    Book Description

Imperial Manchu support and patronage of Buddhism, particularly in Mongolia and Tibet, has often been dismissed as cynical political manipulation. Empire of Emptiness questions this generalization by taking a fresh look at the huge outpouring of Buddhist painting, sculpture, and decorative arts Qing court artists produced for distribution throughout the empire. It examines some of the Buddhist underpinnings of the Qing view of rulership and shows just how central images were in the carefully reasoned rhetoric the court directed toward its Buddhist allies in inner Asia. The multilingual, culturally fluid Qing emperors put an extraordinary range of visual styles into practice--Chinese, Tibetan, Nepalese, and even the European Baroque brought to the court by Jesuit artists. Their pictorial, sculptural, and architectural projects escape easy analysis and raise questions about the difference between verbal and pictorial description, the ways in which overt and covert meaning could be embedded in images through juxtaposition and collage, and the collection and criticism of paintings and calligraphy that were intended as supports for practice and not initially as works of art.

"All scholars of the Qianlong era, of early modern Mongol studies, of Tibetan Buddhism, and of pre-modern China studies will find the book indispensable." --- Pamela Crossley, Dartmouth College

"More than any other art historical study to appear recently, this book expands our view of the visual culture of late imperial China by highlighting its ethnic complexity." --- Marsha Haufler, University of Kansas

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-23

I had hoped that this would be an interesting book providing a new perspective on dressing if you have a "Rubenesque" figure, but it was just the same old bull about how you need to wear enormous shapeless clothing to create a "flattering, slim" silhouette. Note to the world: enormous, shapeless clothes do not make you look slim, they make you look enormous and shapeless. In addition, even though this book was published in 1999, all of the suggested outfits look like they're from the 80s. No wonder it's out of print. I am giving the book 2 stars rather than 1, however, because it does have some nice appreciative descriptions of body types that aren't anorexic models. At least it was a cheap book...

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing new look at beauty.......2003-04-17

I really enjoyed this book because it celebrated many different body types, showing how best to enhance each one. It can be frustrating that today there is such a narrow definition of "beauty" and this book goes beyond that.

I also enjoyed the concept of labeling each body type by the artist that celebrated that shape, as opposed to fruit labels, i.e., "pear" or "apple". For instance, the Rubens shape is all-over voluptuous and generous. That doesn't fit today's "ideals" but why shouldn't one be able to look lovely just the same?

I myself felt like I was somewhere in between Modigliani (very slender above the waist and curvy below) and a Renoir (similar shape, but more solid above the waist)...it depends on my weight. In any case, some of the same styles apply to both body shapes.

I can say that following the advice of empire-waist dresses and dresses with bolero jackets for the Modigliani shape has garnered me compliments, both from my husband (a spontaneous, "Wow! That looks really nice on you!") and from others. And that feels great.

3 out of 5 stars Some good advice here.......2003-04-11

The author includes detailed charts and drawings, which are indeed helpful. My problem with the book is the rigid categories for body types. My type is almost a Picasso, but deviates from some of the Picasso's key characteristics -- rendering most of the advice for this type useless. I'm somewhat of a Pop Art, too, and the advice for this type contradicted much of that for the Picasso, so I ended up feeling confused. I suggest checking for this book in your local library to determine if it's a worthwhile purchase for you.

5 out of 5 stars An Elegant Solution.......2002-05-23

Finally a book on fashion that makes sense..Margaux has given me the tools I need to go to the store and shop for me. I went through my closet and took all the styles she recomends for my body type and she is right. I was trying to figure out if it was the lable, price, or store that was causing me problems with fit. I am looking forward to another book by Margaux.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as all that.......2001-06-12

I was actually somewhat disappointed with this book after having read all the rave reviews. My basic disappointment is that my body type apparently doesn't exist. I don't fit clearly into any of the six catagories that the book outlines and so was left trying to guess which things in two categories applied to me.

The book does have a lot of useful drawings that can help choose appropriate clothing but I would much rather have had things organized by groups like tips for full hips or petite women. Having to try to cram myself into a category that I didn't really fit in made it more work than it should have been and left me wondering which tips to mix and match.

      Book Description

A twisted take on Homer's classical Greek epic, The Odyssey, brought to you by Peter Milligan (X-Statix) and Tank Girl co-creator and artist, Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz), the Tank Girl Odyssey makes a few "minor" changes to the original...

...Booga, husband of Tank Girl, is being wooed by countless Hollywood producers, and without his wife there his resolve is crumbling. Tele, their TV-headed son, knows that he must contact his mother... setting off a chain of events that will see Tank Girl face death itself, the siren call of gothic rock, a cyclopean hotel proprietor, and a host of other scenes and characters from The Odyssey... given the — ahem — "idiosyncratic" Tank Girl treatment!

