Only for Newbies.......2006-12-16
This book may entice new knitters but it is lack luster for anyone that has gone beyond knit and purl.
Fine as a first ever knit pattern book.......2006-09-08
I was very disappointed in the book. I am a relatively new knitter but almost every pattern was in another book - original designs are not her specialty. But more disappointing than the patterns was the complete lack of spiritual insights. Nor were there suggestions for soulful knitting. The title is misleading to say the least. I sent the book back immediately for a full refund thanks to Amazon's return policy.
Good for beginners like me!.......2005-07-01
I'm so glad I found this book! Although I'm a beginner, I've knitted all the scarves I can use, so it was great to find some more interesting designs I can make. There are also some intriguing designs that I have my eye on for the time I'm ready to take the next step up in complexity. Lots of patterns here for the beginner AND the experienced knitter.
New Visions for a New Age.......2005-06-07
This little book is a godsend. Readers will note that upon first glance, it is nicely printed but modest in size, and then they will be delightfully surprised to discover a wealth of completely original designs by someone who has apparently been quietly exploring her craft with patient zeal. Shawls that go from the wonderfully feminine to a high elegance, to a stately simplicity achieved through the use of just the right touch of the decorative.
Then there is the seamless Mobius shawl, not the machine-produced mobiuses that have seams: this shawl has to be seen and worn to be believed. Not to mention the scarf/hat ensembles, mitten/glove combinations, and plenty more. The truth is, if you can get one fine design from this book (and I imagine anybody could easily find more than one), the book will be well worth its price, which is almost typical for the knitting world anyway. Original designs are original designs, and this book is full of them. If you love to knit, then this book is for you.
Book Description
This book traces the evolution of the style of men's dress through a sequence of diagrams accurately scaled down from patterns of actual garments, many of them rare museum specimens. The plates have been selected with the same purpose. Some are photographs of suits for which diagrams have also been given; others, reproduced from paintings and old prints, show the costume complete with its accessories. Quotations from contemporary sources--from diaries, travelers' accounts and tailors' bills--supplements Miss Waugh's text with comments on fashion and lively eyewitness descriptions.
Judicious quotations and diagrams from the few surviving early books on tailoring add spice as well as accuracy to the discussion.

The Cut of Men's Clothes.......2007-01-15
This has been a standard work since first publication and it is excellent to see it republished in company with its sister work The Cut of Women's Clothes
Nice Resource for Historical Costuming.......2001-02-24
I never thought I would ever sew. However, my brother and I got the grandiose idea that we would make ourselves leather buff coats to wear during re-enactments with our 17th century living history group. We needed a pattern and started with research at the local college library and found this book. Although neither one of us had ever sewn before, we were able to take the coat pattern from this book, adapt it to fit our bodies and sew a coat for ourselves out of buff leather. There is a whole chapter on 17th century clothing which has patterns for breeches, doublets, cassacks and sword hangars. It also has photos of actual museum pieces. If I could use the patterns in the book, than anyone with any skill will have no problems. This book is an good resource for those wishing to sew their own period clothing.
A Comprehensive Source for Men's Clothing.......1999-12-21
I was a little surprised when I recieved this book that it is not quite as beefy as Norah Waugh's _Cut of Women's_ clothes. I was however very pleased with it's cotent. About half of the patterns seem to be taken from pre-1780s and the other half from 1840 on. This was a little disappointing as I was looking for some good Regency Jackets for my husband. There are how ever several frock coats that I can easily ajust the cut to to get the look I want. This is a great book as far as I can tell but I am still undecided as to whether it is worth the steep price tag.

Customer Reviews:
The greatest independent comic series ever........2007-09-22
Terry Moore's series Strangers in Paradise is a fantasic study of modern life and love. It's about breaking down social stereotypes and learning to love a person for who they are not what they are. It's about true friendship and how hard and how beautiful that is. It's about growing up and knowing yourself and being yourself and rising above your history. It's also an action/adventure thriller with twists and turns and plenty of surprises. There are stories within stories. It's a multilayered, many splendored thing. It's such a good read. Read it.
A wonderful addition to a fast-paced and enthralling series.......2006-04-08
Katchoo and Francine are roomates, and Katchoo has a crush on Francine. Francine loves Katchoo but prefers men. David is in love with Katchoo, but she hates men. This is the love triangle that anchors this multivolume series. In volume one we learned that prior to living with Francine, Katchoo worked for David's gang boss sister, Darcy Parker, as a call girl and also was her lover. She went into hiding when she ran away from Darcy with a whole lot of Darcy's money.
