Beads have been used throughout the ages and in virtually every culture, not simply as adornment but to express social circumstances, political occurrences, and religious beliefs; as a form of currency; or as symbolic embodiments of curative powers. And they're colorful, made of various interesting materials, and can be combined in endless configurations. With more than 100 crisp color photos and intelligently written text that reaps the benefits of the author's 30 years of research, The History of Beads documents bead styles and uses in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Far East. Ranging from prehistoric times to the 20th century, this book stops along the way to consider the magic eye bead, prayer beads, and beads with other special attributes. An eight-page color gatefold section offers a fascinating timeline of the bead's history at a glance. Bead devotees can satisfy their curiosity about their medium of choice and draw inspiration for their own creations from the beautiful photos of necklaces, collars, bags, headdresses, and other beaded ornaments. --Amy Handy
Book Description
In its original hardcover edition (1987), this remarkable book was the first comprehensive history of beads ever published. It includes several thousand examples of beads, beaded jewelry, and beadwork representing 30,000 years of history and drawn from every major culture and region of the world. Now largely unavailable in hardcover and still the most authoritative book on the subject, it is finally available in paperback at a very attractive price.
For thousands of years, beads have played an important role throughout the world, from Japan to Cameroon. This highly unusual and innovative volume surveys the fascinating story of their evolution: beads have been used as a medium of trade, as talismans, as personal adornment, as status symbols, and as religious artifacts. They are capsules of cultural, historical, and technological information. This ambitious survey of beads and their unique contribution to history features more than 380 illustrations, most in full color, a spectacular illustrated time line of bead history, detailed maps, a chart of bead shapes, and a highly readable text by Lois Sherr Dubin.

very informative.......2007-03-26
This book covered all about beads. I bought it for a presentation my daughter was doing for her 6th grade class. It was very helpful.
Sparse.......2007-02-14
I was expecting a huge book full of pictures and information, and while there are pictures and good information, it's rather sparse. I'm surprised at how few books are available on the subject of jewelry in history, considering it's nearly the only thing we have left of many cultures. If you are desperate for any information on beads in history, this is a good starting place, but I was left wanting more.
Incredible book.......2007-01-04
The best tool for bead lovers and craftsmen, I am very happy with it and the price is very good for the quality. The bead table with reference to the timing is something special.
A 'MUST OWN' for all interested in beads, jewerly, adornment.......2004-12-27
I own a great deal of books on the subject of beads. I can easily say that I find myself returning to this book again and again for both reference and entertainment. Although some information may require a bit of updating, the work itself is easily one of the best books on the subject, making it an absolute 'must have' for anyone interested in beads, jewelry, or the history of adornment in cultures throughout the world. Although there are two wonderful editions of this book, I recommend the unabridged vesion, as it obviously contains the most amount of information. Overall, this book is concise, well-illustrated, and an overall entertaining read!
Incredible Book and a labor of love.......2004-07-16
This book comes in two versions: a concise version and a huge hardcover version. I own both, but find the unabridged version to be head and shoulders above the paperback "bead history lite" one. This huge tome is a labor of love, and is one of the best books available to learn why every culture devised by man has valued these little objects with holes in them.
There are plenty of photos, and the book follows the parallel paths of humans and beads throughout history. It can be startling and amusing to discover that what we consider to be new and exciting has been done many times in the past by people in cultures everywhere. I personally found it facinating to discover that one of the first things that humans do when we discover a new material is to punch a hole in it and wear it as a bead.
Intrinsically, beads are mostly worthless, but this book shows how they bind us all together and add to our knowledge of the people share our planet, both now and in the past. A must read for the serious bead artist.

Essential is right!.......2006-04-05
Essential is right. This is 20 plus issues from the early days of Peter Parker's adventures as Spider-Man and some of the best. The storytelling by Stan Lee, the art by Steve Ditko...it's all here and it's all great. Memorable villians, fun stories, great artwork. This is a must-read for any Spidey-fan. I had a great time reliving old memories of the days I read these as re-prints in Marvel Tales.
an enjoyable trip down memory lane.............2005-10-27
I purchased this as a present for my grandson and ended up reading and enjoying it myself. This book brought back many childhood memories for me of carefree afternoons of reading adventures and comic book swapping with friends.
