Book Description
This ambitious collection treating the Italian Fascists' appropriation of the past for political purposes focuses on the role of the visual in the aim of fusing the past and the modern world in Mussolini's Italy. With contributions by art historians and classicists, literary and intellectual historians, Donatello among the Blackshirts demonstrates that the Fascist regime appropriated not only Italy's ancient Roman past but also the medieval, Renaissance, and even baroque eras, as well as its own recent history, in constructing a new myth of the nation.
Every aspect of visual culturefrom monumental architecture, sculpture, painting, and gardens to exhibitions, spectacles, films, medals, household items, and stampshelped to link the past with modernity. As a result, Italy's artistic traditions became familiar to all social classes throughout the peninsula. While this richly illustrated book concerns Fascist Italy, at the same time it also shows how Italy's premodern artistic traditions have been passed down to the present through the filter of the Fascist era.
Book Description
Photographs of the wildest, weirdest and most interesting tattoos of the NBA, accompanied by firsthand accounts of what the tattoos mean and why they're there en years ago, Dennis Rodman was the only NBA player with tattoos worth mentioning and back then he was considered a freak. Now around 70% of the league is 'tatted out.' The game is played so fast that it's hard to tell what even the most obvious tattoos actually are. And some of the most interesting ones are hidden behind jerseys or under socks. Allen Iverson has more than two dozen tattoos-some you can see, some you can't. Some are obvious, like his nickname, 'the answer,' and some are cryptic like 'Jewelz,' or 'NBN.' What's on Stephon Marbury's forearm? What's covering Cherokee Parks' entire body? In the Paint takes you in the locker room and as close as you can get to the tattoos and the stories of the NBA.

Hmm..........2004-01-08
This may look odd but I was trying to post someone else's review of my book that they e-mailed to me. I mean, why would I review my own book? I didn't even read it.
What a joke!.......2003-12-25
NBA players have no respect for the art of tattooing or the history of it-- they simply get tattoos to look tough and/or get attention. This book is about as superficial as the tattoos it portrays.
Tattoos and Sports.......2003-12-11
I was'nt that impressed with this book.I thought it was going to go into alot more detail and show better array of pictures. Most of the pictures you can see on the internet already. The pictures that new were very few and far in between. It is a nice book to add to a collection,if you like tattoos or sports. Not a hreat book to learn about the players tattoos and meanings or even to see pctures of them. Some pictures shown didnt even get explained in the book.
Fascinating Inside Look In the Paint.......2003-11-21
This book is more than just a bunch of pictures of NBA guys with tatoos -- though it has some great pictures. It is wittily written (the jacket says the author is comedy writer) without being condescending to the athletes. It's informative and fun and thorough. The players come off as everything from funny and strange to thoughtful and deep. My only complaint is that the colors in the photography could be a little more vivid. I'd reccommend this book to any NBA, skin art, or self expression.

That's Entertainment!.......2006-07-16
Mr Fordin's a great writer with great taste in subject matter. I owned this one first in hardback as "The World of Entertainment". It's so fabulous I bought it again in paperback. One of the best researched and documented film books I know.
Pete Hamilton.......2004-10-23
The text of this book is very interesting. It's more of a nuts and bolts of how the movies were put together than a critque of the movies themselves.
However, beware if you are replacing an older edition of this book. This edition is inferior to one that I had years ago. The pictures in this version look like they were photocopied from an earlier version of the book. Many are grainy and washed out. Also, a number of the pictures at the tops of pages are cropped so that tops of some of the heads are cut off. I know this wasn't how earlier versions of this book looked. Although a minor point, in the back of previous editions there was a list of much money each film cost, as well as the domestic and foreign grosses of each film. I found this interesting, and I was sorry to see it missing.
YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSIN'!!!!!.......2002-05-10
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!!!!
