All viewers will see of this picture book is cheesecake. There are so many naked women that I lost count. Most are in tempting positions, but a few aren't. Interesting book, but not worth the price nor the time it took to ship it.

Book Description

The Ultimate Coffee-table Book on the World's Most Famous Souvenir: the Hawaiian Shirt

The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands is the most colorful and complete book published on the most enduring souvenir ever invented: the Hawaiian shirt.

First developed in the early `30s as a "tourist attraction," Aloha shirts have their roots in the graphic, comfortable clothing that South Seas islanders have been wearing for hundreds of years.

Around 1935, a small-but-daring group of clothing manufacturers in Honolulu hit on the same good idea simultaneously: to make wildly colorful, "air-conditioned" short-sleeved shirts for tourists that would give them an immediate sense of relaxation, and going "Hawaiian." The shirts were also, as one clever Waikiki marketer observed, "Postcards you can wear."

So it has been for more than sixty years, with countless Hawaiian- and Japanese-print shirts designed and sold for the pleasure of millions of people.

The Aloha Shirt traces the splashy history of Hawaiian shirts from their beginnings right after the Great Depression through their popularity with World War II American servicem SecC and into the "Golden Era" of Hawaiian tourism and garment manufacturing—from 1935 to 1955.

As the book points out, Aloha shirts have been the favorite leisure wear of everyone from twenty-something surfers to presidents such as Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Elvis Presley chose Aloha shirts as the main costume for his movie, Blue Hawaii.

Today, Aloha shirts are more popular than ever. From California to Tokyo, hundreds of manufacturers are turning out modern-day shirts costing from $15 to more than $100. It's a half-billion-dollar-a-year industry. And shirt collectors at New York auction houses and on eBay on it's Web site now pay thousands of dollars for a single rayon "silkie" that cost less than a dollar in 1935.

Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of full color, never-before-published shirt images, vintage black-and-white photographs, and priceless examples of period "Hawaiiana," the book features separate chapters on the innovative artists, risk-taking manufacturers, and silky fabrics behind the success of the world's most famous shirt.

The Aloha Shirt is both a dazzling, fun-to-browse art book, and a fascinating chronicle of the world's love affair with Hawaii.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but where's the index? .......2005-12-06

I loved this book, it is helpful to my collecting and my selling. It has wonderful pictures, and I love the section on '60's makers and just the way it is arranged in general is helpful and makes for fascinating reading. The only thing I would like to see with this book is a name index; this would make it so much more helpful as a reference. I do highly recommend it though, as a reference or just as a coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars The Book that Changed my Life........2005-03-13

Wow, what a book!! Having been previously lightly infected by the `Aloha Shirt' bug, after having read this beautiful book, I became incurably and terminally struck down. Profusely illustrated from the collections of many well-known and extremely lucky collectors, this book has become my bedside bible. The research is also first-class, following the development of the Aloha shirt from a fun thing, to a full-blown industry. I now live and breath THE shirt. Buy this book and like me, change your life.

5 out of 5 stars If everyone wore aloha shirts, there'd be no war..........2001-03-06

If Hawaii or the aloha shirt has ever gladdened your heart, you'll want to own THE ALOHA SHIRT. Dale Hope conveys the TRUE SPIRIT (colorful, soft, peaceful, flowing) of the Hawaiian Islands by presenting both the fascinating history of the aloha shirt and 500 or so beautiful illustrations. These illustrations are so varied and exquisite that you'll get high just by perusing them. They also help you see how the aloha shirt can be an art form in and of itself. Hopefully, this book will inspire people to wear their aloha shirts more often -- not just when they visit Hawaii -- and to buy the new ones that are being created by the best artist designers.

