Book Description
In this delightful introduction to the art of Henri Rousseau children explore a tropical jungle while they learn about the colors and themes that make the artist's paintings masterpieces of deceptive simplicity. As a customs official, Henri Rousseau escaped the boredom of his job by creating colorful paintings of a fantastic dream worlda place where apes and lions cavort, snakes slither, flamingoes stroll, tigers hunt, and enigmatic figures entice unsuspecting visitors amid lush, tropical plants and flowers. This book draws children into Rousseau's most famous works, pointing out the many elements and symbols he incorporated, and helping them understand the use of perspective and color that were his trademarks. Biographical information reveals the importance the natural world played in Rousseau's life and the playful text encourages further investigation into the power of imagination and creativity.

A Fun Debate.......2007-04-12
This book will spark discussions among sports fans about athletes and the numbers they wore. You'll also learn the rumors behind why some athletes wore certain numbers.
Unique and great book for the sports buff.......2007-02-20
Really loved this book... even though my beloved LSU Tigers did not always have the rating of "best" at that number.
Fabulous fun for sports fans.......2007-01-17
I gave this book to several of my husband's co-workers because he works in sports television. It's a very well-written, thought-provoking (and discussion/argument-provoking) publication! Plus, it has terrific anecdotes scattered throughout the pages about suspicions regarding the uniform numbers and why certain players changed numbers mid-career. LOTS of FUN!!! They loved it!
Great gift!.......2007-01-10
I gave this book to two men in my family and both of them immediately began thumbing through it. They loved to read about those that were highlighted that they agreed with, and argue about who should not have made the book.
A Fun Book.......2007-01-06
Great to see who wore what, and what they meant to their respective sports...a fun book to share with your kids

Customer Reviews:
Who Wore What?.......2007-05-10
I loved perusing through this book and seeing all the pictures. It was full of useful information.
What to Wear?.......2006-06-07
I enjoyed this book and found it informative. However if you have a general knowledge of the time then some information will not be helpful. For instance the author spoke of mourning clothes and some of the different stages. I believe most people who are interested in the time already know such facts.
Some of the pictures were outstanding and are very haunting.
I wonder how many pictures the author studied. It was a thought that ran through my mind, and where were these women from? These were just offhanded questions I had and I wondered if it would have changed some of her theories.
There was one part I did not agree with. If I recall correctly( I had to give my copy back to the library) the author states that the reason mammy was upset that Scarlett wore her dress to the barbeque was because it was childish, and cut in a childish style. Yet I seem to recall mammy saying that she was not to show her "bosoms before 3 o'clock." And if you look at the dress Scarlett wore, it wasn't a child's dress but a ball gown worn at the wrong time of the day.
My suggestion is to get this book from the library. If you really enjoyed it and believe it can be a great resource for you then order a used copy. I am unsure I would put the money down on this out of print book, especially if you already have some fashion knowledge.
Very Well Done.......2005-02-28
I must disagree with some of the previous reviewers on a number of issues about this book on women's clothing styles of the Civil War period.
First off, Ms. Leisch IS a clothing and social historian, contrary to what another reviewer wrote. I have read other works by her and have checked numerous points she has made with other writings and she has always been right on the mark.
As for the complaints that this book is considered 'absolute truth' by some is not Ms. Leisch's fault. She states within the first two paragraphs of her Introduction that there were women in the 1860's that did not follow the norm and styles of the day, just as today's women have a mix of different looks and do not always follow the trends. If some take what she writes of the past styles as gospel, well, then I guess that is their own doing.
Now, why is a guy interested in a book such as this?
My wife and I (as well as our children) are reenactors in a Civil War unit and, as all reenactors should do, we try to learn all we can of life during that period in time. We are striving to represent as accurately as we can the personas we have chosen, which means lots of research and double checking. By reading of the social history of the time - the how's and why's of both sexes - can one truly immerse themselves into the past.
Anyone of us living in our modern day and age can easily describe what women wear today, just as, I'm sure, the same sort of folk could have 145 years ago. But, with books such as this one, we can at least make a very accurate attempt to emmulate those who lived a century and a half ago, and to understand the why and wherefores of the styles of another age.
Ms. Leisch has done a find job in this book as well as her book An Introduction to Civil War Civilians. She's done her homework in both cases.
