Book Description
Daido Moriyama, who was born near Osaka in 1938, is one of the most influential representatives of contemporary Japanese photography. His unmistakable style, influenced by the work of Weegee, William Klein and Andy Warhol, has been evolving since the 1970s. His images, often made with a small, hand-held camera, draw viewers in with their diffuse, suggestive layers of gray. Moriyama is aptly characterized as a "hunter of light," and his preference for the atmospheric and enigmatic leads to beautiful abstractions of the Japanese urban landscapes. Shinjuku 19XX-20XX features previously unpublished photographs taken in the Tokyo district of Shinjuku, whose labyrinthine streets and dark eddies have always drawn Moriyama in. He says of the district, "Even though it wasn't a town that I liked because I wanted to like it, or became obsessed with because I wanted to be obsessed with it, the town of Shinjuku has a strange narcotic effect, and there is something about it that traps me and puts me under a spell."

THE BEST LITTLE BOOT BOOK IN THE WORLD.......2005-06-08
Tyler Beard and Jim Arndt's third book in their trilogy on the subject of cowboy boots is a mini-masterpiece. Although I think you have to own all three books to get the complete picture on the history of the cowboy boot, the 300+ pairs in this little book alone will satisfy any and all cowboy & cowgirl boot dreams. See it to believe it. Wow. I was happy to find that Tyler now has his own website at tylerbeard.com where I was able to buy a first edition. But you can't beat Amazon for prices on current editions. For all you boot scooters out there like me, check out this boot website: www.dimlights.com Inside boot gossip...I read in a newspaper interview that Tyler Beard thinks the best cowboy boot store in the world is Back at The Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Better to stick with Tyler Beard.......2004-11-25
Whether you are a boot fan or just curious this is one book to avoid. The book shows little imagination nor depth of research. Once you've turned a few pages in the book you've seen them all.
Tyler Beard has done three books on boots and each one shows an effort to get out and find the unusual and best examples of boot making. I would advise David R. Stoecklein to do the same.

x23 is good, nyx bad!.......2007-09-18
the x23 origin story was very well done. on a few of her early missions she plays up to the 'cute little girl' decoy while ensuing to kill everyone in sight! hehe. good story, good artwork, and alot of action! well done!
the nyx storyline, however, sucked. flat out sucked. it sucked so bad, this will be the last line of my review for it!
Normally I would write a longer review..........2007-01-04
But in this case I doubt it neccessary. The X-23 character is, in my opinion, one of the better creations of Marvel to date. Her start on the Saturday morning cartoon X-men Evolution was unlikely but to then be continued into the comics is serindipity. And now the two largest and most focused of those comics are in this trade paperback.
The initial story of X-23 is a better read really. Its a focused story of how she came into being and why she later ends up in New York. The art is clear, well colored and detailed. Added to all that there is a short section about the origin of X-23 as a character in the front with cool little easter eggs in the comic.
The NYX stories are also a good read but the focus on X-23 shifts totally and she is really only a side character. No big deal, its still a good read and while, again in my opinion, the art isn't as crisp and the pastels are less evocitive, its still high class work.
A Mixed Bag.......2006-12-27
I agree with the other reviewers that the first half of this book, collecting the X-23 miniseries, is superb. The writing and storytelling are top-notch, featuring characters that you care about and can sympathize with, and it's also a gripping action/adventure tale. I would compare it to watching episodes of 24 back to back, it's like one long two hour action movie with great characters. The art, also, is superb. It's pretty appealing, with great colors, and very crisp and delightful. Moreover, the action was always clear, and you could always tell what was going on. I would give the story and art both A+.
However, the second half of the story is a mixed bag. It collects NYX, issues 1-7, which was a pretty problematic series. First of all, the writing isn't as good as the first half. It's paced abysmally slow, with new characters being introduced all the time whose purposes are not really clear. Moreover, I found the majority of the characters to be incredible unlikeable. Whereas I could read the first half in one continuous setting, the second half I was often bored and had to put it down to go back to it.
