lunch at the commissary to meet the glamorous and famous. "It's not at all like the days when I was a teenage actor," Steve Stevens Sr. says. "At age 13, I was spotted by a for-real fin de siccle German director who pulled me aside as I swaggered through the lot and gave me a speaking part in FRANK WISBAR'S FIRESIDE THEATER, TV's first anthology show."
"Today there is no Schwab's Drugstore where Lana Turner and several others were discovered," Stevens writes. Recognizing this, he decided to write this book for the beginning actor.
SO YOU WANT TO BE IN SHOW BUSINESS presents show business from Stevens' point of view based on his 50 years in Hollywood. Sprinkled amply with practical, helpful dos and don'ts throughout, the book presents the basic information of how Hollywood works. In his view, "making it" involves more than finding onself in front of a camera. It also means finding one's true self, one's happiness and place in the world.
"I have represented struggling actors who never made it, struggling actors who did, top movie and television stars on their way up, and some on their way down. The knowledge I am sharing with you is intended to help you avoid the mistakes I see people in the business making every day, particularly beginning actors."
Here is advice on avoiding the rip-off artists while breaking into the business and taking advantage of legitimate opportunities. Included is crucial information about how casting directors think, getting head-shot photos that work, writing résumés that sell, finding the right agent, how to read the trade papers, understanding showcases and workshops, meeting with casting directors, what the Screen Actors Guild is all about, the casting process, and much more.
"It's simultaneously funny, historic, funny, inspiring, and educational."Doris Roberts, 4-Time Emmy-Winning star of EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND

An eye-opening industry reference .......2005-06-07
If your career aspirations lie in the show biz world, don't forget to consult actor/producer/casting director Steve Stevens Sr.'s So You Want To Be In Show Business: A Hollywood Agent Shares The Secrets Of Getting Ahead Without Getting Ripped Off. Stevens also has a background representing struggling actors: his 50+ years experience in the acting trenches lends to an eye-opening industry reference crucial to learning about casting, agents, and more.
ATTENTION : ALL ACTORS.......2005-05-09
This is an absolute must-have for all actors! After being an actress for over 20 years, I have spent countless hours reading books on the business of acting. "So you want to be in Show Business," is the most complete book I have ever read on the subject. Steve Stevens Sr. masterfully blends humor along with the no-nonsense truth about this crazy business. All while giving encouragement and sharing his passion. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Needed the Help!!.......2005-04-10
I picked this great guide up last week, finished it in a day, and am totally changing the way I approach this business! There are so many little things that the authors recommend doing that I would never have thought of--I am much more confident, because now I feel like I am fully prepared when I go into auditions... Thank you!
Actress/Director sees the light!.......2005-04-10
This is my first review of anything, but I felt like I needed to give this book a plug--even though it comes from a small, independant press, this book should be in every acting/directing/theater class in the nation. Cady and Stevenson take you through the inner workings of the agent business, the right/wrong approaches to auditions, the way to work in Hollywood while keeping your sanity, all while maintaining an easy tone that gives one the confidence to take a chance and try to be a star! Great work, and a bargain for those of us who thought they knew the business.
The Actor's Must-Have!.......2005-03-03
Highly informative and very entertaining... anyone thinking about embarking on an actor's life should read this book! Loved it!

First-rate guide to Classical performance style.......2005-06-09
Written for the performing pianist, Paul and Eva Badura-Skoda's guide to Mozart's musical style and how pianists can recreate it on today's very different keyboard instruments remains a model of its kind, a half-century after its original German-language publication. Translated into very readable English by Leo Black, the book is divided by topic area, with chapters dealing first with broad questions of sound, tempo and articulation succeeded by more specific discussions of ornamentation, editions, and technique. The authors do a tremendous service to the modern musician by distilling the essence of many contemporary treatises on performance practice, and prove surprisingly non-dogmatic--at a few points they even suggest altering Mozart's original notes to better suggest his original sound concepts. Among other valuable features are facsimile and print reproductions of unpublished original cadenzas to various piano concertos by Mozart, suggested cadenzas by the authors, and detailed interpretive discussions on three of the major piano concertos, K. 466 in D minor, K. 488 in A major, and K. 491 in C minor. The influence of the Badura-Skodas' pioneering work is apparent in the increasing popularity and proliferation of Mozart recordings on historical instruments, but their book is addressed to all pianists and musicians who care about Mozart. It is a positive scandal that this wonderful volume is not currently available in print.
an excellent point of view to Mozart's Piano Music.......1999-10-24
This book it's a really treat from a Master on the Piano Performer Authority.
