Book Description
Dot Dot Dot is not your father's design magazine -- a high-gloss tombstone with decontextualized, overproduced work by the "usual suspects." Instead, what you'll find is a groundbreaking journal that fills a longstanding gap in graphic arts publishing: a venue for creative, interdisciplinary journalism on subjects that affect the way we think about and make design. We're proud to add it to our growing catalog of books and journals.
For each issue, Dot Dot Dot invites a multidiscipllinary group of contributors to both write and design pieces about the past, present, and future of visual culture. Smart, passionate, and imaginatively designed, Dot Dot Dot is for graphic designers and anyone interested in the creative practice of the visual arts.
Issue 7 includes "The Problem with Posters" by Rob Giampietro, "Mexico 1968/Rotterdam 2003" by Peter Bilak, "'Landy's (Failed) Gesture' and the General Intellect" by J.J. King, "The Every Day Story of Flesh-Eating, Blood-Sucking Freaks" by Steve Rushton (with John Russell), "Eno and the Long Now" by Michael Bracewell (with Brian Eno and Lucy McKenzie), and "Writing on Money" by Paul Elliman, among others.

Book Description
Boaters, derbies, fedorasuntil just a generation or two ago, a man's social status, if not his very masculinity, was defined by his hat. For centuries, men owned hats for all seasons and occasions. But in the 1960s, the male hat became obsolete. Just as women shed their white gloves for the sexual revolution, men cast aside centuries of tradition and stopped wearing hats.
The hat's demise has over time been credited to President Kennedy, or Hatless Jack, due to his reluctance to be photographed wearing a hat for fear it made him look old. But one president alone did not make or break a trend. In this quirky social history, Neil Steinberg traces the evolution of the hat over centuries, as a costly but necessary investment, as a symbol of social status, and masculinity, and as a global industry.
Customer Reviews:
Do not operate heavy machinery while reading.......2007-10-02
Hatless Jack is an interesting look at the history of hats and their demise in the '60s, conventionally attributed to President Kennedy not wearing a hat during his inauguration. The book is thoroughly researched and provides some interesting insights into the social customs of the day.
I started to grow weary of the subject after the first hundred pages. I guess that part of my disenchantment derives from the belief that the entire premise is wrong. Kennedy may have influenced a few hat buying decisions, but The Beatles appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 was probably the true tipping point.
After seeing the four mop-tops on TV, it seemed like every boy in America wanted to grow his hair longer. Mainly because every American girl wanted a boyfriend who looked like her favorite Beatle. With longer hair, hats started dropping faster than party dresses on Prom night. Men's hats just look silly with long hair and no one wants hat hair all day long. Headbands started becoming a fashion statement along with the Mod styles from Carnaby Street.
The young drive fashion trends, not 40 year old men. When baby boomers gave up hats, anyone who wanted to look younger had to follow. The Vietnam War also had a play, because long hair became a protest statement for all draft age men who wanted to distance themselves from the short haired soldiers back in the day. Soon, only lonely bald men held steadfastly to their chrome dome protection.
Enjoyable Read for a Newly Initiated Fedora Wearer.......2007-01-03
I started wearing these kinds of hats just under a year ago. Having no background with such hats (my parents didn't either, I don't think), I was able to pick up quite a bit of "proper" hat etiquette from this book. Mostly, though, it was very interesting to see how JFK's dislike of hats was perceived as a catalyst for the "mandatory" hat-wearing of 50 years ago to fade.
Debunking the JFK Blame Game.......2005-12-12
In our business there is an awful lot of hand-wringing about the good old days when all well-dressed men wore hats. Hatters opine and whine about President Kennedy's refusal to wear hats resulting in a devastating effect on the industry. Neil Steinberg in Hatless JACK sets the record straight and debunks the assumption that JFK ruined the hat business. Instead, Steinberg places Kennedy's aversion to hats in the context of a trend in hatlessness that had been gaining momentum since the turn of the previous century. This is a well-researched and entertaining book, full of information and anecdotes pertaining to the historical importance of hats in American culture. Hatless JACK: The President, the Fedora, and the History of an American Style gives ever-more credence to what hat people understand - a hat is not just another article of apparel.
Where's the rabbit?.......2005-11-04
I'll never look at the top hat, from which the magician conjures the bunny, in the same way ever again.
HATLESS JACK is one of those fascinating treatises about a subject with which you wouldn't otherwise think to concern yourself. In this case, it's men's hats - Stetsons, derbies, fedoras, straw boaters, toppers - and the history, customs, etiquette, and practical pitfalls surrounding their use in America . More importantly, the book examines the demise of the hat as a necessary component of the well-dressed man's wardrobe. As the title implies, the disappearance of the hat from American male fashion can perhaps be largely attributed to President John Kennedy's aversion to wearing such. In debunking this theory, author Neil Steinberg, while incidentally writing an engaging (albeit superficial) narrative about America's youngest President, traces the decline of fashionable headgear back to the 1890's when female theater patrons found it obliging to remove their large and elaborate hats so people sitting behind could see the stage. From there, despite the heyday of fedoras and straw hats in the 1920s, it was all downhill, much to the consternation of the nation's hatmakers.
