Book Description
Written by a leading child psychologist, this clearly written and practical book provides a template for interpreting change and meaning in children's lives through their play activity. It shows how each child's pattern of play has a distinct profile of measurable features. These can be identified - and can be used to assess the child's development.
The processes of change that a child goes through and the different kinds of play profiles are clearly illustrated with examples from real life. This will be a useful resource for all professionals who work with children and are looking to support their development through a deeper understanding of their inner experiences, including family therapists, educational psychologists, special needs teachers, play therapists and child care social workers.
Book Description
The most comprehensive and detailed history of shoes ever published, with more than 2000 specially drawn illustrations.
John Peacock charts the development of every kind and style of footwear from earliest times to the present day, for both men and women. His drawings reproduce in meticulous detail a host of representative examples from every era: the simple sandals of Ancient Egypt, made from natural fibers; exquisite Greek footwear of the "Golden Age," including boots made from rawhide with leather linings and leg bindings; richly embroidered and bejeweled shoes of the Byzantine empire; the fantastic pike-toed boots newly fashionable in the fourteenth century; the hugely exaggerated platform heels of the sixteenth century; eighteenth-century women's slippers of the finest silk; and a huge range of contemporary shoes, from sneakers and stilettos to the latest footwear in radical materials and experimental styles.
The pictures are arranged in six chronological sections and accompanied by full descriptions, including details of materials, heel and toe styles, decorations, and fastenings. An invaluable reference section includes a time chart summarizing the development of shoes throughout the centuries, a concise bibliography, and biographies and histories of the world's leading shoe designers and manufacturers, including Manolo Blahnik, Salvatore Ferragamo, Charles Jourdan, Roger Vivier, and Vivienne Westwood.
This encyclopaedic survey, with its colorful and detailed illustrations, will become the unrivaled reference work in its field, indispensable to any shoe enthusiast, designer, or collector. Over 2000 illustrations, 800 in color.

Give Thanks for this is as Good as it Gets.......2006-12-26
You really must give thanks to the author for having given us this book. As usual it is peerless in the degree of historical accuracy and detail that his illustrations unfailingly provide. Morever, it is one of the rare books that give us as much insight into men's footwear as it does into the history of women's footwear.
Of course it would have been nice to have detailed photographs of original ancient footwear or even those from a century or two ago. Sadly, many specimens have not survived at all or at often at best are in poor condition and are kept hidden from regular open exhibition at textile museums that do own them due to their fragility. In most cases the original appearances of the footwear have to be reconstructed using paintings and published period sources along with a dash of imagination. The results are illustrations that bring to life what the historic examples would have looked like to a far greater degree than pictures of old footwear delapidated beyond recognition.
Granted these inevitable limitations, the splendid size and quality of the illustrations makes this a tour de force vastly superior to anything else likely to go into print for many years, if not decades, to come
Excellent within its parameters.......2006-08-10
I waffled between 4 and 5 stars for this. I think Peacock could do with some slightly more accurate titles. This is a history of western European shoes, with ancient Mesopotamia, Greece and Egypt thrown in for length. Beyond those, there is nothing on even eastern Europe, let alone Asia, Africa, etc. I also suspect from his books that Peacock does not really approve of our casual age. I saw only a single tennis shoe; none of the clogs and earth shoes that were so typical of the late 1960s and early 1970s; and none of the elaborate athletic shoes. Peacock does say that he is focusing chiefly on fashionable shoes, but I think that the high-end athletic shoes qualify as designer models, even if the other don't.
Given that, it's wonderful for what it does cover. Men's shoes are included. My favorite part is the ancient shoes; I have never seen such a variety illustrated.
The pages have small but clear drawings of usually 7 or 8 shoes per page, with minimal labelling. More detailed labelling follows. The time length covered by each section varies; as one might expect, shorter period are covered for more recent shoes. This is not as lush as the photographic collections of shoes, but I think it's more helpful as a history, especially for older styles which may have been reconstructed from fragments.