Book Description
The Losing Trick Count is a way of measuring the trick-taking potential of a trump contract without the need to count points. It enables you to calculate the playing-strength and the tricks in your own hand, and to estimate accurately the useful tricks in partner's hand. Put these two figures together and you have the trick-taking capacity of the two hands. Used correctly, the LTC is a vastly superior valuation technique for accurate bidding.

An essential element of bidding in contract bridge.......2005-07-21
In the late 1950's, the Italians began a long streak of World Bridge Championships. And various people pointed out flaws in Standard American bidding. The range of our opening 1-bids was too great. And so on. But when I read the excellent book by Belladonna and Avarelli (two members of the winning Italian team) about the Roman Club system of bidding (this came out in 1959 in the U. S.) I was immediately struck by the emphasis on the number of losers in suit contracts:
The number of losers is easy to estimate. xxxx or xxx = 3 losers. Axxx or Axx or KJx or QJx = 2 losers. And so on. An Ace or a King covered a loser in opener's hand. To open the bidding, you needed at least 12 high card points and no more than 7 losers. Suit bidding put a big emphasis on finding out which losers were covered by one's partner.
In the present book, Ron Klinger explains a slightly more precise version of calculating losers to arrive at good suit contracts. He starts with a formula: Add your losers to your partner's losers and deduct the sum from 24 to estimate how many tricks you will take.
We learn details about how to count losers and how to adjust the losing trick count for trump suit quality, and controls. And there are examples about how to reach (or avoid) games and slams. It's certainly worth reading.
By the way, I think that when it comes to competitive bidding, most of these ideas often go out the window if your side and the other side both have long trump suits. The number of trumps you and your partner have in your suit plus the number the opponents have in their suit is roughly equal to the number of tricks you can take in your suit plus the number they can take in theirs! This is sometimes called "the law of total tricks." So you get in the habit of simply bidding the number of trumps you and your partner have between you, not caring if you make or go down.
But when you are involved in purely constructive bidding, I think you simply have to count your losers in suit contracts. And if you aren't already doing that, get this book.
Radical Improvement in Bidding.......2001-09-11
Bidding is over 75% of Bridge and the Losing Trick Count is a quantum leap for bidding. The LTC vastly improves bidding in suit contracts. This book both deepened my understanding of the game and improved my playing. This and OPENING LEADS by Ewen are the two indispensable books about Bridge.
Customer Reviews:
My favourite book on bidding.......1998-01-21
This is a fantastic book - although quite slim, there is lots of useful content. Using the principles it contains, I was one of the few that found the 24 point slam in the British Bridge League simultaneous pairs in January 1998.
Excellent explanations of this important concept.......1997-08-02
This is an excellent book that covers a lot of ground in improving a player's bidding. Though the concept is normally used by expert players, Klinger's book is good at helping an intermediate player (like myself) understand these ideas
Book Description
Innovation is an evergreen topic because it is such an essential ingredient for successful growth—and this book provides a new and fascinating perspective on how new innovations can best be found and developed
Managers from all kinds of companies will find this book of interest. This book is so well written and is filled with such engaging examples that we expect it to break out beyond a business audience to general readers.
It is similar to The Tipping Point in terms of tone, readability, and rich, interesting stories, which show how innovative ideas were born in intersections that combined arenas as diverse as card games and sky rises, Palm Pilots and carrots, airplanes and cookies, ants and truck drivers.
