2 out of 5 stars Not a How To book!.......2005-04-02

This books has lots of pictures of beautiful, well photographed scarves; but I was very disappointed in the lack of technical instructions. Even as a moderately experienced semestress, I thought the "instructions" glossed over the difficult parts. I found very little help given in this book on how to make a professional looking scarf.

    3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Scarves--Directions so-so.......2001-02-14

If you are an experienced seamstress, this is a really nice book. There are many beautiful scarves in it, some with a lot of detail work.

For the rest of us, (who take the machine out occasionally to mend with) the directions are rather confusing. Also, there are only a few scarves that aren't too dressy to wear with jeans for a walk in the park, so you are going to be spending some $$$$ to make most of these designs.

I wanted to give this book three-and-a-half stars. Not for a beginner, but someone who really enjoys sewing would like this book, especially if they like to dress up--see if you can understand the directions first!

5 out of 5 stars A very stylish and inspiring book on scarves!.......2000-09-26

I was excited with the idea of creating my own scarves to accompany the clothes I make. Well this book helped me immensely to experiment with different embellishment techniques and ideas. Linda Lee has selected 13 artists (among them Marcy Tilton, Jane Conlon and Stephanie Valley whose books are among my favorite) each one presenting one or more scarves they made with a different style and a new approach to traditional techniques and materials. The scarves are very beautiful and stylish (!!) and the photographs are so good that many times I just go over them admiring Linda Lee's work.

But this is not just a book full of pictures of beautiful scarves. It is a well organized book comprising six parts each one concentrating on a different traditional approach to embellishing. Each part includes 5-6 different scarves with a list of materials, fabric notes, cutting instructions and full of clear and detailed instructions and illustrations on construction.

The first part of the book is focused on ribbon fantasy including "delicately hazy sheers, iridescent ribbons and open-weave lattices''. The second part of the book is focused on traditional arts including "the art of piecing, applique, cutwork and shadow work". The third part of the book is focused on contemporary interpretations to make interesting scarves by slashing, washing, shrinking etch. The fourth part of the book is focused on beads and baubles. The fifth part of the book is focused on senciled, stamped and stitched techniques to create very beautiful and original scarves. The last part of the book is focused on architectural shapes that are truly fun to make and wear !!

I highly recommend this book to any (beginner, intermediate or advanced) sewer that takes pleasure in creating special accessory pieces!!

3 out of 5 stars Complete Book of Scarves.......2001-12-06

This book has gorgeous pictures and great ideas, but it could use more illustrations to clarify the written instructions. It also lacks any resource listings which might help the reader locate some of the materials. In my opinion, it is more of an "idea and inspiration" book than a practical "how to" book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !.......2001-05-26

I thought I'd find great ideas, but instead I found weird photography that showed everything but scarves! I should have known better; I've bought other books from Jo Packham and found the same things.

4 out of 5 stars Decorate your Lampshades.......2006-11-11

Decorative beading features a variety of beaded projects using fringe. Although the book doesn't have the variety I expected (everything is based on fringe), I must admit I love the patterns for fringed lampshades. This is good, because lampshade patterns dominate the book.

                  Book Description

Pooch Café is creator Paul Gilligan's first syndicated strip, and this book collects the strips from its successful first year of syndication. When Poncho's beloved master Chazz marries cat lover Carmen and forces them to move in with her and her feline brood, Poncho's world is shaken to the core.Carmen's attempts to bribe Poncho with cheese cannot overcome his inexplicable but undeniable disdain for all things cat, and now that his home has become a haven for them, his only recourse is to seek refuge in the café, where he, Boomer, and his other canine pals pore over their top-secret plans to construct a giant catapult with which to hurl all the Earth's cats into the sun.As much as he dislikes kitties, he's equally passionate about his love for Chazz. Poncho will do just about anything to keep his position as man's best friend secure, including enduring the physical torments of Chazz's passion for biking, camping, and mountain climbing, which he can only get through with the help of classic Russian literature and a nice cup of tea. Pooch Café captures the intensity of the human-dog bond in a way that will resonate with pet lovers everywhere.

I was glued to the book, reading it from beginning to end in one hilarious sitting. Poncho and friends diabolical plans to rid his house of the evil cat invaders were hysterical! Paul Gilligan needs to write another Pooch Cafe book!! We need more...MORE!

5 out of 5 stars "...Off Flying in the Land of Meat...".......2004-04-14

Poncho is a dog's dog. He daydreams of meat, stuffs himself with kibble, and hangs out at the Pooch Cafe where dogs can be dogs and "cat" is a four-letter word. (Plus, he loves Jackie Chan and hates mushrooms -- a dog after my own heart!) I had never read the Pooch Cafe comics before purchasing this book, but was attracted by the subject matter and the artwork, which is both cool and quirky. The humor is subtle and smart. Whatever you're a dog person, a fan of comics, or both, Paul Gilligan has produced a very stylish work that is worth adding to your collection.