HATLESS JACK is also a compendium of historically interesting trivia. Did you know that the Hat Act, passed by the British Parliament in 1732, forbade American colonists from selling hats abroad or to each other, as well as the physical conveyance of hats by boat or horse? Or that the wearing of summer straw hats beyond September 15th could cause social unrest to the extent of rioting in the streets? Or that hatcheck girls of the 20s and 30s occupied a social position "halfway between a sister and a slut"?
HATLESS JACK cries out for a photo section; its sole deficiency is that it has none. There are supposedly pictures of JFK wearing a top hat during his inauguration (though he mostly carried it). I'd love to see one.
Oddly, Steinberg fails to mention the enduring association of hats, even to contemporary times, with that icon of Americana, the western cowboy. That phenomenon could have filled a chapter all by itself. (Country-western singers don't count.)
And do I own a hat? I do, actually - a grey canvas number reminiscent of that worn by Indiana Jones. I sport it at a jaunty angle on my out-of-state vacations to remind the local rubes that I'm not a swell to be trifled with.
Daily Mail praises "Hatless Jack".......2005-08-02
"Hatless Jack" was published by Granta in Britain Aug. 1, to rave reviews from the British press.
"It should be admired as wonderful, old school journalism," wrote the Daily Mail, which called the book "delightfully quirky."
"It is a quietly extraordinary piece of work,'' the newspaper wrote July 15. "I haven't been so enthralled by an apparently uninteresting subject since I read 'Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World.'"
Book Description
Here come the heels and hoodlums! It's an entertaining rogues' review, starring Batman's Joker, Dick Tracy's Flattop and Pruneface, Flash Gordon's Ming the Merciless, Spider-Man's Green Goblin, and hundreds more villains connoisseurs of comics have always loved to hate. Written especially for comic book collectors and nostalgia buffs, 500 Comic Book Villains is a chronicle of fictional wickedness that also touches on Arthurian legend and old-time radio and movies, in addition to the comics. It's an encyclopedia of evildoers that lists and profiles the major recurring villains who for generations have lurked in countless comic book illustrations, flaunting the iniquity that is always vanquished at story's end by heroes who represent truth, justice, law, order, and the American way. This terrific collection, compiled by comic book historian Mike Conroy, serves as a fine companion volume to his recently published 500 Great Comic Book Action Heroes, also available from Barron's. More than 300 color illustrations include reproductions of comic book covers and pages. Readers will also find a handy index and a bibliography.

Comic Book.......2007-03-17
I was very satisfied with the book, it was just what I was looking for and arrived in great shape and on time.
Resourceful.......2007-01-10
I purchased the books for resources and information in a genre I don't much about. The books had all the information I needed and more. And my younger son is reading it also.
A guide that is useful for anyone who buys comics regularly.......2006-01-06
Mystified by the multitude of arcane characters who have come out of the DC Universe woodwork during its latest "Crisis," I was pleased to find this book in Cody's, a bay area bookstore. So many villains have become heroes over the years that I have so far been able to identify 32 characters I had never noticed before. Expanded essays have been written about major characters, such as Marvel's Galactus and DC's Sinestro. Highly recommended.
Perfect introduction to villainy.......2005-10-01
I know a bit and a dabble about comic book villains. But not as much as I liked. So I figured 500 villains would be a goodly amount of knowledge. No you're not going to get power charts and really rather silly comparisons as to which pajama clad evildoer has a slightly stronger superstrength or laser vision. This gives you a run down of a HUGE number of villains, some I've never heard of, and probably never will again. Few complaints to be had, except that its rather silly to have a picture of Fin Fang Foom on the back and not have him featured anywhere. It has an index so you can trace out anyone you do know, and has an excellent article on Hitler, or as the book describes it, The Real World Supervillain.
not what i expected for.......2005-03-22
First of all i was looking for a book that describes each super heroe's style, character, super powers in detail, even i expected a scala or a chart showing his/her powers, intelligence, agility, dexterity out of say, 10 or 100 what ever. But none is available, just a brief explanation of how he /she is created, and etc. No description of his/her adventures, friends, the very popular speciality etc.
I bought this book with 2 other books "The superhero book" (visible ink production) and "comic book encyclopedia" (ron goulart) and none of them satisfied me.
However "comic book encyclopedia" (ron goulart)is the only one which provides all superheroes with "pictures" other books doesnt even provide picture for all characters but some mostly known ones.
i dont recommend this product for those who is familiar with the super heroes but to those who knows nothing about comics.

