1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this FACSIMILE edition!.......2006-02-23

This book arrived yesterday, "this book" being the "FACSIMILE edition" of the second edition. It's terrible. The reproduction isn't even as good as photocopying. The quality is so poor the illustrations are almost worthless: so dark no detail can be seen or so light little is left to see at all. This certainly vitiates its use for art instruction. Pages are out of alignment. There are supposed to be color plates, but they aren't reproduced at all, which means that this isn't even a complete facsimile of the original, and Amazon and the publisher should be charged with false advertizing. There is no indication of its facsimile nature in the book itself. So: Don't buy this book (especially at $55.60!); instead, look for a used copy.

4 out of 5 stars Very detailed but be warned about picture quality.......2000-02-29

Very good descriptions and instructions. But watch the picture quality and the packaging. It is nearly exactly like your instructor went out and just mass-photocopied it for the class. The cover is flimsy and rips easily, and the picture qualities inside tend to look very photocopied as well. But it shouldn't matter if all you are after is the quality content.

The best book on drawing fundamentals I've ever come across. As a visual artist and art instructor I spent two years searching for this book before it was reprinted. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

      Book Description

Fashion-agrave; la Mode is a sumptuous jewel of costume and fashion history seen through a dazzling parade of dolls that pop up on the page, accompanied by extraordinary interactive apparel, such as removeable fans, parasols, and shoes. The costumes in the book are created by Isabelle de Borchgrave and are based on her one-of-a-kind, hand-painted paper dresses. With short texts and numerous costumed figures that pop up in three dimensions, the book is organized chronologically into themes: Egypt and the beginning of costume, the Elizabethan period, 18th-century France, the Victorian Opera, the kimono, Chanel and the liberation of women's clothing, and fashion as art (Fortuny and Miyake). The text is written by Dorothy Twining Globus, Director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Also included are enthusiastic essays by such notable fashion authorities as Hubert de Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld, Myra Walker, and Sue North.

      5 out of 5 stars 5*****Pop-Up.......2005-10-25

This book is absolutely unbelievable. It was my first pop-up book and after purchasing this book I can't get enough pop-ups for my growing collection. If you're interested in fashion or just love to look at pretty books this is one for you.
Pop-up books are no longer just for children. I am constantly amazed at the workmanship that goes into one of these books. I never buy a used pop-up book, especially ones that say some of the pop-ups don't work. Then why buy it! Take my advice, buy this book and you'll be hooked on pop-ups too. I even bought pop-up Christmas cards this year and a 2006 calendar. Robert Sabuda is my all-time favorite pop-up artist.

      5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Education!.......2002-08-14

What a delightful book! The design engineers, who created this masterpiece, must be incredibly clever! This book is not only historically educational, it is fun. (Remember to be gentle--this is not for small children)

      4 out of 5 stars A(Fun!) Pop-Up Book For Grownups.......2002-03-15

I have always loved pop-up books and this one is no exception. Each page has an interesting new surprize. The illustrations are bright and well-rendered. The only quibble I have is that the ladies are a bit tricky to set up. In other words,be gentle or you might rip them a tiny bit(yes,it happened to me.) This book would make a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys fashion and or novelty books..

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but with problems........2002-01-22

      This book contains seven spreads:
      -Egypt
      -The Court of Elizabeth I
      -The Court of Marie Antoinette
      -At the Opera
      -The Art of the Kimono
      -Coco Chanel: Liberating the Ladies
      -Fashion as Art

My favorites are the kimono and art(Mariano Fortuny and Issey Miyake) spreads. I really love the Fotuny paper doll in her Delphos gown and loose fitting cloak, despite their being less than well rendered.

As a pop-up collector and hobbyist, I'm disappointed with this book. Though a great subject, the form and function of the pop-ups don't mesh well for me. There's an assortment of pull tabs, lift the the flaps, accordion fold outs and free standing pop ups that can be totally detached from the book. The many movable items are well organized by theme, but the parts are always catching on each other. I also had some trouble securing the freestanding stuff back into the book because it's not immediately obvious how the tabs and slots work with each other. For the price, I think the illustrations could have been better looking. In the end, the mish mash of the contents and sometimes ugly illustrations killed this book for me. I didn't hate it enough to go through the trouble of returning it, but it sits in its plastic wrapper collecting dust.

5 out of 5 stars Paper dresses to make us dream.......2002-01-21

Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave has made an amazing lifesize collection of period paper dresses which have been exhibited all over the world. Silks, brocades, taffetas and lace are recreated by painting on various types of paper. In this wonderfull popp-up book, some of the costumes come alive. Wonderful little details will enchant young girls, such as beautiful lace collars which unfold, a fan you can actually use, bags which open to reveal charming secrets and a model which steps out of the book onto the catwalk. A wonderful gift, full of inspiration and creativity.

3 out of 5 stars Where it all begins........2007-04-27

This collection, which reprints the first year (1979-80) of Lynn Johnston's now-classic strip, shows how far the Patterson family (and their readers) have come. Elly is a young stay-at-home mom, John has barely started his dental practice, Michael is barely out of toddlerdom and Elizabeth is still a baby. The strip focuses almost exclusively on this foursome, Johnston's ever-expanding cast of additional siblings, spouses, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and pets still well over the horizon.