5 out of 5 stars Profusely and beautiful illustrated.......2001-02-13

Dale Hope grew up in the Hawaiian garment industry, taking over his father's clothing business at the age of 26. As the art director of Kahala Sportswear, Hope oversees the creation and manufacturing of 150 new Aloha shirt designs annual. In The Aloha Shirt: Spirit Of The Islands, Hope collaborates with writer Gregory Tozian to offer a magnificent, coffee-table artbook dedicated to the history of the unique and famous Hawaiian shirt style. This impressive treatise covers the history of Hawaiian clothing, the evolution of the tailor shop into the modern clothing factories, the designers, textiles, printmakers, and retailers that made the Hawaiian "aloha shirt" famous around the world. There are chapters focusing on Duke Kahanamoku, celebrities, shirt makers of the 60s, labels and buttons, and aloha shirt collectors. Profusely and beautiful illustrated, the text is informative, at times fascinating, and highly recommended for students of American clothing history and fads in general, and Hawaii's contributions to the garment industry and American popular culture in particular.

5 out of 5 stars The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands.......2000-11-30

The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands is unique, as a historical and artistic book documenting the Aloha shirt, from its historic beginnings as a cottage industry, to the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. This definitive text has been extensively researched, with textile artists, designers, garment manufacturers and their families and friends all contributing to the consistency of the history as researched by Dale Hope. An educational and artistic book bringing over 500 aloha shirts with their Hawaiian inspired origins paralleled with the history and times of Hawaii. For those who have memories of Hawaii, and for those who share their memories to others, this elegant coffee table book is a "must have" for all!

Book Description

Last year was a big story year. The greatest natural disaster in U.S. History, Hurricane Katrina, tore up the Gulf Coast, then Hurricane Rita hit the Texas/Louisiana border. John Roberts became our Supreme Court chief justice and first Harriet Miers and then Samuel Alito were nominated to replace retiring justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The Iraq war continued, and two terrorist attacks in London reminded us all to be vigilant.

President Bush's approval ratings reached an all-time low, and the deaths of Pope John Paul II, Judge William Rehnquist, and Terry Schiavo all had surprising ripple effects. "Deep Throat" was revealed, as was the use of steroids among professional baseball players. Israel withdrew from Gaza, and Syria withdrew from Lebanon.

All in all it was an exciting year for cartoonists and more than 150 are represented here in this 33rd annual edition, including work from Pulitzer Prize-winning artists, the year's major award-winning cartoons, and the best work from Canadian cartoonists.

I love editorial cartoons and love Brooks' collection. It is aklways a treat to review the year this way. I could not give his collection a bad rating and admit to being biased in that way.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT AND ON TARGET!.......2006-09-10

The cover of the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year, 2006 edition just about says it all as a blimp is pictured with the words "Bad Year" as its message. No one can disagree there as 2005 began with the aftermath of the Tsunami on the other side of the world, and continued the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, the failing economy, and various political scandals. Not a year to be remembered. These truly are the best political cartoons leading off with Pulitzer and other prize winners and covering a variety of subjects such as those various natural disasters, terrorism, congress, the economy, sports, foreign affairs, and more, from some of the leading newspapers in the nation.

As one would expect, President Bush is the target for many of the cartoons, lampooning his handling of Iraq, Katrina, the nomination to the Supreme Court, the economy, and, well...just about everything else. Several cartoons take Bush to task for his seemingly uncanny ability to be on vacation whenever a disaster strikes.

Two great cartoons take opposite sides and use the name of the fallen soldiers in Iraq as their ammunition. One, from Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, uses the names to spell out in big letters, "WHY?" On the other end of the spectrum is Bob Englehart of the Hartford Courant whose cartoons show a version of the Constitution which reads, "We the people of Iraq should get down on our knees and thank..." with the list of names following. Both are well done.

The topic of racism is dealt with frequently, particularly in regards to Katrina and there are several humorous, yet sadly tragic cartoons that deal with last August's hurricane. Other subjects that get deservedly skewered are Michael Jackson, oil companies and their gross (as in disgusting) profits, and the Bird Flu. The bulk of the sports cartoons cover the ongoing steroid scandal in baseball.

