A must have for any bead collector!.......2007-06-27
A wonderful and very desciptive history of beads. Excellent quality photos, this book can used to help the novice or the serious bead collector.
Excellent photos, difficult reading.......2006-01-16
Although the photos of beads are excellent, I found this book far too much like a PhD dissertation, with the feel of a synthesis, having substance but written in a format which was difficult to read. Bibliographic references imbedded in the text just add to the unreadable style. The text is painfully lacking in the kind of information I appreciate, such as dating, geography, and clear references to the individual beads presented in the photos. And references to values of beads in dollars has no relevant meaning unless there is a time reference. As a reference book I would rate it of minimal worth. As a coffee table amusement it is acceptable, but would need far more photos to make it useful for that purpose.
Beautiful Book But Not For Beginners.......2000-10-29
This is a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated book, however, it is definitely for the advanced bead collector. Its main focus is on beads the average person could not find or afford. I am a beginner in the bead collecting world and needed a book that was more of an identifying guide. The chances of me running across a bead that was illegally excavated from an archeological dig in a foreign country are slim..and I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. I'm returning the book and continuing the search.
A stunning work of art........2000-07-22
This is a work of immense proportions. Robert Liu is both a scholar and an artist. This is a work which draws on both sets of skills, and the result is wonderful. For bead lovers it's a definative work. As a scholarly piece, it likely has material of interest to those interested in art history and world culture as well. It's an important book and one that would be sorely missed if it ever went out of print--I say this as one who's passed on books like this, only to search the world over for them when they were no longer available...get this one now. You won't regret it.
An outstanding and invaluable book for all bead lovers.......1998-03-18
Robert K. Liu is one of the foremost authorities today in the field of collectible beads. In this book he gives clear and succinct insight regarding collectible beads from all over the world. In some cases he gives approximate monetary values, but the book is mostly a celebration by someone who knows as to the place which beads have played in cultures around the world from ancient times to the present. A necessary help for anyone who collects or is thinking of collecting beads. It will save time and money.

Unio Mystica as Ultimate Purpose.......2006-02-08
_What is the Glass Bead Game? It is no less than the highest reason that an entire future civilization exists. It is the grand and ongoing synthesis of all knowledge into a unified, integrated whole (a Unio Mystica.) It is an attempt to forge a holographic intellectual world where all is interconnected and reflected in every part. This is a mission to weave the golden thread of significance and meaning through every part of a culture- science and the arts and the spiritual are all unified into a system of concentric, interpenetrating rings. All this is primarily accomplished by using the language of music and mathematics as common universal symbolism (the "glass beads" are part of a symbolic physical aid that was once used for this purpose.)
_It is no wonder that the book places the first origins of the game with Pythagoras, Gnostics, and Socratic ethics. No wonder that the League of Journeyers to the East also figure prominently in its development. To some extent the Game has been the goal of all sensitive and introspective individuals and groups down through the ages.
_All of this stands in stark contrast to our own Feuilletonistic Age where all knowledge, all culture, is unsynthesized, chaotic, and largely meaningless babble.
_The crisis that develops from this is that even if you accomplish this grand synthesis in some isolated ivory tower refuge of intellectual contemplatives- it isn't enough. It is necessary to reach out to the entire society once it is achieved in the same way that a bodhisattva attempts to enlighten the rest of mankind instead of individually passing onto Nirvana. The entire society must be made whole and sacred and not just an isolated elite. This is the realization that comes even to the Magister Ludi, the Master of the Game.
_For the game to be ultimately meaningful we have to coach everyone to eventually become Masters.