The introduction gives a brief history of the development of the shoes. There is a timeline where the shoes are reproduced as outline drawings to get a idea of the flow of change. This is followed by a concise history of designers and companies, and a bibliography.
So, it doesn't have a scholarly historical text, I don't recommend it for people as a book for gaping over startling shoes, but it is a very good visual history.
A comprehensive history of shoes.......2005-09-04
Fans of the shoe, whether they be fashion-oriented or art-oriented, will welcome John Peacock's fabulous book Shoes: The Complete Sourcebook, which holds over 2,000 illustrations to accompany a comprehensive history of shoes. Another plus: both men's and women's shoes are covered, from the earliest known shoes to modern times; and plenty of color accompany a chronological history which covers footwear trends, manufacture, and influences on changing styles. If only one fashion or art book on shoes were to be chosen for a discriminating library, it should be Peacock's: he leaves nothing out.
Complete hype.......2005-05-21
I happened upon this book in the bookstore, and also recently saw it mentioned in Harper's Bazar. All they say is that it is a "comprehensive history of footware." What they fail to mention is that all the pictures are illustrations. There is not one single color photograph of an original shoe. If you check the product description above that Amazon provides, it does tell you that it has illustrations, but many people don't know to look there.
While the drawings are nicely done, they didn't give me the same thrill that seeing an actual photo of an original shoe would have. The pictures on the cover are exactly the same type of drawing and the same type of composition that you will see of other shoes in the book. I can understand having drawings of shoes from hundreds of years ago, but not having any photos of modern shoes seems a cop out.
The book is informative, but I think it is in no way "complete." It gives an overview of shoes from different eras, but does not scratch much beyond the surface. So, you get a little of everything and some representative pictures of the average footware, but not a good sense of what might be unique about a particular time period beyond what you can see for yourself in the illustrations.
I've read other books on fashion history that do a better job than this book in covering a wide range of time periods (such as Decades of Beauty). However, these books did not contain only shoes. I have yet to find a book about shoes that has both good photographs and informative text.
So, due to lack of competition, some people may want to check this book out because there isn't anything else out there. But, I would not reccomend buying it sight unseen. I think that this book would be too elementary for a fashion historan or someone into the history of shoes, but too boring for the average person to want to buy. I definitely would not recommend it for someone with a shoe fetish. It was worth the time I spent looking through it at the bookstore because of some of the text, but mostly because of the lack of photos I did not buy it.

This volume takes off exactly where the last left off, and doesn't disapoint the reader. The story continues to progress in its usual hilarious fashion.

Weaned on a steady diet of Star Wars, hip-hop, racism, and Warner Bros. cartoons, author Keith Knight drew comics instead of paying attention in grade school. Years later, Knight developed his trademark poorly rendered, barely thought-out cartooning style that has amused dozens for over a decade.

I'd be homeless if it weren't for Keith Knight .......2006-04-08
"Look, darling, another check for $15!"
--Keith Knight.
==============
I'm not a rich guy. I'm pretty poor. But I'm rich in other ways, and I love my life.
One of the ways I'm rich is that I get very cool mail from very cool people. Today I got a signed copy of "The Passion of the Keef" in the mail from Keith.
Made my friggin' week.
My gal and I sat and read the book together and laughed our toushies off.
By the way, I make a living writing because of Keith.
I originally gave away all I'd learned about filmmaking at the time from making my film "DIY or DIE: How To Survive as an Independent Artist" on a website called "99-cent film school".
I had a Word document and let people download it free.
I had a paypal icon and encouraged them to tip me 99 cents.
2000 people downloaded it, and not one person tipped me 99 cents.
Then I remembered what Keith said when I interviewed him in DIY or DIE, that "People don't appreciate stuff they get for free." (He was talking about how he used to give his self-published comics away free, before he had a publisher.)
That's when I learned to write a proposal, and wrote one for $30 Film School.
I've since put out six books.
$30 Film School sold 20,000 copies and the second edition just came out.
