      Book Description

The multiple Harvey and Eisner Awards series collecting one of America's true national treasures, Krazy Kat.

This is the fifth in a series reprinting George Herriman's early 20th Century comic strip masterpiece. Most of these strips have not seen print since originally running in Hearst newspapers over 70 years ago. Each volume is edited by the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum's Bill Blackbeard. Krazy & Ignatz 1933-1934 will be a hot-baked brickbat of a volume, adance with nearly two full years of the Sunday Krazy Kat (Herriman did not use color until 1935), snug between multiple pages of Herriman extras, not the least of which include an introduction by Blackbeard, a new "Debaffler" page, and a stunning layout front and back and throughout by the inimitable Chris Ware!

Krazy Kat is a love story, focusing on the relationships of its three main characters. Krazy Kat adored Ignatz Mouse. Ignatz Mouse just tolerated Krazy Kat, except for recurrent onsets of targeting tumescence, which found expression in the fast delivery of bricks to Krazy's cranium. Offisa Pup loved Krazy and sought to protect "her" (Herriman always maintained that Krazy was gender-less) by throwing Ignatz in jail. Each of the characters was ignorant of the others' true motivations, and this simple structure allowed Herriman to build entire worlds of meaning into the actions, building thematic depth and sweeping his readers up by the looping verbal rhythms of Krazy & Co.'s unique dialogue.

      3 out of 5 stars Kaveat..........2006-02-11

I have nothing to add to the praise for Herriman's marvelous creation, which you can read about in the comments below. Anything I'd say to that effect would only echo what has already been written.

Alas, the 1933-1934 volume in the Fantagraphics release has some problems. It has nothing to do with a dropoff in the humor of the strip itself -- there was none, as "Krazy Kat" never experienced a noticeable decline in quality -- but with the print quality of the Sunday strips as they are presented here. Although I'm sure Fantagraphics did their best when they went through page after page of ancient newsprint drawn from who knows how many private collections to find the best possible specimens, the sad fact is that the majority of strips reprinted in this collection are blurry and shaky. This makes it very difficult to fully appreciate Herriman's skills with pen and brush, and worst of all, makes the subtle facial expressions and body language of the characters much harder to interpret. A small handful of pages, with sharp outlines and shadings, stand in contrast to the rest.

By all means, you should become acquainted with this wonderful comic strip if you aren't already. But you'd do much better to get the next volume in the series, A Wild Warmth Of Chromatic Gravy. Along with featuring the return of sharp, clear lines, "Gravy" is in full, vibrant color (pre-1935 Sunday strips were all black-and-white) and even includes an insert that features newly unearthed, better-quality scans of a few of this volume's worst offenders. This volume is strictly for Kat kompletists.

5 out of 5 stars George Herriman, Comic Genius........2005-08-23

The Fantagraphic series of Krazy Kat reprints is a fantastic journey back in time. The strange thing is that it could have been written yesterday.Anyone remotely interested in comic strips or cartoons needs to get as many of these volumes as possible.Krazy Kat came to life in his own strip in 1913.The same year Charles Chaplin made his first silent film.As a student of the Chaplin films, the first thing that came to mind was how Herrimans' comic strip reminds you of the work Chaplin did. This was not intentional I'm sure. They were geniuses of their time and in fact,of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Fantagraphics closes the gap.......2005-08-23

George Herriman created Krazy Kat as a "downstairs" strip to his The Family Upstairs. The devine Kat soon had a strip of his/her own, both daily and Sunday.

Hyperion press published the Family Upstairs strips from 1910 - 1911. Eclipse published the early black and white Sunday strips, 1916 - 1924, in volumes which also included the full color Saturday strips from 1922. Now Fantagraphics has published the rest of the black and white Sundays, 1925 - 1934, closing the gap between the last Eclipse book and the first full color Kitchen Sink book, which begins with the 1935 color Sundays.

The daily Krazy Kat strips are much harder to find. Pacific Comics Club has published (almost) complete years 1921 - 1923. Comics Revue monthly has published the dailies beginning in 1931 (currently they are finishing 1933). The Menomonee Falls Gazette published more than half of 1934 and 1935.

Krazy Kat ended when George Herriman died in 1944.