Beautiful and Nostalgic.......2003-01-03
As a quilter and vintage fabric lover I found this book to be a beautiful feast. The photos are large and clear, all aprons shown are displayed over period dresses, or on their own. This book is fabulous for collectors, or people like me that love to recreate vintage designs. I hope aprons come back, but even if they don't I will still wear them. This book is very timely, and it does deserve five stars. One word of cation, it isn't a pattern book, there are no projects, or patterns. It is simply aprons, in all their glory. A great coffee table book!
MY NEW FAVORITE BOOK!.......2000-07-15
This book is full of large, colorful photos of many beautiful aprons. It is also filled with pertinent information for anyone interested in vintage aprons. Reading it makes me feel "home again." I've been an apron collector for years, and I had the opportunity to view Ms. Cheney's apron exhibit in my town's museum recently. It was fabulous! This book is my new favorite! Thanks, Ms. cheney!
Unsung Heros of the Wardrobe.......2000-05-19
Aprons & Icons is for vintage clothing fans and for those who have a warm spot in their hearts for the unsung heros of the wardrobe. Documenting everything from groovy '60's styles to early 1900's workaday models, the book is well researched and beautifully presented. It makes a great gift. Each time I open it I discover something new.
Americana at its best.......2000-05-14
I just loved Joyce Chaney's book, Aprons:Icons of the American Home. It is the only book to date on the history of the american apron. The photographs are beautiful and the content is complete. Every page brings a memory of mom, grandmother or an aunt. This is a must for anyone interested in american icons, aprons or vintage clothing.
Captures the history and creativity of apron fashions.......2000-05-11
This book will take you back through vivid memories of aprons for cooking, home, and just fun. It also inspires a fashion sense because these aprons are timeless and fit today's world as much as yesterday's. Thank you Mme. Cheney for a great book and one that fills a void in the history of fashion and textiles.

Mandatory reading.......2007-04-30
Yeah, really funny -- me too stumbled upon this faboulous little book totally by accident, what a wonderful surprise. Flipping through its pages I became hypnotized by the artwork and originality. I put down the book, but could not stop thinking about it and finally bought it online many weeks later. The book strikes a deep chord and resonate. I recommend reading it one page each day to totally process its simplistic and honest beauty. It deals with dark subject matter in a very funny way. It is like a childrens book for grown-ups.
Cute Book.......2007-01-11
The book was really cute and made me laugh, even though I was in a crapy 'break up' mood. The book is a collection of the author's funny monograms and pictures. I would suggest going to barnes and noble or another book store to flip through it...it's the kind of book you only look through once, so it's almost not worth spending $10, $15 dollars on. Buying it used is also a good idea.
Most delightful.......2006-06-25
Yeah. This book is quite dandy. My girlfriend and I were walking around the bookstore roundabouts Valentine's Day lamenting what a horrific time of year it was when we found this splendid little book and whiled away our afternoon reading it crammed into an armchair in the store. It is completely hillarious in that random sort of way where things you didn't know were funny suddenly cause you to find yourself rolling on the ground in hysterics. We got some rather harsh looks for our laughter by the other patrons. Even though we had read it all in the shop, we still had to buy it. Split the cost in half.
She's my ex-girlfriend now and it's her book. I meant to ask her if it helped.
laughing about the awful.......2006-03-28
This book accomplished a nearly impossible feat... it made me laugh at my own heartbreak. A refreshing, hilarious take on what people go through when they've lost their love. I was happy to be able to relate to this book. Great for anyone who's ever eaten dinner with their cat and a mini-bottle of wine.
Painful and perfect.......2006-02-05
I saw this in the bookstore today. I picked it up and started flipping through it, and then kept flipping through it because I have a habit of self-flagellation when it comes to painful relationships, and this book is possibly the most achingly insightful look I've ever seen at the aftermath of a relationship that you thought really meant something. Don't read the whole thing in one sitting, though; it'll make you want to kill yourself. I bought it, needless to say. The line drawings have a precarious beauty to them, and the accompanying text is raw and agonized and self-revelatory. And the fact that it's written by a man gives it a slightly different flavor than a lot of the other "oh my god breakups hurt" books out there. (If you like this, I also recommend "The Peril of Magnificent Love," by Emma Magenta.)
Book Description
From Modern Humorist, the funniest, hippest comedy institution to come along since The Onion, My First Presidentiary is a hilarious parody of the rise of George W. Bush, as seen through the eyes of Dubya himself.
During the Republican convention, Modern Humorist produced a wildly successful series, "George W. Bush's Diary" -- written and drawn in the style of a third-grader's class assignment. My First Presidentiary takes off from that, adding the people, events, and screwups that have put their stamp on The Great Pronunciator's rise to power.
Highlights include Dubya's correspondence with his young Mexican penpal, Hector, White House redecorating schemes (a NASCAR motif for the Lincoln Bedroom?), and the deal with Cuba to trade the Florida Keys for three left-handed starters and a closer. Along the way, George receives help from key figures like Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, and Alan Greenspan in the form of hilarious "corrections."
America had a pretty rough time creating this Presidency -- now it's time to laugh at the results.