What a great and inexpensive way to regain your old comic book collection. I thought the black and white illistrations might take something away but it really doesn't. This is the second book in the series that I have purchased and would difinately recommend it to anyone looking for some nostalgia.
Spidey Rawks!.......2004-08-21
Stan Lee's, Steve Ditko's, and John Romita's "Essential Spider-Man, Vol. 2" is an awesome graphic novel of Spider-Man's original comic book series! This volume contains the exciting issues #21-43 and Annuals #2 & 3! This book introduces lots of new changes for Peter Parker. His love for Betty Brant changes to Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson. It also brings lots of different villains to light for Spidey to battle, like:
- The Beetle
- The Clown, and his Masters of Menace
- The Green Goblin
- Mysterio
- The Crime-Master
- The Molten Man
- Xandu
- The Scorpian
- The Cat
- Kraven the Hunter
- Doc Ock
- The Looter
- The Rampaging Robots of Dr. Stromm
- The Rhino
What's really cool about this book is when you read the 3-part series of Spider-Man battling Doc Ock for the very life of his Aunt May, and when Spidey and the Green Goblin are both unmasked to each other! Another cool thing is the guest-appearances of The Human Torch, Dr. Strange, The Hulk, and the Avengers!
Even though the pages are all in black and white, I was still able to greatly appreciate Steve Ditko's and John Romita's art of drawing Spider-Man and his villains. I sped through this novel faster than I thought, wishing it wouldn't end! If you're a fan of Spider-Man, you'll love this great volume!
Companion piece for this great graphic novel.......2004-03-16
As great as this graphic novel was by itself, I know of one helluva great companion piece in the form of a book entitled "The Adventures of Darkeye: Cyber Hunter" whose odd manner of having log-entries over chapters seems almost like the script for a graphic novel, even though it is in the science fiction/high-tech and cyberpunk genre along with books like "Cryptonomicon", "Snow Crash", "Prey", and "Altered Carbon". Very fast-paced and visual as well as being very exciting due to its action-packed pages.
up up and a way.......2003-08-28
It is no secret that Peter Parker is one of the best created characters in marvel histroy and he comes with a bounus a little nerdy kid has all the perks of a spider and none of the nasty qualities, or does he? the second eidition gets you closer to the characters and enters romatia who became the greatest spider man artist of all time, great book

Funniest. Novel. Ever.......2006-02-16
I read this book ages ago and enjoyed it completely. Chris Elliott is one of the most underrated comics around and this book is proof. Virtually nobody has read it, but everyone who has loves it.
Chris is still deepy & achingly in luv with Pamela Sue Martin.......2005-12-16
And that's the reason Chris interpolated THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE into DADDY'S BOY. Pamela Sue was at the apogee of her scrumptiousness in 1973. In the squeezy-wet summer of her sweet goosey youth. Don't be fooled by Chris's distractionary references to "the leggy blonde in the wedgie sandals". Carol Lynley means nothing to Chris. There's only you, Pamela Sue. Only you.
If Bobby Darin was a triple-threat, Bobby Elliott was a megatuple-threat: "When I entered his world, he was at his height. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing his deep manly baritone belting out a lilting romantic lullaby. You couldn't go to the movies without seeing his rock-solid shoulders and receding hairline fill the screen, and you couldn't go to the supermarket without seeing his cherubic face emblazoned on the labels of Bob Elliott's Famous Salad Dressing, or Bob Elliott's Popcorn, Chewing Tobacco, and Turkey Franks. He monopolized the talk shows and gossip columns. His appearance could turn a boring party into an 'event'. He composed, he performed, he lifted weights, and he painted all the murals in the lobby of the RCA Building. He was King of Comedy, King of Drama, and Teen Beat's Hunk-of-the-Month at age 53."