A truly horrible story is told very well in this memoir of family tragedy and recovery from life- threatening cancer. After leaving Saturday Night Live, comedienne Julia Sweeney was newly divorced and looking forward to a new life in Los Angeles. But her optimism was shattered when she learned that her brother had been diagnosed with cancer. He moved in with her, and before long Sweeney found out that she was suffering from a rare form of cervical cancer. The story of Sweeney, her brother, and her parents (whose moving in with her gave odd comic relief to all the health problems) is a moving tale, tragedy leavened with moments of good humor and uplifting insight.
Book Description
1995 was, for Julia Sweeney, a truly horrible year. She got a divorce (amicable), bought a small bungalow in Hollywood, and looked forward to a life that said, "Here dwells a happily single young woman!" But then the ax fell. Her younger brother Mike was diagnosed with terminal cancer and moved in with her. Her parents came to be with Mike--and moved in with her. Suddenly her tiny bungalow for one was filled to the rafters with Sweeneys. Here she was sleeping on her pull-out sofa bed while her father walked around, his Walkman on all day and her mother marveled at Julia's lack of such staples as stroganoff mixes. Every day was spent bringing Mike to and from chemotherapy, every evening watching "Chicago Hope" or "E.R." Julia was now on seriously intimate terms with the people she had spent half a lifetime growing up away from.Just weeks before Mike died, Julia was diagnosed with a rare form of cervical cancer--what Mike called her "sympathy cancer"--and within days of burying her brother, she underwent a radical hysterectomy, beginning her own journey through "the International House of Cancer." From these Job-like travails, Julia has written a remarkably funny and touching memoir about a family in extremis that manages to persevere with humor, grace, and love.
Customer Reviews:
Cute and Light.......2007-04-18
Julia Sweeny seems from interviews to be a likeable person, and her writing is similarly winsome. This autobiography is about turning lemons into lemonade, and Sweeny wrings humor from the chaos that ensues when family members band together for support in time of trouble. She does a good job of conveying both the sweetness and low-level eccentricity of her parents, who moved into her tiny California home to minister to Julia and her brother Mike, both of whom contracted cancer around the same time (Julia survived hers after a hysterectomy). That Julia and Mike referred to the home as the International House of Cancer, and obsessed over whether their cat had cancer, too, is an example of how they tried to positively spin the positively horrible.
My guess is that the anecdotes in "God Said `Ha!'" came across better in Sweeny's stage production than in this book, which is really light in content. The font is huge and the paragraphs spaced out widely, as if to help the story reach the minimum length required for print. Still, it's cleverly told, and nicely framed against a back story of how Sweeny and friend Quentin Tarantino unwittingly kicked off Sweeny's awful year of family turmoil by getting "lucky rocks" off the coast of Inish Turk, Ireland (Sweeny later returned hers).
As an aside, I first heard about this story during an interview Sweeny gave discussing, among other things, her atheism. Some of those seeds are planted in "God Said `Ha!'," but nowhere nearly as overtly as the title. In fact, Sweeny's tone in the book alternates between anger at her religion and admiration for nuns she remembered from Catholic school as sources of strength and quirky humor. The atheism must have come later after much soul-searching.
god said ha, i say nah........2007-03-09
it's got heart, but it gets a little too personal to remain of universal interest, unless you know julia sweeney or knew her brother. she is witty and has great delivery & timing, but i expected a bit more humor and a little less sappiness. i had heard an interview in which she discussed her take on religion and how she fell "out of touch" with (her) god, and the comments she made in the interview where awesome, thought provoking. i misunderstood that this dvd was similar to the "routine" she performed on the radio interview. the dvd would be a great way to ease into the mourning period if someone close to you was dying of cancer, but still active in many ways.
Thoroughly Enjoyable.......2007-01-22
Thoroughly enjoyable and insightful observation on the human condition. Poignantly demonstrates how fine the line is between comedy and tragedy, and how inseparable the two can be. Helps explain Ms. Sweeney's mood in her later fantastic work, "Letting Go of God>'
God Said Ha is Unforgettable.......2006-10-22
When I tell people to rent or buy God Said Ha, naturally they think I am being irreverent! Such is not the case.
This one woman show based on the true story of Julia and her family is poignant, hilarious and heartbreaking.
After Julia's divorce and relocation to California, privacy seems to be a hard thing to fine. Her brother had passed out in a public building and was rushed to the hospital. Not having medical insurance because of poor health, her brother had been going to the clinic where his disease was not diagnosed.
Pretty soon Julia's parents are living in her small house and chaos prevails. Not only is Julia taking care of her brother but dealing with the inevitable problems of too many people in too little a space.
Julia's brother is in the end stages of cancer. Before long Julia also develops cancers and requires a hysterctomy. Will the chaos ever end!
But Julia's great since of humor about her situation shines through the entire one woman show.
After seeing the show I also read the book. I would recommend this as a follow up of this great one woman show.
I must also add that without saying so, this is the best recommendation for legislation for health insurance for everyone!
touching, but.......2005-06-12
touching, but, she seems to lack in depth. interesting, though
i would recommend reading something by c.s. lewis
Book Description
Lines of Resistance is a major collection of little-known writings by and about Dziga Vertov, available here in English for the first time. While Vertov's uncompromising writings and his experimental features, such as Man with a Movie Camera, are known and discussed in the West, less is known about the other films he made in the 1920s, and still less about the response they provoked in the Soviet Union and abroad. Vertov liked to call his films and his essays "bombs"and indeed the public reaction to them was nothing short of explosive. This book follows the development of his work and opinions from 1917 to 1930, and chronicles contemporary reactions to them, including such prominent personalities as fellow directors Lev Kuleshov and Sergei Eisenstein, artists Aleksandr Rodchenko and Kazimir Malevich, and theorists Walter Benjamin and Siegfried Kracauer.

