Not a bad reference........2006-11-19
I'll keep this brief and to the point.
This book isn't a perfect history of cowboy equipment and clothing, but it IS useful. There are some factual errors (for example, depicting men of the 1880s using union suit underwear, when in fact those items came into use in the early 1900s), as well as a little Hollywood influence (some of the hats in the drawings are more akin to a western movie hat than a working cowboy's hat), but by and large this is a useful reference.
An excellent quick reference; Wonderful illustrations.......1999-12-13
This book was originally published in the mid seventies; it is nice to have a reprint available. Interiewing old cowboys in the 1950's, the author gained a great deal of primary source material in regards to what types of clothing and equipment were used. A great deal of drawings appear throughout the text. This book depicts the cowboy at his most practical. A good book, though a tad expensive.
Extremely basic. Best for young kids........1999-08-21
I was looking for a reference book with names, makers, pictures, etc. This book is very basic and appears to be aimed toward a young reader.

Book Description
By the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
"After all these many years, with nary a competitor in sight nor hindsight, Mr. Hirschfeld remains the master-the undisputed Chairman of the Drawing Board."
-Larry Gelbart
Al Hirschfeld's line drawings are synonymous with the American theater, but his dynamic work for Hollywood films is only now gaining the attention it deserves. This fun, affordable paperback-which accompanies an exhibition at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences-showcases his marvelous artwork for movie posters, billboards, murals, and theater displays with images of film stars from Laurel and Hardy to the Marx Brothers, Fred Astaire, and Julia Roberts; and for classic movies such as The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, and The Manchurian Candidate. The entire world of cinema, as only Hirschfeld could portray it, unfolds in this radiant companion volume to Hirschfeld's New York.

Outstanding artwork.......2005-04-07
Posters used to publicize movies are an art form that has largely been lost. Modern forms of publicity rely on computer-generated images, web sites and animation. Al Hirschfeld was one of the outstanding drawers of such posters and this is a collection of some of his best. Nearly all depict older movies or the stars of those movies, the most recent poster for a movie is from the early 1990's. There are also some figures of old stars that he drew for postage stamps.
I enjoyed the artwork, but I also enjoyed the nostalgic look back through a history of some of the greatest movies ever made and the stars that made them great. It is a history of the movies from a perspective quite different than reading about the plots and the trials and tribulations of making them.
All Hirschfeld.......2002-02-22
Everything about Hirschfeld was already said. He's a genius. He's the Line King. He's almost 100 years old. And he's alive. Get this damn book. Buy the old ones. Collect them. Buy the video. Cut his drawings from the Sunday NYTimes. Stop buying stupid eletronic gadgets, save the money, and then spend 2 thousand in an original lithograph. I did it. Twice. And there's nothing in the world that can make me feel better. Maybe another one.

A bestselling, Harvard-bred humorist plans to knock out a slapdash, quick-buck parody of a wildly successful, head-spinning, clue-laden thriller in a flagrant attempt to cash in on the publishing sensation of the decade, but the tousle-haired satirist's sleazy scheme goes awry when his two heroes -- beautiful, brilliant Sandra Damsel and brawny, brainy Professor William Franklin -- stumble on an explosive and frankly preposterous centuries-old secret that plunges them into a puzzle-packed, plot-crammed, prose-swollen Washington intrigue whose flabbergasting finale will determine the outcome of the 2004 presidential election.

An excellent combination of satire and spoof.......2006-11-13
This book is a combination spoof and satire. The spoof aspect is in play because it follows a plot line similar to "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. It is satirical in the sense that it lampoons the Bush administration and how it has conducted itself. In the most significant cases, the actual names of the perps are used. Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, Karl Rove, John Ashcroft and Antonin Scalia all appear in the book. Then there are many made up and hysterical names such as special agents Fine and Dandy, the two great preachers Jordy Weevil and Pug Buggerson, agent Sandra Damsel, Virginia Senator Richard Kydd, Native American Quick Brown Fox and lobbyist Hale Hardy.
As is the case in "The Da Vinci Code" there are two main characters who are engaged in tracking down a murder case. The codes in this case are trivial, what makes them funny is that the characters take them so seriously. My favorite scene is when Dick Cheney is trying to enter a secret chamber where he is joining the remainder of the cabal controlling the world. Queen Elizabeth, Henry Kissinger, Alan Greenspan, David Rockefeller and Rupert Murdoch are already present. The secret knock is of course, "Shave-and-a-haircut, two bits."
There is an enormous amount of very funny satire in this book. However, like the best of the genre, it is necessary to have a great deal of knowledge about recent affairs in order to understand all of it. For example, there are references to the "Skull and Bones" secret society at Yale. The relationship between Thomas Jefferson and his slave girl Sally Hemmings is a significant part of the plot, if you know nothing about that relationship, then it will be difficult to untangle the plot. Nevertheless, if you understand the references, this book is hysterical.
For Cheney's Boys..........2005-05-16
They being the five young Americans who went to Vietnam in place of Dick (5 deferments) Cheney. There's absolutely nothing wrong with getting five deferments, unless you subsequently become a politician and send other people's sons and daughters off to war.
A book that mocks the overblown and utterly derivative The Da Vinci Code and Dick Cheney at the same time simply has to be worth a read. I managed to force myself through the mind-numbingly predictable TdVC only to discover that it had taken literally all of its ideas from countless books that had been spouting the same 'revelations' for at least two decades. While it is definitely an advantage to have read The Da Vinci Code, I'm sure this book would be highly entertaining even as is.
Seriously funny... which is probably an oxymoron. But then, let's leave Rumsfeld out of this.
By the way, Mona Lisa means Ra Isis.
Thank You Dan Brown.......2005-02-22
This hidden message found on the back cover of the book tells exactly why this book is so funny. That is, Beard perfectly parodies The Da Vinci Code taking many stabs at Brown's style. The book even starts by mentioning what organizations are real like Brown does.
From a political standpoint, Beard definitely has a liberal slant. He takes many jabs at the Patriot Act and President Bush. While he does have make fun of John Kerry's flip flopping, the needling is far less than that of the President.
Beard's overall writing style is nothing great. He jumps around a bit and does not fill in many details. Nor does Beard try overly hard to write a coherent and absorbing story preferring instead to rely on the strength of the parody.
From this point of view he succeeds marvelously. If you find Dan Brown's writing to be somewhat predictable and long winded then you will find great joy in Beard's novel. Beard will even point out extra flaws in The Da Vinci Code and Brown's overall style.
Magnificently humorous!!.......2004-10-07
This is a book that one can truly laugh outloud while reading, only if they've met the following two criteria: 1.) they've read the DaVinci Code and 2.) they are up to speed on all the happenings in Washington, DC and the political arena. If you have not met these two criteria, then the book will not seem as enjoyable or as funny.
The author has brilliantly masterminded a way to incorporate the similar twists from the DaVinci Code into a political thriller/parody. This is an easy reading, which can be read in one sitting (well, depending on how many times you have to stop reading because you're laughing so hard...) and is well worth the time!
A delicious parody.......2004-09-19
From page one, "The Dick Cheney Code" surpasses "The Da Vinci Code" whose peculiarities it caricatures. It's not only civilized, clever, and well written, but also -- and this is crucially important, because these days it would be easy, with what's going on inside the Beltline, to succumb to despair -- it's delightfully funny! A good laugh is hard to find. As Norman Couisins would attest, Henry Beard has contributed to the health of the nation by offering this delicious parody just when we need it.