It's a brilliant collection from beginning to end with cutting edge cartooning and biting political statements. A real gem!

2 out of 5 stars Muddy Subheads Mar Readability.......2007-06-29

You're better off using the index in this book than browsing it. The subheads are supposed to be cute but they are not helpful. It would have been better to list the name of the place, nearest town, and hours if applicable than to give it some unclever title. You have to read through the information to find what exactly the curiosity is. It's annoying and detracts from interesting information provided. Off the Beaten Path: Missouri by Patti DeLano is less quirky (although it has some oddities listed) but covers more travel information and is easier to read.

    5 out of 5 stars Quirky Must-Have.......2005-08-15

This is an excellent book for those living in or passing through Missouri. Funny, informative, entertaining, and well-organized, the author takes us through the entire state of oddities and other sundry things, in a state where the natives are both charming and self-effacing. This book deserves two thumbs up for sure!

5 out of 5 stars Show me more!.......2003-01-09

This is a great read: not only does it give practical advice for the MO tourist wishing to stray from the beaten path, it's also a great read for anyone interested in reading a bunch of darn good stories. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A fun armchair traveller read - or a cool trip planner.......2002-12-30

My wife and I had a lot of fun reading this book - the author has a real appreciation of people of all stripes, and a good sense of humor. We visited a lot of weird and wonderful places in Arkansas a few years ago, but now it's obvious that Missouri has even more wackiness to offer.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful guide to its subject .......2005-01-14

Alun Evans provides a short ( one page ) introduction to this book and I strongly urge purchasers and users of the book to read this section , for it outlines the criteria used in classifying a title as a War Movie .They are movies which portray battles ,great and small ; movies which show the effects of war and its psychology and the way war impacts on societies and people .There are Westerns included in this categorisation -and so you will find the great cavalry trilogy by John Ford included .There are espionage titles cheek by jowl with romantic melodramas like Gone With the Wind ,fantasy titles are accommodated as are musicals and comedy .
The bulk of the guide is an A-Z listing of selected titles ,some 2000 in all .The entry layout is standard throughout - The title is given followed by director , country of origin and year of release .There is then a short capsule review varying in length from one line to up to 4 paragraphs ,culminating in a list of the major performers . A star system is included ranging from zero to five stars .In some instances the review will have a list of other movies on similar themes ,as for example The Alamo(1960 ) which then gives titles like Lone Star and The Last Command 'although not the Jim Bowie biopic The Iron Mistress
The last section of the book is a listing of movies by historical period ranging from pre classical antiquity to Desert Storm ;and there is also a listing of key directors and their war related output .The book is well but not lavishly illustrated throughout .

It is a useful guide if you want to know what movies have been made about particular wars and war theatres .The reviews are not massively detailed but serve as some guide to their subject matter and quality -although the latter is a value judgement .,like all reviews

The bibliography is useful in steering interested readers towards other -more specialist guide but this is a good introduction to a wide ranging subject .I read the 2000 edition -and obviously movies released since then are not included

    5 out of 5 stars informative and well-organized -- a fun book.......2003-02-25

This is a very thorough guide book on its topic. Often such books are written by historians who, while they may enjoy films, don't have the background in film that this author has. The author may tend to overvalue some of the films in his five-star rating systems (if he errs it's as a softy, not as a curmudgeon). Very good cross-referencing and indexing. More and better stills than you might expect for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Highly recommended.......2002-03-03

Hats off to Alun Evans for this superb guide to this film genre. I've got quite a few other books on this subject, but I always refer to this one. This guy must have sat through thousands of these films, and his perspectives are usually consistent. Once you learn his preferences, its easy to understand what things you might want to watch based on your preferences. He discusses historical significance and accuracy, when the film was made, who it was made by, who was in it, in such a way that it gives you more of an understanding of the entire war film phenomenon. Great insight.

