5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-12-19

I was pleasantly surprised to pick up this book and be greeted with such clear, detailed, and beautiful photographs. The combination of clothing and art is carefully chosen and illustrates the written points perfectly. I show this book to everyne who comes over, and it has yet to be looked at for less than 30 minutes at a time!

      5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book.......2007-05-20

After reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, I had to learn more about foot binding and the slippers...wonderful book and the pictures are amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Haunting and Beautiful.......2006-09-06

Like most Westerners, I am both horrified and fascinated by the Chinese tradition of footbinding. I found this book to be an excellent source of images and history, and cultural context of this rite of passage for Chinese girls. I appreciated that this book is written in a neutral voice, allowing the reader to explore the many meanings of footbinding, rather than simply condemning it as an abhorrant practice.

5 out of 5 stars really lovely volume.......2006-03-14

A stunningly visual book, with wonderful pictures and lots of historical information. Enjoy!

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photography.......2006-03-01

This is just a gorgeous book. I bought it to use in a class that I taught on culture. It has great "shock" value in terms of educating students about the power of culture over physical circumstances and "voluntary" body alteration. I do have an appreciation for the craftsmanship of the tiny slippers as well.
      Lovely.

5 out of 5 stars All my questions about the custom of footbinding were answered........2005-11-30

Subtitled "A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition", this 1997 book measures 10" by 10" square. On the cover is a photograph of more than two dozen authentic shoes which were handmade for the tiny bound feet of Chinese women.

I've always been interested in learning more about this custom, and this book clearly explains every single thing I've ever wanted to know. The author is an American photojournalist whose travels often took her to China. Often, she would find some of these tiny shoes in a market and started collecting them. She also did a lot of historical research and interviewed many elderly Chinese women who still can remember the details of their childhood foot binding. Some of them even allowed her to photograph their bare misshapen feet.

Foot binding has been outlawed in China since the Communist revolution. Women born after this time grow up with normal feet. But before 1949, little girls had to endure a painful childhood. It must have been awful but people really believed that if this wasn't done, the young girl would have no chance of getting a husband. Indeed, this was true. Marriages were arranged and the future mother-in-law would insist on seeing a shoe that the girl had embroidered. If the shoe was very small, it would be understood that the girl could withstand pain. If the embroidery was good, it would prove that the girl was well disciplined. The men also wanted wives with bound feet. Not only did it reflect on the man's wealth and standing in the community but it was also an erotic turn-on.

They say that one picture is worth a thousand words, and this book certainly proves it. There are many pictures of the tiny shoes and of the women wearing them. I was impressed by the complexity of the workmanship and their startling beauty. But the most moving of all were the photos of the bare feet themselves. Looking at them gave me a sick and uncomfortable feeling.

I loved this book because it opened my mind to a culture that is very foreign to me. It made me understand exactly what these women's lives had been for more than ten centuries. Yes, I was saddened. But I was also enlightened. I learned something. And that made this book very worthwhile.

This is a beautiful book. I highly recommend it. But it is certainly not for the squeamish.

5 out of 5 stars Ennis does it again.......2007-01-04

More masterful writing by Garth Ennis. You really should read the ealier stories to be up on whats happening in this one, but Garth puts his signiture shine on it.

4 out of 5 stars Steve and Garth's touching farewell to Constantine........2005-11-30

Garth Ennis, John Constantine, Hellblazer: Rake at the Gates of Hell (Vertigo, 2003)

And finally, after all these years, the venerable team of Ennis and Dillon are done with their part in the ongoing saga of John Constantine. As such, it's to be expected that Rake at the Gates of Hell is a book for tying up loose ends, and so it does. Constantine has to face down Satan one more time and, more fearsomely, meets up with Kit again. Meanwhile, a depressed suburb in London, in which Constantine has no end of acquaintances, is on the verge of an all-out race riot between the inhabitants and the police. The book also contains a bonus story, "Heartland," about Kit's post-fleeing-to-Belfast adventures.

It's Ennis and Dillon, so you know it's going to be good. It answers lots of small, nagging questions. It's full of the mental gymnastics Constantine has to go through to rationalize his behavior. What more could you want? *** ½

4 out of 5 stars An Great End, but...........2004-06-17

I read it, I love it. Ennis couldnt finish his plot in other way but that, we have to see that since Dangerous Habits everything started to become an huge snow ball... Its more then a fair ending, its a perfect ending. So, why I didnt rated 5 stars? Because I think it was an fast ending, Ennis give us the impression that he is trying to finish the history in a tight schedule, or that he doesnt want to prolong too much, leaving too short the ending. Besides the killing of almost everything that he created in Hellblazer universe (leaving almost a blank restart for the next writer) in a surprisely short time (few editions...), the history is amazing .Maybe the fact that the history is so short is that made of it such an great one.

