    Book Description

The work of Alois Riegl (1858-1905) has been highly influential in art history of the modern age. Riegl, the most important member of the so-called Vienna School, developed a refined technique of visual or formal analysis that departed from the iconological method, which emphasized decoding motifs through recourse to texts. Riegl also pioneered understanding of the changing role of the viewer, the significance of non-high art objects (or what would now be called visual or material culture), and theories of art and art history, including his much-debated neologism Kunstwollen (the will of art). His major works include Foundations for a History of Ornament, Late Roman Art Industry, and The Group Portraiture of Holland. Riegl's Historical Grammar of the Visual Arts, which brings together the diverse threads of his thought, is now available to an English-language audience, in a masterful translation by Jacqueline E. Jung. In one of the earliest and perhaps the most brilliant of all art historical surveys, Riegl addresses the different visual arts within a sweeping conception of the history of culture. His account derives from Hegelian models but decisively opens onto alternative pathways that continue to complicate attempts to reduce art merely to the artist's intentions or its social and historical functions.

Fashion fanatics with a passion for the past will find a smorgasbord of wearable oldies in this new study by an expert in twentieth century fashion. Focusing on the great styles that emerged from the diverse eras between 1925 and 1965, the text places the clothing in its cultural habitat while more than 350 beautiful color photographs demonstrate the quality fabrics, dynamic designs, and careful workmanship that made the clothing last, both in condition and popularity. Chapters cover couture designers whose vintage clothes can be found on the market today, with chronologically arranged coats, suits, dresses, lingerie, handbags, shoes, and hats. 3 out of 5 stars Vintage Style 1920-1960.......2007-08-19

This book is packed full of photographs and is very informative, but if mannequins are going to be used to exhibit the garments, as is often the case, then time has to be taken to pin them in to make sure they look good on. Some of the garments photographed are just hanging loosely and the overall photography of this book (focus and lighting) has a dull feel to it. A bit of a shame because the content is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource Book.......1999-07-07

Though a bit expensive, this book is well worth the money! We sell vintage clothing and this has been an invaluable resource guide. I return to it time and time again. Packed with beautiful color photos...descriptions...glossary...great period millinery ads. A must for the collector or dealer in vintage clothing!

I've said it before (this would three times now on Amazon ;)) and I'll say it again: PvP is a wonderful comic strip! If you're an 80's child, gaming nerd, or even just a fan of well produced and genuinely funny comics...you should find a lot to like here. This is another wonderful collection of great strips. If you're followed the comic online, you may run into some storylines that you've gone through before. Personally, I think I've enjoyed reading through them again in the collected format more than I did getting the daily "zing!" comics (not to say that I don't still read it online...). This collection features some great in-jokes that comic book (I'm talking the guys and gals in tights who throw cars variety) and SciFi/Fantasy fans should really enjoy when the cast attempts to make the ultimate FAN FILM. Cat fans (especially those like my wife) will love Scratch Fury the cat.

3 out of 5 stars The "Hollow Man" Has Had a Solid Career........2002-04-04

This book is a companion piece to the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game. I've played the game a few times, but I never actually knew there was a real 'board game' game of the game until recently. I figured that the book might help me learn a bit more about that wonderful actor, Kevin Bacon, and give me an edge over my croonies in crime the next time we play the game. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot here. The book is quite short and basically consists of a bunch of "six degrees or less" lists. The introduction by Kevin Bacon himself is interesting to read and so is the history of the game. The book also has a Kevin Bacon filmography that is rather informative. However, the book needs an update because Bacon's been in several films since 1997. This book is great for any fan of Bacon, any serious film buff, and anyone who likes to play the game. If you don't fall into one of those categories, don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars BRAVO MR. GINELLI.......2002-03-02

This is a charming commentary on the prolific career one of America's premier thespians. In this modern classic, Mr. Ginelli truly captures the essence of Mr. Bacon's career on the big screen. Like a barefoot jaunt through a flowery meadow, this novel captivates all of the readers senses. Thank you Mr. Ginelli for this masterpiece of modern literature.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant.......2001-02-16

Wow! I was very surprised that a group of enebriated college punks could come up with such I clever idea. There parents and friends must be so proud. My final thoughts are "Good book, Great game". Thanks guys.

              5 out of 5 stars FINALLY.......2006-01-01

I finally found this guide book! i've been to 5 book stores, 4 game stores, 3 wal-marts, 2 targets, and 3 different online buying sites and ive finally found it! I think this guide book is awsome.

