    Book Description

From the advent of Fauvism to the development of Dada, the early part of this century saw a series of avant-garde movements in European literature, music, and painting, which fundamentally re-examined the languages of the arts. Early Modernism is a uniquely integrated introduction to the great movements of this period. In contrast to the overly literary bias of previous studies of Modernism it highlights the interaction between the arts and the interlinking nature of the developments made by Matisse, Picasso, Schoenberg, Eliot, Apollinaire, Marinetti, Benn and many others. The resulting changes and radical new techniques such as atonality, cubism, and collage, are set in the context both of the art that preceded them and a profound shift in ideas. Theories of the unconscious, the association of ideas, primitivism, and reliance upon upon an expressionist intuition led to a reshaped conception of personal identity, and the book examines the representation of the Modernist self in the work of figures including Joyce, Mann, Conrad, and Stravinsky. Lavishly illustrated, Early Modernism provides an elegant and incisive guide to this momentous period in the history of European art.

          Book Description

In the bestselling tradition of The Lazlow Letters and Letters from a Nut, screenwriter Paul Davidson has been firing off humble but humorous letters to Fortune 500 companies to find answers to such hot-button questions like why hasn’t Minute Maid begun to sell an all pulp, juice-free product yet, and whether it’s safe to microwave a bowl of Marshmallow Fluff on high for ten minutes. And the funny thing is . . . consumer-care departments everywhere have been writing back to him, addressing his queries with deadpan seriousness.

Collecting dozens of selections from Davidson’s funniest correspondence, Consumer Joe uncovers why a box of fifty envelopes only contained forty-seven and how colorblind people are supposed to tell whether their Ziploc baggies (“yellow and blue makes green”) are properly sealed, while making numerous product-improvement suggestions along the way (such as adding Tuna Melt flavor to the Jamba Juice product line).

Taking aim at the increasingly advertising-sponsored society, Consumer Joe features utterly absurd but irresistible missives to companies ranging from Barnes & Noble and Fed-Ex to Southwest Airlines and Taco Bell. Full of kvetches we all can relate to, Consumer Joe is poised to become the patron saint of every beleaguered shopper.

We were getting something to eat on our honeymoon and my husband picked up this book. He cracked up! I made a mental note that it would make a great git for him later on. After a little hunting, I found it. It is a perfect book for the sarcastic person. He still pulls it out every once in a while for a chuckle.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Consumer's letters represent mainstream America.......2007-06-19

As the corporate customer service writer featured on the book's 49th page, I was surprised when David Paulson contacted me a second time to say that his November 6 letter was actually a "test," so to speak. To those working in the airline industry during the dark days and months that followed 9/11, some of the questions that passengers asked--and the scenarios about which they (and he) wrote--were especially mind-boggling. But, when now re-reading Mr. Paulson's letter (on Page 48 of Consumer Joe), his concerns about tweezers are honestly no more outlandish than some seriously written letters that passengers send to airlines on an average day--which only goes to show the mindset of the traveling public!

Consumer Joe is good, lighthearted reading that makes me chuckle whenever I open it. Thanks, David!

This is the funniest, wittiest and original book I've read in ages. With so much mundane humor out there it's refreshing to see some fresh and original humor. I read this book in one sitting, laughing out loud. Paul Davidson has a rare gift. I look forward to his next endeavor.

4 out of 5 stars An idelible character.......2003-10-09

Sure the letters are funny, but the best thing about Consumer Joe is the guy who ostensibly wrote them, David Paulson. In him, Paul Davidson has created a vivid comedic character who writes with a hilarious combination of outrage and naivete as he huddles in his Beverly Hills apartment with (if his letters are to be believed) several cats (one of them injured), a thrill-seeking dog, and stacks of coupons sent to appease his urgent need for justice. Letter-by-letter, we learn more about this person and his equally eccentric extended family, until he becomes a fully-realized creation reminscent of Rob Long's brilliantly funny agent character in "Conversations with my Agent." Though the letters in the book gave me more than a few hearty laughs, discovering the character of David Paulson was an unexpected pleasure of reading this book.

          Book Description

Hollywood moviemaking is one of the constants of American life, but how much has it changed since the glory days of the big studios? David Bordwell argues that the principles of visual storytelling created in the studio era are alive and well, even in today's bloated blockbusters. American filmmakers have created a durable tradition--one that we should not be ashamed to call artistic, and one that survives in both mainstream entertainment and niche-marketed indie cinema. Bordwell traces the continuity of this tradition in a wide array of films made since 1960, from romantic comedies like Jerry Maguire and Love Actually to more imposing efforts like A Beautiful Mind. He also draws upon testimony from writers, directors, and editors who are acutely conscious of employing proven principles of plot and visual style. Within the limits of the "classical" approach, innovation can flourish. Bordwell examines how imaginative filmmakers have pushed the premises of the system in films such as JFK, Memento, and Magnolia. He discusses generational, technological, and economic factors leading to stability and change in Hollywood cinema and includes close analyses of selected shots and sequences. As it ranges across four decades, examining classics like American Graffiti and The Godfather as well as recent success like The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, this book provides a vivid and engaging interpretation of how Hollywood moviemakers have created a vigorous, resourceful tradition of cinematic storytelling that continues to engage audiences around the world.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great textbook.......2006-11-05