Now in Volume 2 Darcy has found Katchoo and forces her back into her mob with threats on Francine's life. Darcy needs Katchoo in her biggest blackmail project to date. The main theme of the volume is how Katchoo and David, with help from Francine, escape Darcy's nefarious plans.
Terry Moore takes us through three different time periods in this book. The main story takes place in the time when Darcy's plans are foiled by Katchoo. Then Mr. Moore takes us back to when Francine and Katchoo first met in high school. It is in there that we learn about the troubles that have shaped their current inability to develop loving relationships. Then we find that the high school flashback is just a reminiscence of Francine who hasn't seen Katchoo for ten years and is a wife and mother in a loveless marriage. If she ever needed Katchoo's love, it is at this moment.
The book ends with a short fantasy piece where Francine and Katchoo role play Zena, Warrior Princess. All in all, a delightful book with lots of twists and turns to keep you wanting more.
A must read for comic fans.......2005-11-19
I was late jumping on the SiP bandwagon, but in the end I'm sure glad I did. If it's one thing Terry Moore is good at, is writing stories that pull on the strings of your heart. It's certainly the most unconventional comic to say the least as all of the characters seem like real people, with no superpowers to be found. Yet all of them do have a real villain- reality. The pain of a love relationship gone wrong, gang crime, brutal murders and dissapointment of dying dreams. It is also a book filled with genuine warmth of friendship, romance and happiness that simply doesn't exist in other books.
All in all, I recomment this a must read for any comic fan. I do agree with what the reader below me said, that the faces of Casey and Katchoo are almost identical. But it's still a damn good book and I'm sorry to see that it will soon becoming to and end.
The way it should be.......2004-11-20
I have to say that I have tried to read the individual comics that comprise this book. I just couldn't really get into the characters and had no desire to read the series. These pocket books are the way these characters need to be represented. With this format, the reader has a greater chance of seeing the depth and all the turns in the lifes of Francine, Katchoo and David. We see how minor characters interact and come back again. I have really come to enjoy these books.
If I had one complaint it would be in the art work. Now stop booing me. The art work is really excellent but the faces of most of woman are drawn the same. It takes me a few minutes to figure out who I am looking at and her role. Fancine is no problem. Just the characters that I believe to be blonde all look the same.
Other than that, the real strength of the series is in the writing which is top notch. I have come to care for these characters and look forward to book 3.
Just wonderful!.......2004-11-13
This was my first foray into the 'Strangers in Paradise' series, and what an incredible series it is. Infact, it is one of the best comic works I have come across, and I recommend it highly. I am completely excited about reading the rest of Moore's collection and was sorry when this had finished.
This pocket book is wonderful value and provides hours of entertainment. I am pleased to see that the series has been compiled, it is just too difficult to find the chronology of little books, and it was the release of these pocket books that inspired me to investigate 'Strangers in Paradise.'
The female characters are fleshed out, strong, very real, utterly likable and unlike the female caricatures so common in the comic genre. I particularly loved the high school portion of the work, which charters the beginnings of their intense friendship. As well the Xena story, which is also wonderful and quite funny.
Moore's work has a subtle gentle humour and he is quite amazing at nagivating the female psyche. While I wished I could have read the Pocket Book 1 first, it is not impossible to start a 'Strangers in Paradise' journey with this work.
But I do suggest you begin it. It is such a wonderful comic.
Book Description
Close your eyes and picture -- just for a moment -- hell. Fire? Demons? Eternal torment?
Well, yes -- that's the place, in one very hot nutshell. But that's not all there is to the forbidding world beneath us. For a few millennia now, we mortals have imagined and reimagined hell in countless ways: as a realm of damnation, as an inspiration for highest art, as a setting for the lowest of lowbrow comedy. One might conclude that for all our good intentions to enter para- dise, we can't seem to get enough vivid details of its counterpart, hell.
Provocative, colorful, and damned entertaining, Go to Hell takes readers on a tour of the underworld that is both darkly comical and seriously informative. From the frozen hell of the Vikings to the sun-drenched Cayman Islands' town of Hell (where tourists line up to have their postcards aptly postmarked), from Dante's circles of hell to Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Hellmouth, Go to Hell embraces our evolving relationship with the sinner's final destination, revealing how we truly think of ourselves in this world.