I'm not rich, I make about what you'd make managing a record store. But I work at home doing stuff I love.
And it's all Keith Knight's fault.
By the way, the first time I ever met Keith, he was at a Fugazi concert in a park in San Francisco, wearing a sandwich board promoting his book "Dances With Sheep." He had a blow up love doll sheep under his arm. I said to myself, "I've GOT to go over and meet this guy."
funny and original.......2005-10-12
Keith Knight brings and unusual, original and funny brand of humor to his work and this is a well-needed thing in this time of cookie-cutter humor. His work is often political but he doesn't beat you over the head with his message. Keith's style is to show interesting events that have occurred that aren't necessarily all that unusual until you stop to think about what actually happened; kind of like a black Seinfeld in a way. A lot of his material is about his family, living in San Francisco and about his work as a cartoonist and his band. "The Passion of the Keef' follows events in his life as he progresses into later adulthood; being married, going bald, being recognized on the streets and the beginning of fame.
I enjoyed "The Passion of the Keef" and most of Keith's work because of his unique interpretation of life. For instance, when I usually hear about life in San Francisco most of it is about the food, gay parades or corny TV cop shows. The city is so much more than that. Keith's book actually gave me a small feel of what daily life might be like there, just a peek.
I am sure a few people have compared this to the "boondocks". I think they're apples and oranges but I can see a connection. They both make political statements but "The Passion of the Keef" is much broader in scope and not nearly as edgy, edgy meaning being potentially offensive to some or many but not better or worse. Keith's characters do less editorializing than the Boondocks they look at a situation and they're like "hey, this is messed up". While Boondocks characters say the same thing and start naming names and specific events. Each has its own place and both are great interpretations of often the same events.
The book itself is small; you could finish it in a day. The artwork is minimal but does a good job to convey the emotions of the characters and the situation they're in. It's more than worth the price; I just wish that he would come out with work more frequently.
Wish the ol' Stars and Stripes paper would carry this.......2005-04-16
"Keef" is my kind of guy. He's almost completely tactless and passionate and makes me laugh at things that would normally anger me. His ability to not difuse but certainly make light of the sad state of affairs for Americans like myself is always welcome. He's raw but valid and in these days of rampant caution he's a breath of good stinky air. That is a very good thing! Rather than dance around the issues in some clever way he, instead, fully engages the same concerns and ironies that spatter my life with inane stupidty. I've come to rely on his wit and candor and since I live abroad his collections are the only means I have to appreciate his cunning and caustic sense of humor. To top it off his observations are infectious. It's hard for me to put his book down. If you like your humor in the same vein as the "Simpsons" and "Boondocks" then this is the book for you. Seriously, Kieth Knight makes me look forward to his future collections. There is always a good dose of belly laughs and this collection may be his best one yet!
Passion For The Geek.......2005-03-29
I love "The K Chronicles". I look forward to it each week in Salon.com and /or other places (if you can find it). I have Keith Knight's other three collections (but not "Th(ink)") and love pretty much every strip he's done. Who knew there was a such a cool yet geeky guy out there who's not only a fan of the fringe ("Bottom", anyone?) but is a guy who shatters every imaginable myth out there when it comes to African-Americans (aka Blacks for those not in the know). Not only that but he has a hot German wife (or so he says which I wouldn't doubt). In any case, I highly suggest you seek out one of Keith Knight's books because they're not only freakin' hilarious to the nth degree but highly intelligent to boot. Any collection is worth a look be it the first one "Dances with Sheep" or his latest one here. If nothing else, it's better than "Ziggy". ;)

A wonderful companion to the DVD........2002-12-29
This extraordinary book on the last hundred years American cinema is an exceptionally well written, edited and researched document of the film, without any of the usual scholarly classroom didactics or conceited Hollywood self-congratulatory posturing. Scorsese's humble voice is evident throughout, and it is one of self-confidence, clarity and enthusiasm. The book is a wonderful companion to the DVD.