David Bordwell is one of the most widely read film scholars around, and not without reason: he writes with ease and ellegance, his insights are often deep and almost always relevant, his starting points are usually essential for better understanding cinematic art. Is he always right?
Of course not, he is not a religious profet or Jacques Lacan (Oops!).

However he usually describes the area of his study quite well, cites references and data he would like you to check in order to see whether he is right and, well, does serious scholarly work. Not a small achievent in a fastly globalizing (and fastly "mcdonaldsizing") academic community of cultural gurus who know everything about everything... Therefore, when you disagree with him (as I sometimes do), you usually know what your are disagreeing about and why.

This book is another Bordwell's insightful contribution to the study of American and global cinema (styles in cinema are basically more international/global than in literature; probably less than in classical music or jazz), explaining how contemporary cinema develops from older stylistical patterns. From the era of silent movies or Slavko Vorkapic's experiments for Frank Capra to modern-era (greatly digitalized) blockbusters, Hollywood's manners and procedures of telling a story can be compared with quite a fruitfull result.
Ofcourse, simple description of stylistic trend or procedure does not directly serve as a proof of aesthetic value, but the subject of this book is, basically, style, not aesthetic value or anything else that can be connected to (and is intertwined on many levels with) style.
This book is equally useful for scholars, teachers and (thanks to his nice style and clear argumentation) students of cinema and all other educated art lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody Does it Better!.......2006-10-25

Like the author's other works, this is a highly meticulous and empirical study of the way contemporary Hollywood films function. Paying close attention to selected films by intensive frame analysis, Bordwell calls into question many contemporary "sibboleths" concerning the status of "post-Hollywood" which he reveals as having more connections with its classical counterpart than most critics believe. His attention to fine detail and references to "American Cinematographer" and screenwriting manuals reveal that he has really done his homework. He challenges his contemporaries to do likewise before they engage in problematic "post" judgements whether they be on the realm of postmodernism, post-colonialism, and post- anything which may become academic equivalents of those formerly fashionable platform shoes or flared trousers that often date episodes of the 1970s British cop series THE SWEENEY.

The references to contemporary Hong Kong cinema and analysis of films such as Johnny To's A HERO NEVER DIES are also valuable components of this book. Like DRAGNET's Sergeant Joe Friday, Bordwell insists that we supply facts based on viewing the evidence ourselves. We should not ignore important empirical aspects before we begin to make meanings that may eventually prove to be non-substantial. Those who choose to avoid the well-researched findings of this book should be issued with speeding tickets and forced to attend a scholarly version of "community service" or "boot camp" involving the detailed viewings of as many films as possible, reading interviews with film directors, and studying important journals such as AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER. This is equally important for those newly converted "film experts" in English Departments of postmodernist persuasion who recently discover Laura Mulvey's 1975 essay on "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" and regard it as a "gospel" truth which remains unaltered today! These feelings are more akin to non-linguistic theological studies and not the highly textual, linguistic based explorations of biblical and near eastern studies that relay on studies in pre-semitic studies, Canaanite, Aramaic, and Arabic studies to reveal key empirical structures influencing "holy writ."

This is another indispensable work by an important scholar that every serious professor and student should learn from even if it only involves better interpretation and a more professional "making of meaning."

If African Americans are, as some have proposed, a "nation within a nation," then the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is their anthem. Written in 1900 by the brilliant civil rights leader and author James Weldon Johnson and his brother J. Rosamond Johnson, it was the official song of the NAACP from the 1920s through the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s. During that time, it was sung by millions of black children and even printed in family bibles. This book, edited by NAACP Chairman Julian Bond and scholar Sondra Kathryn Wilson, celebrates the song through the testimonials of 100 prominent black and white legislators, politicians, educators, writers, and performers, whose "essays build a multifaceted narrative that elucidates the value and profundity of a song that has vibrantly endured for one hundred years."

Filmmaker Gordon Parks writes that the song "soars from the depths of our history," and that "it urges us to keep moving on until equality and freedom surround us with the oneness of the sky." For music icon Quincy Jones, the Johnson brothers "gave us this noble song to soothe our emotional wounds while, simultaneously, lifting our spirits." Ilyasah Shabazz, Malcolm X's daughter, says the composition "still serves as a reminder of our ancestors and our historical experiences in America." Testimonies from Norman Lear, Bill Clinton, Maya Angelou, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters add further proof of the power and passion of this song, which speaks to the highest ideals of American democracy. --Eugene Holley Jr.