Let it also be known that Chris shamelessly borrowed a bit of shtick from THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE: "He [Wulfgang Herbert] also felt that since there were no right angles in nature, there should be no right angles in anything man-made, including architecture. Every attempt at constructing a Herbert school without right angles met with disaster before the school could be completed, and so classes were held outside, literally on 68th and Lexington."
Chris appropriated Monty Python's Trim-Jeans joke with complete peace of mind: "Still later that night, with my mind lost in the parking lot of the Bates Motel, my nostrils filled with the familiar Mum aroma. I woke immediately, and there, standing in the doorway, was Daddy. He was naked except for a pair of inflatable undershorts. (The undershorts were something he had seen advertised on television. Supposedly, if you wore them to bed, you could lose weight in your sleep.) He stood swaying in the doorway for an eternity. Then, in a hushed voice, almost a whisper, he implored: 'If you eat spaghetti, please watch out for the bay leaves!' He turned and was gone as suddenly as he had appeared."
But the best reason to hate Chris is for the following passage: "The twins, A and B, shaved their heads, moved to Iran, and opened a chain of Bob's Big Boys, and the rest of the thugs were at Stanford Medical School trying to come up with a cure for those obnoxious people who insist on closing their eyes whenever they talk."
It just so happens that some of those eye-closers are thinking of Pamela Sue Martin. And there's nothing wrong with that. Isn't that right, Chris.

Any questions?
you should be so lucky to die reading this book.......2003-10-11
Chris Elliott had, prior to writing Daddy's Boy, proven himself to be THE interpreter of tortured genius Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Reading this tour-de-force gives us an insight into how one so seemingly insouciant as Mr. Elliott could render such pain so forcibly yet tenderly as he did in his one man show where he played the presidential paraplegic and tempest-tossed castaway. For we see that his own life has been a nightmare picaresque, a bob-and-weave in the eternal boxing match with the father. Daddy's Boy is a roller coaster ride through the bowels of hell from start to finish. If you liked Richard III, The Epic of Gilgamesh, and A Night Without Armor, you will run naked through your mother's boudoir due to the thrill you'll receive from Daddy's Boy.
Book Description
Taking issue with many orthodox views of Film Noir, Frank Krutnik argues for a reorientation of the compulsively engaging area of Hollywood cultural production. By analysing individual films within a generic framework and using recent historical and theoretical research Krutnik looks at both the diversity of film noir and at its cultural significance. Through an examination of such films as The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Gilda and The Lady From Shanghai he looks at the `tough' thriller in terms of

Book Description
Crafted by cutting-edge performance artist/musician Laurie Anderson and designed by Hsin-Chien Huang, this CD-ROM eschews the gaming conventions of most interactive CD-ROMs in favor of casting the user adrift on an ocean of repeated images, ubiquitous voices, and mesmerizing rhythms. Navigating PUPPET MOTEL is a challenge in itself; the map is your memory of what you've already seen, with objects functioning as signposts. This surreal experience includes plenty of music by Laurie Anderson and is linked to her website where the user can download videos, pick up hints, share discoveries, and view information on her upcoming projects and performances.
Customer Reviews:
Amazon can't supply . . . .......2006-01-27
I would love to be able to review this CD-ROM, but 2 1/2 months
after placing my order, Amazon wrote that they could not supply
it.
So why does Amazon still have it for sale?
Clicking the "used and new" link, I find some used versions for
more than the "new" price". It seems there was originally a
Macintosh only version, and then a Windows/Mac version.
A "new" Mac/Windows version is available from Amazon seller
"amana2" for USD$225.
Googling indicates that the Voyager company which produced
"Puppet Motel" no longer exists. I can't find a mention of it at
Laurie Anderson's site, though apparently in the past there was
a reference, pointing to Amazon as the place to purchase the
CD-ROM.
"Puppet Motel" is highly regarded, so I gave it five stars in
absentia. But Amazon deserves a negative number of stars for
pretending to be able to supply it.