1 out of 5 stars Black & White and produced as cheap paperback.......2006-08-17

Waste of money and time, the art is so reduced in size its shameful, and without color on cheap paper trying to read the dialogue is difficult.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not in color.......2002-08-02

This story tells how Jean Grey became Phoenix, but is a small paperback book in black and white. The whole story (3 comics) is told in a flashback in X-Men: Phoenix Rising. This book is helpful if you want to see the original comics, but you'll get the same story in color along with the rescue and return of Jean Grey if you read X-Men: Phoenix Rising. I recommend that over this.

4 out of 5 stars Enter The Phoenix.......2000-01-20

In Enter The Phoenix we witness the first (?) time (chronologicaly at least) Jean Grey merging with the Phoenix, a cosmic force so great that few but the creator can match it. My copy of the story is one of the "Marvel Masterworks" books (Uncanny X-men 101 - 110) and starts with the X-Men crashing a Space Shuttle into Jamaica Bay. During the flight in space the shuttle has passed through a solar storm with very high radiation. With a scientist and the rest of the X-men sheltered in a radiation chamber, Jean Grey, then Marvel Girl, pilots the shuttle through. Though it should have meant certain death, Jean merges with the phoenix force and survives. (Actually her nearly dead body is placed in a healing cocoon at the botom at the bay and it is the phoenix "borrowing" Jean's form that emerges from the waters in front of her astonished team- mates. See "Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Inferno" for further details.) Jean is placed in a hospital for recovery and the X-Men is sent on a vacation to Cassidy Keep (Sean Cassidy aka Banshee's ancestral home in Ireland). I wont spoil the fun by telling you everything that happens though, so I think I'll stop here. The plot, written by Claremont,is very good but not the best he has done. Dave Cockrum's art (at the end John Byrne takes over) is also very good and not like todays misproportioned characters. What I like most with the story is Claremonts ability to mix fast paced action with deeply emotional pasages like when Scott in the hospital finds out that Jean's going to survive. His sense of epic melodrama is no doubt one of the major reasons X-Men was/is so popular (altough he sometimes overdo it.) In this book Jean Grey/Phoenix almost Single-handedly saves the universe (though the raw power of the phoenix is not enough, she needs the aid of her fellow X-Men's spirits, their determination, so it's a significant 'almost'.) and displays the Phoenix as a force of goodness and harmony. The Fire is closely ascosiated with the Phoenix and here it is the fire the warms/heals. But there is two sides to most things. If you read this you must also read the "Dark Phoenix Saga" were the fire burns insted of warms...

The admirable Cambridge Music Handbooks series now offers more than 40 titles, each devoted to a single piece of music and each by a different author. Among the wide range of works represented (from Monteverdi's Vespers to the Beatles) is an especially fine volume on Berg's Violin Concerto. The task for the Eroica must have been especially daunting, but Thomas Sipe offers a notably thorough consideration of the symphony in the space of about a hundred pages.

Readers might do well to concentrate on the last chapter ("Interpretation"), which lays out a convincing reading of each movement of the Eroica. Among the many ideas touched on is Sipe's provocative theory that Beethoven is able "to delineate form not with periodic regularity but with overpowering syntactic necessity." Focus in the earlier chapters on historical background to the French Revolution leads to considerations of the relationship between Beethoven and Napoleon, to whom the symphony was originally dedicated, and of political utopianism. Sipe incorporates this into his larger theme of heroism, with particular emphasis on the classical figures of Prometheus and Hector. An earlier chapter ("Reception") summarizes two interpretations of the Eroica by M. Miel (on the Homeric model) and Richard Wagner (an idealized vision of redemption through love).

Sipe also offers well-chosen examples showing the gradual shift in musical analysis from programmatic considerations to the more objective, almost scientific style we are used to today. Readers will benefit from having scores (easily available from Dover) on hand to consult. --William R. Braun

          Book Description

Beethoven's Third Symphony, originally entitled "Bonaparte", now bears the title "Eroica" ("Heroic"). Napoleon promised an Enlightened Europe but ultimately Beethoven was disillusioned by him. This handbook treats the politics, aesthetics, reception, and musical meaning of this decisive work, which, because of its unique design, powerfully expanded the potential of symphonic expression. Beethoven's ideals, derived largely from the writings of Friedrich Schiller and clearly perceived already by the composer's contemporaries, are readily apparent in the music.

                              Book Description

This book was created for the 90 percent of small business owners who reportedly are dissatisfied with the results they get from local advertising. If followed, these rules, among them don’t ask your customer what brought them in, demand absolute accountability, and sell something more profitable than a low price, will broaden the customer base and enhance the bottom line. Specific growth objectives for advertising expenditures and the development of a system of absolute advertising accountability make this book distinctive. Business owners will learn to use advertising money wisely for maximum profitability.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome all-around tips geared toward small business owners........2006-07-01

I read this book while working as a local magazine ad sales rep while in college, and it gave me insight on what small business owners really need in local advertising and what mistakes sales reps make when suggesting ad space or making decisions. I like how it blends advertising theory, copywriting tips, and branding with media buying, targeting, and measurement. All catering toward small-medium sized business owners. It's awesome, especially for an intro to local advertising.