I love to know the behind-the-scenes of the days Gene Kelly made his magic at MGM, so Gene drew me to buying this book. Well, Mr Arthur Freed, if there could be more "bosses" like you today, the workplace would be a much happier place to be. Arthur and his "UNIT" or as I like to call them, "THE CREW" will have you laughing, maybe even crying and definitely astounded, amazed and so very happy that this man was the back bone and the money maker of this fabulous studio of the real movie days. His mind is one that could never be found again in any producer of today. They definitely cracked the mould when they made this man. So, I recommend that you buy this book, and even purchase the movie under the same title. Mr Hugh Fordin has done the most fantastic job on this book. You will feel like you are standing there in every scene that is described..
A book about the Master by a Master.......2002-01-23
Hugh Fordin is an expert in his field. His detailed research is clearly evident throughout this work. His love of theater, film and particularly the Hollywood (make that MGM) Musical is revealed in the many interviews he conducted with people involved in every aspect of the productions he writes about. He shares small insights and many heretofore unknown facts about this disappeared genre of movie making. If this isn't a textbook at film schools, it should be. A superb work whose value increases over the years.
Excellent.......1999-12-21
I was expecting this to be a straight biography of Arthur Freed with discussions on his films but instead I was pleasantly surprised to see that the entire book is a blow-by-blow account of how the films were made (which to a movie buff is pure heaven) and, as the author says, Freed's movies were his life anyway.
I think it says something that the title of this book is "M.G.M.'s Greatest Musicals", since the truly amazing thing is that one man was more or less responsible for all of them. Great behind-the-scenes stories.

Book Description
The work of the Wagnerian theorist and analyst Alfred Lorenz (1869-1939) has had a profound influence upon both Wagnerian scholarship and music analysis in the twentieth century, and yet it has never been properly evaluated. Analyzing Wagner's Operas outlines the origins and development of the expressive aesthetic in writings by Wagner and others, as well as in early-twentieth-century theories of musical form, and it considers Lorenz's work and contributions in this light. The book also hopes to show, to the extent possible, where Lorenz's work acted as a sort of "musical metaphor" for German nationalist ideology during the Nazi era.

Customer Reviews:
great for 1000-1500, good for 1500-1700, not for 1700+.......2005-05-16
I would like give this book 4.5 stars.
It has 200+ puzzles, basically. Majority of them are good
for 1000-1500. 1500-1700 rated people will benefit b/c
of the practice, b/c there are definitely some tough ones.
negative point:
this idea of "target" really does not work evry well
in real life. These should have been presented in
different context. e.g. What is white's best move?
Then, each could have been explained in terms what
should have tipped off the reader to the break
through tactics.
It still deserves 4.5 stars b/c they are so many
to practice with and they are all good ones (some
are easy, sure, but not all).
If you are over 1700, most likely you will not benefit
from this.
Too Bad and Basic..........2002-01-10
This book is just too basic to be of any real use... The comments that Bruce makes are also a bit annoying on a few problems etc... Also I think they fail to capture the real point sometimes as well. If your rated about 800 and wanna make it to maybe 1000. Thats about as far as this book can take you at best to be honest. Try a book like The Mammoth book of Chess, or Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. Just to name to starter books that would help you more. If you wanna be another stepping stone for someone. Then by all means invest and waste your money in this book.
Must-buy.......2001-08-18
I thought this was a neat book. This book explains how to handle hand to hand combat for each and every square. I would reccomend this book to all beginers.
An excellent exercise for honing and beginning chess skills.......1999-08-25
Bruce Pandolfini shows his true abilities as a chess coach and player by writing this introductory/continuation of the ancient game chess. The book covers every square of the board, going over such battle tactics as the more obvious skewer, fork, basic trapping, to the subtler pin and Zugswang. He shows and teaches the player how to recognize the piece to be exploited, and how to do it quickly and visciously, leaving your opponent floundering in your mighty wake. I highly recommend it as a starting point for anyone wanting to beat their opponent.