The writer, Joe Quesada, is a great artist in his own right, and did some great things for Marvel as the Editor-in-Chief. However, he's just not that good of a writer. The plot is decent enough, but the dialogue could have used a polish. Honestly, there were many points where the characters were unintentionally hilarious. I applaud him for trying an edgy story, but the way the characters acted and the way they were written made them somewhat comical and laughable. Fortunately, Joshua Middleton's art in issues 1 to 4 more than made up for the story's inadequacies. Not only is his line work gorgeous, but his layouts made up for the writing's problematic pacing. The story and dialogue might have been lame, but the art sure was pretty to look at. However, when this book came out, it was perpetually late, as Joe Quesada could not get the script in on time, and as a result Joshua Middleton left the series to pursue more reliable work to be replaced by Rob Teranishi, who didn't quite live up to the preceding brilliance. Rob Teranishi is no Joshua Middleton, and the characters looked drastically different. Additionally, whereas Middleton told the action very clearly, Teranishi's storytelling was a bit muddled, and I had difficulty understanding some of the action at the end. It was quite a drop from Middleton's excellent artwork to Teranishi's rather average art. On top of that, you could definitely sense that the story was meant to go on much longer, but had to wrap up quickly because Quesada couldn't maintain a monthly schedule. For the previous seven issues, subplot after subplot is laid out, and then... 90% of them were forgotten. So all in all, a mixed bag. Writing: C+. Middleton's Art: A+. Teranishi's Art: C.
So all in all, I would say, the first half is one of the best reads I've had in a while, while the second half was rather disappointing. I would still recommend this though, if you're a big visual art fan. Billy Tan's excellent art from the first half and Joshua Middleton's beautiful art deserve the oversized treatment. Otherwise this volume might be a bit too pricey.
I love it when comics are THIS good..........2005-12-05
Coming from someone with extensive knowledge of the Marvel Universe but knowing nothing about "X-23", let me tell you I was pleasantly blown away by this compendium.
The book is divided into two sections: one corresponds to the X-23 mini-series, the second has the first half-dozen or so "NYX" issues. The two stories are separate and have distinct personalities, written and drawn by separate teams. The common link is the X-23 character. The first part is her "origin", the second part would be something like, "chapter two", I guess.
Anyways, "X-23" is an absolutely stunning story about this waif with retractable claws, created by some clandestine quasi-government operation.
So immediately, there are a few things that come to mind. Obviously, the character Wolverine MUST be involved somehow, no? I mean, come on...look at the cover.
Well, he is, but not in the way you might think. And even if it IS in the way you might think, the story plays out in ways NO one could have foreseen. I read these issues in one white-hot, desperate sitting.
Written by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, with outstanding art by Billy Tan and Jon Sibal (and sublime color by Brian Haberlin), this is about as good as modern comics get. I'm dying to tell you more, but that would spoil so much of the experience...
Before I go on...no kiddies should be reading this stuff. Lots of violence, blood and gore here...with "adult" themes more prevalent in the book's second half. It's pretty intense.
The book's second half doesn't burn as brightly as the first. The story, by Joe Quesada, and the art by Joshua Middleton, Robert Teranishi and company, aren't as jaw-droppingly good.
Let me get this straight: they're still pretty freakin' awesome. It's just that they happen to follow a particularly mind-blowing set of comics.
This tale introduces us to several young teens, having a bit of trouble in and around the seedy areas of Alphabet City.
By "a bit of trouble", I mean drugs, guns, prostitution, extortion, homelessness, abuse, and of course, those pubertal hormones that cause havoc on young mutants.
Again, it's real tough to avoid spoilers here...there are so many good plot twists and visual sequences in both stories...
...if you are at all curious about these titles...this is an excellent buy.
If you own them already, I have to say you still might want this. The book itself is on par with the other excellent Marvel hardcovers of the past few years...nice binding, great paper, excellent reproduction...and it's a bit bigger than the original comic, so it's, in a tactile sense, a pleasure to read.
I love it when comics are THIS good...

Wow... This was riveting.......2007-04-05
What a story. Ugly & brutal and yet heart-wrenching. This is truly an extraordinary graphic novel. If I had one complaint, it would be that the artwork definitely follows the anime tradition, and I personally prefer more a realistic style.
Never Believed it..........2007-03-27
...Would be soo good. I mean, Wow! that was a pretty stupid idea to make a Wolverine's daughter. But ut actually came out great! don't believe it? Just try it out!
A must for every X-Men fan.