Awesome!.......1999-10-30
When I bought this I was a little worried it would be out of date because it is a few years old, but WOW! Incredible, awesome, always surprising, entertaining. I love it more than her CDs!
Spooky and mind-altering.......1999-09-17
At first I was a bit perplexed by a CDROM that's more an interactive objet-d'art than a game; and in the first night I played with this for like eight hours, until I thought I'd played it to death and would never touch it again. But I found its strange imagery coming back to me, and I tinker with it more and more now, sometimes just to hear the interesting background music, of which there is a LOT.
The packaging for this CD says it contains over two hours of instrumental music or spoken word performance, and it's true. Some of the music I recognize from "Ugly One With The Jewels", and some of it was even background music that Laurie Anderson did for Spalding Grey's movie "Swimming to Cambodia" (and as far as I know, no soundtrack CD was ever released of that).
If you find yourself wanting to hear the music on its own, it's straightforward to sift thru the CDROM's directories, find the AIFC files (*.AIF), decompress them (easy on a Mac with SoundApp -- I don't know what you'd use for handling AIFCs on other platforms), and burn them to audio CD for your personal listening fun. Now, there's not many CDROMs where the music is so good that you'd want to do that! But this is sure one of them.

Arianna from Greece Sticker Paper Doll

Customer Reviews:
Madeline and Eloise, WATCH OUT!.......2001-07-30
This has become one of my favorite children's books! I fell in love with the story and the drawings the very first time I read it and I've bought several copies for all the little girls I know. Arianna's thoughtful delight in being a little girl and exploring grown up places makes her worthy of occupying the same shelves as Madeline and Eloise.
If you're looking for a children's book that hasn't been overmarketed yet and will warm the hearts of people of any age, I highly recommend ARIANNA AND THE STRAWBERRY TEA.
Delightful tale with a satisfying conclusion!.......1999-01-20
This is a delightful tale in which Arianna's unwitting, uninhibited and confident behavior shows children that they, too, can make a difference in the adult world. It has an immediate appeal to all children. What child has not wished to eat with grown-ups in a fancy restaurant or even at an adults-only dinner party, let alone in the Grand Hotel? The book offers both a fanciful and a realistic view of an exclusive, traditional hotel both through the descriptions and the engaging illustrations. Monsieur Le Bear, the supporting character, both by his demeanor and his silence, adds immeasurably to the enjoyment of the story as children love to see him mimic Arianna's behavior. The book's well balanced and at time rhythmic narrative holds children's attention through to the satisfying ending. The unique and simple recipes at the end of the book are an added bonus, and I can imagine that lots of children have already sat down to strawberry tea and chocolate tarts after reading this tale. The story, illustrations and recipes make for a brilliantly enjoyable combination. On a practical level, parents will appreciate that the story can help children build confidence in themselves and offers opportunties for vocabulary development and discussion. My family hopes for a sequel!
This is a fabulous book with outstanding illustrations........1998-12-26
The drawings in this book are the best I have seen in a long time. They are all done by hand by a very talented artist and nothing was done using a computer!
Wonderfully charming book that kept my daughter's interest........1998-12-11
The story is delightful because it is about a little girl who had an impact upon older people and "tradition".She made her statement just by being herself. The illustrations are fabulous! My daughter read this book and loved it immediately. It is a treat to receive the recipes for strawberry tea and chocolate tarts.

Customer Reviews:
It's a start!.......2006-11-07
There is really no middle-ground when it comes to Robert Allen. You either like his work or you think that his concepts are risky and/or far-feteched. I personally like Allen's approach to real estate from a novice standpoint. I have utilized many of his techniques to success. However, I do caution, once you get momentum, go to the next level and make money on the buy and continue to educate yourself on the right way to remain in real estate for the long-term. This will mean studying markets and having a long-term and short term strategy. This will mean that traditional closings have the place and creative real estate does not equate to illegal if done the right way with the right team - and can keep you out of trouble with your accountant. This will mean knowing the true cost of money (time value, strategy for each property, situation of the Seller, your situation and access to resources, etc.)