A terrific guide through the process of influence in the musical arts! This book focuses on the ways in which post-Romanticists escaped the grasp of the preceding musical eras while still remaining (or choosing to remain) trapped under their shadow. The book is worth the first two chapters alone.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of fun and definitely worth it!.......2006-07-06

This book is a lot of fun to read and pays for itself after a few games of poker. I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the game and have fun doing it.

3 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy the kit........2006-07-03

Although this book may be satisfactory, do NOT buy the poker set, which includes a summed-up version of this book, along with four shot glasses, four stir sticks, coasters, and a pack of cards. It is absolutely not worth your time or money. It cost forty dollars Canadian, and the book is information you can simply find for free online. I'm working on getting a refund right now.

3 out of 5 stars Cover basics, not much else.......2005-10-20

I'd recommend this book for women who are beginners to poker or who intend to play just for kicks in a fun, home game. If one is looking for more advanced poker strategy, there are better books to turn to. The best part of the book is the chapter on poker lingo. Knowing the language is an important part of table image and Bochan covers all the necessary terms well so an attentive reader will not look like a novice. If only she had delved further into poker strategy- some illustrated examples would have helped.

2 out of 5 stars Play poker with unicorns in your Barbie Dream House!.......2005-09-25

I'm very glad I purchased this book with a gift certificate. I'd be quite annoyed had I used my own money. There are a few useful chapters in the book (none of which includes anything that couldn't be found online -- for free), but they are completely overshadowed by chapters with names such as "Playing the Dumb Blond: Using Being Female to Your Advantage," "Lucky at Cards, Lucky at Love: Meeting Men Through Poker," and "Queen of Hearts: Improved Relationships Through Poker."

Bochan tries; I give her that. She, however, spends too much time painfully attempting to compare poker playing with "feminine" things that "badass girls" can relate to (I do hope that was her editor's idea, not her own.). Examples: 1. When explaining a round of betting: "One way to indicate that you're checking is to tap your fingers on the table. So there's a perfectly good reason why you need to paint those pretty nails before the game. You don't want something as superficial as chipped polish to chip away at your confidence." 2. On poker etiquette: "Just as you wouldn't dare to show up at a dinner party without a nice bottle of wine or flowers, you shouldn't sit down at a poker table without mastering the basic etiquette." 3. On following the rules: "[Following the rules] keeps the game running smoothly as your fresh-shaven legs and lets everyone concentrate on the action at hand."

Let's not forget the entire chapter dedicated to setting up a girls' poker night. A fun way to add "femme flair" to the night, according to Bochan, is to "[p]ass around a tiara instead of a dealer button to show who's dealing." Wait... I've a better idea. Why not invest in a red dealer button and call it a "period"? "Look!" you and the rest of the girls could exclaim (in between giggles) when it's Tiffani's turn to deal. "Tiffani's got her period!"

If I were interviewing Donald Trump about business strategies, I wouldn't ask him how he felt when he made a huge business deal on Ivanka's first day of preschool. Nor would I ask him if he'd ever thought about not wearing pink ties in the board room on "The Apprentice." I'd ask him about, well, his business strategies. In the chapter entitled "Chicks with Chips: Tips, Tricks, and Girl Talk with Two Pros," Bochan interviews two female professional poker players. Here are two questions Bochan asks Annie Duke, one of only three women who "won the coveted gold bracelets at open events at the World Series of Poker" in 2004: "[Y]ou were almost full-term with Lucy during the 2000 World Series of Poker, where you finished tenth -- can you talk a little about how it was to play?" and "[D]o you ever consider dressing more sexy or differently to use that to your advantage?"

The two hours I spent with this book weren't all for naught, however. Bochan does spend four pages on Texas Hold `Em Strategy which have proved quite helpful to me. If you're looking for books on actual poker strategy, I suggest you go with the classics. Bochan's acknowledgments page says it all: "I hope I never again have to write a book in as short a time as I wrote this one[.]"

3 out of 5 stars Humorous, but content-lite.......2005-07-26

It's not that I'm not a badass, or that I don't "get" it. It's that this book on poker was about 2 chapters of actual content, most of which was bare-bones mechanics of playing, and not that useful to actually calculating odds and winning the game. The rest was about how to attract a man at the poker table, how to dress for poker, basically, how to play into every tired stereotype of "a badass girl." When I read the gratuitous lists of suggested movies and songs, I knew I was reading a book in which the author had really been stretching to find something to say. Ms. Bochan: Doyle Brunsen can go on for a thousand pages about poker. If you have to come up with unimaginative song lists and interviews (interesting, but not especially helpful to learning how to "beat the boys"), you're not quite ready to write a book.

In this autobiography, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson says one of his prime business criteria is "fun." Fun made Branson a billionaire, and few business memoirs are one-billionth as fun as Branson's, nor as niftily written. Not only does it relate his side of near-death corporate experiences, it tells how the chairman literally cheated death by gun, shipwreck, and balloon crash.