It's kind of corny.......2000-02-17
I was reading it to find out some tips, yet it was a corny book. I didn't like it.
Highly recommed book to supplement the programme.......1998-08-15
This book is more of a transcript of the 4½ hour long master piece of the documentary, but it's curtainly worth the money. Here you have all the still pictures from the hundreds of film Scorsese comments in his programme. A book for every filmbuffs bookself.
TYPICAL PICTURE BOOK.......1998-07-11
YOU WOULD THINK THE AUTHORS WOULD WRITE SOMETHING. THEY PROBABLY TALKED AND TRANSCRIBED WHAT SCORSESE SAID. YOU FIGURE WITH A GUY LIKE SCORSESE THAT HE WOULD HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT HIS FAVORITE MOVIES AND THE MOVIES THAT INFLUENCED HIM SO MUCH. HE DOES NOT DO THAT IN THIS BOOK. IT IS FULL OF NICE PICTURES, BUT NOT MUCH AS INFORMATION GOES. YOU EXPECT TO LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT THE MOVIES HE LOVES BUT HE DOESN'T GIVE ANY USEFUL INFORMATION. HE PROBABLY THOUGHT THAT IF IT HAD A LOT OF GLOSSY STILLS OF HIS FAVORITE MOVIES THE BOOK WOULD SELL. THE THING IS THIRTY DOLLARS AND NOT REALLY WORTH IT. HE SEEMS TO BE SAYING THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER WHEREVER YOU READ ABOUT HIM OR SEE HIM ON TV. HE IS AN EXPERT BUT WHY DOESN'T HE SHOW THAT IN THIS BOOK. IT IS VERY VERY SKIMPY AND UNLIKE HIS MOVIES LACK CONTENT. IF HE SPENT MORE TIME WITH THE BOOK INSTEAD OF HAVING SOMEONE ELSE WRITE IT AND THEN CHECK AND OKAY THE BOOK, THE BOOK MAY HAVE TURNED OUT TO BE SOMETHING OF A GREAT BOOK ON FILM AND FILM HISTORY AS WELL AS THE FIRST GREAT FILM CRITICISM BOOK BY A WORKING FILM DIRECTOR SINCE THE BOOKS OF TRUFFAUT. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. WHAT HE SHOULD DO NOW IS REWRITE THE BOOK FOR THE PAPERBACK RELEASE. THIS BOOK IS NOT WORTH THE WEIGHT.

Book Description
The French is a sound and resilient defence, which also provides abundant opportunities for counterplay. As a result it has been favoured by such great fighting players as Lasker, Botvinnik and Korchnoi. Current adherents include Short, Shirov, Morozevich and Khalifman. By playing 3 Nc3, White confronts the French head-on. The upshot is often a ferocious battle as Black tries to destroy or damage White's central pawn phalanx. Some of the variations, such as the notorious Winawer Poisoned Pawn, are among the sharpest in opening theory. However, both sides have quieter, more positional, options at their disposal, so there is truly something for everyone in the Main Line French. This book, the first of two volumes by Pedersen on the French, covers all lines after 3 Nc3, including the Winawer (Nimzowitsch), Classical (including the Steinitz), MacCutcheon and Guimard Variations. There is also a full discussion of 3...dxe4, a move that has found favour among those seeking to avoid theory.

Good French book.......2007-05-10
Did not have time to go completely though. Gave to friend...
One of the best books I have ever seen.......2003-01-24
When I purchased this book I thought that it was going to be a standard book. How wrong was I! This book is fantastic! The author did a great job commenting the positions and it is clear that he, himself, assessed the variations and offered a very balanced opinion.
I was very, very surprised with his thoroughness and the fact that the book is not merely a repository for a database. Pedersen crafted this book with care and professionalism!
I, myself have gathered some ideas from it and what is interesting is that these ideas are applicable over the board...
I am happy I bought this book and hope to see a next one on the French by him.
