Book Description
The notion of utopia exists in every culture, capturing shared dreams and common goals. This book--prepared to accompany the exhibition Expressionist Utopias mounted at the Los Angeles County Museum in 1993--explores how the optimistic themes of utopia and fantasy sustained faith among artists and architects in the power of art to shape a better world during the tumultuous World War I era in Germany. The exhibition's curator, Timothy O. Benson along with David Frisby, Reinhold Heller, Anton Kaes, Wolf Prix, and Iain Boyd White present the diverse manifestations of the utopia metaphor in its progression throughout Expressionism from Arcadian to manmade utopias.
This work includes a new essay and an interview by Edward Dimenberg with Wolf Prix on the spectacular installation created for the exhibition by the Viennese architectural firm Coop Himmelblau.

The L.A. County Musuem exhibit on 20th Century German Art.......2004-01-21
I am teaching a class on Utopian Images: Fact and Fiction and after the various novels, both utopian (e.g., "New Atlantis," "Looking Backward) and dystopian (e.g., "Brave New World," "Fahrenheit 451"), as well as the attempts to establish communal utopias in the United States (e.g., the Shakers, Oenida), there was a significant architectural movement involved with utopian structures. While not as primary an emphasis as the other two categories, there are certainly some interesting aspects of this aesthetic movement.
While the word "utopia," originally created by Sir Thomas More, paradoxically means both "no place" and "good place," obviously for architects it is the latter idea that is compelling. "Expressionist Utopias: Paradise, Metropolis, Architectural Fantasy," was originally published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This oversized volume looks at how the optimistic and forward-looking themes of utopia and fantasy sustained faith among not only architects but also artists to use the power of art to shape a better world during the era surrounding the First World War in Germany. The idea is that while all of the arts can offer a realm of fantasy, architecture becomes especially captivating because in part it provides the communal spaces of cultural identity in the form of meeting rooms, religious structures, and government buildings.
As such, "Expressionist Utopias" explores how architects took the opportunity to conceive and build a new environment for humanity. When it become pretty much impossible to actually construct new buildings in Germany between the wars, architects turned to drawing what they could not build. At the center of this movement were the "utopian architects" of the Working Council for Art and the Crystal Chain, whose architectural inventions ranged from ideal agrarian communities to futuristic worlds based on miraculous technological advances. Consequently, this book looks at the various manifestations of the utopian metaphor as it progresses through the Expressionists from arcadian to man-made utopias; in other words, what was once a nostalgia for the long lost paradise of the Bible's Garden of Eden or the Golden Age of Hesiod, was transformed into something that could be "constructed" in culture.
This volume includes selections from the realms of paradise, metropolis, architectural fantasy, anti-utopia, and film and stage. Timothy O. Benson, the curator of the exhibition and the Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies as the museum, provides the introduction. Art history professor Reinhold Heller examines the integration of art and life in both nature and the studio found in the paradisiacal imagery of the nude by the Dresden Brucke artists. David Fribsy argues how Expressionist art became the key response to the disenchantment with the modern metropolis. Ian Boyd Whyte discovers the Romantic heritage of the sublime being reinvested from nature to the process of industrialization. Anton Kaes exaimines Fritz Lang's classic film, "Metropolis," as a balance between the progressive and repressive elements of modernism, which will certainly be useful when I use the film in class. Dedward Dimendberg looks at the installation by Coop Himmelblau and conducts an interview with principal architect Wolf D. Prix.
The back of "Expressionist Utopias" includes an appendix that surveys the social exchange that took place in various articles and manifestos, offering a sampling of the Crystal Chain's illustrated "utopia correspondence." There is also a biography of each artist and architect from the exhibit. Now, I certainly did not know all that much about 20th Century German art, but I certainly know a lot more after reading this book and looking at the pictures. Now, if I can just figure out how to work some of this into my class.

The colors are too muted and the paper is flimsy. This is not on the same level as his GIBSON GIRLS.