Branson's empire--now encompassing interests in an airline, pop music, soda pop, e-commerce, and financial services--began when the dyslexic 16-year-old dropped out of school in 1968 to found the British magazine Student. His headmaster said, "I predict that you will either go to prison or become a millionaire." Briefly imprisoned for dodging customs selling records, Branson got his first million by releasing Tubular Bells, a maverick recording all the stuffy executives rejected. (1998's Tubular Bells III puts the series' sales over 20 million.)

Despite wild tales of Branson's wife-swapping and Keith Richards fleeing naked from Branson's studio at gunpoint with another man's woman, the most shocking parts of the memoir concern British Airways' James Bond-like "dirty tricks" campaign against Virgin Atlantic, resulting in the biggest award for damages in English history.

Though it's filled with famous names, witty quotes, and pulse-pounding accounts of lunatic balloon adventures, it is as a business thriller that the book really scores. His instinctive bet-the-ranch tactics could cost him all, or earn another billion. Either way, Branson will likely remain the most entertaining entrepreneur in Europe. --Tim Appelo

            Book Description

"Oh, screw it, let's do it."

That's the philosophy that has allowed Richard Branson, in slightly more than twenty-five years, to spawn so many successful ventures. From the airline business (Virgin Atlantic Airways), to music (Virgin Records and V2), to cola (Virgin Cola), to retail (Virgin Megastores), and nearly a hundred others, ranging from financial services to bridal wear, Branson has a track record second to none.

Losing My Virginity is the unusual, frequently outrageous autobiography of one of the great business geniuses of our time. When Richard Branson started his first business, he and his friends decided that "since we're complete virgins at business, let's call it just that: Virgin." Since then, Branson has written his own "rules" for success, creating a group of companies with a global presence, but no central headquarters, no management hierarchy, and minimal bureaucracy.

Many of Richard Branson's companies--airlines, retailing, and cola are good examples--were started in the face of entrenched competition. The experts said, "Don't do it." But Branson found golden opportunities in markets in which customers have been ripped off or underserved, where confusion reigns, and the competition is complacent.
And in this stressed-out, overworked age, Richard Branson gives us a new model: a dynamic, hardworking, successful entrepreneur who lives life to the fullest. Family, friends, fun, and adventure are equally important as business in Branson's life. Losing My Virginity is a portrait of a productive, sane, balanced life, filled with rich and colorful stories:

Crash-landing his hot-air balloon in the Algerian desert, yet remaining determined to have another go at being the first to circle the globe

Signing the Sex Pistols, Janet Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Boy George, and Phil Collins

Fighting back when British Airways took on Virgin Atlantic and successfully suing this pillar of the British business establishment

Swimming two miles to safety during a violent storm off the coast of Mexico

Selling Virgin Records to save Virgin Atlantic

Staging a rescue flight into Baghdad before the start of the Gulf War . . .

And much more. Losing My Virginity is the ultimate tale of personal and business survival from a man who combines the business prowess of Bill Gates and the promotional instincts of P. T. Barnum.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-10-01

I have read this book three times. Branson does business the way we should all aspire to do business. He has built businesses that he is passionate about. He enjoys his life and has been exceptionally successful. I find it to be an inspiring and enjoyable read. Probably why I have returned to it multiple times.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've read!.......2007-09-24

This is probably the best book I've ever read so far. Its not a business book, so read it as you would "literature" over a weekend... but its filled with great entertaining stories and helps you see how this guy's life has been. And you definitely learn some lessons.

If you are an entrepreneur, you MUST read Losing my Virginity!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read. Buy it!.......2007-09-14

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

I'm not big on reading autobiographies, but this one I really enjoyed, couldn't put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Good Book, Easy Read.......2007-08-13

Very enjoyable read. He does not give you any great business insight, but it is an uplifting and encouraging story.

5 out of 5 stars Amusing, Inspiring, Educational and Brilliant!.......2007-07-25

This is a sensational book. Most autobiographies are boring and so full of only positive stuff about the person that you just know you are not getting the full picture. In this book Branson openly admits mistakes and bad business decisions. He gives credit to others acknowledging Virgin's success would not have happened without them. He also included instances when he has been brought back down to earth for example when two tourists asked for a picture he thought that he was being nice and started posing for them until he saw their confused faces and realised they wanted him to take a picture of them.

This book tells the reader everything about the Virgin empire from the first issue of Student magazine in 1968 to approval for their trains thirty years later in 1998. Obviously a lot more has happened since 98 such as Virginblue in Australia but we will have to wait for the sequel for that. This is a brilliant book which is as enjoyable as the great financial fictional thrillers like Harry Bingham's classic the Money Makers. This is so mush more inspiring when you realise Branson is not a fictional character and these achievements are real. This book will inspire you to get out there and make money. Buy it!

Note - There is an updated version of this book to be released soon which will have the post 98 stuff in it.