Lions and Tigers and Mice, Oh My!.......2006-02-24
The Disney Days calendars have been a staple on my desk for years. Combining images from animated features and shorts with release dates and historical tidbits, they help satisfy this Disney fan's cravings. A bit of flip-chart animation decorates one corner, just for fun. There's even a bit of uncluttered space for those barbarians who write notes on calendar pages. Now, if I could just get them to split the weekends into two separate pages it would be perfect.
Beautiful calendar, for Big and Little Children.......2005-11-03
This kind of calendars are beutiful, and for all who likes movies, let remember all scenes and memorable phrases from each character.
I'm a fan from block calendars, and definitivily Disney Days 2006 day to day calendar, is a good choice to every one who likes Disney (and children) movies.

Book Description
A unique Israeli national culture--indeed, the very nature of "Israeliness"--remains a matter of debate, a struggle to blend vying memories and backgrounds, ideologies and wills. Identifying popular music as an important site in this wider cultural endeavor, this book focuses on the three major popular music cultures that are proving instrumental in attempts to invent Israeliness: the invented folk song repertoire known as Shirei Eretz Israel; the contemporary, global-cosmopolitan Israeli rock; and the ethnic-oriental musica mizrahit. The result is the first ever comprehensive study of popular music in Israel.
Motti Regev, a sociologist, and Edwin Seroussi, an ethnomusicologist, approach their subject from alternative perspectives, producing a truly interdisciplinary, sociocultural account of music as a feature and a force in the shaping of Israeliness. A major ethnographic undertaking, describing and analyzing the particular history, characteristics, and practices of each music culture, Popular Music and National Culture in Israel maps not only the complex field of Israeli popular music but also Israeli culture in general.

A valuable classic!.......2007-07-28
THE how-to book for writing advertising that works, by one of the top advertising men of the last 100 years. This books is packed with tips, ideas and terrific ads you can use for inspiration. More than just a look at ads that have pulled the best, Caples includes simple, easy to understand tips and ideas you can use right away in your own advertising and copywriting.
From ways to start and write headlines, to how to organize and word your ad for maximum results, this book is considered the bible of proven advertising techniques. Buy it, and put it on your shelf right next to "Ogilvy on Advertising". I did.
Classic that eveyone in marketing should own........2007-07-02
Great book that I reference to all the time. Even new marketing methods like Google Adwords can be GREATLY improved upon with the techniques in this book.
A must have book for marketers.......2007-05-12
This book is incredible. It's the one book of the many David Ogilvy recommends in his book as required reading and that's coming from David Ogilvy! John Caples was a copywriting and advertising legend so you will learn how to write copy from one of the best ever. As if the original book wasn't fantastic as is, Fred E. Hahn has updated it up to 1998. Even though this book was written well before the Internet burst on to the scene and it was last updated in 1998, it doesn't matter it's still the best book out there for anyone serious about being a successful Internet Marketer. With this book you will have front row access to 58 years of John Caples tested advertising methods which you can apply to your Internet marketing projects. I was so impressed with the material in this book that I went and bought John Caples four other books. For Internet marketers you will learn more from this $11 book than any Internet marketing so called guru course out there. Save your hard earned cash and buy this book instead.
Methods That Don't Expire!.......2006-12-23
While the latest revision of this book was published almost a decade ago (1997), the methodologies described and outlined are still very applicable. It's also worth checking out this book if you're looking for a different slant on a current theme as testing is the best way to fine tune your overall marketing "message."
In a nutshell, this book is worth considering if your advertising campaign needs a shot in the arm. Don't let the publication date fool you into thinking the ideas and methodologies contained within are "stale."
Classic Advertising Book by one of the Greats.......2006-12-21
A great text by one of the most successful advertising copywriters of all time. There is no better way to learn about advertising than by studying the classics. John Caples book is one of the best I have ever read on the subject.