              4 out of 5 stars It's an Okay Guide.......2003-07-22

This isn't a bad selection for a Metroid Prime guide. It has all the essentials of the guide. A complete walkthrough with complete coverage of the game and even tells you about Samus' abilities. I don't like that they don't cover all the cheats. Not only that, but the fact that there is no other Metroid Prime guide out there besides VERSUS BOOKS that will give me an Original Metroid walkthrough! A players guide for that is hard to find. This guide only gives tips to playing Metroid but nothing more.

Also, the guide could've used more screens in a few areas to better detail everything. There is a lot of text in this guide and not enough screens. The layout isn't bad and at least if I need some help I can quickly refer to the guide for advice. I'm still peeved that there isn't any other guide other than VERSUS BOOKS (which is already out of print by the way) that would give me an Original Metroid walkthrough.

What I have to say to this...it's almost impossible to find a guide to Metroid Prime that won't help you through the game. This one is a great find for Metroid Prime but if you can find it, I'd highly recommend the VERSUS guide as opposed to this.

              3 out of 5 stars It's a Guide.......2003-07-16

Since it is a guide I have to give it 3 stars. But do you really need a guide??? I have found this out myself, there are 250 missiles in this game which means 50 expansions. I have personally counted the number of rooms to be 115. So if you take the number of rooms in the game(115) divided by(/) The number of missle expansions(50) 115/50 you get 2.3 so in about every other room there is a missle expansions. Of course there is the occasional room that has more than one expansion it so just look everywhere. But the missle expansions make a slight humming noise if you are any where near them. So with that in mind you don't really need a guide because Energy Tanks stick out like a sore thumb and every thing else (wave and ice beam etc.) sets out in the middle of the room in plain sight.and to get 100% in the log book you just have to put on the scan visor and look around in every room. Simple, no??

              5 out of 5 stars Hmmmmm.......2003-04-21

Just because it is a "statagy guide" I would give this one star, but if you are looking for cheats, this is a very good book, it does give away a bit too much though. However, This does diserve four stars, not three, so I'm going to counteract the three. now it's four.

              3 out of 5 stars Metroid Strategies.......2002-12-23

This is supposed to be a cheat book right? I mean, come on if your going to help me finish this game, at least give me coherant pictures of the game. The words don't make any sense either. Come on Doug Walsh!!!

How disappointing.... Metroid Prime has a great walkthrough and the guide shows strategies on beating the toughest bosses, but not with Fusion! Come on Prima! I'm not trying to criticize you or anything, but I know you can work a little harder.

This is definitely one of the better guides I've seen for Metroid Prime. I'd give it a five but there are about two things that bother me about the guide (see below).

First of all, the guide has a very detailed and easy to use walkthrough. I loved it. Easy to follow and easy to read with great detailed maps and plenty of screenshots (which you'll undoubtably need!). There is a maps section before the walkthrough and then they show the maps again before each section of the walkthrough, which makes for far less page flipping.

The Metroid Prime section gives you the run down on everything you need for all of Samus' abilities and how to obtain them in this highly detailed walkthrough. The screenshots are clear although at times they can be a bit darker than others. Some screens are actually very hard to depict what they're trying to tell you even with the text standing out. I wouldn't consider the terrain you venture through in Metroid Prime to be quite that dark.

The Metroid Fusion section of this guide is very useful if you want to complete the entire game. Much like Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion maps seemed more like a grid and Prima did a very good job in these maps by highlighting hidden areas along the way. Using this guide it is nearly impossible to get yourself lost (although the game makes sure you don't get lost either...). Again, a run down on all Samus' abilities and a full walkthrough to help you get everything you need to defeat SA-X and save the universe! A great companion in deed. The screens are still a little darker in this section but because of the fact that Metroid Fusion has a bit more lighting in some areas than Metroid Prime, you can much more easily depict these.

My gripes with the guide. Well first of all, for Metroid Fusion it doesn't depict how to get all the different endings of the game. I do not believe they did this in Metroid Prime either. Also, there is no walkthrough for the original Metroid. This isn't too bad of a problem but the first Metroid game presents probably one of the greatest challenges in the series (aside from Prime of course) and I need more than just basic "tips" that I've already come to learn by playing other Metroid titles. My thrid gripe of course is the dark screens but they are crystal clear and you shouldn't have a problem trying to make out anything in the Metroid Fusion section.

Overall, this guide is probably your best friend in completing both of these titles. It's nice to see that there was a guide publisher that took Metroid Fusion into consideration. Both guides are good and WILL help you find everything with little hassle.