          Book Description

"A group of young men in Jacksonville, Florida, arranged to celebrate Lincoln's birthday in 1900. My brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, and I decided to write a song to be sung at the exercise. I wrote the words and he wrote the music. Our New York publisher, Edward B. Marks, made mimeographed copies for us and the song was taught to and sung by a chorus of five hundred colored school children.

"Shortly afterwards my brother and I moved from Jacksonville to New York, and the song passed out of our minds. But the school children of Jacksonville kept singing it, they went off to other schools and sang it, they became teachers and taught it to other children. Within twenty years it was being sung over the South and in some other parts of the country. Today, the song, popularly known as the Negro National Hymn, is quite generally used.

"The lines of this song repay me in elation, almost of exquisite anguish, whenever I hear them sung by Negro children."

          —James Weldon Johnson, 1935

Pasted into Bibles, schoolbooks, and hearts, "Lift Every Voice and Sing," written by J. Rosamond Johnson and James Weldon Johnson in 1900, has become one of the most beloved songs in the African American community—taught for years in schools, churches, and civic organizations. Adopted by the NAACP as its official song in the 1920s and sung throughout the civil rights movement, it is still heard today at gatherings across America.

James Weldon Johnson's lyrics pay homage to a history of struggle but never waver from a sense of optimism for the future—"facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won." Its message of hope and strength has made "Lift Every Voice and Sing" a source of inspiration for generations.

In celebration of the song's centennial, Julian Bond and Sondra Kathryn Wilson have collected one hundred essays by artists, educators, politicians, and activists reflecting on their personal experiences with the song. Also featuring photos from historical archives, Lift Every Voice and Sing is a moving illustration of the African American experience in the past century.

With contributors including John Hope Franklin, Jesse Jackson, Maya Angelou, Norman Lear, Maxine Waters, and Percy Sutton, this volume is a personal tribute to the enduring power of an anthem. "Lift Every Voice and Sing" has touched the hearts of many who have heard it because its true aim, as Harry Belafonte explains, "isn't just to show life as it is but to show life as it should be."

5 out of 5 stars A Song for All Americans.......2001-03-18

In 1900 James Weldon Johnson, and his brother J. Rosamond Johnson, wrote a song for a chorus of five hundred black school children, in Jacksonville, Florida, to sing in celebration of Lincoln's birthday. The song was originally published by mimeograph, and intended only for that year's remembrance of President Lincoln. Yet, the black school children of Jacksonville kept singing. ...and because the song reflected the truth of the black experience in America, the chorus swelled from five hundred to millions of voices. Today "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is alternately referred to as the "Black National Anthem"

Deeply patriotic, and clinging to a vision of an America healed of the scourge of racism, the brothers Johnson answered Francis Scott Key's anthem with realism, pathos, and hope. Whereas Key's song speaks of the external, military enemy, the Johnsons' chorus speaks of the more insidious internal enemy of racism. Whereas Key wrote of liberty already won and now demanding defense, the Johnsons wrote of liberty delayed, eventually promised, seen, but not yet fully acheived.

In this anthology, the editors give us an history of this deeply moving piece of music, and a chronology of its authors. They also give us one hundred short reponses to the song -- almost meditations -- by Americans of every skin hue. Finally, the text includes a pictoral display of the 20th century, American, black experience which is a treasure in and of itself.

This is more than a coffee table book. This is a book for all Americans to read and re-read: for in this text are planted the seeds of tolerance and understanding which our nation so desperately requires.

Julian Bond and Sondra K. Wilson have blazed a trail in editing this book. Mostly well-known Americans, but also some hidden gems, share with the reader what the Johnson brothers' song means to them.

And it means a lot to a cross section of Americans. One friend noted that if you read the book in one setting, as she did, you get a clear sense of how African American families taught their children to be revolutionaries. These children were taught about their history, and they were given the tools to dream and do something about their future. They had no choice; they had to march on until victory was won! And they did, from shacks in Mississippi, middle-class homes in Chicago and upper-class environments in Hollywood (where they often still could not get a decent meal in a restaurant), they were taught to fight for their freedom. They marched on--on buses, at "white only" lunch counters, over bridges with dogs and police daring them to cross, down lonely country roads with the KKK looking on--and though hundreds of marches, they fulfilled the dreams of their ancestors.

One of the real treasures of the book, besides the wonderful essays, is that one gets the sense, through exquisite historical photos, of how broad the African American experience is and continues to be. There are poor black women chopping cotton, and black men being killed. But there are also photograpshs of young black women on horseback in the 1950s, muslim women at a mosque, photographs of Muhammad Ali, James Weldon Johnson and his wife looking lovingly at each other, proud black women on their way to church and young children all dressed up to perform in some special show for their parents. These photos give you a sense that despite the hardship, we might be making some progress--that the race is okay and might survive.