The most interesting story I've read for some time........2006-06-09
First of all, I am new to the X-Men, so I can't very well judge what the seasoned fanatics will think of this. After all, the X-Men themselves don't even appear- except for a flashback showing Wolverine.
But make no mistake- this story is brilliant.
Here's what you should note:
1.) The drama is very real here. It is a highly emotional plot that works so well that it would probably make a darn good movie.
2.) There is plenty of action, all of which is wonderfully illustrated- and note that there is more than a little bloodshed.
I hope this is enough to help you make a judgement. But please, even if you don't read it now, read it SOON. The story is absolutely engrossing and I believe that the character X-23/Laura has the potential to become exceptionally popular among fans.
Customer Reviews:
the best of Bloom.......2005-01-14
This is vintage berkeley. I enjoyed a lot of his stuff from that time period. Many political references that just made fun of the people of the time. Doesn't get more ironic or insulting than that in just a few frames. I liked the read and the way the characters evolved. Yea, Opus! Good stuff.
Classic BC/O Primer.......1999-04-22
I'd already owned all of the Bloom County and Outland books, this being my last purchase. I had seen it in the bookstore when it was published, but figured I already had the strips contained therein - why spend the extra money? I happened one day to be flipping through the book when I read the introduction, specifically the first page of said intro. There, in color bolder than life, was a painting from, Breathed claims, his early years, entitled Geshundeit. It was precisely this abrupt style of humor that brought me into the BC fold. The golden years of Bloom County, with Breathed's pithy observations of the late 80's, kept me there. If you want to understand the following Breathed has, this volume is the perfect place to start.
Book Description
From Blade Runner to the forthcoming A Scanner Darkly (starring Keanu Reeves), via Total Recall, Screamers, Impostor, Paycheck and Tom Cruise in Minority Report, the legacy of science fiction writer Philip K. Dick has revolutionised Hollywood.
Counterfeit Worlds is the definitive history of all the adaptations of Dick's work, not only the films but also TV series, radio plays, even operas and computer games. Beginning with a concise biography of Dick, acclaimed writer Brian J. Robb looks at the evolution and production of each project in depth, along the way uncovering a wealth of new information, including the stories behind the fascinating unmade film Ubik (with a screenplay by Dick himself), and the stillborn sequels to Total Recall and the legendary Blade Runner.
Customer Reviews:
PKD's direct and indirect influence on film.......2007-05-27
First off, I haven't read too many books on films based upon the works of PKD. I bought this book because I'm a fan of Dick's works, and the films that are closely linked to it (A Scanner Darkly primarily, but before that film came out, Blade Runner - the rest, to me, are like Vanilla Sky, and the Matrix; movies `using' Dick's ideas).
Secondly, I found this to be a very good overview of not only the films that were based on PKD's works (Blade Runner, Total Recall, Screamers, Confessions d'un Barjo, Impostor, Minority Report, Paycheck, and A Scanner Darkly), but also his life (~32 pages), radio and TV adaptations, and upcoming/unmade projects (film and otherwise).
You should read this book if;
a) You're interested in reading about PKD's life,
b) You're interested in reading about how some of his films ended up being made (those listed above),
c) You're interested in reading about the influence that PKD's works had on the realm of film in general.
You shouldn't read this book if you want to find out more about the radio/tv programs based upon his works, since you won't get too much from this book on these (not that you necessarily should).
If you're just interested in finding out more about Blade Runner, you'd probably be safe purchasing this book for that reason alone.
There's lots of pictures, the type is rather normal (small-ish, in a good way), and there's some new content in this book - not just the author's perspectives, but also new interviews, albeit only snippets from these - so you'll certainly get your money's worth.
4 stars because I didn't `love it' - I thought it was very good, and I may end up looking at particular parts over again (and it got me to dust off my copy of Impostor for another viewing), but there's no real reason to re-read the book, in my opinion.
Customer Reviews:
Comparison.......1999-12-15
This boook & the Previus ones about Byzantine Music restrict there Studies to the period before the 15th century. So the results about the expression of Byzantine music do not take in account it's practice till now, & they show that there is a gape between what was writen before the 15th century & what is writen & chanted now adays. The notes expresses what is chanted, & it meens nothing in itself. So we must take in consideration that the Byzantine Music Scriptures are translated wrongly in this book, & there is somthong missing, but I do not know how to mannage with these trnslations. Excuse me, but I am searching for an answer.