                  5 out of 5 stars Holy Chihuahua!.......2003-11-26

Actually, I'm not sure what kind of pooch Poncho is but he is without a doubt the greatest cartoon character since Calvin.

This book is loaded with great writing, unique art and the funniest punchlines since Larson.

                  Grab this collection -- it's a winner!

                  5 out of 5 stars best.......2003-07-10

pooch cafe is by far the funniest comic i have even read. its better than garfield and calvin&hobbes

                  5 out of 5 stars Sublime........2003-06-04

Pooch Cafe remains one of the most genuine comics available today in our papers and one of the funniest.

The most heartening thing about the strip is that Poncho knows what he's doing when he's drinking out of the toilet, or doing all the other things that a dog does and yet he can't help it. Because its in his nature. He is a dog and unlike make strips in which Cartoon dogs become mini-humans, Pooch Cafe retains the basic spirit and nature of the characters it protrays, letting each part stay true to itself.

It is lovingly illustrated and ultimately it has soul - a rarity in syndicated strips today.

A superb buy! Watch out for this man!

4 out of 5 stars this is why you need editors.......2005-01-30

In the voluminous and often self absorbed blogosphere, where can or should you start reading? This is similar to the pre-Web Usenet newsgroups. In both, it is easy to encounter poorly written or hastily composed screeds. A total waste of your time. But here Graham and Burton come to our rescue. They offer editorial choice. A nice filter. We see well chosen essays that are actually literate and interesting. (More so than my scribblings here.) The essays are fairly traditional in representation. None of the New Wave experimental fad of the late 60s. Possibly because once you've read hypertext in a browser, the traditional printed page can seem limited.

Which is also ironic. That these essays are all out there on the Web, freely available for your perusal. Yet here they are in a book.

Of the essays, those by the woman working in a porno store are the funniest. The graphic descriptions she provides of the clientele are memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Blogs for the Blogless.......2004-05-25

If you already read lots of blogs, this book may be redundant for you. I thought I knew what a blog was (some sort of Web journal logged in occasionally . . . almost like a personal diary), but had never read one. So I thought, well, why not read the best ones? That's what brought me to this book.

The authors searched thousands of blogs and submitted the better choices to a panel of three judges who rated each one. The highest rated blogs made it into the book, and the blog authors were interviewed. So the book provides you with both blogs and the reality behind the blogs.

The predominant style was to take ordinary events and slightly stretch and reform what happened to create humor. The method is much like that used by stand-up comics who like to poke fun at themselves. Much of the humor didn't work for me, but it certainly was offbeat. It seems like blogs operate in a less censored mode that much published writing. So you can learn a lot about the people who interact with the pornography at the video rental shops . . . if you really want to. If you dislike foul language and gross situations, this book may not appeal to you.

Lesser common styles involved taking you someplace where you thought you knew what goes on . . . but providing an insider's view of the reality instead . . . without exaggeration. The two best examples were of a public defender in California and a freelance reporter interviewing ordinary Iraqis during and immediately after the recent ouster of Saddam Hussein. I found the Iraq material to be riveting, and plan to follow this blog in the future.

I was impressed to see that published authors are doing blogs to provide writing practice, and to test out work on readers before "publishing" it in physical form. Of course, most bloggers are people who are unpublished and find this format appealing for its openness.

Fans of Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation) will enjoy reading about his life as an ordinary guy "celebrity." His description of the restaurant meal is priceless.

I think that the time I spent with this book was well rewarded, and I now know a lot more about blogs and blogging than if I had randomly checked out blogging sites.

I encourage you to learn more, too, if this is a relatively new subject for you.

If you're a blogger and enjoy the act of expressing your views and emotions online, you'll enjoy Never Threaten To Eat Your Co-Workers - Best Of Blogs (Apress). This collection of blog entries edited by Alan Graham and Bonnie Burton is a fun look at various blogs and bloggers that range from the well-known to the obscure. On one end you have a few blog entries by Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher of Star Trek: TNG fame). On the other end might be Ali Davis, the writer for True Porn Clerk Stories (she is a clerk in a video porn shop and writes about her experiences). The format is pretty simple... random samplings of some of their blog entries, along with short interviews asking about their motivation behind blogging and their views on the concept.

Some of the entries may have you laughing to tears ("Dear Cranky[...]") and some will make you think ("Clutching For Answers In Baghdad"), but all them will reflect the person behind the keyboard, no matter how quirky and real they may be. And in the interviews with the writers, you'll most likely see yourself, a fellow blogger who is sharing a small part of themselves with the world.

4 out of 5 stars What a blog can do for you.......2004-04-14

I enjoyed reading this collection of "some of the best bloggers". Actually, I think it was just some of the best blog entries they could find. Which is not to say they aren't good because I'm saying here I totally enjoyed the reading. Just don't forget there's more out there. After you get this book, don't forget to go to your local internet and browse!