There is much more coverage of films from Europe and other parts of the world, than a sharp focus on films of the US. THis is particularly appreciated for WW2 films (which most seem to be anyway), since to tell the whole story of a war, all the constituents voices can be heard.

The format is that of almost an encyclopedia/reference. Some films have 2 words, some have 2 paragraphs. He tells us things about certain filmakers that give great context to the period in history in which they worked. He has fun opinions about all sorts of things (the man clearly has a problem with Lew Landers) and has a light and informative style.

I've got a fairly sizable war film collection, and this book has contributed greatly to my ability to grow it. All films that he could find are covered in some way or another. Must be close to 1000 or so. Very comprehensive and valuable guide to the collector

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Gamble.......2007-05-30

I thought, when I began reading Michael Konik's books, that I would discover gambling stories: descriptions of cons, cheats, old and new games, great losses and winnings, and wily stratagems between the house and the man with a fake beard and a card counter in his boot. And all such stories are certainly there in clear and compelling form. But what I've come to find in book after book is that Konik is, at heart, a biographer. He's more interested in the man holding the hole card than the hole card itself. He wants to know why his subject is sitting at a green table rather than lecturing at a blackboard or curing pancreatic cancer. And although he presents these subjects with respect and even reverence, he presents them in the round, with beauty marks and warts, perfume and halitosis. They step from his pages alive and breathing. Surely, some of them distribute copies of his books inscribed with their own autographs, so proud they are of the portrait. Konik makes the mute sing and the paralytic dance, and his subjects must, as his editors must, love it.

Beyond all that, Konik presents himself as a flawed human being, as indeed we all are, however loathe we are to admit it. He imparts a great truth: "Lie in poker, but not in love." And he explains the penalties of ignoring such an admonition, as he experienced them personally. If this doesn't sound like any book you've ever read about gambling, be assured it certainly is not. Yes, it is about the rules of hold `em and the bizarre casinos of Macau, China, but it is also about life itself as the greatest gamble, and the odds of traversing it with soul intact.

2 out of 5 stars Boring and usless.......2007-04-09

Sorry to say, but this book was a major dissapointment. The author tries to be too cute with his writing style. He uses all kinds of big words like 'quarom', quixotically', 'effete', 'de rigueur', etc. If I want a vocabulary lesson I'll buy a dictionary.
But worst of all, he gives so much usless information. One chapter guides you on setting up your own home poker game. (do I need help doing that?) He gives advice on how much to play for: "play for an amount that quickens your breath, but doesn't leave you breahless". No kidding! What useless info. Much of the book is like that. Big thumbs down for this book.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Writer.......2006-07-14

Been seeing Mr. Konik on TV for some time now commentating on the poker shows and was curious if his poker books are as knowlegdeable as he sounds when he's talking on TV. Well, to be blunt I'm not sure he's as much of an expert about the game as some of the other players out there with books and dvds etc. Meaning he never won any major tournaments that I can tell and I don't know if he has any great insight that you couldn't find in the average instructional book -- but there's a big difference in "Telling Lies and Getting Paid." Mr. Konik is a truly great writer, I would say the best by a long mile over anybody else trying to write about poker. I enjoyed his "Man With $100,000..." very much so I wasn't completely surprised by this sequel. The writing is even better I think.

Mr. Konik has a way of making you feel like you're right there in the middle of the action and you're feeling the emotions the author is experiencing. I was very moved by his account of playing in the World Series of Poker with a broken heart, which is something I don't reccommend doing! This book is not always easy to read. It's very honest and sometimes very moving. Sometimes it's funny. All the time it is a book to read over like you put on a favorite record. If you want truly great writing about gambling, this is the book.

      5 out of 5 stars Strong Stuff.......2006-06-30

No you won't learn how to play a small pair in early position from this book. This is all about the psychology and emotions of gambling. Konik is probably the best writer of all the gambling pundits when it comes to telling it like it is warts and all. A very honest book. You gotta feel for the guy even if he seems to get more women than the average poker player. He knows he's not that great of a player. He belongs on T.V. talking about the game not playing it.