Classic space opera.......2007-08-12
It's a wonderful time for fans of old comic strips. The classics from the first half of the 20th Century are showing up again in books: nice reprints of material that were previously inaccessible to the general public. Krazy Kat, Dick Tracy, Gasoline Alley, Popeye (Thimble Theater) are being restored for the enjoyment of new readers. And for those of a science fiction bent, there is Flash Gordon.
Volume 3 of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon continues the ongoing adventures of Flash and fellow Earth people Dale Arden and Hans Zarkov and their battles on the planet of Mongo. Mongo is a planet filled with strange kingdoms and stranger creatures, all ruled loosely by the evil emperor, Ming the Merciless. Most despise Ming's iron-fist rule, but only Flash's defiance offers an opportunity of hope.
The four chapters of this volume were originally published from 1936 to 1938. In "Forest Kingdom of Mongo", Flash, Dale and Hans find themselves in the forests of their friend Prince Barin, but stranded far from safety. Their battles against monsters and the environment continue into "Tusk Men of Mongo" which pits the heroes against a savage tribe. They're pussycats, however, compared to the "Beast Men of Mongo", and brief triumphs lead to greater dangers in "Outlaws of Mongo" in which Flash goes into open rebellion against Ming and faces execution.
With a strip only being issued once a week, characters and plot sometimes suffer, but even if the writing is not top-notch, this is still a fun strip, principally because of the imaginative art work of Raymond, of which little is comparable with in today's comic strips. Perhaps that's the danger of all these re-releases: they make today's strips seem rather pale in comparison. But it's worth the risk. If you enjoy the comics, you'll enjoy Flash Gordon.
Pure Escapism.......2006-01-28
Any fan of science-fiction/fantasy can't go wrong with the Flash Gordon series. If you've got a vivid imagination (like Alex Raymond obviously did)and an hour or so, this book will give you your money's worth. It's just plain fun to follow Flash and his friends' adventures on the planet Mongo and their struggle against the planet's evil ruler, Ming. The artwork is excellent, I think I spent more time viewing it than I did reading the dialogue. The Flash Gordon series is a classic and well-done example of the good vs. evil theme.
As for the book itself, the cover and pages are of good quality. The artwork is in full color, and there is a foreword by the Managing Editor. I highly recommend this volume, as well as the entire series.

there when I needed it.......2007-05-07
It was near 6 years ago when I found this book sitting on the shelf of a local bookstore, right there in literal black and white (at the time the cover was black and white). My boyfriend and I broke up just a few weeks prior and I was stricken. I saw this and bought it, and read through it in a couple hours. It helped, a lot. I found it in some boxes during a move a month ago and re-read it. Gave it to my sister and my best friend to read and they loved it too. Anyone, men or women, can relate, and the sarcasm makes me jealous. I wish I had a wit as quick as hers.
A surefire remedy for heartbreak.......2006-03-12
This is the ideal gift for any friend who's suffered a callous rejection. Anita Liberty takes perfect revenge on her unfaithful lover by pillorying him mercilessly in her hilarious stand-up comedy routine. Success and fame follows and her caddish lover even tries to winkle his way back into her shiny new life - only to be made even more of a public joke. Her revenge is doubly sweet.
delightful.......2006-03-11
I loved it and can't wait for the next one to be released. I'd recommend it to anyone.
On target!.......2003-03-23
Really, anyone who has been through a breakup can probably relate with what Anita has to say. This book plays very nicely to the anger stage. So well, in fact, that when my ex-boyfriend happened to see the book in the front seat of my car, he confessed to a bit of nervousness, as he probably wondered to what lengths I was going in order to get over him!
This book isn't going to tell you how to hate your ex, nor do I believe it was her intention to suggest you should use hate as a way to get past such a painful period. She simply voices a lot of the things people can feel while being on the receiving end of a breakup and seeing it in print, with such wicked wit behind it, can be VERY therapeutic.