As time progresses, I suspect that many of these practices will be regulated and closely watched. However, don't blame Allen - there are many financing structures that get sellers into becoming motivated thus these techniques are executed. Play close attention to his guidance on commecial properties, cross-collaterization, dream-teaming, and subject-to/lease option structuring - these deals are made every day.
I never had a problem with Allen and as a matter of fact consider him important to the "master of your fate" outlook. He is now more or less an information guru because like so many before and after him - real estate is the impetus for improving your financial state to (a) start the million dollar business; (b) divesify and partner into different and larger properties, and (c) meet those who exercise advanced, long-term real estate strategies that lead to successful careers.
Oh -- let it be mentioned: Robert Allen is not "breeding competition." He is well-past these stages, but is willing to share on some of his novice techniques to get you started.
Good Read - Supplement it and Educate Yourself and you all will be well if the focus and desire is there. If not: Continue to blame Allen for trying to share pearls of wisdom at a modest cost.
Getting Started in Real Estate.......2006-09-20
This was an all around decent book for someone desiring to get started in the real estate business. It has 30 short chapters focusing on getting into the real estate business with no money. One of which is called tapping the equity in your home. Nothing really new there. The book contains some good concepts but a lot was just common sense. If you haven't bought real estate before and don't no much about financing then this will open up your eyes to some concepts that you may not have thought of before. There is a chapter on why you should own property. One on negotiations, one on using partners and another on overcoming roadblocks to your success. There is also a chapter on how to retire in 5 years. All in about 280 pages that will go by quick.
I think the most important thing that one could recieve from this book is that anyone can do it. It doesn't take a masters degree in economics to do this stuff. I think this book can give the reader a good basic understanding of how real estate and rental property works so they too can get involved. Just remember that positive cash flow is a must!
Stuff.......2006-07-20
Some of it kinda sounds farfetched, but I guess if sellers are desperate enough it could work.
Boycott Robert G. Allen!!!.......2006-05-20
Robert G. Allen is a notorious and relentless internet spammer. If you should happen to somehow end up on one of his email lists like I did, he will send you several junk emails a day. Unsubscribing doesn't work, and trying to block the sender's domain is useless because the emails are sent from a different domain every time. The funny part is that the emails aren't even coded properly. They always show up as just a bunch of html code. Would you really take internet money-making advice from a guy who can't even code html properly? Anyway, his spamming practices are completely illegal and it's only a matter of time before the law catches up with him. But that shouldn't come as any surprise considering that mister Allen has been in trouble with the law before. He's had several run-ins with the IRS, lawsuits against him, and a chapter 7 bankruptcy. I would also stay away from his Nothing Down real estate methods. Many of those practices are illegal, and the president of the Nothing Down club in Atlanta wound up in federal prison because of it. For more info on Allen, visit johntreed dottcomm, click on Real Estate Investing, then click Real Estate Guru Ratings. Bottom line, don't trust this guy and don't buy his books. And if you're reading this Mr. Allen, take me off your @%#&*$ mailing list!!!
Great Scam.......2006-01-29
I was actually very impressed by the material in the book and would have undoubtly given it 5 stars. BUT something very fishy made me change my mind. I applied to enroll into the Robert Allen Instiitute mentorship program for real estate investment (details are online). I got a call from the Program and a sales person like sounding gentleman, who threw around his weight and suggested multiple times that it would be an honor for me to be chosen for the mentorship program spoke to me for an hour...And then he and his supervisor suggested that if I trusted Robert Allen, I should give him my credit card number for a charge of 6000-10000$!!!!. 'It takes money to make money' he said. When I told him that he will need to tell me how many perople are actually in the program and how many actually make money, he was caught offguard...at the end of the conversation he was frankly rude and said 'Well, think about it, all you have done in your life so far is made 80000$ a year'...I mean how unclassy can you get!!...well thank you Mr Allen and your sales-people...I sure can tell how you have made your money.