The shorter stories about sports and blackjack are highly educational and amusing. Good chapter about "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

This is the kind of book you can dip into a few chapters at a time in between watching Konik on T.V. acting like he knows what he's talking about. Mr. Konik, stick to writing. You're the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Ever Read.......2006-06-16

I was interested in this book after seeing the author on numerous television shows about gambling. Michael Konik has always been one of my favorite commentators about poker. He brings articulateness and humor to the game. I found these qualities in his writing. Some of his writing is laugh outloud funny and some of it is quite serious. He is more eloquent in print than he is on TV. "Telling Lies" is an incredible piece of writing. It's brutally honest almost painfully honest. I felt for the guy showing so much vulnerability. What's really great about this book is that it's about gambling and poker but it can be enjoyed by readers who don't have a lot of interest in those subjects. That's how good the writing is. A classic.

I'm speechless. I read the one about the Binion's murders and playing in the world championship of poker and I thought that it was an extremely sophisticated look at the world of gambling. Then I read Konik's take on playing in the World Championship of cards and I'm speechless. I don't know if I want to cry or laugh or just read it all over again. If you play cards you need to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Written About Gambling.......2003-06-12

My only complaint is that it WON'T teach you how to win the World Series of Poker since I'm not giving away anything to say that the author doesn't win the Big One which he writes about. Besides from that, this is the gambling book that all other gambling books have to test themselves against. What a writer! Also enjoyed his MAN WITH $100,000 BREASTS which is the second best gambling stories book.

World Series of Poker time again. Plenty of strategy books out there. Only one about what's inside the heart and head of top players. I reread Konik's masterpiece the night before the last tournament I played. Won it. This is the book I'm going to be reading night before the Big One. Mr. Konik I salute you.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-01-29

Every once in while a writer such as Michael Konik elevates Poker to artistic and emotional heights reserved for exceptional feats of art AND science. Spanier, Alvarez and Holden are other names of such conjurors who come to mind.

Like Sir Holden, Mr. Konik also is cursed with the helpless realization that inconsequential to his passion, and Matrix-like aptitude for Poker, he too shall never ascend to "physiological ascendancy" long enough to seize the Bracelet - not yet at least. Fortunately for us, his reluctant affinity to his "day job" will provide us the memorable glimpses into an intellect, a game, and a perspective that would otherwise remain cloaked by the trite interpretations of the Discovery/Learning/Travel channels, and kept regretfully shrouded in obscurity.

Michael does a superb job in this book about varied and unique gambling experiences which culminate into the grandest story of all:
His own WSOP heroics (or lack thereof), interwoven with the raw trials of his inner-demons (or goddesses in his case).

This latter and final segment of the book is a brilliant piece of writing that transforms Poker, with all its nuances, humility, "brute" refinement and fragility into Magic. Just when you think Poker can evoke only images of banal-minded, leather-"butts" that haven't washed their hands since three infections ago, nor read anything that didn't include a chapter or blurb on "check-raising UTG", Michael Konik uses eloquent references to Gericault, Milton and Goethe (naming but a few), shedding revealing insight into his own 'raison d'être', all the while exalting the virtues of a truly remarkable game.

This is definitely a must-read/must-own book appealing to readers of both intellectual and poker-aficionado qualities (especially for those gifted with the philosophical capacitates to appreciate the a posteriori relationship between "tabula rasa" and sizing up the guy in seat#2).

If you read this book just for the stories outside the Poker world, you'd still be doing yourself a huge favour, and by accident discover the best account of pocket 3's I think I've ever come across. ...