What's down below?
Meet HEL, the hideous, half-rotting goddess of the Viking underworld.
Beware the Egyptians' AM-MUT, an unsightly mix of lion, crocodile, and hippo parts, and insatiably hungry for wicked souls.
Visit JIGOKU, a Buddhist realm of eight fiery hells and eight icy hells: an all-you-can-suffer hot-and-cold buffet.
Step into the INFERNO for a tour of Dante's nine circles of the damned...

Easy Reading, Engaging, and Entertaining........2007-05-27
There you are, sitting on the bus, the train, or on a park bench, quietly reading. When all of a sudden, someone, obviously a non-reader, interrupts your solitude and asks "What are you reading?" To which you reply, Go To Hell. And you'd be right!
Go to Hell, A Heated History of the Underworld, is an engaging book written by Chuck Crisafulli and Kyra Thompson. Hell, as you will read in the book, is quite an interesting subject, with a complex history covering many religions and mythologies throughout time.
You'll read about the view of Hell that comes from the Book of Revelations that will be familiar to Christians, with its "gnashing of teeth" and lake of fire; the Japanese Buddhist Hell that is called Jigoku and consists of eight fiery hells and eight icy hells, all ruled by the Great Judge of Hell, Emma-O who weighs your soul to measure your wickedness; and the Viking Hell, an inhospitable and cold place called Niflheim, and is run by the goddess of death and the underworld, Hel.
The book delves into all aspects of Hell: what it is, where it is, what goes on there, who's in charge, and what artists, writers and philosophers have had to say about Hell over the centuries. Each chapter is separated into many sections with creative headings such as I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up, Book-of-the-Dead Club, and It's a Small World After Hell.
An additional fun feature in the book is called My Hell and features quotes by various celebrities who describe what Hell means to them. These celebrities include Bob Newhart, William Shatner, and Matt Stone (of South Park fame). My personal favorite My Hell segment is described by John Kricfalusi (the creator of Ren and Stimpy) because I believe I have already been there (think movie theater).
Lastly, the book has a comprehensive bibliography, should you wish to continue your study of Hell.
The authors take what has to be one of the most serious subjects around and make it easy-reading, entertaining, and yes, educational. This makes it a book for all ages, from teens to seniors -- as long as they keep an open mind and don't take it all too seriously!
So pick up this book, and enjoy telling anyone who wants to know what you are reading to Go To Hell!
What Lies Below.......2006-04-09
In the world of good vs. evil, we've all hoped for heaven, but wondered what the alternative is like. In this amusing but informative collection of trivia, history and stories, the authors have gathered together, as the subtitle notes, a history of the underworld. Starting off with a history of the concept of the underworld, and how pieces were added and visions molded into our present day idea of Hell, with the lakes of fire and eternal torment. They then tackle the various ideas of where Hell is, and what really goes on there. The development of the concept of Satan is explored in one chapter and then the host of demons is visited. All this is told through short parts inside each chapter looking at a specific aspect, story or participant in the ideas of hell, keeping the information lively. Interspersed with these stories are small bits of trivia, including places with Hell in the name, humorous stories, and random musings, such as how the castaways of Gilligan's Island could represent the seven deadly sins. Interspersed with the text are short paragraphs from an eclectic group of "famous" people musing as to what they would consider Hell. This part, I believe, loses something unless you know the person opining on Hell. And if theses visions are the best that came back from going to celebrities, then maybe the whole idea should have been rethought.
Overall the book is witty, informative and fun. Not deep theology, just an interesting gathering of data on a subject we would rather not think too much about.
A Robert Benchley redux?.......2005-10-31
Way back in the 20th Century, my favorite humorist by far was the redoubtable Bob Benchley. Along with much of America, I mourned the passing of his dry wit and hilarious offbeat observances. Now, with the publication of Chuck Crisafulli and Kyra Thompson's "Go To Hell", I feel a Benchley reincarnation may be afoot. They have gone where Benchley might have dared to tread, embracing with humorous strokes a topic about which everyone seems to have a view. In almost every sentence, I seemed to hear the old master's engaging, warm voice.