A good resource, BUT..........2004-08-13
...take it with a grain of salt. This is an excellent overview of period fashions, but unfortunately it's become the reenactor's bible. Ms. Leisch is not a historian and I find it difficult to believe that one person found the absolute truth from such a relatively small sampling of photos. Yes, Godey's Lady's Book was the "Vogue" of today, but since the dawn of tim less-affluent women have copied the fashions of the well-to-do in more affordable fabrics. I've seen reenactors chastised or expelled from events "because you're too old for this outfit" etc using ONLY this book as the basis. (I have a daguerreotype of my great-great-grandmother, age 35, middle class, in a Zouave jacket, with her hair parted on the side, by the way)
Who Wore What?: Women's Wear 1861-1865.......2003-11-13
Wonderful book! Many great pictures with good detail. Drawings and text explain fashion details. A must of anyone wanting to reproduce a historically correct dress!! Very Interesting.

Product Description
BEST NUMBER
Who wore what... with distinction
Go ahead, ask sports fans the numbers of their favorite players, and they'll rattle them off in a heartbeat. Derek Jeter? 2. LeBron James? 23. Peyton Manning? 18. Dale Earnhardt Jr.? 8. That one you've probably seen on enough back windshields that you don't even need to be a fan to know it.
Numbers have been a part of sports lore since they first appeared on uniforms back in the Roaring '20s. Undeniably, players Hall of Fame playershave become known by the numbers they wore. 32: Sandy Koufax. And Jim Brown. And OJ. Simpson. And Magic Johnson. And don't forget Shaquille O'Neal. Or Bill Walton. Or Marcus Alien. Or Franco Harris. Or Steve Carl ton. Or Karl Malone.
But who's the bestthe very best-player ever to wear 32? Or who's the best 44: Reggie Jackson, Hank Aaron or Jerry West?
SPORTING NEWS, which has 120 years of covering sports as a foundation, has made those decisions. And 98 more just like them.
Go behind the scenes as Best by Number recounts amazing anecdotes of why players chose or were assignedtheir famous numbers. Check out the list of greats and some not-so-greatswho made a number famous. But most important, join the debate after SPORTING NEWS tells you - most authoritively, of course - who was the best of the best, 0 - 99. There's no way you can guess them all. That's a guarantee. some surprise selections take care of that.
So, who will it be at No. 4: Bobby Orr or Lou Gehrig? Or Brett Farve? We didn't expect easy decisions.

Classics.......2007-07-13
Here is where it all began. The original four issue limited series that kept going because of its runaway success. This volume includes issues 5 and 6 as well, a great beginning to an astounding 80 issue comic book series. Great story, and highly recommended. As a bonus, the black costumed spiderman from Secret Wars appears in issue #3. This is my favorite version of spiderman, and a great added element to an already entertaining story.
too old .......2006-02-07
Okay let me just tell you one thing this book has only the oldest transformers comics in it. It barely has any action at all in it. It has the original 1-6 transformers comics. It doesn`t have better artwork or a better story line. But if you want some old transformers comics I say go for these.
more than meets my standards.......2006-01-31
the origins of the shapeshifting robots is the best there is.ralf karate kid is pretty good.i like him and simon furman's graphic novels.for any serious collector this novel/comic is a no brainer.the original megatron is still the coolest decepticon ever ,soundwave being a close second.nobody beats prime in his prime!long live the original robots in disguise!
Pretty darn good.......2005-09-09
I am pleased to see that so much Gen1 stuff is being re-issued from the series to the comic books. I didn't get to read these as a kid due to living in Europe at the time, so these collections are great. If you're not a fan of the Transformers though the stories can seem a little hokey (like Spiderman's cameo). I like that the plot is a little more developed that the show's, and the fact that not all of the humans are thrilled with the Autobots appearance. If you like consistency there are some variations from the cartoon so be prepared. Also the end of "Beginnings" is a cliffhanger, so you may want to get vol 2 "New Order" as well. All in all it a fun ride for fans.
Great fun, for new and old fans alike.......2005-07-21
Reprints issues 1-6 of the original Marvel comics Transformers comics, Maybe you like me didn't get to try many if any issues as a kid, comics being hard to find, but you grew up loving the transformers thanks to the amazing toys and TV show, i know i was parked in front of the TV every time it was on and had my toys ready to play along.