I would like to thank Bond and Wilson for sharing with us the best of our culture. As one NY Amsterdam News' reviewer noted, "If you breathe, you should buy this book." It is a perfect gift for any occasion.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for every African -American family.......2000-12-10

I admit that I intended to purchased this book simply because my grandmother, Jeanne Belle Osby Goodwin is one of the featured 100 voices. But as I read through some of the other essays, the song and the thousands of voices that I have heard sing its choruses filled my heart and mind with such glory. This book became a must have book for my loved ones. "Sing a song full of the hope..." We are a people of many trials and tribulations. This song, and the written words of the 100 serve as potent reminders that we can,do and will persevere- to sweet victory!

4 out of 5 stars Interstellar Players (Classic Battletech).......2006-07-10

The book was filled with interesting information about the fictional universe of Battletech. Anyone who likes Battletech game/history sourcebooks should find it of interest. Interstellar Players presents a different take on how the fictional history of the Inner Sphere unfolded from that presented in the various House Sourcebooks.

          4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-11-30

I would really rate this 3 1/2 stars, but it's closer to 4 than to 3. Interesting book. More usefull to those who play the Mechwarrior RPG rather than tabletop Battletech. Still, I enjoyed it/

Man was born on many planets. The highest order of Man lives on the doorstep to Heaven

On a planet called Juniper, only a few hundred years have passed since they entered intergalactic society. The Junipeans traverse the heavens in Lightstars, gargantuan, fire-spewing crafts that leave a signature nuclear wake.

When a mysterious and intriguing series of events occurs on a nearby planet that may hold the key to a superior method of travel, they risk expulsion, and send someone to find out what has happened.

That planet is Earth. The year is 2024.

          5 out of 5 stars A surreal treat!.......2000-10-30

Science fiction should transport the reader into a world that is wondrous and slightly familiar. Joseph Fullam's The Players does that, but with a twist.

(The main character) encounters all kinds of bizarre beings and problems, giving The Players a disturbing, surreal atmosphere. Fullam makes Earth seem more alien than the alien planets that are the typical science fiction fodder. He does this so well that it leaves the reader in a wide-eyed state of discomfort and awe. It is almost as if Dali wrote the last half of this novel through Fullam's hand, and it couldn't be any better.

The Players is a delightful treat in a genre that is often burdened with pretentious writers who lack storytelling skills. Fullam, on the other hand, gives his novel an oddly spiritual tone that begs for attention.

5 out of 5 stars Fundraisers, buy this book.......2007-09-21

In fundraising, the basic exercise is called "making your case." Which is, you make an argument that persuades prospective donors to invest their philanthropic dollars in your particular mission or vision -- you hope. True, Jerry Weissman's book is intended for a traditional business audience; he learned his secrets coaching companies like Yahoo prepare for their IPOs. But don't be fooled by his for-profit credentials: this book is all about making your case effectively. And fundraisers desperately need to know the stuff that Jerry Weissman reveals here: how to tell your story so compellingly that buy-in is virtually guaranteed. If you're a fundraiser entering a capital campaign, save yourself the false starts: buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars The experience of presenting written in this book.......2007-09-13

Excellent book. It's well written, with very good examples. You will recognize your mistakes and as myself you will probably improve your presenting skills.

5 out of 5 stars Best public speaking book ever.......2007-09-03

This book is amazing to me because my employer requires that I read one book on communication skills/presentation skills each quarter. Well, I've worked for for more than five years so I've read more than 20 such books. The thing that shocked me about this book was how much new information it contained that I had never seen elsewhere. This books is really great for the long time public speaker... you'll get a lot out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Loaded with useful information.......2007-05-14

This book is loaded with helpful advice on creating a great presentation. Even if you think you are great at presentations, this book will help you become even better.

5 out of 5 stars The Key To Beyond Bullet Points.......2007-01-13

Do you want to make presentations described by Cliff Atkinson in Beyond Bullet Points but are having trouble with using storyboards and composing Acts I, II, & III? Jerry Weismman in Presenting to Win provides the structure to enable you to do that. Jerry is a craftsman and he presents his concepts very clearly and convincingly - he can actually do what he tells you to do! I provide training workshops some of which span three days. Each workshop is customized and I utilize PowerPoint to provide the visual part of the presentation. I haven't been able to totally eliminate bullet points for a presentation of that length - though I have dramatically reduced the number of them! Jerry's techniques for understanding and improving the mechanics of your presentation cover the last half of the book and have been equally valuable to me as the story telling portion which the first half.
If implementing Beyond Bullet Points is giving you trouble but you are convinced that the concept is the right one; then Presenting to Win is essential. Regardless, Presenting to Win can help you make clear, powerful presentations that enable your participants get to Point B!
