Great Book, Who stole my Blue?.......2001-10-27

I really like this book. The author created a standard color grid, red on the right, blue on the left, all the others in between, dark on the bottom, light on the top, except he used 3 color "patterns" rather than a single color in each box. Then he "inputted into our computer 180 image words that relate to the ways in which people percieve color, and also data on which words were associated with which colors." What his method is isn't expounded on

They linked the images to the words, and voila, you get sort of bubbly outline areas on the grid - these color combinations are elegant, these colors are fun, these colors are feminine or masculine, etc.

Since this book was first published in Japan in 1990, there are bound to be cultural discrepancies, and since this book is about the psychology of color, the 'conclusions' can be contested, though on the whole i think they're accurate.

My criticism stems from the fact that Blue in my book is missing. There's a page for "Red" and a page for "Yellow" and on, but no page for "Blue." There's a "Cerulean Blue" which is sort of turqoisy, and a "Light Blue" which looks like a darker Cerulean blue, and an "Ultramarine" which is closer to blue, but with a bit of violet in it. Who stole my blue?

A lot of the colors seem to have gone through a bad printing process as well, making me question whether or not I'm seeing the actual values. Ultramarine, for example, if you look closely (not that close, it's fairly obvious) is made up of lots of other colors. Am I supposed to hold it at arm's length to get an idea of what the color is?

Perhaps it was a bad printing.

This book allows the designer/artist to personalize color choices for each client in a nontraditional way. By choosing "favorite words" a quick sketch of someone's preferences can easily be obtained. The book is simple to use, and allows clients to easily visualize what type of colors they prefer. I have used it in a multitude of design situations: painting and interior design, clothing design and sewing, and quilting. I have never been a fan of the conventional "color wheel," and I use this book as a reference and illustrative source when working with clients -- almost all of whom are amazed at the effect different color combinations can have on their everyday lives.

This book provides an elaborate color theory that makes the color wheel look like stupid hippy frisbee. Colors are arranged in groups of three, and then grouped based on their overall feeling- it sounds preposterous, but you really will be attracted to certain regions more than others, and so will everyone else you show the book to.

The three color arrangements are particularly nice for Web page design, even though the CMYK nor RGB values are given. But this is forgivable, since this book was not intended for that purpose.

An excellent resource for anyone working with color, and a great tool for any web designer.

For anyone who cares about color, this book is a MUST! I wish the author would publish a more extensive guide. No other book matches this wonderful little guidebook.

A good guidline for beginner.......2007-07-23

I have started using Illustrator software recently and this book have served a good support for flat sketching the garments for women,men and kidswear.Is also gives tips to prepare portfolio, but you already should know basics of how to use Illustrator programme. It is nicely illustrated book and one can get ideas. But again its a basic book and does not cover all the aspects of flat sketching.

Great book! Even if you are a complete beginner you will find this book an informative and useful resource. It gets you up and running quickly with really simple, step-by-step, illustrated techniques for fashion computing using current software.

In my fashion design studio, we predominatly use CorelDraw, Illustrator and Photoshop, and found this book informative for each of these packages. It covers the basics - how to create flat drawings from vests, skirts, shirts, dresses to pants, and then moves on to producing mood and design boards, visualizing your design ideas using Photoshop. The section on creating a digital portfolio is also vital in todays digital world. Plus it covers womenswear, menswear and childrenswear.

It is well illustrated with great examples of flats, illustrations and fashion presentations from illustrators and designers in the fashion industry and from top fashion schools and universities globally.

dissappointing.......2007-02-27

This book has great pictures of fashion illustrations and is helpful because it gives instructions for 3 different CAD platforms, but as far as giving explicite directions on "how to", I found it lacking in substance. It seems that the really great stuff in the book was still hand drawn,scanned in and manipulated a bit with Photoshop. If you are absolutely brand new to these programs and need help gettting started it might help you. For me, it will be more of a pretty book to look at once in a while rather than a reference for problem solving.

It is fantastic! Top Marks!
By following the easy steps laid out in the chapters, I cannot believe how simple it is to draw and color my flats, scan and manipulate my fashion drawings and then bring it all together to create my presentations in Photoshop.