Customer Reviews:
An Incredible Book.......2006-05-29
An incredible book that compiles reviews of Vertov's work, Vertov's responses to reviews, Vertov's writing and speeches. This book covers almost everything about Vertov. Really worth the price if you are at all serious about Vertov or Soviet montage.

Book Description
This work presents 12 of the most volatile ethical issues facing the music industry. Real-life examples depict both sides of each controversy, and the list of resources provides tools for readers who wish to pursue the controversies further. Primary sources including court cases and excerpts from speeches help students build critical thinking skills in current issues, persuasive writing, and debate classes. Among the controversies noted is the growing oligopoly of a few multinational music companies and the independent labels that are attempting to survive this market dominance. Drug abuse and violence depicted in music is discussed, as is its influence on young listeners. These issues and many more are discussed in detail as the authors outline the controversial topics of the music industry.

Product Description
BeatWebCasinos.Com was the very first book on the market to deal with every issue of online gambling honestly and comprehensively. Though a little out of date now because of the vast growth of technology, the basic tenets are still accurate and contain valuable information. This book shows you how to qualify for juicy bonuses with minimum play, and then walk. By systematically hopping from promotion to promotion, the canny player can collect thousands of dollars with limited risk. No broken rules. No cheating. The basic method is simple, and the book provides the background necessary to help you stay out of trouble.
Customer Reviews:
Great!!!.......2003-07-03
Although the information in this book is now a bit dated because technology and new internet things keep going so fast, it's still worth getting. The only really outdated thing is parts where he says to play two or three times what you buy in for. These days the rules for online casinos state a minimum wagering requirement and it's all done by computers so there's no need for cover betting like that. Anyways, back to my review... GREAT BOOK!!!! BUY IT!!!!! I am a college kid and I made a nice easy two thousand dollars in a couple months from online casinos thanks largely to teh helpful info in this book. I averaged a little over 30 bucks an hour with all teh extra play and time spent researching-- but still-- it sure beats other forms or working! I got to refresh my basic strategy and play blackjack and make money! It was great! You aren't gonna get rich quick or quit your job, but for some easy extra cash, this book more than pays for itself!!!
Don't go online without it!.......2002-01-23
An indispensable guide to online gambling. Haywood does a good job of explaining the pitfalls online gamers take. He reviews the distinction between "dairy" and "beef" casinos, the various brands of software, gaming portals, ways to win money, and equally important, methods of wagering to avoid. He explains how you can make bonuses last for you and make money. My only complaint with the bookis that some of the casinos he lists at the end of the book as "dairy" casinos offer small or no bonuses. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend this to any prospective online gambler. Good job, Bill!
Most honest gambling book written. Excellent!.......2001-10-09
This is one of the most honest books I have ever read on a gambling subject. The author lays out what it takes to earn money off of casino sign-up bonuses. If you think that you can just sign up, play some hands of black jack and cash out the bonus, you would be well advised to read this book before continuing, it won't work. First you will need a credit card and the ability to pay the bill as soon as the Casino charges arrive, as the author so honestly puts it, playing for bonuses and paying cash advance and interest fees won't cut it. However, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.