Excellent.......2002-07-26
This book talks only of the 3-Nc3 lines and there is much stuff. Steffen Pedersen does a great job in explaining the main variations without forgetting to give less played lines. It is another good example of the quality The Gambit Publications are used to give to readers. The materiel is not too complicated for amateur players and is deep enough.
Having contacted the House of Edition myself I can tell that the same author is to write a second book on all the other lines of the French in 2003. I'm eager to see it!
Book Description
The guru of high technology and a man whose "slightest utterance can move stocks" (The Wall Street Journal) presents a clear, cogent vision of the future of telecommunications; what it will mean in our everyday lives; and how savvy investors can get on the bandwagon today.
With his books (including the groundbreaking Microcosm), top-selling newsletter, testimony before Congress, and annual Telecosm conferences, George Gilder has become the premier prophet of bandwidth and connectivity. In this revised version of Telecosm, Gilder takes technology buffs and investors on a mind-bending tour inside the worldwide webs of glass and light, explaining how fiber optics and wireless breakthroughs are pushing new technologies and new companies to the fore.
Customer Reviews:
What a piece...of dun!.......2006-02-24
While this book made many people very poor, it serves a great purpose for the investor. George Gilder lets you see how booming markets can mess with people's heads. George, just like many other writers, obviously thought the bull market would never end. While he is correct in many of the visions of the future, he was one to two full market cycle's too early on his first print date. However, it will be fun to watch the next cycle or two! (I give this book two stars for its poor timing)
An Outdated Piece of .com Junk.......2003-08-19
While this book is extremely well written, it is outdated now in 2003. This book is filled with the hype, euphoria, and speculative promises of the .com era. Yes, the writing sizzzles and many of the stories are interesting, but the writing seems to lack a firm foundation of fundemental research and the stories when read carefully seem to be re-written from third party accounts rather than the result of original research, interviews, and fact finding. Somehow, Wired Magazine articles are better than this.
Let there be lightý.......2002-05-31
IT Strategy studies and deployment of solutions was my area of interest during the last decade. In most cases, especially while dealing with businesses that are geographically dispersed, connectivity has played a key role in deciding on the solution set. Trade off between centralized vs. de-centralized structures, TCO, maintainability and application response times on WAN have been crucial factors in decision making. Going by Eliyahu Goldratt's "Theory of Constraints", it is not difficult to guess that bandwidth availability and costs have dictated the boundaries of IT architectures. The "Last Mile Problem" used to sound like the last post. Not anymore, even in developing countries if Telecosm becomes a global reality. With abundance of cheap bandwidth we are entering a new era in IT Solutions. If Microcosm could pack computing power far exceeding the power of legacy mainframes on the PC sitting on our desks, Telecosm is about distributing this power from the center of the network to the peripheral devices. The ethernet card connecting the "teleputer" dissolves into the World Wide Web; World Wide Wait is eliminated by World Wide Waves. "The Network is the Computer".
Microcosm has multiplied Computing power and Storage and divided costs by million folds. Connectivity between these massive and powerful systems has not kept pace during this phase. Better late than never, enter Telecosm. Fiber and Satellites using light and electromagnetic waves transfer information across the globe at Petabit rates. This paradigm shift in communications is bound to have profound effects on business and society. We will soon be wasting bandwidth as we are now wasting transistors on our processors. Gilder narrates this phenomenon very well.
After reading the first 3 chapters of the book, I decided to revisit my college books on Quantum Physics- Planck's Constant, Wave Theory, Speed of light, Schroedinger's equation come in handy to really appreciate the power of Telecosm. For ready reference the book provides an excellent glossary of all technical terms that help have a quick recap. I would appreciate if the next edition contains detailed notes on concepts like WDM, CDMA and Packet Switching in the appendix.
The future looks so bright that I foresee a global scarcity of sunglasses! But we still have a problem on hand- the limitation imposed by the speed of light. But if God created light, we need to urge with him to create something that is faster. That will need different lines of communication not discussed in this book. Till then, let there be light!