It even prompted me to do some writing of my own, to fill in the parts I thought were missing from her book! :) At some points she goes a bit off topic and this is what prevented me from giving it 5 stars. Overall this is a great book and one I highly recommend to those who have experienced the pain of heartbreak.
Oh my GOD!.......2002-04-23
This book had to be the funniest book I have ever read in my entire life! I haven't just been dumped nor am I bitter over a failed relationship and I STILL think this is funny! What a crazy book - this woman says what we are all secretly thinking and telling ourselves. If you read this book you will laugh...

Ideas aplenty but little organisation.......2006-12-29
Meaning and melodrama is an investigation of the diverse ways, people have viewed the films of Douglas Sirk. It is an ambitious work that covers a huge amount of terain. She makes some interesting observations about the way perceptions change ovr time. It is simply not possible for a critic to look at the films of Rock Hudson - one of the definitive masculine heroes of the 1950s - and not take account of his homosexuality which was only publicly revealed when he died of AIDS many years later. Similarly, it is the off screen love life and political actions of DeMille, that may change a modern audience's perception of his films.
Professor Klinger asks what determines a film's meaning and ideological significance. She considers the internal features of film: its viewers, and its environment. For Klinger placing films in their historical context has larger implications for understanding the impact of cultural forces. It gives us an insight into the complex relationship between films and their contexts. She examines how institutions such as academia, the film industry and the media create an identity for films. She aims to "reconsider criticism as a specific kind of textual appropriation."
Klinger's basic idea is interesting; however, it seems to lead to self reinforcing statements. When the auterists were at their height as critical tradition such as the Sarris review of Sirk's body of work in the 1960s, it is not surprising that they regarded him as a fine director with a formal style. Similarly, it is not surprising that Marxists find issues of class in his films or that feminists find issues about gender. It would be astonishing if they didn't find them. As critical theories or frameworks rise and fall, it is not surprising that writers of that period follow the theories popular at that time. The ideological position of the critic is always going to be reflected in their criticism.
The book is interesting, but poorly organised and the whole work does not hang together and appears to be a series of seperate essays written with little relationship to each other. Aspects are fascinating, but the whole is unsatisfactory.

musical food for thought.......2003-05-25
This book is a good introduction to the many roles music plays in life and culture. For me it was no spectacular revelation, but I already had a degree in anthropology when I got it. But for anyone who is new to anthropology or has never thought about how music impacts our lives and what we use it for, it is a great place to start. The writer does a fine job of explaining some basic concepts of both music and anthropology in terms that are easy to grasp.
Customer Reviews:
A book on chess traps with many cheapos! .......2006-09-22
This is by the same author of "Chess Openings, Traps and Zaps" and somewhat of a reorganization of much of the same material except that it picks a bit of the "cheapo" (a chess term meaning a move that sets up a trap that only has the trap in mind and is usually not the most sound move if the opponent sees it) type traps. Personally I feel that books that cover opening chess traps are a good way to learn tactics. But I prefer the trap books that don't use cheapos, but instead use sound and logical moves, where there is a trap behind the best move even if the opponent sees the trap. By the way the word "fish" in chess doesn't really mean a person who is a newcomer and is unskilled - it is a word used in the place of the chess word "patzer" meaning a person who has played for many years and "lacks ordinary skill" (no talent or ability to improve and when plays chess they "swim around without a plan"). Noone calls a beginner a "fish" in chess. And, chess players who play cheapo chess are often called "fish" or "patzers". This book has its limited use for beginners to learn what NOT TO DO! But the way the book is written it doesn't tell it that way.
I can't believe these pathetic ratings!.......2005-10-12
Most tactical books either group the quizzes by type (ie, pin, discovered attack, etc) or don't group the quizzes at all (and both types of books are helpful).