5 out of 5 stars The heppy lend gets closa an closa..........2005-01-05

Well, here we go again. Another sumptuous collection of one of the best comic strips ever published. Fantagraphics has more than fulfilled its pledge to keep the series going with this the 5th volume of Krazy Kat Sunday strips.

This installment, like all previous installments, has amazing bonus material. The first thirty pages include articles about Herriman and Krazy Kat, early pre-Kat Herriman strips (including "Baron Bean", "Mary's Home From College", "The Amours of Marie Anne MacGee", and "Embarassing Moments"), as well as some rarely seen Krazy Kat dailies. Also, the series editor announces that the next volume will be the first KOLOR KRAZY KAT edition. After 1934, the Kat et al appeared in amazing Kolor. So here stand bound the final black and white Krazy Kat Sunday pages.

And as always the book plumps with the justifiably famous Krazy Kat Sunday strips. Some of the strips had to be painstakingly reconstructed from papers that shrunk Herriman's original sized papers to miniscule proportions. All of the reconstructions are listed in the back of the book. Fantagraphics pulled this feat off with much gusto, as anyone can witness in the book.

For the initiates amongst us, the strip's main theme is love. Krazy, a Kat with indeterminate gender, loves Ignatz, a temperamental mouse. The only sign of affection Krazy can extract from Ignatz is a brick solidly and violently tossed at his skull. So, brick equals love to Krazy. Meanwhile, Offisa Pupp loves Krazy (in a rather repressed manner) and has made his mission in life to halt Ignatz's vile tossings. The entire strip revolves around this variation on a theme. Helplessness and hope in the face of seemingly hopeless love seeps out between the ink marks. Isn't it romantic?

Lastly, February 19th, 1933 has to be amongst Herriman's best "silent" strips. Krazy and Offisa Pupp ride a see-saw and Ignatz repeatedly picks up the brick, drops it, picks it up, etc... Be sure to translate the español on the wall separating the parties.

      Carry on, Fantagraphics, carry on...

      Book Description

With All the Trouble in the World, P. J. O'Rourke once again landed on best-seller lists around the country, confirming his reputation as the pre-eminent political humorist of our time. Attacking fashionable worries - all those terrible problems that are constantly on our minds and in the news, but about which most of us have no real clue - P. J. crisscrosses the globe in search of solutions to today's most vexing issues, including overpopulation, famine, plague, and multiculturalism, and in the process produces a hilarious and informative book which ensures that the concept of political correctness will never be the same again. "One of the funniest, most insightful, dead-on-the-money books of the year." - Los Angeles Times; "All the Trouble in the World is O'Rourke's best work since Parliament of Whores." - The Houston Post; "The dispatches are unfailingly funny....Mr. O'Rourke gets to the heart of the matter with a steady stream of wisecracks....Economists, political scientists and sociologists are inclined to approach the ills of society with regression analysis. P. J. O'Rourke just points and laughs. Not surprisingly, it is Mr. O'Rourke who gets it right." - The Washington Times; "Bottom line: Buy the book." - The Wall Street Journal.

5 out of 5 stars Funny as hell.......2007-07-04

Some disclosure - I'm a huge PJ O'Rourke Fan. Even so, this book, along with "Eat the Rich" is a classic.

Everytime you hear how messed up the US is, or how bad things are, or any other Chicken Little squawking pick this up. I've read it at least three times and it still cracks me up. It's a great perspective and makes you feel lucky if you live in the US. His books give me some of my best one-liners.

5 out of 5 stars Humor and logic... two great tastes that taste great together........2005-11-25

Even those who disagree with P.J. O'Rourke's conclusions will usually tell you that his manner of expressing those conclusions is highly entertaining. O'Rourke's dry wit and bizarely appropriate analogies are absolutely hysterical. I listened to this book at the gym and had several of those "weird guy laughing at nothing" moments that can make you an outcast in a hurry.

But besides being funny, O'Rourke applies sound fundamentals of economics and history to a very logical dissection of the world around us. Being written in 1993, some of this book's examples are dated, but the logic used to analyze them is just as instructive today as it was then, and most of today's issues possess close parrallels in O'Rourke's 90s examples.