I use Illustrator and Photoshop primarily at fashion school, and the other books I own do not explain the tools and techniques as simply as this one does...plus the examples are all fashion and textiles based! For the price it's great value.

Highly Recommended Fashion Design CAD Book.......2006-02-10

This book is absolutely fantastic, it is easy to follow and inspiring. It shows simple techniques to create flats and fashion presentations using Illustrator and Photoshop. It even showed me how to create my flats using CorelDRAW. The techniques are simple and relevant and very well explained. It includes inspiring images and artwork by other designers and illustrators. It also explains how to create a digital portfolio. I found it very useful on my Fashion Design CAD course and will continue to use it even when I graduate.

As a big fan of Matt Groening's Life in Hell comic strip, I immediately went crazy for Red Meat, a new strip in the same sick and twisted vein. And now along comes this collection. Red Meat: From the Secret Files of Max Cannon presents a skewed take on a variety of institutions, from "normal" neighbors to an all-American dad straight out of "My Three Sons." Add to this a sadistic milkman and a bug-eyed, paranoid, conspiracy nut, and you've got yourself some side-splitting entertainment. Honestly, I laughed until I was in pain.

Blugeoning humor that beats your brains in!!!.......2006-05-20

I'm telling you Red Meat comics are the most sick, twisted, disgusting, and preverse cartoons you'll ever lay eyes on and that means naturally I think their great. I laughed so hard I thought I'd piss my pants. The poltically incorrect humor had me thinking "this is just F'ing wrong" while I had to catch my breath. Its so different from anything out there and the comic humor isn't "Beetle Bailey or Peanuts" type humor to put you to sleep. This humor doesn't tap you on the shoulder it bludgeons your head till your brains spill out. Get this piece of garbage it is gold and you'll be a better person because laughing is what makes you that way.

This is laugh out loud hilarious if you have this kind of humor. Then you show it to some people and they are like "ok... yeah I guess thats your kind of humor" Well if your the type of person to enjoy newspaper comics, this will actually be funny so that is a hard transition to make. The genius is of it is that I could have written this stuff (and the 'drawings') but I didn't and He did and now he's probably making millions and millions of dollars. I remember making comic strips like while sitting in class. I would crack myself up back then too.

Like Gary Larson and Tom Tomorrow, people either "get" Max Cannon or they don't. If you "get" him, this collection is invaluable. If not, maybe there's a Mallard Filmore collection out there somewhere. The Family Circus is always good, too. For an anti-Family Circus, non-politically correct good time, Red Meat is a great read. Is it political? Everything's political. This is just a little something from the smartass anarchist lobby. :)

I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.

Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.

What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.

If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...

Knowledgeably written by Jeanine Basinger (Corwin-Fuller Professor of Film Studies, Wesleyan University), The World War II Combat Film: Anatomy Of A Genre is a close and detailed study of an entire class of movies (over 1,000 films in total), pertaining to World War II. Originally published in 1986, The World War II Combat Film has now been completely updated and significantly expanded. Enhanced with a thorough filmography, The World War II Combat Film is especially recommended for military movie buffs and an invaluable addition to academic Cinematic Studies and Film History reference collections.

War as a Genre.......2003-07-16

This is a very good, readable book that not only traces the development of the WWII combat film, but also discusses how genres change over time.

Basinger takes the WWII combat film to see how genres work. She did this because, obviously, there were none made before December 7th 1941, so there are no "lost films" in this genre. Thus she sees how genre elements come together gradually (the prototype phase), snap into place as a perfect model (the archetype), are used by skillful directors for powerful films that transcend the norm (masterpiece) and then lose their effectiveness and are inverted or combined with other genres to try to attract an audience (decadence.)

She looks at combat films from the 1940s to the 1980s, so she doesn't talk about all films made in Hollywood in 1941-5. If a film doesn't have a lot of combat, she ignores it. However, she does discuss many films and besides showing how genres develop, she shows how the combat film changed. The focus on a platoon of average Joes (Guadacanal Diary) eventually gives way to a focus on an elite force (Where Eagles Dare, for instance).