However, this book groups the quizzes by move (ie, Qh5, Qd5, Bxf7, and Nxe5 for example). It really helped me to locate winning combinations early in the game. It also showed me how to attack early in the game.
I think it would be of great value to any chess player ranked below USCF 1800.
I suspect that the people who gave this book such a terrible rating assume that it's trying to teach people to "win quickly." Generally, there is no way to "win quickly" against a good opponent. So why bother to study these "tricks" that you will probably never get to use?
Well, actually, there is much value in studying them, but you are not studying "tricks" but learning tactical patterns that can be widely used if your opponent should happen to make an opening mistake.
Whenever there is a winning combination available, anywhere in the game, it means that your opponent has made a mistake. Studying tactics is the way to learn to identify the winning combination when a mistake has been made.
I think many people study openings hoping to get an advantage over their opponent early in the game. However, studying chess opening "lines" is just not of much value to someone rated under 2000.
Frankly, I think it would be wiser to study and re-study books like this one (or Pandolfini's other opening books called Traps and Zaps and Traps and Zaps 2). As I have already stated, you want to learn how to punish someone if they should happen to make an error, but that doesn't mean you memorize the opening "line" and hope your opponent makes it. Instead, you learn the PATTERN, so that you will recognize it if an opponent should ever make it.
Of course, this is exactly what should be done when studying tactics in general. We don't try to wait for the identical postition to arise. We just learn the pattern, and then practice identifying it in many different positions.
If a player is ranked below USCF 2000, he should spend the bulk of his study time practicing tactics, and this book is one of the best.
Makes you wonna play again and again.......2005-08-16
For what it is worth: my present ELO-rating is somewhere around 1650, but I've only played about 20 games in tournement and feel there's lots of room for improvement - books like "The Winning Way" are certainly amplifying this sentiment. Best standard rating on ICC: 1820 (it went down lately, under 1600, but at the moment it's moving upwards again up to +1700 and going steady :-).
I've struggled my way through lots of chess books. Many of the tactics shown and explained by famous GM's like Nunn, Dvoretsky, etc. are very good to learn from, but it's always hard work. If you feel like getting away from this "serious chess studying" and just enjoy yourself while still learning something, then get this book. I can't play through more than one or two examples from "The Winning Way" without feeling the urge to get up and start playing on the internet (I prefer ICC).
So, while I always have trouble studying chess for a longer period of time (say, 15 minutes or so :-), this book makes me walk to and fro between my computer (playing games) and the chessboard (every time getting more amazed about the simplicity of the demonstrated "chess mechanics" - although, of course it really isn't that simple...), and so on and so on...
This book really is an eye-opener; after reading half way through it I found myself looking at the whole game in a different way (taking notice of loose ends in my opponent's set-up and trying to exploit them). And you know what? It's not just an impression, my rating went up and (contrary to what normally happens) it stays up now! Also, I feel much more confident behind the chessboard.
Get this book, it will improve your awareness of chess.
Good for beginners, but Traps and Zaps 1 & 2 are better........2003-06-03
The title is not quite accurate. This is really a book of opening traps. The explanations are not nearly so helpful as the traps themselves.
Unfortunately, this book is not nearly so useful as Pandolfini's other trap books. As another reviewer stated, the traps here are categorized by the winning move, e.g. Bxf7 or Qh5. That makes the book useless for drilling tactics, as the winning move is already named in boldface at the top of the page. Also, the diagrams do not always follow the blunder immediately.
However, this book has the broadest coverage of the three, with maybe 25% non-king pawn openings. Perhaps you could cut out the pages and clip off the headings, then go through these in random order.
Definitely read the Traps and Zaps books first. I find this one valuable in improving my pattern recognition still further, as I can go through several examples of a single motif in one sitting, but you might consider skipping this one altogether nd going straight to the deeper traps in Chernev's wonderful Winning Chess Traps, then on to Burgess's Quickest Chess Victories of All Time.
This book seems to have fewer errors than the others, so I give it 4 stars.