Well i know they have some new stuff out there but the original was golden age of transformers, the stories were amazing, characters so good i still remember them till this very day, starscream, Optimus, hot rod and the rest.
wellI went out looking for transformer issues, i had issue #50, out of the 80 they made i had one single issue and i wanted more, turns out there are so many transformer fans the single issues can be $10 or more for a single issue, but thanks to titan books that will get you a trade here with 6 issues.
this is the first volume of 14, it's great and i must say just as good as you remember, the transformers find their way to earth, and the story really begins, the art is stunning, and when you think it's almost 20 years old you have to marvel at it.
any fan will want a copy of this, but non fans who have been thinking about it will want to try it, the action is great, stories are fun and epic, characters you will fall in love with.
maybe some day they will publish all the G.I Joe issues as well.

Book Description
It is NO secret that I am a BIG girl.
Always have been, always will be.
The only way I'll ever wear a size 6, or even a 16, is if you add them together. That's right: I wear a size 22. And I'm proud, because I wear it well.
Hell, even Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder can see that!
Such is the life -- and largesse -- of Mo'Nique, one of America's best-loved plus-size personalities. "I really wish I didn't have to write this book," writes Mo'Nique. "But it appears I have no choice. Especially when BIG girls are still subjected to ridicule simply because we've been blessed with a few extra pounds." In Skinny Women Are Evil, Mo'Nique strips away the stigma of being weight-challenged and introduces a new vocabulary in which F.A.T. is FABULOUS AND THICK and a woman who is "skinny" is just plain evil. Why? Because America gives them the comfortable airline seats, the fashionable clothes, and the lead roles in the Hollywood blockbusters. So how can a F.A.T. girl learn to operate in the it's-a-small-world after all? In this hilarious, heartwarming book, women of all sizes, shapes, and colors can benefit from Mo'Nique's Fat Girls' Survival Tips, a handy Thin-O-Meter, and a generous portion of advice about dating, eating, dressing, undressing, and much more.
Skinny Women Are Evil is Mo'Nique's testament to living large and loving it. So go on, dig in!
Customer Reviews:
Perpetuates stereotypes.......2007-09-04
Yes, this book is funny as get out...but I can't recommend it.
First, why is it necessary to put down one type of person to make another person feel better? If the title had been "African American People are Evil" and it had been written by a Caucasian author, that would have been offensive. While it would be an exaggeration to say that this title is EQUALLY offensive as that one, this is an offensive title.
Second, being dangerously overweight isn't something to celebrate. Obesity is epidemic in this country, diabetes is rising among schoolchildren, and saying that it is not only okay, but worth celebrating is irresponsible.
I'm looking forward to the day when she can write a book titled: Every Woman is Beautiful.
I Loved this Book! .......2007-06-13
Monique you go girl! As for the person who asked why if Monique was so confident then why wasn't she married, well FYI she is married and has a son. Check the back cover of the book for this info. I can't help but wonder if this person even read the book. And who cares if Monique weighs 220 or 400? I think she's gorgeous and I'll bet she's laughing all the way to the bank! How many people out here posting can say the same? I don't think this book is about putting down skinny women so much as boosting the confidence of bigger women. I was an overweight child and I took many cruel comments for it and I can relate to what Monique has to say here. Keep up the good work Monique!
I LOVE Monique, but the book.brought only moderate enjoyment.............2007-05-11
I purchased this book and thought it would be more motivational for thick women and less hateful towards skinny women. Truth be told, I tend to harbor a little bitterness toward the skinny, but I must admit that there are plenty of skinny women who are not evil. I'm not exactly obese, but at about 30 lbs overweight, I am a thick girl. I can identify with some situations in the book, like the clothing stores not having my size and the occasional "are you pregnant?" But I can definitely see how a lot of people were offended by this book. At times, I even felt a little offended, like when she downs skinny people for eating habits and excercises....skinny girls aren't the only ones who excercise and try to eat healthy!!!! For example, I don't eat red meat, potatoes, rice, bread or pasta (unless it's absolutely necessary!). Sometimes when I order my food, people (even skinny ones) look at me like I'm crazy because I'm eating a double turkey burger with extra cheese, extra pickles with no bread and no fries. But besides all the skinny insults, the book wasn't that bad. It was interesting and gave the reader insight into monique's life. Her book was just like her stand up routine...full of profanity and skinny hating.....but I don't seroiusly think she meant to offend anyone who loves her, regardless of their size. But, be realistic, when you bought a book by Mo'nique called "skinny women are evil" what were you expecting it to say??