              So...

              The Good
+Complete walkthrough for Metroid Prime and Fusion
              +Detailed Maps for both section
+Nice thorough walkthrough for both sections
              +Crystal clear screenshots

              The Bad
              -Game endings aren't revealed
-Metroid Prime screens are a little dark at times
-No NES Metroid walkthrough, just "Tips" on how to go through the game.

While the last con isn't a problem it would've still been nice to include a short walkthrough at the least being that it is a secret of the game.

4 out of 5 stars Almost everything you need.......2003-02-21

Prima did us a big favor by including both new Metroid games in one guide. Since the games were both released at the same time and they even connect together to unlock certain special features, it is fitting that they should be tacvkled together in one guide. It also saves you some extra cash.

The book starts off with the Metroid Prime section (the reason I purchased the book) and goes over detailed descriptions of all the weapons, armor, visors, power-ups, etc. This is followed by a map section that displays each world and approximate locations of hidden items and upgrades.

Next is the "walkthrough". This area is very detailed and is broken into sections based on the big item you are hunting. For instance if the section is called "Ice Beam" then the text tand photos that follow are all leading you to that item, with the occasional pit stop to grab available upgrades.

I have very little to complain about except that some screenshots are dark or grainy and hard to make out.

A big part of Metroid Prime is scanning items, locations, data, creatures, etc. When you scan something, it is added to your log book for future reference. If you manage to get 100% of the items in the game and scan every item your log book requires, then you get the best of 3 possible endings to the game. Unfortunately, while the book has a nice list of every item and scanned object, the walkthrough will sometimes run you right by an area without warning you that a scanable object is near you. So I suggest keeping an eye on the walkthrough AND the log book check list to make sure you collect everything you need to make that elusive 100% score.

Unfortunately I do not own a Gameboy Advance, so I am unable to fairly grade the Metroid Fusion section. However that game is not as complex as Metroid Fusion, so I imagine the writers' thoroughness shows in that section of the book also. The screenshots in the Fusion section are much clearer, and again it also has an item section and maps. Since this game resembles Super Metroid so much, the maps are laid out in a similar fashion to the automap feature of Super Metroid, in a sort of grid fashion.

The book has been very helpful, particularly with strategies against Boss monsters and well-hidden items. Metroid Prime has no cheat codes at this time so read those strategies carefully, because they WORK and these Bosses are no pushovers.

              Well worth your money.

                Book Description

Experience marketing is the method behind some of the best inventions and most innovative ideas in business today, effectively observing the way real people act in real situations. It has produced the Walkman, the iPod, drive-through check-ins, low-cost flights, and even the way NASA teaches safety to astronauts. Traditional market research relies on the use of interviews and focus groups, however, watching customers in shops, at hotels, and on the streets is a faster and more direct way to analyze consumer behavior, as demonstrated in both anecdotal stories and actual case studies. Experience marketing is also the common sense formula by which small business owners and corporation executives alike need only see their customers in action, imagine how they feel, think of better ways to serve them, and act upon them.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars INTUITION & SUCCESS.......2006-05-11

this is an excellent book packed with practical case studies that show why intuition is an absolutely vital part of business success. This is not some flakey PR idea, the authors show why we must stop paralysis by analysis, watch what is happening in our market, understand the emotional context, think through an innovative idea & execute it. Better still they provide practical tools to show us how to get in front of our competitors!

5 out of 5 stars A welcome return to instinct.......2006-02-27

Smith & Milligan's book is part of the new wave of business thinking that legitimizes the use of raw instinct to shorten decision-making and improve its quality. The authors stress that to start using instinct more you have to be physically in touch with your market - use your senses to absorb what is going on, rather than be insulated from it and only receive your business information through reports and statistics. It's full of examples that bring the authors' core messages to life - such as the billionaire retailer Philip Green's habit of walking around his stores in the dead of night so that he can walk where his customers will be walking tomorrow, see what they see, touch what they will touch and so on. A powerful argument for getting bosses out of board rooms and out to where the action is.
There's a realization in most organizations now that we over-complicate and over-analyze. Jack Welch's book Straight From The Gut and Malcolm Gladwell's Blink are part of the correction that we are going through, as we look to work faster, 'truer', and with more of an emotional connection to our customers and our work. Smith & Milligan's new book is a welcome contribution to this 'return to instinct' - full of practical examples of how to put it into action. Highly recomended.