Offers practical strategies anyone can use to develop novel new ideas big and small, in all areas of life and work.
Note: The book’s title refers to an explosion of creativity that occurred in Florence during the Renaissance, when the Medici banking family funded creators from many different disciplines to come together to debate, discuss, and discover new ideas. The book is about how any of us can create our own “Medici effects” using the concept of “the intersection”
Customer Reviews:
Better than it would appear.......2007-10-01
This book is about developing ideas. It starts out very slowly and it seems like just another rehash of the tales told a hundred times before. It goes through the normal diversity is better arguement, which is a plus and a minus (he never gives us the minus). But as the book develops he provides a family of keen insights. He reviews much of the literature in an interesting way. Even old news is presented nicely. For example, at this point most people know that brainstorming does not really get you anywhere. Indeed, individuals will come up with more ideas than a team all working together, one after the other. He goes through this and then suggests alternatives. By the time I was done with the book I was impressed and I would recommend it to others.
Nice Book.......2007-08-01
You actually feel inspired when reading it. Just get done and you'l feel real effect.
Good for getting in an innovative and integrative mindset.......2007-06-04
This book was really easy to get through and I came away thinking more about how to keep my mind open to ideas from lots of different disciplines. It provides good examples of cross-discipline collaboration and why you should care. The book provides a few little tricks to get you thinking in a different way, but I found the subject matter itself to be more inspiring than directly applicable.
Interesting, thought provoking and you really can learn "creativity" from it .......2007-03-13
Copied from pg 2, "The idea behind this book is simple: When you step into an intersection of fields, disciplines, or cultures, you can combine existing concepts into a large number of extraordinary new ideas." Somehow you may vaguely have a similar concept as the author's in mind. What he did much more than the rest is that he had studied and consolidated on it, given it a an exotic name "The Medici Effect", and furnished it with plenty of vivid, interesting and memorable examples for others, presumably less bright people like me, to read and follow. In short, quite outstanding in the sea of books on creativity and innovation. Really helpful! Highly recommended!
Ultimately society decides whether an idea is both new and valuable...It is impossible to determine if a person's products are innovative if they have never been seen, used, or evaulated. pg 15
In essence, these people (Marcus Samuelsson, Charles Darwin) succeeded at breaking down their associative barriers because they did one or more of the following things: exposed themselves to a range of cultures; learned differently; reversed their assumptions;, took on multiple perspectives. pg 45
The most successful innovators produce and realize an incredible number of ideas....Pablo Picasso produced 20,000 pieces of art; Einstein wrote more than 240 papers; Bach wrote a cantata every week; Thomas Edison filed a record 1,039 patents. This holds true today. Prince is said to have over 1,000 songs stored in his secret vault, and Richard Branson has started 250 companies. pg 91
Research has shown, in fact, that the vast majority of successful new business ventures abandoned their original business strategies when they began implementing their initial plans and learned what would and would not work in the market. The dominant difference between successful and failed ones, generally, is not their original strategy. Guessing the right strategy at the outset is not nearly as important to success as conserving enough resources (or having relationships with trusted backers or investors) so that new business initiatives get a second or third stab at getting it right. Those that run out of resources or credibility before they can iterate towards a new strategy are the ones that will fail. - Clayton Christensen pg 130
Risk homoeostatis: people will compensate for taking higher risks in one area of life by taking lower risks in another. - Gerald Wilde pg 167
The most effective way to combat fear is to acknowledge it...For starters, you have to come to terms with what is at stake and admit that you might lose it. Often this means that you must be comfortable enough to know that if everything is lost, you can still move on. pg 180
interesting book but need to be better.......2007-03-04
1. the author have something to say, and he say it in a easy way that friendly to understand. it's good. But the author seems too hush to run into the conclusion, it seems if he spend more time in detail study, this book will be much better;
2. For the same topic, I suggest "A Technique for Producing Ideas" which is short but powerful; and it from a master's hand, if you compare that book with "Medici Effect", you will find how good it is, ;-);