The book reads lightly, but O'Rourke traveled to Somalia, Haiti, the Amazon, Vietnam and other hot spots in writing this book - he did serious work and has a serious philosophy underlying his humor.

Give this one a read and see the world the way the politicians would rather we didn't.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh and Learn .......2004-10-29

P.J. O'Rourke is the thinking man's John Stewart. Where Stewart is merely snarky and cutesy, O'Rourke has some actual working knowledge of the world, of history, and of human nature. In this book, he adroitly and hilariously skewers all of the "Henny Penny" sky-is-falling enviro-nazis who's holier-than-thou worship of nature is about to snuff out the human race. If you wonder why ideas like the Kyoto Protocol are so insane and ill-advised, read this book. If you've ever wondered about terrorist groups such as E.L.F., read this book. If you've ever had an unexplainable urge to snicker and hoot with derision whenever some earnest WASPy wannabe rasta mon tie-dyed tree-hugger begins to blather on about alar, read this book. In the midst of all of his cynicism and sarcasm, P.J. actually sheds a lot of light on some of the motivations, emotionalism, and deceptions of the far leftist enviro-whacko movement...how it is based in inaccuracy and ideological lunacy. He presents solid, well-researched facts in a way that is not dry, but delightfully pointed. This book is the archenemy of Al Gore's sci-fi thriller, EARTH IN THE BALANCE, and it blows the ex-Veep's book all to hell, and will leave the reader in tears of laughter. Check it out!

      2 out of 5 stars Funny...but not convincing........2003-07-08

Before I go on: Yes, I'm a liberal--I had to read this book in a English Comp II class taught by a libertarian professor.

O'Rourke's analysis, while scathingly funny, falls short of the mark due to sheer lack of evidence. His essay skewering environmentalism, for instance, provides NO scientific evidence for his claims (which was also a criticism levied by my professor). The pollution essay provides merely circumstancial evidence, and O'Rourke even admits he gave up trying to write about plague in Hatiti, and goes to talk about his visit to the black market and a voodoo shrine (which, I will admit, is terribly interesting).

Look, I think O'Rourke is hysterical. His one-liners are great, and yeah, he makes a few points. But the guy doesn't offer solid evidence, and the way he treats EVERY SINGLE liberal as a communist sympathizer is annoying.

Of course, if you do lean to the libertarian/fringe Republican side of the political spectrum then this review won't matter. For the rest of us, I give you fair warning.

It is fair to note that the book was last published in 1994, so it is rather out of date, if you are interested in purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars Skewer the liberals and roast their ideas........2003-02-18

P.J. O'Rourke gets it right. First time and everytime. I appreciate the logical perspective he puts on his selected issues. From population to pollution, he shows the liberal slant in reporting is not reality. Funny how the population of Bangladesh is frightening, but not in Fremont, California, though both places have the same density. O'Rourke has a fun writing style and a propensity to use words that makes many readers cringe as they reach for their dictionaries. The man is truely a master of his craft.

5 out of 5 stars her start, just her start.......2003-04-07

So this is her first book, from 1974. The way Jorie Graham feels now is that you'll have to pardon the youth of it. This book won't give you an idea of all the other amazing developments she's had in her career, for herself & for western poetry, but it is a showcase for her brilliant mind for metaphor & the sounds of poetry among other things. It'll show you how she started as a poet, so you can understand better her development as a poet. Besides that, it still gets 5 stars anyway for the brilliant, brilliant metaphor & thoughts throughout.

          5 out of 5 stars visceral mastery?.......2002-01-21

So when she first took up the craft of poetry, this is what she did. The poetics of the writing are not as difficult as her later work, but the thoughts are still huge concrete slabs of serious intelligence. It's still difficult, if not in precisely the same way as her later work, & it was clear from this book -- from the first few poems in this book -- that she had gigantic poetry inside her.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous debut.See where the great poet started!.......1999-07-01

This poetry is less compicated than Ms.Graham's newer poems.Though they still have that charm and profound ideas expressed in the most beautiful poetic language ever!Spring the few dollars for some poetic delight!