An amazing, amazing book.......2005-01-19
I've read many a' Rough Guide to a variety of musical forms, and Kurt Wolff's book on country absolutely takes the cake. From the music's hillbilly beginnings to the alt-country offshoots of the '90s, this well-researched book is written with wit and a tender affection for the genre's highlights AND lowlights. I can't imagine a better gift for someone interested in country music. My only gripe: Now that the book is four years old, some of the artist information could use an update. Second edition, Kurt? Please?
From hillbilly to alternative, it's all here . . ........2004-12-04
This is a truly fine one-volume encyclopedia of country music. Organized both historically and generically, the book is divided into 14 chapters, each discussing a type of music (hillbilly, cowboy, western swing, honky tonk, etc.) and tracing it from the time of its introduction to the present, with an overview followed by entries spotlighting the artists in alphabetical order. The chapter on rockabilly, for instance, includes both Elvis and the Stray Cats. Each entry concludes with brief reviews of recommended recordings. In addition, there are over 250 photographs of performers and album covers and numerous sidebars with short essays on a variety of topics.
The book comes in at almost 600 pages, covering the length and breadth of the subject and making a pretty fair attempt at measuring the depth, as well. To give an idea of the book's scope, the "classic" stars Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline don't appear until the middle. For anyone who may think country music starts and ends with Nashville, it will come as a surprise that so much of this music originated elsewhere.
You can read this book any old way you like, flipping through the pages, letting the pictures catch your eye as you discover favorite performers. If you grew up with country, there's many a trip down memory lane. If you're just discovering country, it is an excellent reference book just filled with information charting the careers of artists and their place in country music history. Well written, handsomely designed, easy to read and enjoy, it's a terrific book that will enhance any fan's love of this great musical tradition.
Broad and well-researched book with plenty of info........2002-12-19
I bought this book at the advice of a friend and was not disappointed. Wolff is a thoughtful and articulate writer, and this book has plenty of recording artists that I was not aware of. It is arranged in chronological historical chapters, which show the progression of country music to the present. Interesting write-ups on all the major artists, and plenty of information on musicians you probably won't have heard of.
You need this if you listen to country........2002-09-19
Love this book, just stumbled on it a few weeks ago, and can't put it down. I've been listening to country and loving it since I was a little girl, and this thing keeps turning me on to more music I want to go out and buy. Cool bio's on the artists and a great section on the seventies outlaw artists.
Fascinating and informative........2001-11-15
An essential addition to your music library - whether you're a country novice or expert. The author has meticulously researched and written about country music in a well-organized chronological format that allows the reader to fully grasp the roots and progression of this music genre. The book includes biographies of country artists (those who are well-known, as well as some forgotten gems), discographies, reviews, and essays which fit the music into a broader social and historical perspective.
Great purchase - one of the best music reference books I own. Also check out the companion guide - 100 Essential CD's. Some interesting picks.

Lockdown saved its failing economy, but is it worth the price of having a prison full of the world's most dangerous super-criminals in its backyard? Lockdown comes with numerous adventure ideas and ways to use the prison in your own Mutants & Masterminds campaign. You can make it a background element or build an entire game where the characters are convicts! Plus, Lockdown comes with a secret: a conspiracy that could bring the prison crashing down and threaten law and order across the world!
Customer Reviews:
Go to Jail!.......2006-12-03
It's an often overlooked part of the superhero genre: the super prison. But a necessity of the convention. After all once you've caught the big bad villain and he's been convict of his heinous crimes, where are you going to put him?
Lockdown is a fairly generic prison specialized in contain convicted felons with super powers or access to fabulous gadgets or both. Like anyting else, it can be altered to fit what ever terrain you want to put it. PC supers can either go undercover as prisoners or help out the guards. Extra villains are provided in case you want a prison break to introduce new bad guys to your campaign.
Many is the time that whenever the villain of the week is caught, that's all the campaign deals him or her. The trial and incarceration is glossed over or ignored altogether. So this is primarily a GM book, but a necessary book. Not getting this book is leaving a hole in your campaign world you very well regret later.
Book Description
Finally! A book about economics that won't put you to sleep. In fact, you won't be able to put this one down.