A round of satire down the hatch..........2006-04-19
I bought this for every member of my family, and we all voted Republican. This thing is ridiculously funny.
It's incredible satire. Even Republicans can laugh, that's how good it is. Liberals will of course find it right up their alley. Plenty of hysterical jokes at Bush Jr.'s expense. Parallel in brilliance to The Daily Show's "America: The Book", everyone should be able to laugh at politics and our national leaders, no matter what side they serve. The satire presents itself as Bush Jr.'s scrapbook, as if he were a giant man child with access to the "button". Very funny and ruthless.
It's so good they need to make a sequel. I'd buy another round, just to show my appreciation.
My only gripe is that, much like a glass of scotch, it's too short. Still worth owning though.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......2004-07-28
This is a great book. I especially like the letters to Hector, Dubya's Penpal. My favorite part is when he complains and asks to get the "aquaman" cup at State Dinners. Halarious book!
Funny, but not that great.......2004-07-18
I'm bug fans of Modern Humorist, and not a fan of Bush. This book is funny, but even with it's crayon writings and "memos" from Bush, the books gets tiring once you've read it once. Funny the first time then it looses it's humor.
Fun, fun, fun!.......2003-03-05
This book is simply hilarious. We all know Dubya is fairly dim, this 'scrapbook' shows how he might document his time in office (ie with crayons). It does get repetitive, but scores big on originality. Some of the political jokes are very well done. I had some good laughs reading this, which is all I can really ask for.
Could be the Onion, could be reality........2002-09-28
"G-dubbya" is shown in an extremely positive light in this one. His creativity and imagination are exposed. His mastery of the English language and grasp of reality are all set forth in clear detail. The pictures are well chosen examples of his artwork. I am a fan.

I've seen the movies already.......2006-07-18
This book gives a synopsis of all David Lean movies. It is useless unless someone needs to know about movies they have not seen. I wanted to read about behind-the-scenes activities in each of his movies and was chagrined when I looked over this book. I waited too long to return it so all I can do is warn others: buyer beware.

Assembling the flute and producing your first sounds. Left-hand notes, music notation, and 7 keys. Music by Lennon & McCartney, John Denver, and more.
Customer Reviews:
I suspect that it might help to have some musical background.......2001-08-21
I bought this book a couple years ago when I decided that I wanted to teach myself the flute. A couple quick notes: A teacher (or at least a friend who plays flute) will make life much easier for you.
The book is reasonably well illustrated and the musical samples provide enough interest to keep a motivated learner going. I can't speak to whether the instruction on reading music is useful as I came at the book already reading music. I just needed to know how to make notes out of the flute.
I do wish that a comprehensive fingering chart of all 3 octaves were included (there's a 2-octave chart with the 3rd octave scattered through the last two "volumes"), and I think that dynamics are addressed later in the book than they should, but overall it's a great read. my own experiences with the book are documented at don.dream-in-color.net/flute
A great starter book.......1999-03-16
This is a terrific instruction book on how to play the flute. I am relearning how to play the flute after a hiatus of about 12 years. I used a few different flute manuals, but quickly became bored with the same scales and uninteresting tunes. This book gives step-by-step instruction by using popular songs from modern artists including The Beatles, John Denver, etc. It's fun and exciting to quickly find yourself playing a recognizable tune. While scales and drills are always important when learning how to play a musical instrument, it's refreshing to have a book that can help you learn to play using modern music instead of waltzes and polkas.