A very informative and thought producing book, perhaps the best by Basinger.

The Saint-Simonians, whose movement flourished in France between 1825 and 1835, are widely recognized for their contributions to history and social thought. Until now, however, no full account has been made of the central role of the arts in their program. In this skillful interdisciplinary study, Ralph P. Locke describes and documents the Saint-Simonians' view of music as an ideological tool and the influence of this view on musical figures of the day.

The disciples of Claude Henri de Rouvroy, comte de Saint-Simon, believed that increased industrial production would play a crucial role in improving the condition of the working masses and in shifting power from the aristocratic "drones" to the enterprising men of talent then rising in the French middle class. As a powerful means of winning support for their views, music became an integral part of the Saint-Simonians' writings and ceremonial activities.

Among the musicians Locke discusses are Berlioz, Liszt, and Mendelssohn, whose tangential association with the Saint-Simonians reveals new aspects of their social and aesthetic views. Other musicians became the Saint-Simonians' faithful followers, among them Jules Vinçard, Dominique Tajan-Rogé, and particularly Félicien David, the movement's principal composer. Max Hardy's book is considered, by most bridge teachers and experts, to be the bible for the 2/1 game force bidding method. It comprehensively covers every aspect of an entire bidding system encompassing 2/1 GF, 1NT forcing and all of the supporting conventions necessary to make up a bidding system to address all hand possibilities. Quite frankly, it isn't easy to read, because each paragraph contains a nugget of knowledge which must be carefully digested by the reader. But, it's a must read for anyone who wants to keep up to date on the most exciting innovations in bridge bidding over the last decade. After having read through the entire book twice, I keep my copy at my bedside, and fall asleep reading a randomly selected section. Each time, I discover another nuance which enhances my bridge bidding repertoire.

Being unsatisfied with my level of understanding of the two over one bidding system (after a friend taught the basics to me), I read this book, which everyone told me was the authority on the subject. I found in this book a fairly complete description of a system a level or two more sophisticated than what I had previously played. Max Hardy tries to convey a great deal of information to the reader, so the text is somewhat dense and must be read slowly and carefully. Furtheremore, despite its length, the book doesn't always cover certain situations in as much depth as I would like. On a possibly related note, Max Hardy assumes that the reader has a good knowledge of standard bidding. Hence, my earlier disappointment at the lack of depth in some cases may reflect more my own lack of knowledge than any deficiency on Max Hardy's part (this is the first book I have read describing an entire bidding system).

In short, if you're interested in learning two over one, you really should read this book. Eventually. If you're a fairly inexperienced player, first finish learning standard bidding and then be prepared for a slow but informative read.

Critique of 2/1gf by Max Hardy.......2001-07-31

No question, Max sure knows his 2/1gf system...wish I could say the same for me after wading through it...I'm sure if you wanted to spend many hours sifting his text, you'd be a super 2/1 player, but in my estimation, the book needs two things: a better format, and example bids with each paragraph...I know that would lengthen book, but you have to IMAGINE the bidding from each little paragraph to get the sense of what he's saying. From his book, I conclude that 2/1 is too complex for me...too much memory work involved. Too bad, many people in Zone Bridge Club on the internet think highly of the system. Of course, I'm no expert...which is why I selected Max's book...to become one.

I believe I am a fair bridge player. Wished to learn a more advanced system than 5 card majors, which I currently play. English is not my mother language but am used to it as I work in an international environment. Found the book content well structured and written but concise. It takes too much effort and concentration to go thru the descriptions of the biddings. It lacks templates and tables that would facilitate the visual memorization of the steps. E.G: most of the hand points required by a bidding are represented in letters rather than in numbers. So are the suits declared during the auction rather than using symbols. Would recommend a new edition with more tables and less words which shall not necessarily imply... less pages and therefore lower price!

This book is all about discipline in trading. Great reference book, and I think it should be taught in courses as well. After I read this book, I reviewed all the losses I made in the stock markets over the last 14 years of trading, and found out that most of them simply was due to the lack of discipline !
The book is written in a great language, where I believe the writer fought hard to choose every single word.
A must have for everyone who trades, intend to trade, or even experienced trader.