Book Description
The court exercised an enormous amount of influence on the culture of the middle ages, as the essays collected here demonstrate. They examine a wide variety of different areas of medieval courtly culture, from the history of the book through courtly music to the theory of courtesy and courtly love. While some authors deal with the central texts of courtly literature, such as Castiglione's Book of the Courtier, Marie de France's Lais, the romances of Chrétien de Troyes, Wolfram von Eschenbach, Gottfried von Strassburg, and the corpus of courtly lyric in various languages, others consider less-studied works like Galeran de Bretagne, or the French version of the Disciplina Clericalis. Several contributions take a comparative approach to courtly texts outside the Western tradition, while others point to the courtly nature of chronicle literature and to courtly influences on religious-didactic works. The volume as a whole thus presents an overview of medieval court culture. Contributors: GLORIA ALLAIRE, LAURA D. BAREFIELD, ANNE BERTHELOT, BERT BEYNEN, JEAN BLACKER, WALTER BLUE, MAUREEN BOULTON, FRANK BRANDSMA, EMMA CAYLEY, MARCO CEROCCHI, CHRISTOPHER R. CLASON, ALAIN CORBELLARI, IVY A. Putting medieval British music back on the map.......2002-02-15
Nicky Losseff's 'The Best Concords' is one of the few studies of English medieval music to discuss the repertory in any depth. The main themes of the book are that these pieces of music, which include motets and conductus in Latin and the vernacular, have suffered through being overshadowed by the so-called Notre Dame polyphony of the 13th century. Losseff is careful to ensure that the difference between where a piece was copied and where it may have originated are clearly distinguished. The majority of pieces of music from this period are found in fragments of leaves from what were originally much larger books, but an important source which has survived almost intact originated at St Andrew's in Scotland. However, the importance of this book may well also have given a false idea that it was representative of musical practice across the British Isles at the time that it was copied (c.1230).
Although this is clearly a highly detailed, academic text, the writing style is accessible and communicates the author's obvious enthusiasm for the subject. There are few musical examples in the text, and to fully understand the points being made I would recommend finding a copy of the appropriate volumes of Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century, which contains most of the complete pieces. For students wishing to engage with the issues relating to the transmission of insular music during this period, this is an invaluable text.

Book Description
This brand-new revision, in modern algebraic notation, is sure to become a classic of chess instruction.
It was written for the chess player who needs to understand, not memorize, the chess openings. The three basic principles of the opening are well established and will not change in the foreseeable future. By emphasizing these principles, the author has created a timeless teaching volume that can be used by students, parents, teachers, and others for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
Unnecessary.......2003-10-11
This book is really unnecessary. If you first study the basic opening principles found in most any beginning chess book and then play through the opening sequences of the games in Chernev's Logical Chess Move by Move and/or Nunn's Understanding Chess Move by Move, then you've already accomplished everything (and more) that this book might help you accomplish. You can save your money.
Masterpiece full of typos.......2003-06-01
If you have basic understanding of chess strategy and tactics this is the book you should buy to play any opening well. It teaches opening principles in plain english. Before you start memorizing variations make yourself a favour and read this littte masterpiece from Mr Mednis. It is a shame this revised algebraic edition if full of typos, which is why I have not given it 5 stars.
Cannot beat basic principles.......2001-10-27
I have not played competitive chess for over fifteen years now but have decided to get back into the game. I know how important the openings are because there is nothing worse than losing a game before you even start. I also know how boring it can be memorizing different sets of moves. This book teaches you the principle of the opening phase without you having to memorize. When you do start playing the established openings, you will be able to appreciate the underlying thought processes behind them. A must for anyone who wants to get through the opening phase without cramming.
Good Stuff.......2001-04-23
Many chessplayers concern themselves with memorizing hundreds and hundreds of opening moves. What they don't understand is the ideas behind. Here is a solid book which does not go too deep into openings, but explains the ideas behind them. Along with the openings, Mednis shows master games which were won becuase of solid opening play. A must for a chessplayer who is ready to handle openings theories, but not just memorizing them.
notation problems.......2000-01-26
Just a quick heads-up for people planning on buying this book - its in the old notation 1.pq4 instead of 1.e4 I bought it since it was highly recommended, but had problems reading it.