                  Book Description

In the winter of 1992, nearly one hundred years after motion pictures were invented, the first nationally distributed feature by an African American woman was released in the United States. The film tells the story of an African American sea-island family preparing to come to the mainland at the turn of the century. In her richly textured, highly visual, lyrical portrayal of the day of the departure, Julie Dash evokes the details of a persisting African culture and the tensions between tradition and assimilation. Daughters of the Dust: The Making of an African American Woman's Film, which includes Dash's complete screenplay, describes the story of her extraordinary sixteen-year struggle to complete the project.

                  4 out of 5 stars a good book about a fascinating movie.......2001-10-24

Daughters of the Dust was a fascinating movie about the struggles of a female-headed, multigenerational family moving to the American mainland. It was made in fits and starts due to continual fundraising for the movie that Dash had to do. This book documents getting the movie made. It has a good section in which Dash and cultural critic bell hooks discuss the symbolisms in the film. Given that even Spike Lee has trouble raising money for his films, it is essential that incipient black filmmakers get advice on what they'r getting into. In that way, this book is an important first tool. Those majoring in film studies, feminist studies, or Afro-American studies will want to have this book.

                    4 out of 5 stars A fun sourcebook.......2003-01-08

My only problem with this book is that it seems useable almost exclusively for the Rokugan setting. As the title of the book sort of gives that away, I figure it's only fair to take off only one star for this minor flaw in an otherwise remarkable beastiary.

This opinion rests chiefly on the inclusion of the Taint statistic, which is really only useful in Rokugan. To be fair, it can be removed, and without really altering the balance of the book.

What I particularly appreciate about the book is that they don't assume that every creature that may have an extradimensional origin must be an "outsider," as most other books do. If a creature can be a part of the local ecology, it really can't be considered completely outside the ecology, so it can't really be an outsider. It's nice to see that here.

The illustrations are nice nough, although lacking in detail in some cases. At the very least, they match the monster descriptions, which is more than I can say for some of the Monster Manual descriptions. (I'm looking pointedly at the Grick here)

On the whole, these monsters should at least serve to get the imaginative juices flowing for non-Rokugan DMs, and prove an invaluable resource to those playing Rokugan.

3 out of 5 stars D20 Oriental Adventures Monster book.......2002-09-07

Creatures of Rokugan is a good source book for monster's in an oriental adventures campaing, however it lacks support for the previous d10 system.

The book is a collection of stats and good monsters description, but you wouldn't find any extraordinary source of good roleplaying information.

Some of this monsters will add some spice to your current d20 campaing, but is up to you if you want your adventurers to find a ghostly corrupted samurai in their next dungeon.

This should be mandatory for all High School students. Clearly teaches logical thinking and how to make the best choice

4 out of 5 stars Great Textbook on Problem Solving.......2006-10-25

This is a great book for anyone who needs to make important decisions. I'm with a professional services (consulting) firm, and we're about to make this book mandatory text for all our consultants. It's that good!

Morgan Jones starts off describing that human beings are bad decision makers, but kid themselves about their ability to make good decisions. Then, the book describes 14 tools that can be used to make decision making more structured and error-free. Each tool is described through a story, and has plenty of exercises to try out the tool. It even has the "solutions" at the back to verify your approach.

The book has a few shortcomings. For starters, it does not describe which situations each tool is most useful for. The sample exercises present the facts together - something that is unlikely to be replicated in real life. It also does not classify decisions as being big or small - some decisions are too small to apply structured tools presented here, while some decisions are too big to depend solely on these tools.

This book is written like a textbook. To get full value from The Thinker's Toolkit, you'd have to really participate in the exercises actively. If you're planning to skim through the book, then I'd recommend you drop this book and instead read "Making Great Decisions in Business and Life" by Henderson & Hooper.

To sum up, it's a great textbook if you're a consultant or would like to teach structured problem solving. Bring out your pen and paper!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent - probably the best in the field - easy to understand.......2006-01-31

I consider this to be a very `French' book. The French have the reputation of never getting a whole lot done due to their habit of extreme and unending analysis. No question goes unanswered. No possible rabbit trail left to surprise. Not a single contingency allowed. You'll be much more able to over-analyze using the techniques in The Thinker's Toolkit.

I actually love this book. It's basically a treatise on applied logic told in a very readable and useable way. Topics include developing weighted rankings, decision trees, the devil's advocate, and others. There are scores of graphics and asides to help in understanding the concepts.

Don't be put off by the title or the topics: the book is an excellent help for everyday decisions. For examples Jones discusses buying a car or purchasing insurance. He uses newspaper headlines throughout the book as topics for investigation. The entire work is very readable and equally as interesting. Definitely one of the best books on the subject.