            Book Description

This is not your typical business book. You won't find academic remedies to your business challenges or exhortations to create a warmer and fuzzier workplace. In fact, you'll find the opposite-tips on how to be a tougher, take-no-prisoners-style manager. It's time to stop letting workplace political correctness push you around and get serious about your business.

In If You Don't Make Waves, You'll Drown, Dave Anderson doesn't pull any punches. Offering simple wisdom and politically incorrect solutions that really work, he's not here to inspire you, but to taunt you into action. He shows you how to be more direct without being disrespectful; how to give honest feedback even when it hurts; and how to hold employees accountable for results. In short, you'll learn how to get the most out of your business.

            Want more politically incorrect wisdom?

            5 out of 5 stars A lot of good leadership nuggets - 95% Enjoyable!.......2007-08-09

Dave Anderson delivers a very candid, straight-forward rant on the politically correct office politics that are polluting work environments. I particularly enjoyed "The Business Facts of Life". Anderson makes valid arguments and some of his rhetoric is a needed wake-up call for many companies that are traveling the slippery slope of political correctness in business life. I do feel that Mr. Anderson purposely tries to be controversial and in doing so leaves the reader a bit turned off and inclined to miss the good points that are made. Sometimes you have to make waves in order to succeed in business, however, the contention that waves have to be made as a strategy is silly and unproductive. If you don't make waves you'll drown does have some leadership lessons that are worth reading and although some examples used to support his ideas didn't resonate well with me, there are enough good points in the book to make it a profitable read. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Arrogant, Angry and a Re-hash of common sense ideas.......2006-10-05

Anderson preaches from the right which doesn't make him wrong but he writes with the certainty of the correctness of his "politically incorrect" positions. He uses these positions to re-hash some common sense ideas like rewarding performance and hiring competent employees no matter what their race, etc.

He could have said what he had to say in half the pages. On the other hand, if you like Rush Limbaugh...

3 out of 5 stars Management advice-- politically incorrect.......2006-10-03

Author Dave Anderson has a simple technique. He selects from outrageous news stories that he believes show an excess application of political correctness (that is, in his eyes, too much bending over backward to be fair) and uses them to get you angry. Then he offers basic management advice to counter the possibility that you might behave like the folks in the story. His wisdom from the work world is conventional, but he does imbue his text with personality, albeit sometimes negatively. He describes himself as a crusading truth-teller willing to speak out against conventional opinion. In fact, he writes - perhaps just in order to emphasize his ideas - in the voice of an arch conservative: anti-immigration, antiminority and, apparently, intolerant. In other words, Anderson seems quite proud that his politics are incorrect. His short doses of management advice arrive with that flag clearly flying. If you think that political correctness has gotten out of hand, and want to see the pendulum swing the other way, we believe that you'll be pretty pleased with this book.

5 out of 5 stars How to combat politically correct cancer from spreading throughout your business........2006-09-13

As a fan of merit-based achievement, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dave Anderson's If You Don't Make Waves, You'll Drown: 10 Hard Charging Strategies for Leading in Politically Correct Times. In this straightforward tome, Anderson, president of LearnToLead, an international sales and management training organization, describes techniques for combating the politically correct cancer spreading wildly throughout businesses in the United States.

His no-nonsense strategies for implementing a meritocracy provide a great model for leaders aspiring to encourage and reward innovation and results, and weed out the dead weight. Throughout this book Anderson gives examples of political correctness run amuck. In his well researched chapter, "Peering into the PC Cesspool," his examples are enlightening, true-to-life, and at times, frustrating.

Anderson relieved my frustration by providing clear directions for eradicating the overabundance of political correctness in business. He can be blunt, and his frankness can be a little unnerving. To his credit, Anderson warns his readers of his candid approach, which comes from a conservative Christian point of view.

Anderson's knowledge comes from his firsthand experience running his own successful business, and dealing with the complications and barriers that can result from political correctness gone awry. This is an excellent book for anyone attempting to overcome challenges of this nature.

5 out of 5 stars Great book and a real eye opener.......2006-04-21

I started reading the book in an Airport terminal, and I couldn't stop! What Dave Anderson has to say is honest, fair and most of all inspiring. This book caters to all, those starting out in the business world like myself, and those retired men and women who have experienced it all. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who wants great advice in their professional life.
