Hey, the 70s and 80s are over..........1998-03-14
No question about, when Paul Rand (and others)made the different logos that are in book, it worked like a charm. For the 70s and 80s, that is. There are lessons to be learned but the book feels stuck in the timeperiod 1970-80. So before buying it you should check it out first.
Remind yourself why you became a designer!.......1998-02-19
This book is a wonderful source of inspiration, worth owning for the essay "Good Design is Goodwill" alone. The text appears at first to be slight, but will leave your psyche feeling nourished; Rand's writing style was very much like his graphic style: it's economical, but every word is perfectly chosen and placed.

Meticulously reproduced selection of pages from rare Sears catalogs chronicles what youngsters, ages 4 to 16, wore during the first half of the 20th century. Descriptive captions accompany more than 300 illustrations — from flattering dresses with plunging necklines to men's wide, hand-painted ties. A rich social document.

Great source for historic clothing!.......2007-04-04
I've truly enjoyed this book as I'm in the process of writing my own novel and needed a good source for period clothing. This book gave me some great ideas on how styles were designed for one of America's most famous catalogs, Sears. Also has great pictures of hats/bonnets. What's even more fun is how much stylish clothing cost in those days! A definite recommendation!

Nick Twisp is back! America's most literate teen diarist returns with more riotous adventures through the land mines of 21st century adolescence. This sequel to C.D. Payne's acclaimed first novel "Youth in Revolt" finds love-struck Nick Twisp still on the lam from the law and his parents. Our 14-year-old hero (and his multiplying alter egos) now must battle blizzards, back-stabbing aliens, vengeful parents, and school officials determined to schedule him into girls' gym. He conspires to play cupid, journeys south of the border on a secret mission, takes some gunplay lessons from his distraught mom, and still finds time to confide all to his diary while inadvertently wreaking havoc in cyberspace. A must-read for Nick Twisp fans.

Couldn't Get Enough.......2007-09-01
Having finished "Youth in Revolt" over a year ago and feeling slightly dead inside after having put such colorful characters to rest, I was more than relieved to find there was a second book of insight into the mind of the incorrigible Nick Twisp. Funny, sarcastic, and gripping, "Revolting Youth" is a great escape from reality and a good chance to delve into the conscience of daring Nick and his one and only Sheeni. A must read for fans of the journey... time to order the next one!
Rebutal.......2007-07-22
I read this book in one sitting, huge fan of the original. More than one person has told me of their disapointment with this book, but most people walk into a sequel with apprehension.
I'm just here to refute some claims from the negative review here. I'll be quick 'cause I hate reading huge reviews.
1."This sequel was so terrible and so ludicrous and overall a waste of my time." Yes, its ludicrous, but wasn't the first book also? When was the line that made this book too rediculous crossed?
2. The reviewer I've cited, plus some friends of mine, have pointed out that the writing style has changed somewhat also. I thnk we should all give Payne a pass on this one. After all, this second book WAS published some ten years after the original. If Payne's style had not changed, then his writing would be stagnant. Try as he might, he may find it hard to regress to where he was when he wrote Youth in Revolt. Is it really that different?
The only problems I have with the book are the akward anachronisms that you see every now and then. It's like the original book stopped in the early 90's, but this one starts in the late 90's, considering some technology and whatnot...
For that, and because its a sequel, I give it four stars. Definatley worth it if you liked the original. And if you liked the first book, as so many do, how can you resist a sequel?

revolting youth.......2006-11-02
hilarios c.d payne did it agian! a must read if you liked the 1st one
Wow..what can I say?.......2006-07-16
After reading "Youth in Revolt", I knew I had to pick up the next book. Thankfully, it was just as interesting as the first book. I was constantly on edge, as C.D. Payne made me feel as if I were Nick himself. I also found myself relating to everything Nick did for his love. This is a book to get people, the CRAZY ending will have you wanting more.
Nick Twisp, you do surprise me.......2006-05-26
I confess I laughed as much from this book as from the first one. Frankly I'm mystified by the complaints of people who didn't like this one. Am I missing something? My friend who introduced me to Nick thinks some people expect a more realistic story. But with an author as imaginative as this guy, why would you want him to stick with realism. That's why I like Michael Connelly but he writes crime fiction. Reading Nick Twisp I'm just out for laughs. I look forward to more, since I hear there are two more books in the series to be published.