Customer Reviews:
Problems with the IRS.......2007-09-07
Kaplan does an in-depth job of outlining problems within the IRS structure. Like most tax writers, the information tends toward avoiding an audit. The chapter on misconceptions of tax information is exceptional and with 45 million self-employed tax payers this is a group who are subjected to frequent audits. This number is rising as companies are down sizing and young people skilled in computer technology enter to workforce as small business owners.
This is an older volume, published in 2003 and some of the material is dated. If there is one area impossible to keep current without annual installments it is federal taxes.
Good information to have if you are studying taxes, but as help for the individual seeking information in their particular area it is lacking.
Nash Black, author of "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks and Pitfalls for Authors 2007."
How to Beat the IRS.......2006-01-28
Keeping up with all the IRS rules and regulations can be a real hassle. The tax code keeps getting more and more complex every year, in spite of countless promises by politicians to "simplify" the system.
This book does give some useful tips on how to avoid taxes. It points out specific ways that you can legally reduce your tax burden, along with key mistakes to avoid, unless you like the idea of being audited.
This book is written in an outline format, with boldface and bulleted text throughout. This is helpful, for finding specific information. You can quickly turn to a chapter that interests you, and then narrow down your reading by looking for the sub- topic that interests you.
Thw way this book portrays the the American tax system might not sit too well with some people. The author talks about the IRS, not necessarily as a great, friendly institution, but not as something to take caution with, either. He paints a picture of the IRS as being a firm, but reasonable institution and points out that we should not fear the IRS at all. We all can think of many, many occasions where this has not been the case. The IRS has abused its authority in many instances, and many feel that some of its unethical actions are directly the result of political manipulation against enemies, like in the case of auditing of high- profile individuals. But this book avoids talking negative, making the IRS seem like an institution that is reasonable and accommodating.
This book shows the reader many ways to avoid taxes, and much of the advice is sound, but I found this book to be a yawner overall. It's one of those books that could be viewed as a reference book, or a reading book. However, if you try to read the book from cover to cover (it's more than 450 pages in length), don't be surprised if your eyelids seem to become very heavy after every few pages of reading. This isn't exciting material, and it can induce drowsiness quickly.
This book has been updated and revised many times to keep it current with the ever- changing tax laws. It's the type of book that becomes outdated very quickly, and needs constant revisions to keep up with the times. My edition is already a couple years old, and I can already see where the technology chapter is way behind.
This is an ok book to have around, as a reference guide to reducing taxes and complying with IRS rules. If you don't want to pay a tax professional and you enjoy the challenge of working on your own taxes, then this book could prove to be very beneficial. For everyone else, it will likely just sit on a shelf and collect dust. Buy it only if you feel that you really need it.
Insightful.......2002-06-07
I bought TaxCut software, then read this book, I end up with a tax professional to do my 2001 tax. I am glad I read this book though, I avoided making mistakes and I followed carefully to my tax attorney's advice. This book is informative and insightful.
Solid, up-to-date tax advice for 2002.......2002-03-28
Now available in a revised and updated eighth edition, What The IRS Doesn't Want You To Know: A CPA Reveals The Tricks Of The Trade is a compendium of solid, up-to-date tax advice for 2002. Chapters survey such topics as what the latest IRS targets are; ten ground rules one must never break to win with the IRS; the thirty-four greatest taxpayer misconceptions; commonly overlooked credits and deductions; what forms should never be filled out; new tax laws enabling an innocent spouse to get out of debt; how to plan IRA and pension plans; the latest taxpayer rights; and what IRS people are really like and how to work with them. What The IRS Doesn't Want You To Know is a highly practical book and strongly recommended reading for every taxpayer!
Incorporating? If so, this is a wonderful text!.......2000-02-22
My annual salary grew steadily each year since graduating from college in 1994. However, there was hardly any money to pay off my credit card bills and forget about nice vacations or investing! I'd had enough. I heard of IT jobs that paid $50/hr. (or more). One day I had a conversation with an IT contractor with 7 years experience. This man had incorporated his own business and suggested that I did for the tax benefits. However, he was not very articulate as to EXACTLY what benefits there were to incorporating. I had to know. So I purchased Marty Kaplan's 3rd edition in late 1997. On May 20, 1998 I paid a law firm $300 to formally incorporate my very own company. I was instanly a President!(I still get a kick out of my title!) I have been contracting ever since. I think that I would have been contracting whether I purchased this book or not. However, Marty Kaplan's book provided a detailed comparsion between the different types of businesses. (i.e. sole proprietorship, partnership, Limited Liability Company, C-Corporations, & S-Corporations) Marty explained the financial realities, that precious few people understand. These truths showed me the pros and cons to each business model. All the financial decisions that I made were based on the information I gleened from this book. I assure you that I am infintely better off today than I would be if I were still at my 1998 job. But, what's more is that I'm better off today than I would be if I had contracted as a "W2 employee." (which is much easier in the beginning!) It was Marty's text that enlightened me! Also, Marty speaks plainly about being audited - "...it may happen and don't panic." Marty is completely ethical. His text simply shows readers how to prevent raising red flags. (i.e. certain IRS forms have been found to be guaranteed red flags and Marty advises how to legitamately report those same expenses on the "right" forms) Marty provides excellent anecdotes that will help readers predict the IRS's behavior and steer clear of its wrath. Marty spends the remainder of the book showing you how to maximize your legitimate deductions while minimizing your tax liabity. This book paid for itself in a split second. Thank you Marty!