Author of Poetic Thoughts from the Heart of a Woman.......2007-04-06
I found Mo'nique and Sherri A. McGee's humor to be refreshing and laughable in this particular book. Being one of the "Quote" Skinny women of the world has its ups and downs as well. Thanks to Mon'nique and Sherri for helping us to find a little humor and allowing us to let our hair down in order that we may experience big or small laughter in ourselves and in others.
a funny read.......2006-12-19
I'm not a woman and I'm not 'big', but I do like a funny book and there's a certain richness and pride in Mo'Nique's book which I quite enjoyed. It's a harmless easy and fast read and is likely to put a smile on your face if you enjoy humorous books/bios ;-) Other humourous books/bios I recommend: John Leguizamo, Margaret Cho, Ellen Degeneres

A nightly read for me.......2002-01-07
I once saw Siskel and Ebert speak in Cleveland, Ohio. After they tossed opinions back and forth about the great and not-so-great films of that year, a person in the audience asked them how they differed as critics. Without hesitation, Gene said he was repeatedly outdone by Roger's ability to write beautiful essays. Beautiful, he said. And in this book, you are continuously hit with just that. Roger Ebert has the ability to distill the essence of a film in words that often leave me amazed. He is able to pinpoint the exact moment in a film that doesn't leave you, the moment that stays with you for days, and is able to describe the human dimensions beneath that moment with insightful detail and accuracy. As an avid fan of film, I repeatedly turn to Roger Ebert's Video Companion, not because I want to know whether or not I should watch a movie. But because I learn a little bit more about life from his reviews.
To like or dislike that is the question..........2000-04-29
On one level, I like this book. Ebert's witty and insightful reviews truly are enjoyable to read. I enjoy reading about films I know I'll never see.
I also enjoy the added features, such as the Film Clip interviews, essays, and obituaries as appendices at the end of the book.
On the other hand, I dislike the fact that many of the movies I want to read about are not in the book. I'm surprised at how many times I have turned to the book looking for a review only to come up empty handed. There can be nothing more disappointing. Granted, the book is thick enough as it is, but perhaps Roger could shorten his reviews and pack more into a volume.
Informative.......1999-09-14
Roger Ebert, by my opinion, is the greatest living film critic out there writing today. He brings a touch of intellectuality to his reviews. They are really informative and interesting. Those who say they are too long must not enjoy reading or being well-informed on a film's intellectual issues. Of course, like a good film critic, I don't always agree with his ratings (I totally disagree with his arguement on giving four stars to "The Last Temptation Of Christ"). But mostly I do, and his video guide is the best out there. I also enjoyed the fact that he keeps old reviews in print. It's interesting to read his comments on films such as "Scarface," "JFK," "Natural Born Killers," and "Apollo 13." Ebert embodies in his books how film criticsm should be approached. He makes Leonard Maltin look like a momma's boy or boy scout (he obviously didn't understand the message in "Natural Born Killers" and obviously coulden't reach the peak of intelligence Ebert shows here). In the area of video guides, Ebert's continues to be the best. I hope he keeps them coming!
Fails to serve its purpose.......1999-06-16
When I say that Gene Siskel was the better critic (and writer), it's not just sentiment talking. How in the heck does one give **** to so many perfectly average movies (like "L.A. Story") as Ebert does in his book? The biggest fault with this annual collection is that it completely fails in its intention. Ebert seems to think of this as a more in-depth version of Leonard Maltin's guide but who needs to read a full-length review of a movie to determine if it's worth a rental or watching on the late show? A better idea for Ebert would be to just issue a complete volume of his work through the years instead of dumping the same reviews (with some additional material to make it "new") on the market year after year.