I have the world's shortest review for the world's crappiest book.
Dog Poop
Hard Hitting New Paperback Edition.......2007-02-08
At first glance, I was intrigued with the title: "My Life Tailing Paris Hilton." But then I realized this book was written by her dog and not Greek shipping heirs.
After carefully reading into the intricate clues of The Tinkerbell Code, I found this incredible admission from the little pooch: "The Valtrexx was mine." Stunning. It's there. If you follow the clues.
"Beware the blonde of Man."
A Prostitute's Field Guide to Success!!.......2005-12-15
Learn how this poor dog wittnessed first hand how Paris Hilton truly worked her way up to acheiving the status of a dirty trash bin. This book is a groundbreaking documentary of how to be the dirtiest peice of garbage on the corner!!!! If you are in need of this book, you better act quick and steal it from your local porn shop befor they're all out.
Loving It In DEMOCRATIC NEW YORK.......2005-01-25
This book rocks! I now find myself quoting a frigging chihuahua! It's hilarious, thought provoking and leaves you 95% stupider than you were before! Wow what a bargain...keep em coming Queen Hilton!
Besides, I'm a Democrat so you know that I'm right and my opinion is the only one that matters...right Hollywood? CBS? Dan Rathers??
perfect stocking stuffer for the criminally cynical.......2004-12-14
This is just good fun. It is so cynically wonderful and the parody is well done. When else will you read, "I have bells. Like I don't naturally stick out enough, now I can annoy the deaf, too. Why not just go ahead and spray me with the juice of a skunk's ass and get the trifecta of offensive." It isn't Pulitzer winning writing; but if mocking the way-too-rich sounds like fun, you'll really enjoy this.
Book Description
More than any other writer, Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) is responsible for raising detective stories from the level of pulp fiction to literature. Philip Marlowe, his cynical, hard-boiled private eye, set the standard for rough, brooding heroes with a strong sense of honor despite living in an unfair world. Like Ian Fleming's James Bond, Marlowe has lived beyond his creator's works, appearing in radio and television shows and in numerous film adaptations.
Chandler's seven novels, including The Big Sleep (1939) and The Long Goodbye (1953), with their pessimistic view of life and stark, grim realism, had a direct influence on the emergence of film noir. In addition to the novels, Chandler wrote short stories and penned the screenplays for several films, including Double Indemnity (1944) and Strangers on a Train (1951).
Gene Phillips has written the first major biocritical study of Chandler in twenty years. It is the only one to explore Chandler's unpublished script for Lady in the Lake, examine the differences in the American and British releases of Strangers on a Train, discuss the merits of the unproduced screenplay for Playback, and compare Howard Hawks's director's cut of The Big Sleep with the version shown in theaters.
Phillips treats all of Chandler's original scripts, his adaptations of others' works, and screenplays based upon his own novels, providing insights into Chandler's genius and the power of his vision to transcend the constraints of a single art form.

Chandler and Hollywood: Poisonous Marriage w/ Beautiful Kids.......2001-11-13
A very interesting and thorough examination of the film-related work of mystery legend Raymond Chandler, creator of the ultimate film noir gumshoe, Phillip Marlowe. The books follows Chandler's career and work from pulpy dime detective story-writer, to novelist, to screenwriter. Chandler was an odd, cantankerous fellow who hated working in Hollywood, but the character he created is forever in the pantheon of American detective film heroes.
An Admirable Mess.......2001-01-06
Is it possible for a book to be both invaluable and annoyingly almost unreadable? If so, this is the one. Phillips is absolutely on target in both his evaluation of Chandler's place in literature (High) and his fascinating comparisons of book to film of EVERYTHING the author wrote. Fans of Marlowe, fans of detective stories, fans of film noir, and film fans in general, will find a treasure trove within these pages. B U T.... Phillips writes like a student who has been given a writing assignment of "x" number of words and has to fulfill it. Either that or someone who is being paid by the word! Not only does he repeat the same information, often with virtually the same words, two, three, four, and more times within the book, he often does so within the same paragraph, and, on occasion, the same sentence! If you can, as I did, learn to spot this trend and skip whole passages as less necessary than a sequel to "Little Nicky", there is much to be gleaned from the book. Just resist throwing it against the wall in exasperation.

Pretty Good.......2007-04-14
This is my first puzzle book and I find it to be entertaining. There a number of errors and mistakes. I found a couple of mates in 4 that were actually mates in 3. I find that disturbing in this age of computers. If you enjoy puzzle books then get it. But, it's not the best out there.
too many typos.......2007-02-24
I'm a begining chess student, but long time reader. I could only make it thru to problem 50 before deciding the book was a waste of money. Before problem 50 I found two typos, a mate in one move, an alternate ending that is not listed and finally, on problem fifty no checkmate. All of these errors and his puzzles have not even progressed beyond "mate in two". How could I then take time on longer puzzles without feeling like I am on a wild goose chase. If I am going to spend my money on a book it needs to be accurate. Not an unedited untried uncared about money making scheme.
A nice addition to your chess library........2005-08-28
The very fact that this book tells you that the best move in each situation will lead to a (relatively short term) checkmate immediately greatly cuts down the set of moves you need to consider -- as such, you're not going to become a great tactician just by reading this book alone. The best benefit you will get from working through this book is the ability to visualize combinations of moves reaching 5 or 6 moves deep -- from this you can graduate to a different book of more general tactical problems where you no longer know the best answer is a checkmate.
The problems are, as noted by many reviewers very realistic. Sometimes he has a wrong answer or two, and other times, while his answer is right, there are also other right moves not given in the book -- but the vast majority of times he is right and covers all of the relevant lines. (Usually he gets all the possible lines, but in some cases too many lines are "possible" to list them all).
Nice book so far.......2004-07-15
This book is good so far even now I have only done one chapter. I enjoyed the first chapter that has mates in two. This book has mates in two three four five six and seven. Of course mates in two are the easiest the lower is easier than mates in five six or seven.
A great puzzle book.......2004-07-04
I found this puzzle book to be very helpful. The positions are realistic with realistic variety (approximately an equal mix of kingside castled positions and "exposed king hunt" positions with few queenside positions). Unlike the Reinfeld 1001 Checkmates, each puzzle in this book tells you how many moves you need to make to reach checkmate. I found that this forces me to look more deeply at the position because a lot of times you might see what looks (for example) like a simple mate in two but it is actually a mate in three. When this happens you know you've missed the opponent's best reply. Even though not knowing the number of moves would be more realistic, this is a very valuable exercise and it has actually led to an improvement in my ability to solve the Reinfeld problems. I deducted a star for a few errors but otherwise this is a great exercise book.

Fun, Informative, yet Inefficient read.......2007-08-06
Many of the points in this book could have been made more clearly and with much shorter explanations.
This book has EXCELLENT content, but is an inefficient read.
Inspiring!.......2007-01-12
This book lights a fire under your butt! The author does a great job laying out the steps. Although the lack of skillful editing bothered me a bit in the beginning, it does deliver. After only a few days of reading, I was able to get get very clear and focused on how to present my ideas. In a month, I had my first chunk of real money to work with.