Naked Economics makes up for all of those Econ 101 lectures you slept through (or avoided) in college, demystifying key concepts, laying bare the truths behind the numbers, and answering those questions you have always been too embarrassed to ask. For all the discussion of Alan Greenspan in the media, does anyone know what the Fed actually does? And what about those blackouts in California? Were they a conspiracy on the part of the power companies? Economics is life. There's no way to understand the important issues without it. Now, with Charles Wheelan's breezy tour, there's no reason to fear this highly relevant subject. With the commonsensical examples and brilliantly acerbic commentary we've come to associate with The Economist, Wheelan brings economics to life. Amazingly, he does so with nary a chart, graph, or mathematical equation in sightcertainly a feat to be witnessed firsthand.
Economics is a crucial subject. There's no way to understand the important issues without it. Now, with Charles Wheelan's breezy tour, there's also no reason to fear it.

Very entertaining.......2007-10-05
I was advised to read this book for one of my classes at grad school, and really enjoyed it. I found it really enlightening and helped understand economic concepts much better. It was also an entertaining read, which is obviously surprising as it's all about economics!

This book explains economic subjects very clearly and concisely without throwing too much new vocabulary at you. It is a very easy and fun read. If you want to know why the economy works the way it does and don't want to sit through multiple text books, read this one.
Simplicity on the other end of complexity........2007-09-07
I've heard that simplicity on the front end of complexity is foolishness, while simplicity on the back end of complexity is genius. What I mean by that is that in this book Wheelan is genius in how he can concisely describe complex matters in simple terms without over-simplifying to the point of simplicity. It was obvious to me, as a reader, that he clearly understands economics in all its complexity; that is, he could probably make a sequel to this book called: Economics Dressed Head to Foot: Ornamenting the Dismal Science With Toe-Rings. The fact that Wheelan understands economics throughly and has an obviously polished journalistic, pleasant-to-read writing style lead me to give this book 5 stars, and recommend it to my wife and mother, who typically would have little time and interest in the topic. Thanks Wheelan.
Lively read.......2007-09-05
I took econ pass/fail many years ago and didn't enjoy it. Had the prof used this as his textbook, I might have becom an econ major. Wheelan does a great job making the subject as interesting as others make it dull.
Good introduction to microeconomic analysis but some big errors.......2007-07-05
The author writes well. The lense through which he views the economy is primarily libertarian. His microeconomic analysis,as long as there are no major negative externalities and/or spillover effects ,or market failures ,involved in the production and consumption of the particular product, good,or market he is talking about,is interesting. Not so when it comes to macroeconomics.Wheelan simply does not know what it was that either Adam Smith or J M Keynes actually said in their major theoretical contributions .He is ignorant.
Let's start with Adam Smith's fundamental macroconclusion, stated on pp.734-735 of the Wealth of Nations-the Invisible Hand process,i.e.,comparative advantage, the division of labor, extension of the market(national and international trade),etc., creates major undepletable negative externalities(social, political, martial, intellectual, moral)that impact practically the entire work force.
What is Smith's summary of the problem ? Smith is crystal clear:"Division of labor destroys intellectual, social, and martial virtues unless government takes pains to prevent it".(Cannan paraphrase). What is Smith's solution ?.Smith gives his solution on pp.767-768 after 40 pages of the most lucid and pungent analysis ever made by an economist.I leave this as a voluntary assignment for Wheelan to read and integrate into a later edition of his book.
How about Keynes ? Does Wheelan get Keynes right? No! He gets it all wrong-again. Wheelan makes the following claim on p.157 of his book:"The government can use fiscal policy-spending,tax cuts,or both-to " fine tune"the economy[.This] was the central insight of John Maynard Keynes...".In fact,Keynes was a life long opponent of such a policy.Nowhere in the General Theory(1936) or in any of the 30 volumes of the Collected Writings of John Maynard Keynes(CWJMK) will any support be found for Wheelan's wild claim. In volume 27 of the CWJMK,pp.225-410 contain Keynes's arguments against such a policy (which were being advocated by later Nobel Memorial prize winner James Meade)are covered for the 3 years 1942-1943-1944 in England. What was Keynes's solution ? It is the same solution as given by Adam Smith-maintain low, fixed rates of interest permanently in the long run and cut off all bank loans to projectors, prodigals, and imprudent risk takers so that their leveraging behavior is prevented. This will prevent the formation of bubbles whose collapse causes major negative externality effects .
Wheelan needs to correct these errors, as well as a number of other mistakes,in a future edition.