The humor itself is broader and more self-consciously "gaggy" than it would become, with Johnston relying on Erma Bombeck-style observations that had already become cliches by 1980. There's little of the dramatic narratives and wry observations that would later characterize the strip. By the same token, Johnston's artwork is less assured and a little more "cartoony" than what we're now used to. This is a comic strip that's still very much finding its legs, and its voice.

That caveat aside, if you want to know how the Patterson clan got to where they are now, this is the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning chapters of a great comicstrip soap opera.......2003-10-12

This 1981 classic collection of Lynn Johnston's For Better Or Worse syndicated comicstrip soap opera is a wonderful place for FBoW readers to start.

Travel back in time to when Elly is a young married stay-at-home mom with a clueless spouse, a five-year-old Michael, and infant Elizabeth. Here can be seen the early development of the characters we have all grown up with. Lynn Johnston sees humor in the struggles and problems of a married mom in the early 1980's. The times have changed, but the problems are much the same.

The action is much easier to follow when it is a tight nuclear family rather than the extended four generation clan of today. Also Lynn's humor is much more on the surface as we see her struggle with what it means to be a married stay-at-home mom through the cartoon Elly and her attempts to find herself while raising two children and keeping up a home.

4 out of 5 stars Ever had the "One More Washload Blues"?.......2002-10-30

You know what it is - that last washload before you can settle down for the evening, that last drink of water before bedtime, that bone tired feeling that comes from caring for children, that feeling that they will always need you to bathe them and put them to bed and you will never ever be able to go to the bathroom in peace....or maybe you don't and you want to see what it's like. I recommend this book highly to give you that insight.

I must confess I am a fan of Lynn Johnston's "For Better or For Worse Seiries" and I _have_ had the "one more washload blues" more than once. It's a great beginning book to introduce you to the characters that Lynn follows faithfully in her daily comic strip. As it's fascinating to watch children grow into adults and see how they turn out, it's wonderful to see how stories get played out in Lynn Johnston's world.
So if you've ever had the "one more washload blues" or you know somebody who has, get this book. It will bring a smile to the weary person that suffers this fate - and it's cheaper than Prozac, no visits to the doctor and they can read it as often as they like;)

2 out of 5 stars Better to start your FBorFW collection elsewhere.......2000-07-12

This is the first "For Better or For Worse" collection, and it's pretty clear that Lynn Johnston was still just finding her voice and style in most of these strips. It's pretty fascinating for serious fans to see the oldest strips, but there's not a lot to recommend this book beyond the historical value. My biggest problem with this collection is that the characters aren't very consistent with what they soon became. John in particular is chauvinistic, insensitive, dumb...and in general, not very funny. Sure, he's always had an element of cluelessness to him, but usually that's only in the context of a man who loves and respects his wife and family. Not here. In fact, it's interesting to note that in the three FBorFW anthologies, the strips drawn from this era either don't feature John at all or play down the personality we're treated to here. That makes me think Johnston might have decided there was some excess in these strips. I didn't find myself caring about the Pattersons as well as laughing at them the way I usually do. Also, there are few multi-strip stories here; mostly it's a one-off gag with each strip. Which is okay, except that Johnston is sooooo good at the longer stories, of course they're missed. To wrap up, it's pretty simple. If you're a serious fan, you'll want this book. If you love battle-of-the-sexes jokes, you'll definitely want this book. If you're hoping for more early stories of the Pattersons we've come to know and love...look elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars These Are Always Good.......2000-03-27

I feel like a part of the For Better Or For Worse Family. Keep the books coming Lynn.

        Book Description

        Where there's a CODE there's a COD ...

In the not so distant past, a man had a Very Cunning Theory which he wrote down in a book, and it proved to be very popular indeed. In the very distant past, a man was born who had a wife, who had a child, who grew up and had children in turn, and so there was a bloodline stretching to today. And Leonardo da Vinci knew all about it and recorded it in a painting for everyone to see, despite lots of Bad People trying to cover up the whole thing. And the man with the Very Cunning Theory figured all this out from lots of clues and pictures that Leonardo da Vinci had cunningly concealed, and then published it for everyone to see.

But then it turned out that this Very Cunning Theory was Not So Cunning After All because it wasn't true. Not even remotely. Not even a tiny bit likely. Which is where this book comes in.

Because it turns out that although Leonardo da Vinci didn't know anything at all about a holy bloodline extending to the present day, he knew a very great deal indeed about what cod really are, and that sinister knowledge is only now coming to light ...

3 out of 5 stars High hopes, not product.......2006-10-05

The title's fantastic! I was sure the book would be too. However, though it's farsical and certainly spoofs Da Vinci Code (which I loved), it's just not funny. Better try my book instead.