      5 out of 5 stars Required Reading.......2002-04-05

Getting ready to make my first entry into the World Series of Poker. Konik's book was highly recommended by a friend whose played in the Big one three times (made money two years ago)and he said it won't teach you how to win the tournament but it'll put into words everything people feel/think when they're involved in the ultimate poker compertition.

      Totally agree.

If you're gonna play in a poker tournament especially the Series, you should read "Telling Lies". Finally I found a book that captures what its all about. Also excellent stories about backgammon and blackjack.

Mr. Konik great job. I'm gonna want an autograph at the World Series. See ya at the final table!

      Book Description

More and more leaders and their organizations are becoming convinced in the business case for creating a "coaching culture". This book provides the tools for leaders and teams to develop a common language and shared protocol and a learning and development orientation towards people. These critical dynamics support the entire culture becoming a "feedback-rich, high-performance" organization.

For this to occur, a common coaching approach driven by coaching UP, DOWN, and SIDEWAYS is necessary. Coaching flows in all directions to managers, peers, and direct reports. Coaching becomes the normal "way we do things around here."

The premise of "The Heart of Coaching" was never more true. "As coaching becomes a predominant cultural practice...it will create a performance-focused, feedback-rich organization capable of creating and sustaining a competitive advantage."

This "Second Edition" makes the use of the enhanced coaching model easier to use than ever, since it now includes a colorized snapout reference card. Additionally, several powerful enhancements of the Transformational Coaching methodology make it one of the most comprehensive, and systematic approaches to coaching you will find today.

It guides leaders, managers, and entire teams who want to enhance or master their coaching skills through 2 critical aspects of coaching: 1. establishing authentic, healthy and respectful coaching relationships, and 2. organizing and conducting the actual coaching conversations that lead to commitments for positive results that both the coach and the coachee are willing to support.

This will become one of your go-to books re: the coaching process. I know it's one of mine! Incredible insights as well as lots of advice, tricks, tips, etc. A must buy for coaches, or those who aspire to become coaches.

2 out of 5 stars The Heart of Coaching: Using Transformational Coaching to Create a High-Performance Coaching Culture (3rd Edition).......2007-03-29

This book does have some good background information about coaching. It is pretty dry though. If you want to learn about coaching, take an accredited coaching certification program. I did, and this was one of our required reads. It happened to be my least favorite and gave me very little practical information to use during a coaching session. If you want to read an inspiring, empowering book, read Breaking the Rules by Kurt Wright.

5 out of 5 stars A sound and practical coaching method.......2005-09-28

Tom Crane goes to the true essence of coaching. He developed a comprehensive coaching method to transform knowledge into performance and action into results. A must read not only for coaches, but also for managers and leaders.

5 out of 5 stars Coaching for Results.......2005-05-20

This book gets to the "heart" of the matter - pun intended. "Coaching," according to author Thomas G. Crane, "is a healthy, positive, and enabling process that develops the capacity of people to solve today's business problems." Bingo! Crane focuses on what coaches can achieve focusing their coaching on three principles: building a foundation of trust, learning together, and forwarding the action (and the self) forward. This what Crane calls transformational coaching. Consider it to be the art and the practice of helping others learn about their strengths, their weaknesses, and their opportunities for development. Tightly written and with ample diagrams and charts, this book is a treasure chest of ideas of executive coaches and an easy to follow guide for all managers who desire to coach for results. Don't simply read "The Heart of Coaching," practice its principles and you will help those you coach grow and develop.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Skills.......2003-02-15

As a senior manager with a major international manufacturing entity, I am continually educating my superiors, peers and subordinates about the value of developing exceptional coaching skills. After extensive research, The Heart of Coaching was the written vehicle we chose to develop these skills within our organization.

The most important aspect of this work, that sets it apart from all others, is it's focus on changing yourself and your own behavior rather than changing others. It is written with a simplicity that creates immediate understanding of the most effective behaviors of leaders who combine "heart" with results.

The results in our organization have been astounding. Not just a change in the effectiveness of individuals, but a cultural evolution.