More essay collection than standard review book..........1999-03-27
This is a great book. Ebert's writing style is solid and his reviews are in depth and on the mark. The only slight problem, or maybe misconception, I had with the book was that it isn't the review book you've come to expect. Instead of a quick blurb on if the film is good and worth watching, this book contains full length reviews which are a lot more comphrehensive than most review books (sometimes a little too much info is given, spoiling things if you haven't seen the film). If you're in the market for a book to give you brief good/bad reviews of films, try the Leonard Maltin book, but if you want more essay-like reviews this is for you. It does come with a small booklet with star ratings only for most films.

Book Description
Recent innovations in musical instrument design are not simply a response to the needs of musicians, writes Paul Theberge; they also have become "a driving force with which musicians must contend." He argues that digital synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers in studio production and in the home have caused musicians to rely increasingly on manufacturers for both the instruments themselves as well as the very sounds and musical patterns that they use to make music.
Musical practices have thus become allied with a new type of consumer practice that is altogether different from earlier relationships between musicians and their instruments as a means of production. Theberge places these developments within a broad social and historical perspective that examines the development of the musical instrument industry, particularly the piano industry, the economic and cultural role of musicians' magazines and computer networks, and the fundamental relationships between musical concepts, styles, and technology.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Evaluation of Modern Music.......2004-12-07
An exceedingly well researched and elegantly written text explaining the social and cultural impact of electronic music and especially synthesizer technology on musicians of all levels. This is a most important piece of work, and while written at an almost "academic" and scholarly level, is a book every modern musician will find valuable.
chock full of intelligent insights.......2000-07-10
Amidst all the inflated rhetoric that either denounces technology for making music "inauthentic" or celebrates it for creating new postmodern forms of community, Paul Theberge's "Any Sound You Can Imagine" is a welcome oasis of intelligence. Rather than choosing sides in what often becomes a simplistic debate, Theberge provides a balanced account that, uniquely, puts digital instruments in a broad social and historical perspective. This book has much to recommend it, but the high points for me are the last several chapters, in which Theberge formulates a theory of how instruments work not only practically but symbolically, that goes beyond almost any other book on the subject. As such, "Any Sound You Can Imagine" is heady stuff, but it's also accessibly written. Anyone who thinks they know something about electronic music, whether it be techno or the electronic avant garde, should read this book and see how many of their assumptions are left standing at the end.

Book Description
Ready for something that really tests your brainpower? These puzzles--taken from the celebrated pages of The New Yorker magazine--offer more challenges per "empty square" than the average crossword! Every cryptic has a twist, a little something extra, a double-dose of difficulty. That's because the clues all have two parts: a definition half and a wordplay half, with anagrams, reversals, containers, and lots of other word games built in.
Customer Reviews:
Great book to keep in car, good starter book.......2007-09-11
Easy (in terms of cryptic) crosswords that can be solved in about 1/2 hour. Mostly U.S. style, following strict clue construction rules. Few esoteric foreign words and places. Clues are not simply constructed using a computer thesaurus and anagram program. Nicely crafted. Very enjoyable, the best "easy" book I've seen. Spiral format is great.
Fun!.......2007-07-07
The spiral bound format and good quality paper is great for puzzling. Two puzzles are squeezed onto every page, so there isn't loads of room for anagramming and such next to the clues, but there's space in the margins.
The puzzle formats are non-standard for American cryptics--there are no black squares. Bold lines indicate the ends of words, and all the grids are 8x10. At least half the letters in any given word are also used in crossing words, but you don't have the strict every-other-letter format. So for EARTH, you'd might pick up E_RT_ from other answers.
The answers have both grids and quick clue breakdowns (a couple of clues do get deeper explanations). The answers to adjoining puzzles are on different pages, so you don't accidentally see answers to the next puzzle.
As everyone else has stated, the puzzles are manageable, but still challenging (and the clues are always fair!). A great cryptic crossword puzzle book.
Great first book on cryptics.......2006-08-11
This book has been my constant companion. The spiral format makes it durable and easy to use. A good first book on cryptics. Hard enough to be fun, easy enough to be solvable, although I've yet to find one I can do in an hour. (2 hours was my best time so far).
I would appreciate for some a bit more elaboration on some of the answers, since the audience has been beginners.
I do hope these puzzlers write another book in the same format.