Arvind

How to avoid making a VERY expensive mistake.......2004-08-31
Falcone offers invaluable advice as to how to "identify high performance candidates, probe beyond superficial answers, spot 'red flags' which indicate evasions or untruths, get references which provide reliable information about candidates, and negotiate job offers which attract winners." The value of this book is perhaps best indicated by the results of research conducted by Bradford D. Smart of more than 4,000 executives in 50 of the "Fortune 500" companies, shared in Topgrading which I have reviewed previously. The results confirm Peter Drucker's assertion that "The ability to make good decisions regarding people represents one of the last reliable sources of competitive advantage, since very few organizations are very good at it." For me, the most stunning revelations in Smart's book are found on page 50, in Figure 3.2, "Cost of Mis-Hire Study Results." According to the results of Smart's extensive research study, the sum of total costs of a mis-hire (on average) are as follows:
Base salary Less than $100,000: 14 times salary
Base Salary $100,000-250,000: 28 times salary
All Salaries: 24 times salary
Sobering statistics indeed. In his book, Falcone includes two recurring sections which define the context within which each of the 96 questions is asked: "Why Ask This Question?" and "Analyzing the Response." He also alerts the reader/interviewer to relevant "Red Flags" which might otherwise be invisible. Books such as this (and it's one of the best) can guide and inform a rigorous process by which to identify those candidates which offer the strongest talent, skills, and (yes) character. I strongly recommend this book to any and all decision-makers and decision-influencers who are involved in their organization's hiring process. But please keep in mind that candidates may have also read this book. For interviewers, it is highly desirable to reveal the person "behind the resume." It is also imperative to obtain "real information" from credible reference persons. My own opinion is that they as well as candidates need to be thoroughly checked out.
Perfect for Recruiters and Hiring Managers.......2004-06-29
Paul Falcone worked as the Employment Manager for a very large mortgage company. His 96 questions are a compilation of questions that he gathered over the years that help narrow down a candidate pool. These questions are above and beyond the normal tested legal quidelines, they ask whether a person can do the job as described.
If you are a hiring manager, this will help you to have a template to ask great job related questions. For those organizations who like to have structured interviews, this can be used to pick and choose questions for various managers to help compile a great profile from the interview process. Structuring allows you not to repeat the same questions and shows the candidates that you are careful in your selection process and are interested in getting the best.
If you are a recruiter, manager or even a job seeker wondering what may be asked in an interview, this is a great tool to have in your library.
Worth its weight in gold.......2004-02-04
From a job seeker perspective, this book has been worth personally more than 2000 times its list price. It is like being able to read the other team's playbook before the championship game! If you are seeking a job in Corporate America, don't go in without reading this book because this book will get you half way there......and in some unfortunate "buzz-word company" cases - all the way. It tells you everything they want to hear and why. Satisfy HR first, and then worry about your potenital new boss. Why waste your money on learning what you could say during an interview from other books. This book truly allows you to switch seats with your interviewer. This book is truly deserving of the yellow cover with black stripes and should be entitled, "Interviewing in Corporate America"
A must buy book.......2003-08-08
I have been interviewing & hiring candidates for several years now, but recently decided to do a little more research into the topic. This book is excellent. It is written in a manner that is easy to open and read at any relevant chapter, making for a quick reference style use or for more in-depth reading if needed. The suggested questions are insightful and the analysis for each question helps you take the candidates answers to the next level. The sections on checking references have also helped me move beyond the paralysis of not knowing what I am legally able to ask, therefore making reference checking the useful tool that it is meant to be.
Exceptional Insight.......2002-09-13
This book is a must read for anyone that will be interviewing others, or will ever be looking for a job themselves. It provides insight into the standard set of HR questions, that an interviewer ought to know. "What are your strengths"... "Weaknesses"... Why ask these questions unless you know what you are looking for? This book provides an indepth discussion of these and other questions with sample answers, what you should look for in an answer, and possible follow up questions. It clarifies the interviewing process. From a job hunting perspective it helps to hone your skills, and to prepare you for the HR onslaught of seemingly arcane questions.