Tactics for ___Beginners___.......1997-05-18
This book is for beginners. Just for beginners. It has lots of "nice" positions but it's _too_ easy and obvious. I didn't like the comments on each problem - sometimes Bruce is very ironic and looses the _real point_
Book Description
Since its original publication in 1995, Leading with Soul has inspired thousands of readers. Far ahead of its time, the book bravely revealed the path to leadership to be a very personal journey requiring a knowledge of self and a servant-leader mentality. Now, in this new and revised edition, authors Bolman and Deal address such currrent issues as the changing nature of work, the new face of today's workforce, and the greater need for an infusion of soul in the workplace. They also include real-life stories from readers of the first edition, and answer key questions that those readers raise. As vital as ever, this revisted narrative of an executive and his quest for deeper meaning continues to point the way to a more fulfilling work experience.
Customer Reviews:
Saccharine for the Soul.......2007-07-12
First, a disclaimer -- I'm an atheist, so a book that regularly refers to concepts like "soul" and "prayer" wasn't perfect for me.
That said, as a former partner in an international management consulting firm I've had to wade through many poorly written management and advice books. Among those, this stands out for being particularly vapid. The conceit of being a work of fiction that teaches allows the authors to ignore the need for research or data. The fictional account also allows them to avoid taking any repsonsibility for presenting alternate viewpoints or expressing doubt.
Most management books have a theme that could have been confined to a ten page article, which the authors instead run out to 200 pages to make a book. In this case, the messages of "more to life than work" and "treat employees with respect" would have better been presented as a five paragraph essay.
Nice cover photo of the woods though...
leading with soul.......2007-04-07
I found this book to be very well written, useful in my career decision making.
I hope to read more books written by this arthur.
Easy Read Business Book.......2007-03-11
Leading with Soul is an easy read. But it has so much to give to the reader. It interweaves a story line of an executive in crisis with business advice rather than just telling war stories. It could be one of those business books that you read once a year. It is a living book that would continually have new insights as you live your life.
For example I participated in an on-line book study at the Work and Worship Institute, and one of the questions I answered was:
Reflect on Gandhi's words we must "become the change that we want to see in the world."
My answer: I think it is critical that leaders role model the type of behavior and values they want to see in followers. It is hard to change other people when you haven't experienced the change yourself. Also by trying to become the change our understanding of the change will we different. The group might still need to make the change but how a change is implemented or the timing of the change can be very different. I work with small businesses, it helps that I bought a business and went bankrupt as I consult with them. I have walked a difficult small business walk. I understand that new change of starting a new adventurer of a small business. I am the change because I have taken a risk.
Obviously you would answer this question differently and I would answer it differently today than I did two years ago. Enjoy this valuable book.
Leading with Soul book.......2007-02-12
I recieved the latest version of the book. The shipping was within the deadline promised. It is the latest edition of the book. The book itself is of medium quality. It is a new, unused hardback but the finish of the pages is rough. There are pages sticking out from the inside a couple centimeters and (compared with the straitness of the text)the top and bottom of the pages from left to right are uneven. It is obvious this was a cheap reproduction of the origonal and it was not cut right from the factory. When the book is looked at it appears someone or something was chewing on all the edges of the pages inside the book. The hard cover is perfect though. But, seeing as I paid less than 8 dollars for a HARD BACK book and that all the printed text was perfect and more than readable, I really souldn't complain. I am satisfied. The cosmetic errors did not take away at all from the functionality of the book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED SELLER!
I wish all would lead with soul. Great book.......2006-10-26
A parable and an introduction to a personal journey from autocratic and hateful leadership to leadership with soul. This is a book that invites you in and holds you tight as you read this compelling journey. Changing from autocratic leadership to leading with soul is daunting and not many make the journey. My question is what does it take to move autocratic leadership to make the transition. May be the question of the century. If we can move people to this leadership paradigm, we can change people's lives, their family's lives, and create a new reality for the children of this world. Read this book.