Nice book of cryptics.......2005-10-20
I've been learning to do Cryptics from Games Magazine (they have 2 in each issue), and this set from the New Yorker is, as others have said, easier. Still very nice and satisfying for those who like to roll through one in under an hour. They are light, but light in the realm of Cryptics. The instructions and tutorial puzzles are excellent for the beginner.
The quality of the book is excellent. The pages are nice and thick (so the ink doesn't run through). For something meatier try: ISBN 0812935128.
Puzzling.......2005-09-07
I love cryptic crosswords! Sometimes the answer is intuitive, but most of the time clue analysis is required.
This book lists the puzzle author with each puzzle, so it is easy to find a pattern between author and puzzle completion. Another plus- the answer portion is nonsequential, so that you can get a hint without getting the answers to the next 3 puzzles. Of course, it's most fun when you don't use the help at all!
I would classify these puzzles as medium in difficulty, certainly not as hard as some I've seen. Nontheless, they are challenging. I like to work on a set of puzzles at a time. If I get stuck on one, I move on to the next and continue in a cyclic manner.
I would suggest this book to those who may be: new to cryptics, bored with regular crosswords, casual puzzle solvers, and anyone who loves a good pun. I do not recommend these for those accustomed to difficult cryptics.

Customer Reviews:
Customer Evangelists provide the Best Marketing Bang for Your Buck!.......2007-05-20
BUY THIS BOOK TODAY. Read it. Put it in action, be consistent, and reap the rewards of innovative customer loyalty efforts. The book teaches many powerful concepts, such as:
- Focusing on solving customer needs
- Putting the customer's success at the heart of your business relationships
- Making them feel special, create "clubs" and "communities" for your customers to participate
- Creating "causes" for them to be emotionally attached to, deliver unequalled service and show genuine interest in what they do and how you can help them to do it better.
- Being loyal to customers, and they will be loyal to you. Remember, customers are loyal to people, NOT products.
- Creating genuine buzz about your company (and how to do it).
- Sharing knowledge openly with prospects and customers, instead of hoarding it.
A multitude of examples are given, showing step-by-step how to duplicate the concept in real-world practice.
This book is worth every penny for those willing to take the risk of breaking away from traditional, interruption marketing and enable their customers to become their evangelists.
Once we get them to that point, the best thing to do is to keep out of their way and let them do their work -- then watch your business grow. I have already seen the impact in our firm.
Best of success to you!
Explains a few things.......2007-05-14
This book is great for any business owner. It also puts into perspective the new kinds of very effective marketing that we get targeted with day to day (like being asked to provide this review). Its an easy read too.
Non nova sed nove.......2007-05-09
A great book in line with Guy Kawasaki's Selling the Dream. It's not just a me-too book.
If you want your customer to become your best sales people, don't pass this book by. Invest in it and into Ben Mc Connell's Citizen Marketers: when the people are the message, as well as in Andy Sernovitz's Word of mouth marketing.
If you're making an e-commerce website, you would simply be a fool not to study the subjects covered by this book. It can also actually be applied to any modern form of communicaton including blogs. The only (small) critic which may be presented is that the author's approach is top-down when good word of mouth is, most of the times, user-generated (see MySpace and YouTube)
The author however did a really good job. Worth not only your money but devoting some of our precious life time to learn from it.
Evangalize YOUR customers.......2007-02-22
A very handy book covering the topic of evangalizing customers. Should be read by all marketing people:
A true word-of-mouth marketing bible.......2007-01-21
This is my second book on viral marketing and I am falling short of words for Ben and Jackie's writing style. My first book on the topic was Mark Hughes's Buzzmarketing but I recommend reading this book as well for its unique way of describing how to make your customers your outspoken "evangelists", influencers who can drive sales of your company.
AS mentioned by other reviewers, authors have discussed casestudies from Southwest Airlines, Krispy Kreme, Build-A-Bear Workshops, the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, Pallotta TeamWorks, O'Reilly & Associates, SolutionPeople and IBM. Some may argue that Krispy Kreme's share is trading at $12 and the company has not been doing good. Please note, the downfall is because of their management problems and not because of their hot marketing style. They built an experience around a product and got customer involved and connected.
I highly recommend this book to all start-up business owners.