1) The author shows you what type of records you will keep to dispute payment claims.(A lot)
2) How to spot unsavory casinos.
3) What games to play to minimize the house edge (BlackJack, Video Poker) as well a very useful introduction to the games and strategies. Assume you will lose money on these games but your loses will be offset by bonus money.
4) A very clear explaination of variance and how to size your bets, best I've read anywhere. Worth the price of the book by itself.
5) How to handle disputes with on-line casino's to get results.
6) How to bet so you look like a gambler than a match-player.
7) A sample diary of couple of days of betting, so you see if this is really how you want to spend your time.
8) The potential pitfalls in earning referral bonuses.
9) Just about everything else you need to get started.
It's not easy money, but I believe the author gives you all the information you need to judge for yourself if this is a business you want to get into. Believe me, after reading this book you will see that it is indeed a business. Wish I could give this book a higher rating.
great info.......2000-12-13
great info on how e-casinos work and how one can exploit their bonus offers. great for anyone who wants to invest and make some cash on the side. but if your lookin for a get rich quick book, this isnt for u.
The Only Internet Casino Book Worth Owning.......2000-11-17
Do not gamble at Internet casinos before reading this book!
Forget about all the other books about Ecasino gambling; Bill Haywood shows you how do it safely. Well researched and written by an experienced land-based casino and Internet gambler, Beatwebcasinos.com tells it like it is....

The phone is the most important tool most sales professionals will ever use, especially now that companies are cutting back travel budgets and other sales-related expenses. But few sales professionals have ever had any real training in how to sell over the phone; at most they are given a script and some talking points. Effective phone selling means tailoring the approach to each individual customer, and Selling to Anyone Over the Phone shows how to do it much better. This priceless tool will help salespeople: * build rapport * identify and adapt to personality types * generate excitement about a business or product * listen for information that will lead to a sale * control voice inflection and tone * consistently close more deals over the phone Customers are busier than ever and are being more and more selective in their purchases and business relationships. In a clear, reader-friendly tone, Selling to Anyone Over the Phone shows sellers how to develop truly exceptional phone skills and close more sales faster.

Great tool for a small business owner!.......2007-09-05
Owning a small creative shop, I'm having to juggle executing work and selling our services on the phone to prospective clients. Renee's book is constantly on my desk and I refer to it often to help keep my "pitch" focused, clear and concise. There are many deals I have closed which I can attribute directly to her methods.

Refreshing Your Phone Selling Skills.......2007-08-31
This book always serves as a reminder of the phone selling skills I possess, but may not use on a daily basis. Whenever I plan an important call, I retrieve this book from the tons of other books on this subject that I own and refresh and refocus my skills for the call at hand. This book gets right to the meat with useful information and a reminder of what most of us already know.
Do you talk on the phone? You NEED this book!.......2007-08-31
The biggest block for most salespeople is picking up the phone. With a wealth of useful information Walkup helps eliminate that fear and actually makes you look forward to it. Every person who sells - or talks - on the phone needs to read this book!