Avoid Traps the Easy Way.......2003-01-16
This book has gotten some undeserved bad press. This book simplifies the avoidance of falling into elementary traps. There are a bunch of books about the various traps, but they aren't systematic, and, therefor, they are impossible to remember. Here the traps are systematically presented and easy to spot. Most of the traps involve checks and hanging pieces. The book also teaches the pluses of early aggressive Queen moves. I found it very informative and have avoided falling into some of the traps in my games. It also teaches you to take advantage of the opponent's mistakes. If you are getting boloed in the opening, take alook at this book.

Franchising for Dummies, by Michael Seid and Dave Thomas, details everything you need to know about this ever-popular route to self-employment. In typical Dummies fashion, it outlines the basics (from initial research through signing on the dotted line); development procedures (such as training employees, choosing locations, and buying goods); running the business (attracting customers, managing staff, dealing with franchisors); and moving on (considering further acquisitions, franchising your own ideas). Seid, a well-known consultant with 20 years in the field, and Thomas, the high-profile founder of and low-key spokesman for the fast-food chain Wendy's International, make this volume especially valuable by including inside tips taken from their extensive personal experience. "Too often, franchisees make the mistake of hiring an attorney to do battle with their franchisor, rather than simply sitting down with the franchisor, discussing their concerns, and coming to a negotiated conclusion," Seid advises at one point. "Training is nonstop, never-ending. It has to be," Thomas suggests elsewhere. "It has to remain a priority in your business because, one, you have turnover, but two, you can always improve." The combination provides a clear and complete primer for enlightened decision-making on virtually all aspects of franchise purchase and operation. --Howard Rothman

There must be better books on franchising.......2007-03-12
Michael Seid's extensive experience yields some useful insights and he explains many of the steps involved in franchising, but the book reads too much like advertorial and Seid spends way too much time trumpeting his own accomplishments. (Wendy's founder Dave Thomas' contributions to the book are woefully slim and including him as a coauthor seems to serve more as a marketing tool.) Franchising for Dummies would be a worthwhile addition to your library on the subject, but if you're looking for a single, objective, authoritarian source on the subject, keep looking.
A Must-Read for anyone considering buying a franchise.......2007-01-17
I read Franchising for Dummies before deciding to franchise my business concept, Moving Solutions. I found it helpful as a franchisor, by clarifying the issues from the franchisee's perspective and identifying the characteristics I need to look for in successful franchisees. The book's main premise --that franchising is a governed by contracts but it really about trust and relationhsips --resonates with my own values. We recommend Franchising for Dummies to every prospect who contacts us as a Must-Read before we begin the evaluation process.
Great Information.......2007-01-11
This book is a excellent source for information. Breaks everything down into understandable sections. A must have for anyone thinking about getting into a Franchise.
Extremely good and very objective.......2004-12-16
When I bought this book, I wondered: How objective can Dave Thomas be? Won't this just be a plug for Wendy's?
But, I was very pleasantly surprised. This book doesn't get boring with Wendy's references, because it talks objectively about a lot of different franchises. It does only reference McDonald's once, which I found amusing, but it is very objective.
And, this is a lot of good advice. It is a great first franchising book. It covers all of the bases. It's not going to give you anything, but then again, "Writing Video Games for Dummies" isn't the only thing you need to land a job as a video game programmer for Halo 3.
Good, but not what I needed to find the right franchise.......2004-11-17
I found this book to be adequate in some areas and lacking in others. The challenge that I had was when I had a question the book does not supply me with an expert to ask questions of and it tended to raise more questions for me than it answered.
With a little bit of research, and Google, I found an expert consultant, George Knauf who was able to help me understand franchising and find the right businesses to meet my goals out of the thousands of possible franchise choices in the market.
And, unlike the book, the advice didn't cost me anything!
Use the book to raise questions, then find some good advice. Don't go it alone when making this kind of decision, I didn't.