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of time.......2006-02-09

If ever there was a book that wes ripe for parody it's The Da Vinci Code. Unfortunately this book, The Da Vinci Cod, is a very poorly written, very poorly ploted sad substitute. Don't waste your time nor money on it. It is I'm afraid a greatly disappointing failure.

I get the feeling that this failure is due in degree to--this may sound odd in talking about a parody, but it is an impression I have--taking the book The Da Vinci Code too seriously. Great parodies are achieved by pointing out the absurdities of their subject matter. This book, the Da Vinci Cod, seems to miss that altogether

1 out of 5 stars Not so funny after all..........2006-01-10

Sorry if I disappoint some potential fans but this book is not funny. Ok, there are some scarce good passages, but that's all. It didn't really go anywhere, just a pointless bunch of situations and stupidity. Don't waste your time nor money.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible For A New Age!.......2005-10-31

An entertaining explanation of the existence of everything. This makes more sense than the traditional bible which also contains fiction mixed with fact; so it's just as important. Don't forget that fiction has, in fact, become fact on many occasions throughout history, first conjured by the mind and then made into reality! I'm sure we'll hear from the naysayers with their talk of halibut or perch, but Don Brine (aka Adam Roberts) has definitely done his schoolwork and spawned a masterpiece. If you like Monty Python type humor, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

        Book Description

For most actors, the idea of going to India for eight weeks to act in a Bollywood epic shot in the middle of a desert would send them scurrying back to their agent asking for other work. But not Chris England. He runs his own cricket team, and he would be representing his country at his favorite sport. This is a cricket tour diary with a difference, as Chris England charts the progress of the film from his audition in a London park to the film's release 18 months later.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars India 1, British Raj 0.......2004-03-11

When the Bollywood legend Aamir Khan decided to make a film about a cricket match in India during the British Raj, a match in which the down-trodden Indians vanquish the English imperialists, he went to London to recruit British actors who could (at least in theory) play the game. Hence Chris England and colleagues are taken to the remote town of Bhuj in Gujerat, uncomfortably close to the border with Pakistan.

This book is an account of the shooting of the film ("Lagaan"), the trials and tribulations of being a bit-part actor and of surviving the ravages of provincial India (everything from the difficulty of getting news from home to being followed by crowds on a beach when trying to find a private place to find relief from diarrhoea). There is real poignancy at the end of the book, as Gujerat was hit by a massive earthquake shortly after filming ceased - essentially Chris England's description of the Bhuj is of a town that was destroyed.

Inevitably with such a book, you get more out of it if you have some knowledge of cricket, but "Lagaan" was such a world-wide hit (my Indian friends virtually demanded that I watch it) that this book might appeal despite that.

This compact volume (73 pp) gives a wonderful introduction to the practice of playing the baroque flute, recorder or oboe. Although coments on fingerings may not apply to instruments produced today, all remarks on tounging and ornamentaion are very valuable. Book Description

Here's a wonderful introduction to music. Kids learn to read notes, count time, and master basic fingering techniques on the recorder. An actual recorder is packaged with the book so boys and girls can start learning right away. Lessons in the book have large, easy-to-read music staffs, cartoon-style illustrations, and easy-to-follow instructions. It's easy to learn how to play the recorder, especially if students have a good instruction manual. Here's both a fine instruction book and a good soprano recorder made of high-quality plastic.

5 out of 5 stars Collection of harmonious games by all-time great.......2002-05-31

According to his great rival Botvinnik, Smyslov was the world's best player from 1953 to 1957, although he held the title for only the last of those years. He also kept up great strength when most players have retired. This collection shows why. Smyslov outplayed a string of strong players with masterpiece games. His endgame skill was unsurpassed, and he also had an extremely sharp eye for combinations that took even the best opponents completely by surprise.

4 out of 5 stars Smyslov outdoes himself........2002-04-02

I have this book. I am a Life-Master at the game. I teach chess for a living.

Smyslov is one of the greatest players who ever lived. His craft as an annotator sets himself in a class maybe all by himself. (How many other writers have held the World Championship?)

Simply put this is one of the best books in my library. I have over 2000 chess books, (not counting pamphlets) and this is easily in the Top 100, maybe even the Top 10.

Want to improve your game? Want to study tactics? Positional chess? Endings? It is all in here, 125 of the best annotated games you will ever see. While Smyslov lacks the ability to touch the lowest rating classes like Chernev, anyone who studies these games carefully could not help but improve. Smyslov here probably spent much more time writing this book than you will ever spend reading it ... and it shows.

5 out of 5 stars In search of harmony........2000-03-02

His love of music explains the title of Smyslov's autobiography, V poiskakh harmonii (1979) - "in search of harmony". An enlarged and modified English version is 125 Selected Games (1983).

It would be very difficult to read more than a couple of pages without being challenged on your sales approach or to be reminded of a proven solution to a problem. Managers of sales and marketing operations will find creative ways to approach their craft as well as those devices and methods that have always worked (and always will). Written in bite-sized chunks, you might find it helpful to simply meditate on one concept per day. They all apply to the successful management of sales and account management. If you apply these principles, you will be successful. It's as simple as that.
